MLB DFS: Aces and Bases – 4/17 (FanDuel Main Slate)

We’ve got some live arms and potent bats in this edition of Aces and Bases focusing ONLY on FanDuel’s five-game MLB DFS Main Slate for 7:05PM ET.

There are no bad weather issues but a possible COVID outbreak on the Houston Astros means we have to stay vigilant on news and have pivots at the ready!

MLB DFS: The Aces

Top Ace: Yu Darvish ($9,900)

Kershaw is the highest-priced arm and the likely chalk, but I’d venture to say that Darvish has more contrarian upside in a home matchup against a team that’s not known for swing-and-misses, but doesn’t have a lot of experience facing Darvish. The Japanese marvel is notoriously tricky to solve and seemed at ease in his last two starts — and while Kershaw might be the preferred option in cash games, I’ll take the cheaper San Diego RHP in GPPs for some leverage on the field, since only a small percentage of DFS gamers will use pitchers against the “Boys in Blue.”

Best Value: Dane Dunning ($8,000)

I’m a little concerned about getting six innings from Dunning, and that seems to be where he’d max out at his current pitch count progression, but he’ striking out more than a batter per inning in three major league starts and the command for this 26-year-old RHP. He throws a nasty sinker that complements his four-seamer and mixes in a decent slider and occasional use of a change and curveball. The Orioles strike out at the second-highest clip in the majors this season and Dunning could offer the cheapest path to 8+ Ks and a quality start.

MLB DFS: The Bases

Top Stack: Houston Astros at Seattle Mariners (RHP Chris Flexen)

The Astros have the fourth-highest team xOBA in baseball (.342) and shouldn’t have much trouble against the eminently hittable Chris Flexen. I’m most interested in some combination of the 2-6 hitters here, which could include Aledmys Diaz ($2,600), Michael Brantley ($3,600), Yuri Gurriel ($2,800), Kyle Tucker ($3,500) and Carlos Correa ($3,000). The prices are discounted a bit on these guys without Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman — who all hit the injured listed for undisclosed reasons, prompting rumors of a possible COVID outbreak. Stay tuned since there could be some news of a postponement or more players hitting that list.

Value/Contrarian Stack: Minnesota Twins at Los Angeles Angels (Jose Quintana)

So far this season, Jose Quintana has had a very difficult time retiring the 27 RH batters he’s faced, and he’s clearly on the downside of his career when those splits tend to become a little more exaggerated. The Twins are loaded with relatively inexpensive powerful righty hitters like Nelson Cruz ($3,800), Josh Donaldson ($3,000), Mitch Garver ($2,400) and Miguel Sano ($2,800). I was on them last night and they didn’t deliver against Andrew Heaney — a solid pitcher in his own right — but I’m going right back to the well. Cruz alone sports an obscene .570 wOBA and .440 ISO vs. LHP over his last 63 games, and Donaldson, Garver and Kyle Garlick ($2,200) all mash against LHP.

EDIT: The Twins-Angels game has been postponed, so remove any players associated with that game ASAP.

Value Stack: Milwaukee Brewers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (Trevor Cahill)

It’s not one of those slates where you need to deploy a very inexpensive secondary value stack, but the Brewers strike me as a classic boom-or-bust GPP stack you might want to mix into a few large, low-cost tournaments for their upside and potent lefty bats, including Travis Shaw ($2,900), Omar Narvaez ($2,700) and Christian Yelich ($4,100), who’s missed four straight with a back injury but is still considered DTD. If he can’t go, Billy McKinney ($2,000) could get the start, as both he and Jackie Bradley ($2,400) have been used to spell Yelich. Also keep an eye on Daniel Vogelbach at just $2,100. If you’re looking to run a Pirtes hitter back against the group, I’d prefer 3B Phillip Evans, who’s been raking against LHP this season and hits out of the 4 slot.

We’ve got five hitters for you in the 9/6 MLB DFS main (1:05 p.m. EST) slate in large-field FD GPPs, where it pays to be fearless and swing for the fences.

9/6 MLB DFS – C-1B Jose Abreu (FD $3,800) CWS @ KC

I’ve made the mistake of fading Abreu in favor if cheaper options before, and it’s a rough lesson to learn. Everything about the Cuban slugger’s matchup today is favorable, from the opposing pitcher (“Oh How Far Have You Fallen, Matt Harvey?” could be a modern folk song performed in sandlots by hipster troubadours) to the 20 mph winds blowing out among the ramped-up heat and humidity. I’ll be targeting a few hitters from the ChiSox today, but Abreu is the first.

9/6 MLB DFS – 2B D.J. LeMahieu (FD $3,900) NYY at BAL

We’ll need to find some value plays later in our GPP lineups, but there will be plenty of time for that one we delve into the outfield, where there’s always bargain options worth a look. For now, let’s focus on high-upside plays like LeMahieu, who along with his general awesomeness against RHPs (.408 wOBA) so far this season) has a history of smashing poor Asher Wojciechowski, the poster boy for dumpster fires. Just be aware that since both the Yankees and White Sox have the highest implied totals of the day, three of my five targets here will be players from those squads – and I’ll be using players from those games in my GPP stacks.

9/6 MLB DFS – 3B Josh Donaldson (FD $2,800) MIN vs. DET

We’re still getting a massive discount on Donaldson from the FanDuel algorithm since he’s only a few games back from injury, and if we want anybody with a pulse on the bump on our teams, we’re going to have to get some sub $3K players in here. The veteran masher is hitting second in the potent Twins lineup and faces a rookie pitcher (RHP Casey Mize) who skipped AAA and is definitely going to have his hands full today. This might be where I stray a bit from my CHW and NYY stacks because I’m not as high on switch-hitting Yoan Moncada, whose numbers against RHP aren’t as great, and hot corner savant Giovanny Urshela is on the IL.

UPDATE: With no Donaldson in the lineup, the Twins look a little less potent and you can pivot to a similarly priced Austin Riley or Travis Shaw.

9/6 MLB DFS – SS Gleyber Torres (FD $2,800) NYY at BAL

Torres has struggled this season with injuries and ineptitude at the plate, but if there’s a venue that will get the good vibes going for him again, it’s Camden Yards – where he boasted a 1.667 OPS (not a typo) in 36 plate appearances in 2019 and 7 of his 12 hits were homers. We don’t always like to play guys who are scuffling, but he notched a double and a walk last night and this could be the spot he breaks out in a big way. I wouldn’t question your decision to play either White Sox SS Tim Anderson or Twins SS Jorge Polanco if you don’t trust Torres yet, but I’m fearlessly forging into the fray with Gleyber!

UPDATE: Ugh. Another spot where we have to pivot. Jorge Polanco makes the most sense and you can always adjust another spot to fit in Tim Anderson.

9/6 MLB DFS – OF Jesse Winker (FD $2,900) CIN @ PIT

While generational talent Luis Robert and RHP destroyer Eloy Jimenez will be anchors in many of my GPPs, I’ve got to highlight the insane value we’re getting from Winker, who’s realizing his massive potential and sporting a .432 wOBA vs. RHPs in 2020 (including a .329 ISO and eight homers in 85 AB). Winker comes in at an affordable price in the heart of the Reds order against a relatively woeful and eminently hittable Chad Kuhl, who’s taken his lumps from the Cincy offense.

NOTE: My pitching will be a mix of Masahiro Tanaka (always a nail-biting GPP play with upside) and the occasional high-priced option when I can find enough value in the $2,200-$2,800 range for UTIL and the third OF position.

7/26 MLB DFS: The Fearless Five (DK GPP)

I’ve got five hitters for you to consider for the early 7/26 MLB DFS 11-game slate in DK GPPs, where it pays to be fearless and swing for the fences!

7/26 MLB DFS – C Robinson Chirinos (DK $3,900) TEX vs. COL

The Rangers offense has been a bit slow out of the gate, but RHBsin that lineup have a favorable matchup vs. LHP Kyle Freeland. One fearless leftymasher who comes at a considerable discount is Chirinos – an ample power sourceat catcher and a guy who often flies under the radar in DFS. If you’re notpaying up for J.T. Realmuto (DK $4,800), Mitch Garver ($4,900) or ChristianVazquez (DK $4,300), Chirinos makes sense as part of a stack or as a one-off tosave a few bucks and get similar upside. *Note: Chirinos battled an ankleinjury near the close of camp and sat out Saturday but looks to be good to gofor today.

7/26 MLB DFS – 1B Joey Votto (DK $3,800) CIN vs. DET

Speaking of discounts, Votto is a relatively inexpensive veteran slugger off to an uncharacteristically hot start, with a couple HRs in his first two games. I’m intrigued by the Reds stack against eminently hittable Spencer Turnbull, who’s been known to issue the occasional free pass and give up the long ball. Spend-up options include Anthony Rizzo (DK $5,000) and one-off Josh Bell (DK $4,900), and the punt-worthy Michael Chavis (DK $2,900) is available at both 1B and 2B – but I’m putting about half my GPP eggs in the Votto basket on the early slate.

7/26 MLB DFS – SS Alex Bregman (DK $4,900) HOU vs. SEA

Thankfully, Bregman is available at both SS and 3B on DK, where there’s a few other guys I’d like to play at the hot corner. The Astros have the second-highest projected total after the Red Sox, and it’s a GPP priority to lock in Bregman and his eye-popping .417 career wOBA vs. LHP against Yusei Kikuchi, a southpaw with a home run problem. Xander Bogaerts (DK $4,600) got the day off Saturday but returns to the BoSox lineup this afternoon, so he’s a viable option as pivot from Bregman, in Boston stacks or alongside Bregman if you plug the latter in at 3B. Red-hot Didi Gregorius (DK $3,500) sticks out as a value option for the Phillies.

7/26 MLB DFS – 3B Mike Moustakas (DK $4,000) CIN vs. DET

I’d like to play both Reds 3B Eugenio Suarez (DK $4,500) and Moustakas on DK, but you have to take your pick since each player is limited to a singular position at the hot corner. While Suarez might see lower ownership, we can probably get our variance elsewhere, as the man who sounds like a delicious Mediterranean casserole comes in with the highest daily simulated projections in the Cincy lineup. He’s the anchor of a 1-2-4-5-6 Reds stack that won’t cost you a bundle, and his upside is similar to more expensive options like Josh Donaldson (DK $4,200) and Rafael Devers (DK $5,200).

7/26 MLB DFS – OF Christian Yelich (DK $5,600) MIL at CHC

I’m on board with using potent Reds leadoff hitter Jesse Winker (DK $3,500) and value option Shogo Akiyama (DK $2,000) – easy-to-fit stack components who could make or break the slate – but my favorite spend-up at OF on DK is Yelich, who annihilated RHPs to the tune of a .473 wOBA and 195 wRC+ in 2019. The Brewers star went 1-for-5 with a dinger in yesterday’s game and we could see the wind blowing out in Wrigley this afternoon. I’m also interested in seeing Joey Gallo (DK $4,300) solve the new roofed park in Texas, so I’ll be mixing in shares of him as well. Yelich is expensive, but my first few builds include him and all of the aforementioned players with Trevor Bauer and Carlos Carrasco at my pitching spots – two of the highest projected starters in the slate.

ANOTHER NOTE: It’s also my 45th birthday today, so taking down one of the big GPPs on DraftKings would be the ultimate present! Good luck… and be fearless!

10/7 MLB DFS Four-Game Postseason Slate and Showdown Picks

It’s a busy Monday in the MLB postseason, so let’s jump right into the 10/7 DFS picks for the four-game slate and the featured Showdown contests on DraftKings.

The games: Houston Astros at Tampa Bay Rays (1:05 p.m. EST), Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals (3:07 p.m.), Los Angeles Dodgers at Washington Nationals (6:40 p.m.) and New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins (8:40 p.m. EST)

SP Strategy and Picks

There should be enough value in the bats to allow us to use my two favorite pitchers in this slate.

SP1: Luis Severino (DK $8,600, FD $8,400)

It’s been about a year since Severino took the mound in theplayoffs, the last time a disastrous outing against the Red Sox in which he gaveup six runs in three-plus innings in the ALDS, but this is his redemption tour.He’s been electric (12.75 K/9, 2.13 FIP) since returning from injury and shouldbe fresh, last pitching in a three-inning,72-pitch outing against the Rangers on Sept. 28. Sevy is affordable and makesfor a fine SP1 if he can throw about 80-85 pitches.

SP2:Zack Greinke (DK $9,100, FD 10,300)

Greinke was 8-1 with a 3.02 ERA in 10 starts after beingacquired from the D-backs in a July trade, going 18-5 with a 2.93 ERA for the2019 season. He even carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning of his finalregular-season start on Sept. 25 in Seattle and shouldn’t need his best stuffto dispatch this Rays team that’s been struggling at the plate and has animplied run total under 4.

Other options: Dallas Keuchel/Julio Teheran (value), Charlie Morton, Max Scherzer

10/7 DFS Hitters

10/7 DFS C: Brian McCann (DK $3,200, FD$2,600)

He’s cheap and has power upside, with a .343 xWOBA against RHPs over his last two seasons. McCann has plenty of playoff experience and already has a couple hits this series. The Braves are a talented bunch and McCann is a fearless team leader. Pivot: Gary Sanchez

10/7 DFS 1B: Paul Goldschmidt, STL (DK$4,200, FD $3,900)

We’regetting a legendary playoff performer at a huge discount here, and he’s facingthe team with the worst pitching – so that’s a huge reason I’m leaning towardGoldschmidt. He put up somesolid numbers and metrics (145 wRC+ and .313 ISO) this season and is mypreferred 1B on this slate. Pivot: Freddie Freeman

10/7 DFS 2B: D.J. LeMahieu, NYY (DK $4,800,3B on FD $3,900)

I’ve toutedhim before in this column and he’s been awesome thus far in the postaseason,with four hits (three XBH) in nine ABs and a homer and 4 RBI. There are someother folks I want to play at 3B on DK, so plug him in at second base on thatsite and UTIL on FD. Pivot: Max Muncy

10/7 DFS 3B: Anthony Rendon, WAS (DK $4,500,FD $4,300)

Plugging in Alex Bregman here is fine, but Charlie Morton should help to limit the amount of damage the Astros do in this game, so I’m using Rendon against LHP Rich Hill. Rendon has three hits in his last two games and Hill isn’t the dominating force he was in previous seasons. With a .289 ISO against LHPs over his last couple of seasons, Rendon — who was REALLY hot when the season started and could be getting going again — has me stuck on him here. Pivot: Gio Urshela/Josh Donaldson

10/7 DFS SS: Didi Gregorius, NYY (DK $3,900,FD $3,300)

When Didi gets hot, he’s a dangerous hitter, and we get him at a very affordable price. His grand slam in Game Two put the contest out of reach for the Twins and gives Sir Didi the requisite confidence to set aside some of his struggles and produce in this circular Yankees lineup. Pivot: Danby Swanson

10/7 DFS OF: Nick Markakis, ATL (DK $3,500,FD $2,800)

Spending down a little more at the corner infield positions allows you some more expensive OF, but I’ll be looking for some value in my outfield and Markakis is the perfect play at this price. He had a double in Game 1 and sits nicely in the Braves lineup between the dangerous Josh Donaldson and lefty-mashing Matt Joyce. Solid numbers against RHPs (.817 OPS, .387 xWOBA over his last two seasons) clinch it for me. Pivot: Michael Brantley/Max Kepler

10/7 DFS OF: Giancarlo Stanton, NYY (DK $3,900,FD $3,700)

Stanton is hitless in the postseason and is still scoring fantasy points – largely because pitchers are afraid of throwing him anything near the strike zone and hes drawing walks, even with the bases loaded! The big fella is still getting in good ABs and is ready to bust out facing an overmatched Jake Odorizzi. Pivot: Aaron Judge/Eddie Rosario

10/7 DFS OF: Brett Gardner, NYY (DK $4,100,FD $3,000)

Lets go right back to the well with Gardy, who’s been hot at the plate over the past few weeks and offers immense upside in the heart of the Yankees lineup. He gets us just under the salary line at his reasonable price point and will be looking to finish off this series with the help of his lively bat. Pivot: Marwin Gonzalez/Josh Reddick

10/7 DFS Featured Single-Game (1:05 EST on FD)

Hitters only – so stack up the best Astros bats and look for valuewithin the more pesky Rays. There’s just a lot of ways to go here, but I’lllikely be using a top Astros hitter in my MVP slot.

MVP (2x) – J. Altuve ($8,500) or Yordan Alvarez ($8,000)

All-Star (1.5x) – A. Bregman ($9,500)

UTIL – T. d’Arnaud ($4,000)

10/7 DFS Featured Showdown (8:40 p.m. on DK)

I may fade the pitchers in this game entirely given the probableextensive use of both bullpens. I’m fine using Severino in the classic format,but he might be a little overpriced for Showdown.

If you’re hell-bent on using Sevy and stacking the best NYY bats,we can go with him at a UTIL spot and use Aroldis Chapman for one of the UTILspots as well.

9/26 DFS and Betting Winners: MLB Cheatsheet Is On Fire

A flashback at some of the best performances from the Wednesday slate plus their outlooks for the remainder of the season on the 9/26 DFS and Betting review and look ahead.

DFS Winner: Zack Greinke

Premium Gold members had access to the MLB Cheatsheet, as well as other parts of the website and the Slack channel with access to all the DFS Pros. Jason selected Zack Greinke as a value pitcher on last night’s slate against the divisional-rival Seattle Mariners on the road. He went 8.1 innings of no-hit ball before allowing back-to-back singles and being relieved. Greinke also added a walk and nine strikeouts in the outing.

Outlook for the rest of the season: This was most likely Greinke’s final start of the regular season. He has been sensational as a member of the Astros rotation since being traded there at the deadline. In 10 starts, he is 8-1 with a 3.02 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in that span. He will most likely be a Game 3 starter in the ALDS and should be great during the postseason.

9/26 DFS Winner: Josh Donaldson

Another winner from the MLB Cheatsheet was Josh Donaldson of the Atlanta Braves. He was listed as a value third baseman going against the Kansas City Royals in an interleague matchup. He went 3-for-6 with three doubles, two runs scored and four RBI.

Outlook for the rest of the season: Donaldson needed a game like this before the season ended since he was on a massive cold stretch. Going into last night’s game, Donaldson was 1-for-22 in his last six games. With the NLDS beginning next weekend, it was crucial for him to get his bat going and begin to look as close to the 2015 A.L. MVP as he can.

9/26 DFS Winner: Franmil Reyes

If you seriously aren’t a Premium member by now, what are you waiting for to join the family and win some money? Jason was on fire with the Cheatsheet and hit on another value spot, this time in the outield. Franmil Reyes had a great night against the divisionrival Chicago White Sox, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Outlook for the rest of the season: In his 47 games played since being traded to Cleveland, Reyes has a .293 OBP and a .737 OPS. For the Indians to get into the playoffs, they need their offense to click. Do not get your hopes up for Franmil Reyes to begin hitting in the final few games of the regular season.

9/26 DFS Winner: Sorano Cirstea

This was a solid bet from our Cash with the Flash article, that you can get as a Premium Gold member. Sorano Cirstea won in three sets against Danka Kovinic in their quarter-final matchup. Cirstea was slated as the eight seed heading into the Tashkent Open and will face off against Katarina Zavatska early Thursday morning. Expect Cirstea to be the favorite going into the matchup.

We’ve got DFS stacks, one-offs and some standout options for GPPs, including one squad that’s bound to break through against a veteran hurler with limited stuff. Let’s go win some green!

9/12 DFS Hitting Stacks of the Day

Atlanta Braves at Drew Smyly

I’m going GPP before cash here and picking on a pitcher with a 2.16% HR/FB rate in Drew Smyly. You can stack Coors all you want in the afternoon slates (what’s with the 2-1 games, fellas?), but I’m looking to a talented Braves lineup that’s loaded with powerful right-handed bats and some left-handed hitters like Freddie Freeman who don’t crumble when a southpaw is on the mound. Atlanta carries a .331 team wOBA against LHPs and Smyly is eminently hittable. The classic 1-5 stack is in play, as are platoon bats Austin Riley (.291/.375/.745 slash) and GPP favorite Adam Duvall (if he cracks the lineup).

LosAngeles Dodgers at Dylan Bundy

Yup, I’m going right back to the Dodgers despite an anemicperformance last night against John Means, who’s a pretty good pitcher in hisown right. Dylan Bundy is a lot easier to attack from both sides of the plate(.398 xwOBA vs. LHBs and .391 vs. RHBs), so I’m not concerned about keepinganybody off. Lefties Joc Pederson, Cody Bellinger and Matt Beaty are all duefor offensive breakouts and Gavin Lux ($2,600 on DK, $2,800 on FD) and CoreySeager ($4,500 on DK, $3,600 on FD) are plenty affordable as well.

Houston Astros vs. Homer Bailey

His name is Homer, and these are the power-hitting Astros. I’m not trying to oversimplify things, because there’s plenty of data to support a blitz on Bailey –including a park shift that favors Houston over the veteran right-hander. Bailey has yielded a .429 xOBA to righties since 2018 when pitching his home games in Oakland and Kansas City, and the Astros are at home and have bats from both sides of the plate that I want exposure to here, including George Springer, Jose Altuve, Michael Brantley, Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez. Value options include Aledmys Diaz and Abraham Toro, not to mention inexpensive catcher Robinson Chirinos.

9/12 DFS Hitting Catcher

Francisco Cervelli, ATL at PHI

DK ($2,700) FD ($2,300)

This is a pure value play considering the Braves have so much talent throughout their lineup and Cervelli does a pretty good job (.414 xwOBA) vs. LHPs. He’s a cheap fifth batter in Braves stacks on DK and makes for an inexpensive utility or C-1B play on FD — if you can stomach rostering just three other bats from this team.

9/12 DFSHitting First Baseman

Mitch Moreland, BOS at TOR

DK ($4,000) FD ($2,800)

You’re getting a great matchup in the middle of a stacked lineup for cheap price with Moreland. Big Mitch has BvP covered in a 4-for-8 small sample against Buchholz, who’s he’s homered against, and there’s plenty to like about going with this sneaky lefty at your 1B spot in a crowded GPP field focused on bigger names. Moreland has double-dinger potential and makes for a fine one-off or part of a Sox mini-stack.

9/12 DFS Hitting Second Baseman

Nick Solak, TEX vs. TB

DK ($4,100) FD ($3,300)

Going right back to the well with Solak, who’s made me look good in this spot, and doesn’t command a very high price. The Rangers are probably only worth considering for a contrarian, large-field GPP stack because they’ve struggled against lefties this season (just a .308 wOBA and 82wRC+), but Solak offers a .379 ISO against LHPs and the venue is ripe for hitting. I’m not scared of Brendan McKay, even though he’s been able to whiff some bats here and there, and Solak is in the heart of the Rangers lineup with plenty of run-producing opportunities.

9/12 DFS Hitting Third Baseman

Josh Donaldson, ATL at PHI

DK ($5,200) FD ($3,500)

Donaldson is historically good against LHPs with a career xwOBA of .XXX and he’s destroyed Smyly in 19 career ABs, including nine hits, three HRs and a 1.629 OPS. Whatever sample size you’re looking at, he’s a great play in a hitter’s park in that potent Atlanta lineup. He and Acuna will be the main focus of my Braves stacks.

9/12 DFS Hitting Shortstop

Corey Seager, LAD at BAL

DK ($4,500) FD ($3,600)

Even after a recent two-homer night, the price on Seager isaffordable and the slick young shortstop has resumed the No. 2 slot in the Dodgersorder. I’ve mentioned my affinity for attacking Bundy in Camden Yards, and thisslate provides an opportunity to get one of the highest upside shortstops (rightthere with Xander Bogaerts) at a cut rate.

9/12 DFS Hitting Outfielders

Andrew Benintendi, BOS at TOR

DK ($4,000) FD ($3,200)

The Red Sox have been slumping at the plate, but Benintendi’s numbers over the past two seasons against RHBs (.405 xwOBA) make me excited to play him against Buchholz. There aren’t too many outfielders at this price point with as much run-producing upside.

Michael Brantley, HOU vs. OAK

DK ($4,300) FD ($4,000)

I have no qualms about you stacking the Astros outfield in its entirety and using both Alvarez and Springer, but if there’s one bat I’d lean towards as a one-off, especially if I’m building an expensive stack elsewhere, it’s Brantley. He’s always a little too cheap and offers plenty of upside with excellent numbers at home (.381 wOBA) and against RHPs (.207 ISO).

Ronald Acuna, Jr., ATL at PHI

DK ($5,500) FD ($4,100)

Acuna has a .488 xwOBA and .277 ISO vs. LHPs this season andremains the premier leadoff hitter in the NL. He’s an essential part of myBraves stacks, sometimes gets ignored because of his lofty price tag, and isplayable in both cash games and GPPs for his solid floor and soaring upside.

On the Defense

This 9/11 MLB DFS slate is rather odd in the sense that for the first time in recent memory I will not be using any bottom of the barrel SP2s on DK. I just do not see any with high enough upside.

Sonny Gray vs. Seattle Mariners

$10,200 FD / $10,600 DK

What do you get when you cross a high strikeout upside pitcher with reverse road splits, who benefits from a positive park shift, facing a team that strikes out over 25 percent of the time versus RHPs? The answer on this 9/11 MLB DFS slate is Sonny Gray, who has allowed four earned runs over his last seven starts.

StephenStrasburg vs. Minnesota Twins

$10,500 FD / $11,400 DK

I know it is hard to swallow taking anyone facing the Twins on this 9/11 MLB DFS slate. After all, they absolutely crush RHPs, and LHPs don’t care for them much either. The thing is, not every pitcher is Strasburg. Over his last 20 innings pitched he has racked up 31 strikeouts. Even if a few runs are allowed here, the Twins still strike out out 21.1 percent of the time versus RHPs, opening the door for huge DFS upside.

AdamPlutko vs. Los Angeles Angels

$7,700 FD / $8,800 DK

The Angels are a very unpredictable to team to attack in DFS, and this 9/11 MLB DFS slate is no different. They are 13^th in MLB versus RHPs in wOBA, and 23rd in strikeouts. When you combine these factors, they all spell stay away. Regardless, in Plutko’s last start facing the Angels he went 5 1/3 innings allowing one earned run while sending four batters to the bench in dismay. I expect similar numbers here again tonight.

ReynaldoLopez vs. Kansas City Royals

$8,600 FD / $9,800 DK

Reynaldo Lopez may not be the greatest thing since the grilled cheese sandwich, but he does offer some upside on this 9/11 MLB DFS slate. Although he has had his ups and downs versus the Royals this season, the last time he faced them he had eight strikeouts over six innings, allowing one earned run. In his last start he pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run with 11 strikeouts versus Cleveland.

On theAttack

There are the obvious stacks pretty much any time there is a Coors Field game, and this 9/11 MLB DFS slate is no different. It is going to be rather difficult to bat load tonight unless you completely fade decent pitching.

ZachEflin vs. Atlanta Braves

With everyone trying to fit Cardinals, Rockies, and Dodgers in their lineups on this 9/11 MLB DFS slate, let’s look elsewhere. Eflin has a 19.06 ERA over 5 2/3 innings vs. Atlanta this year. Despite pitching well in his recent starts I see a major blow up here tonight.

Notable Bats

Freddie Freeman is a top play most nights and tonightis no different. He is posting a .424 wOBA versus RHPs this season with a wRC+of 162.

Josh Donaldson is 6-for-9 with a home run and six RBIversus Eflin. He also is sporting a .393 wOBA versus RHPs on the season.

Matt Joyce is batting .385 with two home runs over the last seven days and carries a .374 wOBA versus RHPs.

Ryan Weber vs. Toronto Blue Jays

In the words of my stepdaughter Hailee, “oof”. Even though the Blue Jays are 26^th in MLB versus RHPs, they still offer a bevy of runs on any given night. With Weber returning from Triple-A tonight, I am sprinkling in Jays bats on this 9/11 MLB DFS slate. Keep in mind, this is more of a boom-or-bust GPP play.

Notable Bats

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has the lowest strikeoutpercentage of any daily starter by far at 17.4 percent versus RHP. He also hasa .365 wOBA against as well.

Rowdy Tellez homered in his only AB versus Shawarynthis season, and I see another huge night tonight batting in the five spot.

Randall Grichuk fares better versus LHPs, but he does offer HR upside facing scrub pitchers at a discount.

Monkey Knife Fight Prop Pick

The Indians are 19th in MLB in strikeout versus RHPs, I am going under with Peters, failing to reach this number in three of his last four starts.

The last time Plutko faced the Angels he had four strikeouts. I see this easily happening again. Over all the way.

8/26 MLB DFS Winner: Win Daily CEO and Founder Jason Mezrahi

Our leader had a very prolific weekend, finishing second in the FanDuel MLB Monster on Saturday, winning 10K. He then came back to take the same tournament down on Sunday, finishing first and earning 20K!

8/26 MLB DFS Winner: Paul Goldschmidt

Our founder and CEO Jason Mezrahi was all over Goldschmidt in this matchup on the Premium Gold Cheat Sheet as a value pick. He went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and a pair of RBI.

Outlook for the rest of the season: His numbers are down in his first year as a Cardinal. Goldschmidt isn’t putting the ball in the air as much as he had in recent years. Even with that stat, he is still at 29 HRs this season. Expect him to continue hitting and for a team that is surging right now.

8/26 MLB DFS Winner: Josh Donaldson

Another great pick by Mezrahi here as Donaldson was a beast in New York against the Mets. He went 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs and was the entire Atlanta offense.

Outlook for the rest of the season: The probable Comeback Player of the Year is swinging the stick at a ridiculous rate. He is now at 32 long balls on the year. He’s a key factor to this young Braves team with a veteran leadership and stroke at the dish. He could be the reason they hold off the Nationals in the NL East.

8/26 MLB DFS Winner: Reynaldo Lopez

The Data Driven Pitcher Projection Model expected a solid performance from Reynaldo Lopez and he delivered. Lopez went five no-hit innings with two walks and six strikeouts while picing up his eighth victory of the season. He didn’t give the length that opens a lot of eyes but it was a great outing.

Outlook for the rest of the season: The second-half Lopez has been a lot better on the mound than the beginning of the season. He has a 2.82 ERA in 54.1 innings since the break. Expect him to be a solid pitcher and be a big piece in the rotation for the White Sox in 2020 and beyond.

8/26 MLB DFS Winner: The Houston Astros

Both guys had the Astros as a team to stack and that was a money pick. This pick didn’t make its mark until the late innings as they scored nine of their 11 runs in the last two innings of the game. Eleven runs, 10 hits and six walks as a team at the plate is something that will get the job done in DFS.

Outlook for the rest of the season: This offense is one of the best in baseball. They are facing a weaker division and rank top-five in every offensive category, including leading the majors in OBP. This offense can keep hitting and helping their potent pitching staff to compete for the best record in the major leagues.

It will make weather tough to figure out though, and the cities/teams we need to key in on are New York, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Boston and Baltimore. So, let’s get into our 8/7 DFS Hitting plays!

8/7 DFS Hitting Catcher

Carson Kelly, ARI vs. PHI

DK ($3,900) FD ($2,600)

I don’t like to tout myself but every time I recommend Kelly, he seems to homer. It’s easy to see why when you look at his splits, with Kelly providing a .383 AVG, .471 OBP, .767 SLG and 1.238 OPS against left-handers so far this season. That’s why he’ll always find his way into my articles when he gets the platoon advantage in his favor and these are some of the most underappreciated splits in the game. Getting to face Jason Vargas is only a bonus, with the Phillies lefty posting an xFIP north of 5.00 so far this season.

8/7 DFS Hitting First Basemen

Jose Abreu, CWS at DET

DK ($4,000) FD ($3,800)

This DK price is really surprising and it’s a wonder why one of the most consistent players in baseball has seen such a drastic price drop. We’re talking about a player who’s a guarantee for 30 homers and 100 RBI every year and he’s on pace to surpass those numbers yet again this season. While this price is fantastic, we have to like this matchup too. Tyler Alexander has only thrown 22 innings in the Majors, which is scary when you consider his 4.98 ERA and 1.46 WHIP dating back to 2016 at the minors. It also puts the platoon advantage in Abreu’s favor and he’s got a .944 OPS against lefties since 2017.

8/7 DFS Hitting Second Basemen

Keston Hiura, MIL at PIT

DK ($4,600) FD ($3,100)

This is one of those cases where I like Hiura on one site and not another. This DraftKings price is much more indicative of the guy we’ve seen and that makes this FanDuel price an absolute bargain. We’re talking about a guy who’s generating a .299 AVG, .560 SLG and .928 OPS. That’s really no surprise when you look at his 1.095 OPS at Triple-A this season and he’s simply one of the most dangerous second basemen in the league. Getting to face Trevor Williams only adds to Hiura’s value, with him pitching to a 6.64 ERA and 1.57 WHIP over his last seven starts.

8/7 DFS Hitting Third Basemen

Josh Donaldson, ATL at MIN

DK ($4,800) FD ($3,600)

Donaldson has returned to his MVP form as of late and it’s done wonders for the Braves. Over his last 28 games, Donaldson has 11 homers and 19 RBI en route to a .415 OBP, .667 SLG and 1.081 OPS. That’s the stud that we’ve been waiting for and that doesn’t even take into consideration that he gets to face a lefty here. For his career, Donaldson has a .571 SLG and .954 OPS with the platoon advantage in his favor. It happens to be a weak lefty too, with Martin Perez pitching to a 4.58 ERA and 1.40 WHIP this season.

8/7 DFS Hitting Shortstop

Manny Machado, SD at SEA

DK ($4,300) FD ($4,000)

Machado is one of the hottest hitters in the game and he’s always tough to fade whenever he faces a left-hander. Since a series in Colorado in the middle of June, Machado is hitting .330 over his last 42 games while generating a .653 SLG and 1.027 OPS in that span. It’s really no surprise when you look at his numbers against lefties, with Machado posting a .391 AVG, .484 OBP, .823 SLG and 1.307 OPS with the platoon advantage in his favor this season. That’s obviously ridiculous production and it really makes him enticing against Yusei Kikuchi’s 5.49 ERA and 1.48 WHIP.

8/7 DFS Hitting Outfielders

Yordan Alvarez, HOU vs. COL

DK ($5,500) FD ($4,100)

This dude is simply absurd and his majestic blast on Tuesday shows just how much power this kid has. We’re talking about a guy who has 13 homers and 41 RBI in just 41 games played en route to a .340 AVG. That’s really no surprise when you see his .343 AVG and 1.185 OPS at Triple-A this season and it’s clear this kid is going to be a threat for years to come. What makes him particularly scary here is this matchup, as he gets the platoon advantage against Peter Lambert and his 5.71 ERA and 1.46 WHIP.

Hunter Renfroe, SD at SEA

DK ($4,300) FD ($3,000)

Much like Machado, Renfroe has made minced meat of left-handers all season long. In fact, the big outfielder has a .738 SLG and 1.049 OPS with the platoon advantage in his favor this season. That’s why this club has mashed lefties all season long and Renfroe actually has an OPS north of .950 against southpaws for his career. Getting to face Kikuchi may be the best part of this play though, with the Seattle southpaw pitching to a 7.65 ERA and 1.91 WHIP over his last eight starts.

Stephen Piscotty, OAK at CHC

DK ($3,400) FD ($3,000)

This is a strange play but Piscotty has been abusing left-handers all season long. In fact, Piscotty’s .952 OPS against southpaws this season is 300 points higher than his OPS against righties. That’s why he’s typically in the heart of the order under these circumstances and Jose Quintana is not really a pitcher we need to worry about. In fact, the Cubs lefty has a 4.40 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, which are some of the worst numbers of his career.

Monkey Knife Fight Pick of the Day

Gerrit Cole Over 7.5 Strikeouts

We are talking about the league leader in strikeouts and K rate facing an offense that sits 26th in K rate, 29th in road OPS and last in road OBP. This prop should be two Ks higher than it is.
