8/8 UCL Slate

Saturday afternoon, the Champion’s League Round of Sixteen will be wrapping up with two final games. Napoli at Barcelona and Chelsea at Bayern Munich.

Similar to yesterday, we have one of the world’s elite players attempting to help his team stay alive in the competition. Messi and Barcelona come into their match tied 1-1 on aggregate. It has been a disappointing season for Barcelona and they have had relatively poor recent form. Meanwhile, Napoli has been sort of middling as well.

The other matchup between Bayern Munich and Chelsea could get ugly. Willian is out of the fold, as well as Chelsea’s young star and great American Christian Pulisic. Considering Bayern Munich smashed Chelsea in London 3-0 when Chelsea was at full strength, I would not have very high hopes as a Chelsea fan.

Normally, Bayern Munich might rest a couple of players in a spot like this. However, unlike in most years, their domestic season in the Bundesliga is already over and not running concurrently. When you also factor in collective fear induced by Liverpool’s epic 4-0 second leg against Barcelona last season, I think that Bayern goes all out here to ensure that there is no Cinderella story.

UCL Best Bet

Chelsea (+700) at Bayern Munich (-286) – Under 3.5 Goals (-136) – 3PM ET – Saturday 8/8 – *BAYERN MUNICH*

DraftKings | FanDuel

The Betting Game Plan

Was there any question? The other game leans Barcelona’s way at home but should be a good one. Meanwhile, this should be a bloodbath. Bayern Munich should really be a -400 favorite here against Frank Lampard’s injury depleted Chelsea squad.

Early Slate

Napoli needs a Draw or Win or a Liverpool Win or Draw to advanceto the Round of 16

Genk (+1500) at Napoli (-575) – Under 3.5 Goals (-105)

It hasn’t been the best season domestically for Napoli. Standing at only seventh in the Serie A table at this point in the season, you could say they have been the Italian version of Tottenham. However, here at home, against a vastly inferior Genk team, they should be able to pick up three points. Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne are the primary goal scorers here and usually only one of the two is in the lineup. We have former PSV Eindhoven and Mexican national team star winger Hirving Lozano and Jose Callejon filling out the primary options in the attack. I am normally a big fan of elite center back Kalidou Koulibaly on FanDuel but this isn’t an ideal spot as he should not have much action on defense.

Liverpool needs a Draw or Win to advance to the Round of 16

Liverpool (-125) at Red Bull Salzburg (+275) – Under 3.5 Goals (-115)

This is the main event of either slate in my opinion. Liverpool rested Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold on Saturday and had rested Mohammed Salah and Roberto Firmino before that on Wednesday. They will be bringing their A-Team as they will need to walk away with a point here in order to continue to defend their title. These are the defending UCL champions and no team has been better in big games.

On FanDuel, it’s Mane, Salah, and Firmino. On DraftKings, it’s the wingbacks Alexander Arnold and Andy Robertson. As for Red Bull Salzburg, behind the foot of young phenom Erling Haaland, they have been the Cinderella team of this year’s Champion’s League Group stages. They could make waves by winning this game and advancing but it will be a really tall task for a young team like this. Either way, given their fast-paced style, I would expect goals here on both sides.

UCL 12/10 Main Slate

Chelsea needs a Win or an Ajax Win to Advance to the Roundof 16. If both those games draw there would be some crazy tiebreaker based ongoal difference when the dust settles

Lille (+1400) at Chelsea (-500) – Over 3 goals (-125)

Frank Lampard’s men have a great chance to stomp out their ticket to the round of 16 at home vs. a pathetic Lille squad. They come in the slate’s highest favorite. I would expect Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic, and Willian to all be in, as they have been the driving forces to help Chelsea get to this point. All three are significantly cheaper on FanDuel. On DraftKings, I would prioritize Willian at forward among the three with his skill set that involves a lot of crosses and role on set pieces. I think that Chelsea gets the job done here and makes it a moot point if that happens in the Ajax game for their purposes.

Dortmund needs a win or draw coupled with an Inter Milanloss to Barcelona to Advance to the Round of 16

Slavia Prague (+900) at Borussia Dortmund (-335)

Dortmund will be at home, where it is one of the toughest places to play in Europe behind the famed Yellow Wall. I think that they win this game, but it might not be enough with their destiny outside of their control at this point. Jadon Sancho has been leading the line, with Marco Reus up top alongside him. Eden Hazard’s brother, Thorgan Hazard has been the main set-piece taker so he is worth a look on DraftKings. This Slavia Prague team is a bit tougher than the oddsmakers are giving them credit for, even forcing a draw with Barcelona earlier on in UCL. That said, I think Dortmund are fine plays here. I just don’t want to see them in the Round of 16 as I think Inter Milan is better and Dortmund will just be fodder for an elite team if in.

Inter Milan needs a Win or a Dortmund Loss to Advance to theRound of 16

Barcelona (+425) at Inter Milan (-180) – Under 3 goals (-115)

Another historic venue, this time the San Siro, will play host to another huge matchup. Inter Milan has been one of the hottest teams in Europe, this past weekend ousting Juventus for the top of the Serie A table. The forward combination of Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku have been the main proponents in leading that charge. With the top spot in the group already clinched, the expectation is that Messi, along with other Barcelona veterans, will rest. This will allow Barcelona Coach Ernesto Valverde the opportunity to get some youngsters some time in the Champion’s League. The expectation is Antoine Greizmann will lead the line alongside the likes of Ansu Fati and Carles Perez. I think that ultimately Inter Milan delivers here in front of the home crowd and love the two forwards on FanDuel.

Ajax need a Draw or Win, or a Chelsea Draw or Loss, to Advanceto the Round of 16

Valencia (+370) at Ajax (-160) – Under 3.5 goals (-140)

Ajax will be one of the more popular teams on the slate, given how fantasy-friendly they tend to be already. When you add in the fact, that they need a result here at home, it will only add to it. Hakim Ziyech is still getting huge ownership on DraftKings and with little else to pay up for, he makes a lot of sense on this slate Beyond that, we have striker Dusan Tadic, and if going contrarian, attacking midfielder Donny Van de Beek. We might get a cheap striker in Hunteelar for FanDuel. Winger Quincy Promes has already been ruled out due to injury.

Lyon needs a Win or Draw and a Zenit St. Petersburg Loss ora Draw resulting in a worse goal difference to Advance to the Round of 16

RB Leipzig (+170) at Lyon (+150) – Under 3 Goals (-120)

Red Bull Leipzig has already clinched a spot in the Round of16, so all eyes are on Lyon here. Memphis Depay is the heart and soul of thisteam and is probably the only piece of Lyon I want on this slate. Lyon is inseventh in the Ligue One table and that league has not been the strongest.

Zenit St. Petersburg needs a Win or Draw and a Lyon Loss ora Draw resulting in a worse goal difference to Advance to the Round of 16

Zenit St. Petersburg (+245) at Benfica (+110) – Over 2.5 goals (-125)

This should be a slow, defensive, low total game as the odds suggest. Zenit will have an uphill battle however on road soil against a Benfica team that has stepped up its play as of late. I don’t mind their attack though in large-field tournaments as there is certainly some upside here. Artem Dzyuba can score goals anywhere as the World Cup helped the show.

Things to keep in mind:

The most important part of DFS soccer occurs the hour or so before the games when the lineups come out. What’s nice is that the more pro-active DFS player has an edge in this regard. On DraftKings be sure to save people from the later games for the utility spot if possible so you have the most flexibility possible to make changes in case that player is unexpectedly resting. Make a backup plan if possible and leave any $ necessary.  Check out the actual formations on ESPN once lineups come out to ensure players are in appropriate spots.

Defenders – Only FanDuel’s point system rewards defensive oriented players. We do not want central defenders on DraftKings if possible but rather want the defenders on the wings more involved on their offensive end. You can double check formations on ESPN when the lineups come out.

Make multiple lines. Scoring can be highly variant and thusrather than spend up on one big entry, create a number of small $ lines to helpprovide yourself some balance.

Check player minutes to make sure you have guys who are playing entire games and not getting subbed off mid game on a regular basis. DraftKings has players minutes listed.

Wednesday, August 28th, 2019 (UCL Three Match Slate) – 3:00 PM ET

Matches:

Apoel Nicosia (Cyprus) at Ajax (The Netherlands) – Apoel +1200 , Ajax -550 (heavy favorite) , +240 draw (90 minutes). Over 2.5 goals (+105), Under 3.5 goals (-125)

CFR Cluj (Romania) at Slavia Prague (Czech Republic) – Slavia Prague -185 favorite, CFR Cluj +525, +290 draw. Over 2.5 goals (+105), Under 2.5 goals (-125)

LASK Linz (Austria) at Club Brugge (Belgium) – Brugge – 135 favorite, LASK Linz +385, +240 draw. Over 2.5 goals (-105), Under 2.5 goals (-115)

UCL Cliff Notes

Unlike the Tuesday slate where the matches were close with two draws and only Olympiakos winning “value goalie strikes again”, this slate has some big favorites. Most of Tuesday’s plays hit and I expect the same on this slate.

The first time around I crushed this slate and screenshots are below so you can see the prior ownership percentages (I had made two lineups). The top line shows cash ownership and the bottom two are tournament.

Chalk Talk

The huge chalk will be Ajax, who come in at -550 to win at the time of writing. They are far and away the most notable team on the slate, most recently gaining attention by finishing in the Final Four of the UCL. With thrilling two leg victories over both Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus team in hand it took a miraculous effort by Lucas Moura and Tottenham to stop them from reaching last year’s UCL final vs. Liverpool.

Over the offseason this team lost young defensive stalwart Matthijs De Ligt, who was sold for big money to Juventus, as well as central midfielder Frenkie De Jong who was shipped off to Barcelona. However, outside of that this team is largely unchanged. Ajax has the highest scoring projection on the slate and should win handily at home. Hakim Ziyech is the play of all plays on this slate and will likely come in at 90-100% ownership in all formats. This pairing is currently tied at nil on aggregate but that will likely change quickly as the home fans will be singing the team’s anthem Three Little Birds repeatedly throughout the day. I think you might see lots of stars and scrubs Ajax stacks just out of familiarity for people.

Looking beyond Ajax we have two teams in Club Brugge and Slavia Prague that are significantly better than their opponents and now have home advantage. Not surprisingly, many of the players written up will hail from these sides. Because there is no need to be too contrarian, let’s ride the backs of these heavy favorites.

Forwards

High End

Dusan Tadic– Ajax – $12,100 – Tadic is probably not a cash play for me with salary considered. That said, Tadic is a near necessary part of any Ajax stack and a great tournament play. He is the primary forward for the team expected to score the most of the slate and takes Ajax’s penalty kicks. While I’m usually not a fan of paying this sort of price tag at forward, I’ll make an exception.

Abdel Billel Omrani – CFR Cluj – $8,500 – This is a contrarian play as he was only 20 percent owned at home for the first leg. However, this is a player with a tremendous goal scoring record. Omrani has eight goals and three assists in 11 combined UCL and Romanian Liga One matches so far this season. Considering he takes the penalty kicks, if CFR Cluj scores it will most likely be this man’s goal.

David Neres – Ajax – $8,700 – Due to matchup he gets an honorable mention as he can certainly score a goal anytime. However, Neres also comes with a low floor for this price and a huge risk of substitution. In fact, he was subbed out in the first leg of this matchup.

Low End

Luis Openda/David Okereke – Club Brugge– $5,800/$7,400 – This team has two primary strikers, Luis Openda and David Okereke, the latter brought in over the summer to replace the Brazilian striker Wesley who is now with the EPL’s Aston Villa. Both of those two are in play for tournaments and Openda will get ownership if in just because he is cheap. Last time out both Openda and Okereke started alongside each other but I think that is unlikely to happen again. If one is out, bump the other. Okereke for his extra two years of age (21 to 19) is the more polished of the two players. If price was of no concern, he is the better play of the two.

Emmanuel Dennis – Club Brugge – $6,800 – Dennis is more of a cash play as opposed to the two Brugge strikers listed above. It is less likely he lights up the scoreboard. However, it is also less likely he gets subbed out or totally busts. In a cash game the nine fantasy points he scored last time out would work. Dennis is the only one of the three with UCL experience.

Peter Olayinka – Slavia Prague – $5,700 – I think when people consider a SP forward it will be between him and Mick Van Buren at $6,100, if they are both in. However, Olayinka has a higher floor, is less likely to be substituted out, and has a solid resume with six goals, three assists across twenty appearances in the Czech Fortuna Liga last year. He didn’t do too much last time out so people might sleep on him.

Midfielders

Hakim Ziyech– Ajax– $12,600 –*CORE PLAY* – He should be the first player you lock into your lineup in all formats. He is one of the most talented players in Europe and has the largest floor on this slate with upside as well. His ownership will be the highest of any player on the slate.

Nicolae Stanciu – Slavia Prague – $8,900 – Stanciu is the main set piece taker for Slavia and the primary offensive facilitator as the number eight. He should be in a good position to grab a point whether a goal or assist and rack up crosses as well.

Lukas Mastopust – Slavia Prague – $5,400 – Mastopust was a hidden gem for me in the first leg of this matchup, scoring a goal at low ownership. He gives us a part of the Slavia Prague attack for a cheap price and had seven goals and eight assists in 21 appearances in the Czech Fortuna Liga last season.

Donny Van de Beek – Ajax – $8,400 – This is more of a tournament play. However, beyond Ziyech and Tadic, I prefer Van de Beek to David Neres as the next most likely Ajax player to get on the scoreboard.

Defensemen

Punt Spot – Some will look at the box scores and see that Nicolas Tagliafico had three goals in ten UCL games last year. That said, Taglifico scored a total of only two goals and had four assists in 29 appearances last year in the Dutch Eriedivisie. Considering he has no role on set pieces where Ziyech has a monopoly, at $6,200 that is an overspend. People will just grab the cheapest wing defenders that they can find. Be sure to check lineups to see if there are any potential bargains.

Goalie

Andre Onana – Ajax – $5,900 – Onana is the cash game goalie. He is practically a lock for the win and has a great chance for a clean sheet. The main concern would be shot volume as it wouldn’t be shocking if he doesn’t face a single shot. That said without De Ligt in the back to help shadow forwards on counter attacks, the Ajax defense isn’t quite the same as last year.

Simon Mignolet – Club Brugge – $5,600 – The former Liverpool backup should be popular as well. Mignolet should face a few more shots than Onana and should pick up the win here.

 Tuesday, August 27th, 2019 (3 Match UCL Slate) – 3:00 PM ET

Matches:

  1. Olympiacos (Greece) at FC Krasnodor (Russia) – Olympiacos +250 underdog, Krasnodor +105 favorite, + 240 draw. Over 2.5 goals (-115), Under 2.5 goals (-110)
  • Young Boys (Switzerland) at Red Star Belgrade (Serbia) – Young Boys +155 slight favorite, Red Star Belgrade +165, +235 draw. Over 2.5 goals (-130), Under 2.5 goals (+110)
  • Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) at Rosenborg (Norway) – Dinamo– 110 favorite, Rosenborg +180, +240 draw. Over 2.5 goals (-110), Under 2.5 goals (-110)

UCL Cliff Notes

Just in case you ever wanted to swim with DraftKings’ soccer sharks, I will throw you a life vest and take you aboard my cruiser. These UCL qualifiers slates do not have the biggest prize pools but are great slates to perform a little research to get an edge. Six of the teams we will see advance over the next two days will be on much bigger UCL slates to come beginning in a month or so when the group stage begins.

I recommend not dropping too much bankroll on these UCL qualifier slates but even with some restraint I was able to crush the first legs last week. I have provided an image of the lineup I used last leg below at the bottom of the article as it gives us a glimpse of how ownership shook out.

Olympiacos has a 4-0 aggregate lead and will be willing to sit back on the road. Dinamo has a lesser two goal aggregate edge but probably won’t be content with it. Rosenborg does not provide much of a scoring threat so a middling game should help them advance.

For DFS, my main focus is on the Young Boys/Red Star Belgrade matchup. As the Vegas odds suggest this should be the highest scoring affair. Both teams played fairly open in the first leg and I would expect that to continue. Young Boys controlled most of the major metrics at home and I expect that to level out a little on the trip to Serbia where Red Star have been dominant at home. Both teams have UCL experience from last year’s group stages as Red Star even pulled off an upset of Liverpool.

UCL DraftKings Rankings

Forward

Shapi Suleymanov– FC Krasnodor – *CORE PLAY IF IN* – $4,500 – I like to pay down at forward as much as possible on DraftKings as most strikers are goal dependent and have no floor. Suleymanov did not start the first leg and did start in Krasnodor’s Russian Premier League Match over the weekend. However, if he is in he will be major chalk.

Guillaume Hoarau, J. Nsame, Roger Assale – Young Boys Forwards – $8,800, $8,000, $7,800 – These guys are all somewhat goal dependent although with the pace of the game they should have floors just by attacking. Be sure to check the lineup on ESPN or elsewhere for this one before lock. I used both Nsame and Assale last time with Hoarau out. Be sure to check the formation as last time Nsame was a true number #9 alone up top which gave him a bump. I’d rank them in the order I listed but it’s really a coin toss.

Mislav Orsic – Dinemo Zagreb – $8,200 – With a pretty good scoring background looking through his domestic logs, Orsic is a strong play here. I think Dinemo is simply the better team than Rosenborg.

Wanderson – FC Krasnodor – $8,100 – I am not sure using two Krasnodor forwards is anything but a tournament move. However, with a role on set pieces there is a floor and Krasnodor has every reason to up the pace and try to attack. I don’t think I am considering him as a midfield play, solely at forward. We also have to see this Krasnodor lineup as it is very likely that at least one of the two listed forwards will not be in.

Midfielders

Marko Marin – Red Star Belgrade – $8,900 –*CORE PLAY* – On DraftKings I tend to load up on set piece takers in all formats. They provide us the floors we need to counter some variance. You can see by the box scores from last year’s UCL group stage how consistent this player is. At home in a fast paced must win game he should provide that same floor.

Dani Olmo – Dinamo Zagreb – $7,900 – I’d reserve him for tournaments but think he will be an awesome tournament play on this slate. He didn’t do much during the first leg at home. The 21 year-old Spainard is a former product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia youth academy. He was named player of the year in the Croatian Top Flight last season. He has no floor but can also go off and score a couple goals.

Miralem Sulejmani– Young Boys – $7,300 – I like guys who have a monopoly on set pieces and that’s just not the case here with Young Boys. It creates a situation where it lowers the set piece takers floor and these guys don’t have huge scoring upside to begin with. That said I think the price is okay and he has a great matchup. If either him or Aebischer is not in and set pieces aren’t a timeshare it would be a huge boost to the others value.

Mathieu Valbuena – Olympiacos – $9,600 – I absolutely hate this matchup as he has no incentive to attack and he’s too expensive. However, the diminutive Valbuena is a much better player even at his advanced age than Sulejmani. He offers perhaps the second highest floor of all guys listed at midfield aside of Marin. I’d play him in a cash game and think in a tournament you’re okay to fade him. He should not be as highly owned as he was last time out nor does he deserve to be. A substitution around the 70th minute would not be too shocking either.

Michael Aebischer – Young Boys – $5,600 – I had to mention him as he will likely be popular again due to a partial role on set pieces. Last time Sulejmani was out as well eliminating the set piece time share and he was $4,300. If he has a monopoly on set pieces he is certainly at minimum a cash game play. He was aided by an assist last time out as he otherwise would’ve busted.

Defensemen

V. Eggen Hedenstand – Red Star Belgrade -*CORE PLAY* – $5,000 – His role on set pieces allowed him to crush value last time out. He was very popular at $3,800 as you can imagine but I don’t mind the extra $1,200 for the home matchup.

As far as a second defender I would just punt there. When lineups come out check to see if there are any cheap wing defenders (on the outside) as they tend to have more attacking value. I might just take the cheapest available wing defender on the slate.

Goalie

Jose Sa – Olympiacos – $4,500 – The lowest priced goalie despite his team coming off a 4-0 victory last leg. He should face plenty of shots as Krasnodor needs to score 4 goals now before the end of 90 minutes to tie. These sort of situations can lead to some stupid shots and corresponding easy saves. Should Suleymanov be in and score, it wouldn’t be the end of the world.
