Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  I’m Jared and I’ll be your host.  Tonight we have a solid 10 game slate where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL slate on Fanduel and Draftkings.

Before we dive in I want to highlight some terms you’ll see in my article that may be foreign to you:

  • Corsi – Any shot attempt (goals, shots on net, misses and blocks) outside of the shootout
  • Even Strength – Play where both teams have the same number of players (including goalies) on the ice. Includes 5v5, 4v4, 3v3
  • Power Play – Play where the team has more players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 5v4, 5v3, 4v3
  • Penalty Kill – Play where the team has fewer players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 4v5, 3v4, 3v5

Goaltending

Craig Anderson ($7.9k DK/$6.9k FD) vs. Detroit Red Wings – I really love the spot tonight for Anderson.  He hit a little bit of a bump in the road in his last start against San Jose but the Sharks are better than advertised.  On the year Anderson has a solid .921 save % and 2.49 GAA.  He’s facing a Red Wings team tonight that is currently struggling.

They’re riding a 4 game losing streak and have only scored once in 2 games in November.  The Red Wings should also be without their Captain in Dylan Larkin who is away from the team for personal reason.  I’m a big fan of him on both sites tonight, especially FD where he’s below $7k.

Robin Lehner ($7.8K DK/$7.4k FD) vs. Montreal Canadiens – If Lehner gets the nod in goal tonight I’m a big fan of him being one of the top goalies on the night.  He’s coming off his best outing of the year after stopping 38 of 39 shots from the Senators.  While he’s had a few rough outings this season so far, he also has a very solid .915 save %.

The Golden Knights give up a ton of shots and Lehner is facing a team tonight in the Canadiens that have one of the worst shooting %’s in the league at just 6.88%.  Look for the Canadiens to fire a bunch of pucks on net tonight with Lehner saving almost all of them.  He’s a solid pick on both sites.

Igor Shesterkin ($7.3k DK/$7.9k FD) vs. Calgary Flames – The price of Shesterkin on DK tonight seems a bit low for a goaltender with a .943 save % and just a 1.85 GAA.  Shesty as us Rangers fans like to call him has been one of the best goalies in the league so far.  He’s reached at least 22 points in 4 of his 8 starts this year with 2 of them being over 30.  Rangers give up close to 33 shots per game so we know there will be a ton of volume and volume is good for goalies in DFS.  Flames have started out November pretty slow with back to back losses.  Look for them to make it 3 straight losses tonight as they get stonewalled by Shesterkin.

Stacks

Buffalo 1 (Thompson/Skinner/Asplund/Dahlin)

The Red Wings have been one of the more defensively challenged teams so far on this young season.  They have a corsi of 44% which is one of the worst numbers of the 20 teams on the ice tonight.  They’re also giving up more than 3.5 goals per game.  I’m going to target Detroit with the top line of Buffalo who has been pretty solid over their last 5 games.

Combined the group of Thompson, Skinner, and Asplund have 6 goals over the last 5 games and 12 points.  They correlate very well together as they play together on the power play as well.  Asplund is the cheapest of the bunch at just $3.6k tonight on DK and has been the most productive with 3 goals and 3 assists in the last 5.  Buffalo is one of the my favorite teams on the night and they are extremely affordable.

Washington 1 (Ovechkin/Kuznetsov/Wilson/Carlson)

Our first stack in the Sabres was cheap and it opens up salary for us to be able to afford Ovechkin(Ovi).  Ovi is on a heater right now with 5 goals and 8 points over his last 5 games.  Philly hasn’t been giving too many goals this year, but it’s not for a lack of trying.

They’re giving up more than 33 shots per game and nearly 14 high danger chances per game.  There will be a ton of volume for the Capitals in terms of shots and the Capitals are a team that loves to shoot the puck.   While I love the entire line tonight, it’s possible that I end up just pairing Ovi with Carlson.  Carlson is playing extremely well right now and I want a piece of him.  He has points in 3 straight and has been averaging more than 4 shots plus bocks in those.  The two of them also play together on the power play.

Vegas PP1 (Stephenson/Dadonov/Smith/Pietrangelo)

This is probably the Canadiens last game before they get Carey Price back and I want to take advantage of the spot.  Jake Allen isn’t a bad goalie, but he’s not Carey Price.  The Canadiens have struggled quite a bit this year, with goaltending being part of the problem.

They’re giving up more than 3 goals per games this year thanks to a save % less than 90.  My thought process with picking Vegas top power play has to do with the fact that no team has given up more power play goals this season than the Canadiens.  So far this year they’ve given up 15 goals when down at least a man.

While Vegas’ power play isn’t as strong with guys like Karlsson out, I still like their chances tonight.  My core here would Stephenson and Dadonov as they play together at even strength too.  Over the last 5 games, Stephenson and Dadonov have combined for 4 goals and 5 assists.  They should do well tonight.

Other stacks (Colorado 1, Winnipeg 1, Seattle 2, San Jose 2, Toronto 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Brent Burns – San Jose
  • Adam Fox – New York Rangers
  • Moritz Seider – Detroit Red Wings
  • Filip Hronek – Detroit Red Wings
  • Shea Theodore – Vegas Golden Knights

Summary

On tap tonight we have an original 6 match up with the Boston Bruins heading to Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs and we also have also have 4 teams (Rangers, Jets, Devils, and Coyotes) on the tail end of back to back games.  While I didn’t write them up as one of my top 3 stacks tonight, I do really love the spot for the Seattle tonight.  They’re facing a struggling Coyotes team that will also have tired legs.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

Friday 11/5 NHL Breakdown

Hey all, and welcome to November! This first Friday in November offers us a smaller, five game slate, that looks a little bit tougher at first glance. We have some weird matchups tonight, and the slate doesn’t lock until 8pm Eastern.

Goalies

John Gibson – Anaheim Ducks: The Ducks host the winless Coyotes tonight, and they should be able to handle them. The Coyotes are the worst team in the league right now, and this is a pretty solid opportunity for a win for Gibby. He is sporting a 2.57 GAA and 0.917SV% on the season, and will look to improve upon those numbers tonight. Expect a lower shot volume, limiting his upside.

Thatcher Demko – Vancouver Canucks: Vancouver hosts the Nashville Predators tonight, who are scoring just under 3 goals per game on the road in their last five road games. Vancouver at home is only giving up 1.8 goals against per game, which is a great combination for a shutdown performance for Demko.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Karel Vejmelka – Arizona Coyotes: Vejmelka has numbers similar to John Gibson, and he really hasn’t been playing poorly. Unfortunately for him, the team in front of him is very bad at defense, so he has to stand on his head. Tonight should be no different, so the upside is there from a shot total standpoint. The hope we have with this play is that he doesn’t let it get out of hand. Maybe we get lucky and he snags his first win of the season tonight. Consider Mackenzie Blackwood as a GPP pick as well, as the goalie for the New Jersey Devils makes his season debut after returning from injury.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Edmonton Oilers 1 – Leon Draisaitl/Connor McDavid/Jesse Puljujarvi/Tyson Barrie: How do we pass on these guys at this point? Edmonton has been steamrolling their opponents in the early part of the season, and tonight should be a fantastic display of hockey, as they face the New York Rangers on home ice. The Rangers come into this game allowing a measly 2 goals against per game on the road, but the Oilers have been scoring a whopping 4.33 goals per game at home. The way Draisaitl has been playing, you want to play him until the wheels fall off.

Anaheim Ducks Power Play – Ryan Getzlaf/Troy Terry/Trevor Zegras/Jamie Drysdale: The Ducks, as mentioned above, have a matchup with the worst team in the league tonight on home ice. They are in a fantastic spot and should carry some ownership, especially as people pair them with Edmonton. Because the scoring can be spread out, the power play is the best way to get access to both top lines. If Sonny Milano is in the lineup and on this unit, he is a fine piece to add to the mix in place of Troy Terry. Anaheim comes in at 5th on the power play this season, up against the Coyotes who are ranked 31st on the penalty kill.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Vancouver Canucks 2 – Bo Horvat/Tanner Pearson/Nils Hoglander/Quinn Hughes: The Canucks second line matched up against the Rangers’ top line in their last home game, and we would expect them to follow the same line matching patterns. This puts them in a fantastic upside matchup against the top line for the Nashville Predators tonight. On top of that, Jusse Saros has a 3.34 GAA on the road this season in a small sample. On home ice, the Canucks have been pretty good defensively, but have had some trouble scoring, which is why they are higher risk. They have a chance tonight to break out of that scoring funk.

Chicago Blackhawks Power Play – Jonathan Toews/Patrick Kane/Alex Debrincat/Seth Jones: Feel free to replace Alex Debrincat for Ryan Carpenter in this look. Patrick Kane, since coming back from COVID, has been playing lights out, and this team got instantly better. Toews/Carpenter have been great as well, and they get to face Eric Comrie in net tonight against the Jets. This is a nice upside play that might be forgotten about with the likes of Edmonton on the slate.

Arizona Coyotes 2 – Johan Larsson/Phil Kessel/Dmitrij Jaskin: On a slate like tonight, there will be some weird things that will happen. This line has been producing chances and shooting the puck pretty nicely so far this season, at a 36.56 shots for/60, 32.34 scoring chances for/60, 11.25 high danger chances for/60, and a 2.76 expected goals for per 60 clip. This says that the chances are there, and the opportunity could be there tonight for them to pot a couple of goals. This is the definition of risk, but if you are looking to get a little different, these rates say enough to play them on a short slate. On a slate any bigger, they would not be in play.

Honorable mentions: Winnipeg Jets 1, Los Angeles Kings Power Play, New York Rangers 1, New Jersey Devils 2

Value Options – DraftKings

Center: Jonathan Toews ($3700) – Chicago Blackhawks – Tazer is a big power play component and a big piece of the Hawks’ team still. The fact that he is only $3700 is pretty surprising, even with his limited production lately. He can still shoot the puck and any points are a bonus at this point.

Wing: Arthur Kaliyev ($3400) – Los Angeles Kings – Kaliyev spends time on the top power play, and at $3400, that is enough opportunity to give him a look

Defense: Kale Clague ($3600) – Los Angeles Kings – Clague is a great punt, but he is getting a little pricier each game. He still gets power play time and is logging around 20 minutes per game, which gives him plenty of upside for his price.

Value Options – FanDuel

Center: Ryan Johansen ($4200) – Nashville Predators – Johansen has not had the production over the last couple of seasons like he had before, but as a top line, power play center, this is a good price and spot to consider if you need to go here.

Wing: Sonny Milano ($3800) – Anaheim Ducks – Sonny has a nice value to him, IF, he is on the top power play. Keep an eye on the line rushes through the day and make sure he is on that top unit.

Defense: Tyler Myers ($3600) – Vancouver Canucks – A top pair D man logging anywhere from 19-25 minutes per game, and blocking shots each game except 1? This is a great, near minimum price for this production. He may not light up the scoreboard, but down here, we don’t need him to.

Cash Considerations – DraftKings

Leon Draisaitl – C – Edmonton Oilers

Kyle Connor – W – Winnipeg Jets

Adam Fox – D – New York Rangers

John Gibson – G – Anaheim Ducks

This article focuses on 11/4 NHL Picks for both DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbooks and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We analyze tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so that we can gain an edge on the field at large. Full rankings for each position for both sites are available below.

Thursday 11/4 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for a nine-game Thursday slate!

With these larger slates, I highly advise passing on full three-man lines but instead going with pairs of two-man stacks as the goal is to attempt to capture the top scorers on the night across multiple games.

Full DraftKings and FanDuel Rankings can be found below as well as cash game considerations for each site.

Three Favorite Lines

As visible lower down, of the nine games tonight, only two have a nine total. As a result, we are likely looking at a somewhat lower scoring slate without many obvious spots to target.

Boston One “Patrice Bergeron, David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand”DraftKings or FanDuel

The “Perfection” line has not performed up to their usual standards so far this season. However, their diminished performance to date is reflected in the price discount, Bergeron in particular. Every time I look, the money line on Boston just shoots up higher and higher and the current -265 is crazy high for NHL money line standards. I don’t know if those odds are fully merited but comparatively the DFS prices are a bargain. Of course, all three skaters feature on the top power-play unit.

Toronto One “Auston Matthews, Michael Bunting, William Nylander” – DraftKings or FanDuel

Perhaps a bit chalky “I think despite being a -120 as opposed to Boston’s -250 they still get more ownership” but we have the high-end piece in Matthews, the punt piece in Bunting, and Nylander in an elevated role. If you’re not playing this line, Tampa Bay goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy has a lot of upside potential facing shot volume with potential for the win, I clearly wouldn’t play them together.

Calgary One “Elias Lindholm, Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk” – DraftKings or FanDuel

If looking for a low-owned, late-night hammer with tournament take-down potential, look no further. It was sort of hard looking around for an off-the-wall line on this slate given how some of these teams spread out their talent. The matchup is not the best but this line has been in fine form.

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  I’m Jared and I’ll be your host.  Tonight we have a solid 8 game slate where I’ll be highlighting some of my top NHL DFS plays on Fanduel and Draftkings.

Goaltending

Thomas Greiss $6.9k DK/$6.7k FD) vs. Toronto Maple Leafs – Greiss burned me last weekend when I made him my top goaltending pick, but I’m going right back to the well.  From a cost standpoint, Greiss has a great chance of returning some solid value tonight.  He’s been in the net 4 times so far this season and has reached at least 17 DK points in 3 of those outings.

He’s facing a Maple Leafs team tonight that has struggled to put the puck in the net.  They’re averaging over 34 shots per game and only scoring on average 2 goals.  Greiss should face a barrage of shots tonight and that’s what we want to see from our goalie. While there’s a good chance he lets in a few goals tonight, he also stands a great chance of getting that 35 save bonus tonight.

Spencer Knight ($7.6K DK/$8.6k FD) vs. Boston Bruins – This is strictly a DraftKings play tonight as I don’t want to pay $8.6k for Knight, let alone really any goalie.  Like Greiss, Knight is facing a Bruins that has been struggling to find the back of the net.  Of all the teams playing tonight, the Bruins have one of the worst shooting %’s to start the year.

They’re averaging 34 shots per game and only 2.5 goals.  At some point the Bruins are going to explode, I just don’t think it’s tonight.  Look for Knight and his fellow Panthers to continue to roll and get to 9-0 tonight.

Mike Smith ($7.7k DK/$8k FD) vs. Vancouver Canucks – Mike Smith is expected to return from the IR tonight and if he does, I’m a big fan of this spot.  You’ll notice a trend with my goal picks.  Pick a goalie vs. a team that shoots a lot but doesn’t score a lot.  Like the Maple Leafs and Bruins, the Canucks fit that mold.

On the year they’ve been averaging around 32 shots per game but only scoring 2.5 goals.  Any time I can try to snag a goaltender that has a realistic shot at getting the 35 save bonus on DK, I’m going to jump at it.  In Smith, we have that chance tonight as the Oilers have been giving up over 37 shots per game.  If Smith does not suit up tonight and they go with Koskinen, I’m also a fan of his.

Stacks

Edmonton 1 (McDavid/Hyman/Puljujarvi/Bouchard)

You could put any 2 scrubs on the McDavid’s line against the best defensive team in the league and I’ll still recommend his line.  In McDavid we’re witnessing the best player to the play the game since the Greztky/Lemieux era.  Sorry Penguins fans, McDavid is greater than peak Crosby and it’s not even close.

Over his last 5 games McDavid is averaging close to 3 points per game.  That’s an absurd pace and while there is always a chance that he gets a goose egg, I’m willing to take that chance.  Even at his price.  McDavid and his peers get to take on a Canucks team that has been prone to giving up some high danger chances as they’re giving up nearly 12 per game.  High danger chances equals a greater chance of giving up goals.  I love this line tonight and so should you.

St. Louis PP1 (Tarasenko/Schenn/Perron/Krug)

Vladimir Tarasenko is a must play on DK and IMO is also a free square.  I know, you must be thinking that I’m crazy for calling someone that is $6,100 a free square.  Tarasenko is on absolute fire right now and his price hasn’t even come close to catching up to his production.  He’s had 4 straight games with at least 20 DK points.  I don’t see him cooling down tonight as the Blues play arguably the worst team in the league tonight in the Blackhawks.

Of all the teams playing tonight the Blackhawks are averaging the most goals against at 4.5 goals per game to start the year.  The Blues stand a great chance to put up a big number tonight. Tarasenko will be your core here and if you want to get some savings and not play the PP1 from St. Louis, you could pair him with Robert Thomas (not the same guy from Matchbox Twenty).

Maple Leafs 1 (Matthews/Buntin/Nylander/Reilly)

If you end up fading Greiss tonight, I’d recommend using the Maple Leafs top line.  At some point the Maple Leafs are going to have their explosion and it could very well be tonight against a defensively challenged Red Wings team.  The Red Wings are giving up a ton of high danger chances so far this year.  In fact, no team on tonight’s slate is giving up more than them.  Giving up 15 high danger chances per game is going to bite you more often than not.

With the Leafs, it all starts with Auston Matthews.  While Matthews only has 2 points in his last 5 games, it hasn’t been for a lack of trying with his near 4.5 shots per game.  Over his last 5 games he has an individual corsi of 45 which leads all skaters on tonight’s slate.  He’s firing at all angles and at some point, they’ll find the back of the net.

Other stacks (Winnipeg 2, San Jose 1, Minnesota 1, Detroit 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Brent Burns – San Jose
  • Matt Dumba – Minnesota Wild
  • Seth Jones – Chicago Blackhawks
  • Oliver Ekman-Larsson – Vancouver Canucks
  • Evan Bouchard – Edmonton Oilers
  • Aaron Ekblad – Florida Panthers

Summary

We have a great slate tonight with 8 games on top.  I plan on prioritizing both McDavid and Tarasenko (DK) tonight and building their line mates around them.  If you want to game stack, the SJ/WPG game should be high scoring.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

Friday 10/29 NHL Breakdown

Hey everyone and Happy Halloween Weekend! We are now two weeks into this NHL season, and it has been a very interesting one to start. SO much news, happenings, and surprises have already happened this season. Tonight’s slate is a nice little six gamer, which is a great slate size. Not too many, not too few, which means that ownership should be spread out just enough to get different. Let’s take a look and have some fun tonight!

Goalies:

Ilya Samsonov – Washington Capitals: The Capitals have a very nice looking matchup tonight against a very bad Arizona Coyotes team who is on a traveling back to back. The Coyotes were just smacked around pretty badly by the Lightning, and now they have to face the Caps. I almost feel bad for them. Samsonov will be your chalk goalie and he should get an easy win. The shot upside should be limited, though.

Braden Holtby – Dallas Stars: The Stars get a nice matchup tonight against the Ottawa Senators, who have a tendency to be stingy, but Holtby has been playing pretty well so far. He is sporting a 0.939 SV% and a decent 2.04 GAA. The Stars should be able to handle this team, and the shot upside could be surprisingly nice.

Elvis Merzlikins – Columbus Blue Jackets: Elvis has the best numbers on the slate, sporting a 1.19 GAA and 0.952 SV%. He is on the road against the Rangers, so this is definitely a GPP pick. The shot upside will be there, and he has a chance to shut down a team that we have seen be capable of scoring.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Thomas Greiss – Detroit Red Wings: Honestly, I was torn between Greiss and Lankinen here, and I think you can do either one in this position when playing deep GPP contests. We will start with Greiss: the Panthers had a coaching transition after the Joel Quenneville mess, so there could be a bit of a transition in play style. That being said, Greiss should see shot volume and could be a potential upset spot. I like the upside in deep GPPs. For Lankinen, the Hurricanes are known for low danger shots and are on a back to back. Lank has been playing well, so I could definitely see some upside here as well. Your choice when it comes to these two, and you can let salary dictate your call.

Lines to Build Around:

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Washington Capitals 1 – Evgeny Kuznetsov/Alex Ovechkin/Tom Wilson/John Carlson: We mentioned earlier that the Coyotes are BAD. The truth is, they don’t match up well to almost every team in the league, but when you unleash one of the best teams in the league with one of the best players in the world, it is bound to be bad for them. I expect this line to be super chalky, so to get a little different, you can replace Wilson with Sheary and you will then have a power play look with access to the second line.

Dallas Stars 1 – Roope Hintz/Jason Robertson/Joe Pavelski/John Klingberg: This line had so many opportunities the last time out, when we loved them against the Golden Knights. The opportunity that they are producing and the fact that they were stifled tells me that they were unlucky in that matchup. Tonight, they have an even better matchup, and I am going to ride this line.

High Risk Lines:

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Anaheim Ducks 1 – Trevor Zegras/Adam Henrique/Rickard Rakell/Jamie Drysdale: The Ducks, and this line specifically, have a nice matchup tonight against the depth lines of the Golden Knights. I like them tonight, as Lehner has not been great, and the Golden Knights are still depleted. I can see this line going way under the radar tonight, and they have a good even strength opportunity.

Carolina Hurricanes 3 – Jordan Staal/Nino Niederreiter/Jesper Fast/Brett Pesce: At home, Carolina matches this line with the opposing top line. That opposing top line is Chicago 1, who is surrendering a big number of high danger chances per 60 (24.71) and a massive number of shots and scoring chances. Something to note: It’s a pretty small sample for the Chicago line, so that’s why this is a high risk play. However, Chicago overall is not playing great defensively, so we can roll these guys as upside plays. I have the Carolina power play under honorable mentions, and I will have some access to them as well tonight in multiple lineups, but I love the low owned upside here.

Honorable mentions: Vegas Golden Knights 1, New York Rangers 2, Detroit Red Wings 1, Carolina Hurricanes Power Play

This article focuses on 10/28 NHL Picks for both DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbooks and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We analyze tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so that we can gain an edge on the field at large. Full rankings for each position for both sites are available below.

Thursday 10/28 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for a nine-game Thursday slate!

With these larger slates, I highly advise passing on full three-man lines but instead going with pairs of two-man stacks as the goal is to attempt to capture the top scorers on the night across multiple games.

Full DraftKings and FanDuel Rankings can be found below as well as cash game considerations for each site.

Favorite Lines

I am writing this the night before, but the assumption is tonight Sidney Crosby returns. FanDuel has him priced accordingly, but there is a considerable discount on DraftKings.

As a result, we can expect him to be a staple in cash lineups and many tournament lineups if active, as anyone paying half attention will scoop him up. There is no need to be cute on a nine-game slate so I would take advantage of the misprice while it lasts.

Pittsburgh One “Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel Two Man”DraftKings

If Crosby makes his debut then I think it makes a lot of sense to roll those savings into a two-man stack that gives us the core of the Pens top line.

Winnipeg Two “Andrew Copp, Nikolaj Ehlers, Paul Stastny” – FanDuel

Winnipeg One “Kyle Connor, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Evgeny Svechnikov” – DraftKings

Given the possible returns of Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele, we will have to see if these lines change at all tomorrow. Copp is super cheap on FanDuel and that line might be sort of off the board for tournaments plus all three skaters will be on the top power-play unit assuming Wheeler/Scheifele aren’t back.

The top line isn’t expensive at all either outside of Connor. I don’t mind using them if running a few entries.
