Welcome to the Week 16 edition of The Inside Look for the 2021 NFL season.  This will be a data-driven article and will go under the hood to see if the box scores tell the whole story about what transpired during the weekend.   My goal here will be to either calm your nerves about a player that may have underperformed or cause you to rethink some of the spots you may have taken.

Outside of the MNF game, we have a pretty good sense of what transpired this past weekend.

Let’s dig into the data!

Wide Receiver Targets

Before we dig into individual player performances I wanted to take a moment to talk about why we focus so heavily on Targets.  Targets equal opportunities and fantasy opportunities more often than create production.  The more targets that a player gets the better chance there is that the player will return on value.

This weekend saw the return of two important receivers.  The first was A.J. Brown.  After missing weeks 12-15 with a chest injury Brown returned and his presence was felt immediately.  Brown led everyone this weekend with 16 targets.  He was able to catch 11 of his 16 targets for 145 yards and 1 touchdown.  The 145 yards was the third time that Brown has reached the 100 yard mark this season.

Something to keep an eye on over the last 2 weeks will be Brown’s pursuit of 1,000 yards.  Brown was able to accomplish this in each of his first 2 seasons.  Now, he’s just 240 yards shy of that mark, even though he’s missed multiple weeks.  Over the final 2 weeks, he needs to average just 120 yards to accomplish that feat for a third straight year.  Do they funnel as many passes to him as possible?  I sure hope so.

The other receiver making his return was Antonio Brown.  With a wide receiving corps decimated by injuries, the return of Brown could not have come at a better time.  With Evans and Godwin on the shelf, Brown stole the show.  Tom Brady targeted him 15 times and he was able to catch 10 of them for 101 yards.  The only thing missing from Brown’s stat-line in week 16 was a touchdown pass.  Should Evans make a return next week the production from Brown may be short-lived.  We’ll need to keep an eye on the Buc’s roster throughout the week.

Have yourself a day Tee Higgins.  Tee Higgins had by far his best game of the season.  While it seemed like everyone on the Bengals had a solid day, it was Higgins that nearly broke 200 receiving yards.  On his 13 targets, his final stat-line was 12 catches, 194 receiving yards, and 2 touchdowns.  Week 16 was very kind to the Bengals, specifically Higgins.  Up next week is a much tougher task with a hot Chiefs team.

Running Back Targets

With James Conner unable to finish the game due to injury, Chase Edmonds became more two-dimensional than he normally is.  Edmonds was targeted a season-high 9 teams and was able to catch 8 of them.  He also had a season-high 71 receiving yards.  Should Conner miss again next week and Hopkins already out, there will be plenty of targets to go around.

The Los Angeles Chargers were without their star running back this weekend, Austin Ekeler.  Justin Jackson tried his hardest to make sure that his team remained successful.  In what was a common trend among players having season-high performances, Jackson was targeted a season high 9 times.  Coming into the week he had only been targeted 5 times over the prior 5 weeks.  Jackson caught 8 of the 9 targets for 98 yards.  If Ekeler should miss next week the Chargers will be in fine hands once again.

Tight End Targets

There’s no way around it, the loss of DeAndre Hopkins has really hurt the Arizona Cardinals.  That said, there are players that are really trying their hardest to step up and make up for the lack of production.  Zach Ertz is one of those guys.  For the second consecutive week, Ertz saw double-digit targets.  Ideally, he would have done just a bit more with those targets though.  While he caught 8 of the targets, he was only able to gain 54 receiving yards.  If the Cardinals are going to get back on track they’re going to need more out of Ertz and others.

It does not matter who is throwing the ball to Mark Andrews.  Andrews just continues to pile up stats as he had his third straight game with at least 100 receiving yards.  His final line in week 16 was 10 targets, 8 catches, 125 yards, and 1 touchdown.  The Ravens season is in a freefall, but it has nothing to do with Mark Andrews.  Andrews will look to help his team right the ship next week against a very tough Rams team.

Kyle Pitts is quietly having a really solid season.  At this point, he’s just 51 yards shy of breaking 1,000 yards receiving.  In week 16 Pitts broke the hundred-yard mark for the third time in 2021.  Since their bye in week 6, Pitts has had no fewer than 5 targets and no more than 8.  His target share has been as consistent as there is.  He’ll look to continue his solid season next week against the Bills.

Quarterback Target Share

With a pair of top Packers receivers missing this week’s game, we saw Rodgers lean pretty heavily on his running backs and tight ends in the passing game.  While Adams saw 13 targets, we also saw Rodgers throw 15 passes to his non-wide receivers.  Should MVS be back next week we are sure to see a swing back to more targets to his wide receivers

I noted it above, but we’re really seeing a different game plan recently out of the Cardinals.  Without their star wide receiver in DeAndre Hopkins, they’re really having to spread the ball out more these days.  Murray threw the ball 39 times in week 16.  Of those 39, 23 went to either his backs or tight ends.  Two of his top targeted guys were Zach Ertz and Chase Edmonds.

Running Back Touches

If you ask people on Twitter, Jonathan Taylor played poorly this week.  The only thing that Taylor was missing in week 16 was a touchdown.  Taylor broke the 100 yard mark for the third straight week and made it 100 yards or more for the sixth time in the last 7 weeks.  He continues to be the workhorse of this offense and is putting up numbers worthy of being in the MVP conversation.

With a banged-up Darrell Henderson ruled out in week 16, Sony Michel was asked to pick up the load.  He delivered as he rushed 27 times this weekend for 131 yards and one touchdown.  It was the second time in the last 4 weeks that Michel produced over 100 yards.  Over the last 4 weeks, he’s now rushed for over 400 yards.  Should Henderson miss week 17 against the Ravens, the Rams will be in fine hands with Michel in the backfield.

The Texans were without 2 of their main offensive guys in week 16 with both David Johnson and Brandon Cooks out.  Rex Burkhead said not to worry as he had arguably one of the best games of his career.  His 22 carries on Sunday were by far the most he’s had all year, as were the 149 yards rushing he had.  The 2021 season has been kind to Burkhead as he’s rushed for a career-high of 356 yards.

Playbook

The ‘Playbook’ as I like to call it shows a breakdown of the play splits that teams used this past weekend.

Usually, when I get to this section we see the Buccaneers all the way on the right of the chart as they’ve thrown the ball a ton this season.  This week we saw a little bit of a different plan.  Where they normally run the ball about 30% of the time, they ran it more than 50% of the time in week 16.  With the top two receivers out for them this weekend it made sense to change things up a bit.  It worked as they had a very convincing win over the Panthers.

Conversely, with the Panthers down almost from the start, they took to the air often.  They threw the ball this weekend more than 70% of the time, with very little success.  While they threw the ball 43 times, they were only able to garner 251 yards through the air.  2021 has been a struggle for the Panthers at the quarterback position and week 16 was no different.

Inside Look Wrap Up

We saw some dominant performances this weekend.  Joe Burrow threw for over 525 yards against a decimated Ravens secondary.  That’s over 900 passing yards against the Ravens this year.  It’s like Chipper Jones-esque against the Mets.  All in all, we saw 11 different guys get over 100 yards receiving in week 16.  On the ground wasn’t much different as 8 guys had over 100 yards rushing.  This was a fantasy player’s dream this weekend with all the production.

Tonight’s Thursday night match up between the 49ers (8-6) and Titans (9-5).  The 49ers come in to this one riding a 2 game winning streak trying to solidify their playoff spot. They will be without Elijah Mitchell for a third straight game as was already ruled out.  The AFC South leading Titans look to pad their lead tonight with a win.  One of the things they have riding for them tonight is the possible return of star wideout and favorite target of Ryan Tannehill, Mr. A.J. Brown.

Let’s dig in and see if the we can find some Monkey Knight Fight games we can win.

More or Less – 3.6x Payout

Jimmy Garoppolo – 239.5 Passing Yards – More

Only the Buccaneers have given up fewer rushing yards on the year than the Tennessee Titans.  The Titans own one of the best rush defenses in the league.  Because of that, I expect the 49ers to have to pass more in this game.  In order for them to win tonight, they’ll need to have a ton of success through the air and for Garoppolo to have one of his better games of the year.  Thankfully, the Titans are nowhere near as good against QB’s as they are running backs.

They’re in the bottom 10 in terms of passing yards against.  Monkey Knife Fight is giving us a goal of 239.5 yards tonight and it’s a number that Garoppolo has hit twice in the last 3 weeks.  The passing game for the 49ers normally starts with George Kittle.  That said, I expect Garoppolo to use his wideouts a bit more tonight as the Titans are one of the best teams in the league against tight ends.

Against wide receivers?  They are one of the worst as only the Vikings have given up more yards to wide receivers.  While I do still love Kittle in this game, I’m looking for Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk to be the biggest beneficiaries of the passing game tonight.  I’m going with More side for Garoppolo tonight.

Ryan Tannehill – 205.5 Passing Yards – More

This is the side that is trickier in my opinion.  Tannehill has not been overly sharp over the past few weeks.  He’s in one of the worst stretches of his career as he’s been under 200 yards passing in 3 consecutive weeks.  The common denominator in those games is that he’s been mostly without his top two targets in A.J. Brown and Julio Jones.  While Jones is no longer the receiver he used to be when he was with the Falcons,  he’s still an imposing force that’s very capable of catching balls.

In A.J. Brown we have someone that has back-to-back seasons of 1,000 receiving yards and if it wasn’t for injures he’d easily have a third.  With both of them potentially back tonight, Tannehill will be back to having 2 of his main targets.  If they are back and healthy tonight Tannehill should be able to get over the 205-yard mark that Monkey Knife Fight has given us tonight.  As of writing this, they are expected to play so I’m going to side with the More.  Should something happen today where neither plays, Tannehill under 200 yards for a fourth straight game seems like a no-brainer and I’d go with the Less Side.

More or Less #2 – 3.6 Payout

Jeff Wilson – 64.5 Rushing Yards – Less

With Eli Mitchell out tonight Wilson will again be the top running back for the 49ers.  Last week against the 24th ranked rushing defense of the Falcons he was able to gain 110 yards rushing on 21 carries.  Tonight’s a much tougher task as he’s facing one of the best rush defenses in the Titans.  I highlighted it above when talking about Garoppolo that only the Buccaneers have given up fewer rushing yards than the Titans.

Although the 49ers will try to establish the run early to help with their passing game, I just don’t think they’ll have much success against a team that has given up 65 rushing yards to running backs just once over the past 5 weeks.  Less side for me here.

D’Onta Foreman – 54.5 Rushing Yards – More

The Titans are expected to get some big weapons back tonight with the returns of Jones and Brown.  If that does happen it actually makes me like D’Onta Foreman even more than I already do.  A more spread-out offense only helps to make it a more effective offense too.

In the last 3 weeks, Foreman has eclipsed the 100-yard mark twice.  While I don’t expect him to get quite up that number tonight, I do expect him to crush the 54.5 yards that Monkey Knife Fight has picked for us.  I’m going with More here.

Already a member, don’t forget to use our optimizer daily.

Good luck tonight and hope you cash!

Unlike weeks past, we still have 2 games to play today and 2 tomorrow.  Thanks COVID!

Let’s dig in to the data!

Wide Receiver Targets

Before we dig in to individual player performances I wanted to take a moment to talk about why we focus so heavily on Targets.  Targets equal opportunities and in fantasy opportunity more often than creates production.  The more targets that a player gets the better chance there is that the player will return on value.

If you have ask most Ravens fans, Marquise Brown had 1 less target than he should have had in Week 15.  Many camera angles show him wide open in the end zone when they went for 2.  That said, he still had a great weekend in terms of targets. No one in the NFL had more targets than Brown did this weekend.  Brown was targeted 14 times this.  It’s not all rosy picture though for Brown.

Even though he was able to catch 10 of his targets, he went for only 43 yards passing.  After getting 116 yards vs. the Vikings in week 9 Brown now has 6 consecutive weeks of less than 60 receiving yards and also hasn’t found the end zone since Week 7 vs. the Bengals.  If the Ravens have any hope of beating the Bengals next weekend they’ll need a bounce back game from Brown.

While Brown had a down week, Tyreek Hill showed the world why he is one of the most dynamic players in the game, albeit frustrating players as well.  Hill had gone 9 consecutive games without breaking the 100 yard mark.  This week he broke it with some room to spare.  Hill was able to catch 12 of his 13 week 15 targets for 148 receiving yards.  He was also able to find the end zone for the first time since week 10.  Hill and his teammates look to keep the good times rolling against the Steelers in Week 16.

Brandon Cooks, have yourself a day!  For the second consecutive week Cooks had double digit targets and over 100 yards receiving.  With opening week starter Tyrod Taylor down with an injury, Cooks and Davis Mills have really found a rhythm together and it’s been somewhat fun to watch.  The two of them also connected for 2 touchdowns this weekend.  Up next week is a much tougher assignment in the Chargers.  Can they keep connecting like they have been?

Running Back Targets

Penn State alum Saquon Barkley led all backs this weekend with 8 targets.  The good news?  He was able to catch 4 of them.  The bad news?  He did absolutely nothing with the targets as he finished with just 24 receiving yards.  There’s no other way to describe his 2021 season than saying it’s an utter disappointment.  He’ll look to get back on track next weekend vs. an Eagles team that is fighting for their playoff lives.

I’m not going to spend too much time talking about running backs and targets this weekend as running backs and targets did not mix well.  Not a single back had more than 50 yards receiving this weekend and there were only 5 receiving touchdowns for backs.  Ameer Abdullah led all running backs in receiving yards.  If that doesn’t tell you about the weekend and running backs, I don’t know what will.

Tight End Targets

Where I do want to spend some time is with Tight Ends.  I’ll start with Mark Andrews.  Week 15 was very kind to Andrews.  He led all tight ends with 13 targets.  Andrews was able to catch 10 of them for 136 yards and 2 scores.  My season long fantasy team thanks you very much.  This was Andrews second consecutive week with over 100 yards receiving and fourth overall.  Up next week for Andrews and his mates are the Cincinnati Bengals in a must win game for the Ravens.

While Andrews had a stellar week, Travis Kelce was really the one who stole the show.  Kelce finished 9 yards shy of the 200 yard mark.  He was able to convert his 13 targets into 10 catches and 2 touchdowns.  This was Kelce’s first 100 yard game since week 10 against the Raiders.  The combo of Hill and Kelce combined for well over 300 yards.  They’ll look to do it against this coming weekend against the Steelers.

We won’t go down the negative road and talk about the night that Rob Gronkowski had.  Ok, you talked me into it.  Gronk had arguably his worst game of the year, as did Brady. The only other game that comes close to his poor week 15 performance was all the way back in week 8 vs. the same New Orleans Saints.  Gronk was targeted 11 times yesterday and was only able to catch 2 of them for just 29 yards.  Gronk season long owners in the playoffs probably weren’t too happy with that yesterday.

Quarterback Target Share

Ryan Tannehill threw the ball 32 times in week 15.  Of those 32 times, more than half went to either his running backs or tight ends.  Once Julio Jones left the game yesterday, it became a much different plan of attack for Tannehill.  Tannehill now has 3 consecutive weeks with less than 200 yards passing.  With both his top receivers injured he’s struggled to find anyone else.

When you have a tight end like Mark Andrews, you use him heavily.  That’s exactly what Tyler Huntley did on Sunday.  Of the 39 pass attempts for Huntley, a third of them went to Andrews.  Another third went to Marquise Brown, although those were far less successful than Andrews’ targets. This has pretty much been the game plan all year.  Thrown to either Andrews or Brown and it has worked with much success.

If you expected the Lions to completely dominate the Cardinals in week 15 raise your hand?  I doubt anyone is raising their hand right now.  Jared Goff had his way with the Cardinals secondary yesterday.  Goff only threw the ball 26 times yesterday, but 21 of them were caught which is an extremely solid completion %.  Of his 26 attempts, 20 went to his wide receivers.  Amon-Ra St. Brown was the biggest beneficiary as he caught 8 of his 11 targets for 90 yards and a score.

Running Back Touches

At this point, Jonathan Taylor has to be considered one of the front runners for the MVP.  Week in and week out he has been a stud.  He’s reached the 100 yard mark in 8 of his last 11 games.  Taylor also has touchdowns in all but his first 3 games of the year.  The Colts are in the thick of the playoff race right now and it’s 100% due to the play of Taylor.

With the Lions top 2 running backs on the shelf this weekend, Craig Reynolds stepped up and boy did he step up.  He was second to only Taylor in week 15 with 26 carries.  He made the most of his carries as he finished with 112 yards on the ground.  In his two weeks carrying the ball Reynolds now has 195 yards on 37 carries.  Not bad for someone cut earlier in the year.

Just moments before kick off the Dolphins announced that Duke Johnson would be the starting running back.  That 100% looked like the right call in week 15 as Johnson finished with 107 yards on 22 carries and 2 touchdowns.  While Gaskin owners I’m sure weren’t overly enthusiastic about the move, it worked for the Dolphins as they beat up on the lowly Jets.  Up next week is a much tougher task in the Saints and you have to think that the Dolphins will turn to a healthy Gaskin more.

Playbook

The ‘Playbook’ as I like to call it shows a breakdown of the play splits that teams used this past weekend.

The Indianapolis Colts ran the ball almost 80% of the time in week 15.  Why not when you have the league’s most prolific back.  Of the Colts 51 plays this week, 39 were for runs compared to just 12 pass plays.  It worked for them this week as they surprisingly beat the Patriots 27-17.

Tampa Bay continued to throw often last night, even thought it just wasn’t working.  Tom Brady threw the ball 48 times and had only 26 completions.  It was just the second time all year that Brady was held without a passing touchdown.  A lot of it was due to the fact that the Buccaneers were decimated by injuries last night as they lost Fournette, Evans, and Godwin to injuries mid game.  That led to Tom Brady being shutout for the first time in 15 years.

Inside Look Wrap Up

Week 15 was as weird of a weekend as we’ve seen in quite some time, and hope to see in the near future.  Covid wreaked havoc on the schedule as we now have a 2 game slate on a Tuesday and a Monday afternoon game.  We did have some solid performances as 5 backs rushed for over 100 yards and another 5 guys had over 100 receiving yards.  We still have a healthy amount of games left with 4 still to play.

Today I’ll be highlighting some of my favorite plays on Monkey Knife Fight. Even though Covid has run rampant in the NFL, we still have an action packed Sunday with some solid plays.

More or Less  3.6x Payout

New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys

Dak Prescott vs. New York Giants (269.5 Passing Yards) – More

If you read my QB’s and Stacks article this week, you know that I love Dak Prescott this week.  He’s coming off a subpar game against Washington in which threw for only 211 yards.  Dallas should come out firing today against a Giants team that has been absolutely brutal against the pass this year.  The Giants have given up at least 270 passing yards in 4 of their last 6 games.  One of the games they didn’t was against a team that runs a run heavy offense.

Prescott faced the Giants in Week 5 and threw for 302 yards with 3 touchdowns.  I see no reason why he shouldn’t replicate that feat.  I’m siding with the More side of the 269.5 yards that Monkey Knife Fight is giving us today.

Mike Glennon vs. Dallas Cowboys (185.5 Passing Yards) – More

This one gets a little trickier as Mike Glennon just hasn’t played much.  I’m going to go w/ more game theory in this pick though because this is a game that should get out of hand pretty early.  I expect the Cowboys to get up early in this one.  Probably after their first possession.  With my expectation that the Cowboys will be up early and often in this one the Giants will have to play through the air today in an effort to catch up.

With that, Glennon should get a ton of passing volume today.  He has only 2 starts this year at QB but in both games he hit his number that Monkey Knife Fight is giving us.  The Cowboys have given up at least 200 yards in all but 2 games this season. That continues today as Glennon gets over the 200 yards mark.  I’m also going with the More side on this one.

More or Less  3x Payout

Baltimore Ravens vs. Green Bay Packers

Aaron Rodgers vs. Baltimore Ravens (265.5 Passing Yards) – More

Similar to Prescott, Aaron Rodgers is one of my favorite QB’s this week.  He’s going into a matchup against a depleted Ravens secondary.  Even with a healthy secondary, the Ravens have given up the second most passing yards on the year.  Only the Seahawks have given up more passing yards.

Rodgers is coming into this one in peak form, throwing for at least 292 yards in 4 straight games.  Monkey Knife Fight has the number set at 265.5 yards, a number that Rodgers has failed to get just twice in the last 8 weeks.  I just don’t see how he doesn’t easily get to this number today.  I’m going with the More side on this too.

Devonta Freeman vs. Green Bay Packers (52.5 Rushing Yards) – Less

This is going to be a weird week for the Baltimore Ravens.  Lamar Jackson hasn’t been ruled out just yet, but he also hasn’t practiced all week.  Should he miss this week, the Ravens game plan will be a different one than we’ve been accustomed to.  Although Huntley filled in admirably last weekend, he’s still not in the same category as Jackson.

Regardless, I just don’t see Freeman getting to the 52.5 target that Monkey Knife Fight is giving us today.  On the year it’s a number that Freeman has only gotten to twice.  Once last week against the Browns and then also in week 9 vs. the Vikings.  The Packers have one of the best run defenses in the league.  Only 6 teams have given up fewer rushing yards to running backs all year.  They should have no trouble keeping Freeman in check today.  On this one, I’m going with the Less side.

Good luck and hope you cash!

As teams in the NFL battle injuries and COVID protocols while jockeying for playoff positions and seeding, the show must go on as we head into Week 15. Be sure to keep up with the news, as teams have been experiencing decreasing player availability every day this week; there will certainly be a ton of value to be had with the number of players listed as out, but be sure to check for updates throughout the weekend. Let’s ride.

While cash games are not the most exciting contests to play, they are absolutely vital when it comes to long-term profitability in every sport, let alone NFL DFS, and allows us to ensure a stable bankroll on a weekly basis. In essence, half of your entry fees should be dedicated to cash games so that, should every one of your GPP lineups miss the pay line, you simply break even on the week. For more, please be sure to read Stix’s NFL DFS Strategy article, if you have not done so already. Some key items to remember when building your NFL cash lineups:

  • High floor: we do not need players to have a high ceiling in cash games, rather, a safe floor is what’s important.
  • High volume: volume is king in every format, but for cash games, you simply cannot afford to take a risk on wide receivers that are boom or bust with an 80-yard touchdown being needed for them to pay off.
  • Selective value plays: I try to limit my cash build to a single one since they are often the main reason for a path to failure.
  • Not a part of a stack: Stacking is great for GPPs, but if you stack in cash games, your lineup is entirely too dependent on said stacked team: if that team does poorly, your whole lineup does. This is certainly not a risk we need to take in a cash games, however, a QB/WR pairing is fine, or other two-man combinations depending on the offense.
  • Chalky (highly rostered) players: One of the key factors to being successful in cash games is rostership numbers; in GPPs, we always love pivoting to others who are rostered at a much lower number in an attempt to get different and jump to the top of the leaderboards. However, in cash games, you need to keep pace with the field and simply cross the pay line by a single spot.

Quarterbacks

Kyler Murray ($7,800 DK / $8,800 FD)

The dual-threat quarterback may be without his top target in DeAndre Hopkins until the NFL Playoffs, but Kyler Murray has the best floor/ceiling combination of anyone at the position this week. In last week’s loss to their division rival, the Los Angeles Rams, Murray posted over 22 fantasy points on DK and just under 20 on FD without scoring a single touchdown, demonstrating just how dominant he’s been this season as the top player at the position on a per-game basis. The Cardinals now face a Detroit Lions team that ranks 30th in pass defense DVOA and 32nd in yards per attempt allowed, whereby Murray leads the league with his exceptional deep ball.

Matt Stafford ($7,000 DK / $7,700 FD)

If you cannot get up to Murray on FD, Stafford is a great pivot for our cash game builds. Pacing a Sean McVay led offense is no easy task, but Stafford has been up to the challenge this season in his first with the Rams, ranking 3rd in the NFL in passing yards, 2nd in touchdowns, and 6th in air yards per attempt. In a friendly matchup versus a Seahawks secondary that is now without star safety Jamal Adams for the rest of the season, Stafford and company will do work on home soil.

*Update* SEA @ LAR has been postponed to Tuesday.

Dak Prescott ($6,500 DK / $7,500 FD)

With back-to-back subpar performances for the Cowboys offense as a unit, Dak Prescott is now priced down on both sites and I plan on taking full advantage. While he has only thrown for 449 yards and two touchdowns in his last two games, where he’s also thrown three interceptions, the Giants defense is one that he knows well and can expose. Despite ranking 10th in DVOA against the pass, the Giants surrendered a whopping 44 points to the Cowboys back in Week 5, where Dak threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns. With the NFL Playoffs right around the corner, look for one of the league’s best offenses to get back on track in a divisional game.

Honorable Mentions

  • Josh Allen ($8,100 DK / $8,700 FD)
  • Jalen Hurts ($6,600 DK / $7,800 FD) *Update* WSH @ PHI has been postponed to Tuesday.
  • Joe Burrow ($6,100 DK / $7,300 FD)

Running Backs

Saquon Barkley ($6,500 DK / $7,300 FD)

Projecting to be one of the highest rostered players on this NFL slate, Saquon Barkley will likely be a staple point in my cash builds, alongside the running back listed right below him. As I stated last week, it’s tough for me to stomach playing any New York Giant right now, not because of the lack of talent in someone like Barkley, rather, their offense is simply as inefficient as one can imagine. Now without Daniel Jones and having Mike Glennon under center, it only gets worse, if that was even possible. However, seeing double-digit carries and a combined 17 targets over the last three weeks gives Saquon a safe floor and he continues to have the highest touchdown equity of anyone on his team.

James Robinson ($5,400 DK / $6,300 FD)

With Urban Meyer now out of Jacksonville, the NFL’s chalk play of the week is none other than the undrafted bell cow out of Illinois State. While he only played 63% of the snaps last week and has a combined 14 carries in his last two games, Robinson gets a Houston Texans defensive unit that ranks 32nd in rushing defense DVOA, have allowed the most total yards on the ground, in addition to being 30th in yards per attempt.

James Connor ($6,400 DK / $8,000 FD)

If you are not playing Kyler Murray as your cash game QB, feel free to get exposure to the high-flying Cardinals offense with James Connor. Despite Chase Edmonds likely coming off the IR for their tilt versus the Lions, Connor is second in the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 14, two shy of the leader, Jonathan Taylor. Seeing double-digit carries in 10 of his last 11 games, Connor also flashed his upside in the passing game with a season-high 9-94 stat line in last week’s affair versus the Rams, and now finds himself as a near 14-point favorite versus the worst team in the league that also ranks 28th in rush defense DVOA, allowing over 135 yards per game.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Najee Harris ($7,800 DK / $8,800 FD)
  • Joe Mixon ($7,200 DK / $8,300 FD)
  • Rams RB (check for updates later this week on Darrell Henderson’s status) *Update* SEA @ LAR has been postponed to Tuesday.

Wide Receivers

Cooper Kupp ($9,000 DK / $9,000 FD)

Pacing the NFL with 151 total targets and 11.6 targets per game, Cooper Kupp is set to lead yet another NFL slate in scoring at the wide receiver position. With the Rams having lost Robert Woods for the season, they recently brought in Odell Beckham Jr. upon his release from the Cleveland Browns, but the latter is now out for this game, having being placed on the COVID list. With Kupp drawing double digit targets in every game this season other than in Week 8 versus Houston (nine targets), there is no better play at the position.

*Update* SEA @ LAR has been postponed to Tuesday.

Davante Adams ($8,900 DK / $8,500 FD)

If you are not playing Cooper Kupp on this NFL slate, then your pivot is none other than Davante Adams. With the Packers looking like a serious Super Bowl contender heading into the playoffs, the Rodgers-Adams combo looks as scary as ever, with the star wideout topping 100 yards in three straight games. Facing a Baltimore defense that remains without Marlon Humphrey, Marcus Peters, Iman Marshall, Ar’Darius Washington, DeShon Elliott, and now Chuck Clark, the only reason you’d play Adams over Kupp in cash is so the former outscores the latter, but it’s certainly enticing given the state of this Ravens secondary.

*Update* With Cooper Kupp now unavailable, I will be locking in Davante Adams.

DeVante Parker ($4,300 DK / $5,800 FD)

With Jaylen Waddle landing on the COVID list, Parker will likely be one of the highest rostered players at the WR position on this NFL slate. While most were likely expecting Tua Tagovailoa to be in the quarterback section of the cash game checkdown, he did not make the cut for me because I do not like punting QB in cash games, and I will already have exposure to the Miami Dolphins passing game with one, if not both, of Parker and/or Gesicki. Despite already commanding a 21.4% target share in the aerial attack, Waddle’s team-leading 23.6% target share leaves a lot of room for productivity for both Parker and Gesicki against this Jets secondary than ranks 32nd DVOA against passing offenses.

Honorable Mentions:

  • DK Metcalf ($6,200 DK / $6,800 FD) *Update* SEA @ LAR has been postponed to Tuesday.
  • Christian Kirk ($5,300 DK / $6,000 FD)
  • Diontae Johnson ($7,500 DK / $7,200 FD)

Tight Ends

Mike Gesicki ($5,000 DK / $6,200 FD)

I’m essentially not rostering a tight end in cash this week because Mike Gesicki is, simply put, a 6’6″ slot receiver. Running a route in the slot on 56.5% of his routes, Gesicki instantly becomes the safety blanket for Tua that Waddle was, which consistently resulted in double digit targets and 60+ yards for the rookie wide receiver out of Alabama, and is as close to a staple point in our NFL cash games as it gets.

George Kittle ($7,500 DK / $7,800 FD)

I wouldn’t have been able to get Kittle into my cash game lineups regardless with Cooper Kupp being the priority pay up option this week, but if you can get him in without two punts, do it. Kittle has the matchup we always love to pick on in the Atlanta Falcons, and despite not being on the outside versus AJ Terrell and Fabian Moreau, Kittle’s production as of late is simply outstanding, where he’s gone for 322 yards on 27 catches, including three touchdowns, in only his last two games.

Pat Freiermuth ($4,500 DK / $5,300 FD)

With a commanding red zone target share that leads the NFL since Week 6, Pat Freiermuth has become a go-to option for Ben Roethlisberger when it matters most. For the first time in six weeks, Freiermuth had below four targets in last week’s tilt versus the Vikings, but was primarily being hawked by Harrison Smith, and now it will not get any easier with Kevin Byard this week. If you can get up to Gesicki, make every effort to do so, but I would not change my enter build should it be Freiermuth over Gesicki, should you have DeVante Parker already, for example.

Defense/Special Teams

  • Arizona Cardinals ($4,000 DK / $4,800 FD)
  • Miami Dolphins ($3,700 DK / $5,000 FD)
  • San Franciso 49ers ($3,100 DK / $4,300 FD)
  • Cincinnati Bengals ($2,900 DK / $3,400 FD)

Win Daily Sports is proudly partnered with Monkey Knife Fight. MKF is offering you a FREE Win Daily Gold membership for three months ($150 value) simply for making your first deposit on Monkey Knife Fight. And if free gold isn’t attractive enough, they’re also offering a 100% match bonus up to $100 when you use promo code WINDAILY.

Tonight’s Thursday night match up should be one of the better TNF games of the year.  We have a battle between the AFC West leading Kansas City Chiefs (9-4) and the team right behind them in the standings, the Los Angeles Chargers (8-5).  A win by the Chargers tonight and the two teams are tied In the standings.  A win by the Chiefs and they open up a commanding 2 game lead with just 3 to play.  This battle tonight brings us a matchup between 2 of the best young quarterbacks in the league in Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert.

Let’s dig in and see if the we can find some Monkey Knight Fight games we can win.

More or Less – 3.6x Payout

Justin Herbert – 289.5 Passing Yards – Less

On the year Justin Herbert has been brilliant.  The 23-year old QB has thrown for over 3,800 yards and after tonight should get to the 4,000 passing yard mark.  If we take a look at the 289 yards that Monkey Knight Fight has given us tonight, he’s gotten to that number 7 times this year.  In fact, all 7 of those times he threw for over 300 yards.

With that said, Chiefs defense has been playing much better of late.  They haven’t given up more than 270 yards passing since week 5 against the Bills and were able to hold Derek Carr under 265 twice during the last 4 weeks.  Yes, the same Derek Carr that is second to only Tom Brady for passing yards this season.  With the Chiefs secondary being tough of late, I’m going to go w/ the Less on this prop.

Patrick Mahomes – 287.5 Passing Yards – More

In looking at the Chargers defense, they’ve been a little more inconsistent than the Chiefs.  Over the last 5 weeks the Chargers have given up more than 290 yards twice and both were to stand out quarterbacks in Kirk Cousins and Joe Burrow.  If we look at 2 of their better games during that 5 game stretch, they were against Teddy Bridgewater and Mike Glennon.  Not quite guys that jump out at you when you think upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks.

In a game that should be closer than any game the Chiefs have had in a number of weeks my gut tells me that the game script will call for Mahomes to throw the ball a little more than he’s had to recently.  While the 287.5 yards that Monkey Knight Fight is giving us is high tonight, I do think that Mahomes gets there tonight.  I’m siding with the More on this one.

Rapid Fire – 3x Payout

Justin Herbert vs. Patrick Mahomes (+2.5 passing yards)

I’ve highlighted in the More or Less section that I think only one of these quarterbacks hits their Monkey Knife Fight target tonight.  With that being Patrick Mahomes and both targets being very close, I’m siding with Mahomes on the Rapid Fire tonight.

Tyreek Hill vs. Keenan Allen (+5.5 receiving yards)

With both quarterbacks expected to air it out tonight, this should be a fun matchup that Monkey Knife Fight has given us between Tyreek Hill and Keenan Allen.  Both guys have been extremely solid this year.  Allen has 929 receiving yards through 12 games and Hill has 1,030 through 13.  So we know we have 2 guys that have sky’s the limit potential.  I’m going to side with Hill on this one tonight.

I don’t think there is another player in the NFL with the upside that Hill has.  His game logs in the last couple of games look rough.  But those logs have more to do w/ game script than it does with Hill.  The Chiefs were winning convincingly in both of their recent games and the need just wasn’t there for Hill.  Tonight should be a closer matchup and Hill will be more of an active participant if the Chiefs have any hope of winning.  Monkey Knife Fight is giving Allen an extra 5.5 yards tonight but I don’t’ think it will matter.  I’m siding with Hill on this one.

Good luck tonight and hope you cash!

Welcome to the Week 15 edition of The Wire Report for the 2021 NFL season.  In this article I’ll be highlighting some of the top players that should still be available in your season long leagues.

As week 15 should be the first week of the playoffs in many leagues, the waiver wires are almost bare of production players at this point. That said, there are a few out there that can help

Below are my top waiver wire targets:

Rashaad Penny – Running Back – Seattle Seahawks (8.6%  Rostered in ESPN Leagues)

What a week for Rashaad Penny.  Penny finished up week 14 with 16 carries and 137 rushing.  He also found the end zone twice.  This now makes it back to back weeks where Penny had double digit carries.  Heading into a matchup against the Rams in Week 15 Pete Carrol should start to lean on Penny even more, especially if he’s going to average more than 8.5 yards per carry like he did on Sunday.

Nico Collins – Wide Receiver – Houston Texans (1.2% Rostered in ESPN Leagues)

Was this the breakout week for Nico Collins?  Going into week 14 Collins hadn’t had more than 6 targets in any given week.  On Sunday Mills targeted him 10 times and he was able to catch 5 of them for 69 yards.  With the Texans season all but done and a week 15 matchup vs. the Jaguars, could the Texans finally give Collins a real look?  I think they do and if you need a receiver this weekend, Collins should excel in an easy matchup.

Tyler Huntley – Quarterback – Baltimore Ravens (.3% Rostered in ESPN Leagues)

This is 100% reliant on Lamar Jackson missing this weekend so you’ll need to monitor through the end of the week.  Huntley actually looked like a better QB this weekend than Jackson.  He ran better, threw better, he just doesn’t have the name recognition that Jackson has.  Should Jackson miss the week 15 matchup vs. the Packers, Huntley should be able to fill in admirably and get you multiple stats.

Devanta Parker – Wide Receiver – Miami Dolphins (50.2%  Rostered in ESPN Leagues)

With a week 15 matchup vs. the New York Jets, I want to try to grab any pieces from the Dolphins offense as I can.  Parker comes to the top of the list as he’s available in half of ESPN leagues.  In his first game since week 8 against the Bills, Parker caught all 5 targets for 62 yards.  While we would have loved to see more than just 5 targets out of him, my hope is that they wanted him to get his feet wet in his first game back and the looks will be there this week.

Ty Johnson – Running Back – New York Jets (26%  Rostered in ESPN Leagues)

Ty Johnson only had 6 carries this weekend, but he had we really coveted.  Johnson was targeted 7 times this weekend.  It was his most targets since week 10 vs. Buffalo and it was the third time this year he had at least 7 targets.  With Elijah Moore on injured reserve there are more passes to go around and Johnson was a big beneficiary of it.  Look for Johnson to play an important role in the Jets offense in Week 15.

Gabriel Davis – Wide Receiver – Buffalo Bills (2.5% Rostered in ESPN Leagues)

This is another pickup that is 100% reliant on injury news.  Should Emmanuel Sanders miss week 15 we have to love the spot for Davis.  Once Sanders went down Davis took on a bigger role in the offense.  Davis was targeted 8 times on Sunday and was able to coral 5 of them for 43 yards.  Keep an eye on Sanders status throughout the week and if he’s ruled out, Davis makes for a great pickup.

Today I’ll be highlighting one of my favorite contests on MKF, the Touchdown Dance.  This Sunday MKF is running a special contest where if you play in a $5+ Touchdown Dance contest and all 3 of your players score a touchdown you get a share of the jackpot.  Today’s jackpot is $5,000!

Let’s dig in and see if we can find sometouchdowns!

Touchdown Dance

Alvin Kamara vs. New York Jets

It’s going to the Alvin Kamara show today as he gets to take on the dreadful defense of the New York Jets.  There’s just so much going for Kamara today that I just don’t see him not getting a touchdown.  For starters, he’s been out for 4 weeks.  His legs should be at the freshest they’ve been since training camp.  Second, his back up running backs Ingram and Montgomery both tested positive for Covid this week and are extremely questionable for today’s game.  Most importantly, he’s facing a Jets defense that has been one of the absolute worst against the run all year.

Last weekend they gave up 174 yards rushing to a team that has an average at best back field.  No team has given up more rushing touchdowns this season than the Jets.  And it’s not even close.  Kamara has only 3 rushing touchdowns all year but had touchdowns in back to back games leading up to his absence.  With all indications showing that Kamara is to be fully back today I’m all in on him finding the end zone.  Confidence Level – Bet the farm

Cordarelle Patterson vs. Carolina Panthers

The Panthers have only given up 7 rushing touchdowns this season but if we look at them recently, 4 have been over the past 4 weeks.  They have shown some cracks in the armor over the past few weeks against the run and today they are facing a running back having a break out campaign at age 30 in Cordarelle Patterson.

Patterson has seen an uptick in volume the last couple of weeks and has done extremely well with it.  Over the last 2 weeks he has nearly 30 carries and has accounted for almost 190 yards on the ground.  Most importantly he’s out carrying Mike Davis in the red zone over the last 4 weeks with 5 carries to just 1 for Mike Davis.  If Patterson can carry the momentum he’s had from the last 2 weeks I like him to score at least 1 touchdown today.  Confidence Level – High

Antonio Gibson vs. Dallas Cowboys

With J.D. McKissic unlikely to play again Sunday, Antonio Gibson should get all the volume he can handle.  The third year back has been getting a ton of volume over the past few weeks.  He has carries of 24, 19, 29, and 23 over his last 4 games.  While he hasn’t quite been finding the end zone, the chances have been there for him.

Over the past 4 weeks no running back in the NFL has more Red Zone rushes than Gibson as he has 24.  While he’s only been able to convert 2 of them into rushing touchdowns, we need those chances in the Red Zone and we’re getting them from him.  With today being a big divisional matchup between the top two teams in the NFC East I expect Gibson to have a little more fire in him today.  Look for him to find the end zone early in this one in the hope that he sets the pace for his team today.  Confidence Level – Medium

Touchdown Dance Wrap Up

Other guys I also likes this week are Nick Chubb vs. Baltimore and D.J. Moore vs. Atlanta.

Good luck and hope to share the $5k with you!

Tonight’s Thursday night match up brings us to Minnesota with a matchup between a Steelers (6-5-1) team riding high off the momentum of a last second victory vs. the Ravens and a Vikings (5-7) team that may get their star running back tonight.  The season has not gone to plans for either team as the Steelers sit in third behind the Ravens and Bengals while the Vikings are riding a 2 game losing streak and are 2 games under .500.  I’m going to be highlighting some of my favorite Monkey Knife Fight plays for the night.

More or Less – 3.6x Payout

Kirk Cousins – 255.5 Passing Yards – More

Kirk Cousins should easily get to this target tonight.  Over the last 4 weeks he’s hit this number 3 times and those 3 times he hit the number pretty convincingly.  Even though one of Cousins’ top pass catchers will be out for the game, he should be able to do enough with Justin Jefferson and the likes of Osborn and Westbrook  to get over the 255 yard passing mark.

The Steelers can be a tough against QB’s but last week they showed they can still give up some passing yards as Lamar Jackson had over 250 yards passing.  If Jackson can get to this secondary, I have no doubt that Cousins can too.  I’m going with the More side of this one.

Ben Roethlisberger – 245.5 Passing Yards – More

Big Ben should get to his target as well.  Jared Goff torched this secondary for nearly 300 yards and 3 touchdowns last week.  That’s really all you need to know to get an idea where my head is at with this prop.  While Big Ben is no longer the QB he used to be, he can still sling it downfield and is still on pace to have his 13thseason with at least 3,000 yards passing.

If we look at his most recent games he’s hit this target in 3 out of the last 5 games.  In the two games that he didn’t, one was against a solid Ravens defense and the other was in a game against the Bears where he still had a 111 QB rating.  Steelers are in must win mode and in order to do that they’ll need Big Ben and Diontae Johnson to connect early and often. Like Cousins, I’m going with the More side of this one too.

Rapid Fire – 3x Payout

Kirk Cousins vs. Ben Roethlisberger (+10.5 yards)

I’ve highlighted in the More or Less section that both QB’s should hit their number tonight.  In what should be a close game tonight I’m going to go with Big Ben here.  The slight edge I’m giving to Roethlisberger is due to the Vikings secondary giving up a bit more yardage of late to QB’s and he’s also getting the extra 10.5 yards tonight.  Those extra yards are going to be key to getting him over the hump and beating out Cousins.  Big Ben for me here.

Justin Jefferson vs. Diontae Johnson (+15.5 yards)

I love Justin Jefferson, but not having his counterpart in Thielen tonight is really going to hurt him.  The Steelers should be able to throw some extra coverage on Jefferson tonight because the duo of Osborn and Westbrook are nowhere near in the same class of Thielen.

With Diontae Johnson we’re getting someone who’s on a solid stretch of football right now.  Over his last 6 games he’s had at least 80 yards receiving 5 times and has hit 100 yards in 2 of his last 3.  The one game he didn’t get to 100 he still ended up with 95 yards.  The extra 15.5 yards he’s getting tonight will be key to him outperforming Jefferson.  Diontae Johnson for the win tonight.

Good luck tonight and hope you cash!
