Zak's Puck Picks

Welcome to Zak’s Puck Picks!! I started in Cash with Flash Handicapping Challenge and have been heating up. I am super excited to keep the momentum going and win some serious money with all of you!

A big part of my life is my 3 kids. Each one of them holds a different attribute that I would personally use to aid me in deciding what picks to make. My twins Pork and Ribs and their little brother Bean (not their real names but very appropriate nicknames).

Pork is a doer. He is one to dive into a situation and figure it out as it unfolds, usually with great success. In terms of the puck pick, it will be a gut feeling pick and be backed with some stats to explain the feeling.

Ribs, he likes to observe the situation, take in all the information, and then make an educated decision on what his next step will be. His puck pick will be focused around teams that are on hot streaks, either against a team in a matchup or on a winning streak.

Now Bean may sound cute and innocent, but he is a wild man. Not a lot of thought goes into actions and if there is some thought, its geared towards “how can I push Dad’s buttons”. His puck pick will be a little more on the risky side. There will be reasons why I think we should go this way.

As cook by trade and hockey as a passion since I was 3 years old, let’s get some puck picks in the oven and make some dough shall we?

All odds are referenced from vegasinsider.com. I will play ALL the picks mentioned in these articles.

Puck Record for February (4-0) last night (4-0).

Good start to the end of January. The next 30 days (Jan 31- Feb 29) starts off strong. 3 article picks and one on Twitter all hit. Let’s keep this positivity rolling!

Pork’s Puck Pick-. Dallas -141

The Devils have been playing much better hockey as of late. Putting pucks in the net to keep themselves in games. Dallas has been playing great as of late. Their success comes from keeping pucks out of their net. 1st in the league allowing a measly 2.5 goals per game, should easily be enough for Dallas to come up with the victory. Their team defense and goaltending have been superb and will be the Devils undoing this evening.

Rib’s Puck Pick- NY Rangers -115

With both of these teams playing each other last night, and the Rangers coming up with the 4-2 victory, I see a similar narrative playing out tonight. The only difference is tonight’s game is in Detroit. The Rangers still have a better road record (10-11-1-1) than the Wings do a home record (8-16-2-0). Poor Jimmy Howard who appears to be the only starter for Detroit until Bernier comes back from injury has a dismal 2-20-2 record. Take this line early as I am sure it is only going to fade closer to -200 by game time.

Bean’s Puck Pick – Columbus + 109

Buffalo’s struggles are real. It seems as though the only player that is going well here is Jack Eichel who was the third man to reach 30 goals on the season on Thursday night. With the injury to their starting puck stopper Ullmark, I see this team struggling to score more goals than they let in. Columbus also has an injury to their starting puck stopper however Elvis Merzlikins has taken the net and played great! With his 2.39 GAA vs Hutton’s 3.24GAA, I see the Blue Jackets were able to score enough while keeping Buffalo off the board to get the win.

Games to keep an eye on Tampa v SJ, Chi v Ari,

There are a few other matchups I like, however, it depends who the puck stopper is. Stay tuned to the #nhl and # sports betting tabs on Discord, as well as Twitter for any changes or more potential matchups as more news unfolds!

Puck Record. The month of January #30dayhandicappingchalenge (49-49) article picks (22-25) (2-1 Thursday)

Won one in a shoot out, and lost one in a shootout. So close to a perfect night. Cash with Flash challenge is over. Not the 52% I was hoping for however 50% is a solid benchmark to improve upon! We’ll start a new count in February!

Pork’s Puck Pick- Lightning -167

With Tampa Bay being winners of 7 of their last 10 games and leading in about every statistical category Newsday Sports shows, it should be easy to see what you would make this pick. Anaheim does have a win under their belt in their lone meeting since the all-star break putting 4 pucks past Antti Raanta of the Arizona Coyotes. However, Andrei Vasilevskiy has started to hear his name rumbled on the Vesna conversation, a trophy given out to the league’s best puck stopper at the end of the season. The Lightning and their high-end firepower will just be too much for Anaheim to handle through 60 minutes.

Rib’s Puck Pick- Penguins -159

The Penguins are at home in this contest looking to avenge a 3-0 home loss at the hands of these Flyers back on January 21. Pittsburgh was coming off of a 4 game in 5-night stretch at that point and put in a sub-par performance, only guiding 19 pucks towards the net. This will be both teams’ first game back after the all-star break and as injury-riddled, as both teams are, they should be well-rested. I think Pittsburgh will put forth a much better effort in this game and avenge that home loss to finish off a strong January for them.

Bean’s Puck Pick – Bruins -136

The Winnipeg Jets are a struggling team right now who have lost 7 of their last 10 games. After a much-needed break, things do not get any easier with the Bruins coming to town. Worse than that, there is a good chance it appears by the news at Newsday sports, that Tuukka Rask could make his return from a concussion. The Jets are thin on the back end and are suffering a few injuries to their already thin D core. With Boston’s ability to put the puck in the net, I see this being Winnipeg’s downfall in this contest

Puck Record. The month of January #30dayhandicappingchalenge (46-46) article picks (19-22) (0-1 Wednesday 2 pending, but going to bed early)

Pork’s Puck Pick- Montreal -103

As I refuse to put any money on Buffalo anymore after that abysmal performance against Ottawa, I am more than happy to pick Montreal on this one. After a hot start. Carter Hutton hasn’t been stellar and has lost the starting net in Buffalo. He has a donut under the win column in his last 10 starts and has recorded a save percentage better than .900 3 times in that span, according to Newsday sports. It appears as though Montreal might be receiving some reinforcements in terms of goal scoring as Brenden Gallagher looks probable to return, as well as Max Domi and Artturi Lehkonen both questionable with an illness. Montreal is 1st in the league in shots per game averaging 34.88. If they continue that style of play, I see this win going in their favor.

Rib’s Puck Pick- Arizona -175

Both of these teams played last night. LA played Tampa Bay, with an emotional and fitting tribute to “the Mamba” Kobe Bryant. Arizona played Anaheim who isn’t quite at the same talent level as Tampa Bay. Arizona has won both games this season by scores of 3-0 at home and 3-2 in LA. With Arizona back at home tonight, I like them to beat LA.

Bean’s Puck Pick – Nashville -152

A triumphant win over Washington after getting badly outshot seems like a similar narrative to what might happen tonight. The Devils are coming off a 52 shot gutsy win against Ottawa, but Nashville is much better defensively than Ottawa. Full disclosure here, The Devils are who I cheer for. I also have won quite a bit of money betting against them. The stats that lead me to believe Nashville will win this game is goals per game (NSH 7th vs NJ 26th) and goals against (NSH 24th vs NJ 30th). Nashville has won 4 of the last 5 meetings.

There are a few other matchups I like, however, it depends who the puck stopper is. Stay tuned to the #nhl and # sports betting tabs on Discord, as well as Twitter for any changes or more potential matchups as more news unfolds!

Puck Record. The month of January #30dayhandicappingchalenge (46-45) article picks (19-21) (0-2 Tuesday (one game pending but I’m sick and going to bed))

Pork’s Puck Pick- Arizona -112

Arizona is just the better team here. If I had faith picking the Sharks with their trouble scoring goals and stopping the puck against Anaheim, I have more faith in Arizona. After losing his last 2 starts, I believe Antti Raanta returns to his winning ways after mending his injuries during the all-star break. John Gibson has lost 4 of his last 5 starts, although I don’t think many are blaming him. I am actually surprised this line is as high as it is. Anaheim does have a respectable 11-9-3 home record, however, with Arizona sitting in 4 in the Pacific Division, they need wins and have to beat teams they should beat. This is one of those games.

Rib’s Puck Pick- Washington-162

Nashville is struggling right now. They are a team full of talent, that just doesn’t seem to gel right. Washington is coming off a victory in Montreal. Holtby looked like he had found his Grove again and is slated to start this game. They also get their leading puck slapper back in Alexander Ovechkin, after serving his slap on the wrist for abandoning the all-star festivities. Nashville has actually won the last 8 meetings between these clubs. But I see that trend ending tonight.

Bean’s Puck Pick – Vancouver+107

Vancouver has been playing some great hockey as of late. Markstrom has been especially good puck stopping his way to 8 wins in his last 10 games. Martin Jones has done the exact opposite winning 2 of his last 10 starts. Vancouver put out a real balanced attacking effort with a 3-1 win on Monday night against the Blues, who in my opinion are a much better team than the Sharks. As I said earlier the Sharks have had trouble with goaltending and goal-scoring consistency, where Vancouver holds a 10th ranked offense and 14th in goals against per game. Vancouver is just too deep and to balanced to let this one slip

Puck Record. The month of January #30dayhandicappingchalenge (46-43) article picks (19-19) (3-1 Monday)

Pork’s Puck Pick- Buffalo Sabers -200

The Senators are coming off a shootout loss to the lowly New Jersey Devils last night. Now they are going up against a slightly better Buffalo Sabers team in Buffalo, which means they also would have had to travel in this period as well. With the better of the two puck stoppers playing last night for Ottawa, I don’t see this game staying close for very long. I would jump on this line as soon as possible, as I feel it might fall quite a bit below -200.

Rib’s Puck Pick- Calgary Flames -105

The Flames are red hot at home winning their last 4 at the Dome. St. Louis has lost their last 5 on the road and are coming off a game last night against Vancouver, which they lost 3-1. All of that information I said about puck stopper Binnington, rings true for this game as Jake Allen started last night. David Rittich looked like he returned to “Big Save Dave” in the all-star game, hopefully bringing back his confidence. Like the Vancouver game last night, I see this game being close but the Flames taking advantage of this tired Blues squad and pulling out the “W”

Bean’s Puck Pick – Puck Line Buffalo -1.5 (+125)

Puck stopper (I use that term lightly here) Craig Anderson is sporting a 6-12-0-1 record and a 3.32 GAA according to Newsday sports. The Senators have a 5-15-2-2 road record this year. As mentioned above lost to the atrocious Devils in a shootout last night. Personally I’m doing a little hedge here making sure that my Buffalo money line pick will cover this bet if for some unknown reason the Senators cover. In the last 5 starts that Anderson has, 4 of those games have been losses by 2 or more.

There are a few other matchups I like, however, it depends who the puck stopper is. Stay tuned to the #nhl and # sports betting tabs on Discord, as well as Twitter for any changes or more potential matchups as more news unfolds!

Puck Record. The month of January #30dayhandicappingchalenge (42-40) article picks (15-16) (2-0 Wednesday one pick was a gut feel added pre-game on Discord and twitter). I also put up a Liverpool ML winner on Twitter and Discord, But this is Puck Picks so that clearly doesn’t count!

Pork’s Puck Pick- Atlantic vs Metropolitan – Atlantic-125

This Atlantic team is just too talented a group not to won this game. Better goaltending with Anderson and Vasalevski. These guys up front sure know how to bury a puck as well. With the hardest shot winner Shea Weber meaning the point and names like Huberdeau, Pasternak, Marner, and Eichel upfront. I’m not sure how these guys will get beat.

Rib’s Puck Pick- Pacific vs Central- Central -110

This Pacific team is a nightmare. They have all the skill in the world, including the best player in the league right now. However, there are also the league’s two biggest rivalries on the same team. The San Jose Sharks and Vegas Golden Knights do not like each other. All that was talked about last week was the dreaded ex-coach of the Sharks came to the Knights. Not to mention the heated battle of Alberta. Draisaitl has already come out and said he won’t be on the ice at the same time as Matthew Tkachuk. Too much drama going up against the Cup Champions and crew in their own barn. Going up against the likes of McKinnon, Kane, Scheifele, Josi and Stanley Cup puck stopper Jordan Binnington. This much skill vs this much drama is a bad combination. Take the Central to the bank!

Bean’s Puck Pick – Central Division All-Star Champions

Consider this like taking the team with the home team advantage. I believe that this is the most we rounded team in the tournament as well. With 4 players all coming from St. Lois, there is a good chance they will have great chemistry and in a 3 on 3, knowing where one another is going to on the ice is a great asset

All-Star competition Edition! Disclaimer; as I usually play all the picks I write about, the all-star game is really anyone’s so I will make reference at the end of the write up about which ones I will be putting money on!

FASTEST SKATER; Connor McDavid.

Not only has this guy won this event every year he has been in it, but I also heard a reference today from Sportsnet 960’s Ryan Pinder on my way to work where he said: “This guy would get a speeding ticket in a school zone”. Even coming off of an almost year-ending knee injury, he still has the best jets in the NHL. McDavid will be the 3-time champ!

Potential upset: Nathan McKinnon.

I will be betting on this one!!

SAVE STREAK- Jacob Markstrom

This is a tough event where you always seem to have a guy come out of nowhere to take this win. I was thinking about the home town hero Jordan Binnington, but that’s too obvious. BIG SAVE DAVE Rittich? Nah, he’ll get a little goofy in this one I think. Markstrom has been a solid puck stopper in Vancouver this year and really has a shot. According to records.nhl.com, Markstrom holds the second-highest career save percentage in a shootout with a minimum of 40 shots against, within this group of goalies. The only one that is higher…

Potential upset: Andre Vasalevski– he sits second all-time on the list mentioned above where Markstrom sits 15th.

I feel good about this pick and will put a little on it

Accuracy shooting. Leon Draisaitl

You are not tied for 6th in league goal-scoring if you don’t have an accurate shot. Oh and the guy he is tied with is also the best player in the game. With an 18.8% shooting percentage and sitting second on this list. This German puck Sniper really has a solid chance to take this one home

Potential upset: Mark Scheifele

Boasting a 19.8% shooting percentage, he is the only one higher than Draisaitl on the list of the shooter. Stats gathered at foxsports.com

Will play this one small, but I like my chances

Hardest shot: John Carlson

He has won it the last three years running and currently leads the NHL with 11 goals by a defenseman. 102.8 mph was his win last year and his mark to beat this year. This guy can hammer a puck!

Potential upset: Elias Peterson!!! Only kidding. This guy weighs 120lbs after showering with his equipment on. Victor Hedman is my potential upset. Stats for D at NHL.com

I like this one too. I will probably play a unit here as well.

 Shooting stars- David Pasternak

This is a new event where the players are in the stands and try to fire pucks out onto the ice and hit certain targets. Pasternak seems like he might be good at this as he won the accuracy competition last year. The only time I have seen anyone else do this is Malkin and Crosby in a YouTube video, and of course, they aren’t in it. So why not take Mr. Accuracy.

Potential upset: Patrick Kane

Women’s 3 on 3 tournaments. – Canada

Now I try to write unbiased and follow the facts, however, as a proud Canadian, I can not possibly go against this proud nation and creator of Vulcanized Rubber (the material pucks are made of). The stats don’t follow this trend as the US has had Canada’s number in the last two tournaments. As fellow proud Canadian Allan ( Win Daily Writer of NHL Stack and Track) we just can not bet against the home team here.

Potential upset: Me, if anything other than a Team Canada Victory.

I have to put my money where my mouth is now!

As this is a once a year thing with some new events I warn you to tread lightly on these puck picks as all of these guys are really good and anything could happen, but these are my thoughts through the research I have done.

Puck Record. The month of January #30dayhandicappingchalenge (40-40) article picks (13-16) (1-2 Tuesday)Tuesday

The Brothers Puck PickColumbus -139

The Jackets have been playing some very inspired hockey these days winning 8 of their last 10 games and on a 5 game winning streak. Not to mention that Elvis is in the building and stopping pucks like they are peanut butter and banana sandwiches. This will be Winnipeg’s second game of a back to back common off of a ___ to Carolina. The Jets have been inconsistent lately and haven’t been playing well, losing 4 of their last 5. Even though Winnipeg owns a 3 and 2 record between these two, including wins in their last 3 matchups, I see Columbus’ 2nd overall GAA being the catalyst in their victory.

Puck Record. The month of January #30dayhandicappingchalenge (40-40) article picks (12-14) (2-1 Monday)

We were under 4 minutes away from being perfect yesterday, but 2 goals (one in the last 5.3 seconds of the game) robbed us of going a perfect 3 for 3. Oh well, I will take 2-1 any day!

Pork’s Puck Pick- Pittsburgh -137

The injury bug has bitten these two franchises quite extensively this season. The Penguins have managed to keep on the winning tracks with 7 victories in their last 10 games. The Flyers have been playing better of late with 3 wins in their last 5, however, I think the injury to pick stopper Carter Hart is going to hurt this team in this contest. Look for Malkin and Brian Rust to continue their point streaks as well as Crosby to continue being a force to be reckoned with.

Rib’s Puck PickChicago-112

Coming off a hard-fought victory against Minnesota, where it took 59 minutes and 54.7 seconds to determine a winner I don’t see Florida flowing on all cylinders for 60 minutes here. Puck stopping for the Blackhawks appears not to be Cory Crawford, who in his last two starts looks like the guy that took this Chicago team to the cup in 2015 with a.6-2 win over the Leafs, and a 4-1 win over the Habs. Chicago has won 3 of the last 5 between the two clubs.

Bean’s Puck Pick- Boston -173

Not much of a stretch I suppose but this should be a tight game. Boston’s 16-2-9 record is what has me most believing that the Bruins will go into the all-star break on a high. In the 5 game history between Vegas and Boston, the Bruins hold a 4-1 record. Newsday.sports.gracenote.com ranks Boston 7th in the league in pucks in goal and 3rd in the league in keeping pucks out compared to Vegas who sit 16th and 15th respectively.

Puck Record. The month of January #30dayhandicappingchalenge (37-37) article picks (9-11) (2-3 Saturday night)

Pork’s Puck Pick- Chicago Blackhawks -113

The Chicago Blackhawks have been one of the hottest teams in the league over their past 10 games. Johnathan Toews and Dominic Kubalik have formed an incredible goal-scoring tandem and Patrick Kane continues to be a menace with the puck. Winnipeg has been quite up and down losing 6 of their last 10. Even though the Jets seem to have Chicago’s number in the past. I see this hot streak continuing for the Blackhawks. Take them on the money line

Rib’s Puck Pick- New York Rangers -127

The Rangers are coming off of a home and home battle against a very similar defensive-minded team as the Blue Jackets. The results of those two games was a 6-2 victory at home and 3-2 away against the Islanders. CBJ are also on their second game in as many nights, although they walloped the Devils 5-0 and seemed to have an easy time of it, the Devils did have 41 pucks on net. With how well rookie goaltender Igor Shesterkin has looked and the fatigue of Columbus, I believe the Rangers have the edge in this one.

Bean’s Puck Pick- Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Islander: Over 5.5 goals.

For a defensive-minded group in the Islanders, they have sure been allowing a lot of goals in lately letting 6 goals in, in 2 of their last 3 starts. Thomas Greis who is projected to start tomorrow has been less than stellar in the puck stopping department as of late letting in 16 goals in his last 5 games. With the loss of Dougie Hamilton, the Hurricanes did not look great against a dismal Anaheim team, however, they have a lot of firepower on their top two lines capable of putting the puck in the net. In their last 5 home games, they have scored 16 goals. With both of these team’s ability to score goals and struggles to keep the puck out of their nets, I see this going over the 5.5 marks.
