Friday 2/18 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back for another installment of the Friday Night Forecheck here at Win Daily Sports. A nice four game slate is on tap with some interesting spots, and one game that should be fun to watch. It’s a tougher slate that you would think for four games, but we will do our best to narrow down how to attack it. Good luck!

Goalies

Jake Oettinger – Dallas Stars: The Stars travel to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks, who played Thursday night. The back to back situation, and, well, the fact that it is Chicago, puts Jake in a good spot, despite having a road matchup. Frankly, this feels like the only ‘safe’ goalie on the slate tonight, but you can also consider Frederik Andersen or Juuse Saros in this spot if you don’t want to put all of your eggs in the Oettinger basket.

GPP Goalie Pick – Laurent Brossoit – Vegas Golden Knights: With Lehner on the shelf, potentially long term, Brossoit has a legitimate chance to make a name for himself in Vegas. He is arguably a slightly better goalie than Lehner and could really benefit from a stretch of good hockey. In a home matchup against the Kings, he should be able to put a decent game together. He is a risk, however, simply because he has an ability to just blow up and not save anything.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Florida Panthers Power Play – Aleksander Barkov/Anthony Duclair/Sam Reinhart/Jonathan Huberdeau/Aaron Ekblad: It is very hard to argue with the way the Panthers have been playing this year, especially over the last month or so. They have been finding scoring everywhere and have become an offensive powerhouse. Tonight, they head to Minnesota for a date with the Wild in what should be a fun game to watch. The priority in the PP unit is usually Barkov/Huberdeau/Ekblad, but feel free to mix and match as your build allows.

Dallas Stars 1 – Roope Hintz/Jason Robertson/Joe Pavelski/John Klingberg: The Stars head to Chicago tonight to take on a Blackhawks team that is playing the second game of a back to back, and they get a matchup against Fleury, who has been less than stellar all season. If Klingberg can’t go, then Heiskanen can be played in his spot. This top line for the Stars should have its way with the Hawks and make great core pieces in any lineup.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Nashville Predators 2 – Ryan Johansen/Luke Kunin/Eeli Tolvanen/Mattias Ekholm: The Preds’ second line is in a very interesting spot tonight. The Canes match the Staal line to the opposing top line, the top line to the second, and the second to the third. That matching scheme sets this line up for a date with the top Canes’ line in a very nice matchup. This line is not necessarily known for its scoring, but they have a chance to be a super low owned, sneaky upside play.

Chicago Blackhawks 2 – Kirby Dach/Mackenzie Entwistle/Alex Debrincat: The even strength matchup for this line should be against the second line for the Stars, which is a nice matchup that should provide plenty of opportunity. This is a sneaky play that carries more risk than usual, setting this play up as a deep GPP look only. Of course, don’t play this line in the same lineup where you have Oettinger as your goalie.

Minnesota Wild 1 – Ryan Hartman/Mats Zuccarello/Kirill Kaprizov/Jared Spurgeon: the MIN/FLA game should be the most exciting game on the night, showcasing Kirill the Thrill and some other Young Guns against a slightly more seasoned, but very exciting Florida team. Because this game should be high event, it is recommended to get at least a piece of it in your lineup. These guys have a nice matchup, even though FLA gets the slight edge in this game. If playing multiple lineups, be sure to get both sides of this game.

Vegas Golden Knights 2 – William Karlsson/Jonathan Marchessault/Reilly Smith/Alex Pietrangelo: Everyone is rightfully excited about Jack Eichel finally suiting up for the Knights. He is going to make a great fit out there and really make the Knights a tough team. However, this second line should still be strongly considered as the better line until Eichel can skate with Stone and Patches consistently. Against the Kings, this line should see a mix of both top lines, spending just a touch more time against the second line. This matchup is very nice for the second line for Vegas tonight. Keep in mind, it is also a very nice matchup for LAK2 here, so you can go either way in this game.

Friday 2/11 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back for another installment of the Friday Night Forecheck here at Win Daily Sports. Tonight, we get a four game slate that starts at 8:30pm Eastern. This one looks a little ugly at first glance, but let’s see where we can go with it. Good luck!

Goalies

John Gibson – Anaheim Ducks: The Ducks host the Kraken tonight, in what should be a win for them. The Kraken have been struggling to score on the road, converting just 6.2% of their shots over their last five road games. Gibson is a solid goaltender, especially on home ice, and he should be a top point per dollar play tonight.

Brian Elliott – Tampa Bay Lightning: The Lightning are on a traveling back to back, and Vasilevskiy played last night, so the assumption is that Elliott will likely get the start tonight. Should Vasilevskiy get the start again tonight, he is an even better play. Elliott does carry some risk, since he doesn’t play all that much, but it’s the Coyotes, who have played a good bit recently, so this is feels like a safe play.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Stuart Skinner – Edmonton Oilers: The Oilers….wow. What happened to this team? They were absolutely dominating in the first part of the season. Fast forward to February, and they fired their head coach. What a free-fall they have been on. We have to be careful with the Oilers tonight because new coach = most likely new approach, new lines, and new matching schemes, and even growing pains as the team adapts. Anyway, Skinner has been a bit up and down, but arguably the better goalie for the Oilers, especially recently. In a home matchup, against the visiting Islanders, this should be a decent play that carries some risk and upside. On the other side of this game, Ilya Sorokin (Islanders) can also be considered for a risky GPP upside play.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Tampa Bay Lightning Power Play – Brayden Point/Alex Killorn/Steven Stamkos/Nikita Kucherov/Victor Hedman: The Lightning are far and away the best play on the board tonight. Even though they played last night, they are a far superior team to the Coyotes. On top of that, the Coyotes have played quite a bit over the last few days, so the Lightning should be able to skate through them all night long. Tired or not, the Coyotes don’t pose much of a defensive threat, and their 31st ranked penalty kill should be no match for this unit.

Dallas Stars 1 – Roope Hintz/Jason Robertson/Joe Pavelski/John Klingberg: The Stars host the Jets tonight, and Dallas is a much better team on home ice. Hellebuyck has been struggling of late, posting a 3.06 GAA over his last five games, which is second highest on the slate behind Vejmelka for Arizona. This line is the primary scoring line for the Stars and should be able to shine at home tonight.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Anaheim Ducks Power Play – Ryan Gezlaf/Trevor Zegras/Rickard Rakell/Maxime Comtois/Jamie Drysdale: The Ducks’ 7th ranked power play unit will take on the Kraken’s 25th ranked penalty killing unit tonight. Since the Kraken are fairly disciplined, this play is not so much about the power play matchup as it is about getting access to the top two lines for the Ducks. Anaheim tends to match the Lundestrom line to the opposing top line, which will open up the matchups for the top two lines against the depth of the Kraken. Playing the power play unit gets you a mix of top and second line guys who are all in good spots. This game feels like it hits the under, which is why they are high risk, but the Ducks carry some nice upside tonight.

Winnipeg Jets 2 – Andrew Copp/Kyle Connor/Cole Perfetti: This second line for the Jets has a nice matchup tonight against the second/third line for the Stars. It feels like this game is going to be the key to the slate, so getting either Winnipeg and/or Dallas right could be the path to success. Josh Morrissey is a good defenseman to correlate with this line.

Edmonton Oilers 2 – Leon Draisaitl/Ryan McLeod/Zack Kassian: As mentioned above, the Oilers are going through a lot of changes, which is why this line is a high risk line tonight. They used to loosely match this line against the opposing second, but we don’t know if that will continue. If they do, this is a good spot for the Draisaitl line, who has been much better of late than the McDavid line.

Friday 1/28 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back for another installment of the Friday Night Forecheck here at Win Daily Sports! Tonight, we get a nice five game slate. It’s not too big, and not too small, and at first glance looks like a pretty good one. Good luck!

Goalies

Pavel Francouz – Colorado Avalanche: The Avs head to Chicago tonight to face the Blackhawks in a game they should pretty much dominate. They have a massive implied team total and should be able to handle the Hawks. The issue is limited upside here, so he may not be the optimal for GPPs tonight.

Braden Holtby – Dallas Stars: Dallas hosts the Washington Capitals tonight, and Holtby appears to be getting the start against his old team. This is a great spot for Holtby, as the Stars are a better team at home. There should definitely be some shot upside here, and the potential for a win is very real.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Cam Talbot – Minnesota Wild: The Wild head to the Big Apple tonight to take on the Rangers, who just played last night in Columbus. While the Rangers have been better on home ice of late, they could be due for a letdown, and Talbot could very well go in and steal a game from them tonight. NARRATIVE ALERT!! Talbot was the backup to Henrik Lundqvist for two years, and the Rangers are retiring Hank’s number tonight. Marc-Andre Fleury is a consideration for a VERY RISKY GPP ONLY play, against the Avalanche tonight, who could possibly be without their star center in MacKinnon. Even without him, this is a very risky play, but it makes sense given the shot upside and the fact that MAF loves showing up in weird, unlikely spots.

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Boston Bruins Power Play – Patrice Bergeron/David Pastrnak/Brad Marchand/Taylor Hall/Charlie McAvoy: The Bruins head to the desert tonight to face the lowly Coyotes and their pretty bad goalie in Scott Wedgewood. This unit is high powered, and will be facing the second worst penalty killing unit in the league tonight. It feels like a Pastrnak night, so if you want to go straight BOS2, that works in this situation as well.

Colorado Avalanche 1 – Nazem Kadri/Gabriel Landeskog/Mikko Rantanen/Cale Makar: The Avs called up a center from the AHL last night, which could indicate that Nathan MacKinnon will be out tonight, after taking a rough looking, but totally clean (THERE I SAID IT!) hit from Taylor Hall the other night. Even if Mac can’t go tonight, this is a nice play with Kadri in the top line at C. Kadri has been more than adequate replacing Mac as needed, and this line is in a great spot tonight. Make sure you keep an eye on news through the day, and if MacKinnon does go, then he goes in Kadri’s place.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Dallas Stars 1 – Roope Hintz/Jason Robertson/Joe Pavelski/Miro Heiskanen: The Stars are a much better team on home ice, and tonight they host the Capitals. This even strength matchup bodes well for the Stars, as this line should see much of the depth lines for the Caps. The Stars at home generally match the Glendening line to the opposing top line, setting up this very nice depth matchup.

Minnesota Wild 2 – Frederick Gaudreau/Matthew Boldy/Kevin Fiala/Matt Dumba: A lot of folks will be on the top Minnesota line, and for good reason. The top line looks good as well here, but this second line should be more of a focus, simply based on even strength matchup. The Wild second line should be in for some very good looks tonight, as they face mostly the second line for the Rangers.

Pittsburgh Penguins 1 – Sidney Crosby/Jake Guentzel/Bryan Rust/Kris Letang: the Penguins host the Red Wings tonight, and frankly this game could go either way. The Pens played last night, and are starting a bad goalie in Desmith. With Nedeljkovic likely starting for the Wings, expect a lot of goals tonight, giving this line an opportunity to slide under the radar with Boston and Colorado on the slate.

Detroit Red Wings 2 – Pius Suter/Tyler Bertuzzi/Robby Fabbri/Moritz Seider: The second line for the Wings has been very good recently, and tonight sets them up with a chance to continue that. The Pens loosely match their top two lines against opposing top 2 D pairings, setting this line up for plenty of chances tonight. They will likely carry little ownership, so they are a very nice target for value tonight.

Friday 1/21 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back to Win Daily Sports’ Friday Night Forecheck! Tonight, we get a big slate for a Friday, with 8 games. The goalie situation is interesting, and this should be a higher scoring slate. It feels like it might be a little tougher, but there are definitely good spots for us to look at tonight. Good luck!

Goalies

Ilya Sorokin – New York Islanders: The Islanders host the lowly Coyotes tonight, and this should be the safest pick on the board as far as goalies are concerned. If you are looking for a cash goalie, this is it, as the GPP upside is likely going to be limited.

Frederik Andersen – Carolina Hurricanes: Andersen and the Canes host the Rangers tonight, who have been pretty bad on the road recently, putting up just 2.4 goals per game over their last five road games. Andersen had a little bit of a shaky couple of games recently, but he should be due for a positive night. Shot upside should be there, as will some risk. On a slate like tonight, the targets should be goalies we trust, and Andersen is one of them.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Alex Nedeljkovic: The Red Wings are hosting the Dallas Stars tonight who are on the back end of a traveling back to back. Dallas has also only scored 1.8 goals per game over their last five road games, making this an interesting spot to look at tonight. The shot volume should be decent, and there is a very real possibility for an upside win here tonight.

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

New York Islanders Power Play – Matthew Barzal/Jean-Gabriel Pageau/Anders Lee/Oliver Wahlstrom/Noah Dobson: As mentioned above, the Isles are hosting the Coyotes tonight, and while they have shown some flashes of improvement lately, the Islanders should be able to shut them down. The Coyotes are bottom 5 when it comes to penalty killing, and they take a decent amount of penalties per game, so there should be ample opportunity for this unit to get on the board. Throw in the fact that Wedgewood should be in net for Arizona, and this is a fantastic play tonight.

Pittsburgh Penguins 1 – Sidney Crosby/Jake Guentzel/Bryan Rust/Kris Letang: The Penguins head to Columbus to face the Blue Jackets, who are giving up 4.8 goals against per game over their last five home games. On top of that, the Jackets just played an away game last night. This line should see the top line for most of the night, setting them up for possibly the best spot of the night.

Florida Panthers Power Play – Aleksander Barkov/Sam Reinhart/Jonathan Huberdeau/Anthony Duclair/Aaron Ekblad: This unit is in a fantastic spot as well, as they take on the Vancouver Canucks in Vancouver. The Canucks are starting a goalie who only has three NHL games under his belt, with a whopping 4.35 GAA in those three games back in 16-17. This unit should absolutely roll tonight, and they will be chalky. Barkov/Huberdeau/Ekblad is the trio you want from here if you only want 3.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Tampa Bay Lightning 2 – Anthony Cirell/Alex Killorn/Steven Stamkos: The Lightning head to Anaheim tonight for a matchup with the Ducks. At even strength, this line has a nice matchup, but Gibson is a solid goalie. That, plus the road matchup, is what makes them a higher risk play tonight.

Saint Louis Blues 3 – Robert Thomas/Brandon Saad/Jordan Kyrou/Justin Faulk: This line has been a fantastic value of late, and has a very nice matchup tonight against the Kraken. Seattle is looking like they will be rolling Joey Daccord in net tonight, who came over as a rookie from Ottawa in the expansion draft. His career GAA is 3.58, so STL is in a great spot tonight. Don’t ignore the power play unit for them either.

Chicago Blackhawks 2 – Jonathan Toews/Alex Debrincat/Dominik Kubalik: This is strictly a matchup based play, as this second line should see the likes of the top line for Minnesota tonight. This sets up a nice matchup that should afford them a bunch of opportunity.

Detroit Red Wings 2 – Pius Suter/Tyler Bertuzzi/Robby Fabbri/Moritz Seider: The Wings host the Stars tonight, and this second line has a really nice matchup against the second line for Dallas. Seider slots into the power play with Fabbri and Bertuzzi, so he is great for D man correlation. The Stars are on the back end of a traveling back to back, and giving up a whopping 4 goals against per game over their last five road games. This is a great low owned target tonight.

Friday 1/14 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back to Win Daily Sports’ Friday Night Forecheck! The NHL schedule continues to be pretty unbalanced, so after a giant, 11 game slate, we have a small 3 game slate tonight. This slate has a couple of very obvious spots, so expect heavy chalk. We will do what we can to find the low owned gems to get you to the top! Good luck!

Goalies

Kaapo Kahkonen – Minnesota Wild: The Wild host the Ducks tonight, and this is a nice looking play. The Ducks have only been scoring 1.4 goals per game over their last five away games, and Kahkonen has been decent over his last five. Especially if the Wild get some of their weapons back tonight (they should), this becomes a strong play.

Sergei Bobrovsky – Florida Panthers: The Panthers are hosting the Stars tonight, and the Stars are a tale of two teams. On home ice, they have been scoring almost FIVE goals per game over their last five home games. On the road, however, they have only been scoring 1.4 goals per game over their last five road games. On top of that, they are giving up 3.4 goals per game over their last 5 road games, making Bob the best play on the slate tonight.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – None: This slate feels pretty straightforward. You could realistically go with Darcy Kuemper (COL), but the upside there feels pretty limited. The Coyotes have been playing well recently, but they are a much better team at home than on the road. With the way that Arizona shoots, and the risk that Kuemper has brought this year, one or two goals could crack him pretty easily, so it feels like the Kuemper play is just too limited. Karel Vejmelka (ARI) just put up a 40+ save, 1 goal against win the other night against Toronto. While he is good for games like that every once in a while, visiting Colorado does not seem like a spot for him to do it again. Anthony Stolarz (ANH) and Jake Oettinger (DAL) are both on the road, and Stolarz is the better play there, so you can make a case for him, but the focus should really be on Kahkonen and Bob for the upside.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Colorado Avalanche Power Play – Nathan MacKinnon/Nazem Kadri/Valeri Nichushkin/Mikko Rantanen/Cale Makar: This, just…wow. This should absolutely be a smash spot for an already high octane unit that can handle just about any team in the league. The addition of Nichushkin makes this slightly more affordable. Expect this unit to be SUPER chalk tonight, for very good reason.

Florida Panthers Power Play – Aleksander Barkov/Sam Reinhart/Jonathan Huberdeau/Anthony Duclair/Aaron Ekblad: This unit is in a fantastic spot as well, as they take on the Stars on home ice. Barkov/Huberdeau/Ekblad is always a great trio to run from the Panthers, as they are almost always producing. High Risk Lines

Anaheim Ducks Power Play – Rickard Rakell/Trevor Zegras/Sonny Milano/Ryan Getzlaf/Cam Fowler: The Ducks’ power play has a very nice matchup, as they are currently ranked 5th in the league. Minnesota has been taking a bunch of penalties, so there should be ample opportunity for them tonight. They are high risk because the Ducks have been struggling to score of late, especially on the road.

Minnesota Wild 1 – Ryan Hartman/Kirill Kaprizov/Mats Zuccarello/Calen Addison: The Wild appear to be getting back their weapons from injury and COVID, so this is a great spot for them tonight. If Addison does in fact slot into the power play, he is a great value play.

Minnesota Wild 3 – Victor Rask/Kevin Fiala/Matthew Boldy: If you want to get off of a chalkier Minnesota play and still get access to them, this is a good play. Boldy has been playing well in his first few games, and this line has a decent matchup at even strength.

Colorado Avalanche 3 – Alex Newhook/JT Compher/Logan O’Connor: This third line for the Avs has been good all year, and is a little better with Aube-Kubel, but he appears to be out tonight. Even so, this is a great way to get much lower ownership on a massive total. Newhook and O’Connor are slippery and are going to be good in this league as they grow and improve. Compher slots into the second power play, so there is a good upside to playing him as well.

Honorable Mentions: ANH4, ARIPP, DAL1

Notes: This slate feels like it is going to come down to getting the MIN/ANH game correct. Getting the correct stack to go with COL/FLA will be a great approach. Another really good GPP approach is to play contrarian and fade the super obvious chalk. As we saw last night, this can work at times, and on three games, it makes sense. Just remember, fading the obvious plays is an all or nothing approach.

Friday 1/7 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back to Win Daily Sports’ Friday Night Forecheck! On this first Friday of the new year, we have a small 2 game slate. These can be fun, but they can also be heartbreaking at times! It is totally up to you how to approach this slate. You can definitely do the 2-gamer, or you can break it up and run some showdown lineups for each game. Either way, we will do our best to guide you into the right plays. Good luck!

Since this article was written prior to some important news breaking, there will be updates listed below in bold italics. As usual, it is always best to keep an eye on news all the way up until lock, as we may end up with more news breaking.

Goalies

Antti Raanta Frederik Andersen – Carolina Hurricanes: The Canes host the Flames tonight, and they are in a good spot with the Flames on the back end of a traveling back to back. In those situations, targeting the home goalie is usually a good payoff, and tonight should be no different. The Flames are definitely a little scary, but the shot upside is there and there is ample opportunity for Carolina to win. Andersen is likely to get the start tonight, and that makes this play even better, even though he could be chalky.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Jordan Binnington – St. Louis Blues: The Blues host the Capitals tonight in what should be an interesting matchup. Binnington is usually a tough pill to swallow, but the truth is, the Blues have been playing well on home ice, giving up under 2 goals against per game over their last five home games. As of 4:15pm, Ville Husso is projected to get the start for the Blues, and is also still in a good spot for GPP. He becomes a little riskier, but is worth a look if in fact he suits up over Binnington.

The Others – Dan Vladar (CGY) Jacob Markstrom and Ilya Samsonov (WSH): The reason all four goalies are listed is because, on a 2 game slate, it makes sense to just correlate your lineups with your stacks. When stacking a team, you are basically saying that they will win. This is not ALWAYS optimal, but it makes sense. Frankly, all four goalies are risky, but as mentioned above, Raanta feels the safest. Don’t be afraid to be different with these two either, though.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Carolina Hurricanes Power Play – Sebastian Aho/Vincent Trocheck/Teuvo Teravainen/Martin Necas/Tony DeAngelo: The Canes top two lines are in decent spots, which is a good time to target the power play unit. While the power play matchup is not amazing, playing this unit gets you access to scoring up and down the lineup, which is a good approach in this matchup.

St. Louis Blues 2 – Robert Thomas/Vladimir Tarasenko/Jordan Kyrou/Scott Perunovich Robert Thomas/Brayden Schenn/Jordan Kyrou/Justin Faulk: The Blues’ second line has a VERY nice matchup tonight against the Washington 2 line. These guys have been rolling, as well, so there should be decent ownership on them. Running Perunovich with them gets you access to the second power play unit, and feel free to add in Brayden Schenn as another power play piece. Tarasenko and Perunovich were added to the COVID list, so they are of course not in play. With that news, this line is still squarely in play, and even more appealing with Kyrou and Schenn alongside Thomas.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Washington Capitals 1 – Evgeny Kuznetsov/Alex Ovechkin/Tom Wilson Garnet Hathaway/John Carlson: The Caps have a nice looking matchup against the Blues and Binnington. This top line for the Caps should have a matchup with O’Reilly’s line in a plus matchup. Expect ownership to be pretty high on these guys tonight.

Carolina Hurricanes 3 – Jordan Staal/Jesperi Kotkaniemi/Martin Necas: This is a play that starts to head into risky/deep GPP territory, but this is the type of play that can take down those contests on a small slate. CAR3 should be matched up against the second line for the Flames tonight, and will still be up against Vladar, who is a backup to Markstrom and has not played in a while.

Other Deep GPP lines to Consider:

Washington 3 (Nic Dowd/Carl Hagelin/Garnet Hathaway Brett Leason) Leason was added to this line after Hathaway moved up to the top line with Backstrom out

St. Louis 3 (Ivan Barbashev/Brayden Schenn/Pavel Buchnevich) (Oskar Sundqvist/Brandon Saad/David Perron) – Line shuffling due to COVID – this one isn’t as appealing as it was with Buchnevich and Schenn, but it could work.

Calgary 3 (Dillon Dube/Andrew Mangiapane/Milan Lucic) (Sean Monahan/Dillon Dube/Andrew Mangiapane) – Line shuffled around just a touch and seems a little more appealing with Monahan in the middle.

Value Options – DraftKings

Center: Sean Monahan ($2800) – Calgary Flames – third line, but slots into the top power play

Wing: Seth Jarvis ($3100) – Carolina Hurricanes

Defense: Oliver Kylington ($3200) – Calgary Flames

Value Options – FanDuel

Center: Jordan Staal ($3700) – Carolina Hurricanes

Wing: Brandon Saad ($5100) – St. Louis Blues

Welcome back to Win Daily Sports’ Friday Night Forecheck! Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone! We hope you have a great time tonight ringing in 2022 with your friends and loved ones! Please be safe and smart tonight. Here’s wishing you and yours a very happy and healthy new year. Maybe we can ring in ’22 with some green!

A couple of notes before we get started – this slate starts at 1pm Eastern and runs throughout the day on DraftKings. On FanDuel, there is only a 2 game main slate that starts at 7pm Eastern. Because of this, plus the COVID situations, it is absolutely IMPERATIVE that you keep up with the news. The games in the afternoon will be over by the time the evening games start, so be sure to keep an eye on all of your news sources through the day.

Goalies

Laurent Brossoit – Vegas Golden Knights: The Knights face the Ducks at home tonight, and the Ducks have been terrible on the road of late, scoring just 1.8 goals per game, converting a measly 5.8% of their shots. Brossoit has been solid, but he isn’t perfect. Expect him to give up a couple, especially with the Knights dealing yet again with health issues, but he should be considered a ‘safe’ play.

Andrei Vasilevskiy – Tampa Bay Lightning: Vas should be returning from a COVID protocol stint, as the Lightning host the Rangers. The Lightning are on a back-to-back, but the game was against their neighbor, the Panthers, so the travel really should not affect them. They did, however, get absolutely smoked, so the Lightning should have something to prove tonight. The return of Vasilevskiy should be a nice boost to the club, and what’s even better is the shot volume should be there for upside.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – John Gibson – Anaheim Ducks: This pick is interesting, as the Ducks travel to Vegas to take on the Knights. The reasoning behind this pick is simple – the Knights are banged up. Outside of the second line, they should struggle to score. The worry here is that Gibson on the road is not as good as he is at home. If the Ducks can shut down that second line, then this could be a sneaky spot for a Ducks win. If he starts, he is worth a look, but if Stolarz gets the nod, then this spot becomes a lot less appealing. Consider a pivot to Igor Shesterkin as a GPP option. Mike Smith can also be considered, and carries some risk because he may not be 100% recovered from his injury.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Washington Capitals 1 – Evgeny Kuznetsov/Alex Ovechkin/Tom Wilson/John Carlson: The Caps have a FANTASTIC matchup tonight against the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings match the Larkin line to the opposing top line, and that sets this line up for a potentially huge night. The entire Caps lineup is in a good spot, so consider a power play mix n match with these guys. They should carry ownership, but it could be surprisingly limited since they are the late game on the slate.

Edmonton Oilers Power Play – Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Zach Hyman/Tyson Barrie: The Oilers head to New Jersey to take on the Devils in the afternoon game, and that is a great spot for this unit. Stacking the power play gets you access to the top two lines, who should see the depth lines for Jersey at even strength. We all know how lethal this unit can be, and today should be no different.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

New Jersey Devils 3 – Dawson Mercer/Andreas Johnsson/Janne Kuokkanen/Damon Severson: Right on the other side of the Edmonton game, we have this very intriguing matchup. This third line should take on the Draisaitl line at even strength, which sets them up very nicely. The Draisaitl line is giving up 12.78 high danger chances against per 60, while this line generates 17.26 high danger chances for per 60. Edmonton has been known to give up goals, and this line will be overlooked. From a narrative standpoint, afternoon games can get a little weird, so with Edmonton traveling East for an early game, this is a very interesting spot.

Vegas Golden Knights 2 – William Karlsson/Jonathan Marchessault/Reilly Smith/Dylan Coghlan: As mentioned earlier, the Knights are banged up. Because of this, the second line is going to have to take on the bulk of the scoring responsibility. They have a decent matchup against the Ducks, and Vegas loves playing on home ice.

Tampa Bay Lightning Power Play – Steven Stamkos/Brayden Point/Alex Killorn/Ondrej Palat/Victor Hedman: The Lightning play host to the Rangers tonight, and they should be energized with the (hopeful) return of Vasilevskiy. On top of that, losing badly to the Panthers should give them something to prove, so they could come out on fire against the Rangers. The other school of thought is that they are tired, Vas is tired and/or rusty, and they end up putting up another dud, which is exactly why they are high risk. You can definitely make a decision between the Lightning and the Rangers in this spot, but based on recent data, the Lightning edge them out a bit. Either way, this game should be high event, and it is likely that you will need some pieces from this game. Note – if Vasilevskiy does NOT go, then this spot becomes the Rangers, especially if Lagace or a different backup that isn’t Elliott gets the nod.

Center: Ross Colton ($2700) – Tampa Bay Lightning – top line value alongside Stamkos and Palat

Defense: Damon Severson ($3600) – New Jersey Devils – he has been logging heavy minutes, and at $3600, his production is plenty to pay off

Welcome back to Win Daily Sports’ Friday Night Forecheck! We have a nice 6 game slate tonight. There is a ton of news to keep up on throughout the day, as COVID has started to cause issues throughout the league. With that being said, please make sure to keep up with Twitter and in our Discord all day long for the latest news and updates. Let’s get into it! Good luck!

Goalies

Tristan Jarry – Pittsburgh Penguins: A home date against the Buffalo Sabres tonight puts Jarry in a very, very nice matchup. He should have a nice night and should be considered safe.

Anthony Stolarz – Anaheim Ducks: The Ducks are in the same position as the Penguins tonight, with a home matchup against a weak opponent in the Coyotes. Stolarz has been playing very well, and this should not be too much of a test for him.

Marc-Andre Fleury – Chicago Blackhawks: Flower has really been playing well over the last few weeks. He and the Hawks are at home tonight against basically an AHL roster for the Predators, as Nashville deals with injuries and COVID. This spot for MAF is real nice, and he may be ignored with the other two heavy favorites on the board.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Alexandar Georgiev – New York Rangers: The Rangers are slumping right now, and Vegas is hot, so this is a matchup that we are looking to catch Vegas tired a little bit. The Golden Knights played last night in Jersey, so they are on the second half of a traveling back to back. Georgiev is the only thing that has really been keeping the Rangers in games recently, so this could be a nice sneaky spot for a high upside upset. There is a good bit of risk involved in this, but the Rangers are due for positive regression at some point, and we want to catch them when that happens, not after.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Anaheim Ducks Power Play – Ryan Getzlaf/Trevor Zegras/Sonny Milano/Rickard Rakell/Jamie Drysdale: The Ducks host the lowly Arizona Coyotes tonight in what should be a very nice spot for both of the top lines. The second line is a little bit nicer looking than the first, but this unit gets you access to both of the top lines in very good spots.

Pittsburgh Penguins 2 – Jeff Carter/Jason Zucker/Danton Heinen: The truth is, Pittsburgh is in the best spot on the night, up and down the roster. They get to face Malcolm Subban in net for the Sabres tonight, and he is not a very good goalie. On home ice, the Pens have been matching the Crosby line to the depth lines and using this second line for a top line matchup (loosely). Because of that, this second line is favored a little more than the top. The Crosby line and the top power play unit are all squarely in play here.

Chicago Blackhawks Power Play – Jonathan Toews/Alex Debrincat/Patrick Kane/Brandon Hagel/Seth Jones: As mentioned above, because of the issues the Preds are facing with injury and COVID, they are rolling out an AHL/preseason type lineup tonight. That puts this unit in a good spot. The Preds are normally a decent penalty killing team, but without key pieces, they will be more vulnerable tonight, and will potentially take a few more penalties than normal.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

St. Louis Blues 2 – Ivan Barbashev/Vladimir Tarasenko/Pavel Buchnevich/Torey Krug: The Blues host the Stars tonight in a game that should be winnable for them. However, this game feels like it could be a 2-1 defensive battle with both teams canceling each other out, which is why this line is considered high risk.

Vegas Golden Knights 1 – Chandler Stephenson/Max Pacioretty/Mark Stone/Shea Theodore: The Knights have been rolling, and they come into New York tonight to face a struggling Rangers team that is now without Artemi Panarin tonight (he did not skate in the morning skate). We are going to play the hot hand tonight, and since the depth scored last night, it’s this line’s turn to do the damage. They are high risk simply because they are on the back end of a traveling back-to-back. Also, make sure you aren’t playing this line in any lineups where you are playing Georgiev.

Winnipeg Jets 2 – Pierre-Luc Dubois/Kyle Connor/Evgeny Svechnikov/Neal Pionk: This second line for the Jets looks to be lining up against the top line for the Caps tonight in a plus matchup. Something to keep in mind, though, the coach for the Jets just resigned this morning, so there may be some changes in the lines and pairings for tonight. Contrarily, the Capitals are in a good spot too, as this game could be high scoring. On the Capitals side, Alex Ovechkin and his top line are always in play, but tonight, the second line looks a little better and could be sneakier (Nicklas Backstrom/Conor Sheary/T.J. Oshie).

Friday 12/10 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back to Win Daily Sports’ Friday Night Forecheck. We have a bit of a larger slate to break down tonight, with 7 games on the slate. There is an awful lot to like about this slate, so you will want to spread out your exposure to some big pieces tonight. Good luck!

Goalies

Darcy Kuemper – Colorado Avalanche: The Avalanche are the biggest home favorites on the board tonight, in what should be a rough game for the opposing Red Wings. Kuemper has finally turned it around slightly and hasn’t been as bad as he was earlier in the season. The trends are saying play him tonight at home against the Wings. The shot upside won’t be terrible, but it’s not the best, either, so this ends up being a cash play that probably isn’t great for GPP.

Thatcher Demko – Vancouver Canucks: The Canucks have a nice matchup tonight at home against the Winnipeg Jets, who have been having trouble scoring on the road, scoring just 2 goals per game over their last five roadies. Demko has really stepped it up over the last couple of weeks, and this is a fantastic spot for him.

Igor Shesterkin – New York Rangers: Igor joined the Rangers’ morning skate this morning, indicating that it is possible he can come back tonight for a road tilt against the Sabres. CHECK THE NEWS throughout the day, and if he does play, he becomes a top option tonight. Please note, only play the Rangers goalie tonight if it is Igor – you do NOT want Georgiev. If Georgiev gets the start, you can consider Mackenzie Blackwood in this spot instead.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Tristan Jarry – Pittsburgh Penguins: Jarry has just been playing way too well to ignore him. As long as he gets the start tonight against the Caps, he is a great play, as the Pens have been limiting scoring on the road, thanks to Jarry.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Florida Panthers Power Play – Aleksander Barkov/Sam Reinhart/Sam Bennett/Jonathan Huberdeau/Aaron Ekblad: The Panthers roll into Arizona where they should absolutely destroy the Coyotes tonight. The Coyotes are a mess of an organization right now, and truthfully, there is opportunity up and down the lineup tonight for massive upside for the Panthers. This top power play unit gives you access to the top two scoring lines, and should be heavily considered for cash. The second line has a slight edge in the matchups tonight, but you can’t deny the top line here either.

Colorado Avalanche Power Play – Nathan MacKinnon/Nazem Kadri/Gabriel Landeskog/Mikko Rantanen/Cale Makar: Speaking of a team with massive opportunity tonight, the Avalanche play host to the Detroit Red Wings tonight and Thomas Greiss in net. The Red Wings on the road have given up 3.8 goals against per game over their last five road games, and the Avalanche have scored a whopping 6.2 goals per game over their last five home games. Get exposure to the top line tonight. Logan O’Connor, should he remain on the top line, becomes a fantastic value play.

Vancouver Canucks 1 – Bo Horvat/Jason Dickinson/Nils Hoglander/Tyler Myers: The Canucks, as mentioned earlier, face the Jets at home tonight, and on home ice against the Bruins, this top line hard matched the Pastrnak/Bergeron/Marchand line. We can expect them to do the same tonight, creating a very, very, very juicy matchup against the Jets’ top line. On top of that, Eric Comrie is expected to be in net for the Jets, and he has not played in a while. His numbers aren’t amazing, so this line definitely has a good chance to be very sneaky tonight. The Jets top line rates: 38.33 shots against/60, 3.36 goals against/60, 3.97 expected goals against/60, 32.95 scoring chances against/60, and 18.16 high danger chances against/60. These are inflated numbers, and the Canucks top line (without Dickinson) is generating: 40.27 shots for/60, 0.92 goals for/60, 2.92 expected goals for/60, 38.9 scoring chances for/60, and 13.73 high danger chances for/60.

Vegas Golden Knights 1 – Chandler Stephenson/Max Pacioretty/Mark Stone/Shea Theodore: The Golden Knights host the Flyers tonight, in what should be a lopsided contest. The Flyers are a team who came out of the gate looking good, but have severely plummeted into being a very bad team. They are sporting some of the worst defensive rates in the league, and the Golden Knights should have their way against them. This top line is in a very good spot tonight, in a top six matchup that provides plenty of opportunity.

Pittsburgh Penguins 1 – Sidney Crosby/Evan Rodrigues/Kasperi Kapanen/Kris Letang: The Pens and Caps is always a premier matchup, pitting Crosby vs Ovechkin, and a lot of eyes will be on this matchup tonight. Ovechkin is having a better season than Crosby, of course, as he chases history. However, the top line for the Pens is in a good spot tonight. They run risky without Jake Guentzel, but that just means you can have this line at a discount.

New York Rangers 1 – Mika Zibanejad/Chris Kreider/Kaapo Kakko/Adam Fox: The top line for the Rangers is in a really good spot tonight against Buffalo. The Rangers seem like they have been a little quiet recently, and they seem due for a multi-point, slate breaking game. This is the spot where that could happen. Always consider playing Zibanejad/Panarin/Fox as a three-man in the Rangers look as well.

Honorable mentions: VGK2, NSH1, NJDPP1, WSHPP, WPG1, PIT2, NYR3, BUF1 (if Georgiev starts)

Friday 12/3 NHL Breakdown

Happy Friday and happy December! We have a very nice little 5 game slate tonight that starts at our normal 7pm Eastern time. This one looks pretty straightforward, so let’s get right into it.

Goalies

Connor Hellebuyck – Winnipeg Jets: The Jets and Hellebuyck get a home matchup with the Devils, who in their last five road games, have only been scoring 2.6 goals per game. Hellebuyck is much better at home, as are the Jets in general, giving up under 2 goals per game in their last five home games. The Devils can be a little feisty, but tonight, the Jets should be able to handle them.

Igor Shesterkin – New York Rangers: The Rangers have a very nice matchup at home against the Sharks tonight, and while the Sharks have been playing well, Igor has been a solid goalie for the Rangers. At home, he has posted a 1.8 GAA over his last five home games.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – John Gibson – Anaheim Ducks: John Gibson at home is always a solid play, especially because they never change his price. He usually comes in on the lower end of salary, and as long as that continues to happen, he should be a goalie to play in GPP. The Flames come into town tonight after a win against LA last night, and are on the back end of a traveling back-to-back. Gibson should see shot volume, and has a real shot for a win tonight.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Edmonton Oilers Power Play – Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Zach Hyman/Tyson Barrie: It’s no secret that most nights that Edmonton is on a slate, you play them. Tonight is that and then some, as the Oilers take on the Kraken in Seattle. This unit gets to face a Kraken team that is giving up almost four goals per game on the season. Even at home, the Kraken have given up 3.6 goals against over their last five home games. This unit is high powered, and they should be dominant tonight. McDavid/Draisaitl/Barrie are the core pieces, and you can use RNH and Hyman for value if needed.

Winnipeg Jets 1 – Mark Scheifele/Kyle Connor/Blake Wheeler/Neal Pionk: The Jets have been in a little bit of a slump recently, but they have a chance to right the ship tonight as the New Jersey Devils come to town. They look to be facing Jonathan Bernier in net tonight, and while he has not been playing poorly, he has not been great either. The Jets are a much better home team than they are on the road, so tonight is a good spot for them.

Vegas Golden Knights 2 – Nicolas Roy/Jonathan Marchessault/Reilly Smith/Alex Pietrangelo: The Knights have a nice little matchup tonight, and while the top line is in a good spot, this second line looks to be in a better spot. The second line should see mostly the Arizona top line tonight, which is a very nice plus matchup. Most people will flock to Edmonton and the Vegas top line, and this line should help get some leverage in tournaments.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Arizona Coyotes 2 – Barrett Hayton/Christian Fischer/Lawson Crouse/Shayne Gostisbehere: The Coyotes are an interesting GPP play tonight against the Golden Knights. They have been playing a little better of late, but have gotten fantastic goaltending. The Knights have been giving up 4 goals against over their last five road games, and Lehner has been less than average, with a 3.99 GAA over his last five games. Arizona is a very sneaky play tonight, and with all of the eyes on Vegas and Edmonton, this could be the leverage you need. The even strength matchup tonight looks very good for this second line, as they get the Vegas top line.

New York Rangers 1 – Mika Zibanejad/Chris Kreider/Kaapo Kakko/Adam Fox: The addition of Kakko to this line makes it a little more appealing, but the focus on this line is Zibanejad/Fox. Another really good way to stack the Rangers is to add Artemi Panarin in, creating a three-man stack with Zibanejad/Panarin/Fox. They are high risk because San Jose has been pretty good on the road this season. The Rangers are scoring 3.25 goals per game on home ice this season, making them a solid play.
