The Betting Game Plan

I hate parlays. They truly are idiot’s bets. However, I do not like much else here, as no individual goal or shot odds have me drooling and most of the totals and lines seem fairly accurate. So might as well load up on two teams that should take care of business against a pair of bottom feeders.

Top DraftKings Line

Carolina One (Sebastian Aho, Nido Niederreiter, Teuvo Teravainan), recommended add on Dougie Hamilton, optional power play stack add-ons Andrei Svechnikov and Vincent Trocheck

On a ten game slate, there is no need to worry about ownership. Given the scoring odds, combined with salary, the Carolina Hurricanes top line makes a lot of sense. The Canes at -200 fall just slightly behind Las Vegas for the title of the slate’s top favorite.

Sebastian Aho is the corner stone at a $7,100 price that is a bit cheaper than his elite peers at the center position. Nido Niederreiter provides us with salary relief at $3,800. Finally, Teuvo Teravainan fills out the top line and has first unit power play correlation with Aho.

The two players alongside Aho are not what really get me excited about stacking up the Hurricanes. Dougie Hamilton has far and away the highest scoring odds of any defenseman and has full top line and power play correlation. If focusing on the power play, Andrei Svechnikov and Vincent Trocheck also make fine additions.

Top FanDuel Line

Las Vegas Two (William Karlsson, Reilly Smith, Johnathan Marchessault) Recommended Add-On Shea Theodore, Optional Power Play Add-Ons Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone

You can similarly play Carolina One on FanDuel. In fact, Dougie Hamilton is super cheap there, so you should definitely at least play him. However, for the sake of being different, let’s turn to the other big favorite on the slate. On DraftKings, I would prefer turning to the top line, given that Max Pacioretty seems a bit underpriced at $6,900.

Nevertheless, with William Karlsson only $5,200, Reilly Smith $4,900 and Johnathan Marchessault $6,300, they leave plenty of salary remaining to add Shea Theodore and a lot more.

On the verge of elimination, the Philadelphia Flyers will look to bounce back against the New York Islanders, who have been fantastic all postseason, and attempt to force a game 6. This looks to be a night in which chalk wins, but neither team facing elimination will go down easy. Take a look below to view my top 9/1 NHL DFS Rankings!

The Breakdown

Two elimination games are on the cards tonight as we see the New York Islanders up 3-1 on the Washington Capitals, and the Dallas Stars up 3-2 on the Calgary Flames. Alexander Ovechkin finally showed up in playoff form last game, as he scored two goals with the Capitals down 2-0. Calgary lost a tight one 2-1, and this series has been quite eventful with low scoring, and then high scoring games. FanDuel NHL Blue Line Power Plays – August 13 Slate Summary

Playoff hockey has not been a disappointment this week, with several tight games, two very long overtime games, and lots of great saves and goal-scoring. Our FanDuel NHL plays remain hot as well!

We’re back to a fairly all day slate of games, starting at 3 PM ET, ending after the 10:30 PM ET games concludes in Edmonton. FanDuel NHL is currently providing a Main slate covering all four games, along with a late slate, covering the last two games.

I’m likely going to play both slates, so I can keep my NHL DFS sweats going all day. But we’ll focus on building a Main slate lineup in this post.

Here’s a look at the schedule and likely starters for the day:

3 PM ET Blue Jackets – Joonas Korpisalo ($7,400) vs Lightning – Andrei Vasilevskiy ($9,000)

5:30 PM ET Blackhawks – Corey Crawford ($7,500) vs Golden Knights – Robin Lehner ($8,400)

8 PM ET Hurricanes – James Reimer ($7,200) vs Bruins – Tuukka Rask ($8,600)

10:30 PM ET Flames – Cam Talbot ($7,900) vs Stars – Ben Bishop ($8,200)

Top Goalies

If you’ve been following my fantasy hockey columns, it shouldn’t surprise you that we start with goalies. Narrowing down our goalies, is similar to figuring out who your top and bottom pitchers are in MLB DFS.

The goalies can impact your entire lineup.

Considering match-ups, overall play, and recent play, Andrei Vasilevskiy is likely the top FanDuel NHL goalie in this slate. That said, he’s also the most expensive.

Unless Vas is on the ice for another 150 minutes, like he was in his marathon win over the Blue Jackets on Tuesday, then I am uncomfortable paying up for Andrei.

Robin Lehner and the great Golden Knights defense have been tough to score on during the Return to Play hockey period.

The Hawks were only able to compile 20 shots on Tuesday, but they should eclipse that number today, and Lehner has a better shot at hitting the 30 FanDuel NHL point mark. Robin also saves you $600 compared to Vas.

But, I’m more interested in value goalies for this slate. James Reimer could be a risky play against the Bruins, but he looked outstanding against the Rangers in his only post season start. If he starts against the Bruins, he’s a great GPP consideration for goalie.

For Cash plays, Cam Talbot is sort of an under-the-radar move. Talbot looked solid on Tuesday, giving up only two goals on 26 shots and taking the win.

The Flames have been hot lately, and Cam should continue to get solid offensive support. We could eclipse over 30 points from Talbot in this game, with a shot at over 40 if he can pull off the shutout.

Top Centers, Wingers, and Defenders

Before we dive into the stacking plays, Sebastian Aho ($8,100) is one of my favorite NHL DFS centers during this post season. Aho now has at least one point in each of the four games he’s played, with three goals and six assists.

Tuukka Rask is a tough net-minder, but the Bruins defense has exposed some cracks this post-season, and Aho was able to get at least an assist and two shots on goal in the first game of this series.

Focusing on stacking, though, William Karlsson ($5,900) is one of the best plays of the slate. Crawford has been a solid goalie for the Hawks this post-season, but the Golden Knights are playing on a much higher level than most of the NHL right now.

Karlsson doesn’t project luster with fantasy hockey stats, like Aho, but he’s consistently firing shots on goal, even compiles some blocked shots points, and should be involved with more scoring this evening.

Paul Stastny ($4,400) and Mikael Backlund ($5,600) are two other centers to consider, each with solid value and in great scoring positions, considering the match-ups.

That leads us down a path toward loving the VGK 1/2 lines, and the CGY 2 line. But you could also make a case for the Flames top line, their second line just has better value and nearly as good exposure on their power play.

I’d target guys like Mark Stone ($7,200), Matthew Tkachuk ($6,200), Reilly Smith ($5,600), and Elias Lindholm ($5,400). Alex Tuch ($4,100) is also a sneaky value play in this one.

A solid pivot is to move to the TB1 combining Nikita Kucherov ($8,400) with Ondrej Palat ($5,100). Tyler Johnson ($4,300) is also a great one-off value play on their second line.

On defense, Shea Theodore ($6,100) is becoming a fantasy hockey star during this post season, and he’s worth the hefty salary. I typically don’t pay that much for a defender, but in this match-up, he’s almost a slam dunk for 20+ FanDuel NHL points.

Fortunately, Alex Martinez ($3,800) or Nate Schmidt ($4,400) are awesome value plays to stack with Theodore.

FanDuel NHL Blue Line Power Plays for August 6

Vasilevskiy and Lehner are likely the top two goalie plays in this slate. Reimer is a solid GPP option, but Talbot is our favorite overall goalie, and Cam should be in all of your cash lineups.

From there, we’re stacking the VGK 1 or 2 lines, along with either the CGY 1 or 2, or the TB1 line. There is also some decent one-off value nuggets to help afford some of the more expensive picks.

FanDuel NHL Blue Line Power Plays – August 6 Slate Summary

With no noon NHL game scheduled on Thursday, we’re effectively focused solely on the 2:30 PM ET FanDuel NHL lock, which is the Main slate only. That gives us five NHL games to pick through, but does throw in some risk related to starting goalie announcements in the evening games.

At the time of writing this post, the only goalie confirmations I’ve seen are Holtby and Elliott in the Caps and Flyers match-up at 4pm. The rest of the starters are unfortunately a guess, based on the best information we’re given before noon on Thursday.

Here’s a look at the schedule and likely starters for the day:

2:30 PM ET Canucks – Jacob Markstrom ($7,800) vs Wild – Alex Stalock ($7,500)

4 PM ET Capitals – Braden Holtby ($8,600) vs Flyers – Brian Elliott ($7,600)

6:30 PM ET Golden Knights – Marc-Andre Fleury ($8,400) vs Blues – Jordan Binnington ($8,300)

8 PM ET Maple Leafs – Frederik Andersen ($8,300) vs Blue Jackets – Joonas Korpisalo ($7,300)

10:30 PM ET Flames – David Rittich ($7,600) vs Jets – Connor Hellebuyck ($7,500)

Top Goalies

If you’ve been following my posts, and look back to Tuesday, this advice may seem redundant. But, Frederik Andersen is once again in the best position to pile up points at the goalie position.

The only concern I have is if the Blue Jackets can even get enough shots off to pile up enough saves for Frederik. But, of all of the starting goalies, Andersen, again, has the best odds of a shutout, just like we thought on Tuesday.

Speaking off, while Andersen only compiled 20 saves on Tuesday, he did in fact record a shutout win for 36 FanDuel NHL points.

Looking back to early March, Andersen has only given up two goals in his last four starts, has three 30+ saves in the last four starts, and has only given up one goal with 53 shots on goal from the Blue Jackets in this series.

He is the top man to won, regardless of format or ownership concerns.

If you want to fade the chalk, and you’re looking for a counter-intuitive GPP play at goalie, consider Brian Elliott.

It’s a risky play against a good Capitals offense, but if the Flyers defense continues to play as well as they did at the end of the season and into the Bruins match-up, Elliott could be a sneaky 30+ point play at the position, saving money for bigger plays at the skater positions.

Top Centers, Wingers, and Defenders

The top two teams to stack in this slate are the Maple Leafs top line and the Flames first and second lines. The Leafs are lead by Auston Matthews ($8,800), Mitch Marner ($7,400), and Zach Hyman ($4,700) as your value play.

From the Flames lines, I’d rather have Mikael Backlund ($5,800) over Monahan. Backlund has been more actively with the Flames scoring and provides a better overall FanDuel NHL value.

At winger, Johnny Gaudreau ($7,900), Elias Lindholm ($5,600), and Andrew Mangiapane ($4,600) are your top Flames plays.

Again, while the top Flames line is attractive, their second line holds significant value and has been just as active with scoring. So, Mangiapane is my favorite play of those three.

There are several other one-off plays we like in other games as well. Kevin Hayes ($5,500) is a sneaky counter play at center and Paul Stastny ($4,800) is another solid value play at the same position.

At winger, Travis Konecny ($6,800) and Niklaj Ehlers ($5,700) are under-priced considering their consistent production, and Jakub Vrana ($4,800) and Reilly Smith ($5,200) are tremendous value plays.

Alex Pietrangelo ($5,800) is one of my favorite NHL DFS fantasy hockey plays in this tournament. Alex was having a tremendous season, pre-COVID, but only had three shots on goal and a blocked shot to start this tournament.

Pietrangelo should provide more FanDuel NHL points in this game. Some other top plays on defense are Alexander Edler ($4,400), Neal Pionk ($4,700), and Ivan Provorov ($4,900). Tyson Barrie ($4,600) should be a good Leafs stack tie-in as well.

FanDuel NHL Blue Line Power Plays for August 6

At the goalie position, we like Andersen as our top play but Elliott could be a sneaky GPP value play as well.

For skaters, the TOR1 and CGY2 lines should provide the best fantasy hockey points in this slate. You could buy up to the CGY1 line as well, but not only does the Flames second line give you better value, their likely to have more NHL DFS points as well.

From there, you can layer in any one of the one-off plays listed above.

FanDuel NHL Blue Line Power Plays – August 4 Slate Summary

Well hockey was back over the last weekend, and I’m now a huge fan of these ‘bubble’ sport options. FanDuel NHL had some exciting slates over the weekend, and it continued into Monday.

For Tuesday, it appears FanDuel has settled on a three-slate split, to best capture the time slots. We have two games starting between noon and 2:30 PM ET for both the Early Only and All Day slates. There are a decent amount of GPP options in the Early Only slate.

The only way to capture the 4 PM ET games are with the All Day slate, but we have less attractive tournament plays there. Your best bet for most tournament and cash plays is the Main slate, with three games starting at 6:45 PM ET.

We’ll take a look at the schedule, likely starting goalies for each, provide the best options for each of these three slates, and summarize your top fantasy hockey NHL DFS plays for the day.

Here’s a look at the schedule and likely starters for the day:

Early Only/All Day Goalies

12 PM ET Panthers – Sergei Bobrovsky ($7,600) vs Islanders – Semyon Varlamov ($8,400)

2:30 PM ET Coyotes – Darcy Kuemper ($7,600) vs Predators – Pekka Rinne ($8,000)

All Day Goalies (Only)

4 PM ET Blue Jackets – Elvis Merzlikins ($7,500) vs Maple Leafs – Frederik Andersen ($8,200)

Main/All Day Slates

6:45 PM ET Flames – Cam Talbot ($8,100) vs Jets – Laurent Brossoit ($7,100)

8 PM ET Hurricanes – James Reimer ($7,300) vs Rangers Henrik Lundqvist ($7,200)

10:45 PM ET Wild – Alex Stalock ($7,600) vs Canucks Jacob Markstrom ($7,700)

Top Goalies

First of all, unfortunately my favorite NHL DFS goalie is on home ice in a winnable situation but only for the All Day slate. In order to play Frederik Andersen, I’ll likely enter a few All Day lineups.

Even when Andersen is lowing, like his one goal against loss to the Blue Jackets on Sunday, he’s still piling up over 20 FanDuel MLB points. It’s likely the Leafs, like many other heavy-weights we saw yesterday, will bounce back on Tuesday and Andersen will be a 30+ point play.

The Early Only slate is a tough spot for goalies, but Pekka Rinne should be a sneaky 30+ FanDuel NHL play. I get why the Preds started with Suros, he was fantastic before the long break.

But, while Rinne had some very difficult to watch high-scoring losses in late February and early March, he’s also produced some gems, like a one goal against win on home ice over the Blues.

The Preds are favored to bounce back in this one and it’s expected to be a tight game. Additionally, the Isles and Panthers snoozer over the weekend likely has most NHL DFS players flocking to their goalies, so we expect low-ownership of Rinne as well.

For the Main Slate, most fantasy hockey players will jump to Alex Stalock, after his shutout of the Canucks over the weekend. I think that’s a mistake we need to pounce on.

Jacob Markstrom has had three tough losses against the Wild in his last three games facing them. But, he had solid outings averaging around 30 saves per game, and earlier in the season, he dominated the wild with a one goal-against win.

With solid Canucks offense on Tuesday night, Markstrom should be a low-owned, high value, play with the opportunity for a shutout.

Top Centers, Wingers, and Defenders

I’ll try to make this as easy and succinct as possible, because there’s a lot going on with these slates throughout the day. First, I’m starting my day of with Mika Zibanejad ($8,000) and a top-line Rangers stack in my Main Slate lineups.

So with Zib, add Chris Kreider ($5,700) and Pavel Buchnevich ($5,100) for some decent mid-salary range value in your lineup. The Jets Kyle Connor ($7,000) and Hurricanes Justin Williams ($4,200) fit nicely with the Rangers stack as two one-off plays with high upside and value.

For a value center in the Main slate, consider Mikael Backlund ($5,700) manning the Flames second line. And on defense, do some sort of combination with Neal Pionk ($4,600), Tony DeAngelo ($5,500), or Alexander Edler ($4,300).

For the All Day slate, I’d including most of those players as your top options as well, but factor in Maple Leafs players like Tyson Barrie ($4,900) on defense, Mitch Marner ($7,500) at winger, and Auston Matthews ($8,500) at center.

For the Early Only slate, we’re fading the Coyotes, and focused Predators, Panthers, and Islanders.

I realize how boring the Isles and Panthers may have looked in the opening game, but Varly hasn’t been consistent this season, and the Panthers have incredible firepower with Aleksander Barkov ($7,100) at center, Jonathan Huberdeau ($7,300) and Mike Hoffman ($6,500) as wingers.

You can get some value out of the Panthers from MacKenzie Weegar ($4,000), Keith Yandle ($4,600), and/or Aaron Ekblad ($5,000).

FanDuel NHL Blue Line Power Plays for August 4

We’re looking at playing all three ‘key’ FanDuel MLB slates on Tuesday. The Early Only and Main slates have the best GPP and Cash options, but All Day is intriguing with the Maple Leafs likely bouncing back on Tuesday.

Our top three goals for each slate are Rinne, Andersen, and Markstrom in time-order. From there, I’m stacking Panthers with some Islanders, and adding some Predators. I mentioned the names above.

For the Main slate, I’m mostly focused on the Rangers top line, along with some Jets and Hurricanes with either one-off plays at winger or a two-man combination at winger and defense.

In the All Day, I’m combining all of these options, but adding in some Maples Leafs.
