Lucas Giolito

On the early slate, Gerrit Cole seems like the obviouschoice at $11,400 on DraftKings against Cincinnati. The Reds are middle of theroad in MLB in home strikeouts. Cole has 60 strikeouts in 40.1 road innings. Heis the apparent cash game play even though you will have to work in somecheaper bats to fit him into your day or full slate lineups.

Blake Snell is your gusty GPP play at 9500 at the Yankees. It’s obviously a big risk, but Snell is capable of dominating any opponent whenhe has his best stuff, and he has allowed three earned runs or less in seven ofhis last eight starts. He is not afraid of the Bronx, as last month he held theYanks to one run in six innings while striking out nine in a no-decision atYankee Stadium.

Zach Eflin (9100) is cheaper than Cole and may be just a tadsafer than Snell. He has allowed three earn runs while striking out 15 in twostarts since coming off the IL. Washington is 18th in home batting, and the lineup is less scary than the Yankees one that Snell has to face. It’seither the better pitcher in Snell vs, the slightly better matchup for Eflin. Iwould prefer Snell in a tournament but it’s close.

Chris Bassitt has to be your only choice for a second DKstarter and may be the best choice on the day slate for combination  of value at 8000 and a vulnerable opponent, ashe hosts the Orioles. Baltimore is 27th in road batting and Bassitthas allowed more than three earned runs in a game once this season. You do haveto hope for higher K numbers here, but it’s possible you could just enough witha good chance of a victory.

On the night slate, but you definitely have to considerAndrew Heaney at $8500 at Toronto. He already has a pair of 10-strikeout gamessince coming off the IL and the Blue Jays are Top 7 in the American League inhome strikeouts. The lineup looks more formidable than it did earlier in theseason but it’s still a viable matchup for Heaney, who has looked good in two ofthree turns since coming back. He should get good run support against Aaron Sanchezfor a possible victory.

Lucas Giolito (11,300) is the obvious standout and cashpitcher of the night against the Cubs. Right now, I do not care who Gioloto isfacing, he is the top pitcher on the slate when he is listed among the probables.

Zack Greinke is a GPP play at 9000, as Colorado has been thesecond-best hitting team in the Majors over the past week. You may think theyare less threatening away from Coors, but the Rox have scored five or more runsin six of their last seven road games. Their lineup is clicking regardless ofvenue.

Rich Hill (10,300) faces San Francisco at home, and theGiants are 25th in road batting. Hill has a 2.61 home ERA with 33strikeouts in 31 innings. Hill is also starting to shed concerns about length,as he has worked seven innings in two of his past three starts. He is the bestcash game play if you don’t want to spend up for Gioloto against a betterlineup.

MonkeyKnife Fight Pick of the Day

Our experts have been terrific when pinpointing Monkey Knife Fight plays in our premium chat rooms. Tonight, I will take my shot in the Over/Under in the Angels/Jays matchup, locking in Heaney for over 6.5 strikeouts, Mike Trout easily over 1.5 hits plus walks, and considering Aaron Sanchez has not gone over four Ks in five of his past six turns, I’ll take the under on 4.5 strikeouts. Get in against Sanchez now and get 100 percent bonus!

Absolutely no weather issues (again!) for today.

Upper-Tier Arms

Max Scherzer, Nationals at Padres ($11,700 FD, $12,000 DK): Scherzer comes into this matchup smoking hot, striking out 15 in eight innings of one-run ball in his last start against the Reds, although he needed 120 pitches to do so. So the Nationals gave their ace an extra day’s rest. The Padres come into this matchup striking out the most often of any MLB team against righties, at 26.8%. Though you will struggle to get the bats you want in your lineup, he has to be given cash consideration.

Lucas Giolito, White Sox at Royals ($11,400 FD, $11,200 DK): There is no doubt in my mind that Giolito can be considered an ace. On FD, he has scored at least 55 fantasy points in three consecutive starts. And taking a rain-shortened start against the Blue Jays on May 18th, he has recorded at least 52 in his last five. Coming off this amazing roll, he was named AL Pitcher of the Month for May and Player of the Week last week. Giolito has given up just five runs in 43.2 innings over his past six starts. The Royals are not the paper-cut-you-to-death team of years past that simply didn’t strike out. They are 19th in the league with their 22.4% strikeout rate against righties. Much like Mad Max above, he is worth of cash consideration though roster construction will be challenging.

Middle-Tier Arms

Jack Flaherty, Cardinals at Cubs ($8,100 FD, $9,000 DK): You get a cash game pitcher on FD with that price! Flaherty was cruising in his last start, at home against this same Cubs team, striking out eight batters while giving up four hits and two runs, until the rain came and limited his start to five innings. Speaking of the rain and other aspects of the weather, a crucial component of any game at Wrigley is the weather and today we get a wind blowing in from right at 10-20 mph with no chance of any rain. The Cubs strike out the 15th most frequently vs. righties at 23.1% and over the last seven days, they are whiffing 26.6% of the time, which is the sixth most frequent in MLB.

Jon Lester, Cardinals at Cubs ($7,700 FD, $7,400 DK): Cash worthy on both sites because of his floor, Lester is sure happy to be pitching in Wrigley. His eyes must light up when he sees he is pitching at home this season, because his splits are dramatic. In 30.2 innings at Wrigley he has only given up two home runs and has a 1.76 ERA. On the road, he has surrendered five big flies in only 29 innings pitched with a 4.97 ERA. Maybe his strikeout to walk ratio is most telling: 32 to 4 at home, 24 to 10 away.

Bargain Basement Arm

Nick Pivetta, Reds at Phillies ($7,300 FD, $8,800 DK): Well, maybe bargain basement only applies to FD in this case, but making my prelim lineups on that site, Pivetta is who I am going with. He is coming off one of the best starts of his career Sunday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, allowing three hits and striking out nine in six scoreless innings. The Reds strike out the eighth most frequently at 24.6% against righties and the 10th in the last seven days, at 24.3%. Pivetta seemed to have found himself at the Triple A level and has carried that back to the Majors.

Monkey Knife Fight Picks of the Day

Nick Pivetta over 6.5 strikeouts

I just wrote about Pivetta above, so let’s double down on him! Seriously though, in his two starts since his recall from AAA, he has struck out 15 batters in only 11 innings. If he can last six innings, he should have no problem reaching seven strikeouts.

We have a nice 13 game slate on our hands, but there aren’t many arms I can vouch for, so I’m going to give you my favorites and mention a couple that I’m looking to fade.

Lucas Giolito vs. Kansas City Royals – $9,900 on DraftKings

Lucas Giolito is finally becoming what we all believed he was supposed to be as a top prospect. In four of his last five starts he has posted seven or more strikeouts and has also gotten the win (28.5% K% on the year). Giolito is coming off his complete game shutout masterpiece (9 Ks, 1 BB) against the Astros in his last start.  Now we get a Royals team who comes to town with a decently high whiff rate (21.9%) and I think Giolito is going to dice them up. I don’t see any reason why Giolito won’t continue his dominance.

Stephen Strasburg vs. Atlanta Braves – $11,800 on DraftKings

Strasburg is coming into Atlanta with a 30.6 percent K rate (ninth-best mark in MLB) and a 27.7 percent hard-hit rate (second-best), but is also coming into the game as a slight underdog. Along with that its supposed to be 90+ degrees in Atlanta and this is not an offense or ballpark I would like to attack at this price tag. I’m leaning on the Strasburg fade which allows me to stack up some Coors bats and we will find some value on both FanDuel and DraftKings.

Trevor Richards vs. San Francisco Giants – $8,200 DraftKings

Trevor Richards is a very solid pitcher who I love playing when he’s in Miami. He shows the ability to strike out a handful every time he heads to the mound. I love his chance for a win here as I think the Marlins could get to Shark. The Giants are a dreadful offense with a 24.3% K rate and I don’t worry about anyone getting to Richards in that lineup one bit.

Martin Perez vs. Milwaukee Brewers – $9,100 on DraftKings

Martin Perez has been on a resurgence this year but this is where we are pumping the brakes. If DraftKings was kinder and provided a discount on Perez we would be more interested because on paper he looks like a great play, but this matchup says otherwise. The Brewers are not a team to attack and Vegas agrees with their 4.5 run implied total. Look to fade Perez in this matchup and revisit him in his next start.

Marco Gonzales vs. Texas Rangers – $6,900 DraftKings

Texas is terrible against left handed pitchers and I don’t see why Gonzales can’t cruise through this lineup. Gonzales is another pitcher we love playing when he is at home. Against the Rangers last time he accrued 14.7 DraftKings points in Texas, We don’t see any reason why he won’t eclipse 22 and return mega value here. The Rangers strike out at 23.6% K rate, which should help Gonzales and his 16.4% K rate.
