Kings of the KBO Hill

Jong Hoon Park (R), SK – $8,300 DK / $26 FD

While most will jockey back and forth deciding whichof Mike Wright and Aaron Brooks to start their KBO DFS lineups with, I’ll gladlytake Jong Hoon Park at a $1200 and $700 discount, respectively, on DK, and at a$3 or $1 discount on FD. Although Park isn’t the biggest name on the KBO slate, his 24.7% strikeout rate is the highest of all pitchers on the slate andcombined with his matchup versus Hanwha, he has the highest upside. Tie thatinto the fact that some may be scared because of high walk rate (9.3%) andinflated ERA (5.43), Park is exactly the high risk, high reward play I want inmy lineups tonight.

Aaron Brooks (R), KIA – $9,000 DK / $29 FD

While he won’t be my first player that I put in my KBO DFS lineups tonight, he makes a compelling case to be the second over on DK. At first glance, the matchup versus Kiwoon had me thinking I’d be passing on Brooks, but after digging into his statistics this season, he seems like the best combination of safe floor and high upside on a KBO slate that doesn’t have many elite pitchers to offer. Brooks is now 3-3 on the season with a 2.36 ERA, 2.87 FIP, 1.08 WHIP, 22.8% strikeout rate, a 5.1% walk rate, and he has surpassed 10 or more DK points in EVERY start this season, including 6 of 11 starts being against the best offenses in the league in Kiwoon, Doosan, and NC. In 2 previous starts versus KIW this season, Brooks is 0-1 with a 1.32 ERA, only allowing a single earned run in nearly 12 innings with 14 strikeouts.

Kings of the KBO Hill

Drew Rucinski (R), NCD – $9,400 DK / $29 FD

Tonight’s KBO slate is loaded with top options at various pricing points, but it begins at the very top with Drew Rucinski. Despite being in the shadow of teammate Chang Mo Koo and his spectacular campaign thus far, Rucinski has been quite dominant himself and is now 7-1 with a 2.30 ERA, 3.84 FIP, 1.11 WHIP, and a 22.7% strikeout rate. On a slate that has plenty of strikeout upside with multiple options on the mound, Rucinski’s floor is like no other – he has averaged 21.1 FPPG on the season and has hit double digits in 10 of 11 starts, while also going 6 or more innings in 10 of 11 starts, but he also offers enough upside to warrant conversation in tournament play. We’ll have to keep an eye on ownership closer to lock, but Rucinski’s going to have to bring it versus a loaded LG offense in what could be a pitcher’s duel, and I think he does just that.

Chris Flexen (R), DOO – $8,400 DK / $25 FD

While he did blow up the KBO slate in his last startat heavy ownership versus Hanwha, Flexen gets another soft matchup tonightversus Lotte and could bounce back in a big way. Even after last week’sdisaster, Flexen sits at 3-3 with a 4.18 ERA, 3.55 FIP, 1.36 WHIP, and a 21.3%strikeout rate. Rarely do you see a player with an 8k price tag be a source of “value”,but Flexen can definitely be the best pitcher on the KBO slate from a Points/$perspective.

GPP Options: Chan GyuLim (R), LG, William Cuevas (R), KT

Kings of the KBO Hill

Eric Jokisch (L), KIW – $9,500 DK / $30 FD

Tonight’s KBO slate has a lot of depth in terms of talent, but many of the big pitchers are in tough matchups. Nonetheless, Jokisch continues to be the cream of the crop in the KBO, and is now sitting at 7-2 on the season with a 1.30 ERA, 3.08 FIP, 0.87 WHIP, an 18.5% strikeout rate, 3.8% walk rate, and 0.26 HR/9. He keeps the ball in the park, having only given up 2 home runs across 11 starts, shows excellent command in finding the strike zone, and typically comes in between 90-100 pitches. He’s durable, extremely talented, and is by far the top target on tonight’s KBO slate.

Raul Alcantara (R), DOO – $9,200 DK / $28 FD

While the SP2 slot continues to be a place where wefail to deploy a second pitcher in our KBO lineups with extreme confidence, wenailed another pick yesterday in Odrisamer Despaigne and will look to keep theweekly hot streak going. Alcantara does not have the best matchup on the KBOslate facing the LG Twins, but he’s shown some elite stuff this season and isnow 7-1 with a 3.46 ERA, 3.88 FIP, 1.18 WHIP, 20.9% strikeout rate and 4.1% walkrate. He’s topped 5 or more strikeouts in four straight starts and is at home,in a pitcher’s park, where he’ll look to keep the Twins offense at bay after theyput up 8 runs on 11 hits yesterday.

Kings of the KBO Hill

Dan Straily (R), LOT – $10,000 DK / $29 FD

Gone are the days of being able to play Dan Straily in the 7k range on a KBO slate. The Lotte ace comes in at a whopping 10k price tag on DK while also being the highest-priced pitcher on FD, but he’ll be worth every dollar. Given the uncertainty surrounding almost, if not all other pitchers on the KBO slate, I’ll eat the Straily chalk and move on. He’s now 1-2 on the season with a 2.53 ERA, 3.11 FIP, 1.06 WHIP, and an impressive 26.2% strikeout rate. Facing the Eagles, Straily will surely be the highest raw point producer on the mound tonight.

Odrisamer Despaigne (R), KT – $8,100 DK / $22 FD

The SP2 slot on DK is where we have different directions available to us; we’ve hit the first two KBO slates of the week with Jong Hun Park (SK) and Shi Hwan Jang (HAN) in this slot, so we’ll look to keep it going here. While Odrisamer Despaigne’s skillset is less than impressive, he warrants consideration because of the lack of strikeout upside the other pitching options carry. He’s now 4-4 on the season with a 4.32 ERA, 4.29 FIP, 1.33 WHIP, and an 18.1% strikeout rate. While a ton of other pitchers on the KBO slate pitch for contact – yes, I’m looking at you, Saupold (HAN), Lee (NCD), and Won (SAM) – investing in Despaigne’s strikeout upside on tonight’s KBO slate could pay off in tournament play.

GPP Options: WarrickSaupold (R), HAN, Jae Hak Lee (R), NCD

Kings of the Hill

Chang Mo Koo (L), NCD – $10,800 DK / $29 FD

The best pitcher on the KBO slate needs no entrance. Chang Mo Koo has been nothing less than spectacular this season, and is now 7-0 with a 1.50 ERA, 2.43 FIP, 0.76 WHIP, and a league-leading 31.1% strikeout rate. Koo has been virtually matchup proof no matter which offense he faces, but the fact that he is pitching versus an abysmal SK lineup is just an added bonus on the cash game and GPP lock of the night. He’s topped 22 DK points in all but one start this season and is a sure fire play for both a safe floor and major GPP upside.

Shi Hwan Jang (R), HAN – $6,800 DK / $22 FD

While the first slotted pitcher on the KBO slate is a no brainer, the second pitcher we choose for our lineups is a real toss-up between Jang and the two names mentioned below. Ultimately, I’m willing to “risk it for the biscuit” with Jang here. While both David Buchanan (SAM) and Ki Young Im (KIA) make for fine options on the slate, I’m tempering expectations for the two of them because of their tough matchups; the fact that they’re both coming in higher owned than Jang at the time of writing gives the Hanwha arm another advantage for GPPs. Jang is now 1-4 on the season with a not-so-pretty 5.44 ERA and 4.69 FIP, to go along with a questionable 11.6% walk rate, but his 24.5% strikeout rate is what entices me here. After back-to-back solid starts where he put up 21.9 and 24.2 DK points, respectively, tonight he sees a Lotte lineup that has been wildly inconsistent since coming out of the gates on fire in the first few weeks of the season, and I’ll take my chances on Jang getting us to the top of the KBO leaderboards tonight.

GPP Options: Ki Young Im(R), KIA, David Buchanan (R), SAM

Kings of the Hill

Chris Flexen (R), DOO – $8,300 DK / $27 FD

The pitcher facing Hanwha featured in the Kings of theHill, to no one’s surprise. Not only does Chris Flexen have the best matchup onthe KBO slate, he offers a ton of upside for both cash games and GPPs. Flexenis now 3-2 on the season with a 3.46 ERA, 3.44 FIP, 1.25 WHIP, and a 22.9%strikeout rate. After seeing fellow teammate Raul Alcantara featured hereyesterday and torching the Eagles in 7 innings, allowing a single earned run on3 hits and striking out 9, there’s no reason to believe that Flexen cannot dothe same.

Chan Gyu Lim (R), LG – $8,200 DK / $28 FD

The LG pitcher gets the nod over Rucinksi here simply because of ownership at the time of writing, albeit both make a case to be a solid SP2 in our DK KBO lineups tonight. Lim does get the more favorable matchup versus Samsung while Rucinski faces KIA, and the former is now 3-2 on the season with a 3.99 ERA, 3.79 FIP, 1.27 WHIP, and a 24.3% strikeout rate. His strikeout upside is the highest on the slate while demonstrating excellent command (5.8% walk rate) through 8 starts and has had a good outing versus Samsung already, where he threw 99 pitches in 6 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits and striking out 6, good for 16.7 DK points.

GPP Options: DrewRucinski (R), NCD

The Batter’s Box

Kiwoon Heroes

Call this one a gut call, I think Kiwoon explodestonight. While the matchup versus William Cuevas in tough on paper, the samecan be said for Cuevas versus Kiwoon. The main reason why I like Kiwoon tonightis because of a concern surrounding Cuevas’ health; he was scheduled to pitchyesterday but ultimately had his start pushed back a day in favor of OdrisamerDespaigne and since he is coming off a hip injury, this leads me to believe hewas feeling the aftereffects of pitching 102 times versus Hanwha just a weekago. Cuevas has a 4.75 ERA and 4.51 FIP and has been exploited by the Heroesbefore, where he allowed 5 earned runs on 8 hits in only 4 innings.

Top Options: Byung Ho Park (1B), Jung Hoo Lee (OF), HaSeong Kim (SS), Dong Won Park (C), Keon Chang Seo (1B/2B)

Others: Hye Sung Kim (2B/SS), Jeong Hyeop Heo (OF)

NC Dinos

Another team that has a tough pitching matchup on the KBO slate, I like the Dinos versus Hyun Jong Yang and the KIA Tigers tonight. While I am still a firm believer in Yang’s talent as a pitcher (he’s even rumored to have been drawing MLB interest), he has looked terrible in his last two starts versus Kiwoon and Samsung, respectively, where he’s allowed a combined 9 earned runs on 15 hits and only has 5 strikeouts. With the amount of power the Dinos have that are right-handed, combined with one of the best hitters in the entire KBO in Sung Bum Na, the KIA southpaw could be in for another long night.

Top Options: Sung Bum Na (OF), Eui Ji Yang (C), Aaron Alterr (OF), Jin Sung Kang (1B/OF), Myung Gi Lee (OF), Jin Hyuk No (2B/SS), Suk Min Park (3B)

Honorable Mention: Doosan Bears

Kings of the Hill

Eric Jokisch (L), KIW – $9,700 DK / $30 FD

While the matchup may not be the best on the entire KBO slate, Eric Jokisch remains my top target tonight. The Kiwoon southpaw is now 7-2 across 10 starts with a 1.42 ERA, 3.13 FIP, 0.85 WHIP, and an 18.6% strikeout rate. While the KT lineup boasts some excellent bats in Baek Ho Kang, Mel Rojas Jr., and Jeong Dae Bae, they strike out a ton and Jokisch could exploit that; KT strikes out 7.52 times per game, good for second-most in the KBO. The last time Jokisch faced KT, he needed a mere 99 pitches to go 7 strong innings, giving up 1 unearned run on 5 hits while striking out 9 for 34.2 DK points.

Raul Alcantara (R), DOO – $8,600 DK / $28 FD

Alcantara has quietly gone about his business this season since coming over to Doosan in the offseason and makes for a prime candidate to lock in both our cash and GPP lineups on tonight’s KBO slate. While he warrants consideration simply because he’s facing Hanwha, Alcantara gives us enough upside to eat the chalk; he’s now 7-1 with a 3.70 ERA, 4.13 FIP, 1.25 WHIP, a 19.5% strikeout rate and 4.1% walk rate. He’s shown excellent command on the mound, has thrown 100 or more pitches in every start other than his first of the season (where he threw 99…), strikes out batters at a good rate, and faces Hanwha. What’s not to love here?

GPP Options: Tyler Wilson (R), LG, Jung Hyun Baek (L), SAM

The Batter’s Box

Kiwoon Heroes

The Heroes let us down two nights ago only to come back in a big way yesterday, putting up 10 runs on 16 hits. On tonight’s KBO slate, they get another favorable matchup versus Odrisamer Despaigne who has been fairly inconsistent this season. While he started off the campaign on a good note, Despaigne has come back down to Earth in his last six starts and could in trouble here versus Kiwoon; he’s pitching on only 4 days rest instead of 5 which makes me wonder how deep he will go into the game and has struggled versus elite offenses this year, such as Doosan and NC.

Top options: Byung Ho Park (1B), Ha Seong Kim (SS),Jung Hoo Lee (OF), Dong Won Park (C), Hye Sung Kim (2B/SS), Keon Chang Seo(1B/2B)

NC Dinos

The Dinos are in play on almost, if not every KBO slate, but tonight they may come in slightly lower owned than they typically do. Facing Drew Gagnon of the KIA Tigers, I’m hoping the field gets scared of the matchup and turns to other stacks, but NCD is in a prime spot to take advantage; Gagnon had been one of the best pitchers in the KBO early in the season, but like Despaigne, he has come back down to Earth in his last 5 starts. While his 0.18 HR/9 shows how talented he is at limiting the deep ball and could put up a decent amount of DK points based on his strikeout ability, I’m not convinced he’ll be able to keep them off the board for long and Gagnon will give up a ton of hits along the way.

Top Options: Sung Bum Na (OF), Eui Ji Yang (C), AaronAltherr (OF), Jin Sung Kang (1B/OF)

Other Options: Jin Hyuk No (2B/SS), Suk Min Park (3B),Myung Gi Lee (OF), Hee Dong Kwon (OF)

Kings of the Hill

Warrick Saupold (R), HAN – $8,500 DK / $23 FD

While most will get caught in the hype of choosing between Straily and Kelly at the top of the pricing grid to slot in as their SP1, I’ll gladly start my KBO lineups tonight with Warrick Saupold. While the Hanwha ace has gotten little run support all season long, he still has 5 wins and is now sitting at 5-4 with a 3.50 ERA, 3.65 FIP, 1.37 WHIP. Although he was sluggish out of the gate in terms of strikeouts per game, Saupold has 13 strikeouts in his last 12 innings over the past two games and is now up to a 14.8% strikeout rate on the season. While the Hanwha bullpen isn’t as bad as advertised, the Eagles know they have to keep Saupold in as long as possible to have a shot to get a win every time he’s on the mound; he’s topped 100 or more pitches in 8 of 10 starts this season and will be heavily relied upon tonight versus an inconsistent Tigers lineup.

Tae In Won (R), SAM – $7,700 DK / $22 FD

The SP2 slot is one where we can afford to getcreative on DK to increase of likelihood of taking down a GPP on tonight’s KBOslate, and Tae In Won is just that guy. The 20-year-old Lions righty has flashedsome major upside this season, going 4-2 with a 2.96 ERA, 5.00 FIP, and a 1.34WHIP. While his strikeout rate is a tad lower than I’d like it to be for DFS upsideat 14.2%, his matchup versus SK makes me love this play even more than otheroptions on the slate. Don’t expect a repeat of what David Buchanan did yesterday;Won may not throw a complete game with 7 strikeouts, but there’s no reason tobelieve he can’t take advantage of a terrible SK lineup en route to 20+ DK points.

GPP Options: Min Woo Lee(R), KIA, Dan Straily (R), LOT

The Batter’s Box

Doosan Bears

The Bears exploded for 14 runs on a whopping 19 hits yesterday and there’s no reason to believe they can’t do it again on tonight’s KBO slate. For one, they are much better on the road, with every better seeing significant improvements in ISO, wOBA, and hard contact rates. Tonight, they get another favorable matchup versus Young Gun Jo who, other than having a cool name, is no fun to have on your DFS roster; he’s now 1-1 on the season with a 6.87 ERA and 7.66 FIP, 1.96 WHIP, and an atrocious 14.6% walk rate. With Jo struggling to get out of the 3rd inning in 5 of 6 starts and being limited to 60-70 pitches per game, the combination of a poor starter and a lackluster bullpen sets up Doosan for a repeat performance here tonight.

Top Options: Jose Fernandez (1B/2B), Jae Hwan Kim(OF/1B), Joo Hwan Choi (1B/2B), Jae Il Oh (1B), Kun Woo Park (OF), Kyoung MinHur (3B)

LG Twins

The Twins haven’t wowed in terms of DFS production sincethey went on a tear about a week ago, but tonight they are in a prime spot to putup a ton of runs. LG will be facing 22-year-old Byung Wook Jo and the worstbullpen in the KBO; there isn’t a ton of data to be found on Jo considering he’sonly pitched 12 2/3 innings in 3 appearances this season, but what I do know isthat giving up a combined 11 hits to the two worst lineups in the KBO, SK andHanwha, cannot be a sign of good things to come for the youngster. Even if he doesescape a few innings here and there, Jo hasn’t thrown more than 80 pitches in astart yet and he could get pulled early on, leading the Twins to face a bullpenfor the majority of the game.

Kings of the Hill

Chang Mo Koo (L), NCD – $11,000 DK / 29 FD

DK has finally given Chang Mo Koo the price tag he deserves;he was constantly sitting around $9,500 on every KBO slate and today, he took amassive jump to $11,000. Nevertheless, Koo is by far the top target on the KBOslate and you can take two different approaches when building your lineups onDK since he is a definite lock on FD: you can make the bold call to fade inlarge field tournaments considering his price and prioritize big bats in the process,or you can secure the player who will arguably be the highest scorer on theentire slate. Koo is now 6-0 on the season with a 1.37 ERA, 2.42 FIP, 0.76WHIP, and a league-high 29.7% strikeout rate, While he did come back down to earthin his last start versus KT, which was bound to happen eventually, he’saveraging nearly 27 DK FPPG and is the best pitcher in the KBO.

Ki Young Im (R), KIA – $8,000 DK / $24 FD

Im’s start got rained out yesterday, so he is back asa top option on today’s KBO slate. While Chang Mo Koo instantly because the toptarget instead of Im, he still makes for a great play in both cash games andGPPs considering both the GPP options listed below him are going to garner someownership as well. While he’s no longer a lock on both sites because of Koo, heis my clear #2 on the slate; here’s yesterday’s take:

There are some great pitching options on today’s KBOslate and ownership should be fairly spread out in GPPs, but all of my lineups, especially cash builds, will start with Ki Young Im. The KIA pitcher has beenstellar all season long, going 4-3 with a 2.91 ERA, 3.13 FIP, 1.15 WHIP, 22.2%strikeout rate, 4% walk rate, and a league-leading 12% hard hit rate, tied withteammate Aaron Brooks and just ahead of another great option listed below. What’snot to love about Im here? His price on DK is below 8k, which is absurd, he hasa great matchup versus Hanwha, he sits over 20% in strikeout rate and doesn’t sacrificecommand to do so, and he has yet to give up a home run all season. He’s a lockon both sites for me.

GPP Options: DavidBuchanan (R), SAM, Seung Won Moon (R), SK

The Batter’s Box

Kiwoon Heroes

The Heroes were featured as the top stack on yesterday’sKBO slate and they came through with a night-leading 11 runs on 13 hits.Tonight, they have a similar matchup versus Young Ha Lee, who is now 1-4 on theseason with a 6.29 ERA, 4.58 FIP, 1.89 WHIP, and an 11.3% walk rate. If you’repaying for one or both pitchers listed in the Kings of the Hill, you’ll havetrouble fitting the entire stack, but there are some good value pieces listedas well.

Top Options: Byung Ho Park (1B), Jung Hoo Lee (OF), DongWon Park (C), Keon Chang Seo (1B/2B), Hye Sung Kim (2B/SS)

Complementary Options: Jeong Hyeop Heo (OF), Byung WooJeon (3B/2B)

NC Dinos

Cue the Dinos chalk night versus the Lotte bullpen. WonSam Jang gets the nod on the mound for the Giants tonight, and while we havelittle data on him this season, his one appearance back on May 12th was, uh,rough to say the least; he took the loss and gave up 5 earned runs on 10 hitsin only 4 innings of work versus Doosan and looked awful. He has history ofdifficulties with the long ball over his KBO career and could be in for a verylong night versus the Dinos. While nearly the entire batting order is listed astop options, they are sorted by preference at the beginning, considering performance,upside/ceiling, and price (point/$).

Top Options: Sung Bum Na (OF), Eui Ji Yang (C), AaronAltherr (OF), Jin Sung Kang (1B/OF), Hee Dong Kwon (OF), Myung Gi Lee (OF), JinHyuk No (2B/SS), Suk Min Park (3B)
