1/13 NHL DFS – The Daily Hot Shot

This article focuses on NHL DFS Picks for 1/13 on DraftKings and FanDuel. Both sites have fairly different scoring formats, particularly with the recent changes on DraftKings. We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so we can gain an edge on the field at large. Top Expensive Line

Washington Two – Evgeny Kuznetsov, Jakob Vrana, and T.J. Oshie

I do not know if they are really that expensive, as the Washington second line continues to come at a significant discount on DraftKings. They are more of a mid-priced line there. However, on FanDuel two of the three skaters are priced up, so it fits. The Capitals come in a -140 home favorite as of the time of writing and have continued to be productive. This line has eight GF over their last ten games, good for a three-way tie for fourth in the NHL during that period. Jakob Vrana was recently rewarded for his hot streak with a promotion to the first power-play unit. He certainly did not disappoint, as he scored a power-play goal the very first chance he had. Until their prices increase on DraftKings, just continue to roll them out. As for FanDuel, Vrana remains cheap over there so you can consider using him as a one-off, as opposed to using the full line.

The other expensive line in the discussion would be Boston One on the basis of sheer skill and talent. However, Philadelphia has been tough at home, so that game will be no cakewalk for them.

St. Louis Three – Alex Steen, Robert Thomas, Tyler Bozak

This game does not have a very high total but St. Louis is a heavy -215 favorite. It’s rare that I would recommend turning to a third line, but given the small slate, why not step outside the box a little bit. This line has six GF over their last ten games, so they have been surprisingly decent in terms of their production. They also see more ice time than your average third line with about fifteen to sixteen minutes a game per skater. This Ducks team has done little to protect their goaltenders all season, leading to a down year for John Gibson. You don’t have to use this line and can live in the middle instead. I don’t think that you need them fit a line like Washington Two above. However, if you want a tournament line with Boston One or a similarly expensive line, they might be worth a look.

Top Expensive Line

Tampa Bay One – Nikita Kucherov, Steven Stamkos, Brayden Point

The Tampa Bay Lightning have been absolutely lighting up the scoreboard recently. The Washington Capitals put up a big letdown yesterday against the Devils, but New Jersey probably won’t be able to make it back to back wins. Tampa Bay comes in a -210 favorite and with the Lightning, there is no decision anymore to make in terms of which line to choose, given that all three of their best skaters are paired up top. The top line has eight GF over their last ten games and should be able to add to that total here. In a cash game, I would just find a way to fit all three. The Toronto top line would be my alternate option for the expensive line choice.

Top Value Line

Florida Two – Vincent Trocheck, Noel Acciari, Brett Connolly

The Toronto and Florida game should be a shootout, as combined, it accounts for the highest total on the slate. There should be decent ownership on both teams’ top lines and they are certainly good plays. However, if looking for some savings we can turn to the Panthers second line. The second line has six goals over their last ten games with strong supporting stats such as 126 SATF. All three skaters are extremely affordable on both sites, allowing you to use expensive lines like Tampa Bay and Toronto’s first unit or costly one-offs if you wish. The Florida second unit also tends to come in at fairly low ownership, so they can help to set you apart on a smaller slate.

Welcome to WinDaily’s newest edition of the NHL Stack and Track! In this article, the 1/11 NHL Stack and Track, we will look at the top NHL stacks at each price range and rank the best and the worst goalie spots to target in tonight’s nice 10-game slate.

1/11 NHL Stack Report

Washington Capitals Two $$$
Vrana – Kuznetsov – Oshie (FanDuel: $19,700 | DraftKings: $16,500)
– This line provides tons of value tonight at home against New Jersey. This is the first vs second-worst matchup and the Caps are in a position to kick New Jersey while they’re down, on the road. New Jersey is among the league’s worst in goals allowed per game, while the Caps have the fourth-best goals per game record in the NHL this season and hold the second-highest goals per game record on this slate behind Tampa. Given Philly’s success at home which will hamper Tampa’s overall scoring ability, it should come to nobody’s surprise that the Capitals hold the best-implied goal total on today’s slate at a whopping 4.1 expected goals at the time of writing
Ideal Defensive Partner: Dmitry Orlov (FD: $4,400 | DK: $3,900)
St. Louis Blues Two $$
Sanford – O’Reilly – Perron (FanDuel: $16,200 | DraftKings: $15,100)
– Sanford hasn’t found much success on this line to this point, however, the Blues have been cruising and the rest of St. Louis’ second line has been on fire with the two players leading the team in scoring with one leading in goals, the other leading in assists and both finishing in 1st and 2nd in overall points. Not to mention together they have tallied three goals and seven assists in their last three games alone. Hank’s time in the league is coming to a close and the Swedish legends’ goaltending ability is quickly deteriorating. The Rangers do have promising goaltending options in their near future so Rangers fans can rest easy.

Chicago Blackhawks One $
Quenneville – Toews – Kubalik (FanDuel: $13,900 | DraftKings: $12,300)
– This play is a little unorthodox and like for St. Louis Two, Quenneville hasn’t been producing at the same rate as his other two linemates. Toews and Kubalik have been bright spots on what has been an overall inconsistent and underperforming Chicago side. Tonight, the Blackhawks will look to improve their home record against the Ducks who are an abysmal 6-13-2 on the road. The Ducks also take a lot of penalty minutes and haven’t been successful in killing them off. With Gibson not maintaining his form from prior seasons, Chicago’s top line appears to be an ideal candidate for a low owned stack with offensive upside.

Top Expensive Lines

Washington One “FanDuel” – Nicklas Backstrom, Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson

Washington Two “DraftKings” – Evgeny Kuznetsov, Jakob Vrana, T.J. Oshie

The two top lines for the Washington Capitals are both top ten lines in terms of goals scored over the last ten games, with eight for the second line and seven for the first line. The Caps are a slate high -250 home favorite against the Devils and should be able to bounce back from a disappointing loss last time out. As far as which line to go with, I think you just take what these sites give you and exploit the pricing. With such a tremendous markdown on the second line on DraftKings, I would use them there and get my exposure to the first line on FanDuel. The first line has better underlying statistics but it is also a line that is heavily dependent on Alex Ovechkin and not quite as balanced as the second line.

Top Value Line

Carolina One – Andrei Svechnikov, Warren Foegele, Jordan Staal

This line served it’s purpose last night and we can go back to the well once again. It was Warren Foegele lighting up the board for us and Carolina will remain at home to face an L.A. Kings team making the trip all the way east. The top line is now up to nine goals over their last ten games, tied for second in the NHL across that period. Carolina is a heavy -220 favorite and despite a scattered showing in the 3-0 win over the Coyotes, this is a much better matchup for them. The Kings have not allowed a shutout all season. Their general affordability opens up a lot in terms of lineup construction.

Top Expensive Line

Colorado One – Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, Gabriel Landeskog

The chalk of the night, Colorado has the highest implied total at 3.56, edging the Carolina Hurricanes who are at 3.40. Talent-wise this is easily one of the top five lines in NHL. They were just reunited so there is not a very large sample size in terms of recent production. However, this line has always been at or near the top of any NHL metrics during virtually any stretch that they have been paired together over the last few years. Tristan Jarry has been pretty solid in net for Pittsburgh so this is more about the skill of the Colorado top line than about picking on the Penguins. If you don’t have all three, be sure to at minimum play Nathan MacKinnon as a one-off in all of your cash lines, if not almost all your tournament lineups as well. I like the other two more on DraftKings where they are super cheap.

Top Value Line

Carolina One – Andrei Svechnikov, Warren Foegele, Jordan Staal

It is likely that using Colorado One would price you out of simultaneously using the Carolina second line. Therefore, in order to access some of Carolina’s 3.40 implied total, we must turn to the first line. Unfortunately, Andrei Svechnikov is the only skater who has power play time on this line. However, that hasn’t stopped them from scoring eight full line goals over their last ten games, tying the Tampa Bay top line and Capitals second line for third in the NHL during that span. Considering their supporting stats during that timeline, the goal count could have been even more impressive. The top line’s 138 SATF within the period is second only to the Las Vegas second line’s 141. Arizona comes in on the second night of a back to back after getting smashed by the Lightning. Anti Raanta might be back in the net which would be a slight downgrade for this line but it shouldn’t take them out of the running on a three-game slate.

Top Three Lines

Boston One – Patrice Bergeron, David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand

Let’s start with a line that needs no introduction. Boston is a heavy -195 favorite and draws a nice matchup with the Winnipeg Jets. 2nd worst in the NHL in terms of goals allowed on the road over the last month, they will arrive in Boston on the second night of a back to back. Those skates may be a bit weary on defense and Boston will be able to pick out the best matchups for the top line to take advantage of. If you want to leave one off due to cost it is probably Brad Marchand. Marchand has an extremely high bust rate over the last few weeks.

Tampa Bay One – Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Steven Stamkos

Tampa Bay has found it’s groove while pairing it’s top three skaters for the first time this season. The Lightning come in a -200 home favorite with a 3.82 implied goal total. They are 8-1-1 over their last ten games and last time out put up a massive 9-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks. For as long as this line is together they will be skyrocketing towards the top of the ranks. Generally, the Arizona Coyotes are not a team that I look to target, but an exception can be made here.

Las Vegas Two – Paul Stastny, Mark Stone, Max Pacioretty

Speaking of teams that are hot, Las Vegas has been on fire as well, going 6-3-1 over their last ten games and putting up points. This team has two top ten lines during that span. The Las Vegas top line is a top ten line but this line is a top-three line with a massive gap in SATF “141 to 102”, although it only resulted in a two-goal difference during that span. Especially without Jonathan Marchessault, the first line is just not as good so keep an eye to see if he is back at morning skate if you were thinking of using them. The Kings will head to Vegas on the second night of a back to back and a rested Golden Knights team should be ready to smash. They are a slate high -250 favorite and their 3.74 implied total as of the time of writing is also a slate high.

We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so we can gain an edge on the field at large. Top Three Lines

Washington One “FanDuel” – Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, Nicklas Backstrom, Add-On: John Carlson

Washington Two “DraftKings” – Evgeny Kuznetsov, Jacob Vrana, T.J. Oshie

Both of these lines were very active last night in Washington’s demolition of the visiting Ottawa Senators. They get another decent matchup against a Flyers team that has been giving up a lot of goals lately, albeit more so on road ice than at home. Both teams come in on a back to back so that is a bit of a scratch. Your best bet is just to take what the sites give you and use Washington One on FanDuel where they are a little bit cheaper and likewise for Washington Two on DraftKings, as they come in at a massive discount on that site. The options are limited so if you would turn to the Capitals on a large slate like last night’s, there is no reason to be afraid on a three-game slate. Washington comes in a -130 road favorite and should be in a position to deliver.

Toronto One – Auston Matthews, Mitchell Marner, Zach Hyman, Powerplay Add-On: John Tavares

This line has popped up a ton in the winner’s circle this season and they draw another sweet matchup on home ice. The Winnipeg Jets have allowed the most road goals in the NHL this season and I would expect that statistic to continue beyond tonight. The top line of Auston Matthews, Mitchell Marner, and Zach Hyman is tied for most full line goals in the NHL over their last ten games with nine. Considering there was a .939 save percentage against during that span, this number could be even higher. The other night against Edmonton was mostly a troll goal night despite a late goal from Matthews. Knowing how Toronto can go off I also don’t mind a five-man with John Tavares and Willian Nylander on the short slate. This would help to consolidate most of the main two lines and give you four skaters on the top power-play unit. In the alternate, they should also fit nicely with one of Washington’s lines. Toronto is a heavy -195 home favorite at the time of writing so likely the chalk.

Top Three Lines

Washington One – Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, Nicklas Backstrom, Add-On: John Carlson

This spot jumps out as Washington is a heavy -290 favorite with a large 4.20 implied goal total. It makes the most sense to turn to the top line here. Over the last month, the total goals between both of them and the second line are about even. However, the supporting stats tell a different story, perhaps best exemplified by the top lines 129 SATF over the last ten games, as opposed to the second lines 72 by comparison. The first line is creating more chances and is due for a big game. Tom Wilson is extremely cheap on FanDuel so I am more likely to use them there.

Montreal One – Tomas Tatar, Phillip Danault, Ilya Kovalchuk

The Canadiens, much like the Avs below, were nothing short of straight ass last night. However, it’s those two magic words once again, Red Wings. The second line was sort of chalky last night, along with Ilya Kovalchuk individually. However, you can also turn to the top line, as the addition of Kovalchuk offers up some additional savings and should be very popular once again. I think he is even fine as a one-off just to go stars and scrubs or perhaps one scrub and stars. All skaters on either line are also on one of the two power-play units.

Colorado One – Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog

The Avalanche totally burned us last night, but sometimes you have to have a short memory in DFS. The Rangers have actually been a little better over the last month. Be sure to check who is the third man in the top line at the morning skate, as last night the Avs swapped Mikko Rantanen up at the expense of Joonas Donskoi. Perhaps this was only due to being down against the Islanders, or it is a sign of things to come. If it is a permanent shift back to their main top line of the last couple of years, it will make the other two skaters even more dangerous. Colorado has a healthy 3.53 implied goal total so the oddsmakers in Vegas agree that a bounce-back is likely. They are facing Igor Shesterkin who has been good in the minors but will be making his NHL debut in net. Best of luck kid!

1/7 NHL Stack Report

Washington Capitals Two $$$
Vrana – Kuznetsov – Oshie (FanDuel: $19,500 | DraftKings: $16,300)
– This line has been producing offensively for Washington as of late and provides salary relief over the overpriced first line. As far as tonight’s game vs Ottawa goes, Anderson is so bad that both top lines are viable tonight. However, Washington’s second line holds a slight edge over the first line.
Ideal Defensive Partner: Dmitry Orlov (FD: $4,300 | DK: $3,800)
St. Louis Blues Two $$
Sanford – O’Reilly – Perron (FanDuel: $16,100 | DraftKings: $14,000)
– Sanford has recently been promoted to St. Louis’ best line as his new linemates lead the team in scoring and have piled on the goals recently with a goal and five assists in their last game alone. St. Louis has also been almost unbeatable at home this season whereas the Sharks hold a losing record on the road. Despite the fact that St. Louis is on a five-game losing streak they are currently on a five-game home winning streak, not to mention prior to these three games the Blues were on a seven-game win streak. I am confident that they will be able to return to form at home.
Ideal Defensive Partner: Alex Pietrangelo (FD: $6,400 | DK: $6,400)
Nashville Predators Three $
Grimaldi – Bonino – SMITH (FanDuel: $11,800 | DraftKings: $10,800)
– This line has been impressive. Though they may look insignificant, they have been playing like superstars. Smith has been one of my favorite plays since I’ve played DFS and he still finds a way to provide serious value even to this day. Currently, Smith has three goals and an assist in his last two games and his production has rubbed off on his teammates as his linemates have both received the benefits of Smith’s success. Rocco Grimaldi also has four points in his last two and last game Bonino recorded assists on both his linemate’s goals. This is truly one of the hottest depth lines since the break.

Top Three Lines

Toronto One – Auston Matthews, Mitchell Marner, Zach Hyman

Toronto has a sweet home matchup with the Edmonton Oilers, who are allowing 3.99 GA/60 over the last month “2nd worst in the NHL”. Meanwhile, this line is the third most productive in hockey over the last ten games with nine full line goals and strong peripheral stats across the board. Both Auston Matthews and Mitchell Marner share time on the top power-play unit while Zach Hyman skates on the second. You can always run the full line, a two-man of Matthews and Marner, and if choosing the latter, it’s not a bad idea to add John Tavares as to help get a piece of both Toronto lines plus the additional power play correlation.

Montreal Two – Max Domi, Nick Suzuki, Artturi Lehkonen

Winnipeg has allowed an NHL high 4.1 GA/60 over the last month, providing Montreal with a high upside spot at home. The Brendan Gallagher injury surely dampens their overall potential. However, they have found a way to produce despite absences and also come in cheap on both sites as a result. I do not have that strong a preference for either line but would lean towards the second as they have been hotter as of late and cost less. They make for a very strong value line or you can simply use Max Domi and just one of the other two.

Colorado One – Nathan MacKinnon, Joonas Donskoi, Gabriel Landeskog

At first look, this does not seem like an ideal matchup for Nathan MacKinnon and company. However, the Islanders are mired in a bit of a slump and that has come in large part from poor goaltending. They have surrendered an average of 3.56 goals per 60 minutes over the last month and now face one of the most dynamic offenses in the NHL. You can use MacKinnon as a one-off, as I would recommend in cash games, or roll out the full line. Either way, Colorado is definitely in play tonight. If their ownership is low, it will be an additional cherry on top.
