Jammed in between two big Tuesday and Thursday slates we have a nice five-game NHL DFS slate to look forward to. As far as the projected totals for tonight, they come in all ends of the spectrum. However, on a smaller slate like this, we can take a couple more stands.

Aside from reading the article, don’t forget to check out our NHL DFS Projection Model which is available every morning. Sign up for more Win Daily content here.

1/18 NHL Main Slate of Games – Beginning 7 p.m. ET

*All odds and player pricing below have been obtained from DraftKings and are accurate as of the time of writing*

Pittsburgh Penguins (-130) at Ottawa Senators (+110)6.5 Projected Goal Total

Boston Bruins (-165) at New York Islanders (+140)5.5 Projected Goal Total

Colorado Avalanche (+115) at Calgary Flames (-135)6 Projected Goal Total

Dallas Stars (-165) at San Jose Sharks (+140)6 Projected Goal Total

Tampa Bay Lightning (-180) at Vancouver Canucks (+155)6.5 Projected Goal Total

Tampa Bay One – “Brayden Point ($6,400), Brandon Hagel ($5,600), Nikita Kucherov ($7,800)

Dallas One will get some love here too but the Lightning will be facing the defensively deficient Canucks in a 6.5 total matchup. Tampa’s top line has been solid over their last ten games. They have put up 103 SATF and seven full goals as a line during that timeframe, good for sixth in SATF and tying for first in the NHL in goals across that span. If you want to leave off Kucherov and run it as a two-man, I don’t mind that. Kuch just simply hasn’t been scoring as many goals this season so hard to justify his price tag unless you can afford it.

10-Day Sample SizeSATF “measures all shot attempts including missed and block shot attempts”

1/18 NHL Favorite Contrarian Line

Calgary Three – “Mikael Backlund ($4,800), Andrew Mangiapane ($3,800), Blake Coleman ($3,400)”

The Flames will be at home and the whole team, particularly this line, has had some fire “no pun intended” peripheral stats lately. Calgary’s depth is notable, but as you can see from the table above, it has been the second and third lines that stand out. As a result, I don’t mind the Flames’ second line and if running multiple lines I’d feature my second lineup around them. That said, the third line has been #1 “you heard correctly” in the NHL in SATF over their last ten games. Alexander Georgiev in the opposing net has been fairly up and down as of late. I expect him to get peppered with shots all around here as the Flames really start to break out after their underwhelming start to the season.

Defenseman and Goalie

Defenseman

Ty Smith – Pittsburgh Penguins – $4,300 – Filling in for Kris Letang on the first line and top power-play unit for only $4,300, a no-brainer play in all formats.

Goalie

Linus Ullmark – Boston Bruins – $8,200 – On paper it makes sense with Boston the -165 favorite in a rare 5.5 total game. Ullmark’s 1.82 GAA and .938 save percentage are stellar. All things considered here, he should be $8,500. If you really need the salary or are building multiple lines I’d roster the Islanders goalie “could be either or entering a back-to-back”.

1/18 NHL Best Bet

Boston Bruins 60 Minute ML (-105) – DraftKings – 1 Unit

This Tuesday slate brings us a nice little eight gamer that looks rather interesting. Goaltending on this slate looks bad, so it could be a high scoring one. We may have to be close to perfect to nail it. Let’s find the best NHL DFS plays for DraftKings and FanDuel. Good luck!

Goalies

Samuel Ersson – Philadelphia Flyers: As mentioned above, the goaltending is pretty ugly looking tonight, but Ersson has been a solid backstop to a bad Philly team. They host the Ducks tonight, and both teams are on the second leg of a back-to-back. The Ducks come limping in from an offense perspective, scoring just 1.2 goals per game over their last five road games. They are also scoring just 1.6 goals over their last five overall. It’s a good spot for Ersson.

Stuart Skinner – Edmonton Oilers: The Oilers host the Kraken tonight, and Seattle has been playing well of late. This looks like a good upside spot, and Edmonton should be able to handle the Kraken.

Connor Hellebuyck – Winnipeg Jets: The Jets head to Montreal to face the Canadiens, who are scoring just 1.4 goals per game over their last five games. This is a good spot for Hellebuyck to get back to his old ways, as he has let us down a little recently.

High Risk Goalie Pick – Magnus Hellberg – Detroit Red Wings: The Red Wings face off against the Coyotes tonight in Arizona. Arizona is not known to be a powerhouse, and they have struggled to score. This is a risky pick because Hellberg is not exactly the best goalie we have ever seen. He should see some shot volume, and they SHOULD get a win, but he could also give up 5.

Others to Consider: Filip Gustavsson (MIN), Kevin Lankinen (NSH)

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Buffalo Sabres 1 – Tage Thompson/Jeff Skinner/Alex Tuch/Rasmus Dahlin: This is one of the best pay-up spots on the slate, as the Sabres head to Chicago to take on the defensively challenged Blackhawks. The Sabres have been struggling to score of late, but this is a spot we cannot ignore.

Edmonton Oilers Power Play – Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Zach Hyman/Tyson Barrie: This is a fantastic spot for one of the deadliest power play units in the league. The Kraken are ranked next to last in the league on the penalty kill. This unit should have a ton of upside tonight, and they may go overlooked. MAJOR NOTE – YOU MUST WATCH THE NEWS THROUGH THE DAY – it is possible that Evander Kane plays tonight, and he may slot right back into the top power play.

Winnipeg Jets 2 – Mark Scheifele/Cole Perfetti/Blake Wheeler: This second line should see the top line for the Canadiens tonight. Montreal is pretty banged up right now, so this is a good matchup up and down the board. Ehlers didn’t skate this morning, so it’s possible that these lines get shuffled, so keep an eye on that through the day.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Philadelphia Flyers 3 – Scott Laughton/Kevin Hayes/Wade Allison: The Flyers are in a good spot offensively tonight, so it makes sense to have exposure to all of their lines. Two and three make the most sense, but if you are MME, then it also makes sense to grab some of the top line. The matchups dictate that this is the ‘best’ position of the bunch. They should have some good upside and lower ownership.

Detroit Red Wings 3 – Pius Suter/David Perron/Tyler Bertuzzi: This third line should see a date with Arizona’s third line, setting up a very, very nice matchup. This game doesn’t exactly scream DFS gold, but there is some good upside here.

Florida Panthers 2 – Sam Bennett/Matthew Tkachuk/Carter Verhaeghe: The second Florida line should see time against both the first and third Toronto line. The third line for Toronto is decent on defense, but the top line is not as good. They should see more time against that first line, setting up a nice looking sneaky play tonight.

So far, there has been no shortage of entertaining football in the Wild Card round. We saw big favorites Buffalo and Cincinnati pull out close wins against backup QBs. We saw the Jaguars pull off one of the best comebacks in NFL postseason history. Here’s hoping that the Dallas vs Tampa Bay showdown closes out the opening weekend with some fireworks. Dallas is listed as a 2.5-point favorite with a total of 45.5 points. Let’s make some cash!

Captain/MVP Plays

Tom Brady, Tampa Bay ($15,000 DraftKings, $15,000 FanDuel)

Betting against Brady is generally a losing proposition in the postseason. Talent-wise, the Cowboys should win this game, and they may very well do that. Regardless, the Bucs go as Brady goes. They have been scoring at a pathetic pace of late, but the Cowboys are serving up yards and points in bunches.

Brady put up his best performance of the season in his last full game, firing off 432 passing yards and four scores (one rushing). He also threw a trio of TD passes a few weeks prior against the Bengals. Brady may just be a lock in lineups for tonight. Win or lose, he will go out swinging.

CeeDee Lamb, Dallas ($15,900 DraftKings, $14,000 FanDuel)

Lamb has been scorching hot over the last month, totaling 22.7, 37, 24, and 16.2 DraftKings points. The Cowboys will need to be at their best if they are going to take down Brady in his own backyard. Lamb has been the most consistent member of the passing game, and I expect Dak to look his way early and often.

Tony Pollard, Dallas ($12,000 DraftKings, $12,500 FanDuel)

It’s Tony Pollard season, and I’m hoping it continues past tonight. The entire offense was pathetic at best last week against Washington, and I’m writing that one off completely. Prior to that, Pollard had shown consistency and upside all in one.

The three previous games, Pollard averaged 13 carries and six targets per contest. He parlayed those opportunites into nearly 250 yards and a pair of scores. Sure, Zeke will still command a good amount of touches, but Pollard’s involvement in the passing game puts him atop the list for me.

FLEX/AnyFLEX Plays

Leonard Fournette, Tampa Bay ($7,200 DraftKings, $10,500 FanDuel)

It’s playoff Lenny time! Rachaad White has carved out a nice role in this offense, but I’m riding the Fournette train tonight. The Cowboys have been serving up points in bunches of late, and Fournette is primed to take advantage.

He has massive upside here as well, as shown by his participation in the run and pass game. He is elite at the goalline as well, and if this game plays into Tampa Bay’s hands, he could see 20+ touches. Fire him up!

Dalton Schultz, Dallas ($6,400 DraftKings, $9,500 FanDuel)

Every QB needs a nice safety blanket, and Schultz has carved out that role with the Cowboys. Even in a week where the offense struggled, Schultz saw nine targets against Washington. In fact, he has nine or more targets in three of his last five games.

Dak Prescott needs to find a rhythm in this one and not force the ball into too many tight spots. Schultz should be a popular target tonight.

Other Options

If I have to choose a defense here, it’s the Bucs. Prescott has been wild since his return, and if he plays at all like he did in Week 18, the Cowboys are in trouble. I’m not prioritizing them, but they are in play. I think this one is fairly high scoring.

Mike Evans has a massive ceiling as usual, but I do expect his ownership to be high here. Pairing him with Brady could be an elite combo. From a strategy perspective, I think Chris Godwin is the move for the showdown slate.

Brett Maher hasn’t missed a FG since Week 12. He did miss an XP last week, but he is a solid option here in what should be a high scoring affair. I lean his way over Ryan Succop in this one.

Michael Gallup has 17 targets over the last three weeks, but the erratic Prescott has completed just seven of those attempts. He is a fine option for cheap.

I’m not going to talk anyone out of playing Dak Prescott by any means. If I’m playing one QB though, it’s Brady for me.

Good luck in the showdown slate, and we will see you at the top of the leaderboards!

Today’s Monday holiday brings us a split slate for the whole day. At 1pm Eastern, a slate of five games kicks off, while the main slate brings us a nice six game slate, starting at 6pm Eastern*. Main slate looks like a good one, so we will dive right in. Let’s check out our DFS picks for DraftKings and FanDuel. Good luck!

*This article will be focused only on the main slate at 6pm (7pm on FanDuel). Check out Discord for notes for the early slate!

Goalies

Juuse Saros – Nashville Predators: The Predators host the Flames tonight in what should be a fairly tight game. Saros has some very good looking numbers this season and has some upside in this matchup.

Logan Thompson – Vegas Golden Knights: The Knights host Dallas tonight, and Dallas on the road is just not very good. This should be a good spot for the Knights’ goalie, and he should see a decent number of shots.

High Risk Goalie Pick – Elvis Merzlikins – Columbus Blue Jackets: The Jackets host the Rangers tonight, who have been allergic to scoring recently, at least at even strength. On top of that, they are on the second leg of a back-to-back, and had to travel last night. All of that sets up nicely for Elvis, and his numbers over his last five are surprisingly decent. It is still the Rangers, and we know they can blow up at any time, of course.

Others to Consider: Jake Oettinger (DAL)

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Pittsburgh Penguins 1 – Sidney Crosby/Jake Guentzel/Bryan Rust/Ty Smith: The Penguins’ offense has gone rather stagnant lately, but this is a fantastic get-right spot for them. They will be hosting the Ducks tonight, and this line should see the depth lines for Anaheim. The Ducks are giving up a whopping 4 goals against per game over their last five, and as a team, over 40 scoring chances and 19 high danger chances. The Pens should be able to capitalize early and often. Consider a power play look also.

Ottawa Senators 1 – Tim Stutzle/Brady Tkachuk/Drake Batherson/Thomas Chabot: The Sens have a great matchup tonight, as they head to St. Louis to face the Blues. This line should see a lot of the top line for STL, setting up a very, very nice matchup.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Nashville Predators 1 – Juuso Parssinen/Matt Duchene/Filip Forsberg/Roman Josi: This is an “eye test” line, where the numbers don’t look amazing, but they are in a small sample. This is more of a gut feel, so this line comes with some risk. The Predators don’t really do much matching, so this line should see a little bit of everyone, and has a nice goalie matchup.

Columbus Blue Jackets 1 – Jack Roslovic/Patrik Laine/Johnny Gaudreau: This top line for the Jackets is in a decent spot tonight, and if Halak ends up regressing back to his normal self, then this becomes even better.

St. Louis Blues 2 – Brayden Schenn/Ivan Barbashev/Brandon Saad: This second line is in a good spot tonight against the depth for Ottawa, and they get a really good goalie matchup, making this line a very interesting value play.
