Friday 10/29 NHL Breakdown

Hey everyone and Happy Halloween Weekend! We are now two weeks into this NHL season, and it has been a very interesting one to start. SO much news, happenings, and surprises have already happened this season. Tonight’s slate is a nice little six gamer, which is a great slate size. Not too many, not too few, which means that ownership should be spread out just enough to get different. Let’s take a look and have some fun tonight!

Goalies:

Ilya Samsonov – Washington Capitals: The Capitals have a very nice looking matchup tonight against a very bad Arizona Coyotes team who is on a traveling back to back. The Coyotes were just smacked around pretty badly by the Lightning, and now they have to face the Caps. I almost feel bad for them. Samsonov will be your chalk goalie and he should get an easy win. The shot upside should be limited, though.

Braden Holtby – Dallas Stars: The Stars get a nice matchup tonight against the Ottawa Senators, who have a tendency to be stingy, but Holtby has been playing pretty well so far. He is sporting a 0.939 SV% and a decent 2.04 GAA. The Stars should be able to handle this team, and the shot upside could be surprisingly nice.

Elvis Merzlikins – Columbus Blue Jackets: Elvis has the best numbers on the slate, sporting a 1.19 GAA and 0.952 SV%. He is on the road against the Rangers, so this is definitely a GPP pick. The shot upside will be there, and he has a chance to shut down a team that we have seen be capable of scoring.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Thomas Greiss – Detroit Red Wings: Honestly, I was torn between Greiss and Lankinen here, and I think you can do either one in this position when playing deep GPP contests. We will start with Greiss: the Panthers had a coaching transition after the Joel Quenneville mess, so there could be a bit of a transition in play style. That being said, Greiss should see shot volume and could be a potential upset spot. I like the upside in deep GPPs. For Lankinen, the Hurricanes are known for low danger shots and are on a back to back. Lank has been playing well, so I could definitely see some upside here as well. Your choice when it comes to these two, and you can let salary dictate your call.

Lines to Build Around:

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Washington Capitals 1 – Evgeny Kuznetsov/Alex Ovechkin/Tom Wilson/John Carlson: We mentioned earlier that the Coyotes are BAD. The truth is, they don’t match up well to almost every team in the league, but when you unleash one of the best teams in the league with one of the best players in the world, it is bound to be bad for them. I expect this line to be super chalky, so to get a little different, you can replace Wilson with Sheary and you will then have a power play look with access to the second line.

Dallas Stars 1 – Roope Hintz/Jason Robertson/Joe Pavelski/John Klingberg: This line had so many opportunities the last time out, when we loved them against the Golden Knights. The opportunity that they are producing and the fact that they were stifled tells me that they were unlucky in that matchup. Tonight, they have an even better matchup, and I am going to ride this line.

High Risk Lines:

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Anaheim Ducks 1 – Trevor Zegras/Adam Henrique/Rickard Rakell/Jamie Drysdale: The Ducks, and this line specifically, have a nice matchup tonight against the depth lines of the Golden Knights. I like them tonight, as Lehner has not been great, and the Golden Knights are still depleted. I can see this line going way under the radar tonight, and they have a good even strength opportunity.

Carolina Hurricanes 3 – Jordan Staal/Nino Niederreiter/Jesper Fast/Brett Pesce: At home, Carolina matches this line with the opposing top line. That opposing top line is Chicago 1, who is surrendering a big number of high danger chances per 60 (24.71) and a massive number of shots and scoring chances. Something to note: It’s a pretty small sample for the Chicago line, so that’s why this is a high risk play. However, Chicago overall is not playing great defensively, so we can roll these guys as upside plays. I have the Carolina power play under honorable mentions, and I will have some access to them as well tonight in multiple lineups, but I love the low owned upside here.

Honorable mentions: Vegas Golden Knights 1, New York Rangers 2, Detroit Red Wings 1, Carolina Hurricanes Power Play

This article focuses on 10/28 NHL Picks for both DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbooks and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We analyze tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so that we can gain an edge on the field at large. Full rankings for each position for both sites are available below.

Thursday 10/28 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for a nine-game Thursday slate!

With these larger slates, I highly advise passing on full three-man lines but instead going with pairs of two-man stacks as the goal is to attempt to capture the top scorers on the night across multiple games.

Full DraftKings and FanDuel Rankings can be found below as well as cash game considerations for each site.

Favorite Lines

I am writing this the night before, but the assumption is tonight Sidney Crosby returns. FanDuel has him priced accordingly, but there is a considerable discount on DraftKings.

As a result, we can expect him to be a staple in cash lineups and many tournament lineups if active, as anyone paying half attention will scoop him up. There is no need to be cute on a nine-game slate so I would take advantage of the misprice while it lasts.

Pittsburgh One “Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel Two Man”DraftKings

If Crosby makes his debut then I think it makes a lot of sense to roll those savings into a two-man stack that gives us the core of the Pens top line.

Winnipeg Two “Andrew Copp, Nikolaj Ehlers, Paul Stastny” – FanDuel

Winnipeg One “Kyle Connor, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Evgeny Svechnikov” – DraftKings

Given the possible returns of Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele, we will have to see if these lines change at all tomorrow. Copp is super cheap on FanDuel and that line might be sort of off the board for tournaments plus all three skaters will be on the top power-play unit assuming Wheeler/Scheifele aren’t back.

The top line isn’t expensive at all either outside of Connor. I don’t mind using them if running a few entries.

Friday 10/22 NHL Breakdown

Hey everyone, and welcome to the Friday Night Forecheck! My name is Jon Love, and I am new to the Win Daily Sports family. I am VERY excited to be here to talk hockey with everyone! Tonight, we have a four game slate with some heavy chalk spots and some interesting plays. Please remember – tonight’s slate locks at 6PM Eastern, which is an hour earlier than usual!

Goalies:

Linus Ullmark – Boston Bruins: Ullmark travels tonight to his former barn to play his former team, the Buffalo Sabres. Surprisingly, the Sabres are scoring and playing better than I think anyone would think in the early going, but the Bruins are a different class of team. Not only that, the Bruins were just beat pretty badly in Philly the other night, so I think they are going to be motivated. Ullmark will look to prove something tonight behind a superior team and should get the win, with a potential for limited save upside.

Michael Hutchinson – Toronto Maple Leafs: The Leafs take on a San Jose Sharks team that is very young, and are also on a traveling back-to-back. Hutch is a heavy home favorite, and with the traveling factor, I think the Leafs are in a good spot tonight to get Hutch the win. San Jose has a measly 46.34 CORSI% on this young season, compared to 56.22 CORSI% for the Leafs. Translation: the Leafs should control the puck for most of the game, limiting the chances for the Sharks.

Bonus GPP Goalie PickCraig Anderson – Buffalo Sabres: As much as the Bruins should dominate this game, the Sabres, as mentioned, have been playing pretty well of late. Tonight is a huge test for this team. Anderson is boasting a solid 0.954 SV% and 1.5 GAA, just a week into the new season. A matchup with Boston tonight means a lot of shots and potential for a lot of saves. I expect him to give a few up, but the shot bonus is in play here for our DraftKings players. Reserve this play for deep GPPs, and make sure you don’t stack Boston against him in the same lineup!

Lines to Build Around:

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Boston Bruins 1 – Patrice Bergeron/David Pastrnak/Brad Marchand/Charlie McAvoy: The B’s head to Buffalo tonight in what should be a juicy matchup for this top line. These guys are one of the most prolific scoring units in the league, and tonight should afford them a ton of opportunities to score. Buffalo has been stingier than we expected so far in this young season, but they are still giving up close to 10 high danger chances per 60 minutes as a team. If you give Boston, or this line, that many chances, they will capitalize. Taylor Hall can be added to this stack for a power play look.

Edmonton Oilers Power Play – Connor McDavid/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Leon Draisaitl/Tyson Barrie: It’s really hard to argue against Edmonton on any slate. Tonight is no different. Vegas is depleted from an offensive standpoint, without Pacioretty and Stone. On the defensive side, they will be missing one of their shot blocking D men in Martinez. The Oilers played last night, but I fully expect them to be able to take advantage of this depleted team tonight, and the power play is the best way to stack up the Oilers. Zach Hyman can replace Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in this unit if you really need the salary relief.

Toronto Maple Leafs 2 – John Tavares/William Nylander/Michael Bunting/Jake Muzzin: The Leafs have a home matchup tonight against a young team on a traveling back-to-back. I like them to have a field day tonight against the Sharks. The second line will be my focus, but I can absolutely see stacking the power play to get you exposure to Matthews and the top line.

High Risk Lines:

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Vegas Golden Knights 1 – William Karlsson/Reilly Smith/Jonathan Marchessault/Alex Pietrangelo: The Oilers are favored tonight, but I expect this game to be high event, as both teams are generating 12+ high danger chances per 60 minutes. This line is the only viable Vegas line, so they will get their chances in a high event matchup. The opportunities should be there, and if they capitalize, they could be a nice stack tonight. I can see game stacking EDM/VGK tonight, if you can fit it.

Dallas Stars 2 – Roope Hintz/Jacob Peterson/Alexander Radulov/Esa Lindell: The Stars host the LA Kings tonight, and at first glance, the game does not look super exciting. However, this line has been generating some excellent rates, in a very small sample. If they follow the same line matching trends as last year, I expect this line to match up with the Kopitar line for the most part tonight. The opportunity will be there, and Peterson has been an exciting rookie addition to this team. I like the chemistry here and they should be low owned.

Honorable mentions: San Jose Sharks 1, Los Angeles Kings 1

Thursday 10/21 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for a juicy ten-game Thursday slate!

With these larger slates, I highly advise passing on full three-man lines but instead going with pairs of two-man stacks as the goal is to attempt to capture the top scorers on the night across multiple games.

Full DraftKings and FanDuel Rankings can be found below as well as cash game considerations for each site.

The Chalk

With a 6.5 implied goal total, near even odds, a start time at main lock, etc., there are many reasons in place to provide the basis for the oncoming Colorado/Florida chalk.

Of all of the lines in this game, with Nathan MacKinnon making his season debut post-Covid and Andre Burakovsky offering value, understandably, the Colorado top line of MacKinnon, Burakovsky, and Mikko Rantanen should be the most popular.

However, for value on DraftKings, it is hard to top the Panthers’ second line featuring Sam Bennett, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Owen Tippett. On FanDuel, my lean is towards the first line due to a large increase in price over there for the Florida second line. The Panthers’ first line of Aleksandr Barkov, Carter Verhaeghe “much cheaper on FanDuel” and Anthony Duclair does unfortunately only feature Barkov alone on the top power-play unit. If targeting the Florida power play I’d probably roll a two-man stack of Bennett and Huberdeau.

In terms of individual chalk, Burakovsky, as mentioned due to a bump to the Colorado first line with Gabriel Landeskog’s injury should be a popular value play. We can also expect the likes of Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, and Alex Ovechkin to soak up a lot of the ownership on the high end. Over on FanDuel, Brent Burns will likely be chalk or at least should be for $5,000.

The Contrarian Play

Carolina Hurricanes “DraftKings”

Unfortunately, the Hurricanes’ power play is a hodgepodge of their top two lines. Therefore, I think first off you’re reducing “Carolina One: Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen, Jesperi Kotkaniemi” or “Carolina Two: Andrei Svechnikov, Vincent Trocheck, Martin Necas” to two-man stacks of either Aho/Teravainen or Svechnikov/Trocheck. That will give you access to the two best players on each line and the top power-play unit. Montreal has had a nightmare start to the season, last we saw them getting destroyed by Buffalo. They will have the home crowd behind their back but perhaps played above their heads last year in the playoffs and it shows now. This is a solid Carolina team and they should all be 5-7% owned if that, on a ten-game slate.

10/21 NHL Game Odds and Totals

Sunday 10/17 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back for the weekend return of the Hot Shot!

Unfortunately, we go from nine games the last time out to only one game so it’s showdown time. However, as the great Rick Bobby once said you’re either first or you’re last and that will be our mantra/approach tonight.

The Rundown

Our lone game today features the young Senators traveling to face a Dallas team coming in as pretty decent favorites at -160. From a betting perspective, I think that there’s a bit more value on the Senator’s side of things. We will have to wait and see whether Brady Tkachuk makes his season debut or not for Ottawa after just signing a huge contract.

Since we only have two teams playing, let’s take a full look at both teams’ lines starting with the favored Stars.

Dallas Stars

Dallas Two “Roope Hintz, Joe Pavelski, Jacob Peterson”

Looking at the lines above and considering salary if targeting the Stars, with price and role considered my lean is towards using the second line. They cost considerably less and have full additional correlation on the top power-play unit. On a bigger slate, I like using two-man stacks a bit more in an attempt to capture points from a couple of games. But as this is a showdown slate I’d roll all three. We still have a lot of newbies playing so my thought is they figure the top line is by nature the best line to choose from, giving us some ownership edge considering the circumstances.

Ottawa Senators

So, we will have to see whether Tkachuk makes his debut for this game or later in the week. Based on no inside information if I had to guess, I’d assume later this week, but we will see.

Ottawa One “Josh Norris, Tim Stuetzle, Drake Batherson”

This is sort of the de facto line much with the Stars second line as they are the line fully represented on the top power-play unit. If Tkachuk enters the equation we can expect these lines to be shaken up, so then would be a great time for people to pop into discord and find out updated information. However, assuming he’s not, we can roll the top line in full as there is no need to condense our stack on a showdown slate as discussed above.

10/17 NHL Game Odds and Totals

Ottawa Senators (+130) at Dallas Stars (-160) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total

10/17 NHL FanDuel Individual Rankings

Centers

  1. Esa Lindell – Dallas – $6,500
  2. Jacob Peterson – Dallas – $6,500
  3. Victor Mete – Ottawa – $6,500
  4. Jamie Benn – Dallas – $9,500
  5. Alexander Radulov – Dallas – $10,000
  6. Joe Pavelski – Dallas – $11,500

  5. Esa Lindell – Dallas – $7,000
  6. Denis Gurianov – Dallas – $4,600

This article will focus on NHL Daily Fantasy picks for both FanDuel and DraftKings. Using advanced hockey metrics, slate analysis, and line by line evaluation, this article will point you towards what we think are the best plays for the night! Good luck!

Friday 10/15 NHL Breakdown

Hey everyone, and welcome to the first EVER Friday Night Forecheck! My name is Jon Love, and I am new to the WinDaily family. I am VERY excited to be here to talk hockey with everyone! Tonight, we have a small, three game slate, and with the volatility of three game slates, I do not recommend playing cash.

Goalies:

Cam Talbot – Minnesota Wild: Talbot has a nice matchup tonight as they head to Anaheim to face the Ducks. I like the Wild in this matchup and expect him to get the win. Something to note: he did not finish the preseason, as he was dealing with personal matters, so just be sure to keep an eye on the news. Should he not get the start, Kaapo Kahkonen will likely be in line, and I like him here just as much.

Carter Hart – Philadelphia Flyers: Hart struggled towards the end of last year, and was surely a disappointment. Since the defensive rebuild over the offseason, and some time for him to get his head right, Hart should be in the mix as one of the top goalies this year. The talent is there, and I think tonight he has a chance to be the top goalie on the slate.

Lines to Build Around:

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Chicago 1 – Tyler Johnson/Alex Debrincat/Patrick Kane/Seth Jones: The top line for Chicago has tons of upside, especially with Tyler Johnson newly added to the mix. In a game that should pretty much lack defense all around, this line has a ton of upside tonight.

Philadelphia 1 – Sean Couturier/Claude Giroux/Travis Konecny/Ivan Provorov: Philly opens the season at home against the Vancouver Canucks tonight. They spent their offseason revamping the defense on this team, and added plenty of key pieces to the roster. These defensive additions should relieve some pressure from the forwards and open up their game. I like them a lot tonight against Vancouver and Demko.

High Risk Lines:

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

New Jersey 1 – Jack Hughes/Yegor Sharangovich/Janne Kuokkanen/Dougie Hamilton: The addition of Dougie Hamilton to this team should do wonders in terms of both leadership and talent. I expect tonight’s game with Chicago to be back and forth, high event hockey. This is one of the younger, up-and-coming groups in the league, and the way that Chicago is on defense should afford them opportunities aplenty.

Vancouver 2 – Elias Pettersson/J.T. Miller/Vasily Podkolzin/Quinn Hughes: I expect the Couturier line to match up with the Horvat line for most of the night, as Philly generally matches best on best. With that being said, this line should have some opportunities for offense against the depth of Philly, and the talent on this line is pretty good. Of course, if playing Hart, these guys should not be in the same lineup.

Honorable mentions/others I am targeting: Anaheim 3/Minnesota 1

Cash Considerations “DraftKings”

On a three game slate, I do not recommend playing cash.
