Friday 11/12 NHL Breakdown

Hey everyone, and welcome back to another Friday Forecheck! Tonight, we will break down the five game NHL slate for you. It has a lot of big names on it, and some other interesting places to go, so let’s get right into it! Good luck!

Goalies

Jack Campbell – Toronto Maple Leafs: The Leafs have a home matchup tonight against the Calgary Flames, who have been firing off shots to the tune of 35.15 per game this year. This sets up Campbell to have some nice upside tonight, and as a favorite, that is what we like to see. He will likely give up a couple of goals, but the DK save bonus is squarely in play here.

Frederik Andersen – Carolina Hurricanes: Freddie is a heavy favorite at home against the Flyers tonight, and there is definitely some upside here as well. Philly has struggled a bit on the road from a scoring perspective, potting only 2.2 goals per game in their five road games. Carolina has some excellent puck possession numbers at home over their last five, so this should be a good spot for a Freddie win.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Carter Hart – Philadelphia Flyers: On the other side of the Carolina game, the Hurricanes shoot the puck a ton, and Hart has been on his game. This is a prime spot for a high shot volume upside, and if he can steal a win, that’s an even nicer bonus. Joonas Korpisalo can be considered here for a similar spot, but he carries even more risk.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Edmonton Oilers 1 – Connor McDavid/Zach Hyman/Jesse Puljujarvi/Tyson Barrie: Talk about opportunity…this line has a date tonight with the third line for the Buffalo Sabres. That third line is giving up a whopping 5.05 goals against per 60, 10.1 high danger chances against per 60, and 3.03 high danger goals against per 60 in a 59 minute sample size. This top line produces 17.05 high danger chances per 60 and 2.13 high danger goals per 60. This line has been one of the hottest in the league, and there is no way we are going to overlook them tonight. Consider adding Leon Draisaitl with Connor McDavid, as the two have been lethal this season.

Toronto Maple Leafs 1 – Auston Matthews/Michael Bunting/William Nylander/Morgan Rielly: The Leafs have a nice home matchup tonight against the Calgary Flames, and if John Tavares is out, this line will need to be relied on for scoring. You can also consider a power play stack here, but the top line should see the depth lines for the Flames tonight in a good spot.

Washington Capitals 1 – Evgeny Kuznetsov/Alex Ovechkin/Tom Wilson/John Carlson: The Capitals tonight have a great matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets, and specifically, this top line against the second line. Columbus has been matching their top line to the opposing second line, and their second line to the opposing top line. That second line is allowing 16 high danger chances per 60, while this line produces 11.69. Keep in mind that this is a small sample, but the opportunity should be there for Ovi to continue to climb up the all-time scoring ranks tonight.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Carolina Hurricanes 1 – Sebastian Aho/Andrei Svechnikov/Teuvo Teravainen/Tony DeAngelo: As mentioned above, the Canes have a nice looking home matchup tonight against the Flyers. This line should see a majority of the depth lines this evening, putting them in a nice upside matchup.

Calgary Flames 2 – Sean Monahan/Blake Coleman/Andrew Mangiapane: The Flames have a tough matchup tonight against the Leafs on the road, but this line is great for value. In a high event matchup, they should have some good opportunities and could go very overlooked tonight.

Philadelphia Flyers 2 – Derick Brassard/Oskar Lindblom/Cam Atkinson/Ivan Provorov: The Flyers second line has a date with the top six for Carolina tonight, and they have some decent upside. With Lindblom coming up to this line, Joel Farabee has been moved to the third line. Farabee still plays on the second power play, though, so he can be used in this stack if you want a slightly different look.

Honorable mentions: CBJ2, CHI1, BUF1, PHI1

Value Options – DraftKings

Center: Sean Monahan ($3000) – Calgary Flames – 3k flat for a second line center that also centers the top power play unit is a fantastic value, and Monahan can be used tonight for salary relief. It also helps that he is part of the CGY2 stack that we like.

Wing: Jakub Voracek ($3700) – Columbus Blue Jackets -Jake is a top line winger and also spends time on the power play, so $3700 is a good price for the potential.

Defense: Jake Bean ($2700) – Columbus Blue Jackets – Bean is a top pair D man who has been averaging around 22 minutes per game and generally fills up the fringe stats. The downside is that he does not play any time on the power play, but that price is nice for someone who can likely get you 2-3x value.

Value Options – FanDuel

Center: Derick Brassard ($3700) – Philadelphia Flyers – Brassard is a nice price on FanDuel tonight, and with the opportunity he has, it is a good spot to go if you need some value.

Wing: Gustav Nyquist ($3500) – Columbus Blue Jackets – The second line for the Jackets is a nice looking one, and for a measly $3500, you can definitely take a chance on Gus tonight.

Defense: Dmitry Orlov ($3600) – Washington Capitals – Orlov averages about 20 minutes per game and contributes in ways such as shots and shot blocking. If you can luck into an assist or goal from him, that’s even better.

Cash Considerations – DraftKings

Leon Draisaitl – C – Edmonton Oilers

Alex Ovechkin – W – Washington Capitals

Tyson Barrie – D – Edmonton Oilers

Frederik Andersen – G – Carolina Hurricanes

Thursday 11/11 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for an eleven-game Thursday slate!

With these larger slates, I highly advise passing on full three-man lines but instead going with pairs of two-man stacks as the goal is to attempt to capture the top scorers on the night across multiple games.

Full DraftKings and FanDuel Rankings can be found below as well as cash game considerations for each site.

Three Favorite Lines

Winnipeg Three 2 Man “Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler”DraftKings or FanDuel

It’s not too often that I would choose to feature a team’s third line. However, we can make an exception here as Schiefele and Wheeler are still averaging a normal amount of time on ice and feature on the top power-play unit. Furthermore, they offer us considerable savings relative to their collective talent level. The two-man stack gives us the best of everything and the ability to still fill out the rest of our lineups with ease. There is not much data on this pairing as they have only been together for a week but there’s not much we need to see for their prices.

Ottawa One “Josh Norris, Brady Tkachuk, Zach Sanford” – DraftKings or FanDuel

Ottawa One has been killing it recently to the tune of an NHL second-best ten full-line goals and eighth-best shot attempts for, despite Tkachuk missing time to begin the season. They remain moderately priced and host the Kings in one of three games on the slate with a six total. You can run the two-man with Tkachuk and Norris as they are the main two skaters here and feature on the top power-play or substitute Drake Batherson for Sanford if looking for further power-play correlation. On DraftKings, Tkachuk in particular seems way underpriced.

Washington One “Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Tom Wilson” – DraftKings or FanDuel

Perhaps a bit chalkier than the other listings but on an eleven-game slate, there is no need to think about such things. The Washington top-line leads all lines in the NHL with all total goals followed and is third in shots only behind the Calgary and Florida first lines. The Red Wings are much improved this season but the Caps are -135 favorites here in one of the six total games.

This article will focus on NHL Daily Fantasy picks for both FanDuel and DraftKings. Using advanced hockey metrics, slate analysis, and line by line evaluation, this article will point you towards what we think are the best plays for the night! Good luck!

Friday 11/5 NHL Breakdown

Hey all, and welcome to November! This first Friday in November offers us a smaller, five game slate, that looks a little bit tougher at first glance. We have some weird matchups tonight, and the slate doesn’t lock until 8pm Eastern.

Goalies

John Gibson – Anaheim Ducks: The Ducks host the winless Coyotes tonight, and they should be able to handle them. The Coyotes are the worst team in the league right now, and this is a pretty solid opportunity for a win for Gibby. He is sporting a 2.57 GAA and 0.917SV% on the season, and will look to improve upon those numbers tonight. Expect a lower shot volume, limiting his upside.

Thatcher Demko – Vancouver Canucks: Vancouver hosts the Nashville Predators tonight, who are scoring just under 3 goals per game on the road in their last five road games. Vancouver at home is only giving up 1.8 goals against per game, which is a great combination for a shutdown performance for Demko.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Karel Vejmelka – Arizona Coyotes: Vejmelka has numbers similar to John Gibson, and he really hasn’t been playing poorly. Unfortunately for him, the team in front of him is very bad at defense, so he has to stand on his head. Tonight should be no different, so the upside is there from a shot total standpoint. The hope we have with this play is that he doesn’t let it get out of hand. Maybe we get lucky and he snags his first win of the season tonight. Consider Mackenzie Blackwood as a GPP pick as well, as the goalie for the New Jersey Devils makes his season debut after returning from injury.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Edmonton Oilers 1 – Leon Draisaitl/Connor McDavid/Jesse Puljujarvi/Tyson Barrie: How do we pass on these guys at this point? Edmonton has been steamrolling their opponents in the early part of the season, and tonight should be a fantastic display of hockey, as they face the New York Rangers on home ice. The Rangers come into this game allowing a measly 2 goals against per game on the road, but the Oilers have been scoring a whopping 4.33 goals per game at home. The way Draisaitl has been playing, you want to play him until the wheels fall off.

Anaheim Ducks Power Play – Ryan Getzlaf/Troy Terry/Trevor Zegras/Jamie Drysdale: The Ducks, as mentioned above, have a matchup with the worst team in the league tonight on home ice. They are in a fantastic spot and should carry some ownership, especially as people pair them with Edmonton. Because the scoring can be spread out, the power play is the best way to get access to both top lines. If Sonny Milano is in the lineup and on this unit, he is a fine piece to add to the mix in place of Troy Terry. Anaheim comes in at 5th on the power play this season, up against the Coyotes who are ranked 31st on the penalty kill.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Vancouver Canucks 2 – Bo Horvat/Tanner Pearson/Nils Hoglander/Quinn Hughes: The Canucks second line matched up against the Rangers’ top line in their last home game, and we would expect them to follow the same line matching patterns. This puts them in a fantastic upside matchup against the top line for the Nashville Predators tonight. On top of that, Jusse Saros has a 3.34 GAA on the road this season in a small sample. On home ice, the Canucks have been pretty good defensively, but have had some trouble scoring, which is why they are higher risk. They have a chance tonight to break out of that scoring funk.

Chicago Blackhawks Power Play – Jonathan Toews/Patrick Kane/Alex Debrincat/Seth Jones: Feel free to replace Alex Debrincat for Ryan Carpenter in this look. Patrick Kane, since coming back from COVID, has been playing lights out, and this team got instantly better. Toews/Carpenter have been great as well, and they get to face Eric Comrie in net tonight against the Jets. This is a nice upside play that might be forgotten about with the likes of Edmonton on the slate.

Arizona Coyotes 2 – Johan Larsson/Phil Kessel/Dmitrij Jaskin: On a slate like tonight, there will be some weird things that will happen. This line has been producing chances and shooting the puck pretty nicely so far this season, at a 36.56 shots for/60, 32.34 scoring chances for/60, 11.25 high danger chances for/60, and a 2.76 expected goals for per 60 clip. This says that the chances are there, and the opportunity could be there tonight for them to pot a couple of goals. This is the definition of risk, but if you are looking to get a little different, these rates say enough to play them on a short slate. On a slate any bigger, they would not be in play.

Honorable mentions: Winnipeg Jets 1, Los Angeles Kings Power Play, New York Rangers 1, New Jersey Devils 2

Value Options – DraftKings

Center: Jonathan Toews ($3700) – Chicago Blackhawks – Tazer is a big power play component and a big piece of the Hawks’ team still. The fact that he is only $3700 is pretty surprising, even with his limited production lately. He can still shoot the puck and any points are a bonus at this point.

Wing: Arthur Kaliyev ($3400) – Los Angeles Kings – Kaliyev spends time on the top power play, and at $3400, that is enough opportunity to give him a look

Defense: Kale Clague ($3600) – Los Angeles Kings – Clague is a great punt, but he is getting a little pricier each game. He still gets power play time and is logging around 20 minutes per game, which gives him plenty of upside for his price.

Value Options – FanDuel

Center: Ryan Johansen ($4200) – Nashville Predators – Johansen has not had the production over the last couple of seasons like he had before, but as a top line, power play center, this is a good price and spot to consider if you need to go here.

Wing: Sonny Milano ($3800) – Anaheim Ducks – Sonny has a nice value to him, IF, he is on the top power play. Keep an eye on the line rushes through the day and make sure he is on that top unit.

Defense: Tyler Myers ($3600) – Vancouver Canucks – A top pair D man logging anywhere from 19-25 minutes per game, and blocking shots each game except 1? This is a great, near minimum price for this production. He may not light up the scoreboard, but down here, we don’t need him to.

Cash Considerations – DraftKings

Leon Draisaitl – C – Edmonton Oilers

Kyle Connor – W – Winnipeg Jets

Adam Fox – D – New York Rangers

John Gibson – G – Anaheim Ducks

This article focuses on 11/4 NHL Picks for both DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbooks and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We analyze tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so that we can gain an edge on the field at large. Full rankings for each position for both sites are available below.

Thursday 11/4 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for a nine-game Thursday slate!

As visible lower down, of the nine games tonight, only two have a nine total. As a result, we are likely looking at a somewhat lower scoring slate without many obvious spots to target.

Boston One “Patrice Bergeron, David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand”DraftKings or FanDuel

The “Perfection” line has not performed up to their usual standards so far this season. However, their diminished performance to date is reflected in the price discount, Bergeron in particular. Every time I look, the money line on Boston just shoots up higher and higher and the current -265 is crazy high for NHL money line standards. I don’t know if those odds are fully merited but comparatively the DFS prices are a bargain. Of course, all three skaters feature on the top power-play unit.

Toronto One “Auston Matthews, Michael Bunting, William Nylander” – DraftKings or FanDuel

Perhaps a bit chalky “I think despite being a -120 as opposed to Boston’s -250 they still get more ownership” but we have the high-end piece in Matthews, the punt piece in Bunting, and Nylander in an elevated role. If you’re not playing this line, Tampa Bay goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy has a lot of upside potential facing shot volume with potential for the win, I clearly wouldn’t play them together.

Calgary One “Elias Lindholm, Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk” – DraftKings or FanDuel

If looking for a low-owned, late-night hammer with tournament take-down potential, look no further. It was sort of hard looking around for an off-the-wall line on this slate given how some of these teams spread out their talent. The matchup is not the best but this line has been in fine form.

11/4 NHL Game Odds and Totals

Main Slate of Games – Beginning 7 p.m. ET
