Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for the 2021-22 season.

If you are new to my articles, NHL, or WinDaily Sports then I will tell you that my articles are not going to give you the chalk plays or the obvious plays. I try to dig in and find ways for you to build lineups for GPP contests. I will always point out those top plays to help you build cash but that is not the point of this article.

Two slate Monday!

We have two slates this Monday with the first beginning at 3 PM eastern and consisting of four games while the “main” slate is a 3 gamer starting at 7:30 PM eastern. Even though the contest selection on both slates is bad I will still give you a quick rundown on my top plays from both slates.

Early Slate:

NHL DFS: Goaltenders:

Marc-Andre Fleury is the top play on this slate at goalie for me. Flower is under $8K ($7.8K) which you all know my stance on that and he has been fantastic in his last four starts. The reigning Vezina winner is 4-0 with just five goals allowed and a .959 save % in those four starts. Seattle does not pose much of a threat in my eyes and should offer a fifth straight win for the future Hall-of-Famer.

Whoever is in net for the Kings would be my number 2 pick in net on this slate. LA has been rolling of late and both goalies have been playing well. With the Kings on the front end of a back-to-back we would expect to see one goalie today and the other tomorrow, I just don’t know which will play on the road in SJ today and at home to Tampa tomorrow. Cal Petersen has been outstanding since his return from injury/COVID and has started three of four games since his Jan 8th return, winning all three and allowing just 2 goals. Jonathan Quick has won three of his last four starts allowing eight goals in those four games. The only downside here is the Kings have been stout defensively and have not been allowing shots on goal. Both goalies have only made more than 30 saves once in the last eight games.

Other Options: Kaapa Kahkonen (@ Col): I know Colorado is not generally a team we play goalies against, especially at home, but Kahkonen has been red-hot. Kahkonen has achieved the 35+ save bonus on DK twice in his last three starts and is 3-0 in those starts. I like Kahkonen as a GPP pivot off potential chalk Avalanche on Monday. Karel Vejmelka ( vs MTL)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Colorado’s top two lines are the top projected lines on this slate and will most likely be popular on such a small slate. I will most likely have a share of them, but I will also be playing Kahkonen in at least one lineup. We all have been playing these lines a lot recently so I will not waste your time breaking them down. Let’s see who else is in play on Monday afternoon.

Top Stacks:

Minnesota 1 (Kaprizov/Hartman/Zuccarello) – Colorado has been susceptible defensively of late which makes me like the Wild in this game to put up a few goals. Outside of their last game when they shut out Arizona, Colorado has allowed 15 goals in their previous four. Minnesota has scored 21 goals in their last five games so I expect goals and shots aplenty in this game. (betting tip, bet the over!!!). Outside of the Wild’s top unit, their second line should also interest you. Matt Boldy has two goals and an assist in his first three games in the NHL and is min priced. Boldy also skates on the top power-play unit with the top line so he is one of my favorite plays on this slate for those reasons.

Los Angeles 2 (Moore/Danault/Arvidsson) – This line has arguably been the Kings’ best unit of late and they are still pretty cheap as a line stack. All three are averaging over three shots on goal per game and have combined for six goals in their last five games (Danault has four). Moore has seven points during this stretch and is still just $3K on DraftKings.

Other Stacks: Arizona 1 (Crouse/Larsson/Kessel ) – Montreal has been giving up goals in bunches of late! Chicago 1 (Hagel/Reichel/Kane), San Jose 1(Balcers/Hertl/Meier), Chicago 2 (DeBrincat/Toews/Kubalik)

Now, on to the main slate!

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Ilya Sorokin and the Islanders are home to the Flyers tonight on the front end of a home and home. These two teams will play again in Philly on Tuesday. Semyon Varlamov played on Saturday against the Capitals and played exceptionally, so my guess is Sorokin plays on Monday and Varly is back in on Tuesday. Either way, both goalies are in play on both nights for me. In his last start, which was the Islanders’ first game in 12 days, Sorokin stopped 30 of 32 shots on his way to a win against New Jersey. Philadelphia has lost seven straight and has only managed to score more than two goals once in those seven games, I see that trend continuing on Monday.

Juuse Saros does have a reasonably tough matchup with St. Louis on Monday, but he is cheap ($7.5K) and has been outstanding of late. The Blues do still have a few players in COVID protocols so they may not be at full strength on Monday which would help this play as well. Since the start of December, Saros is 10-3-1 in fourteen starts with a .931 save % and just 33 goals allowed (2.35 GAA). Saros has given up two goals or less in nine of those fourteen starts as well.

Other Options: Tristan Jarry ( @ VGK), Ville Husso (vs NSH)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Teams to build around:

My teams to build around is more of a game to build around in his case. Pittsburgh is winding down their west coast swing with a game in Vegas on Monday night and it should be a high-scoring affair. Both teams are offensively proficient and I expect the over to be smashed in this one.

Pittsburgh 1 (Guentzel/Crosby/Rust): Pittsburgh will be getting Bryan Rust back from the COVID list on Monday and is expected to slot right back into his role alongside Crosby and Guentzel. In three games before going on the COVID list and coming off the injured list, Rust picked up seven goals and four assists. As long as he is feeling 100% Rust should be in line for another huge night on Monday while coming in at a cheap price tag of $5.6K.

Evan Rodrigues will now slot back down to the Pens’ second line alongside Jeff Carter and Evgeni Malkin. This line should be on your radar as well and will probably go overlooked in favor of the top line. Dmen to use: Kris Letang, Brian Dumoulin, John Marino

Vegas 1 (Marchessault/Karlsson/Smith): Until Max Pacioretty returns to the ice, I will always look to the Golden Knights’ second line as my first choice when stacking the team. They are a perfect complement to the Penguins’ top line tonight for a game stack and work should be the line that does the damage in this game for Vegas. Dmen to use: Pretty much anyone other than Ben Hutton.

Other stacks to consider:

St. Louis 2 (Kyrou/Thomas/Saad) – Dmen to use: Niko Mikkola, Justin Faulk

Philadelphia 1 (Atkinson/Giroux/Farabee) – Dmen to use: Ivan Provorov, Cam York

Nashville 1 (Forsberg- if he is back/Granlund/Duchene) – Dmen to use: Roman Josi, Dante Fabbro

New York 2 (Bellows/Nelson/Beauvillier) – Dmen to use: Noah Dobson, Adam Pelech

Friday 1/14 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back to Win Daily Sports’ Friday Night Forecheck! The NHL schedule continues to be pretty unbalanced, so after a giant, 11 game slate, we have a small 3 game slate tonight. This slate has a couple of very obvious spots, so expect heavy chalk. We will do what we can to find the low owned gems to get you to the top! Good luck!

Goalies

Kaapo Kahkonen – Minnesota Wild: The Wild host the Ducks tonight, and this is a nice looking play. The Ducks have only been scoring 1.4 goals per game over their last five away games, and Kahkonen has been decent over his last five. Especially if the Wild get some of their weapons back tonight (they should), this becomes a strong play.

Sergei Bobrovsky – Florida Panthers: The Panthers are hosting the Stars tonight, and the Stars are a tale of two teams. On home ice, they have been scoring almost FIVE goals per game over their last five home games. On the road, however, they have only been scoring 1.4 goals per game over their last five road games. On top of that, they are giving up 3.4 goals per game over their last 5 road games, making Bob the best play on the slate tonight.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – None: This slate feels pretty straightforward. You could realistically go with Darcy Kuemper (COL), but the upside there feels pretty limited. The Coyotes have been playing well recently, but they are a much better team at home than on the road. With the way that Arizona shoots, and the risk that Kuemper has brought this year, one or two goals could crack him pretty easily, so it feels like the Kuemper play is just too limited. Karel Vejmelka (ARI) just put up a 40+ save, 1 goal against win the other night against Toronto. While he is good for games like that every once in a while, visiting Colorado does not seem like a spot for him to do it again. Anthony Stolarz (ANH) and Jake Oettinger (DAL) are both on the road, and Stolarz is the better play there, so you can make a case for him, but the focus should really be on Kahkonen and Bob for the upside.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Colorado Avalanche Power Play – Nathan MacKinnon/Nazem Kadri/Valeri Nichushkin/Mikko Rantanen/Cale Makar: This, just…wow. This should absolutely be a smash spot for an already high octane unit that can handle just about any team in the league. The addition of Nichushkin makes this slightly more affordable. Expect this unit to be SUPER chalk tonight, for very good reason.

Florida Panthers Power Play – Aleksander Barkov/Sam Reinhart/Jonathan Huberdeau/Anthony Duclair/Aaron Ekblad: This unit is in a fantastic spot as well, as they take on the Stars on home ice. Barkov/Huberdeau/Ekblad is always a great trio to run from the Panthers, as they are almost always producing. The second line straight up (Sam Bennett/Anthony Duclair/Jonathan Huberdeau) is a slightly better even strength matchup, but you can get access to them via the power play.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Anaheim Ducks Power Play – Rickard Rakell/Trevor Zegras/Sonny Milano/Ryan Getzlaf/Cam Fowler: The Ducks’ power play has a very nice matchup, as they are currently ranked 5th in the league. Minnesota has been taking a bunch of penalties, so there should be ample opportunity for them tonight. They are high risk because the Ducks have been struggling to score of late, especially on the road.

Minnesota Wild 1 – Ryan Hartman/Kirill Kaprizov/Mats Zuccarello/Calen Addison: The Wild appear to be getting back their weapons from injury and COVID, so this is a great spot for them tonight. If Addison does in fact slot into the power play, he is a great value play.

Minnesota Wild 3 – Victor Rask/Kevin Fiala/Matthew Boldy: If you want to get off of a chalkier Minnesota play and still get access to them, this is a good play. Boldy has been playing well in his first few games, and this line has a decent matchup at even strength.

Colorado Avalanche 3 – Alex Newhook/JT Compher/Logan O’Connor: This third line for the Avs has been good all year, and is a little better with Aube-Kubel, but he appears to be out tonight. Even so, this is a great way to get much lower ownership on a massive total. Newhook and O’Connor are slippery and are going to be good in this league as they grow and improve. Compher slots into the second power play, so there is a good upside to playing him as well.

Honorable Mentions: ANH4, ARIPP, DAL1

Notes: This slate feels like it is going to come down to getting the MIN/ANH game correct. Getting the correct stack to go with COL/FLA will be a great approach. Another really good GPP approach is to play contrarian and fade the super obvious chalk. As we saw last night, this can work at times, and on three games, it makes sense. Just remember, fading the obvious plays is an all or nothing approach.

Thursday 1/13 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for a huge eleven-game Thursday slate!

Full Game Odds/Totals and DraftKings Rankings can be found below as well as cash game considerations for each site.

Three Favorite Lines Per Dollar

Carolina One “Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen, Seth Jarvis”

Columbus has been playing really poor defense all season and has struggled on the road and that combination leads me to think they will get smashed in Carolina. The Canes had a letdown against the seemingly impervious Florida Panthers this past weekend. Nevertheless, this Columbus team is not of the same caliber. I generally hate how these lines and the power play are set up, it’s one of my qualms with the Hurricanes. However, the top line seems like a good place to start with Aho the cornerstone and Seth Jarvis at $2,700 our value piece. The line with Nido Neidereiter, as opposed to Seth Jarvis, has six full-line goals over their last ten games, good for a tie for sixth in the NHL among lines across that span.

Calgary One Two Man”Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk plus optional Oliver Kylington power play addition”

The Flames have not had their best stretch recently but this seems like a get-right spot against a Senators team that hasn’t played in forever. Much like the Canadiens last night, they will likely be a bit rusty. While the other lines continue to do next to nothing, this Calgary top line has really solidified the Flames as a one-line team production-wise. Their nine primary line-oriented goals and 125 SATF over their last ten games, continue to lead all lines in the NHL. I left off Elias Lindholm, as the other two skaters have been doing most of the damage.

New York Rangers Two “Artemi Panarin, Ryan Strome and if extra salary savings needed Alexis Lafreniere”

This is a really cheap line that provides us with some additional value and salary savings. Strome is feeling it right now with eleven shots on goal over his last two games and the Breadman seems cheap just back from injury. It is only a matter of time before he gets hot as he won’t stay $5,700 forever and that night could be tonight. Alexis Lafreniere hasn’t done much to date but he is only $2,600 and has all the talent in the world, albeit he does not share top power-play correlation with the other two skaters listed.

It’s a seven game Tuesday!

Thanks to another postponement this 8 game slate has become a more manageable seven-game slate now. This section was supposed to be all about Filip Forsberg and the Predators again, but alas, he is in COVID protocols for another couple of days so no Forsberg Tuesday this week. Tanner Jeannot has been slotted into the Preds’ top line in Forsberg’s place with Mikael Granlund and Matt Duchene. This line is one I will be giving some definite consideration to when I am building lineups on Tuesday.

As for that game, I do like the Preds at home against an Avalanche team that is on the back end of a back-to-back and who had to travel after struggling to beat the Kraken on Monday. We actually have more games starting after 7 PM eastern tonight than we do at 7 PM, which is very rare. The game of the night is probably Toronto at Vegas and there are a couple of spots that have blowout written all over it. One that stands out to me is the Panthers hosting Vancouver who has not played since January 1st. I am usually one to advocate for Thatcher Demko, but Floriday at home is not someplace to mess with goalies.

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Juuse Saros ( vs Colorado)

Saros has been on a roll of late and I know this play is risky and most of you will probably go elsewhere, but hear me out. In his last four starts, Saros has been in that night’s perfect lineup each time and has allowed just seven goals. Colorado is not nearly the same team on the road as they are at home with an 8-6-1 record on the road as opposed to 14-2-1 at home. Saros should be in for a huge workload as well with the Avs averaging nearly 35 shots on goal per game. Saros is also only $7.2K on DraftKings tonight which is another reason I want to play him. As I said, I know this seems risky, but in GPP’s that is what you look for, low owned, high upside plays and that is Saros tonight.

Andrei Vasilevskiy ( @ Buffalo)

Vasilevskiy is more of your “safe” play on the road in Buffalo. Coming into the night, Buffalo has lost eight of ten and has only scored three goals or more three times in that stretch. Vasilevskiy should be in line for a win on Tuesday, but the save bonus is unlikely and he will need to allow just 2 goals or less to sniff value at his $8.5K salary. I probably won’t have any exposure to the Lightning netminder but he is someone who should provide stability and guaranteed points at the position tonight.

Other Options: Tristan Jarry (@ Anaheim), Hill/Reimer ( vs Detroit), Marc-Andre Fleury ( @ Columbus), Alex Nedeljkovic ( @ San Jose)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Teams to build around:

Pittsburgh Penguins

I know the Penguins hit a small speed bump and had their 10 game win streak snapped in Dallas on Saturday, but that just means they can start a new one on Tuesday. Pittsburgh will be without the red-hot Bryan Rust again, but there is a good chance that Evgeni Malkin will be back in uniform on Tuesday. Malkin will be a game-time call, but all indications point to the three-time Stanley Cup-winning center being back in the lineup. If Malkin is indeed back, he should be centering the Pens’ second line with Kasperi Kapanen and Jeff Carter. This line is only $13.2K on DK, which for a potent second line is not too expensive.

While I do like that second line, I would prefer to play the Penguins top unit as my stack to build around. Sidney Crosby has been playing some of his best hockey all season during the Penguins’ previous 11 games with three goals and 13 assists during that stretch. Jake Guentzel has points in his previous 17 games with 15 goals and 11 assists during that span. Lastly, Evan Rodrigues continues his career season with seven goals and seven assists during the team’s last 11 games. This line is expensive, but on a slate with Colorado, Toronto, and Tampa Bay I expect the Penguins to go overlooked and be a potential late-night hammer for you on Tuesday. Dmen to use: Kris Letang, Brian Dumoulin (super cheap and has been on fire!)

Florida Panthers

Another team that is rolling right now, especially at home, is the Florida Panthers. After a couple of roads games (where they still scored 9 goals in two games), the Panthers come home where they have won four straight amassing 24 goals in those 4 games. Yes, you read that correctly, the Panthers are averaging 6 goals per game at home in their last four games there. That is why it is hard to not want to roll out Panther stacks on Tuesday night, especially against a team that has not played a game in 10 days. I could see this one get ugly, early, for the Canucks as they try to get their legs under them in the first period.

Floridas’ top line is always a good line to stacks, but my preference on this slate would be to use their second unit of Sam Bennett, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Anthony Duclair. While they are expensive they are not nearly as expensive as some of the top lines that will be popular on this slate (including the Penguins) but their production can match or surpass those lines. Huberdeau is riding a five-game point streak during which he has scored three goals and added 10 assists. Anthony Duclair has five goals and three assists in the Panthers’ last six games as well. Sam Bennett is back from his three-game suspension and did have two goals and an assist in his two games before that suspension.

Florida also has some good depth scoring in Anton Lundell and Frank Vatrano on the third line as well. Dmen to use: Brandon Montour, Aaron Ekblad, Gustav Forsling

Best of the rest:

Toronto Maple Leafs L1: Michael Bunting/Auston Matthews/Ondrej Kase. Dmen to use: TJ Brodie, Morgan Rielly

Tampa Bay Lightning L1: Nikita Kucherov/Brayden Point/Ondrej Palat. Dmen to use: Victor Hedman, Mikhail Sergachev

Detroit Red Wings L1: Tyler Bertuzzi/Dylan Larkin/Lucas Raymond. Dmen to use: Moritz Seider, Filip Hronek

Columbus Blue Jackets L1: Gustav Nyquist/Boone Jenner/Patrik Laine. Dmen to use: Adam Boqvist, Zach Werenski

Vegas Golden Knights L2: Jonathan Marchessault/William Karlsson/Reilly Smith. Dmen to use: Shea Theodore, Brayden McNabb

Value Stacks:

Tampa Bay L3: Maroon/Bellemare/Perry

Nashville L3: Trenin/Sissons/Cousins

Buffalo L1: Cozens/Asplund/Hinostroza

Chicago L3: Entwistle/Dach/Kurashev

Another smal slate Monday

This week we have a three-game slate on Monday night featuring a few of the best line stacks in the league. Monday’s first game, Boston @ Washington is the premier matchup on the slate. After that game, we have Seattle traveling to Colorado in what should ( I emphasize SHOULD) be a pretty cut and dry win for the Avs. In the late start, the Rangers are in Los Angeles to tangle with the Kings.

All of these games are intriguing fantasy-wise and I believe ownership should be spread out because of the variety of high-priced stacks. For me, there is only one goalie on this slate that has the upside we want in our goalies.

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Alexander Georgiev ( @ Los Angeles)

Last week in this same spot I told you I did not want to play Georgiev, but a week later he is the best option. Los Angeles is a team that we know shoots the puck, a lot. They are top 5 in the league in shots on goal while ranking 23rd in goals scored. I know they have picked up six goals and four goals in two of their last three games, but those were against Philadelphia and Detroit, two of the league’s worst teams defensively. The Rangers also allow a good amount of shots on goal per game themselves, 32.0, but have had great goaltending, especially this past week. In their last four games, New York has allowed 1 goal or less three times. Two of those games were against Tampa Bay and Edmonton, two of the highest-scoring offenses in the NHL.

Other Options: Darcy Kuemper ( vs Seattle), Jeremy Swayman/Linus Ullmark ( @ Washington)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Teams to build around:

Colorado Avalanche

Whenever you talk about playing Colorado, the obvious line stack is going to be the top line and it’s no different on Monday. On a small slate like this in the perceived easiest matchup, I would expect this line to be the highest owned stack on the slate.

One way to get different would be to use either Cale Makar or Nazem Kadri in place of MacKinnon (the highest-priced skater on the slate). Kadri has been one of the biggest surprises this season and is currently riding an 11 game point-scoring streak. During this streak, Kadri has 5 goals and 14 assists as well as averaging 3.27 shots on goal per game. One thing to note about Kadri, a PP stack including him does not seem like the way to go. While he has been hot, he has only 2 power-play points during his 11 game streak. Because of this my preference will be to stack Kadri/Makar with Logan O’Connor. Yes, I prefer O’Connor over Burakovsky right now. O’Connor has more shots on goal, blocked shots, and is averaging more ice time then Burkovsky over the Avs last five games. Other Def plays: Samuel Girard, Erik Johnson.

New York Rangers

After losing four of five the Rangers have now won four of their last five and have scored four goals in each of their wins. On top of playing some of their best hockey of the season, the Rangers will also be getting Artemi Panarin back in the lineup. Panarin missed four games due to COVID but is expected back on Monday night. Panarin is priced cheap at $5.9K on Monday and I will assume he slots back into his spot on the second line with Ryan Strome and most likely Barclay Goodrow. If that is the way the Rangers choose to play Bread Man, then this stack is cheap ($12.9K) and one of my favorites on the slate.

Goodrow is $2.8K on DK and has six points in his last five games (3 goals, 3 assists) which are the two reasons I hope he stays on line 2. Obviously the top line is in play for the Rangers, but that is the way I believe most people will go. Adam Fox is ONLY $5.8K on DK on Monday which basically screams play him! After Fox, Jacob Trouba is $4.4K and has hit the SOG or blocked shot bonus in each of the last three games. Ryan Lindgren is probably the best cheap option for the Rangers. Lindgren is coming off a two-goal game on Saturday but he does more than put up real points (only 7 in 33 games), he will also block shots and take shots.

Best of the rest

Boston Bruins L2: David Pastrnak/Erik Haula/Taylor Hall: This line is clicking and has combined for six goals and seven assists in their last five. (Fav Dmen to use: Matt Grzelcyk, Mike Reilly)

Seattle Kraken L2/PP: Calle Jarnkrok/Yanni Gourde/Ryan Donato: I like mixing Donato in to a L2 mini stack in place of Blackwell. Donato has three goals in his last five and plays with Gourde on the second PP unit. Jarnkrok is the Kraken’s hottest skater and has five points in his last five and plays on the top PP unit. (Fav Dmen to use: Carson Soucy, Vince Dunn)

Los Angeles Kings L2: Trevor Moore/Phillip Danault/Viktor Arvidsson: Good cheap pivot if you are fading Georgiev. This line has been outplaying their top line and comes in under $12K. (Fav Dmen to use: Drew Doughty, Sean Durzi)

Washington Capitals L1: Alex Ovechkin/Evgeny Kuznetsov/Tom Wilson: Expensive and they’ve been ice cold, but you could say they’e due for a big game. (Fav Dmen to use: John Carlson, Trevor van Riemsdyk)

Friday 1/7 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back to Win Daily Sports’ Friday Night Forecheck! On this first Friday of the new year, we have a small 2 game slate. These can be fun, but they can also be heartbreaking at times! It is totally up to you how to approach this slate. You can definitely do the 2-gamer, or you can break it up and run some showdown lineups for each game. Either way, we will do our best to guide you into the right plays. Good luck!

Since this article was written prior to some important news breaking, there will be updates listed below in bold italics. As usual, it is always best to keep an eye on news all the way up until lock, as we may end up with more news breaking.

Goalies

Antti Raanta Frederik Andersen – Carolina Hurricanes: The Canes host the Flames tonight, and they are in a good spot with the Flames on the back end of a traveling back to back. In those situations, targeting the home goalie is usually a good payoff, and tonight should be no different. The Flames are definitely a little scary, but the shot upside is there and there is ample opportunity for Carolina to win. Andersen is likely to get the start tonight, and that makes this play even better, even though he could be chalky.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Jordan Binnington – St. Louis Blues: The Blues host the Capitals tonight in what should be an interesting matchup. Binnington is usually a tough pill to swallow, but the truth is, the Blues have been playing well on home ice, giving up under 2 goals against per game over their last five home games. As of 4:15pm, Ville Husso is projected to get the start for the Blues, and is also still in a good spot for GPP. He becomes a little riskier, but is worth a look if in fact he suits up over Binnington.

The Others – Dan Vladar (CGY) Jacob Markstrom and Ilya Samsonov (WSH): The reason all four goalies are listed is because, on a 2 game slate, it makes sense to just correlate your lineups with your stacks. When stacking a team, you are basically saying that they will win. This is not ALWAYS optimal, but it makes sense. Frankly, all four goalies are risky, but as mentioned above, Raanta feels the safest. Don’t be afraid to be different with these two either, though.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Carolina Hurricanes Power Play – Sebastian Aho/Vincent Trocheck/Teuvo Teravainen/Martin Necas/Tony DeAngelo: The Canes top two lines are in decent spots, which is a good time to target the power play unit. While the power play matchup is not amazing, playing this unit gets you access to scoring up and down the lineup, which is a good approach in this matchup.

St. Louis Blues 2 – Robert Thomas/Vladimir Tarasenko/Jordan Kyrou/Scott Perunovich Robert Thomas/Brayden Schenn/Jordan Kyrou/Justin Faulk: The Blues’ second line has a VERY nice matchup tonight against the Washington 2 line. These guys have been rolling, as well, so there should be decent ownership on them. Running Perunovich with them gets you access to the second power play unit, and feel free to add in Brayden Schenn as another power play piece. Tarasenko and Perunovich were added to the COVID list, so they are of course not in play. With that news, this line is still squarely in play, and even more appealing with Kyrou and Schenn alongside Thomas.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Washington Capitals 1 – Evgeny Kuznetsov/Alex Ovechkin/Tom Wilson Garnet Hathaway/John Carlson: The Caps have a nice looking matchup against the Blues and Binnington. This top line for the Caps should have a matchup with O’Reilly’s line in a plus matchup. Expect ownership to be pretty high on these guys tonight.

Carolina Hurricanes 3 – Jordan Staal/Jesperi Kotkaniemi/Martin Necas: This is a play that starts to head into risky/deep GPP territory, but this is the type of play that can take down those contests on a small slate. CAR3 should be matched up against the second line for the Flames tonight, and will still be up against Vladar, who is a backup to Markstrom and has not played in a while.

Other Deep GPP lines to Consider:

Washington 3 (Nic Dowd/Carl Hagelin/Garnet Hathaway Brett Leason) Leason was added to this line after Hathaway moved up to the top line with Backstrom out

St. Louis 3 (Ivan Barbashev/Brayden Schenn/Pavel Buchnevich) (Oskar Sundqvist/Brandon Saad/David Perron) – Line shuffling due to COVID – this one isn’t as appealing as it was with Buchnevich and Schenn, but it could work.

Calgary 3 (Dillon Dube/Andrew Mangiapane/Milan Lucic) (Sean Monahan/Dillon Dube/Andrew Mangiapane) – Line shuffled around just a touch and seems a little more appealing with Monahan in the middle.

Value Options – DraftKings

Center: Sean Monahan ($2800) – Calgary Flames – third line, but slots into the top power play

Wing: Seth Jarvis ($3100) – Carolina Hurricanes

Defense: Oliver Kylington ($3200) – Calgary Flames

Value Options – FanDuel

Center: Jordan Staal ($3700) – Carolina Hurricanes

Wing: Brandon Saad ($5100) – St. Louis Blues

Defense: Rasmus Andersson ($4900) – Calgary Flames

Cash Considerations – DraftKings

Cash is not recommended on a two game slate

This article focuses on 1/6 NHL Picks for both DraftKings Sportsbook and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We analyze tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so that we can gain an edge on the field at large. Full rankings for each position for both sites are available below.

Thursday 1/6 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for a huge eleven-game Thursday slate!

Full Game Odds/Totals and DraftKings Rankings can be found below as well as cash game considerations for each site.

Three Favorite Lines Per Dollar

New Jersey One “Jack Hughes/Jesper Bratt/Damon Severson Three Man”

Jack Hughes is finally putting it all together and seems underpriced on DraftKings at $5,800. Jesper Bratt makes for the ideal pairing given his correlation on the first power-play unit. His $5,200 price tag makes the combination very affordable. The Devils are -130 home favorites against a struggling Columbus team in a game with a six total. As far as Severson he is cheap at $3,900 and shares correlation on the first unit as well as top power-play where he is the quarterback. Overall, the trio provides us with some solid value.

Tampa Bay One “Brayden Point/Ondrej Palat Two Man”

This line is another that seems underpriced. They may get overlooked a lot for flashier lines, but as we saw the other night, they can also win tournaments. At $6,600 Brayden Point fills a center slot and Palat allows us some savings on the wing at $5,300. Both skaters share a correlation on Tampa’s top power-play unit. While Calgary is not an ideal target as a decent defensive squad, traveling to Florida is not ideal for them. The Panthers just showed us the possibilities against the Flames.

Colorado One “Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen Two Man”

I have some recency bias here having just played them when they laid an egg against the Blackhawks. However, I would be remiss to not mention them, at home, in a game with the highest total on the night, set at 6.5. More likely than not they will be the chalk, despite the size of the slate. On that basis, I think you can fade and feel fine about it, but of course, if your build leaves you with the extra money, this two-man stack isn’t a bad way to spend it!

On Tuesdays we play Forsberg!

Usually, I don’t start off my articles talking about a player, but Filip Forsberg is one of the hottest players in the league right now. In his last five games, Forsberg has seven points (4 goals 3 assists) and is in a matchup with Vegas who is coming off a game with Winnipeg where they gave up five goals. Forsberg is also underpriced on DK in my opinion at $6.5K as well, on FanDuel he is priced appropriately at $7.5K I think. There are a lot of spots to pay up for on this slate, but spending some salary on a Forsberg/Josi mini-stack might be one of the best spots. If you want to go cheaper, Alexander Carrier is a solid cheap D punt but also using the Preds top line of Forsberg, Matt Duchene, and Mikael Granlund works too.

Elsewhere on this slate, we have Colorado in a matchup with Chicago where they could easily put up 5 or 6 goals. Tampa Bay is in Columbus with Joonas Korpisalo returning after from injury and he has been bad, especially against Tampa in his career. Korp has a 2-4-1 record with an abysmal .885 save % and 3.65 GAA. With there being a lot of high-priced stacks we want to play, we need to find value and on this eight-game slate, there is plenty to be had! Let’s get into the plays!

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

John Gibson ( vs Philadelphia)

Gibson has a home matchup with one of the worst offenses in the league (sorry Jon Love, but it’s true haha) and he is coming off three straight strong performances. Anaheim lost their last game to Colorado, but Gibson stopped 32 of 35 shots in that game. Prior to that game, Gibson had two more great games, both in losses as well. Gibson hit the 35+ plus save bonus in both (DK) stopping 42 and 35 shots. Philadephia is in the middle of the pack in shots on goal (31.19 per game) and Anaheim allows 32.3 per game. Philly also ranks 26th in goals for (2.66 P/G). You all know by now I take any chance I can get to write up Gibby, but tonight it isn’t my biased that led me here, the numbers did.

Juuse Saros ( @ Vegas)

Vegas is one of the top offenses in the league, but without their top two players in Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone in the lineup, it makes them a lot less worrisome. Saros has been solid in his last five averaging over 30 saves per game and allowing just 1.8 goals per game. Another reason Saros is so high on my list for Tuesday is his salary. With Vegas being shorthanded and based on his recent performances I expected Saros to be priced higher industry-wide, but he isn’t.

Other Options: Andrei Vasilevskiy ( @ Columbus), Darcy Kuemper ( @ Chicago), Carter Hart ( @ Anaheim – if Zegras and Getzlaf are still out), Jacob Markstrom (@ Florida)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Teams to build around:

Colorado Avalanche

There is a chance that Marc-Andre Fleury is back in net for the Blackhawks on Tuesday, but that doesn’t change how I feel about the Avs. Colorado has the three top projected players tonight in Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Nazim Kadri. These three will cost you a pretty penny, but there is enough value on this slate to make it work. This is a power-play stack that is up against the 27th ranked penalty kill from Chicago. Cale Makar and Gabriel Landeskog make up the rest of that unit. There are plenty of ways to get different with Colorado outside of this unit. Using Kadri with Makar and either Andrei Burakovsky or JT Compher as a line 2 stack is one way to be different. On defense, other than Makar, Devon Toews and Samuel Girard are cheaper options.

Boston Bruins

Colorado is the obvious top stack, and yeah I did mention Tampa in the open, but Boston could be completely overlooked and come in at very low ownership on this slate. Boston has done their annual mid-season line shuffling and moved David Pastrnak to the second line and moved Craig Smith to the top line. Smith has been performing well of late and is cheap. Using Smith with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand makes this stack much easier to use. New Jersey has allowed nearly four goals per game in their last five so Boston should have no problem getting on the board tonight.

There is some other value with Boston as well. The Bruins’ third line of Jake DeBrusk, Charlie Coyle, and Nick Foligno makes for a good value stack. You can also go with Pasta and his new linemates, Erik Haula and Taylor Hall but I would prefer the third line for the savings.

On defense, Charlie McAvoy is the Bruins’ best option but he is expensive. All three of Brandon Carlo, Matt Grzelcyk, and Mike Reilly are all over $2K less than McAvoy but can, on a good night, match his production.

Top Value Stack:

Nashville Predators

I know I already talked a lot about Nashville in the open, but they are really one of my favorite teams on this slate, and their third line is a tremendous value. Forsberg is one of the hottest players in the league, then Tanner Jeannot might be the next hottest player. Jeannot has ten points in his last ten games with five goals and five assists and is coming off of a two-goal game on Saturday. Jeannot skates with Colton Sisson and Yakov Trenin who have eight points and five points respectively in their last ten.

Other Value Options:

  • Florida PP2: Anton Lundell/Frank Vatrano/Brandon Montour
  • Detroit 2: Rabby Fabbri/Pius Suter/Filip Zadina
  • Columbus 1: Patrik Laine/Cole Sillinger/Jakub Voracek
  • Calgary 3: Andrew Mangiapane/Dillon Dube/Milan Lucic
  • San Jose 2: Jonathan Dahlen/Toma Hertl/Noah Gregor
Don’t sleep on these stacks:

Calgary 1: Johnny Gaudreau/Elias Lindholm/Matthew Tkachuk

Florida 2: Jonathan Huberdeau/Anton Lundell/Anthony Duclair

New Jersey 1: Yegor Sharangovich/Jack Hughes/Jesper Bratt

Winnipeg 1: Paul Stastny/Mark Scheifele/Nikolaj Ehlers

Vegas 1: Jonathan Marchessault/William Karlsson/Reilly Smith

Detroit 1: Lucas Raymond/Dylan Larkin/Tyler Bertuzzi

San Jose 1: Alexander Barabanov/Logan Couture/Timo Meier

Value defenseman:

Jacob Middleton (SJ), Jake McCabe (Chi), Adam Boqvist (CBJ – Should see a big uptick in minutes with Werenski out), Noah Hanifin (Cgy), Jonas Siegenthaler (NJ)

Monday Night Showdown

Edmonton continues its trip through the Tri-State area here on the East Coast with a visit to Madison Square Garden to take on the Rangers. This game seems like the type of game where we ignore goaltending and just stack up the skaters. Let’s just get into it!

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

None

No, really, I don’t think playing either goalie who starts is worth it on this slate. If you want to be different and take a chance on Alexander Georgiev, I get it. Edmonton shoots a lot, so the save bonus is a possibility on DK.

Now there is a caveat here. If Edmonton elects to go with Stuart Skinner in net then I have some interest on DK because of his salary. DraftKings priced him at $5,000, which is the minimum price for goalies on showdowns. Skinner could be worth a shot for the potential bonuses and his cheap price which allows some of the high-priced players in your lineups. This is a possibility because Mike Smith is potentially out injured again for the Oilers.

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are the top plays on this slate, but to fit them with the top Rangers, like Mika Zibanejad, Adam Fox, and Chris Kreider we need to find some value.

Kailer Yamamoto: Yamamoto is back in the good graces of Dave Tippett and is on the Oilers’ second line with Draisaitl and Devin Shore (a decent GPP punt). As well as playing on line 2, Yamamoto is skating on the team’s top PP unit. In his last four games, Yamamoto has five points.

Dryden Hunt: Hunt has only one point this season, but he is a cheap option that will get you the top guys you want. Hunt is not totally useless, he can pick up a couple of shots on goal and blocked shots.

Libor Hajek: Similar to Hunt, Hajek is not going to light up the score sheet with real points, but he can be a great punt play. Hajek does have an assist in his last five, but he is more likely to pick up a few shots or blocked shots. I don’t love this play, but Hajek has the most upside in the $2K price range that will allow you to get McDavid/Draisaitl/Yamamoto with two of the top Rangers.

Quik Hits:

Jesse Puljujarvi/Zach Hyman: Both play on Line 1 with McDavid making them good mid-tier options.

Ryan Strome: Strome has two goals and three assists in his last six games. Strome also centers the Rangers’ top PP unit.

Barclay Goodrow: Goodrow has two goals and an assist in the Rangers’ last two games. Goodrow and Strome pair up nicely for a two-man line 2 stack as well.

Evan Bouchard: He is a little pricey, but has big upside. Bouchard has four points in his last five games to go with 14 shots on goal and 10 blocked shots.

If Mikko Koskinen starts for Edmonton, my plan will be to play 4-5 Rangers with either McDavid or Draisaitl. Koskinen has been terrible in his last five starts. Koskinen has a 0-4-1 record with a .886 save % and is averaging four goals against per game.

Friday 12/31 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back to Win Daily Sports’ Friday Night Forecheck! Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone! We hope you have a great time tonight ringing in 2022 with your friends and loved ones! Please be safe and smart tonight. Here’s wishing you and yours a very happy and healthy new year. Maybe we can ring in ’22 with some green!

A couple of notes before we get started – this slate starts at 1pm Eastern and runs throughout the day on DraftKings. On FanDuel, there is only a 2 game main slate that starts at 7pm Eastern. Because of this, plus the COVID situations, it is absolutely IMPERATIVE that you keep up with the news. The games in the afternoon will be over by the time the evening games start, so be sure to keep an eye on all of your news sources through the day.

Goalies

Laurent Brossoit – Vegas Golden Knights: The Knights face the Ducks at home tonight, and the Ducks have been terrible on the road of late, scoring just 1.8 goals per game, converting a measly 5.8% of their shots. Brossoit has been solid, but he isn’t perfect. Expect him to give up a couple, especially with the Knights dealing yet again with health issues, but he should be considered a ‘safe’ play.

Andrei Vasilevskiy – Tampa Bay Lightning: Vas should be returning from a COVID protocol stint, as the Lightning host the Rangers. The Lightning are on a back-to-back, but the game was against their neighbor, the Panthers, so the travel really should not affect them. They did, however, get absolutely smoked, so the Lightning should have something to prove tonight. The return of Vasilevskiy should be a nice boost to the club, and what’s even better is the shot volume should be there for upside.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – John Gibson – Anaheim Ducks: This pick is interesting, as the Ducks travel to Vegas to take on the Knights. The reasoning behind this pick is simple – the Knights are banged up. Outside of the second line, they should struggle to score. The worry here is that Gibson on the road is not as good as he is at home. If the Ducks can shut down that second line, then this could be a sneaky spot for a Ducks win. If he starts, he is worth a look, but if Stolarz gets the nod, then this spot becomes a lot less appealing. Consider a pivot to Igor Shesterkin as a GPP option. Mike Smith can also be considered, and carries some risk because he may not be 100% recovered from his injury.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Washington Capitals 1 – Evgeny Kuznetsov/Alex Ovechkin/Tom Wilson/John Carlson: The Caps have a FANTASTIC matchup tonight against the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings match the Larkin line to the opposing top line, and that sets this line up for a potentially huge night. The entire Caps lineup is in a good spot, so consider a power play mix n match with these guys. They should carry ownership, but it could be surprisingly limited since they are the late game on the slate.

Edmonton Oilers Power Play – Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Zach Hyman/Tyson Barrie: The Oilers head to New Jersey to take on the Devils in the afternoon game, and that is a great spot for this unit. Stacking the power play gets you access to the top two lines, who should see the depth lines for Jersey at even strength. We all know how lethal this unit can be, and today should be no different.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

New Jersey Devils 3 – Dawson Mercer/Andreas Johnsson/Janne Kuokkanen/Damon Severson: Right on the other side of the Edmonton game, we have this very intriguing matchup. This third line should take on the Draisaitl line at even strength, which sets them up very nicely. The Draisaitl line is giving up 12.78 high danger chances against per 60, while this line generates 17.26 high danger chances for per 60. Edmonton has been known to give up goals, and this line will be overlooked. From a narrative standpoint, afternoon games can get a little weird, so with Edmonton traveling East for an early game, this is a very interesting spot.

Vegas Golden Knights 2 – William Karlsson/Jonathan Marchessault/Reilly Smith/Dylan Coghlan: As mentioned earlier, the Knights are banged up. Because of this, the second line is going to have to take on the bulk of the scoring responsibility. They have a decent matchup against the Ducks, and Vegas loves playing on home ice.

Tampa Bay Lightning Power Play – Steven Stamkos/Brayden Point/Alex Killorn/Ondrej Palat/Victor Hedman: The Lightning play host to the Rangers tonight, and they should be energized with the (hopeful) return of Vasilevskiy. On top of that, losing badly to the Panthers should give them something to prove, so they could come out on fire against the Rangers. The other school of thought is that they are tired, Vas is tired and/or rusty, and they end up putting up another dud, which is exactly why they are high risk. You can definitely make a decision between the Lightning and the Rangers in this spot, but based on recent data, the Lightning edge them out a bit. Either way, this game should be high event, and it is likely that you will need some pieces from this game. Note – if Vasilevskiy does NOT go, then this spot becomes the Rangers, especially if Lagace or a different backup that isn’t Elliott gets the nod.

Honorable mentions: ANH2, WSH3, NYRPP, DET1

Value Options – DraftKings

Center: Ross Colton ($2700) – Tampa Bay Lightning – top line value alongside Stamkos and Palat

Wing: Evgenii Dadonov ($3500) – Vegas Golden Knights – make sure he is active, but he cleared COVID protocol, and with Pacioretty out, he could move to the top line

Defense: Damon Severson ($3600) – New Jersey Devils – he has been logging heavy minutes, and at $3600, his production is plenty to pay off

Value Options – FanDuel

Center: Ross Colton ($5000) – Tampa Bay Lightning

Wing: Tom Wilson ($5300) – Washington Capitals

Defense: Moritz Seider ($5400) – Detroit Red Wings

Cash Considerations – DraftKings

Leon Draisaitl – C- Edmonton Oilers

Alex Ovechkin – W – Washington Capitals

Victor Hedman – D – Tampa Bay Lightning

Laurent Brossoit – G – Vegas Golden Knights

Cash Considerations – FanDuel

It is NOT recommended to play cash lineups on FanDuel, as it is only a 2 game slate.
