Walker Buehler

If you are trying to save money on DFS Pitching tonight you may veer towards the Cubs-Pirates game, where two underachieving guys who were regarded as aces in past seasons square off and still have some apparent appeal, while certainly diminished. But I am avoiding Yu Darvish ($8600 on DraftKings) and Chris Archer in this one. The Pirates are actually leading MLB in batting over the past week. Darvish has allowed nine runs in his past two starts and at least four runs in three of his past four outings. Archer has allowed four runs in four of his past seven starts, and may be the better play of the two, but I am not risking him personally against a team that is fourth in the N.L. in homers. Archer has allowed 18 HRs so far this season.

Chris Sale seems to be the obvious top DFS Pitching play at $11,800 tonight, but as Jason Mezrahi pointed out on today’s Win Daily podcast, it is going to be too challenging to roster Sale and then be able to utilize the bats you want from the Astros-Rockies matchup in Coors Field. If you do want to get off the Coors line, though, and consider stacks with lesser priced bats such as the Reds or Phillies, then you may be able to find a way to go with Sale.

If you want to save some money in DFS Pitching tonight forhitting, then Danny Duffy ($7100) may be your answer. Cleveland is 28thin team batting over the past week and now may be a good time for Duffy tocatch them at home. Jason will be very happy to see me endorsing Duffy after Ihave given him so much of a hard time for recommending him in the past. But as erraticas Duffy can be, he will save you some salary tonight if you want those Coorsbats. Duffy has allowed three earned runs or less in three of his last fourstarts so I will risk him as the GPP play.

Cal Quantrill ($5000) is returning to the San Diego rotationto actually try and help the Padres avoid a home sweep by the Giants. Quantrill’sERA as a starter is 5.23 and the Giants have won three straight games whilescoring in double digits each time. But if you want to make a bold DFS Pitchingmove to save some cash, we have seen the San Francisco lineup flame out oftenthis season.

If you want to pivot off Sale and still have a top DFSPitching option, especially for cash games, Walker Buehler is at $10,900 as theDodgers host Arizona. He had allowed four earned runs in his previous fourstarts before his last outing, which was a trip to Coors Field. Buehler is 3-0with a 3.05 ERA at home.

Monkey Knife Fight Pick of the Day

I covered the Cubs-Pirates matchup in the DFS Pitching section, and it’s apparent I am not a fan of each pitcher. Considering how the Pirates are hitting recently, and the potent Cubs lineup presents longball threats against Archer, I’ll take both of the unders here. I believe both starters will get chased before they get the opportunities to reach the strikeout thresholds displayed below. Play these and more MLB Props now and get 100 percent bonus!

We had a 10-game slate for Thursday June 27. Some lesser known players made huge impacts while other marquee names did not have good games. All points and dollar amounts are from DraftKings.

Winners

Ariel Jurado ($6,700)

Jurado pitched excellently against the Detroit Tigers yesterday. He went seven shutout innings and gave up six hits, a walk and four strikeouts. Jurado pitched well against a struggling team and had a good outing, but do not expect him to do the same thing his next time up in the rotation.

Jurado’s Outlook

Ariel Jurado continued the Rangers’ win streak and bounced back after back-to-back rough outings. His next outing is slated for Tuesday night against the Angels. The Angels are beginning to get healthy and have one of the better lineups when every one is there. Fade Jurado in his next outing.

Joe Musgrove ($5,300)

Joe Musgrove had a great game against the Houston Astros yesterday, throwing six shutout innings and gave up nine hits and five strikeouts. Musgrove has been shaky for most of the past seven start. Musgrove should be sidelined for his next outing.

Musgrove’s Outlook

Musgrove now had back-to-back quality starts after yesterday’s outing. Even though the Astros are struggling, they have a feared lineup that could haunt any opposing pitcher. Musgrove’s next scheduled start is Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs in Pittsburgh. The Cubs are an excellent hitting team and make Joe Musgrove a risky play for his next start.

Losers

Max Kepler ($4,900)

It’s difficult to go hitless when you have eight at-bats but Max Kepler did so yesterday against the Tampa Bay Rays. In half of his at-bats, he ended up striking out. He should get going starting tonight with an easier opposing pitching staff to go up against.

Kepler’s Outlook

Kepler is now 4-for-28 with five strikeouts in his last seven games. Kepler is up to 52 strikeouts in 73 games, so the strikeout number in yesterday’s game was definitely an outlier. Kepler and the Twins head to the south side of Chicago to play the White Sox. Chicago has the sixth-highest batting average against with .266 so with Kepler occupying the top of the order, expect him to get a couple of hits.

Walker Buehler ($8,900)

Buehler had his worst start of the season last night against the Colorado Rockies. He went 5.2 innings and gave up seven runs on 13 hits, which were both career highs. He also had a walk and four punchouts. This was the second consecutive start against the Rockies, where he pitched a complete game. This was the worst start of Buehler’s career but the game was also played in Coors Field.

Buehler’s Outlook

It seemed a combination of familiarity and Coors Field affected Buehler last night. The 13 hits allowed was equal to the amount given up in his previous 31 innings. His next scheduled start is Wednesday night at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Buehler should walk right into your lineup for his next start.

Injury Update

Yankees’ General Manager Brian Cashman said today that he does not expect Giancarlo Stanton to return until August. Stanton was placed on the 10-day IL with a PCL strain.

Kevin Kiermaier of the Tampa Bay Rays left yesterday’s game with right lower leg tightness. He is listed as day-to-day and doesn’t expect to miss more than today’s game.

Trevor Story tested out his sprained right thumb in batting practice and fielding drills yesterday. Both he and manager Bud Black have not ruled out a potential rehab stint for the Rockies’ slugger.

Scott Engel and Pro Wrestler and DFS expert Matt Striker are featured in the 6/27 MLB DFS Podcast. Listen to get caught up on who they are planning to play this afternoon and tonight. They break down both the early and main slates, where quality pitching is more scarce than usual.

Should You Use Sandy Alcantara?

Today’s DFS Podcast helps you make tough decisions while having some fun along the way. While the top starting pitchers on each slate seem clear, trying to mine for value or trusting a second pitcher on a site like DraftKings will be a challenge. Again, we have a day with no major weather issues. CLE, DET and CHC all have minor weather issues. Very warm in TEX so the ball should carry well.

Upper Tier Arms

Stephen Strasburg, Nationals at Padres ($11,500 FD, $10,600 DK): We just saw what Mad Max did to the Padres on Saturday night. We can use the same stats to recommend Strasburg this afternoon. This is the fifth time in that he will pitch in his hometown of San Diego. He is 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA in his previous four starts at Petco Park. Strasburg’s high floor makes him cash safe on both sites.

Walker Buehler, Dodgers at Giants ($11,300 FD, $10,200 DK): A very nice price on DK, making him cash worthy on that site, while on FD he is more of a GPP option. Buehler pitches in the best park for pitchers against a weak lineup. He is coming off his best performance of the season when his fastball was effective, he mixed his pitches well, and he racked up 11 strikeouts in a victory against the D-backs.

Middle Tier Arms

Chris Paddack, Nationals at Padres ($9,000 FD, $10,000 DK): Paddack is a tremendous pitcher at home. In 36 innings pitched at home, he has only given up 23 hits and 10 earned runs. He has struck out 43 batters in that span with only four walks. His batting average against is only .177. Especially on FD with that price, he is cash worthy. There is some debate on whether he will pitch or not so make sure you check on that.

Jake Odorizzi, Twins at Tigers ($9,800 FD, $10,900 DK): Really a cash game consideration with that discount on FD, he is the AL ERA leader at 1.96. He faces a weak opponent in Detroit. He has held opponents scoreless in six of his last seven starts, dating back to April 29 and while no earned runs is a lot to ask, pitching a great game is not.

Robbie Ray, Diamondbacks at Blue Jays ($8,800 FD, $10,600 DK): Another FD cash worthy pitcher, Ray lasted a season high seven innings in his last start against the Dodgers. He recorded a loss in that game after allowing three runs while striking out nine. With the Blue Jays not hitting the ball well, we can expect a similar outing.

Bargain Basement Arm

Reynaldo Lopez, White Sox at Royals ($6,000 FD, $4,600 DK): For a guy who struck out 14 batters in a start a little over a month ago, these prices are just too low. Use him and pay-up for any bats that you want.

Monkey Knife Fight Pick of the Day

Jake Odorizzi Over 6.5 Strikeouts: The AL ERA leader has struck out nine batters in consecutive starts. Seven should occur with relative ease against a team (the Tigers) with the third highest strikeout rate (26.2%) against righties.

It is a really small slate due to travel. Picking the correct arm will be crucial.

Top-Tier Arms

Aaron Nola, Phillies at Padres ($9,600 FD, $9,600 DK): Nola has regained whatever he was missing early in the season. He allowed only one run in seven innings in his last start Wednesday against the Cardinals. He is now 4-0 with a 2.50 ERA in his last seven starts. He has not allowed more than three runs in any of those outings. He gets a juicy matchup against the Padres, who strike out at the second highest rate in the league against righties at 24.9% and they rank 21st in OPS at .152, The Pods’ wOBA is dead last at .291. This was supposed to be an exciting year for the Padres….well against righties it certainly is not. Pencil Nola in as your #1 target in cash games.

Walker Buehler, Dodgers at Diamondbacks ($10,400 FD, $8,900 DK): Prior to his last start against the pesky Mets, Buehler had four consecutive quality starts. He looks to get on track against a Diamondbacks team that ranks 20th in wOBA against righties at .320 and strikes out at a sixth highest clip of 22.6%. I prefer Nola as a pitcher and his matchup, so let’s make Buehler a GPP-only candidate, but love that price on DK! Make him one of you arms on that site.

Middle-Tier Arm

Robbie Ray, Dodgers at Diamionbacks ($8,000 FD, $9,200 DK): We all know the potential is there with Ray. His K rate is through the roof at 11.78 per nine innings. If he could only get it together and stop walking so many batters (35 batters walked in only 62.2 innings pitched) and go deep into games (he has not gone six full innings on the season yet) he would be one of the top pitchers in baseball, like in 2017 when he went 15-5 with a 2,89 ERA and 215 strikeouts in only 162 innings pitched. One thing in Ray’s favor tonight is that the Dodgers clobber righties but really are just average against lefties. Their ISO vs. lefties of .177 ranks 17th in the league. He is obviously a GPP-only choice in my book.

Bargain-Basement Arm

Eric Lauer, Phillies at Padres ($7,400 FD, $7,300 DK): Take the savings here and spend up on almost any bat that you want! Lauer has a 1.50 ERA in his last three starts, and he appears to have found his rhythm. The 23-year-old lefty hasn’t walked a batter since a May 10th start in Colorado, and he’s started to rely on his curve for weak contact and swings and misses. If the Phillies are over-anxious against Lauer it could be a long night for the bats. He is a GPP-only choice to allow you to spend up for almost any bat you want.
