Welcome to the Man Advantage for October 24, 2022! We are entering the third week of the NHL season already, can you believe it?! All four sports are in full swing, and the World Series is set. It’s a beautiful time of year for sports fans. Tonight, we get a nice little six game slate that should be really fun to watch. There are quite a few places to go tonight, and this should be a high scoring slate for it being six games. Every team on the slate is projected to score 3+ goals, so we are going to have to be perfect to make some good money. Good luck!

Goalies

Frederik Andersen – Carolina Hurricanes: Freddie and the Canes continue their West Coast swing with an away matchup against the Canucks tonight. The Canes are one of the highest totals on the board, and Andersen is sporting a solid 2.35 GAA so far this season. A road matchup is sometimes risky, but this feels like a safe play among a lot of risk tonight. This is a late game, so make sure you keep an eye on the news through the day to confirm he gets the start.

Jordan Binnington – St. Louis Blues: Binnington faces the Jets tonight on the road in what should be a fairly tight game. His numbers are fantastic so far this season, with a GAA of 1.65 and a SV% of 0.94. The shot volume in this game should be fairly low, as both teams are producing less than 30 shots for per game. However, this play is more about the win and it’s hard to see Binnington giving up more than a goal or two.

Scott Wedgewood – Dallas Stars: Just as we published the article, the news broke about Greiss getting the start over Binnington in St. Louis, which moves Wedgewood into the slot for Binnington.

High Risk Goalie Pick -Mackenzie Blackwood – New Jersey Devils: The Devils feel like an incredibly sneaky play tonight as they host the Capitals. When Toronto, Edmonton, and Pittsburgh are all on the slate, teams like this (and their goalies) tend to fly under the radar. The shot volume for Blackwood should be there, and his numbers have looked pretty good so far.

Others to Consider: Anton Forsberg (OTT), Logan Thompson (VGK)

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Carolina Hurricanes Power Play – Sebastian Aho/Martin Necas/Stefan Noesen/Andrei Svechnikov/Brent Burns: The Canes’ power play is ranked in the middle of the pack so far this season, but the Vancouver penalty kill is ranked almost last. There may not be many chances for the Canes on the power play, but this gets you access to the top two even strength lines, which is a great setup for tonight. The focus here should be Aho/Svechnikov/Burns, but the addition of Noesen and/or Necas should make you pretty different and save you some salary.

Pittsburgh Penguins 2 – Evgeni Malkin/Jason Zucker/Bryan Rust/Kris Letang: The second line for the Pens has been great so far this year, and they have a chance to continue their solid play tonight against Edmonton. This line should see the likes of the second Edmonton line for most of the night, and that sets them up very nicely. Malkin/Rust play on the power play, so pairing them with Letang makes this a hybrid second line/power play look.

New Jersey Devils Power Play – Jack Hughes/Nico Hischier/Dawson Mercer/Jesper Bratt/Dougie Hamilton: As mentioned earlier, this feels like a very sneaky play tonight. On the young season, the Capitals’ PK ranks in the bottom 10 of the league, and the Devils’ power play is ranked 11th. The Devils will also be facing Charlie Lindgren in net, who is sporting a 3.18 GAA so far this season. The Devils look real good tonight.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Carolina Hurricanes 2 – Jesperi Kotkaniemi/Andrei Svechnikov/Martin Necas: Another way to roll out the Canes tonight is just to play the second line straight up. It’s a slight wrinkle from the power play above, but at a discount. Necas/Svechnikov/Burns should be a unique way to stack this line as well, and carries power play correlation. This line has been producing very well so far this year, and they are in a very good spot tonight.

St. Louis Blues Power Play – Robert Thomas/Brayden Schenn/Vladimir Tarasenko/Ivan Barbashev/Torey Krug: The Blues’ power play comes into tonight ranked 7th overall, while the Jets’ penalty kill is ranked dead last in the league. There should be a good opportunity for this unit to put up some points on the Jets tonight. This look also gets you access across multiple lines, which is a good way to stack the Blues, as their scoring can tend to be spread out.

Vegas Golden Knights 3 – William Karlsson/Jonathan Marchessault/Mike Amadio: The Golden Knights host the Leafs tonight, and this line could be very sneaky. They are a value line that could produce a bit of upside.

Winnipeg Jets 2 – Pierre-Luc Dubois/Cole Perfetti/Blake Wheeler: This is another second line that has been playing well of late, and they deserve a mention tonight against the Blues. They are probably the highest risk on this list, based on Binnington’s play so far, but they will definitely be contrarian. Make sure you don’t stack them against Binnington in the same lineup.

We get a little bit of a hockey reprieve tonight with a small three game Wednesday slate. Early season data is skewed, so with a small slate, it is encouraged to play light. Sergei Bobrovsky – Florida Panthers: The Panthers host the Flyers tonight, who have been winning for some reason. They are a surprising 3-0-0 on the season, but will have their hands full with the Panthers tonight. Bob makes for a solid play tonight, as the back-to-back should factor in here for the Flyers.

Jordan Binnington – St. Louis Blues: The Blues head to Seattle, where goaltending has been a bit of an issue. Both Jones and Grubauer are sporting GAAs over 3.00. The team as a whole is giving up 4 goals against per game so far this season. The Blues should be able to win this game, and Binnington should be a big part of that.

High Risk Goalie Pick – Felix Sandstrom – Philadelphia Flyers: Sandstrom draws his first start of the season on the road in Florida tonight. This is merely an upside risk play meant for deep GPPs. He should see a whole bunch of shot volume, and if he snags a win, that will be an added bonus.

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Colorado Avalanche 1 – Nathan MacKinnon/Valeri Nichushkin/Artturi Lehkonen/Cale Makar: Expect this line to be mega chalk tonight, as we can get them at a discount. They are at home against the Jets, and they should have no problem against Hellebuyck tonight.

St. Louis Blues 1- Robert Thomas/Pavel Buchnevich/Vladimir Tarasenko/Torey Krug: The Blues are in a fantastic spot tonight and may actually end up being a little bit of leverage.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Florida Panthers Power Play – Aleksander Barkov/Sam Bennett/Patric Hornqvist/Matthew Tkachuck/Sam Reinhart: The Panthers appear to be rolling out a forward-only power play look tonight, so that ends up being a little bit tough to stack. The best way to go about this is to find the guys who correlate at regular strength and share time on the power play. For example, Barkov/Reinhart is a good pairing from this mix.

Philadelphia Flyers 1 – Kevin Hayes/Joel Farabee/Travis Konecny/Tony DeAngelo: The whole Flyers team has been a surprise so far, scoring 3.67 goals per game on this young season. The top line is the preferred look here, but with the back-to-back, they carry a good bit of risk.

Seattle Kraken 2 – Matty Beniers/Jaden Schwartz/Jordan Eberle: Beniers will center Eberle and Schwartz tonight in a very interesting look. This is a new line, so we don’t know how they will mesh together, but they are worth a look for leverage tonight. The top Seattle look of Wennberg/Bjorkstrand/Burakovsky is very interesting as well.

Colorado Avalanche 3 – JT Compher/Andrew Cogliano/Logan O’Connor: On a short slate with teams with massive totals, it makes sense to go for depth. Running this line will get you access to a massive 4 goal projected total at basically no ownership. If they happen to outplay the top line, then you will be counting your money.

Florida Panthers 3 – Anton Lundell/Eetu Luostarinen/Colin White: The same approach for Colorado applies to the Panthers tonight. The Cats have a 4.4 implied goal total, and this line is potentially more viable than Colorado 3.

Two bigger slates in a row?! We had a nine game slate last night, followed up by an eight game slate tonight. Things are starting to settle into their patterns, and we are starting to find out who is good and who isn’t. It’s been a fun start to the season, and we will try to continue that tonight. Here comes the Hot Shot for Tuesday, 10/18. Good luck!

Goalies

Ilya Sorokin – New York Islanders: The Islanders host the Sharks tonight, and this is a good spot for Sorokin. The Sharks are only scoring 1.5 goals per game on this young season, and Sorokin is a solid goalie. The Islanders play a slow, defensive style, so the Sharks may have a struggle on their hands tonight.

Andrei Vasilevskiy – Tampa Bay Lightning: Vas and the Lightning host the surprisingly 2-0 Flyers tonight, which may end up pushing some ownership off of him. The jury is still out, though, on if the Flyers are actually a decent team. Roll Vas out with confidence tonight.

Jacob Markstrom – Calgary Flames: The Flames and Markstrom host the Golden Knights tonight, who have been struggling to score. Calgary has been giving up 3 goals against per game, so this one carries a little more risk, but this is still a solid play.

High Risk Goalie Pick – Carter Hart – Philadelphia Flyers: On the other side of the Lightning game, Hart has been playing fairly well in the young season. However, this is more of a volume pick. The Lightning should fire a ton of shots at Hart, so he could see some save upside. The Lightning have also been struggling a little offensively, putting up just 2.67 goals per game so far this season.

Others to Consider: Jeremy Swayman (BOS), Stuart Skinner (EDM), Spencer Martin (VAN)

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Edmonton Oilers Power Play – Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Evander Kane/Tyson Barrie: The obvious play on the slate tonight is the Oilers at home against Buffalo. With a whopping 4.4 projected goal total, they are primed for cash and single entry tournaments tonight. MME GPP players should strongly consider being under the field with their exposure to this line. Don’t fade them completely in GPP, but consider that the salaries will likely force you into some ugly punts that may not work out.

Boston Bruins 1 – Patrice Bergeron/Taylor Hall/Jake Debrusk/Hampus Lindholm: The Bruins’ top line has been quietly playing very well. Boston as a team has been putting up 5.33 goals per game, and they may get overlooked tonight. Keep in mind that they are on the back end of a traveling back-to-back, but they should still be in a great spot tonight against Ottawa.

Tampa Bay Lightning Power Play – Brayden Point/Steven Stamkos/Nikita Kucherov/Vladislav Namestnikov/Victor Hedman: The Lightning host the Flyers tonight, and they should be in a really good spot. Of course, if you choose to play Hart (our high risk goalie), then you shouldn’t put this unit in the same lineup. This unit has been known to be lethal, and they have a good chance against a Flyers team that we really don’t know about yet.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

New Jersey Devils 2 – Jack Hughes/Yegor Sharangovich/Jesper Bratt: We kick off a long list of high risk lines with the second Devils’ line, who will be going against the Ducks on home ice. They are high risk because the Devils have been underperforming so far this year, but they have a chance to right the ship tonight against a porous Anaheim defense and goalie.

New York Islanders 1 – Brock Nelson/Anthony Beauvillier/Anders Lee/Ryan Pulock: The Islanders are not a flashy or ‘sexy’ play on any given night, but there is no doubt they are in a good spot tonight. They host the Sharks tonight and should definitely see their chances. This is a play that could be a little different and has a great potential for scoring upside.

Calgary Flames 1 – Elias Lindholm/Jonathan Huberdeau/Tyler Toffoli/Rasmus Andersson: The Flames have a good matchup tonight at home against Vegas. This top line has been decent, but still feels like there is room for upside. They are high risk because Thompson for Vegas has been playing well to start the year.

Anaheim Ducks 1 – Trevor Zegras/Adam Henrique/Troy Terry: The Ducks face the Devils tonight, and this game has potential to be a scoring fest. If it turns into that, then this line is in a great spot tonight.

Vegas Golden Knights 3 – William Karlsson/Paul Cotter/Jonathan Marchessault: The Calgary/Vegas game could also be a higher scoring game, and this line has been sneakily playing well. They should be super low-owned, and provide a decent value to fill in your lineups.

Here we go into week 2 of the NHL regular season! Opening week was a blast, and we are starting to settle into some of the patterns of the early part of the year. We still won’t have a full run of advanced data for about another week, but we are starting to get a little bit of an idea of how teams are playing. Monday brings us a larger than normal 9 game slate with some obvious plays. As usual, don’t forget our brand new Projections Model, and good luck tonight!

Goalies

Igor Shesterkin – New York Rangers: The Rangers host the Anaheim Ducks in what should be a very solid opportunity for Igor. He comes into the season as one of the best in the league, maybe even the world, and he picked up right where he left off last season. This is more of a safe/cash play, as Anaheim is not expected to throw a ton of shot volume his way.

Frederik Andersen – Carolina Hurricanes: The Canes head to Seattle tonight to face a surprising Kraken team. Seattle has been scoring right out of the gate, and this game could end up seeing some fireworks. That being said, Andersen has been solid to start the year, and he should see some decent shot volume to make him worth playing. There is a little bit of risk here, with the way Seattle has played, but confidence is high that Freddy can shut them down.

Jake Oettinger – Dallas Stars: There is nothing flashy about Oettinger or the Stars, but Otter does his job night in and night out, for the most part. The Stars are not an offensive powerhouse, but they play a sound defensive game, which is what boosts Otter’s play. He should be a solid play tonight against Winnipeg on home ice, and probably won’t get much love from the field.

High Risk Goalie Pick – Ville Husso – Detroit Red Wings: Husso pitched a surprising shutout in his first game against Montreal. With the shot volume he should see tonight when the Wings host the Kings, this is an interesting upside play. The Kings have been playing well, which is why this is a high risk play, but there is some potential here.

Others to Consider: Darcy Kuemper (WAS), Erik Kallgren (TOR), Alexandar Georgiev (COL)

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Toronto Maple Leafs 1 – Auston Matthews/Michael Bunting/Mitch Marner/Morgan Rielly: The Leafs’ top line is the most obvious on the board tonight, as they host the lowly Coyotes. Arizona is a bad team, and the Leafs have a whopping 4.6 expected total. This line should be considered in all formats, and heavily leaned on in cash tonight.

Pittsburgh Penguins 1 – Sidney Crosby/Rickard Rakell/Jake Guentzel/Kris Letang: The Penguins head to Montreal to face the Canadiens tonight and should be a great play, as the Canadiens are not very good defensively to start the season. The Penguins should draw some attention tonight, and with good reason, as they are in a fantastic spot.

New York Rangers 1 – Mika Zibanejad/Kaapo Kakko/Chris Kreider/Adam Fox: Another really good looking spot tonight is the Rangers’ top line. This team has been playing lights out hockey to start the year. They get to host the Ducks tonight, who have been poor on defense to start the year. On top of that, Gibson for the Ducks has looked very shaky in his first couple of starts. This is a spot that may go slightly overlooked when you consider that Colorado and Toronto are on the slate.

Colorado Avalanche 1 – Nathan MacKinnon/Artturi Lehkonen/Mikko Rantanen/Cale Makar: The Avalanche head to Minnesota tonight to take on the Wild in what should be a lopsided game. With the likes of Toronto, Pittsburgh, and New York on the slate, this line may go overlooked. If you can get a prolific scoring line at low ownership against a pretty poor goalie, you could be well ahead of the field.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Detroit Red Wings 2 – Andrew Copp/David Perron/Filip Zadina: The Red Wings’ second line has been interesting all year, and tonight they have a matchup against the second line for the Kings. They may not be flashy, but they should get some opportunities. The Kings have historically not been great on the road, and Quick has been iffy so far this season.

New York Rangers 2 – Vincent Trocheck/Alexis Lafreniere/Artemi Panarin: The second line for the Rangers is another interesting way to play them. It will get you off the chalkier top line, but with a very good chance at upside.

Carolina Hurricanes 2 – Jesper Kotkaniemi/Martin Necas/Andrei Svechnikov: This has been one of the sneakier second lines in the league so far this year, and they have a great chance tonight in Seattle to continue that. Late night hammer time, too!

Last night was an absolute blast! It is so nice to have the NHL back in full swing, and even though it was only two games to start last night, we got a couple of very entertaining games. Tonight, we get a nice little six game slate, as we ease back into the swing of DFS hockey. Don’t forget to check out our brand new Projections Model! Let’s get into tonight’s slate! Remember, early in the season, we don’t have stats to look at, so play light to start. Good luck!

Goalies

Jack Campbell – Edmonton Oilers: Edmonton hosts Vancouver tonight, and this should be a very winnable game for the Oilers. Last year, the Canucks were a much better home team than they were a road team, giving up over 3 goals per game. The Oilers still look good and got what they needed in a quality goalie. Tonight’s opener should be a good spot for Campbell.

Alexandar Georgiev – Colorado Avalanche: On any given night, we would consider Georgiev to be a risky play. However, the Avalanche host the Blackhawks tonight. If you have been following along in the offseason, you know that Chicago is a shell of a professional team, so this play should be ‘safe’ and can be considered for cash.

Matt Murray – Toronto Maple Leafs: Murray makes his Leafs debut tonight against a very young Canadiens team. There is always some inherent risk with playing Murray, as he can be very streaky. Young teams can sometimes surprise, so there is risk in this play tonight. However, the Leafs should be able to handle the Canadiens easily.

High Risk Goalie Pick – Daniil Tarasov – Columbus Blue Jackets: This is a fantastic GPP play. Tarasov will likely be ignored against a Hurricanes team that loves to shoot low percentage shots at the net. HIs numbers in a small sample last year look very good, and with the shot volume, he could see a save bonus easily on DraftKings.

Others to Consider: Jeremy Swayman (BOS), Darcy Kuemper (WAS), Frederik Andersen (CAR)

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Edmonton Oilers Power Play – Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Zach Hyman/Tyson Barrie: Would you expect anything less? The Oilers are almost always a top play on the board, and this is the exact same unit from last year. Roll them out with confidence tonight as they host Vancouver.

Colorado Avalanche 1 – Nathan MacKinnon/Mikko Rantanen/Artturi Lehkonen/Cale Makar: This one feels like a pretty obvious play also, as the Avalanche will raise their championship banner tonight against Chicago. Usually, we look for a letdown after something like that, but the Blackhawks just don’t look too competitive on paper.

Toronto Maple Leafs 1 – Auston Matthews/Michael Bunting/Mitch Marner/Morgan Rielly: Ahh, the Leafs…great regular season team and fantasy lineup fillers…terrible playoff team. It is hard to argue the spot that this line is in tonight, and if Tavares goes, you can add him and Nylander to this look (take away Bunting) for a power play look. This should be one of the top plays on the night against a young Canadiens team.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Carolina Hurricanes 3 – Jordan Staal/Jesper Fast/Paul Stastny: One thing that we can remember from last year is that on home ice, this third line will match the opposing top line. That puts this line in a good spot against the Blue Jackets tonight, and they should see some extended ice time. That being said, this line got better with the addition of Stastny and is a very interesting look tonight.

Seattle Kraken 2 – Alex Wennberg/Jaden Schwartz/Oliver Bjorkstrand: Bjorkstrand joins the Kraken after a few years in Columbus, and he should be a good addition to this line. The Kraken take on Anaheim tonight, and they are in a good spot. This line is interesting when compared to the other two skating lines for the Kraken. The top line here is also in play, and Seattle could be a surprise tonight.

Montreal Canadiens 1 – Nick Suzuki/Cole Caufield/Josh Anderson/Chris Wideman: The Canadiens are going to be an interesting team this year. It is hard to say that they will be ‘good’, but they could have days where they surprise. No one will be on this look tonight, so it is risky, but interesting, as a GPP play.

NHL DFS Honorable Mentions: SEA1, WSHPP, BOSPP, CLS1

Slate Notes

Since tonight is just a two game slate to start the season, we will break them down individually. Remember to keep it light, especially early on in the season, and even more especially because it’s two games. We are all excited for the new season, but make sure you manage your bankroll until we get more information on each team.

Small disclaimer – the rates and stats used in this article are from LAST SEASON, since we don’t have any new data on these teams just yet.

Game 1: Tampa Bay Lightning @ New York Rangers

Tale of the Tape

Implied Vegas Totals: TBL 2.8 / NYR 2.9

The Lightning and Rangers kick off this season in what should be a fantastic game. This one is a rematch of the Eastern Conference Final from last year’s playoffs, and if this game is anything like that series, it will be amazing hockey to watch. Both teams are still packed with talent. The Rangers were a little bit of a surprise last year, as they weren’t really ‘supposed’ to go that deep into the playoffs. However, when you look at their roster, it makes a lot of sense why they were good, and should be better this year.

Goalie Matchup

Andrei Vasilevskiy vs. Igor Shesterkin

This is like an old school heavyweight bout! These two goalies are vying to be the best in the league, and they are very, very, very close to being 1-2. Both Vas and Igor have had some incredible seasons over the last couple of years, and Igor just took home the Vezina last year.

Both of these goalies are in play tonight, as they should be every night this season. It is virtually a coin flip as to who will win, but it seems the Rangers have a slight edge and should be able to take this game tonight. Igor is the lean, but it’s two games, so don’t be afraid to just correlate your goalie with your stacks.

Lines to Target

NYR1 – Mika Zibanejad/Kaapo Kakko/Chris Kreider/Adam Fox: As usual, it is hard to ignore the top line for the Rangers. They have a lot of firepower and talent. Kakko makes a nice value piece to pair with the big guns, and should benefit from the talent around him.

TBLPP – Steven Stamkos/Brayden Point/Nikita Kucherov/Alex Killorn/Victor Hedman: There is not much to say about one of the more lethal scoring units in the league. If you like the Tampa side better than the New York side, then these will be your targets.

NYR2 – Vincent Trocheck/Artemi Panarin/Vitali Kravstrov: The addition of Trocheck here really makes this line interesting. Kravstov is a rookie and could fly way under the radar tonight from an ownership perspective, so if you go here, make sure to get him in.

Others to Consider: NYR3

Filip Chytil (C) – NYR

Game 2: Vegas Golden Knights @ Los Angeles Kings

Tale of the Tape

Implied Vegas Totals: VGK 3.00 / LAK 3.10

This game comes off as the more ‘boring’ game of the pair, but should be better than it looks on the surface. LA snuck into the playoffs last year and gave Edmonton a run in the first round, taking them to seven games. The Kings ultimately lost that series, but it was very fun to watch. The Knights were a bit of a disappointment last year, and they didn’t do very much this year to get that much better. The Kings are a very interesting look for this slate.

Goalie Matchup

Logan Thompson vs. Jonathan Quick

It’s the old guy versus the new guy tonight. Logan Thompson is a young goalie who has looked pretty good recently. He should be a mainstay for the Knights this year, but we have yet to see how he can be over time. Quick had a bit of a resurgence last year, and the question becomes – can he keep that up?

The Kings have a sneaky scoring team, so Quick appears to be in the better spot in this game. There will be a little more focus on the early game, so you may be able to get him lower than both Igor and Vas. Thompson is definitely worth a shot in the deeper GPP contests, but he carries the most risk on the slate.

Lines to Target

VGK1 – Jack Eichel/Reilly Smith/Phil Kessel/Alec Martinez: This is the easy way to stack the Knights, but the question becomes – are they actually going to produce?

LAK2 – Phillip Danault/Viktor Arvidsson/Trevor Moore: This line is together again this year, and they should be just as fun to watch as they were last year. Not a lot of people will look at this line tonight, so this is a very nice leverage spot.

LAK1 – Anze Kopitar/Kevin Fiala/Adrian Kempe/Drew Doughty: We can’t ignore this line, as they should be a decent scoring line for the Kings. They are in a good spot tonight at home against a young goalie.

Others to Consider: VGK3, LAK3

Value

Quinton Byfield (C) – LAK

Gabriel Vilardi (W) – LAK

Phil Kessel (W) – VGK

Alec Martinez (D) – VGK – if he blocks shots like he did a season and a half ago, this price is criminally low

Welcome to the second round of the playoffs! We had a nice start to the second round last night, where Colorado beat St. Louis in overtime of a hard fought game. The Panthers got beat pretty badly on home ice, which was surprising. Tonight, the other two series open up, and they should be FUN to watch! Below, we break down the NHL DFS slate for Wednesday’s two playoff games. Let’s find the best NHL DFS plays for tonight. Good luck!

Slate Notes

Tonight’s two game slate is different from the other two gamers because of the playoff aspect. By condensing your player pool and nailing the value, you can have some very good success. We will cover value plays from each game.

As much as possible, you want to still avoid stacking against your goalie in your lineup. Negative correlation is never good, no matter the size of the slate.

Because of the volatility moving forward, cash games are not recommended for the rest of the NHL DFS season.

Game 1: New York Rangers @ Carolina Hurricanes

Tale of the Tape

Implied Vegas Totals: CAR 3.5 / NYR 2.7

The Canes host the Rangers tonight after beating the Bruins in 7 games. The Boston series was a good one, and these guys really showed some fight throughout. Opening the series on home ice is always a good thing, and the Canes should come out swinging. On the other side, the Rangers took care of the Penguins in 7 and will look to ride some momentum into the second round. This series should be high-event, and there should be plenty of scoring.

Goalie Matchup

Antti Raanta vs. Igor Shesterkin

The goalies in this game are very interesting. Both teams can score, and both goalies have been average, but also good. It’s a very weird situation with both of them. Raanta gets the nod from a consistency standpoint, but Igor is the hands down talent in this matchup. However, Igor’s numbers don’t show it. He has game changing ability, but sometimes he just doesn’t look good. The Penguins put up a bunch of goals on him, but some of them were thanks to poor defense.

From a DFS standpoint, Raanta is the play here, but keep in mind that this will likely be a higher scoring game. Igor has some shot upside, but the fear there is that he continues to give up goals in bunches.

Lines to Target

CAR3 – Jordan Staal/Nino Niederreiter/Jesper Fast: This third line will hard match the top Ranger line, setting them up for a very, very nice opportunity. Not many people will be on them, so this play is a great way to get some other top salary players in the mix in your lineups.

CARPP – Sebastian Aho/Vincent Trocheck/Seth Jarvis/Teuvo Teravainen/Tony DeAngelo: As much as the third line is in play, so is this one. They have a good chance tonight, as the Rangers proved to be leaky on defense in their series against the Pens.

NYR2 – Ryan Strome/Andrew Copp/Artemi Panarin: We cannot rely on last series’ stats for this series, but this line did play well. Consider this a higher risk play, but the matchup should be there for them tonight.

Others to Consider: NYRPP and NYR3

Value

Game 2: Edmonton Oilers @ Calgary Flames

Tale of the Tape

Implied Vegas Totals: CGY 3.4 / EDM 2.7

The Battle of Alberta gets under way tonight, as the Oilers open on the road against the Flames. In the first round, the Oilers were able to close out the Kings, but it surprisingly took 7 games to be done. The Kings really did a great job in the first round and gave a great team a great run. The Oilers now get an even tougher matchup against the Flames.

The Flames took care of the Stars in round 1, also in 7 games. The first round series was a low scoring affair, with lots of great goaltending. Markstrom held the Flames in most of the games, and Oettinger on the other side was absolutely stellar in the first series. Calgary has a tall task ahead of them, but it seems unlikely that this series will be as low-scoring as the one against the Stars. We can expect some fireworks in this series.

Goalie Matchup

Mike Smith vs. Jacob Markstrom

Let’s start with Smith. He had a very up and down regular season, but man did he turn it on in the first round of the playoffs. He had a couple of games where he looked a little more shaky, but overall had a great series. He should be able to continue that into this series, and there will be plenty of shot upside for him to be worth playing in your lineups.

On the other side, there is not much more to say about Markstrom. He has been a great goalie for the entire season, and he has had a very, very strong playoffs so far. There is a lot of good about the matchup he gets tonight, and in this series, and that is that he should be peppered with shots. Markstrom is the top upside play tonight, and he could be a top play when the night is over.

Lines to Target

EDMPP – Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl/Zach Hyman/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Tyson Barrie: One of the good things about the Oilers is that you pretty much know where a bulk of the scoring is going to come from, and that’s this unit right here. McDavid/Draisaitl can be a lethal combo, and they are always in play.

CGY1 – Elias Lindholm/Johnny Gaudreau/Matthew Tkachuk/Rasmus Andersson: The Flames’ top line has been good all season, and there is no reason they can’t continue. These guys should see a lot of the second line for the Oilers tonight, and that is a fantastic matchup.

Others to Consider: CGY2

Value

Mikael Backlund (C) – CGY

Andrew Mangiapane (W) – CGY

Kailer Yamamoto (W) – EDM

Cody Ceci (D) – EDM

Desperate hockey. That’s the name of the game on tonight’s playoff slate. The Rangers find themselves down 3-1 in the series and back on home ice to try to extend the series for one more game. We are cut down to a three game slate tonight, thanks to the Avalanche sweeping the Predators out of the first round. We will be starting to get more condensed from here on out, and these slates will continue to get smaller.

Goalies

Jacob Markstrom – Calgary Flames: Markstrom has been the best goalie in the first round so far, and he is probably the only goalie we can rely on tonight. He is good at home, and the Stars tend to struggle on the road, so this is a very solid play tonight.

Igor Shesterkin – New York Rangers: Igor is going to bounce back tonight. So are the Rangers. When your coach puts full confidence in you and announces you as the starter right after a game where you were chased for a second time, you have to respond well. This team will be playing desperate hockey tonight, and they will look to make a series out of it once again. The key will be the defense. They have kind of left Igor hanging out to dry lately, and he can’t do it on his own. This is a huge spot for him and the Rangers, and they need to come through.

High Risk GPP Goalie Pick – Jake Oettinger – Dallas Stars OR Ilya Samsonov – Washington Capitals: Both of these plays offer some decent upside, as they are on the road tonight. Florida will be looking to use home ice to their advantage, and there have been a ton of goals scored in that series, so the lean here is Oettinger. Oettinger has been playing really well and his numbers look fantastic. On top of that, this has been a very tight series, and the goals have been hard to come by. Those factors make him a very intriguing high risk play.

New York Rangers Power Play – Mika Zibanejad/Ryan Strome/Chris Kreider/Artemi Panarin/Adam Fox: As mentioned above, the Rangers are going to be fired up tonight, and they should be able to get it going. Domingue has been surprisingly very good for the Pens, which suggests that we may see a little bit of regression in his play. He has been good when he needs to be, but the Penguins’ defense has been helping him a lot. If the Rangers can pull off a big win tonight, the guys in this unit are going to be the ones to make it happen.

Florida Panthers Power Play – Aleksander Barkov/Jonathan Huberdeau/Sam Reinhart/Anthony Duclair/Claude Giroux: Florida is one of the few teams that deploys five forwards as their top power play unit. You don’t have to full stack them here, and Barkov/Huberdeau is a great pairing. The Panthers should be able to put a win together on home ice, and that duo has been doing some damage so far this series. Verhaeghe is a good pair with Barkov/Huberdeau as well, as he correlates top line, but not on the power play, creating a contrarian crossover stack.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Calgary Flames 1 – Elias Lindholm/Matthew Tkachuk/Johnny Gaudreau/Rasmus Andersson: The top line for the Flames feels like they are always in play, and tonight is no different. This series is finally starting to open up a little bit, but is still overall pretty tight. These guys have been good this series, but they are not exploding like they are capable of. For that reason, we consider them high risk, but certainly playable.

Pittsburgh Penguins Power Play – Sidney Crosby/Jake Guentzel/Bryan Rust/Evgeni Malkin/Kris Letang: This unit for Pittsburgh has been absolutely dominant in this series. As much as the Rangers should win tonight, we cannot ignore what these guys are doing. They have a combined 23 points between them, and that is a trend worth following. They are a good hedge against the Rangers power play tonight, and are definitely worth playing if you think the game goes in Pittsburgh’s favor.

Goalies

Mike Smith – Edmonton Oilers: The Oilers should be able to rebound after a hard fought game 1. The Kings really did put up a nice fight, which is a bit of a surprise. Tonight is as close to a must-win for the Oilers, and we can expect them to rebound.

Ville Husso – St. Louis Blues: Husso looked really strong in the first game of this series, and the Blues were able to dominate. The Wild just don’t seem to have the depth that they need to keep up in the playoffs, and as long as Fleury keeps playing this way, it could be a very early exit for Minnesota. STL is poised to take a stranglehold on the series and send it home up 2-0.

High Risk GPP Goalie Pick – Antti Raanta – Carolina Hurricanes: The Canes and Bruins face off again tonight for game 2 in Carolina. Carolina dominated the Bruins across the board in game one, and as much as we want to think the B’s rebound, it is going to be a tall task. They didn’t show much fight during game 1, and PNC Arena was ROCKIN’. There is a very good chance that Raanta is able to duplicate his performance tonight and give the Canes a 2-0 lead headed back to Boston. Jonathan Quick is also a prime candidate for the high risk goalie pick tonight, as he grabbed a save bonus and a win on Monday. He has a chance to do it again tonight, but will need to stay sharp. Jack Campbell is also in play, but carries a lot of risk, particularly tonight.

Edmonton Oilers Power Play – Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Zach Hyman/Tyson Barrie: Even though they lost, we still got good production out of this unit on Monday night. Tonight should be no different, and it may be even better. McDavid and crew should rebound nicely tonight from a surprise loss on home ice in game one.

St. Louis Blues 2 – Ryan O’Reilly/Brandon Saad/David Perron/Justin Faulk: This line absolutely dominated Minnesota in game one (thanks to a Perron hat trick), and there really is no reason to suspect they can’t do it again tonight. Fleury has not been great, and the defense in front of him is not helping. If the Blues can grab this game tonight, then they will have a stranglehold on this series heading back to St. Louis. You know that’s exactly what they want, and there really isn’t any reason they can’t.

Carolina Hurricanes Power Play – Vincent Trocheck/Sebastian Aho/Teuvo Teravainen/Seth Jarvis/Tony DeAngelo: The Canes got scoring from a little bit of everywhere in game one, and Boston didn’t show any signs of resistance, really. The B’s have holes in their game, and there is a good chance that the Canes can duplicate their performance tonight.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Toronto Maple Leafs 1 – Auston Matthews/Mitch Marner/Michael Bunting/Morgan Rielly: The Leafs’ top line has another very, very nice matchup tonight. However, there is reason to believe that the Lightning will be able to fight back and potentially grab a win to even the series. That’s exactly where the high risk comes in. This series should be a long one, so we can’t rely on this line in every game.

Los Angeles Kings 2 – Phillip Danault/Trevor Moore/Alex Iafallo: That second Kings line can’t be good without Arvidsson, right?! Turns out that’s not the case, as this line contributed 3 of the 4 goals the other night. They should be in a position to do it again, but they will likely carry more ownership tonight.

Tampa Bay Lightning 1 – Steven Stamkos/Nikita Kucherov/Ondrej Palat/Victor Hedman: As mentioned above, the Lightning are not going to go away easily. If they are to compete in this series, this line really needs to get it going, and tonight feels like a night they can do just that. The field will likely be down on them tonight, so we may see some lower ownership than we otherwise would. This game could be very tight, which is why they are higher risk.

Carolina Hurricanes 3 – Jordan Staal/Jesper Fast/Nino Niederreiter: The Canes’ third line will be spending a ton of time on the ice against the Bruins’ top line, and this is a great spot to get a little different.

Tonight’s slate is one of three left in the NHL regular season. So many emotions come with that fact…one being sadness that the regular season is over. Another is excitement for the playoffs, and for some fans, disgust and anger because their team didn’t make it. For these last few slates, it is important to know what’s on the line. For that reason, we will have one extra section for the different scenarios in play. Let’s find the best NHL DFS picks for DraftKings and FanDuel. Good luck!

Playoff Scenario Notes

Out of the Playoffs, nothing to play for: We will get this one out of the way quickly, because these teams have nothing left to play for (unless you count draft lottery chances): ARI, CHI, MTL, PHI, SEA, WPG

Locked into the Playoffs: While they may be able to improve their seed, these teams have already clinched playoff spots: NYR, LAK

Still Playing to get in: Dallas and Vegas are the two teams who can still get into the playoffs. While each team has two games left to play, Dallas has a four point lead on the Knights in the standings, so they can clinch tonight.

The scenarios above should NOT be very influential in building lineups tonight. We still want to build as a normal DFS slate, but if it comes down to it and you have to choose, it makes sense to give a slight bias to a team still fighting for its playoff spot. Overall, this is a very tough slate, and it is imperative to keep an eye on the news throughout the day.

Goalies

Scott Wedgewood – Dallas Stars: The Stars have a nice matchup tonight to lock up the last playoff spot in the West, as they host the lowly Coyotes. Wedgewood should be the cash play tonight, and he should get a win.

Logan Thompson – Vegas Golden Knights: The Knights head to Chicago tonight to face the Blackhawks, where they should be able to pull the win. With the Knights playing last night, and Lehner being out for the season, it is important to verify that Thompson gets the start again tonight on a back to back.

High Risk Goalie Pick – Chris Driedger – Seattle Kraken: Driedger should get the nod tonight against the Kings, who just clinched a playoff spot. If the Kings end up sitting anyone tonight, then this becomes less risky. You can also consider Martin Jones (PHI) in this spot, as the Jets have been struggling to score. However, the Jets are one of our top plays tonight, so make sure you don’t have him in a lineup with a Jets stack.

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Dallas Stars 1 – Roope Hintz/Joe Pavelski/Jason Robertson/John Klingberg: The Stars have the most to play for tonight, as they look to clinch a playoff spot. Wow, they have an easy path to the playoffs tonight. A cupcake matchup against the Coyotes tonight should get them in, and this line will have to be the one they rely on for scoring, as they have all year. All of these guys slot into the top power play, and Namestnikov joins them, who would provide a slightly different look, as well as some value.

Winnipeg Jets Power Play – Pierre-Luc Dubois/Kyle Connor/Paul Stastny/Nikolaj Ehlers/Neal Pionk: This Jets/Flyers game should be fairly high scoring, as we have two poor defensive teams with poor goalies in net. The Jets have a slight edge here, and the power play helps you get access to the top two lines, who are in good spots against the Flyers’ depth (at even strength).

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

New York Rangers: As much as we want to have the Rangers in our lineups tonight, it may make sense to fade them. They are already going to be without Copp and Panarin, and they will definitely have some other ‘regulars’ sitting out tonight. Thanks to this news, we can’t list a line right now. However, if they have a solid one, we can play them. Keep an eye on Discord closer to lock to see if they are in play.

Vegas Golden Knights 1 – Chandler Stephenson/Max Pacioretty/Mark Stone/Alex Pietrangelo: The Knights are the only other team on the slate with something to play for, so we can definitely target them tonight. The top line should have their chances against the Hawks, and they should be able to capitalize.

Philadelphia Flyers 1 – Kevin Hayes/Scott Laughton/Travis Konecny/Travis Sanheim: As mentioned above, the Flyers/Jets game should see some scoring, and this top line has quietly been playing well of late. They should see their chances against a Jets team who has been struggling a bit on defense lately.

Notes: Pending the Rangers’ lineup, Montreal may get a boost. Seattle would be on our radar as well, if Quick and some key Kings’ players are resting. This slate is very fluid. Chicago’s top line may get a boost, depending on who the Knights roll out in net.
