NBA DFS: Ghost’s Gems 01/18/2023

Many NBA stars have been battling injuries lately. Tonight is no different, but there are plenty of elite game environments to be excited about. It’s a Wet Wednesday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Indiana Pacers @ Oklahoma City Thunder (-4.5)

Indiana Pacers (+4.5)

Since losing Tyrese Haliburton to a knee injury, the Pacers have lost three straight. However, without their best player, comes many opportunities for others. During those three games, TJ McConnell continues to be one of the most popular players on any given NBA slate. He has averaged 18.3/6.7/9 on 63.9% shooting. There is also intrigue in Myles Turner, who figures to be a core player on this slate. In his return to the lineup a few days ago, Turner saw many more minutes and came through with 30/8/2 and four blocks, making five three-pointers along the way. With Oklahoma City ranked 27th in the league versus true centers and struggling to find a replacement in the absences of Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Aleksej Pokusevski, Turner is set to dominate the paint on both ends of the court tonight.

Oklahoma City Thunder (-4.5)

This game has tremendous stack ability and is one of the best on the NBA slate. On the Thunder’s side of the ball, it begins with their backcourt duo of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey. Over their last six games, OKC is 5-1. During that span, SGA has averaged 29.2/5.3/4.3 on 54.3% shooting. However, Giddey has been phenomenal in his own right. Giddey has averaged 20.2/8.2/7.8 on 51.5% shooting. With the Pacers perimeter defense taking a serious hit in the absence of Haliburton, both SGA and Giddey are in a great spot.

Cleveland Cavaliers @ Memphis Grizzlies (-6.5)

Cleveland Cavaliers (+6.5)

Donovan Mitchell did not practice yesterday and has since been downgraded to doubtful tonight. Thus, the offense will fall on Darius Garland, should Mitchell in fact miss this game. While the former has taken a back seat to the newly acquired Mitchell, Garland is a polarizing talent on offense. On the season, Garland has posted 1.08 fantasy points per minute through a 27% usage rate, averaging 21.4/2.8/7.8. While both his usage rate and fantasy output is lower than Mitchell’s, Garland excels with his teammate off the floor. Garland sees an increase to 1.22 fantasy points per minute through a 30% usage rate without Mitchell. Thus, he is one of the best plays in the mid range of this pricing grid on this NBA slate.

Memphis Grizzlies (-6.5)

Memphis boasts a complete roster on both sides of the court. They have a star player in Ja Morant, a defensive force in Jaren Jackson Jr., and solid role players in Desmond Bane, Steven Adams, Dillion Brooks, and others. However, this can make things complicated in fantasy hoops. Morant will lead the charge without a doubt, but Cleveland has the #2 defense in the NBA. Thus, a matchup play in this one is Steven Adams. While he certainly will have few shot attempts, he will be needed to log heavy minutes versus Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. Moreover, with Jaren Jackson Jr. still battling foul trouble, Adams has tremendous potential for a double-double in this one in nearly 30+ minutes of play.

Sacramento Kings @ Los Angeles Lakers (OTB)

The Kings have been a pleasant surprise this season. After years of mediocrity and struggling to find their groove, they are now leading a division that has Golden State, Phoenix, and both Los Angeles teams in it. Thanks to their All-Star duo of De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, Sacramento fans should be excited for the near future. Most notably, the latter came into town with lofty expectations after being acquired for Tyrese Haliburton. However, Sabonis has truly dominated this season. He leads the NBA in both total rebounds and rebounds per game, while averaging 18.9/12.6/7.1 on 61% shooting. The Lakers rank 29th in the league versus playmaking centers, making this a tremendous matchup for Sabonis.

Los Angeles Lakers (OTB)

There is little to like about this offense other than LeBron James. However, in doing so, NBA lineup construction becomes increasingly difficult. Thus, fear not in fading the Lakers tonight. However, both LeBron and Sabonis make for an excellent 1-2 punch in the last game of the slate. James has 24 or more points in each of his last seven games, including three 40-point outings. Moreover, he has averaged 37/9.7/8.6 during that span through a whopping 36.4% usage rate.

NBA DFS: Ghost’s Gems 01/17/2023

There are only four games on the NBA schedule tonight, but there is plenty of intrigue. It’s a Taco Tuesday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Toronto Raptors @ Milwaukee Bucks (-6.5)

Toronto Raptors (+6.5)

Both of these teams are on the second half of a back-to-back and have key players in question. After the Raptors starting unit all played over 40 minutes yesterday in an overtime win versus the Knicks, it’s possible to see someone rest. The most likely candidate is Fred VanVleet, who has been dealing with a back injury. With Pascal Siakam dealing with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez in the paint, the perimeter options will have to carry the offense. VanVleet has been having a streaky season, showing upside on the offensive end, while also carrying a low floor. Moreover, Gary Trent Jr. seems to have shaken off his jitters from the beginning of the season. In his last 11 games, GTJ has seen 30 or more minutes in ten appearances, scoring 20 or more points in seven of them. The two are the preferred Raptors on this NBA slate.

Milwaukee Bucks (-6.5)

Giannis Antetokounmpo missed his third consecutive game yesterday. However, he had taken part in warmup and was listed as probable. Barring any setback, he is in a great spot to lead the NBA slate in scoring. While he had two poor performances recently, the upside he carries against the Raptors is tremendous. While Toronto sits 6th in the league in points allowed in the paint, Giannis is matchup proof. The MVP candidate has averaged 30.1/15/6.3 over his last seven games, despite two appearances with seven and nine points. There are plenty of studs to choose from on this slate, so Brook Lopez makes for a fine alternate to get exposure to this competitive game environment.

Brooklyn Nets @ San Antonio Spurs (+5.5)

Brooklyn Nets (-5.5)

Once one of the hottest teams in the NBA, the Nets are 0-2 since losing Kevin Durant to an MCL sprain. However, a matchup versus a Spurs defense that ranks last in the league could be what they need to get things in gear. The Spurs defense struggles most notably in their backcourt. They sit 27th versus primary ball handlers and 29th versus off-ball guards, allowing the 22nd most three-pointers and the highest shooting percentage from behind the arc. Ben Simmons has a modest 9% usage rate in two games without Durant, but he continues to run point alongside Kyrie Irving. Moreover, the quartet of Irving, Curry, Harris, and Warren are set to flourish in a quick game environment.

San Antonio Spurs (+5.5)

Vegas has this game as far from a blowout as anticipated. Despite the lopsided matchup on paper, the Spurs aren’t as big of underdogs as one would expect. Thus, the trio of Tre Jones, Keldon Johnson, and Jakob Poeltl are in for big minutes. Jones has been a pleasant surprise for the rebuilding Spurs this season. Over his last seven games, Jones has been phenomenal on offense despite the team’s 1-6 record. During that span, Jones has averaged 19.1/4.3/5.7 on 49.1% shooting. With the Nets shifting Simmons to the paint on defense, Jones gets a friendly matchup versus Kyrie Irving.

Portland Trail Blazers @ Denver Nuggets (-6.5)

Portland Trail Blazers (+6.5)

If you’re looking for fireworks on this NBA slate, look no further. This matchup is set to feature two elite offenses, but all eyes will be on Damian Lillard versus Nikola Jokic. The former has been on quite a tear for the Trail Blazers recently. Over his last five games, Lillard has scored 30 or more points in each appearance. Moreover, Lillard has averaged 38/3.6/6.4 on 53.1% shooting during that span while attempting over ten three-pointers per night.

Denver Nuggets (-6.5)

On the flipside of Lillard’s upside is none other than Nikola Jokic. The back-to-back NBA MVP has done it all for the Nuggets this season, and has posted three triple-doubles over his last four games. Moreover, he has averaged 20/13.5/12.3 during that span. If Jokic does not fit builds, both Aaron Gordon and Michael Porter Jr. are good ways to get exposure to this elite game environment. The two rely heavily on their scoring to provide a good fantasy output, but if Jokic does not break the slate, it’s largely because someone else on Denver is carrying the load alongside with him.

Philadelphia 76ers @ Los Angeles Clippers (+1.5)

Philadelphia 76ers (-1.5)

While the status of Paul George greatly impacts the Clippers rotation, his probable return makes this an elite game environment that will go overlooked on a small NBA slate. While there are many players with offensive upside on both teams, none have been playing to the level that James Harden has been lately. Over his last five games, The Beard has averaged 23/8.4/13 on 57.4% shooting. Moreover, Harden has two triple-doubles during that span, while collecting 11 or more assists in each appearance. Primary ball handlers versus the Clippers will forever be one of the best matchups in NBA DFS, and Harden is set to take flight tonight.

Los Angeles Clippers (+1.5)

Exposure to the Clippers on this NBA slate is contingent on the status of Paul George. After practicing on Monday, the expectation is that PG will return after missing the team’s last five games. However, this greatly impacts the production of others around him. Given the level of uncertainty and the fact that this game is the last to tipoff, this is a risk that could send lineups to the top or bottom of the leaderboards.

There are multiple ways to play different NBA slates tonight. Since the schedule will be roughly 12 hours long from beginning to end, there are showdowns, a main slate, and a late slate available. It’s a Mojito Monday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Golden State Warriors @ Washington Wizards (+3.5)

Golden State Warriors (-3.5)

The Warriors are on the second half of a back-to-back, therefore this can be a lengthly injury report. Klay Thompson has already been ruled out, while the statuses of Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Andrew Wiggins need to be monitored. Curry has struggled in his three games since returning from an injury, but Jordan Poole has thrived. Over his last nine games, Poole has averaged 25.7/3.9/5 on 43.7% shooting. Moreover, he has scored 20 or more points in each of those nine appearances. In the absence of Thompson, Poole will be able to run the offense while Curry is on the bench, while flourishing as a secondary ball handler with Curry on the court. On a small NBA slate, Poole is one of the best targets in the mid range of the pricing grid.

Washington Wizards (+3.5)

Exposure to this offense is contingent on the status of Bradley Beal. The face of the Wizards franchise has made a single appearance in the team’s last eight games before leaving early after aggravating his hamstring injury. While many players have stepped up in different fashions, one that has struggled has been Kristaps Porzingis. KP has a mere two double-doubles over his last five games, but he has scored 20 or more points in four of those appearances. On a small NBA slate, the top of the pricing grid is a true premium, and there may not be anyone to consider once this game tips off.

Toronto Raptors @ New York Knicks (-3.5)

Toronto Raptors (+3.5)

Many rumours continue to swirl around the core players of this rotation. OG Anunoby is by far the most coveted wing on the trade block, while Gary Trent Jr. and Fred VanVleet could garner interest before the trade deadline. Nonetheless, the Raptors have won three of their last four and are still making a playoff push. Should VanVleet miss this game because of a lower-back injury, Scottie Barnes instantly becomes one of the most popular players on the NBA slate. Moreover, amidst the turmoil of a disappointing season, Pascal Siakam continues to thrive. Leading the team with a 28.5% usage rate, Siakam has averaged 25.7/8.2/6.4 on 47.8% shooting this season. He leads the team in scoring, rebounding, and assists, making him one of the most intriguing options at the top of the pricing grid of this NBA slate.

New York Knicks (-3.5)

Jalen Brunson was one of the most popular headliners of this past offseason. Leaving Dallas for the Big Apple was a surprise to no one, but his contract certainly was. However, Brunson has taken over this offense, along with Julius Randle. Over his last eight games, Brunson has scored 20 or more points in every appearance. Moreover, he has averaged 32.4/5.6/5.7 on 52.3% shooting during that span, leading the team in scoring and field goal attempts. Toronto’s zone defense is always a polarizing one to face, but Brunson and Randle will be relied upon to log heavy minutes in a tightly-contested affair. Brunson makes for one of the better options in the mid range of the pricing grid of this NBA slate, similarly to Jordan Poole.

New Orleans Pelicans @ Cleveland Cavaliers (-6.5)

New Orleans Pelicans (+6.5)

Despite missing two key players in Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, the Pelicans still hold the #3 seed in the Western Conference. Tonight, they face the #2 defense in the NBA and will be in tough to matchup versus a frontcourt of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. However, this is one of the most competitive game environments on the slate. CJ McCollum continues to run the offense but lacks point/dollar upside on this slate. Another tough matchup will be Jonas Valanciunas versus Mobley and Allen, but his minutes will be plentiful given the size of the Cavaliers. Lastly, do not overlook the important of Jose Alvarado, should Herbert Jones miss this game. If the latter is ruled out, Alvarado will draw the daunting task of guarding Donovan Mitchell.

Cleveland Cavaliers (-6.5)

This is one of the most rounded teams in the NBA. The Cavaliers boast a tremendous balance between offense and defense. Tonight will be yet another test for a team that has Championship hopes. In a matchup versus the Pelicans, the wings will flourish. However, this offense is not tailored to its wings, rather, its backcourt and frontcourt duos. Jarrett Allen has been phenomenal on both ends of the court this season and is in a great matchup. Over his last two games, Allen has averaged 21.5/9/4 on 70.4% shooting. New Orleans allows nearly 50 points in the paint per game, and Allen will be featured early and often to attack Jonas Valanciunas on the inside.

As has been the theme of the week, tonight’s NBA slate is riddled with injuries. However, plenty of elite game environments remain. It’s a Fajita Friday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Atlanta Hawks @ Indiana Pacers (+3.5)

Atlanta Hawks (-3.5)

The lone bright spot of the Pacers in their own end of the court has been their on-ball defense. However, this changes drastically with Tyrese Haliburton ruled out for the next two weeks. Trae Young missed last game with an illness, but is off the injury report. Wednesday night was a prime example of how this offense can struggle without the face of their franchise. Not only does Young lead the team with a 33.6% usage rate, but he also leads the team in both scoring and assists as well. Despite swirling rumors around the team, Young has been excellent this NBA season, averaging 27.5/2.9/9.8 on 42.2% shooting.

Indiana Pacers (+3.5)

As mentioned above, Tyrese Haliburton will be out for at least two weeks with a sprained elbow. Thus, there is ample opportunity for others on the offensive side of the ball. While TJ McConnell and Andrew Nembhard figure to share the rock on the starting unit, interest should also lie in Indiana’s shooters. While Atlanta has good on-ball defense thanks to Dejounte Murray, Trae Young has been abysmal on defense with a 117.7 rating. Thus, Buddy Hield and Bennedict Mathurin cannot be overlooked on this NBA slate. Hield leads the league in three-pointers this season with 165 makes. Moreover, he has averaged 18.3 points while shooting 42.7% from behind the arc. Meanwhile, Mathurin continues to lead the Pacers in usage at 25.8% and figures to play a crucial role in this offense in the absence of Haliburton.

Denver Nuggets @ Los Angeles Clippers (-1.5)

Denver Nuggets (+1.5)

Nikola Jokic was a surprising addition to the Nuggets injury report. Known as one of the most durable players in the NBA over recent years, the back-to-back MVP will dictate exposure to this offense. Should he evidently play, he is in a prime spot to lead the slate in scoring. The Clippers currently rank 19th in points allowed in the paint and 24th versus true centers. Moreover, Jokic has averaged 25.5/12.3/11 over his last 13 games, recording a whopping seven triple-doubles along the way. If Jokic is ruled out, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon will lead the starting unit, while Bones Hyland becomes an intriguing play off the bench.

Los Angeles Clippers (-1.5)

Kawhi Leonard is no longer mispriced on NBA DFS sites. Tonight, in the absence of Paul George, Leonard will once again lead the charge for the Clippers. However, there are other targets in this offense as well. Norman Powell and Terance Mann both continue to log heavy minutes over veterans John Wall and Reggie Jackson. Moreover, Powell has now scored in double digits in each of his last four appearances. During that span, Powell has averaged 18.8/3.5/1.8 on 50% shooting, including 20 or more points in two of his last four outings. If you cannot play Leonard, don’t hesitate to get exposure to this offense in other ways.

Houston Rockets @ Sacramento Kings (-10.5)

Houston Rockets (+10.5)

A rematch of Wednesday’s contest is highlighted for the second time in three days. A key difference, however, is that Kevin Porter Jr. has been ruled out for tonight’s game. Thus, both Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun are elite targets on this NBA slate. On the season, Green leads the team with a 28.1% usage rate and has posted 0.98 fantasy points per minute. However, with KPJ off the court, Green’s output increases to 1.07 fantasy points per minute and a 32.4% usage rate. Moreover, Sengun continues to be ignored by the field. He was highlighted in Wednesday’s article, which you can find here. The sophomore came through with the first triple-double of his career, posting a 10/10/10 scoring line on 55.56% shooting.

Sacramento Kings (-10.5)

Another NBA slate featuring the Kings is another day to play Sabonis or Fox. However, both have been featured countless times over the years. Kevin Huerter was scratched on Wednesday because of an illness and he did not practice yesterday. Should Huerter be ruled out for tonight’s game, both Malik Monk and Terence Davis will play larger roles on offense against one of, if not the worst defense in the NBA. However, make no mistake about it, Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox are the prime targets here.

This week’s NBA slates have been determined by injuries. Plenty of key players have been missing for their respective teams, and tonight is no different. It’s a Thirsty Thursday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Milwaukee Bucks @ Miami Heat (OTB)

Milwaukee Bucks (OTB)

The Bucks are on the second half of a back-to-back and there will be injury news to follow. Khris Middleton resumed basketball activities this week, but his timetable to return has yet to be determined. Moreover, Grayson Allen left and did not return to last night’s game versus the Hawks. Thus, there will be plenty of value around Giannis Antetokounmpo. Should the two-time NBA MVP suit up, he’s a strong candidate to lead the slate in scoring. Moreover, Jrue Holiday will be a key part of the offense once again. Pat Connaughton, Bobby Portis, Brook Lopez, and Jevon Carter will all be in for significant minutes should both Middleton and Allen miss this game.

Miami Heat (OTB)

For what seems to be the first time in franchise history, the Heat are ahead of the game with their injury report. While Bam Adebayo is probable to play, both Kyle Lowry and Tyler Herro have already been ruled out, in addition to Caleb Martin. The likely return of Adeabyo will shift Orlando Robinson to the bench, but there will still be plenty of value in this backcourt. Max Strus and Gabe Vincent will be in for a heavy workload alongside Jimmy Butler and company. Moreover, Victor Oladipo takes over the bench unit as its primary scorer. There are different directions to take with this rotation on a small NBA slate, but exposure to the Heat is a must.

Boston Celtics @ Brooklyn Nets (+3.5)

Boston Celtics (-3.5)

Another team on the second half of a back-to-back is Boston. Last night, we saw both Marcus Smart and Robert Williams III be ruled out with injuries, but their statuses for tonight remain unclear at the time of writing. Whether the duo returns to the lineup or not is irrelevant to the importance that both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have to this offense on a nightly basis. Over their last 12 games, Brown and Tatum have combined for 61.1 points per game. Moreover, the two lead the team in usage rate at 33.2% and 33.8%, respectively. On a small NBA slate with plenty of value, this game has the star power to fill the rest of lineups.

Brooklyn Nets (+3.5)

Kevin Durant has been having quite the season, He has averaged 29.7/6.7/5.3 while being an NBA MVP candidate, leading the Nets to #2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, an MCL injury is set to sideline KD for approximately one month. It could not come at a worse time, as the Nets are the hottest team in the league right now. However, this will create ample opportunity for Kyrie Irving on offense. On the season, Irving has averaged 26/4.9/4.7 on 48.8% shooting through a 29.1% usage rate, resulting in 1.18 fantasy points per minute. However, with KD off the court, Irving sees his usage rate climb to a whopping 36.3% and his fantasy points per minute increases to 1.35. The stage is set for Kyrie to take the reigns of this offense once again.

It is truly crucial to follow the news as an NBA slate unfolds. Yesterday, many players were ruled out, causing short rotations in nearly every game. Tonight, injury reports are one again lengthly and some teams are on the second half of a back-to-back. It’s a Wet Wednesday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Chicago Bulls @ Washington Wizards (OTB)

Chicago Bulls (OTB)

Both teams in this game have crucial players on their injury reports. For the Bulls, DeMar DeRozan left the team’s last game and did not return due to a quadriceps injury. He is currently listed as questionable for tonight. Whether DeRozan plays or not does not shift the importance that both Nikola Vucevic and Zach Lavine will have on this NBA slate. Over his last eight games, Vucevic has posted seven double-doubles. Moreover, he has averaged 17.6/13.8/3.5 on 56.1% shooting during that span. Lavine has also picked it up in what can only be described as a disappointing season. Over his last three games, Lavine leads the team with a 31.3% usage rate. He has three straight outings with 27 or more points, including 36-point and 41-point efforts. Over his last three, Lavine has averaged 34.7/5.3/4.7 on 56.3% shooting, including a whopping seven three-pointers made per night.

Washington Wizards (OTB)

Washington remains without Bradley Beal and could be even more shorthanded tonight. Both Kristaps Porzingis and Daniel Gafford are listed as questionable, while partially practicing yesterday. Should either frontcourt player miss this one, Rui Hachimura will be in for more offensive looks. On the season, Hachimura has a 22.3% usage rate and 0.90 fantasy points per minute. However, with Beal, Porzingis, and Gafford off the floor, his numbers do not increase by an overwhelming amount. This is large in part due to dominating usage on the second unit, but struggling to coincide with Kyle Kuzma. Thus, on a large NBA slate, exposure to a mediocre offense is far from a must.

Milwaukee Bucks @ Atlanta Hawks (OTB)

Should players be ruled out at the same rate as last night’s NBA slate, Giannis Antetokounmpo will be the first priority. Despite struggling in a shocking blowout loss to the Hornets, Giannis still has 30 or more points in four of his last six games. During that span, he has averaged 34/14.5/5.7 on 48.9% shooting, despite a 9/4/0 stat line against the Hornets. Moreover, the Greek Freak is in a tremendous matchup. With Clint Capela still out for the Hawks, Onyeka Okongwu will be severely outmatched in the paint on both ends of the floor. The Hawks rank 26th in points in the paint per game, paving the way for Giannis to dominate on both ends of the paint tonight.

Despite Jrue Holiday being an elite defender, the Bucks have been getting dominated by opposing primary ball handlers as of late. In their last three games, the Bucks have allowed Jalen Brunson to drop 44/7/4, while giving up 24/3/12 to LaMelo Ball, and 28/8/12 to Fred VanVleet. In his last four games, Trae Young has scored 30 or more points in three appearances. Moreover, he has averaged 28.3/3.5/9.3 on 48% shooting. With the Hawks ranked 5th in the NBA in pace, this offense will be one to focus on.

Houston Rockets @ Sacramento Kings (OTB)

Despite their opponent’s success in the standings, they still rank 24th in the NBA in defensive rating. Moreover, they rank 4th in pace, creating an elite game environment for a young Rockets offense. In their last ten games, the Kings have also allowed 120.9 points per game, so there is plenty of intrigue here. Despite a tough matchup on paper versus Domantas Sabonis, Alperen Sengun will be needed to match his fellow center’s minutes. Moreover, the Kings rank 29th in the NBA in points allowed in the paint. Over his last five games, Sengun has scored in double digits each time. Moreover, he has averaged 15.6/7.6/3.2 on 51.9% shooting during that span. If the matchup is concerning for your lineups, both Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green have a ton of upside in this matchup, with the former being the preferred target.

Sacramento Kings (OTB)

On the season, the Rockets rank 28th in the NBA in defensive rating, allowing nearly 116 points per game. Moreover, they rank last in the league against primary ball handlers. De’Aaron Fox has been playing at an all-star level this year. He leads the team in usage rate at 29.2% and scoring with 23.8 points per game. Moreover, Fox has scored 20 or more points in 11 of his last 13 appearances, averaging 26.4/3.8/7.1 on 50.4% shooting. This is also a tremendous matchup for Kevin Huerter. The Rockets allow a league-worst 14.3 three-pointers per game. On the season, Huerter has been lights out from behind the arc. He has averaged three three-pointers made per game, shooting 42% from deep. He has 11th in the NBA in three-pointers made per game, while being 14th in shooting percentage.

Following the theme of the new year, there are numerous studs already ruled out for tonight’s NBA slate. However, there are marquee names nearing their returns, while others look to step up in their teammates’ absences. It’s a Taco Tuesday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Detroit Pistons @ Philadelphia 76ers (-9.5)

Detroit Pistons (+9.5)

In the absence of Bojan Bogdanovic, the Pistons offense will be searching for answers. There will be plenty of shots to go around, with a few benefactors. Killian Hayes continues to lead the charge in a surprisingly deep backcourt. While Philadelphia leads the NBA in defensive rating versus primary ball handlers, Hayes figures to be in for a ton of work tonight. Over his last three games, Hayes has logged 35 minutes per night, averaging 17.7/3/8.7 on 51.2% shooting. Moreover, Hamidou Diallo, Saddiq Bey, and Alec Burks make for intriguing options with Bogdanovic out. If Joel Embiid remains out for Philadelphia, Isaiah Stewart has a tremendous matchup versus Montrezl Harrell.

Philadelphia 76ers (-9.5)

Exposure to the 76ers offense in contingent on the availability of Joel Embiid. Should the face of the franchise return to the lineup after missing the last three games, both he and James Harden will be able to roll this offense efficiently versus the Pistons. However, if Embiid sits out another game, James Harden figures to be one of the more popular options on the NBA slate. Detroit currently ranks 29th in the NBA versus primary ball handlers, struggling mightily since Cade Cunningham went down with a season-ending injury. Over his last eight games, Harden has scored 20 or more points in seven appearances. Moreover, he has averaged 23.1/6.1/11.9 on 41.6% shooting during that span. Harden is only in consideration should Embiid miss this game.

Phoenix Suns @ Golden State Warriors (-4.5)

Phoenix Suns (+4.5)

No team in the NBA has as depleted of a rotation as the Suns. Tonight, they will be without Devin Booker, Chris Pauk, Cam Johnson, and Cam Payne. Moreover, Deandre Ayton, Landry Shamet, and Torrey Craig are all listed as questionable to play. This is not a question about statistics, per minute fantasy output, usage rate, or anything else. Rather, the Suns that do find themselves suiting up will be popular solely because there will be so few of them. Both Damion Lee and Duane Washington Jr. will see a ton of minutes in the backcourt, with the latter being a must play in all formats.

Golden State Warriors (-4.5)

Depending on how the Suns injury report shakes out, the Warriors will approach the game accordingly. Steph Curry is nearing a return from a shoulder injury, while Andrew Wiggins returned to the lineup the other night after missing 15 games. Golden State needs to get their best players back into rhythm, while prioritizing their long term health. One player that has been routinely in NBA lineups for our team has been Anthony Lamb. In the absence of Jonathan Kuminga, Lamb has been tremendous off the Warriors bench. Over his last three games, Lamb has logged over 31 minutes per night. Moreover, he has scored 17 or more points in each appearance, averaging 20/5.7/3.3 on 53.7% shooting, including 40% from behind the arc on 3.3 three-pointers made per game.

Dallas Mavericks @ Los Angeles Clippers (-2.5)

Dallas Mavericks (+2.5)

It’s forever been a matchup to pick on: primary ball handlers versus the Clippers. This season is no different than in years past, with Los Angeles ranked 26th in the NBA against the player type. On the other side of the ball, there’s a pretty good ball handler in Luka Doncic that the Clippers have to deal with. Leading the league with a 38.5% usage rate, Doncic has averaged 34/8.8/8.7 on 49.9% shooting this season. It’s a challenge in its own to get Doncic into NBA lineups on all fantasy sites, but his upside is like no other player in the league.

Los Angeles Clippers (-2.5)

In the absence of Paul George, Kawhi Leonard will be a must play on this NBA slate. On the season, Leonard has averaged 17.3/5.9/3.8 on 46.4% shooting through a 25.9% usage rate. However, he has been limited in both playing time and games played. With his teammate off the floor this season, Kawhi sees bumps in both output and usage rate. The former increases from 1.14 fantasy points per minute to 1.25 fantasy points per minute, while the latter jumps from 25.9% to 29.2%, leading the team. Not only does he have a high ceiling in an elite game environment, but his safe floor makes him one of the best targets of the slate.

Although there are several stars missing in action tonight, there are still many elite matchups. Moreover, this NBA slate has potential to have several high scoring affairs. It’s a Mojito Monday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

New Orleans Pelicans @ Washington Wizards (-1.5)

New Orleans Pelicans (+1.5)

With key contributors out of each of these teams’ respective lineups, usage will be plentiful for others. Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram remain out for the Pelicans, who are surprisingly underdogs to the Wizards in this one. Once again, CJ McCollum figures to be one of the most popular players on this NBA slate. On the season, the point guard sports a 26.3% usage rate and 1.10 fantasy points per minute. However, with both Williamson and Ingram off the court, McCollum sees increases to a usage rate of 31.6% and produces 1.24 fantasy points per minute. Moreover, in his last two games, McCollum has averaged 28/3.5/6 on 44.4% shooting.

Washington Wizards (-1.5)

While Bradley Beal remains out for the Wizards, both Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma will shoulder the load on offense. However, there is another Washington player that continues to fly under the radar. Lately, Daniel Gafford has been playing excellent basketball. While he has always been a productive player on a per-minute basis, he has finally gotten enough time on the court to flourish. Startling alongside Porzingis has allowed Gafford to draw easier matchups on both ends of the court. Thus, he has been much more productive. Over his last five games, Gafford has logged 25 or more minutes in every contest. Moreover, he has averaged 13.6/8.2/1.8 on 75% shooting, despite the low usage rate and field goal attempts. New Orleans currently ranks 22nd in the NBA against centers, while allowing nearly 50 points in the paint per game.

Los Angeles Lakers @ Denver Nuggets (-8.5)

Los Angeles Lakers (+8.5)

Make no mistake about it, this organization runs through LeBron James. However, with the absences of both Lonnie Walker IV and Austin Reeves, both Russell Westbrook and Dennis Schroder have been tremendous in their respective roles. With the former continues to come off the bench, he is the favorite for Sixth Man of the Year. Over his last two games, Westbrook has averaged 20.5/8/12 through a 25.6% usage rate while logging over 32 minutes per night. Moreover, Schroder has been efficient in the starting lineup. While logging over 32 minutes per contest in each of his last five appearances, Schroder has averaged 21.4/2.6/3.8 on 50.8% shooting. Both Schroder and Westbrook have upside against a Denver defense that ranks 20th in the NBA versus secondary ball handlers.

Denver Nuggets (-8.5)

If there is a stud at the top of the pricing grid on this NBA slate that can lead it in scoring, it’s Nikola Jokic. Not only has the back-to-back MVP led his squad to the #1 seed in the Western Conference thus far, but he has been just as dominant as past years. Over his last ten games, Jokic has posted five triple-doubles. Moreover, he has averaged 25.6/10.4/10.8 on 59.4% shooting during that span. Without Anthony Davis guarding the paint, the Lakers interior defense has crumbled. They now sit 28th in the NBA versus true centers, while being ranked 24th in points allowed in the paint per game.

Orlando Magic @ Sacramento Kings (-5.5)

Orlando Magic (+5.5)

The Magic are still a rebuilding team but they can put up a fight with a healthy roster. Despite missing Bol Bol tonight, they have Jalen Suggs back and their suspended players have all returned. Paolo Banchero continues to lead the Rookie of the Year race, but his point/dollar upside is limited. Thus, this slate is more suited for Franz Wagner. Currently, Sacramento ranks last in the NBA against wings. Moreover, Wagner comes into this one having scored 20 or more points in three straight contests. During that span, Wagner has averaged 24.7/2.7/4.3 on 54.9% shooting, while leading the team in minutes per game.

Sacramento Kings (-5.5)

There are many ways to get exposure to one of the most enticing offenses of the NBA slate. At the top of the pricing grid, both Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox continue to perform at an All-Star level no matter what their individual matchups are. Moreover, Kevin Huerter has scored in double digits in five straight contests. Meanwhile, with Paolo Banchero switching onto Domantas Sabonis tonight, Keegan Murray has a friendly matchup versus Wendell Carter Jr., who sports a 114.3 defensive rating on the season. Of the four listed targets, Sabonis and Fox are in their own category. However, Huerter and Murray both have upside in an elite game environment, despite being reliant on their scoring output.

There are a ton of good matchups on the NBA schedule tonight. Unfortunately for fans, many stars of the game have already been ruled out. However, this makes this slate interesting for fantasy purposes. It’s a Fajita Friday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Brooklyn Nets @ New Orleans Pelicans (+4.5)

Brooklyn Nets (-4.5)

No NBA team is on a better run than the Nets. Before losing to the Bulls the other night, Brooklyn had strung together 12 wins in a row and are now 12-1 in their last 13 games. During that stretch, the duo of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving have been phenomenal. The two lead the team in usage rate at 32.1% and 30.9%, respectively. Moreover, they have combined for 59 points per game. With Zion Williamson out for the Pelicans, Kevin Durant has a tremendous matchup versus the Pelicans’ wings. However, Kyrie Irving has scored 20 or more points in 11 of the team’s last 13 games, averaging 28.9/6.1/5.1 on 52.9% shooting. The two will combine for a ton of shots tonight, and either one makes for a great play.

New Orleans Pelicans (+4.5)

In the absence of both Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, the Pelicans duo of CJ McCollum and Jonas Valanciunas will be two of the most rostered players on the NBA slate. However, expectations need to be tempered. The Nets are no longer a team that can be easily beat in their own half of the court. Over the last ten games, they have the third-best defensive rating in the league. Moreover, they are now a top-10 defense in the NBA. Despite the interior presences of Nic Claxton and Ben Simmons, Valanciunas has the higher upside between he and his teammate. Over his last six games, Valanciunas has four double-doubles and has averaged 12.7/11.2/1.8 on 44.9% shooting.

Washington Wizards @ Oklahoma City Thunder (-1.5)

Washington Wizards (+1.5)

This game will be overlooked on a large NBA slate and it really should not be. Not only is it one of the best game environments, but a key injury to Bradley Beal opens up this Washington rotation. The Thunder currently rank 26th in the NBA against true centers, and we want to exploit their interior defense. On the season, Kristaps Porzingis has a 27.5% usage rate and 1.28 fantasy points per minute. However, with Beal off the court, these increase to a 29.8% usage rate and 1.34 fantasy points per minute. If you are reluctant to commit to KP at the top of the pricing grid, Daniel Gafford makes for an intriguing tournament play, as does Rui Hachimura, only if Gafford (elbow) misses this game.

Oklahoma City Thunder (-1.5)

By now, everyone should know just how good Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been playing this season. He is far and away the top talent and fantasy player on a rebuilding Thunder team. However, similarly to Porzingis, there are other options if the salary is worrisome. In the absence of two frontcourt players, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Aleksej Pokusevski, the field has been searching for a replacement big man. However, it has been Josh Giddey that has reaped the benefits. Not only is he the leading rebounder on the team, but he has seen an increase in both scoring and usage rate. Over his last four games, Giddey has three 20-point efforts. Moreover, he has averaged 20.5/7.3/3.5 on 53.2% shooting, seeing a notable increase in shot attempts over his season average.

Los Angeles Clippers @ Minnesota Timberwolves (OTB)

I wanted to touch on this game because the Clippers are on the second half of a back-to-back. At the time of writing, Paul George is questionable for their game against the Nuggets. Moreover, Kawhi Leonard is a rest candidate on the second half of a back-to-back, as is John Wall, Nic Batum, and Marcus Morris. If the dominos fall with a lengthly injury report, this will be the spot for the majority of the value on a large NBA slate. Look for updates in Discord.

Minnesota Timberwolves (OTB)

There is no greater disappointment in the NBA than the Timberwolves. Despite the acquisition of Rudy Gobert in the offseason, Minnesota is actually performing worse on both ends of the court this season. However, with Karl-Anthony Towns still nursing a calf injury, there are many touches to go around on offense. Anthony Edwards will continue to lead the charge, however the Clippers boast two of the best defenders in the league in Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. Should both end up sitting, Edwards carries much more upside. Elsewhere, Rudy Gobert has been the primary cause for concern over this roster. However, with a friendly matchup against a Clippers defense that ranks 22nd against centers and 18th in points allowed in the paint, he makes for an intriguing pivot to a popular Jonas Valanciunas.

Star-studded matchups and teams on the tail end of back-to-backs headline tonight’s action in the NBA. It’s a Thirsty Thursday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Memphis Grizzlies @ Orlando Magic (+6.5)

Memphis Grizzlies (-6.5)

Both of these teams are on the second half of a back-to-back so things will get interesting on the defensive side of the ball. Steven Adams has been dominant on the glass as of late and gets a friendly matchup on both sides of the court. He has three double-doubles in his last four games, averaging 11/19/2.8 on 52.8% shooting. Moreover, the backcourt of Ja Morant and Desmond Bane will be able to work this offense in comfortable fashion, with the latter having a ton of upside on this small NBA slate.

Orlando Magic (+6.5)

The Magic rotations returns to full strength with everyone having served their suspensions. While Bol Bol missed last night’s game as expected, he is a strong candidate to sit once again tonight. Additionally, there are potential rest candidates in Wendell Carter Jr. and Jalen Suggs. There is intrigue to be had despite the tough matchup versus a Grizzlies defense that ranks second in the NBA. Look for updates in Discord once the final injury report comes through.

Utah Jazz @ Houston Rockets (+5.5)

Utah Jazz (-5.5)

This is the best game environment on the NBA slate. Utah comes into tonight having lost a heartbreaker to Sacramento and five straight games, but their offense has been tremendous, averaging 121 points over their last three. Malik Beasley was at the forefront of Tuesday’s article and he came through with 16/6/2 in 30 minutes of play for 33 fantasy points. He is once again in a great spot tonight with Collin Sexton out, as is the trio of Markkenen, Clarkson, and Conley.

Houston Rockets (+5.5)

On the second half of a back-to-back, Eric Gordon is a potential rest candidate for the Rockets. Should he miss this game, the bench gets awfully thin after Tari Eason. It won’t be the first time he’s mentioned and certainly won’t be the last: this is a tremendous spot for Alperen Sengun. On the season, the sophomore is averaging 14.3/8.5/2.6 on 55.1% shooting. With the Jazz ranked 29th in the NBA against centers, Sengun is set to dominate the paint on both ends of the floor.
