Max Scherzer @ Miami Marlins

DraftKings $12,400, FanDuel $12,200

A pitcher in Miami is always someone to look at for DFS purposes. Seeing that it’s Mad Max makes it 10x sweeter. Miami is already a pitcher’s ballpark and getting someone who has one of the highest upsides in all of MLB is that much prettier. On the road this season Scherzer holds a 2.76 ERA and a dazzling 13.01 K/9. He also has been completely dominant (.206 BAA) against righties with a 13.22 K/9. There’s zero reason to pivot off Scherzer here in DFS cash games. You can make a case for it in GPPs, but I wouldn’t even do it then on this slate.

Gerrit Cole vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

DraftKings $11,500, FanDuel $11,500

Cole has had a shaky season to say the least. Sometimes he seems untouchable and then he just blows up the next time out. He has been a tad worse ERA wise at home, but most of that is him giving up the long ball. Like Max Scherzer, Cole has amazing K/9 numbers sitting at a 14.30 K/9 at home. The Pirates don’t have a ton of strikeouts, but they do have the ability to swing and miss with the best of them. As a great DFS pivot off Schrezer for GPPs, I love Cole. As for cash, Scherzer is still the DFS play for me.

Jack Flaherty vs. Oakland Athletics

DraftKings $7,900, FanDuel $7,900

This DFS price is a complete joke. At home this season Flaherty holds a 2.49 ERA with a 10.15 K/9. This DFS price is completely reflective on his road ERA (6.68) and I’m taking full advantage. I’ll say this, Flaherty is a stone cold lock for me on DraftKings in all formats for my SP2 and is in strong consideration on FanDuel if I wanna pay down.  Flaherty does struggle against lefties, but Oakland isn’t really lefty heavy and the ones they have down really care me. Against righties this season he holds a .206 BAA and a 11.49 K/9. Lock, lock, lock, lock.

Trevor Richards vs. Washington Nationals

DraftKings $8,000, FanDuel $7,800

This would be a DFS SP2 option if for some reason you haven’t fallen in love with Flaherty or you would like a pivot. Like I said before, I love playing pitchers in Miami because of the ballpark. The Nationals offense to me at least isn’t too scary, especially in Miami. He has a respectable 3.76 ERA at home with a 6.66 K/9. This is just a safe 15 DK point DFS option for me if Flaherty scares you off.

DFS PROS Jason Mezrahi and Matt Striker are featured in the 6/25 MLB DFS Podcast. Listen to get caught up on who they are planning to play tonight. They break down the large 15-game slate and Matt tries to explain how he feels about the New York Mets.

Is Max Worth Top Dollar?

The first decision you have to make on this slate is to pay up for the top end pitching or not. Max Scherzer and Gerrit Cole are the clear-cut aces, but you will have to pay to play. There are value guys but they each garner some risk. Madison Bumgarner, Robbie Ray, Jack Flaherty, Chris Bassitt, and Andrew Heaney can present some value. They all make sense if you can stomach putting your money at risk. Is it worth it when you know Mad Max is staring you down with two different colored eyes? So listen closely to the 6/25 MLB DFS Podcast to find the hidden gems on the Daily Fantasy Baseball Slate.

Clayton Kershaw vs. San Francisco Giants

DraftKings $11,200, FanDuel $10,700

We all know Clayton Kershaw isn’t vintage Kershaw anymore, but he still possesses that crazy upside. At home this season Kershaw holds a 2.58 ERA and a 8.82 K/9. Although his strikeout rate isn’t eye-popping, he has scored over 20 points in three of his last four home games. He gets a Giants offense who we all know is awful. No bat scares me, as it shouldn’t scare you. I’m locking and load on Kershaw, especially if he’s going to be low owned.

Justin Verlander @ Cincinnati Reds

DraftKings $11,900, FanDuel $12,000

Verlander has been nothing short of spectacular this season. As Verlander has scored at least 30 points in five of his last seven games, nothing should change here. So far this season, as a reverse splits pitcher, he is holding left-handed bats to a spectacular .116 BAA and has a 12.91 K/9 rate vs. them. The Reds lineup always has the ability to pop off at any moment, but they also strike out a lot. Neutralizing Winker and Votto would be huge for Verlander and with his numbers against lefties, I don’t see why it won’t be smooth sailing all night.

Cole Hamels vs. Chicago White Sox

DraftKings $10,500, FanDuel $8,600

Hamels has been completely spectacular at home this season. as he holds a 2.58 ERA with a .200 BAA. With a K/9 pushing 10 he shows the stability and upside I’m looking for here. The White Sox strike out frequently every single game. The big thing here is that Hamels has a .217 BAA against lefties and a .227 BAA against righties.

Jack Flaherty vs Miami Marlins

DraftKings $8,700, FanDuel $8,000

I’m always interested in pitchers against the Marlins regardless of the ballpark. Jack Flaherty is a major home/away splits pitcher. At home this season he has a 2.25 ERA as opposed to a 6.68 ERA on the road. He holds a 10.13 K/9 at home this year, so the upside and stability is here. Flaherty, is my favorite option on the slate price wise. There are zero hitters on the Marlins to ever worry about. He is GPP and cash viable.

Absolutely no weather issues (again!) for today.

Upper-Tier Arms

Max Scherzer, Nationals at Padres ($11,700 FD, $12,000 DK): Scherzer comes into this matchup smoking hot, striking out 15 in eight innings of one-run ball in his last start against the Reds, although he needed 120 pitches to do so. So the Nationals gave their ace an extra day’s rest. The Padres come into this matchup striking out the most often of any MLB team against righties, at 26.8%. Though you will struggle to get the bats you want in your lineup, he has to be given cash consideration.

Lucas Giolito, White Sox at Royals ($11,400 FD, $11,200 DK): There is no doubt in my mind that Giolito can be considered an ace. On FD, he has scored at least 55 fantasy points in three consecutive starts. And taking a rain-shortened start against the Blue Jays on May 18th, he has recorded at least 52 in his last five. Coming off this amazing roll, he was named AL Pitcher of the Month for May and Player of the Week last week. Giolito has given up just five runs in 43.2 innings over his past six starts. The Royals are not the paper-cut-you-to-death team of years past that simply didn’t strike out. They are 19th in the league with their 22.4% strikeout rate against righties. Much like Mad Max above, he is worth of cash consideration though roster construction will be challenging.

Middle-Tier Arms

Jack Flaherty, Cardinals at Cubs ($8,100 FD, $9,000 DK): You get a cash game pitcher on FD with that price! Flaherty was cruising in his last start, at home against this same Cubs team, striking out eight batters while giving up four hits and two runs, until the rain came and limited his start to five innings. Speaking of the rain and other aspects of the weather, a crucial component of any game at Wrigley is the weather and today we get a wind blowing in from right at 10-20 mph with no chance of any rain. The Cubs strike out the 15th most frequently vs. righties at 23.1% and over the last seven days, they are whiffing 26.6% of the time, which is the sixth most frequent in MLB.

Jon Lester, Cardinals at Cubs ($7,700 FD, $7,400 DK): Cash worthy on both sites because of his floor, Lester is sure happy to be pitching in Wrigley. His eyes must light up when he sees he is pitching at home this season, because his splits are dramatic. In 30.2 innings at Wrigley he has only given up two home runs and has a 1.76 ERA. On the road, he has surrendered five big flies in only 29 innings pitched with a 4.97 ERA. Maybe his strikeout to walk ratio is most telling: 32 to 4 at home, 24 to 10 away.

Bargain Basement Arm

Nick Pivetta, Reds at Phillies ($7,300 FD, $8,800 DK): Well, maybe bargain basement only applies to FD in this case, but making my prelim lineups on that site, Pivetta is who I am going with. He is coming off one of the best starts of his career Sunday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, allowing three hits and striking out nine in six scoreless innings. The Reds strike out the eighth most frequently at 24.6% against righties and the 10th in the last seven days, at 24.3%. Pivetta seemed to have found himself at the Triple A level and has carried that back to the Majors.

Monkey Knife Fight Picks of the Day

Nick Pivetta over 6.5 strikeouts

I just wrote about Pivetta above, so let’s double down on him! Seriously though, in his two starts since his recall from AAA, he has struck out 15 batters in only 11 innings. If he can last six innings, he should have no problem reaching seven strikeouts.
