Australian Rules Football: ZakPRB AFL Check Marks 6.19

Welcome to ZakPRB AFL Check Marks 6.19. I have loved this sport since I first saw the Grand final while I was traveling on a bus tour throughout Europe with a clan of Australians. With the holdout in North America, I couldn’t find a better time to deeper look in into the world of footy! If you are wondering how this game is played, I have written a North American Guide to AFL that can be found here. Let’s drop the ball on today’s action. All lines are from Draftkings Sportsbook.

Welcome back AFL! We will be taking a bit of a different look at this column as we will be adding some players for DFS interest as it is now playable on Draftkings! Fantastic news! Let’s take a look at the Thursday Slate.

Check marks and exes: Round 3 (0-2)

The Richmond Tigers apparently decided to bring their B game last night and put up their second stinker since the return. Will keep this in mind moving forward

Western Bulldogs (+125) vs GSW Giants (-152) over/under 137.5 (-112)

Coming into round three, both of these teams are coming off of losses. The Western Bulldogs had a 37 point loss (88-49) to seventh place St.Kilda. The GSW Giants s had a 20 point set back (80-60) to the second ranked North Melbourne Kangaroos. Currently seated in the ninth spot in the ladder the GSW Giants defeated the eighteenth ranked Western Bulldogs 113-55. As both teams have been preforming to expectations, this line is a little bit odd to me. The average points for favour the giants by a 82.5 to 41.5 margin (41pts). The defensive average points against also is in favour of GSW to the tune of 76.5 to 87 (10.5pts)

My consensus for this match is to take the GSW Giants on the money line (-152).

Draftkings DFS notes:

As this is brand new to North America there isn’t much information on players. However we do have a points system and player layout.

How does AFL scoring work?
Lineups will consist of 9 players scoring points based on the below:

PlayersScoring
Forwards 2Goal +6 Pts
Midfielders 4Tackle +4 Pts
Defenders 2Kick +3 Pts
Ruck 1Mark +3 Pts
Handball +2 Pts
Hit Out +1 Pts
Behind +1 Pts
Free Kick For +1 Pts
Free Kick Against -3 Pts

Now that we know the point structure, let’s look at some of the DFS plays that will hopefully give us an edge. Just to note, there is only 4 players on the bench so even though the lock is in the middle of the night, you should have a pretty good chance that the normal starters will start. If there is an (I) after the name, that refers to them being an Interchange player for the game. This referring to them coming off the bench.

KBO Matchups

  • HAN @ NCD
  • LOT @ KT
  • DOO @ LG
  • SK @ KIW
  • SAM @ KIA

Kings ofthe Hill

Chang MoKoo (L), NCD – $9,400 DK / $26 FD

After havinghis start rained out yesterday, Chang Mo Koo is back on today’s KBO slate. Here’swhat I wrote up for his matchup versus KIA yesterday:

Koo is far and away thebest target on the KBO slate, both pitchers and batters included. Through 7starts, the NCD southpaw is 5-0, posting a 0.75 ERA, 2.36 FIP, 0.69 WHIP, and awhopping 30.1% strikeout rate. We’ve seen multiple pitchers surpass the 10Kprice tag on DK and how Koo is only $9,400 is truly mind-blowing. He could be100% owned and I’d still lock him into ALL of my lineups, without anyhesitation whatsoever.

Tonight, we get him $4 cheaper on FanDuel and at the same price tag on DK, but he also gets a matchup versus Hanwha instead of KIA. Yes, if I would’ve played him in all of my KBO lineups yesterday, you can only imagine what my exposure will look like today (hint: 100%). Lock on both sites.

Drew Gagnon(R), KIA – $7,800 DK / $26 FD

I wanted to avoid Gagnon on yesterday’s KBO slate given that he was starting versus a potent NC Dinos lineup, but with the game being rained out, he now finds himself in the SP2 slot of Kings of the Hill.  Gagnon is 3-3 on the season thus far to go along with a 3.57 ERA, 2.54 FIP, 1.07 WHIP, and a stellar 27.4% strikeout rate. He gets a much friendlier matchup versus Samsung here tonight and could see 7+ strikeouts en route to a 20+ DK points performance.

GPP Options:Ja SeongBae (R), KT, Seung Won Moon (R), SK

TheBatter’s Box

LG Twins

It’s now been 5 days in a row that the LG Twins find themselves in The Batter’s Box and no, it’s not because I like repeating myself or because I don’t feel like changing teams. In the past 4 days that they’ve been featured here, LG has scored 35 runs on 53 hits. Now, they even have their best slugger in Roberto Ramos back healthy and slotted in the cleanup spot. Facing Young Ha Lee of the Doosan Bears, the Twins could be in for a big night; Lee is sporting a 1-3 record with a 5.22 ERA, 4.41 FIP, and 12.2% walk rate. This one could get ugly.

Topoptions: Roberto Ramos (1B), Hyun Soo Kim (OF), Eun Sung Chae (OF), Chun WoongLee (OF), Kang Nam Yoo (C), Ji Hwan Oh (SS)

NC Dinos

After having a day off yesterday because of the rainout versus KIA, NC should be rested and ready to explode at their home park. NCD carries decent to heavy ownership levels on every KBO slate, even in the toughest of matchups. However, tonight they see Bum Soo Kim of the Hanwha Eagles on the mound in what should be a bullpen game for the Eagles. On the season, Kim has come out of the bullpen 16 times thus far, pitching 18.2 innings with a 1-3 record, 4.34 ERA, 6.55 FIP, and 1.45 HR/9. With 4 of the 5 names listed below having a favorable righty versus lefty split and one of the best hitters in the KBO in Sung Bum Na, yeah, I’ll have a ton of NCD tonight.

Top Options:Sung Bum Na (OF), Eui Ji Yang (C), Jin Sung Kang (1B/OF), Aaron Altherr (OF),Suk Min Park (3B)

HonorableMention: Doosan Bears

This article focuses on 6/18 La Liga Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so we can gain an edge on the field at large.

6/18 La Liga

We are coming off a big soccer day with the return of EPL but now it’s back to La Liga. We have a two game slate with the later matchup between Real Madrid and Valencia, the headliner. Real Madrid comes in as a strong -265 home favorite, but this game won’t necessarily be a walk in the park for them. In the earlier game, Real Sociedad is a -110 favorite against Alaves.

Eden Hazard is back for Real Madrid and trying to compensate for what has otherwise been a lost season for him. With one less game played, Real Madrid sit five points short of Barcelona in the La Liga Table.

6/18 La Liga Best Bet

Real Sociedad (-104) at Alaves (+315) – Under 3 Goals (-120) – 2:00 PM ET – Thursday 6/18 – *REAL SOCIEDAD*

DraftKings | FanDuel

The Betting Game Plan

Alaves is in the bottom third in scoring in La Liga and the home edge here is negated by no fans. I think when compared to the Real Madrid game with the odds on RM so high, there is more value with this bet and the -104 money line odds on RS. It is not however without risk so I would not combine it with a second higher risk play on a parlay. If you can hold your horses for one more day, Barcelona is much safer.

6/18 DraftKings Point Per Dollar Rankings

Top Five

  • 1. Toni Kroos – Real Madrid – $8,500 – It is concerning that he only had four points outside of his goal last time out. Particularly given the fact he only has four goals across 25 appearances this season. However, Kroos still handles the set pieces for Real Madrid and generally gives us a higher floor than the other options.
  • 2. Karim Benzema- Real Madrid – $8,600 – Benzema has been struggling as of late, but still has -124 goal scoring odds, according to the DraftKings sportsbook. With Real Madrid favored once again, this is a great chance for him to snap out of the recent funk.
  • 3. Eden Hazard – Real Madrid – $8,000 – If Eden Hazard is back to his old self and finally getting acclimated at Real Madrid, this price tag is an absolute bargain. The breakout is happening any game now and it could be this one. Hazard has +161 scoring odds, second best on the slate.
  • 4. Marcelo – Real Madrid – $6,200 – Normally, I’d think Marcelo would get to rest up after starting last game and Mendy and Carvajal would be in there. However, Carvajal got dinged up “more below” so it might be Marcelo time once again. He just sends in loads of crosses, hoping to make the magic happen.
  • 5. Ferland Mendy – Real Madrid – $5,500 – Dani Carvajal was injured and left halfway in last game. Mendy has been a usual starter anyway. Across 70-90 minutes he gives us a nice floor, playing as a wingback.

Best of the Rest

  • 6. Willan Jose/Alexander Isak – Real Sociedad – $6,800/$7,000 – Whichever one is in, both have the best goal odds outside of Benzema and Hazard listed above.
  • 7. Vinicius Junior/Rodrygo- Valencia – $6,300 – It is unlikely Gareth Bale would start at this point, given his sour relationship with the club. So it is likely one of these two on the wing opposite Hazard. They both make for terrific tournament plays.
  • 8. Martin Odegaard – Real Sociedad – $7,300 – The Barcelona loanee is a talented young player. However, without any set pieces and slumping, this seems like an overpay.
  • 9. Portu- Real Sociedad – $6,600 – Portu, unlike Odegaard, is handling set pieces for Real Sociedad. That gives him a decent floor making him a better cash play.
  • 10. Victor Camarasa – Alaves – $3,800 – Value is needed and the former EPL man at Cardiff City, fits the bill. He has not been tearing it up at Alaves but is a decent player and helps make builds fit.
  • 11. Alex Remiro – Real Sociedad – $5,300 – My favorite goalie on the slate, facing low scoring Alaves.

KBO Matchups

  • KT @ SK
  • LG @ HAN
  • LOT @ KIW
  • NCD @ KIA
  • SAM @ DOO

Kings ofthe Hill

Chang MoKoo (L), NCD – $9,400 DK / $30 FD

I don’t feel the need to go into immense detail about just how dominant Chang Mo Koo has been thus far in the 2020 KBO season, but I’ll do it, nonetheless. Koo is far and away the best target on the KBO slate, both pitchers and batters included. Through 7 starts, the NCD southpaw is 5-0, posting a 0.75 ERA, 2.36 FIP, 0.69 WHIP, and a whopping 30.1% strikeout rate. We’ve seen multiple pitchers surpass the 10K price tag on DK and how Koo is only $9,400 is truly mind-blowing. He could be 100% owned and I’d still lock him into ALL of my lineups, without any hesitation whatsoever.

TylerWilson (R), LG – $8,200 DK / $26 FD

My SP2 decision came down to Tyler Wilson of the LG Twins and Drew Gagnon of the KIA Tigers. Ultimately, Wilson gets the nod on this KBO slate strictly because of Gagnon’s matchup versus the NC Dinos and their potent lineup. Wilson is 2-2 on the season, sporting a 4.21 ERA, 3.96 FIP, 18.1% strikeout rate and 7.6% walk rate. The thing is, he gets a huge bump versus a Hanwha squad that seems to be lost in all facets of the game. The last time he pitched versus the Eagles, it took him a mere 81 pitches to get through 6 innings, allowing 0 runs on 2 hits and struck out 3, good for 22.3 DK points. Does Gagnon’s 27.4% strikeout rate blow Wilson’s 18.1% rate out of the water? Absolutely. Am I willing to bet Wilson outscores Gagnon if the Twins’ staff lets him pitch 90+ times? Absolutely.

GPP Options:Drew Gagnon(R), KIA, Dan Straily (R), LOT

TheBatter’s Box

LG Twins

The LG Twins featured in The Batter’s Box 3 days in a row? You better believe it. They’ve gotten our lineups into the green and to the top of the leaderboards two KBO slates in a row, and I don’t see how tonight will be any different. Back up from the Futures League is Hanwha starter Shi Hwan Jang, and while his 23.1% strikeout rate is impressive, his 14.3% walk rate, 7.48 ERA, and 5.70 FIP are not. The Twins may strike out a few times, but they’ll get to Jang with ease. Plus, if Roberto Ramos is back in the lineup tonight, look out.

Top options: Roberto Ramos (1B) **if he plays**, Hyun Soo Kim (OF), Eun Sung Chae (OF), Chun Woong Lee (OF), Kang Nam Yoo (C), Ji Hwan Oh (SS)

SamsungLions

I hesitated to put the Lions as an honorable mention but I’m feeling a little bolder on tonight’s KBO slate in an attempt to gain some ownership advantage. Samsung faces Hui Kwan Yu of the Doosan Bears who has struggled mightily for one of the KBO powerhouses. He comes into his 8th start with a 4-1 record but has been saved by his offense on multiple occasions. He’s rocking a 4.14 ERA, 5.35 FIP, 0.97 HR/9 and a 7.9% walk rate. Did I mention he also cannot strike someone out for the life of him? He has an awful 8.5% strikeout rate and has an interesting home/road split; despite the Bears’ stadium being a pitcher’s park, Yu is 2-1 at home but has allowed 10 runs on 32 hits in 4 starts in his own park. With Samsung having 3 legit right-handed hitters in Tyler Saladino, Sang Su Kim, and Won Seok Lee, the Doosan southpaw could be in for a rough night.

Top Options:Tyler Saladino (3B/OF), Won Seok Lee (3B), Sang Su Kim (2B/3B), Ja Wook Koo(1B/OF), Hak Ju Lee (SS), Sung Gyu Lee (2B/3B)

HonorableMention: LotteGiants

Australian Rules Football: ZakPRB AFL Check Marks 6.18

Welcome to ZakPRB AFL Check Marks 6.18.

Check marks and exes:

My apologies for the lack of follow up last week. Posted some information in Discord. My province decided to open up things way before expected, so instead of putting my efforts into AFL, it went to training to return to work. However balance has been restored so let’s make some money!

Hawthorn Hawks (+145) vs Richmond Tigers (-187) over/under 132.5 (-112)

The Richmond Tigers had a dreadful start in their last game against Carlton, and battled back for the very odd 36-36 draw. The last time those teams had tied was back in 1999, so a strange result indeed! Hawthorn struggled as well last week, however their struggles continued throughout the contest, as they were defeated 108-47. The last matchup between Hawthorn and Richmond ended in a 95-59 victory for the Richmond Tigers. A 36 point victory. So far through two rounds, the Hawks have an average points for of 68.5 and an average points against of 85. Compare that to the Tigers who have an average points for of 70.5 and points against of 58. DraftKings has the handicap points spread set at 9.5 (-112).

My consensus for this match is to take Richmond on the points spread at -9.5 (-112) and hedge with Richmond on the money line (-195).

Injuries and outs:

Hawthorn Hawks: Harry Morrison

Richmond Tigers: Dustin Martin, Liam Baker

Draftkings DFS notes:
As this is brand new to North America there isn’t much information on players. However we do have a points system and player layout.

How does AFL scoring work?
Lineups will consist of 9 players scoring points based on the below:

Ruck 1Mark +3 Pts
Handball +2 Pts
Hit Out +1 Pts
Behind +1 Pts
Free Kick For +1 Pts
Free Kick Against -3 Pts

Now that we know the point structure, let’s look at some of the DFS plays that will hopefully give us an edge. Just to note, there is only 4 players on the bench so even though the lock is in the middle of the night, you should have a pretty good chance that the normal starters will start.
