Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for a Monday night and we have a 5 game playoff NHL slate to break down!

Things are being done a little differently for the playoffs. The NHL crew got together and broke down tonight’s slate in video form. You can watch “What The Puck?” with me, Allan, and Keith. We break down the slate from a DFS perspective and go over the best bets for Monday’s big slate.

NHL DFS Breakdown:

New York Islanders @ Pittsburgh Penguins

This is one of the games I want to stack up on Monday. My favorite line in this game is the Penguins’ third line. I also really like the Islanders’ top line, but I would play Beauvillier with Barzal and Eberle for a power-play stack. Pittsburgh has been taking some penalties in the last couple of games, and also Komarov is useless in fantasy.

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Montreal Canadiens

With Tavares still out due to his concussion, Toronto had to switch up their second line. I think they will be a low-owned play and a way to get exposure to Leafs without having to pay up for Matthews and Marner. As for Montreal, their second line is where I want to look. If you are playing SE or cash then I would use Jack Campbell as a pivot off Fleury. Both teams have some value on D in Edmundson (MTL) and Holl (TOR) which interest me tonight as well.

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Florida Panthers

This is another stack-up game, but it will also be popular. Both of these teams’ top lines will be pay up spots but I would rather play both team’s secondary scoring. Alex Killorn is one of the best plays in this game. In this series, Killorn has 3 goals and 4 assists and makes for a good cheap one-off as well. David Savard and Radko Gudas are two of my favorite cheap d men. Both get the fringe points and give you some much-needed salary relief on this slate

Edmonton Oilers @ Winnipeg Jets

This is probably our least favorite game on the slate. I do like Hellebuyck in net for the Jets on Monday, but other than that there isn’t much to like. Who am I kidding, you gotta love both McDavid and Draisaitl in this one. This is a must-win game for the Oilers and you better believe these two will show up. I am not stacking here though, this is a one-off type of game for me.

Minnesota Wild @ Vegas Golden Knights

Fleury is the top goalie on the slate for us and it’s not close. I do think he is ok to fade in GPP’s, especially in large-field tournaments. Outside of Kaprizov and maybe Fiala, we don’t want much from the Wild side of the game. Vegas’ second line is the top play in this game, but I don’t mind the top line being a contrarian play. Of course, both Pietrangelo and Theodore are in play for Vegas as well if you are paying up on D.

This article focuses on 5/23 NHL Picks for both DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbooks and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We analyze tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so that we can gain an edge on the field at large. Full goal-scoring odds and rankings for each position for both sites are available below.

Sunday 5/23 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot!

Both sites are passing on the early game between Carolina and Nashville and starting the main slates at 5 p.m. ET.

This leaves us with a three game slate where the Colorado Avalanche are understandably the biggest favorite.

Notable Goal Scoring Odds

Note: All odds are listed +300 or below. All odds are taken from DraftKings Sportsbook, as of the time of writing.

Main Slate – Games in Time Order

Colorado Avalanche (-229) at St. Louis Blues (+185) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total – Colorado Leads Series 3-0 – Nathan MacKinnon (-104), Mikko Rantanen (+114), Gabriel Landeskog (+170), Andre Burakovsky (+220), Joonas Donskoi (+220), Ryan O’Reilly (+225), Brandon Saad (+235), David Perron (+265), Vladimir Tarasenko (+265), JT Compher (+270), Mike Hoffman (+290), Brayden Schenn (+290), Cale Makar (+290)

So far this series has been an absolute nightmare for the Blues. Now they are one of two teams facing elimination on this slate along with the Capitals. However, as the odds might suggest, I like the Caps chances much better.

Boston Bruins (-132) at Washington Capitals (+114) – 5.5 Projected Goal TotalBoston Leads Series 3-1 – David Pastrnak (+112), Alexander Ovechkin (+133), Brad Marchand (+175), Patrice Bergeron (+200), Taylor Hall (+210), Anthony Mantha (+215), T.J. Oshie (+225), Tom Wilson (+275), Jake DeBrusk (+290), Nick Ritchie (+290), Nicklas Bäckström (+300)

Boston will be looking to finish off the Caps on the road. If picking money lines here, I’d probably be on the Washington side, expecting this series to at least go six.

Edmonton Oilers (-120) at Winnipeg Jets (+102) – 5.5 Projected Goal TotalWinnipeg Leads Series 2-0 – Connor McDavid (+116), Leon Draisaitl (+125), Kyle Connor (+165), Mark Scheifele (+188), Nikolaj Ehlers (+205), Blake Wheeler (+225), Jesse Puljujärvi (+225), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (+235), Kailer Yamamoto (+265), Pierre-Luc Dubois (+290), Darnell Nurse (+300)

I could see the Edmonton stars getting slightly less ownership than Colorado and that seems reasonable. However, they are where I would go next and on a three game slate you can certainly fade Colorado in tournaments.

This article focuses on 5/20 NHL Picks for both DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbooks and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We analyze tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so that we can gain an edge on the field at large. Full goal-scoring odds and rankings for each position for both sites are available below.

Thursday 5/20 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot as we return for our second playoff edition. It’s a Thursday in May, featuring a trifecta of series dead even after two games, as well as a game one North of the border.

Notable Goal Scoring Odds

Note: All odds are listed +300 or below. All odds are taken from DraftKings Sportsbook, as of the time of writing.

Main Slate – Games in Time Order

Florida Panthers (+128) at Tampa Bay Lightning (-148) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total – Nikita Kucherov (+125), Brayden Point (+163), Steven Stamkos (+180), Ondrej Palát (+188), Aleksander Barkov (+190), Carter Verhaeghe (+205), Alex Killorn (+235), Jonathan Huberdeau (+225), Anthony Cirelli (+245), Yanni Gourde (+245), Patric Hörnqvist (+265), Sam Bennett (+295), Alex Barre-Boulet (+300), Victor Hedman (+300)

Finally healthy, the defending champion Lightning is busy chewing bubblegum and kicking ass right now and get to take this series back home. That means trouble for the Panthers in what is a virtual elimination game for them here facing a 0-2 series deficit.

Pittsburgh Penguins (-106) at New York Islanders (-110) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total – Jake Guentzel (+155), Sidney Crosby (+163), Brock Nelson (+215), Bryan Rust (+220), Jean-Gabriel Pageau (+225), Kyle Palmieri (+225), Evgeni Malkin (+230), Mathew Barzal (+240), Anthony Beauvillier (+250), Jordan Eberle (+250), Jeff Carter (+265)

I’m going to try to put personal feelings aside here. After two extremely close games, this series now travels to Nassau Coliseum. You wouldn’t know it from the first game, but the goaltending has been spectacular. That is why I am hesitant to really attack either side of this matchup. That being said, with some of the marksmen involved, a shutout is unlikely, thus also limiting goalie upside.

Later Games

Montreal Canadiens (+170) at Toronto Maple Leafs (-200) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total – Auston Matthews (-132), Tyler Toffoli (+150), Mitch Marner (+175), Zach Hyman (+185), William Nylander (+185), John Tavares (+185), Brendan Gallagher (+205), Nick Foligno (+250), Josh Anderson (+260), Alex Galchenyuk (+265), Cole Caufield (+270), Nick Suzuki (+285), Tomas Tatar (+285), Wayne Simmonds (+300)

As mentioned earlier, this is the only game one of the night as all of the other featured series have had a pair so far. Toronto comes in heavy favorites understandably. I was sort of surprised not to see this total at six as of the time of writing. Either way, the Leafs are far and away the heaviest favorite tonight. Auston Matthews should easily have the highest ownership of any skater on the slate on both sites and in all formats.

Las Vegas Golden Knights (-112) at Minnesota Wild (-105) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total – Max Pacioretty (+150), Kirill Kaprizov (+163), Jonathan Marchessault (+180), Alex Tuch (+180), Mark Stone (+195), Kevin Fiala (+200), William Karlsson (+240), Reilly Smith (+265), Tomas Nosek (+265), Joel Eriksson Ek (+285), Mats Zuccarello (+300), Chandler Stephenson (+300)

Much like the Penguins/Islanders series, this has been another one with a pair of close games so far to open things up. Headed to Minnesota, the Golden Knights come in much smaller money line favorites than for the previous two games.

5/20 NHL FanDuel Rankings

Centers

  1. Auston Matthews – Toronto – $8,800
  2. Sam Bennett – Florida – $4,500
  3. Aleksander Barkov – Florida – $7,800
  4. John Tavares – Toronto – $7,100
  5. Brayden Point – Tampa Bay – $7,700

Wingers

  2. Max Pacioretty – Las Vegas – $7,800 – GTD
  3. Alex Tuch – Las Vegas – $4,500
  4. Zach Hyman – Toronto – $4,700
  5. Blake Coleman – Tampa Bay – $4,300

Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for a Tuesday night and we have a 3 game playoff NHL slate to break down!

Things are being done a little differently for the playoffs. The NHL crew got together and broke down tonight’s slate in video form. You can watch “What The Puck?” Episode 2 with myself, Allan, and Keith. We break down the slate from a DFS perspective and go over the best bets for Tuesday’s Game 2’s.

NHL DFS Breakdown:

New York Islanders @ Pittsburgh Penguins

This was a back and forth affair on Sunday and we expect much of the same on Tuesday. We discuss the impact on the Penguins lines if Malkin returns to the lineup. I also breakdown how I prefer to stack the Islanders on Tuesday as well. Keith tells you about how the script has flipped in the futures bets for this series after the Islanders Game 1 win.

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Florida Panthers

Sam Bennett is suspended for this game for the Panthers and Keith and I discuss the impact that will have and who may fill in for the suspended center. Allan and myself also roll through the Lightning lines and tell you which one is the best option for Tuesday

Minnesota Wild @ Vegas Golden Knights

Allan and I agree that Vegas’ second line is the way to go in this game. They are the most consisted and have the familiarity that the Golden Knights other lines don’t have. We also discuss which Wild lines might be the targets for this game.

NHL DFS Breakdown:

Boston Bruins @ Washington Capitals

This is game 2 of this series after Washington won on a Nic Dowd OT goal on Saturday. We discuss the Washington goaltending situation in the video and give you our thoughts on if you should just avoid it all together. When it comes to this game you can definitely pay up for the the top players in this game but the secondary scoring is what I will target.

Nashville Predators @ Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina is the one seed in the Central Division and will be hosting the streaking Predators. Allan and Keith both disagree with my thoughts on who wins this series, but we do agree on some of the top plays for Monday. Allan discusses his thoughts on the Hurricanes and I give you some of the better value plays from Carolina.

St. Louis Blues @ Colorado Avalanche

Whether you are playing cash or GPP’s this is our favorite game on the night. Colorado is a huge favorite both on Monday night and in the series. We all agree that if you are playing cash, load up on Colorado, but in GPP’s I give you my thoughts on the Blues value. I also give me thoughts on Binnington, which if you’ve been with us all season you already know, I am not too high on.

This article focuses on 5/16 NHL Picks for both DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbooks and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We analyze tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so that we can gain an edge on the field at large. Full goal-scoring odds and rankings for each position for both sites are available below.

Sunday 5/16 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for the first multigame slate of the 2021 NHL Playoffs.

DraftKings is running all three playoff games beginning at 12 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, the FanDuel slate only contains the late game, Florida at Tampa Bay, along with the Calgary at Vancouver regular-season game.

Notable Goal Scoring Odds

Note: All odds are listed +300 or below. All odds are taken from DraftKings Sportsbook, as of the time of writing.

Main Slate – Games in Time Order

New York Islanders (+118) at Pittsburgh Penguins (-136) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total – DRAFTKINGS ONLY – Jake Guentzel (+148), Sidney Crosby (+165), Bryan Rust (+180), Evgeni Malkin (+215), Brock Nelson (+230), Jared McCann (+240), Mathew Barzal (+250), Anthony Beauvillier (+265), Jordan Eberle (+265), Jean-Gabriel Pageau (+265), Kyle Palmieri (+295), Jason Zucker (+300)

The Islanders come into this game in really poor form, particularly offensively. However, when these teams last met in the playoffs two years the Islanders swept Pittsburgh, so should have some confidence. I think this will be the lowest scoring of the four games despite all having the same projected total.

Minnesota Wild (+138) at Las Vegas Golden Knights (-159) – DRAFTKINGS ONLY – 5.5 Projected Goal Total – Max Pacioretty (+128), Kirill Kaprizov (+160), Mark Stone (+170), William Karlsson (+205), Jonathan Marchessault (+205), Alex Tuch (+205), Kevin Fiala (+205), Reilly Smith (+230), Chandler Stephenson (+260), Joel Eriksson Ek (+285), Mattias Janmark (+295), Alex Pietrangelo (+295), Mats Zuccarello (+300)

Both Max Pacioretty and Alec Martinez are game-time decisions. However, the Golden Knights are still the biggest favorite on the slate.

Tampa Bay Lightning (-125) at Florida Panthers (+108) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total – Nikita Kucherov (+155), Brayden Point (+175), Aleksander Barkov (+180), Steven Stamkos (+190), Carter Verhaeghe (+195), Ondrej Palát (+200), Jonathan Huberdeau (+225), Patric Hörnqvist (+250), Alex Killorn (+250), Anthony Cirelli (+265), Yanni Gourde (+265), Sam Bennett (+280)

This should be an entertaining matchup between the two NHL teams from Florida. Sam Bennett gets high ranks below as a value option he is on absolute fire.

Calgary Flames (-127) at Vancouver Canucks (+110) – FANDUEL ONLY – 5.5 Projected Goal Total – Brock Boeser (+185), Matthew Tkachuk (+185), Bo Horvat (+205), J.T. Miller (+225), Elias Lindholm (+225), Johnny Gaudreau (+235), Tanner Pearson (+245), Andrew Mangiapane (+250), Dillon Dube (+300)

I’m not sure why on Earth FanDuel didn’t just create a slate with the three playoff games like DraftKings did. Nevertheless, I think there should be goals here in what’s a repeat of a matchup we have several times over the last two weeks.

Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for a Monday night and we have a big 9 game slate to break down!

This is the final Monday of the regular season, which was actually supposed to be last Monday, but thanks to COVID we get an extra week of hockey. Tonight we have a mixed bag of teams just playing out the stretch and teams fighting for playoff positions and spots. We also have two confirmed first-round playoff matchups on the slate, both in the Central Division. Tampa Bay and Florida and Carolina and Nashville will meet in the playoffs and on the ice tonight. Make sure to pay attention to any news regarding those games because we may get some lineup changes since none of these teams are playing for anything theoretically and may try to get some different players in their lineups.

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Cash Game Goalie:

To be perfectly honest there is no one goalie I like in cash tonight. There are a couple of decent plays in Mike Smith ($7,500/$8,100) on the road in Montreal and if Alex Nedeljkovic ($7,800/$8,500) in Nashville tonight for the Hurricanes. Both goalies do seem a little overpriced on FanDuel but are in two of the better spots on the slate. Robin Lehner ($7,700/$8,400) at home to the Avalanche could also be a safe play IF Nathan MacKinnon is out again. For cash games tonight it seems like a wait-and-see approach for any late news about who may or may not start in net and be sitting out for teams.

GPP Goalie:

Ilya Sorokin ($7,300/$8,000)

This is a very important game for both the Islanders and Bruins to determine playoff seeding, and because of this, I assume both teams will be treating it as such. Sorokin has been great in net for the Isles this season as a rookie. In his last five starts, Sorkin has averaged 27.4 saves and is averaging 2.2 goals allowed.

Boston is a high-powered offense as we all know and they have been averaging 3.7 goals per game in their 10 games which is why Sorokin is a GPP play. Even though Boston scores a lot of goals, they also take a ton of shots and are allowing over 30 saves per game. You also need to look at who Boston has played in their last ten games. Eight of those ten were against the bottom of their division (4 games vs Buffalo, and 2 each vs NJ and NYR) and only two against a playoff team, the division-winning Penguins. If Semyon Varlamov starts he is just as good of a play as Sorokin.

Other Options: Juuse Saros ($7,400/$7,600), MacKenzie Blackwood ($7,000/$6,800), Thatcher Demko ($6,900/$6,700), Cal Petersen ($7,200/$7,100)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

When it comes to picking the lines I want to stack and any one-off plays, I want to look at who is still playing for something. This doesn’t mean fade both of the Central Division games I mentioned in the open, or teams already of the playoffs. We know that teams like Boston, Colorado, Vegas, New York, and Montreal all have something to play for and will be playing like such.

If MacKinnon is back, then you can make a case for any of the top lines from Colorado, Boston, or Winnipeg for top-line stacks of the night. I know haven’t mentioned the Jets at all yet but they are in a good spot tonight against Vancouver and their top line is one of my favorite stacks on this slate.

If you want to be different, Edmonton’s top line will be that. Of course, the 100 point man Connor McDavid ($9,200/$9,400) will be one of the top one-offs but stacking him with his linemates will be different. Both Jesse Puljujarvi ($5,000/$4,500) and Dominik Kahun ($2,700/$3,500) will be overlooked in favor of the PP defenseman from Edmonton or Leon Draisaitl ($8,300/$8,600).

Finding Value in New Jersey (who knew?!)

Philadelphia is not a very good team defensively, I know this isn’t really news to any of you, which makes me love the Devils stacks tonight. Line 2 for New Jersey is where I want to start as they have one of the safer floors on the slate in my opinion. All three of these players are low priced on both sites and only Nico Hischier ($5,100/$4,900) is over $5K on either site. Pavel Zacha ($4,400/$4,600) is my favorite play of the three players on this line. In his last ten games, Zacha has 9 points, including three goals in his last three games. Zacha has also been great against Philly this season with four goals and three assists in seven games, the Devils winger is also averaging over two shots on goal per game against the Flyers. Jesper Bratt ($4,100/$4,200) has four points in his six games against Philadelphia this season. All three play on the Devils’ first PP unit along with Jack Hughes ($4,900/$4,700) and Will Butcher ($3,700/$3,500) on defense.

Other Top Value Stacks:

  • Florida 3 vs Tampa
  • NY Islanders 2 vs Boston
  • Dallas 2 vs Chicago — Love this line – 2 min priced plays on DK
  • Chicago 2 vs Dallas — This game is a good game stack tonight
  • Colorado 3 vs Vegas
  • Los Angeles 2 vs St. Louis — Gabe Vilardi cheap on PP1

One last thing, IF Colorado starts Johansson (as being projected at 6 am this morning when I wrote this) then STACK UP Vegas. With Patches out of the lineup all three of their top lines are cheap and will be great plays tonight.

NHL DFS: Defensemen Rankings

** Remember to always try and pair your defenseman up with forwards. One-off dmen are not usually the best option**

Top Defensemen

  1. Cale Makar (COL)
  2. Darnell Nurse (EDM)
  3. Roman Josi (NSH)
  4. Dougie Hamilton (CAR)
  5. MacKenzie Weegar (FLA)
  6. Tyson Barrie (EDM)
  7. Justin Faulk (STL) – StL2 is my top Blues stack tonight
  8. Alex Edler (VAN)
  9. Sean Walker (LA)
  10. Jeff Petry (MTL)

Top Value Defensemen:

  1. Gustav Forsling (FLA)
  2. Justin Braun (PHI)
  3. Jamie Oleksiak (DAL)
  4. Ryan Murray (NJ) – Cheaper option to using Butcher w/more upside
  5. Radko Gudas (FLA)

  7. Ethan Bear (EDM) – Plays PP2 with Kahun and Puljujarvi for a contrarian EDM stack
  8. Nick Leddy (NYI)
