**Exercise caution on these smaller slates, very little room for error and very heavy chalk. Due to size of slate players listed will be limited to two per position.

10/6 NHL DFS Centers

Tyler Johnson (TBL) – Johnson will fill in for Brayden Point who is out with a hip injury. Tampa Bay rank second coming into the 2019-20 season in terms of fantasy production. Point is a huge part of the top forward line on this team but Johnson will get a significant boost in ice time (13;47 in 2018) and he will also serve on the Lightening’s top power play unit.

Mathew Barzal (NYI) – Barzal is coming off one of the best rookie seasons in recent memory. He finished the 2018 season with 85 points (22 goals, 63 assists), and three five-point games, ranking 14th best in the NHL. The Calder Trophy winner will look to continue his success story against a Winnipeg Jets Dline that took some major losses in the off-season.

Punts – Jordan Staal (CAR)

10/6 NHL DFS Wingers

Nikita Kucherov (TBL) – Kucherov lead this NHL last season with 128 points (41 goals, 87 assists). He has increased his point total every year for the last five years but will face one of the deepest defensive lines in the NHL. Tampa Bay was the top scoring offense in 2018 with 319 goals, 30 goals more than any other team in the league.

Nicholaj Ehlers (WPG) – Despite the massive losses to Winnipeg’s defensive line, they still have one of the most formidable offenses in the NHL. They ranked 8th in 2018 with with 270 goals (243 assists). Ehlers comes in as the top value play on the board, he will be popular but chalk worth eating. Ehlers is off to a nice start in 2019 with four assists and ten shots.

Punts – Anthony Mantha (DET), Todd Bertuzzi (DET).

10/6 NHL DFS Defensemen

Ryan McDonagh (TBL) – McDonagh comes in at great price and a great matchup with Erik Cernak against the Hurricanes FL#2. McDonagh had 161 blocks, 37 assists, and nine goals in an award winning 2018 season. (NHL All-Star, James Norris Memorial Trophy). McDonagh has four blocks and one hit to start the 2019-20 NHL season.

Erik Cernak (TBL) – Erik Cernak and Ryan McDonagh are like spaghetti and meatball. Cernak didn’t have quite the 2018 season McDonagh had but he was still an enforcer on the ice with 198 hits, 79 blocks, and 11 assists. Cernak has four blocks and four hits to begin the 2019-20 season.

HM: Erik Gustafsson, P.K. Subban

10/6 NHL DFS Goalies

Andre Vasilevskiy (TBL) – Vasilevskiy is coming off of his first NHL season as the number one goalie for Tampa Bay. He finished the season tied for the most wins (44) and shut outs (eight). He also finished the season with a .920 SV% which is incredible for a 24 year old. The fact that he is putting up these types of numbers so early in his career only leaves you to wonder how good he will be this year and years to come. He comes in at a hefty price so paying down in your offensive positions will be the way to get to him on a short slate. (Curtis McElhinney may draw start)

Semyon Varlamov – Varlamov stopped 26 of 28 shots in an impressive first outing but ultimately could not get the win because his teammates could not score. Semyon offers great upside with his goal saving capability and comes in at a fair price and allows you to pay up elsewhere. Varlamov finished the 2018 season with a .909 SV% and will look to maintain a .920+ SV% in the 2019-20 season.

10/6 NHL DFS STACKS

Tampa Bay Lightening – FL#1: Tyler Johnson/Nikita Kucherov/Steven Stamkos

Winnipeg Jets – FL#1: Nicholaj Ehlers/Mark Schiefele/Blake Wheeler

Honorable Mention
New York Islanders FL#1: Mathew Barzal/Jordan Eberle/Anders Lee

10/6 NHL DFS Power Play of the Day

Tampa Bay PP1: Tyler Johnson/Steven Stamkos/Nikita Kucherov/Victor Hedman

10/4 NHL DFS Centers

Auston Matthews – Matthews is off to a hot start in 2019 after a two goal performance on opening night in NHL DFS. He comes in at a premium price, but it is well worth it as he see’s an average of 18 minutes of ice time and pairs with one of the top rated forward lines in all of hockey. Consider pairing Matthews with wingers Andreas Johnsson and William Nylander.

John Tavares – Another Toronto forward line, but Tavares, Mitch Marner, and Kasperi Kapanen are a slightly cheaper option with similar upside. I am fine with Tavares as a one-off as well but Toronto is my preferred stack tonight so I will look to pair these linemen if possible.

Punt: Alexandre Texier
Honorable Mention: Cody Glass
, Nico Hischier.

10/4 NHL DFS Wingers

Mitchell Marner– I listed Marner above as my preferred winger to stack along with John Tavares or Auston Matthews. Marner has been an absolute beast with man advantage, averaging 21 points per season during power plays.

Blake Wheeler – Wheeler and the Jets face The N.J. Devils, who were the second worst team in the Eastern Conference in terms of goal differential, surrendering 275 GA. Wheeler has been more of a distributor as of late, but still offers great scoring upside as indicated last night by scoring two goals in 22 minutes of ice time against the Rangers.

HM: Kyle Connor, Taylor Hall, Kyle Palmieri.

10/4 NHL DFS Defensemen

Morgan Rielly – As long as Rielly is priced under $6500 on FD I will always consider him in play. He was the highest scoring defender last year and is off to a hot start in the 2019-20 season with five shots, one block, and one assist. Buy low while you can cause he won’t be there for long.

Brent Burns – You definitely have to pay the price for Burns but he is well worth it if you have room to spend up. Burns ended his 2018 season with 105 blocks and averaged 25 minutes of ice time, so even if he doesn’t record a goal he still can almost always pay off his high price tag.

HM: Erik Gustafsson, P.K. Subban

10/4 NHL DFS Goalies

Marc-Andre Fleury – “The Flower” had two strong performances against San Jose during the preseason and posted good numbers throughout last season, owning a .913 SV% and a 2.51 GAA. Vegas also holds their opponents to an average of 29.3, which is the fifth-best in the league. Although goalies count on shots to rack up points, the less dangerous chances on target, the better. Not to mention Fleury had the fifth most wins of any goalie last season at 35.

Cory Schneider – Schneider comes in at a fair price tonight and is backed by one of the better defensive groups in hockey. Although he did end 2018 on a 6-13 record, he still maintains a .903 SV% which is right up there with Marc-Andre Fleury.

10/4 NHL DFS STACKS

New Jersey Devils – FL#1: Nico Hischier/Taylor Hall/Kyle Palmieri/PK Subban

Toronto Maple Leafs – FL#1: John Tavares/Mitch Marner/Kasperi Kapanen/Morgan Rielly

Honorable Mention
Vegas Golden Knights FL#1: William Karlsson /Jonathan Marchessault/Reilly Smith

10/4 NHL DFS Power Play of the Day

New Jersey PP1: Taylor Hall/PK Subban/Kyle Palmieri

10/4 NHL DFS Punts:

Alexandre Texier, Sami Vatanen, Ryan Pulock.

Hey everyone, hope your opening night was successful. We are back with another edition of the Daily Hot Shot. Tonight we have an eight-game slate to dig into with the first set of games beginning at 7 p.m. ET with the final puck drop set for 10 p.m. ET.

10/3 NHL DFS Centers

Tyler Johnson – This one has a very simple explanation. Johnson will be centering a line alongside the league’s reigning MVP Nikita Kucherov and All-Star Steven Stamkos while Brayden Point is out with an injury. Stacking him will be a little difficult but it can be done. Even if you choose to play Johnson as a one-off, that is still a strong option.

Nazem Kadri – Kadri is set to begin his first season in Colorado after being traded from Toronto during the offseason. He has already made a positive impression, notching a goal in his last preseason appearance in the lead up to opening night.

Despite having a slight off season last year, Kadri is still capable of scoring 30+ goals in a campaign and will also get an opportunity to increase his goal tally alongside Colorado’s stacked top power-play unit.

Honorable Mention: Max Domi

10/3 NHL DFS Wingers

Mats Zuccarello – Zuccarello is coming off a peak playoff performance last season, where he registered 11 points in 13 playoff games for the Dallas Stars, despite coming off an injury a month before the playoffs began. Zucc will slot into Minnesota’s top line and first power-play unit, making him an optimal stack with the likes of Matt Dumba and Zach Parise.

Andrei Svechnikov – Young phenom Svechnikov was instrumental for the Canes as he registered 20 goals in his rookie campaign in the NHL along with five points in nine playoff appearances. Svech is set to see top-line minutes as well as time on the second power-play unit. Svechnikov is also coming off a strong preseason performance, where he recorded two assists against the Capitals.
HM: Artemi Panarin

10/3 NHL DFS Defensemen

Cale Makar – We got a taste of Makar’s talent last season during the tail end of the Avs’ season during the playoff run. Jumping straight into the playoff lineup for the Avalanche, it came as a shock to some that the reigning Hobey Baker Award winner recorded six points in 10 playoff games. During the preseason he was averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game and recorded an assist in his final tune-up game. He’ll also appear on Colorado’s stacked top power play unit.

Matt Dumba – Coming off a season-ending injury from last season, Dumba is slightly undervalued in this slate and is in a position to be exploited. Last season, Dumba recorded 22 points in 32 games. He is also coming off a strong preseason performance with a goal and an assist in an OT loss to the Jets.
HM: Justin Schultz

10/3 NHL DFS Goalies

Matt Murray – Going up against the Sabres, Murray has one of the best odds on the slate and will be playing in front of the hometown fans in Pittsburgh. Murray came back into form last year after a shaky 2017-18 campaign and will be looking to improve on his numbers tonight.

Petr Mrazek – Mrazek is one of the bargain options when it comes to favored goalies tonight, as he is set to face off against the Canadiens. Mrazek is coming off one of his best seasons last year when he took charge of the Canes and held a 23-14-3 record along with a .914 SV% and a 2.39 GAA, ultimately leading Carolina to an Eastern Conference Finals appearance.
HM: Phillip Grubauer

10/3 NHL DFS STACKS

Carolina Hurricanes 1 – The Canes are rolling on momentum from an insane run last season, full of strong team performances, surprise heroes and of course post-game antics. The “Bunch of Jerks” are set to face off against a Montreal side that hasn’t made any significant improvements from last season, in fact losing a key piece in Andrew Shaw. Canadiens goalie Carey Price may be nursing a bruised hand, which was sustained during the preseason. Nevertheless, Carolina are favorites tonight and the O/U is set at 6. Considering the matchup is in Carolina, hopefully we will see a storm surge for the home opener.
HM
Tampa Bay 1

10/3 NHL DFS Power Play of the Day Winnipeg PP1
– This matchup pits last season’s fourth-best power play league-wide against the league’s fifth-worst penalty kill.
HM: Tampa Bay PP1

10/3 NHL DFS Punts
Kappo Kakko – Kakko is coming off a season in the Finnish league where he lit it up for 38 points in 45 games. This made Kakko the consensus second overall pick in last season’s draft. The Rangers have entrusted Kakko in their second power-play unit. He is easily stackable with his linemates Chris Kreider and Ryan Strome. Kakko is riskier than the punts outlined in yesterday’s article, however, Kakko also holds higher upside.
HM: Nikolaj Ehlers, Nick Suzuki

This article will dissect the main slate each day and provide analysis into which plays our experts are leaning to on each slate. Opening night will consist of four games with the first game starting at 7:00 pm EST (TOR vs OTT) and the last game starting at 10:30 pm EST (VGK vs SJS). We will cover our top 10/2 DFS NHL plays per position, stacks we are interested in, which power plays look promising and which punts are worthwhile.

Centers

Auston Matthews – Matthews is set to be one of the higher owned players for tonight’s 10/2 DFS NHL slate and rightfully so, as he showed during the preseason that he hadn’t missed a step. Matthews will also be facing off against one of the worst statistical teams and one of the worst statistical goalies last season. Matthews will center Toronto’s top line tonight and will also appear on Toronto’s top power-play unit. This matchup also has the highest O/U on the slate at 6.5. However, that still seems too low, as in their four meetings last season these teams averaged 7.75 goals per game. Finally, Ottawa also posted the worst SA/GP (shots allowed) of any team last season at 35.7, essentially leaving their goalies out to dry. Ottawa hasn’t made any significant improvements to fix those statistics. Matthews pairs well with his linemates (Johnsson and Nylander) as well as Rielly

Brayden Schenn – In his final preseason tune-up Schenn recorded a goal and two assists against his opponent tonight, the Washington Capitals. Schenn is relatively inexpensive in 10/2 DFS NHL on both sites ($5,700 on FanDuel and $4,700 on DraftKings) and will play top-line minutes along with minutes centering the top power-play unit. During the second half of the 2018-19 campaign, the Blues posted the second most amount of shots in the league at 1,479, which helped squeeze them into a playoff spot to ultimately win the Cup. Not to mention the game has an O/U of 5.5 and will be taking place in St. Louis. If you are looking for an expensive pairing, Schenn works well alongside Tarasenko. For a more cost-effective option, he is stackable with Jaden Schwartz.
Honorable Mention: Cody Glass

Wingers

Brady Tkachuk – As mentioned earlier, Tkachuk will open the season against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite being major underdogs, Brady is a bright spot in what is overall a lackluster lineup. Brady is set to see a huge chunk of the ice time tonight as well as time on Ottawa’s first power-play unit. Tkachuk recorded two assists in his last regular-season game against the Buds and considering that the Battle of Ontario generally has offense generated from both teams, it is likely that Tkachuk will get more points tonight. He pairs well alongside Connor Brown and/or Thomas Chabot.

Max Pacioretty
– Patches and the Golden Knights will face off against the San Jose Sharks. Vegas is heavily favored with a -180 line along with a high O/U of 6.0. Pacioretty recorded an assist in Vegas’ final preseason game against the Sharks, and if he is able to stay away from the penalty box, he will see around 18-20 minutes of ice time. Pacioretty will play on the second line and will also appear on Vegas’ top power-play unit. Vegas posted one of the highest average shot totals last season at 34.3 shots per game. Patches and his teammates will be facing some shaky goaltending from Martin Jones and the Sharks will likely have to compete without one of their more dangerous wingers in Evander Kane, who was suspended for three games for making contact with an official. Pacioretty pairs best alongside the uber-cheap Cody Glass.
HM: Anthony Duclair

Defensemen

Quinn Hughes – Hughes is Vancouver’s next top defensive prospect and will be looking to break out this season. In the sample of his five appearances from last season, he recorded points in three of them and averaged around 18 minutes of ice time in each appearance. Quinn is also set to see minutes on Vancouver’s second power-play unit. At Quinn’s price ($4,000 on both sites), he is definitely worth the gamble in 10/2 DFS NHL.

Morgan Rielly – He was the highest-scoring defenseman last season, and I truly believe him not being the most expensive defenseman on the slate is a joke. Take advantage of it while you can, Mo is on track to have an All-Star season. He is on Toronto’s deadly top power-play unit and saw an average of 23 minutes of ice time per game last season, but might see a slight decline with Toronto’s defensive power this season. However, Rielly is a steal at $5,700 on FanDuel and reasonably priced at $6,200 on DraftKings for 10/2 DFS NHL.
HM: Rasmus Sandin

Goalies

Marc-Andre Fleury – “The Flower” had two strong performances against San Jose during the preseason and posted good numbers throughout last season, owning a .913 SV% and a 2.51 GAA. Vegas also holds their opponents to an average of 29.3, which is the fifth-best in the league. Although goalies count on shots to rack up points, the less dangerous chances on target, the better. Not to mention Fleury had the fifth most wins of any goalie last season at 35, will be playing at home in 10/2 DFS NHL, and is favored to get the win.

Frederik Andersen – As mentioned earlier, the Leafs have the highest odds of winning with the line currently favoring them at -300. The Leafs allowed the eighth most shots against last season (33.1). Although saves directly correlate with points, that statistic gives me cause for concern with Freddy. As we saw last season, the Leafs have a tendency to rely on offense and “score their way” out of problems.
HM: Jacob Markstrom

STACKS

Toronto: (Johnsson, Matthews, Nylander) *TOP STACK*
Toronto is in an excellent spot for 10/2 DFS NHL with by far the best odds of the slate at -300. This line, in particular, has excelled during the preseason with all three forwards recording a goal. Toronto’s top line is moderately priced, allowing for another top stack to be included in your lines. On top of that, the Maple Leafs averaged 3.56 goals per game at home and held the fourth-best goals per game average in the league last season at 3.49, meaning not only were they great at scoring, but they were better scoring at home.

The final piece of information leading me to this stack is the goalie matchup. Craig Anderson will settle in between the pipes for the opening matchup, and last season Anderson held the worst GAA for goalies who played at least half of their team’s games, allowing on average 3.51 goals per game.

Vegas (Pacioretty, Glass, Stone)

The Golden Knights are also heavily favored over their opening night opponents in the San Jose Sharks, with a -180 line. In the final preseason game against the Sharks, this line was able to register a goal and an assist in the 5-1 win. If Glass remains at center it will provide extreme 10/2 DFS NHL affordability for the entire line, as he is listed at $3,600 on FanDuel and $2,800 on DraftKings. All three forwards also appear on Vegas’ top power-play unit and to top it off it will be in Vegas against a goalie who held a dismal 2.94 GAA last season (Martin Jones).
HM
: St. Louis (Schwartz, Schenn, Tarasenko)

Power Play of the Day

Toronto– This matchup pits last season’s fourth best home power play league-wide against the league’s ninth worst penalty kill.

10/2 DFS NHL Punts

Trevor Moore – Moore made some serious noise this preseason, recording three goals and an assist in his final three preseason games. Moore is set to see more ice time on the third line alongside Kerfoot and Mikheyev. All of Toronto’s third line holds value; if you’d like to stack Moore, however, I also see Moore as a viable one-off for GPPs.

Jimmy Schuldt
– At defense, Jimmy Schuldt provides value as a 10/2 DFS NHL defender who can post top-line minutes while also carrying scoring upside, as we saw in the final preseason game, Schuldt recorded a goal and an assist against tonight’s opponent, the San Jose Sharks. Schuldt pairs well alongside Vegas’s second line. I don’t see Schuldt being this cheap for too much longer.
HM: Brandon Pirri

9/11 MLB DFS Pitching and Prop Picks

On this 9/11 MLB DFS slate I would like us all to take a moment to reflect on the memories of all the lives lost on this day in America. I remember clearly where I was on that fateful day, and what I was doing. The confusion, the fear, the total disbelief. My heart goes out to all the families of the victims, may you find some peace in knowing we are all behind you always.

On the Defense

This 9/11 MLB DFS slate is rather odd in the sense that for the first time in recent memory I will not be using any bottom of the barrel SP2s on DK. I just do not see any with high enough upside.

Sonny Gray vs. Seattle Mariners

$10,200 FD / $10,600 DK

What do you get when you cross a high strikeout upside pitcher with reverse road splits, who benefits from a positive park shift, facing a team that strikes out over 25 percent of the time versus RHPs? The answer on this 9/11 MLB DFS slate is Sonny Gray, who has allowed four earned runs over his last seven starts.

StephenStrasburg vs. Minnesota Twins

$10,500 FD / $11,400 DK

I know it is hard to swallow taking anyone facing the Twins on this 9/11 MLB DFS slate. After all, they absolutely crush RHPs, and LHPs don’t care for them much either. The thing is, not every pitcher is Strasburg. Over his last 20 innings pitched he has racked up 31 strikeouts. Even if a few runs are allowed here, the Twins still strike out out 21.1 percent of the time versus RHPs, opening the door for huge DFS upside.

AdamPlutko vs. Los Angeles Angels

$7,700 FD / $8,800 DK

The Angels are a very unpredictable to team to attack in DFS, and this 9/11 MLB DFS slate is no different. They are 13th in MLB versus RHPs in wOBA, and 23rd in strikeouts. When you combine these factors, they all spell stay away. Regardless, in Plutko’s last start facing the Angels he went 5 1/3 innings allowing one earned run while sending four batters to the bench in dismay. I expect similar numbers here again tonight.

ReynaldoLopez vs. Kansas City Royals

$8,600 FD / $9,800 DK

Reynaldo Lopez may not be the greatest thing since the grilled cheese sandwich, but he does offer some upside on this 9/11 MLB DFS slate. Although he has had his ups and downs versus the Royals this season, the last time he faced them he had eight strikeouts over six innings, allowing one earned run. In his last start he pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run with 11 strikeouts versus Cleveland.

On theAttack

There are the obvious stacks pretty much any time there is a Coors Field game, and this 9/11 MLB DFS slate is no different. It is going to be rather difficult to bat load tonight unless you completely fade decent pitching.

ZachEflin vs. Atlanta Braves

With everyone trying to fit Cardinals, Rockies, and Dodgers in their lineups on this 9/11 MLB DFS slate, let’s look elsewhere. Eflin has a 19.06 ERA over 5 2/3 innings vs. Atlanta this year. Despite pitching well in his recent starts I see a major blow up here tonight.

Notable Bats

Freddie Freeman is a top play most nights and tonightis no different. He is posting a .424 wOBA versus RHPs this season with a wRC+of 162.

Josh Donaldson is 6-for-9 with a home run and six RBIversus Eflin. He also is sporting a .393 wOBA versus RHPs on the season.

Matt Joyce is batting .385 with two home runs over the last seven days and carries a .374 wOBA versus RHPs.

Ryan Weber vs. Toronto Blue Jays

In the words of my stepdaughter Hailee, “oof”. Even though the Blue Jays are 26th in MLB versus RHPs, they still offer a bevy of runs on any given night. With Weber returning from Triple-A tonight, I am sprinkling in Jays bats on this 9/11 MLB DFS slate. Keep in mind, this is more of a boom-or-bust GPP play.

Notable Bats

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has the lowest strikeoutpercentage of any daily starter by far at 17.4 percent versus RHP. He also hasa .365 wOBA against as well.

Rowdy Tellez homered in his only AB versus Shawarynthis season, and I see another huge night tonight batting in the five spot.

Randall Grichuk fares better versus LHPs, but he does offer HR upside facing scrub pitchers at a discount.

Monkey Knife Fight Prop Pick

The Indians are 19th in MLB in strikeout versus RHPs, I am going under with Peters, failing to reach this number in three of his last four starts.

The last time Plutko faced the Angels he had four strikeouts. I see this easily happening again. Over all the way.
