This is a day where paying up for pitcher is a necessity for me. The low priced options in 8/5 MLB DFS Pitching are ugly and the mid tier guys aren’t much better. I see two studs at the top I LOVE and I dug out one low option, as well as one mid-ranger in case we’re feeling froggy.

8/5 MLB DFS Pitching Stud: Lucas Giolito @ Detroit Tigers

DraftKings – $11,000, FanDuel- $9,800

Giolito returned to form last time out against the New York Mets, going seven innings and striking out nine batters. This turn he gets the putrid Detroit Tigers, who traded away their best hitter at the deadline. On the road this season is where Giolito shines even more. He holds a 2.76 ERA and an 11.02 K/9. There is not one player on the Tigers that worries me so I will lock in Giolito in all formats in 8/5 MLB DFS Pitching.

8/5 MLB DFS Pitching Mid_Ranger: Jeff Samardzija vs Washington Nationals

DraftKings – $8,700, FanDuel – $8,600

I never once thought I would say his name this season, but here we are. The Shark has been pretty solid fantasy wise this season and we get a huge park boost playing in San Francisco. At home he holds a 3.67 ERA and a 8.17 K/9. This will be one of my GPP mid-tier guys here as he has eclipsed or been near 25 points 5 times this season.

8/5 MLB DFS Pitching Stud 2: Charlie Morton vs Toronto Blue Jays

DraftKings – $10,700, FanDuel – $10,100

The Blue Jays are exciting to watch, they have a ton of young talent coming up and they are explosive. That being said, they are still young and inexperienced. Charlie Morton is a vet that knows how to slice and dice the opposing batters. This season at home Morton owns a 2.77 ERA and a staggering 12.55 K/9. The Blue Jays are young and it shows. They strike out a ton and I don’t see why Morton can’t be the highest scoring pitcher.

8/5 MLB DFS Pitching Value Play: Spencer Turnbull vs Chicago White Sox

DraftKings – $7,000, FanDuel – $6,600

Fresh off the IL we get Turnbull heading to Chicago to play the White Sox. Over the weekend we saw the White Sox strike out 38 times. Turnbull has the ability to rack up the strikeouts and that’s what I expect here. Against right handed bats he has a 9.48 K/9 and a 52.3% ground ball rate. I expect a ton of strikeouts and ground balls to go with the numbers. I love Turnbull as a punt for cash and a cheap GPP option with upside.

With a doubleheader between the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees, there were 13 games on the Thursday July 18 MLB DFS slate. All points and price values are based off DraftKings.

MLB DFS Winners

Merrill Kelly ($6,000)

Kelly had a great outing against the Milwaukee Brewers last night. He tossed seven innings of one run ball on three hits and struck out six Brewers. He has been throwing well lately and should be in your lineup for his next start.

Kelly’s MLB DFS Outlook

In his past seven games, Kelly is 1-3 with a 3.16 ERA and a WHIP of 0.98. He has been throwing well but hasn’t gotten much run support. This was a Top-Five performance of the season for Kelly. His next MLB DFS start is slated for Tuesday at home against the Orioles. Make sure to find space for Kelly in your lineup for that matchup.

Enrique Hernandez ($3,600)

Hernandez went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored against the Philadelphia Phillies. All four hits were singles, but he was placing the ball all over the field. He upped his average to .235 for the season. Put Hernandez in the MLB DFS lineup for today’s matchup.

Hernandez’s MLB DFS Outlook

Hernandez is on fire lately at the plate, with a .571 OBP in the last seven games. He has been hitting for a good amount of power as well. The Dodgers face the Miami Marlins in L.A. Rookie Zac Gallen hasn’t been great in his outings thus far. Look for Hernandez to have a couple of hits.

MLB DFS Losers

Charlie Morton ($10,200)

Charlie Morton did not pitch like his normal self in the second half of the doubleheader against the New York Yankees. He went 5.2 innings and allowed five runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts while picking up his third loss of the season. The fourth inning was a struggle for Morton as he balked with the bases loaded and gave up a two run single right after that.

Morton’s Outlook

Charlie Morton has been struggling as of late after beginning the season on fire. In his last seven games, he is 3-3 with a 3.56 ERA. His hasn’t had many bad outings, but picked up all three losses this season in that span. The four walks given up was his most since May 19, also at Yankee Stadium. His next start is Tuesday night against the Boston Red Sox. Fade him in MLB DFS there.

J.D. Martinez ($4,500)

J.D. Martinez went hitless in his four a-bats against the Toronto Blue Jays last night. He ended up leaving three runners on base and he has not been making solid contact as of late. His batting average dipped to .286.

Martinez’s Outlook

Martinez has been ice cold at the plate recently as he is posting a .100 batting average in the past week of games. He is in prime position to bounce back in MLB DFS as the Red Sox travel to Baltimore to face the lowly Orioles. The Orioles do not have a solid pitching staff, especially after dealing Andrew Cashner. Look for Martinez to begin breaking out of his slump.

Injury Update

Corey Kluber worked his first bullpen session with 20 fastballs. This was the first time Kluber has pitched since fracturing his forearm on May 1.

Yadier Molina is recovering from a thumb tendon strain but will have to wait another three weeks before being re-evaluated.

Johnathan Lucroy had the procedure to fix his broken nose and does not have a timetable for a return. The original prognosis was three weeks after the surgery.

There was a 15 game DFS slate on Tuesday July 2nd but weather only allowed 14 games to be played. Although no one put up a performance like Josh Bell’s from Monday, there were still some good outings. Salaries and points are based on DraftKings.

DFS Winners

Rafael Devers ($4,900)

The Red Sox visited the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday and got the win, 10-6. Devers had a big DFS outing, going 4-for-5 with two home runs. He finished with six RBI and two runs scored and scored 42 fantasy points. Devers has played really well all year and has a batting average of .329 to go with an OPS of .926. He has now hit 14 home runs and has 56 RBI. Devers has 15 hits over his last six games played. The Red Sox have two more games on the road against the Blue Jays.

Devers’ Outlook

The Toronto Blue Jays have been bad this year from a pitching standpoint. They are tied for 23rd in the league with a team ERA of 4.89. Toronto had the worst team ERA in the month of June at 5.81. TOR also allowed the highest opposing batting average in June at .289. They allow a .262 batting average to lefties. All this adds up to a plus DFS matchup for Devers and the rest of the Red Sox. Roster Devers with confidence for the remainder of the series.

Charlie Morton ($10,600)

The Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles at home on Tuesday 6-3. Morton pitched seven great innings and only gave up one earned on four four hits. He was able to strike out 12 while walking only one and giving up one solo homer. He scored 38.75 DFS points and has an ERA of 2.36 to go with a great WHIP of 1.03. His K/9 is very high at 11.1. This was a good bounce-back after taking the loss in his last outing against the Twins.

Morton’s DFS Outlook

Morton’s next projected start will come after the All Star break. He has had a great first half of the season and has shown no signs of slowing down. He has been a great DFS pitcher while racking up the strikeouts. Morton had given up only 12 earned runs in his last eight starts and will carry great momentum into the second half of the season. He should be one of the top options the rest of the way.

Yuli Gurriel ($4,100)

Gurriel and the Astros got the win in a high scoring game at Coors Field against the Rockies. They won 9-8 and Gurriel was a big reason why. He went 3-for-5 with two home runs and a double. He finished with four RBI and two runs scored. Gurriel has had a pretty good first half of the year and has a batting average of .272 to go with his OPS of .756. Gurriel has hit 10 home runs and has 41 RBI.

Gurriel’s Outlook

The Astros have one more game at Coors Field before heading home to face the Angels. Gurriel and the rest of the Astros’ offense should be in high DFS demand for the game on Wednesday. Peter Lambert has an ERA of 6.57 and a WHIP of 1.46. He has started five games and has given up seven home runs. The entire Astros’ offense will be highly owned.

Losers

Jake Odorizzi ($9,900)

The Minnesota Twins faced the Oakland Athletics Tuesday and Odorizzi was roughed up. He was only able to get through three innings and gave up five earned runs. Odorizzi allowed four hits and walked three while giving up two home runs. He was able to strike out two. Odorizzi has been a big part of the Twins’ success this year and has an ERA of 2.73 to go with his WHIP of 1.07. His K/9 is in good shape at 9.88.

Odorizzi’s Outlook

Odorizzi has one more projected start before the All-Star break and it comes on July 7th against the Texas Rangers. Texas has had one of the better offense all year and has not slowed down. They have the seventh most runs scored this year and average nearly 5.5 per game. The Twins rank number two in the league in strikeouts and K nearly 10 times per game. This should be a big upside DFS spot for Odorizzi.

Freddie Freeman ($5,100)

Freeman and the Atlanta Braves could not get anything going on Tuesday and lost 2-0. Freeman went 0-for-4 and struck out once. The Braves were only able to get four hits on Tuesday. This is a rare down DFS game for Freeman and he has a batting average of .309 to go with an OPS of .979. He has hit 22 home runs and has 65 RBI. FF is coming off a huge June in which he hit .322 with an OPS of 1.066. Freeman hit nine home runs and had 33 RBI in June as well.

Freeman’s Outlook

The Braves have two more home games against the Phillies. The Phillies pitching has been just below average this year and they have a team ERA of 4.61. They have been worse than that lately, with a team ERA of 5.63 in the month of June, 28th in the league. Freeman should bounce back against the Phillies and put up good numbers as a great MLB DFS option.

Injury Report

Tommy La Stella left Tuesday’s game after fouling a ball off his knee. He had to be helped off the field which shows this is something to watch moving forward.

Your DFS Pitching Picks for July 2

Patrick Corbin vs. Miami Marlins

DraftKings $11,100, FanDuel $10,600

At home this season Patrick Corbin has been sensational. He holds a 2.17 ERA and a 9.60 K/9. This is the same story with the sorry Marlins that we should all want to attack daily in DFS. Corbin should be major chalk and I still love him in DFS tournaments even with the chalk.

Charlie Morton vs. Baltimore Orioles

DraftKings $10,600, FanDuel $10,800

Morton has had a solid first half of the season. I always like taking pitchers in Tampa Bay in DFS as I see it more pitcher-friendly. Morton has been dominating righties, holding them to a .179 BAA and he is slashing lefties to a 12.02 K/9. I’m never scared of Baltimore outside of Trey Mancini. If you don’t trust or want leverage on Corbin I would go with Morton.

Matt Boyd @ Chicago White Sox

DraftKings $10,100, FanDuel $10,000

This is my pay up high DFS tournament upside play of the day. Boyd has been a little shaky of late, but he figured it out last time he pitched. Boyd always has that very high strikeout upside that we search for in DFS tournaments, especially on the road. Boyd turns it up a notch to get strikeouts as he holds a 12.90 K/9 on the road. I love Boyd here against a White Sox team that strikes out a ton.

Matt Strahm vs. San Francisco Giants

DraftKings $6,900, FanDuel $7,600

Strahm is my favorite pay down DFS option with the opponent and the field. San Diego is a very pitcher friendly park and the Giants are a very pitcher friendly team, as they are horrible. Strahm holds a solid 9.42 K/9 against lefties, which I’m looking for, as he has to go through Belt and Panik. I’ll never be scared of this Giants offense and Strahm helps you get in Coors.

Scott Engel and Jason Mezrahi are featured in the 6/26 MLB DFS Podcast. Listen to get caught up on who they are planning to play this afternoon and tonight. They break down all the slates and they debate on whether Yu Darvish can survive a matchup with the Braves lineup.

Should You Stack Against Vargas?

Today’s DFS Podcast is full of spirited back and forth discussions. Jason goes right in for a Phillies stack against Jason Vargas, but Scott cautions that the Mets pitcher has been performing well overall recently. On the full slate, Jason is leaning heavily towards using German Marquez. The featured matchup of the night has Charlie Morton opposing Jake Odorizzi. Do you dare use Morton against the Minnesota lineup? Is the Twins starter beginning to fade and cannot be trusted?

Charlie Morton @ Oakland Athletics

DraftKings $11,300, FanDuel $10,500

As Charlie Morton continues to prove me wrong, I will still play him. So far this season on the road he holds a 1.59 ERA and a .178 BAA. A number I’m looking at in particular is the 10.72 K/9. I’m not in love with the Athletics offense by any means, but they aren’t pushovers. On a bad pitching slate, in my opinion, Morton is the clear top option.

Jake Odorizzi @ Kansas City Royals

DraftKings $10,800, FanDuel $10,000

I never would have ever thought Jake Odorizzi would be anywhere close to this price this season. He has performed very well and I’m jumping on the hype train. So far this season Odorizzi has been completely dominant against right-handed bats holding, them to a .149 BAA. On the other side, he strikes out lefties at an amazing 12.93 K/9 clip. With the lack of pitching I don’t mind paying up for both of Morton and Odorizzi IF you can fit it.

Frankie Montas vs. Tampa Bay Rays

DraftKings $10,000, FanDuel $9,300

Frankie Montas has turned into the pitcher I always thought he would be. He has had an incredible season so far and gets a tough task again the Rays, but I feel like he can fight through this. At home this season, Montas has a .189 BAA to righties along with a 8.22 K/9. I do fear Meadows and Lowe, but I think if he can get by them he will cruise. This is more of a GPP option for me.

Dylan Bundy @ Seattle Mariners

DraftKings $7,400, FanDuel $7,300

I know Bundy hasn’t been amazing this season, but his strikeout numbers on the road are there (10.98). I’m either paying down to Bundy or paying up for two studs tonight. Bundy has been able to hold his own against righties, but he struggles pretty mightily against lefties. As the Mariners are in a full sell-off mode, I’m willing to take a good pitcher who is just having a tough time against them.
