Cleveland just snapped a four-game losing streak against the Buffalo Bills and is looking to win its second game this week. The Steelers have outscored its opponents by 12 points and Cleveland has been outscored this season by 50 points. Pittsburgh has the third-highest DVOA in the NFL with the Browns checking in at number 23 according to Football Outsiders.

It’s going to be a cold night in Cleveland and Bet Labs reports that the home team on Thursday nights is 71-48 ATS since 2003. That’s a huge trend but the way the underdogs have covered this season, and especially the way road underdogs have covered, gives me pause. The road to March Madness begins tonight as the NCAA Men’s basketball season officially tips-off and there is 87 games on the sheet tonight. That will be the case nearly every day until the Conference Tournaments begin at the end of February and runs through early March.

Early Season Experience Matters

College basketball teams change personnel quickly. The Dukes and Kentucky’s of the world aren’t affected as much by this as most schools. Look for established programs with at least three returning starters or two starters and a key reserve from the season before. Nerves matter and significant returning starters of active reserves probably won’t be as nervous as someone who has never played an NCAA game. If one of those returnees is a center averaging seven or more rebounds, then all the better.

Strength Of Schedule Matters

This applies to the non-conference portion as well as the conference schedule. Getting blown out by Duke affects a teams stats and a Wofford might have a better defense than its skewed number say that it is. Kenneth Pomeroy has a great site offering free tools such as strength of schedule and I highly suggest paying attention to this.
