Some notes on what I believe to be the “optimal” roster build for NFL DFS Cash Games. I’ll include this in all the Checkdown articles moving forward. For Week Nine, please see below for my notes on roster construction:

  • There are a lot of mid-tier options at the WR position, but at first glance, I do not think you need to pay up for more than one top-tier WR (if any at all).
  • I do think you need to build around Christian McCaffrey or Dalvin Cook. Please note, they are both extremely expensive so hence the paying down at WR2/WR3/TE. I prefer Dalvin Cook, but you can’t go wrong with CMC.
  • Until further notice, I am 100% using Jarvis Landry in cash (DraftKings only).
  • Just because someone is not included in this write-up, does not mean you cannot play them in cash. These are all just my preferred plays for an optimal cash game build.

NFL DFS Cash Games Quarterbacks

  1. Russell Wilson ($7,100) – Russell Wilson at home against a pass funnel defense who is terrible in coverage. Keep it simple if you can afford him. He’s easily my favorite cash play on the board.
  2. Aaron Rodgers ($6,900) – It’s Aaron Rodgers and he’s fire lately. I do think this is more of a run attack for the Packers against this banged up Chargers’ defense, but Rodgers is always in play.
  3. Matthew Stafford ($6,800) – Stafford came up huge for us in Week Eight and should be able to hit value for us again in Week Nine. I don’t think he’ll have a blowup game like he did last Sunday at home, but this matchup in Oakland is a good one. I have him projected for 305 passing yards and that is crucial on DraftKings where there is a 300+ yard passing bonus.
  4. Derek Carr ($5,500) – Great price and a great spot at home against the Lions. I like both Quarterbacks in this high-total (opened at at 51.5) matchup.
  5. Matt Moore ($4,800) – This is more so a punt type of play. I trust the Chiefs’ offense to continue to move the ball like they have all season long regardless of who’s under center. Moore clearly doesn’t have the ceiling of Mahomes (or the floor), but he’s in play for cash at this price with a healthy Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Sammy Watkins.

NFL DFS Cash Games Running Backs

  1. Christian McCaffrey ($10,000) – Wow, what a price. He’s Christian McCaffrey and he’ll probably still hit value.
  2. Dalvin Cook ($9,500) – I strongly suggest playing one of these premium running backs. Kansas City is absolutely awful at defending running backs (they’ve given up the most DraftKings points to opposing RBs over the past month). Cook will feast yet again.
  3. Le’Veon Bell ($7,700) – Welcome to Le’Veon Bell chalk week folks. Assuming ownership is through the roof, you cannot fade Bell in cash. He’s in a prime spot here against Miami.
  4. Aaron Jones ($7,000) – We loved David Montgomery last week due to this banged up Chargers’ defense. We love Aaron Jones this week.
  5. Josh Jacobs ($6,500) – Jacobs is starting to become one of those gamescript proof running backs. I love what I see from him on the field and think he is 100% worth his price this week in DFS. The days of getting Josh Jacobs under $6,000 are gone. The Lions’ run defense has been awful lately and rather banged up.
  6. Jordan Howard ($5,100) – The Bears have been getting pounded by opposing running backs over the past three games (giving up over 37 DraftKings points per game). Jordan Howard has a little bit of revenge narrative here and I think he’s a lock for 15+ touches assuming this game stays close.
  7. Phil Lindsay ($5,300) & Royce Freeman ($4,900) – Hate that they split the snaps, but at this price and in this matchup against Cleveland (third most fantasy points per game allowed to opposing running backs in the last month) I’m fine with using one of these Broncos’ backs at home.
  8. Jaylen Samuels ($4,000) – If James Conner is out due to his injury from Monday night, Samuels becomes our top value play at the RB position.

Wide Receivers

  1. Kenny Golladay ($7,700) – Golladay’s price shot up this week after a monster Week Eight performance. This Raiders’ secondary is extremely beatable and Golladay should have his way with them. If you can’t afford him, use Amendola.
  2. Tyler Lockett ($7,500) – Smash matchup with a solid floor every week. If you can afford him, Lockett makes perfect sense in cash.
  3. Tyreek Hill ($7,400) – Hill obviously is upgraded if Mahomes comes back this week. I’ll update this spot when we hear more on Mahomes.
  4. Chris Godwin ($7,300) – After disappointing a bit last week (thankfully we played Mike Evans instead), Godwin enters Week Nine in a wonderful spot against the Seahawks and their slot cornerback Jamar Taylor. I have Godwin projected for at least eight catches and 105 yards.
  5. Allen Robinson ($6,800) – Excellent matchup against the Eagles’ poor excuse of a secondary. The price is climbing on Robinson, but he’s still cash viable.
  6. JuJu Smith-Schuster ($6,300) – JuJu Smith-Schuster’s price is so low and is in a prime matchup against a lowly Colts’ secondary. I loved what I saw out of Smith-Schuster on Monday Night so look for him to follow that up with another solid outing on Sunday.
  7. D.J. Moore ($4,800) – He isn’t Mike Evans, but this is the exact same matchup I exploited last week. Moore’s targets are there and he will produce this week as the Titans’ put their focus on slowing down McCaffrey.
  8. Danny Amendola ($4,700) – I’ve never been an Amendola guy, but the snap share has been there the past two weeks and he comes into this week in a prime matchup against Lamarcus Joyner from the Raiders. I’m expecting the Lions to have a pass-heavy focus again this week, so Amendola makes perfect sense.
  9. Jarvis Landry ($4,500) – My cash game lock of the week! When the Broncos play a true number one wide receiver, Chris Harris (in my opinion, one of the best cornerbacks in football) plays shadow coverage. So, I’m willing to bet Chris Harris is going to be all over Odell Beckham for 65% or more of those snaps which should free up a lot of space for Jarvis Landry.

If you’re bored, go look at the box scores for the Denver Broncos’ games in Week Two, Week Three, and last week. Chris Harris was assigned shadow coverage in those three games and those wide receivers (Allen Robinson, Davante Adams, and T.Y. Hilton) all had brutal games. Harris is legit, so hopefully Odell Beckham wears one of those pretty watches – that’s the only thing that will help him look good this week.

If you’re not bored, just take my word for it and use Landry in DraftKings cash games and enjoy. At this price, we don’t need much.
  10. Diontae Johnson ($4,500) – I love the rapport Rudolph and Johnson have been building thus far. I’ll most likely use ONE of either Smith-Schuster or Johnson in cash. I still like him, but unless you need two salary relief wide receivers, just play Landry.
  11. DeVante Parker ($4,400) – Fitzpatrick loves chucking the ball to DeVante Parker. I have always been a big believer in Parker and this may finally be the season where he starts to perform consistently. Neither Trumaine Johnson or Darryl Roberts for the Jets can contain Parker. I like his matchup here.

Tight Ends

  1. Darren Waller ($6,300) – He’s expensive, but enters this week in a much better matchup against the Lions who traded away their best TE coverage man, Quandre Diggs. Tracy Walker is also questionable in this game, so Waller should be able to have his way with the Lions’ pass defenders.
  2. Zach Ertz ($4,700) – I don’t like picking on Ha-Ha Clinton Dix, but I trust the Eagles and Zach Ertz to right the ship. Ertz has been a major disappoint in the fantasy world this year but at this price, you don’t need him to have a big game… just a serviceable one.
  3. Cameron Brate ($3,100) – Excellent salary relief for one of Winston’s favorite targets in the passing game. Seattle has been giving up over 16 DraftKings points to opposing tight ends and I really like this game’s chances at shooting out. Brate will be active in this passing attack (assuming OJ Howard is out).
  4. Jack Doyle ($3,000) – Doyle got a big upgrade in my model after removing T.Y. Hilton from the player pool (he’s out with injury). This is an excellent matchup against the Steelers who have been bleeding points to opposing tight ends all season. I prefer him in cash over Brate.

Defense/Special Teams

  1. Buffalo Bills ($3,800)
  2. Carolina Panthers ($2,800)
  3. Washington Redskins ($1,800) – If you need the salary elsewhere, the Redskins are fine here.
