MLB DFS Hitter Stacks (Aug. 12)

Welcome to the Friday edition of the Stack City, where I’ll be going through the top MLB DFS Stacks on DraftKings and Fanduel.

It’s Friday and that means we have a massive 13-game slate of MLB DFS.  We have some great pitchers to attack and the ultimate narrative tonight.

Always make sure to read Adam’s Starting Rotation when setting your lineup.  It’s hands down the best pitching article in the MLB DFS business.

Let’s dig in and see if we can find some stacks to use today!

MLB DFS Stacks – Main

San Diego Padres vs. Cory Abbott

After completely dominating my New York Mets in his first start of the year, things could not have gone any differently for the young Cory Abbott vs. the Phillies.  He surrendered 7 ER in just 3 and two-thirds of an inning.  With a matchup against the high-powered San Diego Padres, I expect something of a repeat performance tonight.  He’s going to have his hands full tonight as this is a lineup with few holes.

To make matters even tougher for him, he’ll be facing the ultimate narrative.  A recently traded top 3 player league facing off against his former team.  With Abbott, we’re going to want to prioritize getting lefty bats into this stack.  On the year, lefties have a massive .700 slugging % vs. him and a .455 wOBA.  4 of the 5 homers he’s given up have been to lefties.

Core:  I’m 100% playing the narrative here.  My core with the Padres tonight will be Juan Soto and Josh Bell.  Soto is coming into this one hot, with hits in 8 of his last 9 games.  The former Nats star will probably have all the emotions tonight.  After spending the first 4.5 seasons with the Nats, he was shipped to San Diego for a slew of prospects.  This will be his first game back and he’s my home run call of the day.  The narrative will remain undefeated in this one.

Bell also makes for a solid play tonight.  The switch-hitter has been far better as a lefty as he has a .311 average vs. righties this season and his OPS just a hair under .900.  Both of these guys will be successful in their homecoming tonight.

Secondary Pieces:  After the narrative, I’m going to look to add guys like Jurickson ProfarJake Cronenworth, and Manny Machado.  Over the last month, Cronenworth has had substantial numbers vs. righties.  He has a .437 wOBA and a .263 ISO.  He’s no longer leading off, but he’ll still be hitting in the middle of this order and should have plenty of chances to knock in some runs.

Profar is also a solid bat vs. righties.  Over the last month, Profar has a .346 wOBA vs. righties and a .233 ISO.  He’s coming into this one a little cold thanks to a low BABIP, but at $4.3k and leading off, he’s in a good spot and affordable.

Value: Trent Grisham is the only Padres player priced under $3k tonight.  With having the platoon advantage tonight, he’ll be in a good spot.  He’s flashed some power vs. righties over the past month with a .211 ISO.  Grisham will be a cheap way to get into this Padres stack.

Houston Astros vs. Adam Oller

Oh boy are the Astros in a solid spot tonight.  They’ll get to take on Adam Oller and his 6.10 ERA over the last month.  The Athletics rookie has really struggled in his first season in the bigs, posting a 7.63 ERA and a 6.30 xFIP.  He’s coming into this one having allowed 4 runs in 3 consecutive games.  Oller is giving up what we really like to see with our MLB DFS stacks.  He gives up a ton of hard contact and a ton of flyballs.

Over his last 20 innings of work, he’s allowed 6 homers and 11 barrels.  Giving up 11 barrels in just 20 innings of work is an incredible pace.  He’s just not fooling anyone at the plate and hitters are teeing off on him.  I’m not going to be overly concerned with splits here.  Both sides of the plate have slugging %’s over .580 against him and wOBA’s over .400.  He’s bad against just about everyone.

Core:  I’m starting my Houston stack with the 2 guys that are hitting the ball the best for them right now, and that is Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman.   Tucker is coming into this one with a modest 4-game hitting streak.  He’s been extremely solid vs. righties all year long and his last 30 days have been no different.  Over the last 30 days, he has a .237 ISO vs. them with a .355 wOBA.  Bregman is also coming into this one hot, with hits in 8 of his last 9 games. He had a solid series against Texas, with 5 hits in 9 AB.  In a soft matchup tonight vs. Oller, he’ll look to keep the good times rolling.

Secondary: My secondary pieces in this stack are going to be Jose Altuve and Yordan Alverez.  Both guys are phenomenal hitters, but both guys are also extremely expensive and not quite in the best form.  If I can fit them in, I will, but I won’t force either one into my lineups.

Value:  Houston should have a couple of nice value pieces available in this stack.  Both Chas McCormick and Jake Meyers are priced under $3k.  McCormick is at $2.6k and Meyers is min-priced at just $2k tonight.  They are an extremely cheap way to get access to a stack that is expected to score close to 6 runs tonight.

Chicago White Sox vs. Daniel Norris

After pitching out of the bullpen for the Cubs this season, Daniel Norris returns to his roots and will be starting for the Detroit Tigers tonight.  Norris spent the majority of his career with the Tigers and he’s someone we’ve always looked to stack against. Tonight will be no different.  On the year, Norris has a pretty high 6.90 ERA.

While the xFIP of 3.79 indicates he’s due for some positive regression, I just don’t see it happening tonight against a solid, albeit disappointing White Sox lineup.  With Norris, we want to attack him with righties and the White Sox will more than likely throw out a lineup with 8-9 righties in it tonight.  Righties have a .583 slugging % vs. Norris this season along with a 404 wOBA.

Core:  The core to my White Sox stack tonight will be Luis RobertAndrew Vaughn, and Jose Abreu.  These are the 3 regulars that have been the most dominant against lefties this season.  We’ll start with Robert.  He’s been absolutely lights out vs. lefties this season, hitting .400 and having a slugging % of .585.  He’ll be hitting out of the leadoff spot tonight and although he’s priced high at $5.1k, he should return value.

Next up will be Jose Abreu.  Abreu has a long history of abusing southpaws and this season has been no different.  He has an OPS of .884 against them this season, thanks to a solid .513 slugging %.  Vaughn has also been solid this season against lefties, with .860 OPS.  He’s also very reasonably priced tonight at just $4.2k.

Secondary Pieces:  Other pieces I like in this stack tonight will be Eloy JimenezYasmani Grandal, and Yoan Moncada.  While I typically like to use Jimenez more against righties, he’s coming into this matchup as one of the White Sox’s better hitters over the last week.  And we also can’t expect Norris to last too long in this one as it’s his first start of the season.  Although he hasn’t quite shown the power this season vs. lefties, Grandal has been an on-base machine vs. them.  He has a .441 OBP vs. lefties this season and will make a nice complement to my core, especially at just $3.5k.

MLB DFS Summary

Other stacks I like tonight will be the Cardinals vs. Eric Lauer, Rockies vs. Zach Davies, and the Giants vs. Bryse Wilson.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green.
