MLB DFS Winners and Losers: Dietrich, Giolito and More

There was a 15 game slate on Tuesday May 28th. I will go into detail on some players who performed really well and some who underachieved. Points and salaries are based on DraftKings.

Winners

Derek Dietrich ($4,400)

Dietrich and the Reds beat the Pirates at home 11-6 on Tuesday. Dietrich went 3-for-4 and hit three home runs. This went along with six RBI and three runs scored. He put up 48 fantasy points. Dietrich has had a good season this year with really impressive power numbers. He has a batting average of .254 to go with his OPS of 1.085. He has 17 home runs and 35 RBI. Dietrich has hit nine home runs in just 60 at bats in the month of May.

Dietrich’s Outlook

The Reds host the Pirates for one more game before the Nationals visit Cincinnati. Dietrich will be a popular play on Wednesday after his monster day but I will be looking at his upcoming matchup with the Nationals. The Nationals pitching staff has struggled so far this year and they have a team ERA of 4.89. They also allow an opposing batting average of .255. Both of these stats rank in the 20’s in the league. I will be looking to roster Dietrich in this series and moving forward.

Lucas Giolito ($9,900)

Giolito and the Chicago White Sox played at home against the Royals on Tuesday. Giolito was highlighted in our pitching writeup for Tuesday and came through in a big way. He pitched eight full innings and got the win. Giolito gave up three earned runs on three hits and one walk. He was able to get 10 strikeouts against the Royals lineup. Giolito was the top scoring pitcher on Tuesday’s slate and scored 33 fantasy points. He improved to 7-1 on the year. Giolito has had a great season and has an ERA of 2.85 and a WHIP of 0.98. His K/9 is currently at 10.35. He has been especially good lately and this is his fifth straight game with a win.

Giolito’s Outlook

Giolito’s next projected start will come against the Cleveland Indians at home. Cleveland’s offense has been horrible this year and they average only 3.83 runs per game. They have a team batting average of .222. Both stats rank in the Bottom Five in the league. They have been equally as bad in the month of May and have averaged 3.76 runs this month. This should be a great spot to ride Giolito’s hot hand, as the Indians also strike out at a decent rate to go with their run scoring struggles. Roster him with confidence moving forward even at his high price tag.

Alex Bregman ($4,800)

Houston took down the Chicago Cubs on the road 9-6 and Bregman led the way for the Astros. Bregman went 2-for-4 with two home runs and a walk. He scored three runs and had three RBI. He scored 34 fantasy points for anyone who rostered him Tuesday. Bregman has been great this year again and has a batting average of .271 and an OPS of .968. He has hit 17 home runs and has 38 RBI. He has also taken 39 walks while striking out only 36 times.

Bregman’s Outlook

Bregman and the Astros have one more game against the Cubs before heading to Oakland for a three game stand on the road. Kyle Hendricks will pitch for the Cubs Wednesday and he has struggled in his last couple of outings. He has given up 11 runs over 11.2 innings in his last two starts. I will try and fit Bregman in my lineups on Wednesday. Looking forward to the series with the Athletics, I like his chances to continue his success. Oakland has had decent success pitching this year and has a team ERA of 4.03 and an opposing batting average of .238. Even with the early success for the A’s pitching staff, I like Bregman’s upside in this series.

Losers

Jon Lester ($7,500)

Lester faced off against the Astros on Tuesday and took the loss as the Cubs fell 9-6. Lester gave up seven earned runs on eight hits and three walks. He also gave up a home run and was able to get through 5.2 innings. He also was only able to get three strikeouts. Lester had -2.45 fantasy points. His record dropped to 3-4 after Tuesday’s loss. His ERA is currently at 3.59 and his WHIP is at 1.39. He started the season out pretty well but has dropped off significantly lately. He has given up 42 hits in just his last five starts.

Lester’s Outlook

Lester’s next projected start will come against the Angels at home on June 3rd. The Angels’ offense has been average this year. They score 4.74 runs per game and have a team batting average of .254. They do avoid the strikeout really well this year and average only 6.23 strikeouts per game. This is by far the lowest rate in the league. With Lester’s recent struggles and the Angels’ strikeout numbers, I will be fading him in this one. His ceiling is low and so is his floor.

Willson Contreras ($5,100)

Contreras faced Corbin Martin and the Astros Tuesday. Contreras went 0-for-5 and struck out three times. He has had a really good start to the year and has a batting average of .302 and a WHIP of .984. Contreras has hit 12 home runs and has 32 RBI. He has struck out 49 times in 49 games and has only walked 22 times. Contreras has struggled some in his last week and is 5-for-20 with one home run over that time span.

Contreras’ Outlook

Contreras and the Cubs have one more game against the Astros before heading to St Louis for a three game series with the Cardinals. The Cubs will face Wade Miley, who has pitched well this season. Miley has an ERA of 3.32 and is 5-2. He then faces the Cardinals, who have a team ERA of 4.39 and allow an opposing batting average of .241, both near the league average. Contreras’ numbers this year are much better than his career numbers. I expect some regression moving forward and with Contreras’ steep salary, I will be fading him until that salary dips back down.

Injury Report

Carlos Correa was not in the lineup Tuesday because of sore ribs. He saw a doctor for further tests.

Michael Pineda was placed on the 10-day IL with knee tendinitis.
