It’s Sunday Funday at The Sweet Spot. I got to see the Phillies lose to the Mets firsthand yesterday so I’m going to take that frustration out today with some DFS winners. Hopefully there’s an Angels like stack out there again because 25 runs was crazy last night in Colorado. So let’s get at it today and layout some winners!
This article will focus on Pitchers, from aces to value, and Hitters, from team stacks to studs to value plays. Prop bets for today will be provided in the Gophers and Gas article.
There are many tools available, but I hope you’re using the Win Daily Projection Model as that has been very helpful in rostering key players each night.
For DFS, the featured card today begins at 1:35 pm with 10 games on the slate. All DFS plays below will come from those 10 games and any later games will be captured in Discord.
PITCHERS – DRAFTKINGS
CLASSIC SLATE – 1:35 PM Start
GERRIT COLE ($10,700 DK)
The Cole train keeps rolling as the Yankees SP racked up his 8th win in his last outing and improving his record to 8-1. There was a little controversy in the game with certain batters trying to mess with Cole’s timing but that made him enraged and pitch even better.
Cole is in my player pool today because he’s pitched well against Texas this year and he’s at home. In New York he’s 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA. And the Yankees shut out the Rangers yesterday behind Severino so they have a good plan on how to attack this formidable offense which should add to the NYY starters value.
ZACK WHEELER ($9500 DK)
Wheeler has found his form over the past month. In face he has 5 quality starts in his last 6 outings. And today he gets to face his former team in the New York Mets. That hasn’t always been a good thing as he went 0-3 with a 4.91 ERA in 2022. But prior to that he was 4-1 with a sub 3.00 ERA against the Mets.
And I’m banking on the pre-2022 Wheeler to return against the Mets today. First his advanced metrics have him with a FIP almost 1 full run below his ERA showing us this recent positive regression is here to stay. And secondly, the Mets just don’t have a good mix at the plate. In the last 10 games they are 20th in batting average and have the 10th highest K rate. I like Wheeler to keep the Mets in a rut and put up a big game today.
TYLER GLASNOW ($8900 DK)
Glasnow has just one quality start in his first 5 outings in 2023. He’s been somewhat wild as 4.62 BB/9 is almost double his career numbers. And he’s allowed 5 home runs in just 25.1 innings of work (he allowed only 10 in his last full season back in 2021). So I believe that is just him working out the kinks as he’s had almost 1.5 full seasons off with multiple injuries. I am banking that he gets back on the right foot today against KC who carries the 7th highest K rate and 28th lowest BB rate in the MLB.
EURY PEREZ ($8500 DK)
The Marlins just know how to draft pitchers. And Eury Perez is another example of that as he has burst on the MLB scene in a hurry. In his first 8 starts in the MLB he has a 4-1 record and 1.54 ERA. He’s allowed just 1 ER in his last 5 starts which is over a span of 27 innings. In his last start, he set a career high of 9 K’s versus Toronto.
While he continues to climb, his opponent the Pittsburgh Pirates are doing the opposite. The Bucs are just 1-11 in their last 12 games and have lost 2 out of 3 to Miami in this current 4 game series. They are batting just 0.177 in that span which is last in baseball. This is a great spot for the Miami phenom to continue his impressive MLB debut as the Pirates are leaking badly and the boat is going down quickly as their feel good story has now turned into a typical Pittsburgh baseball season.
KOOL-AIDE MAN (SWEET SPOT VALUE PITCHER UNDER $7K)
KYLE BRADISH ($6100 DK)
The O’s starting pitcher has been solid this year as he is posting a 3.88 ERA and has 5 quality starts to his name. He also has 60 K’s in 65 innings which is good for pitchers in this range. And his opponent, the Seattle Mariners, are hitting just 0.201 over the past 10 days which is good for 28th in baseball. Add in the fact that Bradish is much better at home (3.14 ERA vs 4.46 ERA on the road) and we have a good spot to work with today in Baltimore.
BONUS PICKS
I do like AARON CIVALE ($7700 DK) today against the Brewers. In 5 of his 6 starts, Civale has allowed 2 ER’s or less. The Brewers come in hitting just 0.199 over the past 10 games which is 29th in baseball.
HITTERS – DRAFTKINGS
CLASSIC SLATE – 1:35 PM
SWEET SPOT STACK ATTACK: The stacks I like today in baseball are the Braves (vs Stoudt), the Phillies (vs. Carrasco), the Rays (vs. Lynch) and the Blue Jays (vs. Medina). The Yankees are an interesting stack too as they have good career numbers against Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi.
CORE BATTERS
NICK CASTELLANOS ($4200 DK)
The Phillies OF is deserving of an All Star spot based on his consistent and stellar play this season. Castellanos is hitting 0.317 which is good for 4th in the MLB and 3rd in the NL. He had another multi-hit day yesterday and has 10 career hits off Mets starter Carlos Carrasco.
For stacking, look at TREA TURNER, BRYCE HARPER, BRYSON STOTT AND ALEC BOHM. The weather is hot in Philly so the ball should be flying out of the Bank today.
RONALD ACUNA JR ($6500 DK)
The Braves offense has feasted on everyone of late as they batting a sizzling 0.311 in the month of June. They have scored 17 runs in the first two games of their series and get a minor leaguer today in Levi Stoudt. So if we’re liking Atlanta we must start with Acuna who is 2nd in the league in batting with a 0.328 batting average.
For stacking, I also like MARCELL OZUNA, MATT OLSON, OZZIE ALBIES and AUSTIN RILEY.
SLAP HITTER (SWEET SPOT VALUE BATTER) – LESS THAN $3K
KEVIN KEIRMAIER ($2700 DK)
If we pay up for Phillies/Braves bats then we’ll look to use the bottom of Toronto’s lineup where there are several cheap bats such as Keirmaier, Espinal and Biggio. The Jays are always in play for a quality DFS baseball stack but even more so against a soft pitching A’s rotation.
