Happy 4th of July everyone and welcome to another holiday edition of The Sweet Spot. Well the weather let us down for us glizzy eating fans (though it looks like they’ll still do the contest this afternoon). But the early Slate is off to a great start with a Miami stack popping off against Wainwright. So for those playing tonight too, I’ve added the below as a bonus. And as always, Post those winners!
This article will focus on Pitchers, from aces to value, and Hitters, from team stacks to studs to value plays. Prop bets for today will be provided in the Gophers and Gas article.
There are many tools available, but I hope you’re using the Win Daily Projection Model as that has been very helpful in rostering key players each night.
For DFS, we look at the night card today which begins at 6:45 pm with 5 games on the slate. All DFS plays below will come from those 5 games and any later games will be captured in Discord.
PITCHERS – DRAFTKINGS
CLASSIC SLATE – 6:40 PM Start
SHOHEI OHTANI ($11,500 DK)
On a short slate, the difference between top and bottom is much wider as there is less potential for someone to surprise. So let’s not overthink this one and go with the best player in baseball. After all, Ohtani has 22 Ks and juar 2 ERs in his last two starts. He’s also working with one extra day of rest as he hasn’t pitched since last Tuesday.
CHRIS BASSITT ($8500 DK)
The Blue Jays SP can give you the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. The difference between his best and worst game is roughly 48 DK points. So you almost walk blindfolded into one of his starts. But again, on a short slate I’m willing to gamble on potential as there is some margin for error. And Bassitt gives us just that especially coming off a game where he pitched 6 shutout innings and struck out 12 SF Giants batters. Plus it’s the White Sox who have been in the top 10 in K rate all season and are boasting a 25% clip in the past week.
JOE MUSGROVE ($8000 DK)
We’re doubling down on the LAA vs SD tonight as we are adding Joe Musgrove alongside Shohei in our player pool. Musgrove went 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA in June. He hasn’t allowed more than 3 ER in a start since mid May. And the Angels are likely without Mike Trout as he left last nights game with an apparent wrist injury.
TARIK SKUBAL ($7200 DK)
I’m so excited to have some Skubal back in my life. The Tigers SP was a favorite of The Sweet Spot last year and he paid off more often than not. Tonight he’s making his first MLB start since being shut down last August. And he gets to face one of the worst teams in the league in the Oakland A’s. OK correction, they are the worst team. So it’s all green here and even though he may not have a full workload, I love Skubal at this price and in this matchup. Let’s Ride!
KOOL-AIDE MAN (SWEET SPOT VALUE PITCHER UNDER $7K)
KOLBY ALLARD ($6800 DK)
The Braves have won 9 straight and are 24-3 in their last 27. Anyone they throw on the mound has a chance for an easy 4 points regardless of how they pitch. So that’s one reason to rely on a Braves pitcher. Then we look at Allard’s last start where he struck out 44% of batters he faced and this one almost becomes a free square. Sure Cleveland posts a low K rate, and they’re throwing their ace tonight, but there’s still plenty of reason to believe Allard can pitch well enough to bring back near 20 DK points.
BONUS PICKS
I do also like LUCAS GIOLITO ($9200 DK) AND EMMETT SHEEHAN ($6400 DK) today.
HITTERS – DRAFTKINGS
CLASSIC SLATE – 6:40 PM
SWEET SPOT STACK ATTACK: The stacks I like today are the DODGERS (vs Ortiz), the TIGERS (vs. Sears), and the BRAVES (vs Bieber).
CORE BATTERS
RONALD ACUNA JR ($6500 DK)
He’s the best hitter not named Ohtani and is setting records for his hitting, power, and speed.
For stacking, look at OZZIE ALBIES, MARCELL OZUNA, MICHAEL HARRIS AND MATT OLSON.
SPENCER TORKLESON ($4100 DK)
The Tigers 1B brings into tonight’s game a 5 game hitting streak and has 4 home runs in that stretch.
For stacking, I also like ZACK MCKINSTRY, MATT VIERLING, JAVIER BAEZ and ANDY IBANEZ.
SLAP HITTER (SWEET SPOT VALUE BATTER) – LESS THAN $3K
HENRY DAVIS ($2700 DK)
The Pirates catcher is batting 0.300 since his call up. The Pirates overall could be a sneaky stack including the likes of Gonzales and Suwinski.
