Scott Engel and Mark Paquette discuss the Main MLB DFS Slate on the 7/22 MLB DFS Podcast. This is a schedule that has a lot of interesting pitching picks. But gaining the right hitting advantages will not be easy. Weather concerns could make the best DFS Stack in Washington a risky play, according to Mark.

7/22 MLB DFS Podcast Pitching Picks

Gerrit Cole and Mike Clevinger are very pricey, and Robbie Ray may be the top alternative. Trevor Williams is a great salary saver. When your’e done listening to our 7/21 MLB DFS Podcast, please check out our premium weather blog to stay up to date.

With a nine game Main slate on FanDuel we have high, mid, and low end options for DFS MLB pitching.  One stands out far above the rest but we have cheaper options and potential pivots.

Top Overall DFS MLB Pitching Arm – Mike Clevinger ($9,400 FD).  Clevinger has a crazy K Rate of 37.9% on the season and gets the matchup we should be targeting with any RHP in the Detroit Tigers.  Even though they have added a few left handed bats since the All-Star break they still have a team K Rate of 24.3% vs. RHPs. In addition, the Tigers have lacked power as a team with an ISO of .145.  He’s my number one in all formats.

Tournament DFS MLB Pitching Pivot 1 – Robbie Ray ($9,600 FD).  Ray gets the Rangers, who currently have a K Rate of 26.4% against lefties and Ray has a K Rate of 30.8% on the season.  Hunter Pence came back to the lineup and makes the matchup a little tougher for lefties. With Ray you have to worry about walks since he has a 11.9% rate.  The great hitting weather and the walk rate make him a GPP only option for me. However, he could easily be the highest scoring pitcher and might break the slate.

Tournament DFS MLB Pitching Pivot 2 – Gerrit Cole ($11,400 FD).  While I never like to pay this much for a pitcher against a lineup that only strikes out 17.8% of the time against right handed pitchers, he is in play because he goes deep into games and has a massive K Rate of 37.4.  However, he will fall out of my player pool if Trout comes back tonight. I think if Trout is out of the lineup he becomes a great GPP play since the Angels have a team ISO of .165. This is important because where Cole struggles is with the long ball.  If the long ball risk is mitigated, I’d be willing to take my chances with him against a low K lineup. Ownership should be low for him tonight due to price and matchup.

Salary DFS MLB Pitching Saver – Trevor Richards ($6,400 FD).  San Diego has K Rate of 25.3% against Righties on the season but they also bring some power bats.  He has a 23.0% K Rate against righties and he could see up to seven of them in the Padres lineup. This power risk is mitigated some since Marlins Park is a pitcher’s park.  If Richards avoids the long ball, there are enough strikeouts in this lineup to pay off the price tag and possibly make him the best points per dollar play on the slate.

Scott Engel and Jason Mezrahi get into the full MLB schedule on the 7/12 MLB DFS Podcast. They break down the night slate on FanDuel and DraftKings. There are some good pitching bargains to help you get the bats you want, especially at Coors Field.

7/12 MLB DFS Podcast: Making The Pitching Calls

There is no need to spend up for Gerrit Cole when there are two viable and affordable starters in the Mets-Marlins matchup. Robbie Ray and Danny Duffy also offer opportunities to save salary for the hitting you want. There is a lot of chatter on Yonny Chirinos as well around the industry for valid reason due to his pricing.

7/12 MLB DFS Podcast Stacks

In the battle of the Grays at Colorado, there are some affordable Cincinnati bats if you want to run a stack. The Astros are also stackable, and the Giants make a nifty build as well, according to Jason.

We had a full 15-game DFS slate on Sunday June 30. All points and dollar amounts are based on DraftKings.

DFS Winners

Justin Smoak ($3,700)

Justin Smoak had a solid game against the Kansas City Royals yesterday, going 2-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. He came off the DL with a bang.

Smoak’s DFS Outlook

Justin Smoak needed a game like he had yesterday after a layoff dating back to mid-June. The Blue Jays continue their series against the Royals and Glenn Sparkman has given up seven homers in his last four starts. If Smoak performs well again today you may have to keep him on DFS radar as he can provide DFS production in bunches.

Kevin Pillar ($3,700)

Pillar had one of his best games of the season. He finished 4-for-5 with a double, home run, five RBI and two runs scored. He upped his batting average to .240 while being in the bottom-third of the Giants’ lineup. Pillar should be in your DFS lineup for today’s slate.

Pillar’s DFS Outlook

Kevin Pillar isn’t known as a prolific DFS hitter but is batting .293 in his past 15 games. The Giants continue their series against the Padres. Pillar has similar lefty/righty splits but has more power against lefty pitchers. The Padres are using rookie Logan Allen so look for Pillar to get a few hits.

DFS Losers

Robbie Ray ($10,000)

Robbie Ray did not have his best stuff yesterday against the San Francisco Giants. He threw just four innings and gave up four runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. He struggled throughout the entire game, throwing 83 pitches. Fade Robbie Ray in DFS into the All-Star break and hope he corrects his mistakes.

Ray’s DFS Outlook

Ray hasn’t been right throughout the month of June. He has posted a quality start in four of his six starts, but has a 1-4 record and 5.00 ERA. He is able to eat up innings but has not really been too productive in those starts as of late. Ray has 11 walks in his previous three starts, so control has been an issue as well. His next DFS start is Sunday afternoon against the Colorado Rockies. Fade Ray and see how he comes back in the second half of the season.

Michael Chavis ($10,500)

Michael Chavis did not have a good game in London against the New York Yankees. He went hitless in five at-bats with three strikeouts. He also struggled in the field, committing two errors at first base. Look for Chavis to get it going in DFS when he’s on the field next.

Chavis’ DFS Outlook

Chavis had difficulties offensively and defensively. The makeshift field was a little bizzare for MLB players who are creatures of habit. Chavis is still hitting .294 with four home runs and 14 RBI in his previous 15 games. The only blemish is the 24 strikeouts in the same span. The Red Sox get an off-day before traveling to Toronto to face the Blue Jays. Trent Thornton is coming off a rocky start and I do not expect him to make a recovery here so start Chavis in DFS .

DFS Injury Update

Luis Severino of the New York Yankees has been shut down from his throwing program for a second time after feeling something in his right lat again. General manager Brian Cashman said Severino feels 90 percent right now and will continue to rehab once he feels fully healthy.

David Robertson of the Philadelphia Phillies threw 20 fastballs and a few changeups off a mound on Sunday. Robertson is currently on the 60-day IL and is eyeing a late July return.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Marcell Ozuna, who was placed on the IL on Saturday after injuring his fingers diving back on a pickoff attempt, has small fractures at the base of his third and fourth fingers on his right hand.

Scott Engel and Mark Paquette get into the full MLB schedule on the 6/30 MLB DFS Podcast. They break down the Sunday slate on DraftKings and FanDuel. Making pitching decisions will not be easy and there are a few notable stacks to choose from.

6/30 MLB DFS Podcast Pitching Notes

The big question is whether to spend up for Max Scherzer at an astronomical price. Gerrit Cole is an alternative, but will a Houston starter disappoint for a second consecutive day? Robbie Ray could be your prime choice if you want to spend a bit less.

6/30 MLB DFS Podcast Hitting Notes

The Astros are looking nearly complete again, and Jose Altuve is at a great price on DraftKings. You really have to spend up for Cleveland bats. Toronto offers a quality option or two. Should you really consider Royals and Padres stacks?

it is a 14 game schedule for this last Sunday in June as the Red Sox “host” the Yankees across the pond at 10 am. Will today’s ace (Max Scherzer) disappoint like last night’s (Justin Verlander) did? The odds say no, but also Coors will likely have more than eight runs scored. Something has to give when it comes to designing your DFS lineups today. It is going to be very difficult to make a choice between spending on Max and spending on Coors bats. And we have other aces to chose from as well!

Upper-Tier DFS Arms

Max Scherzer, Nationals at Tigers ($12,500 FD, $12,300 DK): This just might be the highest price tags on a player/pitcher that you will see this year. So it comes down to this: do you pay up for Scherzer and require an ace start out of him (anything less and your day is likely done)? Or do you find a more affordable arm and try to get some big Coors bat in? Decisions, decisions today for sure! What makes this start for Max even more interesting is Scherzer hasn’t started at Comerica Park since joining the Nationals in 2015. The last time this ace faced his former team was his 20-strikeout game in ’16. Scherzer is 5-0 with a 0.97 ERA with three straight double-digit strikeout starts in the month of June. Scherzer certainly has to be in your cash-game consideration.

Upgrade to Premium Gold

Gerrit Cole, Mariners at Astros ($11,200 FD, $11,900 DK): This is not much of a discount today for sure! The last time Cole and Scherzer pitched on the same day, I chose to take the discount with Cole and spent up a bit for bats. That really did not work out for me. And I do not think that works out for you today either. Obviously, he is in play every time he takes the mound but today I am considering him GPP-only. Cole has posted a quality start in each of his past six games, with a 2.19 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 37 innings in that span. He has pitched great recently, coming off a stretch where he has allowed two earned runs or less in eight of his last nine starts. He already has 151 strikeouts on the season and 300 is not an impossibility.

Middle-Tier DFS Arms

Blake Snell, Rangers at Rays ($8,500 FD, $8,000 DK): Oh how the mighty have fallen. Look at that price on DK, talk about savings. He is obviously a GPP-only choice here with how the results have been recently. But the upside is still there. Advanced statistics (K%: 31.6% in ’18, 31.7% this season, xFIP: .316 in ’18 vs. 3.20 in ’19) tell us that Snell is no different than he was last year. Our eyes tell us something else. He is not a choice for the faint of heart (or cash-game players).

Robbie Ray, Diamondbacks at Giants ($9,600 FD, $10,000 DK): It is debatable as to whether he should be considered middle-tier or upper-tier, Ray is beginning to pitch like a potential ace. Ray has nine punch-outs in each of his last two starts and it seems a 15 K game is just around the corner. He has good history against both the Giants and at this park, going 5-1 with a 3.01 ERA in 13 career starts, including 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA in six outings at Oracle Park. Even through his struggles earlier in the year, Ray has remained consistently able to throw strike three. He’s averaging 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings, 0.3 short of his NL-leading average from 2017.

Bargain Basement DFS Arm

Andrew Heaney, Athletics at Angels ($7,400 FD, $7,500 DK): When you look at cheap pitchers, you at least want some upside. And the easiest way to fantasy points are strikeouts. And with Heaney, we have a cheap pitcher with strikeout potential, with 36 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched on the year. It is an afternoon game in Anaheim, so the shadows and bright sunshine can make the ball more difficult to pick up from the batters’ perspective and this could give Heaney an edge.

Monkey Knife Fight Pick of the Day

Joc Pederson, Cody Bellinger, Max Muncy over 1.5 HRs

The old saying is scared money does not make money. So let’s go back to where some people may be scared away from today, Coors Field. With only eight runs scored there last night. some people got burned there (I did! I did!) 90 degrees in the middle of the day with very little wind? Sounds like a good recipe for HRs. Oh, did I mention someone named Chi-Chi is pitching for the Rockies? I thought he was a golfer from the 80s.

Scott Engel and Jason Mezrahi are featured in the 6/26 MLB DFS Podcast. Listen to get caught up on who they are planning to play this afternoon and tonight. They break down all the slates and they debate on whether Yu Darvish can survive a matchup with the Braves lineup.

Should You Stack Against Vargas?

Today’s DFS Podcast is full of spirited back and forth discussions. Jason goes right in for a Phillies stack against Jason Vargas, but Scott cautions that the Mets pitcher has been performing well overall recently. On the full slate, Jason is leaning heavily towards using German Marquez. The featured matchup of the night has Charlie Morton opposing Jake Odorizzi. Do you dare use Morton against the Minnesota lineup? Is the Twins starter beginning to fade and cannot be trusted?

DFS PROS Jason Mezrahi and Matt Striker are featured in the 6/25 MLB DFS Podcast. Listen to get caught up on who they are planning to play tonight. They break down the large 15-game slate and Matt tries to explain how he feels about the New York Mets.

Is Max Worth Top Dollar?

The first decision you have to make on this slate is to pay up for the top end pitching or not. Max Scherzer and Gerrit Cole are the clear-cut aces, but you will have to pay to play. There are value guys but they each garner some risk. Madison Bumgarner, Robbie Ray, Jack Flaherty, Chris Bassitt, and Andrew Heaney can present some value. They all make sense if you can stomach putting your money at risk. Is it worth it when you know Mad Max is staring you down with two different colored eyes? So listen closely to the 6/25 MLB DFS Podcast to find the hidden gems on the Daily Fantasy Baseball Slate.

It is a really small slate due to travel. Picking the correct arm will be crucial.

Top-Tier Arms

Aaron Nola, Phillies at Padres ($9,600 FD, $9,600 DK): Nola has regained whatever he was missing early in the season. He allowed only one run in seven innings in his last start Wednesday against the Cardinals. He is now 4-0 with a 2.50 ERA in his last seven starts. He has not allowed more than three runs in any of those outings. He gets a juicy matchup against the Padres, who strike out at the second highest rate in the league against righties at 24.9% and they rank 21st in OPS at .152, The Pods’ wOBA is dead last at .291. This was supposed to be an exciting year for the Padres….well against righties it certainly is not. Pencil Nola in as your #1 target in cash games.

Walker Buehler, Dodgers at Diamondbacks ($10,400 FD, $8,900 DK): Prior to his last start against the pesky Mets, Buehler had four consecutive quality starts. He looks to get on track against a Diamondbacks team that ranks 20th in wOBA against righties at .320 and strikes out at a sixth highest clip of 22.6%. I prefer Nola as a pitcher and his matchup, so let’s make Buehler a GPP-only candidate, but love that price on DK! Make him one of you arms on that site.

Middle-Tier Arm

Robbie Ray, Dodgers at Diamionbacks ($8,000 FD, $9,200 DK): We all know the potential is there with Ray. His K rate is through the roof at 11.78 per nine innings. If he could only get it together and stop walking so many batters (35 batters walked in only 62.2 innings pitched) and go deep into games (he has not gone six full innings on the season yet) he would be one of the top pitchers in baseball, like in 2017 when he went 15-5 with a 2,89 ERA and 215 strikeouts in only 162 innings pitched. One thing in Ray’s favor tonight is that the Dodgers clobber righties but really are just average against lefties. Their ISO vs. lefties of .177 ranks 17th in the league. He is obviously a GPP-only choice in my book.

Bargain-Basement Arm

Eric Lauer, Phillies at Padres ($7,400 FD, $7,300 DK): Take the savings here and spend up on almost any bat that you want! Lauer has a 1.50 ERA in his last three starts, and he appears to have found his rhythm. The 23-year-old lefty hasn’t walked a batter since a May 10th start in Colorado, and he’s started to rely on his curve for weak contact and swings and misses. If the Phillies are over-anxious against Lauer it could be a long night for the bats. He is a GPP-only choice to allow you to spend up for almost any bat you want.
