Ottawa Senators

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Saturday Slapshot.   We have a nice-sized 8-game slate of NHL DFS tonight. We have some glaring mismatches tonight between teams jockeying for playoff position and teams jockeying for Conner Bedard. This should be a fun, high-scoring night. Lock is an hour earlier than normal tonight so you’ll want to make sure you’re dialed into that.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Petr Mrazek vs. Nashville – This Blackhawks/Predators game tonight will be a battle between two teams that have given up on the 2022/2023 campaign. Both have traded away key offensive assets and are throwing out questionable NHL lineups. Mrazek has been playing some solid goalie. He’s been in double-digit DK points in 5 of his last 6 games and this is a game he should excel in. Mrazek is never a safe goalie, but I really like him tonight.

Juuse Saros vs. Chicago – If you want to go with the safer play, Saros is your best bet. Yes, I’m recommending both goalies in this one. The Blackhawks’ offense is really bad now. Gone are both Kane and Domi. The two guys that were keeping this offense afloat. With the lineup that the Blackhawks will be using nightly going forward, they are almost a lock for Bedard. Saros has a very real chance at a shutout tonight.

NHL DFS Stacks

Ottawa 1 (Stutzle, Tkachuck, Giroux) + Chabot vs. Columbus

The Senators should be able to have their way tonight with Columbus. More than likely starting in net for the Blue Jackets tonight will be newcomer Michael Hutchison. He’s posted a sub .900 save percentage in the AHL this season which is bad. The Blue Jackets are giving up a ton of shots right now, with over 35 per game over the last 2 weeks. With having shotty goaltending tonight, this sets up for a monster night for Ottawa.

This top line for Ottawa has been great. They’ve combined for 20 points over their last 5 games. The goals are pretty spread out as well with this line so a full line stack is very much in play. That said, my priority would be Stutzle and Tkachuck. Both guys also fire the puck on net a ton and you should be able to get the 5 shot bonus on DK with them. This line has a great opportunity to be the top line of the slate.

Edmonton 1 (McDavid, Kulak, Hyman) + Nurse vs. Winnipeg

Even though Edmonton is on the back end of a back-to-back, I still really like their chances tonight to do some damage. Their offense is always explosive and they’ll be playing against a free-falling Jets team. Over the last 2 weeks, the Jets are just 1-5-1, while allowing close to 4 goals per game. What was once a top team in the league, is now just a struggling team.

There’s nothing I need to tell you to play McDavid. He’s the best player in the league, one of the best players of our generation, and having the best year of his career. There will always be that chance that he has a subpar game, I just don’t think it will be tonight. Over his last 5 games, Kulak has 4 assists and is just $3.4k on DK. He’ll be a nice way to bring down the cost of McDavid.

Los Angeles 1 (Kempe, Kopitar, Fiala) + Doughty vs. St. Louis

One of the best matchups on the board tonight will be the Kings vs. Blues. The Blues have been horrendous over the last couple of weeks. They are giving up over 4 goals per game and over 15.5 high-danger chances per game. That’s not going to cut it and they should struggle vs. a very good Kings team tonight.

This top line for LA has been very good this season. Kopitar has been very hot over his last 5 games as he has 6 goals. While Kempe has been quiet, he has been firing on the net with 16 shots over his last 5 games. At some point, one of those shots will go in. Against a defensively challenged Blues team, this line should do well tonight.

Other Stacks: Pitt 1 and 2, Fla 1, Was 1, Ott 2, Tor 1 and 2, Edm 2 or PP

NHL DFS Top Value Defenseman

  • Martin Fehervary – $3.7k on DK
  • Radko Gudas – $3.3k on Dk
  • Marcus Pettersson – $3.6k on DK

Summary

We have a fun day of NHL DFS in store. A handful of the games tonight are extreme mismatches. Nothing is a given, but teams like Ottawa, Toronto, and LA should all crush tonight.

Welcome to New Year’s Eve edition of the Saturday Slapshot.   On this final day of the year, we have a total of 12 games on tap. However, many of the games are spread throughout the day. I’ll be focusing on the 5-game slate of NHL DFS that kicks off at 7pm EST.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Jake Oettinger ($8.4K DK/$8.2k FD) vs. San Jose Sharks – If you’re looking to pay up for a goalie tonight, Jake Oettinger should be on your radar. He’s in arguably the best matchup of any of the expensive goalies tonight and also the most talented. He’ll be facing off against a Sharks team that has been scoring less than 3 goals per game over the last 2 weeks.

Oettinger has been having a solid season, with a career-high .920 save % and a nearly career-low 2.38 GAA. Dallas doesn’t give up too many shots, so with Oettinger, we have a limited ceiling and a high floor. Oettinger would be the ideal choice for your Cash game lineups.

Ilya Samsonov ($7.8k DK/$6.5k FD) vs. Colorado Avalanche– This pick is somewhat predicated on Nathan MacKinnon still being out. There is a chance that he plays though and if he does, pivoting may make sense. That said, this is a solid spot for Samsonov tonight. The Avalanche offense has not been powerful recently, scoring just 2.5 goals per game over the last 2 weeks.

Samsonov’s price on FD tonight is criminal. He shouldn’t be that low and makes for a great GPP play, even if MacKinnon plays. We won’t need too much for him to return value on that site and even a goal or 2 won’t hinder his value. I still may run out Samsonov on DK even if Mac plays because that will just mean more volume, and more volume equals the chance for more DK points.

NHL DFS Stacks

Ottawa 2 (Pinto, DeBrincat, Batherson) + Hamonic vs. Detroit

Vegas has Detroit as slight favorites in this one, but I’ll be honest, I think Ottawa dominates in this one. Detroit has been challenged defensively all year and it hasn’t been much better of late. Over the last 2 weeks, they’ve given up on average 4.8 goals per game. Detroit will also more than likely have Alex Nedeljkovic in net. He’s given up at least 4 goals in each of his last 3 starts. He’s not a good goalie and one that anytime he’s in net, we want to pick skaters against him. Think Jake Arrieta or Dallas Keuchel type bad.

Both of the top lines for Ottawa are in play tonight, but I have a slight preference for their second line. Alex DeBrincat leads the team in goals over the last 5 games with 4 of them and that’s what I’m looking to chase. I’ll look to pair him with Batherson who leads the Sens in points over the last 5 games with 6. These 2 have been leading the offense for Ottawa and my hope is that it continues tonight in a favorable matchup. If you want to go full stack, Pinto is in play, but as of right now my lean is locking in DeBrincat and Batherson.

Dallas 1 (Hintz, Robertson, Pavelski) + Heiskanen vs. San Jose

Another team that’s been challenged defensively recently is the Sharks. Over the last 2 weeks, they’re giving up slightly more than 4.3 goals per game. Goaltending has mostly been their issue as their goalies have a save % of just 85.71% over that stretch. In the net for San Jose tonight should be James Reimer. Reimer has given up 6 goals in 2 of his last 3 games. That’s bad, no other way to put it.

We’re going to attack San Jose tonight with the top line for Dallas. I’m going to be mostly focused on Hintz and Robertson here. They’re the core of not only this line but this team. Over the last 5 games, they’ve combined for 12 points. Hintz being the goal scorer and Robertson being the playmaker. You can go certainly go full stack here with Pavelski, but I don’t think he’s needed. Roll out Hintz and Robertson with confidence tonight.

Calgary 1 (Lindholm, Dube, Toffoli) + Hanifin vs. Vancouver

This top line for Calgary tonight is very affordable and in a great spot. The Canucks just aren’t a good team. Over the last 2 weeks, they’re giving up close to 4 goals per game and nearly 14 high-danger chances per game.

The 2 guys that I’m mostly focused on here are going to be Tyler Toffoli and Elias Lindholm. Toffoli leads the team in goals over the last 5 games with 4. He’s also added in a pair of assists to give him 6 points over the last 5 to lead the team in points. Lindholm has had 5 assists in his last 5 to lead the team in assists. This line tonight has some really high upside, especially Toffoli and Lindholm. Dube can be added in to bring the cost of the line down as he’s just $4k on DK tonight. Just know there’s little upside with him.

Other Stacks: Ottawa 1, Calgary 2, Tor 1 and 2, Col 1(only if MacKinnon plays), Edm 1(McDavid is on an epic run right now and you can certainly play him as a 1-off)

NHL DFS Top Value Defenseman

  • Jake Walman – $3.4k on DK – He’s been a blocked shot machine recently.
  • Tyler Meyers – $2.7k on Dk
  • Brett Kulak – $2.6k on DK – 11 blocks in his last 3.

Summary

Hope everyone reading this today has a safe and Happy New Year! Let’s make smart decisions with both our NHL DFS lineups and when going out tonight.

Welcome to Wednesday’s edition of Between the Benches.   We have a small 3-game slate tonight. With only 6 teams in action, some of our spots will be limited.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

I should start by saying that goaltending is a dumpster fire tonight. A case could be made to stack against each and every goalie tonight. That said, we still need to pick one or 2 so let’s go.

Jacob Markstrom ($7.8K DK/$7.5k FD) vs. Vancouver Canucks – We have a battle of 2 Canadien teams tonight in Calgary. My lean right now is to favor the home team as their the favorites in this one. Jacob Markstrom is coming into this game off his best game of the year. On Monday night vs. the Canadiens, Markstrom stopped 37 of 38 shots and scored 27 DK points. The 27 DK points were just the second time this season that Markstrom passed the 20-point mark and was also the most he’s had this year. My hope is that it increases his confidence and he puts up another monster night tonight.

Filip Gustavsson ($7.7k DK/$8.5k FD) vs. Detroit Red Wings– The Minnesota Wild come into this one of the heaviest favorites on the board tonight and rightfully so. They are 5-2 in their last 7 while the Red Wings are just 2-3-2. The Red Wings’ offense has been abysmal of late, scoring just 2.29 goals per game over those 7. Tonight they’ll get a tough matchup vs. Gustavsson.

While Gustavsson hasn’t played too much, when he’s played he’s played well. He’s coming off a dominant performance vs. the Canucks last week that saw him shut them out on 35 shots. He’s far from safe tonight, but I really like his chances to be one of the more productive goalies on this slate.

NHL DFS Stacks

Minnesota 1 (Steele, Kaprizov, Zuccarello) + Spurgeon vs. Detroit

With limited options tonight, I suspect that the Wild will be chalky tonight. They just have so many things in their corner tonight. The Red Wings’ defense has been bad. They’re giving up close to 16 high-danger chances per game and more than 34 shots on goal. To make matters even better for us, they’ll get to face Alex Nedeljkovic tonight. The owner of a GAA north of 4 and a save % south of 9.

This top line for Minnesota hasn’t quite been playing off the charts of late, but they have a ton of firepower with Kaprizov. Kaprizov is one of the more skilled players in the league and even though he has just 2 goals in his last 5, he’s taken 19 shots and 26 scoring chances. The numbers will come back for him and tonight’s a perfect spot for it to happen. Zuc is the preferred pairing partner here as he’s the playmaker and if Kaprizov scores, will more than likely get the apple.

Ottawa 2 (Pinto, DeBrincat, Batherson) + Hamonic vs. Montreal

It would be an understatement to say this season has been a disappointment for the Senators. They came into the season with high hopes but have yet to live up to them. That said, they are playing better and are 4-2-1 in their last 7. They’ll get a nice matchup tonight vs. the Canadiens, a team giving up more than 3 goals per game over the last 2 weeks.

I’m siding with the second line here tonight thanks to the strong play of all 3. Over their last 5 games, this line has combined for 15 points. Most of that production has come from DeBrincat and Batherson and they’ll be my core here. The 2 have combined for 13 of the 15 points. Pinto can 100% be added into this stack tonight as he’s shown some upside at times this season.

Calgary 1 (Backlund, Huberdeau, Toffoli) + Hanifin vs. Vancouver

Of all the teams playing tonight, no one is giving up more goals per game over the last 2 weeks than the Vancouver Canucks. At over 4 goals per game over the last 2 weeks, they are far and away worse than any other team tonight. They’re also giving up the second most high-danger chances per game at 15.80, slightly better than Detroit.

We’ll attack them with the top line for Calgary, a line that is coming alive. This line has combined for 13 points over their last 5, with Toffoli and Backlund having 4 each and Huberdeau having 5. Both Toffoli and Huberdeau play together on the top power-play unit and because of that correlation, they’ll be my preferred targets here. That said, a full stack here is in play.

Other Stacks: Ottawa 1, Calgary 2, Montreal 1 and 2

NHL DFS Top Value Defenseman

  • Luke Schenn – $3.3k on DK
  • Nikita Zaitsez – $2.9k on Dk
  • Erik Brannstrom – $2.5k on DK

Summary

It’s a small slate tonight, but it also has the makings of a high scoring slate as we have some poor defensive teams. I’ll be rocking a ton of Minnesota and Ottawa tonight with my NHL DFS stacks.

Make sure to use our Projection model when setting lineups.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

Welcome to Wednesday’s edition of Between the Benches.   I’ll be focusing on tonight’s 3-game main slate of NHL DFS on DraftKings and FanDuel.  A couple of the games tonight should be higher scoring, while the game between the Blues and Blackhawks has the makings of a snooze fest.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Jordan Binnington ($8.1K DK/$7.1k FD) vs. Chicago Blackhawks – I’ll be targeting both goalies in this one as neither team has really been scoring.  First I’ll look to target Binnington.  The Blues are favored here and I do expect them to get the W.  The Blackhawks’ offense has just been absolutely anemic.  They’ve scored just 6 goals in their last 5 games for an average of just 1.20 goals per game.  That’s pretty bad.

With Binnington, we also have a goalie who’s starting to play a little bit better.  He’s been in double-digit DK points in 4 straight games and is coming off arguably his 2 best games of the season.  I like him on both sites tonight, but that price on FD is extremely tempting!

Arvid Soderblom ($7.3k DK/$7.8k FD) vs. St. Louis Blues – If you’re looking to save at goalie tonight, look no further than Arvid Soderblom.  At just $7.3k he’ll save you a few dollars allowing you to pay a little bit more for your skaters.  Through 5 starts this season, he’s been pretty decent.  He’s sporting a 2.60 GAA and a .931 save percentage.

He gets a somewhat favorable matchup tonight vs. a Blues team that has only been scoring 2.50 goals per game over the last couple of weeks.  With them not firing on all cylinders and Soderblom at an extremely enticing price point, I plan on firing him up in my GPP lineups tonight.

NHL DFS Stacks

Ottawa 1 (Stutzle, Giroux, Tkachuk) + Hamonic vs. Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres are free-falling and also happened to have played last night.  The Sabres are also giving up more than 4.5 goals per game over their last 7 games.  All those factors combined have me all over Ottawa tonight, specifically their top unit from Stutzle, Giroux, and Tkachuk.  These three guys have done the bulk of the scoring for the Senators of late.  Combined, they have 20 points over their last 5 games.

Giroux has seemingly found the fountain of youth as he is on absolute fire right now.  Over his last 5, Giroux has 3 goals and 5 assists.  At $5.5k on DK tonight, he is extremely fairly priced.  While Tkachuk only has 5 points in his last 5, he should absolutely have more than that.  He has an xG of 3.93 while having 0 goals in his last 5 games.  At some point, those shots are going to hit the back of the net.  I want to make sure I have him in my lineup when they do.  Hamonic is where we can save with this stack.  He’s only $3.8k on DK but is averaging close to 5 shots plus blocks over his 5.  He’s a solid value play here.

Los Angeles 2 (Danault, Moore, Arvidsson) + Durzi vs. Edmonton

This is where we’ll save some of our money tonight.  The Kings are in a great spot tonight vs. an Edmonton Oilers team that is struggling right now.  Over their last 6 games, the Oilers are giving up 4.33 goals per game and a slate-leading 17 high-danger chances per game.  Those 17 are significantly higher than any of the other 5 teams playing tonight.  The Oilers have given up a massive amount of scoring chances over the last 2 weeks at 224.

We’ll attack them tonight with the second line for the Kings.  All three of Danault, Moore, and Arvidsson have been active in the scoring.  Danault leads the Kings in points over their last 5 games with 5 points.  All three guys are also very fairly priced as the cheapest is $4.4k and the most expensive is $4.8k.

Buffalo 1 (Thompson, Skinner, Tuch) + Dahlin vs. Ottawa Senators

While the Sabres have been struggling on the defensive side of things, it really hasn’t impacted their ability on offense.  Of all 6 teams on tonight’s slate, no one has a higher goals per game than the Sabres at 3.14.  This game could very well turn into a shoot and with it being such a small slate, a full game stack is very much in play.  The offense for the Sabres is very much centralized in their top line.

After a breakout season in 2021, Tage Thompson has continued to score this year.  With 11 goals through 16 games, Thompson is one of the leading goal-scorers in the league right now as he’s tied for fourth. He’s pricy at $7.7k on DK, but he always stands a chance at scoring a goal.  Next up will be Skinner and Tuch.  Both guys are priced similarly so if I had to pick, I’m picking Skinner as he’s been scoring more goals than Tuch.  That said, you should be able to squeeze all 3 guys in tonight.

Other Stacks: Edmonton 1 and 2, St. Louis 1 and 2

NHL DFS Top Value Defenseman

  • Alexander Edler – $2.8k on DK
  • Jarred Tinordi – $2.7k on Dk
  • Erik Brannstrom – $2.6k on DK

Summary

We have a small, but mighty slate tonight.  I plan on going with a game stack of the Senators/Sabres tonight.  A late night hammer of a stack with the Oilers/Kings is also in play.

Make sure to use our Projection model when setting lineups.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL DFS slate on Fanduel and DraftKings.  Tonight we have a solid 7 game main slate.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

Goaltending

Jeremy Swayman ($8.2k DK/$8.1k FD) vs. San Jose Sharks – Over the past month, the Sharks have not been able to muster much offense.  They’ve been averaging just 2.44 goals per game over the last 30 days.  Guys like Hertl and Meier have gone ice cold and because of that, I’m happy to use a goalie against them tonight.

Swayman himself has been pretty good of late.  Over his last 4 contests, he hasn’t scored less than 19 DK points and has only given up 4 goals over that stretch.  He’s in a great spot tonight and I plan on going heavy on him.  He’s already been confirmed as the starter tonight.

Andrew Hammond ($7.2k DK/$6.9k FD) vs.Ottawa Senators – Another team struggling to score goals right now is the Ottawa Senators.  Since January 26, they’ve been averaging just 2.21 goals per game.  That’s bad.  Hammond hasn’t played much this season.  In fact, he’s only played in one contest but he fared extremely well against the Islanders, stopping 30 of 32 shots.  He’s not safe by any means.  But he’s extremely cheap and opens up a ton of salary for us to spend on offense tonight.

Stacks

Montreal 1 (Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Josh Anderson) + Jeff Petry

If you would have told me a month ago that I’d be writing up a Canadiens line as one of my favorite lines, I would have laughed at you.  Martin St. Louis has changed the culture around the team.  They’re currently riding a 4 game winning streak since MSL took over behind the bench and are finally playing some inspired hockey.  With Montreal, it all starts the kid Cole Caufield.

Over his last 5 games he has 4 goals and 4 assists.  He has a solid 19 scoring chances over that stretch as well.  He’s making things happen right now and is somehow still priced under $5k on DK.  I’m going to side with Anderson on this stack, although I wouldn’t blame if you go with Suzuki or all 3.  Anderson is just $3.7k tonight on DK and has 3 goals in his last 5.  Look for the good times to keep rolling against the Senators tonight.

Toronto 1 (Matthews, Bunting, Marner) + Reilly

With the savings we’re getting from the Canadiens tonight, we should be able to squeeze in the expensive and explosive Maple Leafs against the Red Wings tonight.  If we look at what the Red Wings have done defensively over their last 10 games, they’re someone that we can attack.  They’ve been averaging 4.20 goals against over their last 10.  That’s the highest on the slate.  It’s been due to some really poor goaltending as their goalies have just an 87% save percentage over their past 10.

When it comes to the Leafs’ offense, it all starts with Matthews.  I saw an interesting stat about him the other day.  Over his last 100 games, he has scored 77 goals.  That’s an insane pace.  The duo of Matthews and Marner is one of the best in the league.  They are extremely expensive as they’ll combine for $17.2k on DK tonight.  The cheap way to go here is to pair Matthews with Bunting tonight.  The Leafs should put up a crooked number tonight and I’ll want a part of it.

Ottawa 1 (Stutzle, Tkachuk, Gaudette) + Chabot

I know, I recommended Hammond tonight.  He’s a risky play and if you aren’t comfortable playing him, I’d recommend going with some Senators tonight.  The Canadiens are playing much better hockey since MSL took over.  That’s undeniable.  That said though, it’s still the same personnel that’s been hot garbage for the majority of the year.  While they’ve been solid for 4, over their last 11 games they are still giving up almost 4 goals per game.  At some point the honeymoon will be over and the Canadiens defense will come back down to earth.

It’s entirely possible it happens tonight.  While the Senators haven’t been scoring much, they still have some pieces that are doing well and are inexpensive.  Stutzle has 4 goals over his past 5 games to go along with 13 scoring chances.  While Tkachuk hasn’t been overly productive, he still has 18 scoring chances over his last 5, 7 of which were high danger chances.  He’s got all the talent in the world and can easily blow up tonight against the Canadiens.

Other stacks (TB 1 and 2, Col 1, Nash 1, Det 1 and 2, CGY 1 and 2)

Top Defenseman

  • Moritz Seider
  • Thomas Chabot
  • Mikhail Sergachev
  • Brayden McNabb
  • Roman Josi
  • Christopher Tanev
  • Cale Makar

Summary

We have some high-powered offenses going tonight with the Leafs, Avalanche, and Flames in action.  I love the Canadiens/Senators game as a potential game stack tonight.  2 suspect defenses going in that one.

Make sure to use our optimizer when setting lineups.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL DFS slate on Fanduel and DraftKings.  What was originally supposed to be a nice sized 9 game slate has turned into a smaller, but still fun 6 game slate thanks to some COVID postponements.  My goal here will be to provide you with a solid foundation for your lineup.

Win Daily Sports is proudly partnered with Monkey Knife Fight. MKF is offering you a FREE Win Daily Gold membership for three months ($150 value) simply for making your first deposit on Monkey Knife Fight. And if free gold isn’t attractive enough, they’re also offering a 100% match bonus up to $100 when you use promo code WINDAILY.

Before we dive in I want to highlight some terms you’ll see in my article that may be foreign to you:

  • Corsi – Any shot attempt (goals, shots on net, misses and blocks) outside of the shootout
  • Even Strength – Play where both teams have the same number of players (including goalies) on the ice. Includes 5v5, 4v4, 3v3
  • Power Play – Play where the team has more players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 5v4, 5v3, 4v3
  • Penalty Kill – Play where the team has fewer players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 4v5, 3v4, 3v5

Goaltending

Frederik Andersen ($8.2k DK/$7.9k FD) vs. Los Angeles Kings – Outside of the fact that the Hurricanes aren’t giving up much in the way of shots, I really like this spot tonight for Andersen.  The Kings just haven’t been scoring much over the past 2 weeks with a goals per game under 3.  The good news for is that even though the Hurricanes don’t give up much in the way of shots, the Kings do take a ton of shots.

My hope here is that the two teams meet somewhere in the middle and the Kings take enough shots to make paying more than $8k for Andersen worthwhile.  Before giving up 3 goals to Detroit on Thursday night, Andersen had been playing some stellar hockey as he had given up just 4 goals in his prior 3 games.  Look for him to get back on track tonight against the Kings.

Thatcher Demko ($7.5k DK/$7.3k FD) vs. Toronto Maple Leafs – This is far from a safe pick, but if we look past Auston Matthews tonight there’s not much else to love from the Maple Leafs.  Tavares is on the COVID list and was one of their leading scorers over the last 2 weeks.  Now you have your second line centered by David Kampf instead of Taveres which somewhat neutralizes William Nylander.

Toronto will not be sending out their best tonight and I’ll want to take advantage of it with a goalie that is playing some of his best hockey of the year.  Demko hasn’t scored under 17 DK points since late November and is becoming one of the more reliable goalies in the NHL.  He’s coming into tonight riding a 5 game winning streak.  While it’s always scary playing against the Leafs, Demko is playing great right now and should be in consideration when picking your goalie tonight.

I have little interest in any of the other goalies tonight so will be sticking with the two that I mentioned.

Stacks

Edmonton 1 (McDavid/Puljujarvi/Foegele) + Nurse vs. Seattle Kraken

Going into their last game against Columbus I mentioned in our discord that this top line was due for some positive regression.  Boy did they deliver with 74 DK points between them.  This line has combined for 60 scoring chances over their last 5 games, with 27 of them being high danger chances.  Still, they’ve only scored 4 goals, 3 of which were scored by Puljujarvi the other night.

There’s still some more positive regression coming for them and I want to make sure I have them in my lineup when it happens.  Outside of McDavid this line is dirt cheap on DK.  Foegele is only $2.8K and Pulj is only $4.4k.  What if I told that you that of all the players available on tonight’s slate, only 2 have a higher iCF than Pulj over their last 5 games?    Over his last 5 games Pulj has a iCF of 36 with 25 scoring chances.  Him and McDavid are my priority here, but if you need the salary savings Foegele makes for a great value.

New Jersey 1 (Hughes/Zacha/Bratt) + Hamilton vs. Detroit Red Wings

Yes, I know that the Devils only have a 2.25 goal total coming into tonight’s slate.  Vegas has that wrong in my opinion.  Detroit has been a mess defensively of late.  Over the last 2 weeks they have a corsi % of 47.58%.  Only Ottawa has a worse %.  They’re also giving up 4.5 goals per game thanks to some subpar goaltending.  While the Devils aren’t one of the powerhouse offenses we think of in the NHL, they stand a strong chance of exploding tonight.

With this stack I’m going to focus on both Hughes and Zacha.  Both guys have combined for 38 scoring chances over their last 5 games, 18 of them high danger chances.  If you want to go for a full stack here I wouldn’t talk you off of Bratt. He’s also been solid of late with 4 points in his last 5 games.  This trio also plays together on the top power play unit for Jersey.  Look for the Devils to make Vegas look silly for the implied total tonight.

Ottawa 1 (Norris/Tkachuk/Batherson) + Chabot vs. Philadelphia Flyers

This game tonight has the makings of a 5-4 game as both goalies in this one are trash and neither team likes to play defense.  Well they may like to play it, but are just not good at it.  Both teams in this one have corsi %’s below 50.  Below 50 in the NHL is bad.  I’m siding with Ottawa in this matchup because the Senators offense has been pretty good of late, outside of their 2-1 loss to the Lightning.  Lightning > Flyers.

If we think Ottawa offense, we automatically go to their top line.  Their top line has been scoring at will of late and is one of the hottest lines in the NHL.  Drake Batherson has been red hot.  In his last 5 games he has 10 points.  His line mates haven’t been slouches either.  Both Norris and Tkachuk have combined for 9 goals in the last 5.  This line is rolling and I just can’t see the Flyers slowing them down.  Look for them to score often tonight.

Other stacks (Both top lines for Philly 2, Carolina 1 and 2, Van 2, Tor 1 (if you aren’t playing Demko), Det 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Darnell Nurse ($6.8k DK) – Edmonton Oilers – 6 shots + blocks in his last 5
  • Jacob Slavin ($5.3k) – Carolina Hurricanes – 5.2 shots + blocks in his last 5
  • Thomas Chabot ($5.9k) – Ottawa Senators
  • Quinn Hughes ($5.1k DK)  – Vancouver Canucks
  • Travis Sanheim ($3.1k DK) – Philadelphia Flyers – Great Value
  • Jonas Siegenthaler ( $2.6k DK) – New Jersey Devils – Playing on the top D unit, great value

Summary

More than ever, you’ll need to keep on top of news tonight.  Covid is running rampant in the NHL right now and we’re seeing scratches right up until games start.  I can’t preface this enough, make sure you have pivots ready to your lineups.  Games are getting postponed left and right.

With that all said, I anticipate this being a high scoring slate.  Only 4 of the teams playing tonight are giving up less than 3 goals a game over the last 2 weeks.  My preference in stacks are Edmonton, then Ottawa, then Jersey.  Between values like Foegele and then some of the Defenseman I listed in the Top Defenseman section, you should have no issue fitting top plays into your lineup tonight.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

NHL Betting Picks Wednesday 5/12

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Betting Picks Wednesday 5/12. This will be the last regular season article as we shift gears towards the playoffs. There will be a Playoff Preview article coming out on Friday before the first series begins Saturday. The Model went 1-1 last night with craziness happening in that Caps/Bruins game. In the morning I took the over 5.5 because that seemed like good value. Then this news came out:

So I quickly went to hammer the Caps because the ML at the time was -130. I instantly hated the over and hedged it out with the under. The Caps ML climbed all the way up to -210 giving me over a 10% CLV. And then the game took place and there was absolutely nothing going on. The B’s scored first and the Caps tied it. Then with a second left the Caps finished the game off and barely won 2-1. Quite the roller coaster of emotions. On to today, I doubt anything can top that.

We have 5 games on the NHL slate tonight. Let’s take a look at the updated profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

Dashboard 1

To interact with the dashboard click here.

Dashboard Edges

  • Oilers Money Line (-127) over the Canadiens
  • Senators Puck Line (+1.5, -175) over the Maple Leafs
  • Senators/Leafs Under 6.5 (-110)
  • Wild Puck Line (-1.5, +170) and Money Line (-143) over the Blues
  • Golden Knights Money Line (-200) over the Sharks
  • Avalanche Money Line (-360) over the Kings
  • Kings Puck Line (+1.5, +123) over the Avalanche

Keep an eye out for Starting Goalies tonight. And also keep an eye out for players resting and playoff implications for these games. The Avs need to win out to get the top seed and the Kings have literally nothing to play for. The Oilers and Canadiens both have their seeding locked in, but Edmonton getting more points can give them an advantageous matchup if they make it out of their division.

My Picks

Senators/Maple Leafs Under 6.5 (-110): These teams have actually hit their overs against each other a decent amount going 5-3. However both teams have good under trends throughout the season and in the last month. Both teams are under 40% over win percentage in the last month and under 41% for the whole season. It is Andersen’s first NHL start in a couple months which slightly scares me, but he also might play well given he needs to earn his playoff spot. At that 6.5 number I like the under here.

NHL Betting Picks Monday 5/3

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Betting Picks Monday 5/3. The Model took a break yesterday as there was only 1 game played with the Lightning beating the Red Wings 2-1. No value considering the Lightning were around a -300 favorite after losing to the Red Wings on Friday. The good news in the NHL blessed us with a monster Monday slate of games.

We have 14 games on the NHL slate tonight. Let’s take a look at the updated profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

Dashboard 1

To interact with the dashboard click here.

Dashboard Edges

  • Capitals Money Line (-115) over the Rangers
  • Rangers Puck Line (+1.5, -250) over the Capitals
  • Maple Leafs Money Line (-159) over the Canadiens
  • Predators Money Line (-182) over the Blue Jackets
  • Hurricanes Money Line (-240) over the Blackhawks
  • Penguins Money Line (-175) over the Flyers
  • Islanders Puck Line (-1.5, +106) and Money Line (-245) over the Sabres
  • Bruins Money Line (-240) over the Devils
  • Panthers Money Line (-129) over the Stars
  • Ducks Puck Line (+1.5, -121) over the Blues
  • Golden Knights/Wild Over (5.5, -112)
  • Oilers Puck Line (-1.5, +123) over the Canucks
  • Oilers/Canucks Under (5.5, +104)
  • Avalanches Money Line (-265) over the Sharks

Keep an eye out for Starting Goalies tonight.

My Picks

Senators/Jets Over 5.5 (-130): These two teams both have pretty sub-par defenses. The Sens give up 3.47 goals/game while the Jets allow 2.86. The good news is we are getting the Jets backup goalie Brossoit tonight, which is huge considering Hellebuyck is one of the best goalies in the league. The over is 4-3 in 7 matchups this season and both teams slightly rested with below averages goaltenders in net makes me love this over.

Kings/Coyotes Over 5.5 (+115): We are back on the plus money over. This one on the surface might seem like a stretch but the underlying numbers are there for us. Both teams are over 50% in their over win percentage this season. The Coyotes average 5.5 goals/game and the Kings are slightly below them at 5.65. They are 3-3 on the over this season in 6 matchups so seems like a coin flip, maybe even a little favorable for the over. So the plus money is what puts this play in range today.

Oilers -1.5 (+128): The Canucks looked like they had some life after coming off COVID and winning 2 straight against the Maple Leafs. They have gone 1-5 since and have not looked particularly good. The Oilers are 5-2 in their last 7 games and have been a very good -1.5 team this season (47% top 5 in the NHL). The Canucks are below average on +1.5 and with McDavid and Draisaitl rolling we like this play with the plus money tonight.

Penguins -1 (-112): The Flyers season is over and Carter Hart is done for the year, not that he has been good. The Penguins are fighting to get that top spot in the East and have been playing well even without Malkin. Since we have a monster slate I felt a need to find a 4th play and this one seems like a very solid play for good value. Teams trending in the opposite directions, look for Pittsburgh to run over their state rival.

NHL Betting Picks Saturday 5/1

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Betting Picks Saturday 5/1. The Model went 0-2 last night. It happens, there were only 4 games on the slate. The Jets were up 2-0 and 3-1 before ultimately losing 5-3. They had the game and just collapsed down the stretch. The over in the Knights/Yotes never stood a chance with Vegas getting shutout by Arizona. Quite a surprise for one of the best scoring teams in the league. But that is hockey sometimes, the good value doesn’t always play out. On to Saturday and the biggest slate of the year.

We have 15 (!!) games on the NHL slate tonight. Let’s take a look at the updated profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

Dashboard 1

To interact with the dashboard click here.

Dashboard Edges

  • Bruins Puck Line (-1.5, -136) and Money Line (-335) over the Sabres
  • Senators Money Line (+160) over the Canadiens
  • Rangers Puck Line (+1.5, -225) over the Islanders
  • Rangers/Islanders Under (5.5, -134)
  • Flyers/Devils Over (6.5, +102)
  • Hurricanes Puck Line (-1.5, -125) and Money Line (-335) over the Blue Jackets
  • Avalanche Money Line (-295) over the Sharks
  • Panthers Money Line (-157) over the Blackhawks
  • Predators Money Line (-115) over the Stars
  • Wild Puck Line (-1.5, +180) over the Blues
  • Oilers Money Line (-124) over the Flames
  • Oilers/Flames Under (6, -114)
  • Kings Money Line (-129) over the Ducks
  • Golden Knights Money Line (-200) over the Coyotes

Keep an eye out for Starting Goalies tonight.

My Picks

Senators ML (+160): The Senators have had the Canadiens number this season for whatever reason winning 5 of 8 meetings. The Canadiens played last night against Winnipeg (bad rest spot) and might look to Primeau in net tonight. The Habs are also likely without Shea Weber. The Sens are also profitable on the ML this season (+1.4u) and the Canadiens are not profitable (-9.6u). This is a good value play on a big slate tonight where there isn’t too much value.

Wild -1.5 (+180): The Wild are due to beat the Blues on the puck line. They haven’t their last two meetings which means third time is a charm. We are getting better value each game (+160 first game, +170 last game). I didn’t take it the second game but now that it didn’t hit then I love it even more. Same logic as the previous article, with even more value. They played well in both games just got themselves in a hole early. If they avoid that they should roll tonight.

Golden Knights -1.5 (+132): Vegas finally lost a game with Arizona snapping their 11 game winning streak last night. All good things must come to an end. The good news is the market has over-adjusted too much for that and I see some good value on Vegas puck line tonight. Vegas is one of the best -1.5 teams in the league and the Yotes are one of the worst +1.5 teams in the league. At plus money we are riding this one tonight.

NHL Betting Picks Monday 4/19

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Betting Picks Monday 4/19. The Model had a 1-2 night on games that had no business playing out the way they did. An early Bruins win over the Caps had me feeling good. But then Pittsburgh decided to lose their first game in 9 (!!) years on the road against Buffalo in regulation. That was a shocker to say the least. Then an even bigger shock was the Maple Leafs losing to a Vancouver team who basically got destroyed by COVID. The biggest favorite to lose in the last 20 years. So that was how the night went. Fun stuff. It’s Monday though so we are on to a new week.

We have 8 games on the NHL slate tonight. Let’s take a look at the updated profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

Dashboard 1

To interact with the dashboard click here.

Dashboard Edges

  • Hurricanes Money Line (+102) over the Lightning
  • Panthers Puck Line (-1.5, +107) and Money Line (-220) over the Blue Jackets
  • Red Wings Money Line (+195) over the Stars
  • Wild Puck Line (-1.5, +160) and Money Line (-155) over the Coyotes
  • Wild/Coyotes Over (5.5, +108)
  • Senators Puck Line (+1.5, -141) over the Flames
  • Oilers Money Line (-124) over the Canadiens
  • Golden Knights Money Line (-245) over the Sharks

Keep an eye out for Starting Goalies tonight.

My Picks

Wild/Coyotes Over 5.5 (+120): I am actually shocked how this over is +120. These teams are 3-3 in their 6 matchups on the over this season. The Wild have been scoring/letting up goals in bunches lately. Both teams are over 50% on hitting their overs this season (ARI 57%, MIN 53%), both teams have even better number on their home/away numbers for this particular matchup. This is great value and we are riding with that tonight.

Senators ML (+185): On paper Calgary should be a significantly better team than Ottawa, however that doesn’t seem to be the case. Both teams were sellers at the deadline and are basically out of playoff contention. The Sens have some fight and The Model prices them around +170. The Sens have won 5 of 7 meetings this season and at this price it’s good enough for us to ride.

Blue Jackets +1.5 (-125): Going pretty underdog heavy today. The Blue Jackets were also sellers at the deadline while the Panthers were buyers. They also just had a huge win on Saturday against Tampa and have been rolling. We have the best possible goalie matchup here (Elvis vs Bob), and I can even see an outright upset. However we are going to play this one safe and take the +1.5 line. The Panthers are 11-18 on the puckline as favorites this season and can see a Columbus cover tonight.
