Top Three Lines

Pittsburgh One – Evgeni Malkin, Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust

The Penguins get the hottest ticket right now in the NHL as the will dance with the flailing Detroit Red Wings. They come in a -210 road favorite and despite whatever efforts from the Dylan Larkin line to hard match, I think that you just roll with the top line and not try to overthink it. The talent level is just so much higher than on the second. Bryan Rust is back so that provides the top line a huge boost as he will be back to help deflect pucks in the net and impede the opposing goalie’s vision. Despite a slow night last night while grinding out a 1-0 win, this should be a good spot for the Pens to “knock off the Rust” and get their goal scoring juices flowing.

Nashville One – Matt Duchene, Filip Forsberg, Ryan Johansen

After keeping their best skaters scattered throughout the three lines most of the season, the Predators finally have a line that can be considered to be “Nashville hot”. They also get a matchup in their intimidating home venue with the Devils, who will fly to Tennessee on the second night of a back to back following an overtime loss at home to the Blackhawks last night. I can already hear the country music in between goals blaring. Matt Duchene is dirt cheap on DraftKings, as they have been accustomed to him playing on lower lines. Nashville is a heavy -220 favorite and the key defensemen like Roman Josi and Ryan Ellis are in a good spot here as well. Both of the two aforementioned defensemen are cheap on Fanduel in particular. If looking for a value line from Nashville, the third line, featuring Nick Bonino, Craig Smith, and Rocco Grimaldi, is the best option.

Tampa Bay One – Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Ondrej Palat

Moving on, we have tonight’s likely chalk, the beasts of the southeast, Nikita Kucherov’s Tampa Bay Lightning. Tampa will play host to the San Jose Sharks in what should be a high flying matchup. The Sharks come in following a loss to the Hurricanes the other night in the first game of their east coast road trip. The Sharks depth lines are no match for Tampa Bay. As a -190 favorite and with the highest projected total, Lightning is about to strike. The core plays are Kucherov and Brayden Point, but feel free to mix in Ondrej Palat for savings and full line correlation.

Nikita Kucherov – Over 0.5 Assists Between even strength and the power play, I like Kuch’s chances of grabbing an apple here.

Roman Josi – Over 0.5 Assists Roman Josi is another player in a good spot to grab an assist, as I expect multiple Predator goals.

Top Three Lines

Washington Two – Jacob Vrana, T.J. Oshie, Lars Eller

With the Ryan Getzlaf line likely hard matching the Washington top line on the road, we can get some savings with the second line. The Capitals come in a -145 road favorite and this line has been extremely productive. Jacob Vrana, in particular, has been going off lately so it makes sense to continue to ride him while he is still on a heater. T.J. Oshie would be my second piece in after Vrana, between his top power-play spot and overall game. Lars Eller has not been quite as productive as the other two but he is cheap and does see time on the second power play.

Edmonton One – Connor McDavid, Josh Archibald, James Neal

The Oilers have decided it makes sense to try to spread the wealth. After combining both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the same line for most of the season, now they are split up. It was the Draisaitl line that was better in what was a disappointing night for Edmonton on Wednesday Night. However, I would turn to this line with James Neal the second man is behind McDavid with their additional correlation on the first power-play unit. This is where Neal has scored most of his goals, as opposed to during even strength. As for Josh Archibald, he receives a temporary boost in value but is not necessary.

Pittsburgh One – Evgeni Malkin, Jake Guentzel, Dominik Simon

The Devils have a decent total but they are hard to trust and it is difficult to speculate exactly what the lines might be when they take the ice given the fluidity with a new coach. Last game, we saw Taylor Hall demoted to the third line. This line, by contrast, is predictable and has been extremely effective. The weakest link Dominik Simon was unfortunate not to score a pair of goals in the last game on a couple of his high danger chances. He is the salary saver and allows us to go up to Evgeni Malkin and Jake Guentzel who both cost less than equivalent stars from Edmonton or Washington.

Top Three Lines

Boston One – David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, David Krejci

Oh man, this one might get ugly. Patrice Bergeron has already been ruled out for this home matchup with the Blackhawks. However, do they really need him? Boston comes in with a 3.56 implied total and this is where I would go for cash games. Tampa Bay has a higher implied total but the Minnesota Wild has been playing much better all-around hockey as of late. This Chicago team continues to be a disaster on the road, so let’s exploit it.

Tampa Bay One – Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Ondrej Palat

Tampa Bay has a slate high 3.88 goal total and much like Boston should be extremely popular in formats. Amalie Arena doesn’t host any golf events but Nikita Kucherov has everyone in the stands yelling, “Kuchhhh” once again. He enters this game off a very strong week and would be the one-off play if only looking to roster one Lightning player. Brayden Point continues to remain too cheap on both sites given his important role as Kucherov’s main partner. I would focus on those two with Ondrej Palat added on in situations you can afford to just run the full stack without sacrificing elsewhere. However, he is not a priority.

Carolina Two – Andrei Svechnikov, Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen, Dougie Hamilton “Add-On for Power Play Stack”

Carolina has not made the list in at least a week or two but I like their home matchup with the Sharks. The Sharks have been playing well as of late but a lot of those games have been on home ice. They travel to Raleigh where the Hurricanes have a 3.63 total and will be able to exploit matchups to allow this second line some additional upside. If you want to go all-in here, make sure to add Dougie Hamilton. Hamilton has slowed down a bit since his torrid start but can still teach the Sharks how to Dougie.

12/5 NHL DraftKings Rankings

DraftKings Forwards/Centers

  1. David Pastrnak – Boston Bruins – $8,400
  2. Nikita Kucherov – Tampa Bay Lightning – $7,400
  3. Nathan McKinnon – Colorado Avalanche – $8,500

  1. Cale Makar – Colorado Avalanche – $5,900
  2. Dougie Hamilton – Carolina Hurricanes – $7,000
  3. Roman Polak – Dallas Stars – $3,300

NHL DraftKings Goalies

  1. Tuukka Rask – Boston Bruins – $8,400
  2. Andrei Vasilevsky – Tampa Bay Lightning – $8,300

Top Three Lines

Edmonton One – Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Zach Kassian

Considering that this is only a four-game slate, we have some of the NHL’s biggest lines in play. The best matchup of the night goes to the Edmonton Oilers, who will face the Ottawa Senators on the second half of a back to back, on home ice. Edmonton is a slate high -215 favorite with a 3.88 projected goal total. Since this is a one-line team it is not hard to guess where the majority of that total would come from. I would try to jam in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in cash games and prioritize them there over the man listed in the writeup just below.

Colorado One – Nathan MacKinnon, Joonas Donskoi, Mikko Rantanen

This game should have plenty of goals to go around. Toronto has a higher implied goal total at 3.44 and will be on home ice. However, rather than play the Toronto guessing game/carousel, I would much prefer to look across the ice to the Avalanche. You might have heard of this Nathan MacKinnon guy. Turns out, he’s pretty good at hockey. Now he has his best friend Mikko Rantanen back and they are ready to resume tearing things up. This is my second favorite line of the night and the primary tournament pivot from Edmonton One.

Washington One – Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, John Carlson “Add-On”

Washington gets another soft matchup on road ice against the Kings. Mostly everything I said about them yesterday still applies here. The Caps have a healthy 3.44 projected goal total and should be able to take advantage of the Kings. Both lines are in play but if you can afford the top line, they are the preference. As crazy as it is, I think they go under-owned here with more exciting options on this slate such as the lines listed above. However, clearly the Capitals nearly always have a lot of upsides, especially on a four-game slate. Washington’s 3.44 implied goal total is not worlds apart from Edmonton’s 3.88.

Top Three Lines

Boston One – David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, David Krejci

The expectation as of now is that Patrice Bergeron will miss out. However, what is left is still enough for me, as well as for the oddsmakers in Las Vegas who have anointed the Bruins a -150 home favorite. Boston One, even with only two of their three rock stars performing, is a line that at this point needs no further introduction. Pasta is the cash game priority with his eye-popping 25 goals and 17 assists across 27 games. Most cash lines should involve some combination of Boston and Vancouver.

Vancouver One – Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, J.T. Miller

The Canucks reunited top line should roll here in a cozy home matchup with the Ottawa Senators. Vancouver is a healthy – 170 favorite and despite some tough matchups recently should be able to bounce back here. I think this is one of the top ten lines overall in the NHL and one with an upside for growth due to the youth of its two studs. Both of them are averaging about a point per game and should be able to have one of their bigger outings here. I expect them to be very popular on all sites, in all formats.

Washington One – Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, John Carlson “Add-On”

Washington will be headed to the west coast which is normally not a good thing for an east coast team. However, they will get an up-tempo matchup with the defensively deficient San Jose Sharks. This one has all the makings of a shootout and I want exposure to both Washington lines here. However, the priority would be the top line, where you can neatly fit them with salary, which tends to be the issue with rostering Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson. Washington comes in a -120 road favorite and this game is tied for the highest total of the night. Ovi sees Sharks, Ovi smash Sharks.

12/3 NHL DraftKings Rankings

DraftKings Forwards/Centers

  1. David Pastrnak – Boston Bruins – $8,500
  2. Alex Ovechkin – Washington Capitals – $8,700
  3. Elias Pettersson – Vancouver Canucks – $6,300 “Extremely cheap”

  1. John Carlson – Washington Capitals – $7,500
  2. Quinn Hughes – Vancouver Canucks – $4,300
  3. Shea Theodore – Las Vegas Golden Knights – $4,500

NHL DraftKings Goalies

  1. Anton Khudobin – Dallas Stars – $7,500
  2. Chris Driedger – Florida Panthers – $8,100

12/3 NHL FanDuel Rankings

FanDuel Forwards/Centers

  1. David Pastrnak – Boston Bruins – $9,400
  2. Alex Ovechkin – Washington Capitals – $9,000
  3. Elias Pettersson – Vancouver Canucks – $7,400

  1. Nate Schmidt – Las Vegas Golden Knights – $4,600
  2. Ryan Pulock – New York Islanders – $4,400
  3. Jacob Chychrun – Arizona Coyotes – $3,700

  1. Thatcher Demko – Vancouver Canucks – $7,200

David Pastrnak – Over 5.5 Fantasy Points Unfortunately, neither Alex Ovechkin or John Carlson are options for the Capitals on tonight’s Monkey Knife Fight. So hello once again old friend. Not a bad option to fall back on.

Max Pacioretty +0.5 over Taylor Hall – Points Demoted to the Devils third line last game, Taylor Hall is on the outs. Meanwhile, Max Pacioretty continues to feast on a nightly basis and has been reunited with his partner in crime Mark Stone. The 0.5 start is just an added bonus.

Top Five Lines

Buffalo One – Jack Eichel, Sam Reinhart, Victor Olofsson

Buffalo is your clear chalk of the night and at minimum, Jack Eichel should be in all of your cash games. Eichel should carry the highest ownership of any individual skater on either site by a wide margin. Alongside Eichel, we have a pair of skaters in Sam Reinhart and Victor Olofson who are affordable on both sites, and also share correlation on the Sabres’ first power-play unit. If looking to expand, we will have to see the status of Rasmus Dahlin who experienced a concussion last week. In case Dahlin does not return, in the interim, Rasmus Ristolainen is the beneficiary. Ristolainen is currently skating with the first line and quarterbacking the power play one. If mass entering, this line along with some correlation with either Dahlin or Ristolainen should be a core line to work off of.

New York Islanders One – Brock Nelson, Anthony Beauvillier, Jordan Eberle

New York Islanders Two – Mathew Barzal, Anders Lee, Josh Bailey

Though Detroit normally likes to hard match the first line against the first line, I think they will switch and utilize the Dylan Larkin line to neutralize the Islanders’ second line with Mathew Barzal. That should create an opportunity for this very affordable stack which we can use to fit higher-end stacks such as Buffalo, one of the Rangers or Vegas lines, etc. Jordan Eberle has not done a lot over the last month, but his new linemates should be able to elevate his play. As for the matchup, it is the Red Wings depth lines. So in other words, as good as it gets on road ice. The Barzal line is a strong play as well because even if they match up with Detroit’s best defensive line, that doesn’t say much. The Islanders are a slate high -205 favorite.

New York Rangers Two – Artemi Panarin, Ryan Strome, Kappo Kakko

New York Rangers One – Mika Zibanejad, Pavel Buchnevich, Brendan Lemieux

The Rangers are home underdogs to the visiting Las Vegas Golden Knights. However, good things tend to happen to them in the Garden and this line has a lot of skill for a fair price. On DraftKings, both Ryan Strome and Kappo Kakko seem extremely cheap. If you were looking for further value, the Rangers top line is dirt cheap outside of Mika Zibanejad and can be used to fit any other line on the slate. I just think that this line has the most balancedd between the Rangers’ top two lines. This should be a sneaky shootout, assisted by the likely continued absence of Marc Andre-Fleury for the Golden Knights.

Honorable Mention: Las Vegas One and Two

12/2 NHL DraftKings Rankings

Top Expensive Line

Boston One – David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, David Krejci

Even on a larger slate, but particularly on a two-game slate, this isn’t a very bold call. Patrice Bergeron has been ruled out in advance of this game. Brad Marchand is also dealing with flu-like symptoms that he was able to play through the other night. Marchand will likely be a GTD for Sunday, so be sure to watch for any updates on his status. The Bruins get a rematch with a Canadiens team that they absolutely slaughtered 8-1 last week. That score pretty much speaks for itself. As long as Pasta is still in there, Boston One should definitely be in your cash lines and it is really hard to make a lineup in any format without them.

Top Value Line

Vancouver One – Nikolay Goldobin, Bo Horvat, J.T. Miller

Making their first appearance ever, we have the newly formed Vancouver One. This line definitely plays second fiddle for the Canucks but serves an important purpose as they allow us to fit Boston One in our lines. Since coming to Vancouver, J.T. Miller has been lighting it up with 26 points in 26 games. Bo Horvat isn’t far behind with 20 points in 26 games this season. Nikolay Golobin has been cruising in the minors and comes in near minimum price at only $2,600 on DraftKings and $3,200 on FanDuel. Both Vancouver One and Vancouver Two should be able to face the Edmonton depth lines as often as possible on home ice. As of the time of writing, the first set of their back to back in Edmonton has yet to start but I am hoping this line goes not go off one day early.

This article focuses on NHL DFS Picks for 11/30 on DraftKings and FanDuel. Both sites have fairly different scoring formats, particularly with the recent changes on DraftKings. We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so we can gain an edge on the field at large. BE SURE to double-check both regular and power play lines at both morning skate and before lock as they can drastically change from the time of publication.

Top Four Lines

Washington One – Alex Ovechkin “Core”, Evgeny Kuznetsov “Core”, John Carlson “Core”, Tom Wilson

Washington Two – Lars Eller, Jacob Vrana, T.J. Oshie

The Detroit Red Wings have been nothing short of a disaster and an every night target at this point. Fresh off getting destroyed by the Flyers last night, they will play host to the Capitals. I plan on having all sorts of Capitals combinations and exposure to both lines. This is a clear mismatch. I will pair the top line with other cheaper lines and the second line with more expensive lines from other teams. Much like with Philly last night, I think it’s best to utilize the capture method. The Caps are not surprisingly a slate high -220 favorite and it is hard to imagine them not having their way here.

Tampa Bay One – Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Ondrej Palat

After a slow start, there has been some serious regression to the mean for Nikita Kucherov and company. They narrowly lost last night in overtime to a fierce Washington team. That was no fault of these lines, however, as Kucherov had three assists and Brayden Point scored a goal and an assist. They should be able to bounce back on home ice against the Hurricanes. Considering they were only 5% owned last night, people are still not owning this line as much as they should. Last year there was nary a slate that they weren’t giant chalk.

Calgary One – Johnny Gaudreau, Elias Lindholm, Sean Monahan, Mark Giordano

I don’t know if I have used this line since the beginning of the season. However, maybe this is the time to whip them out in tournaments. They will face an Ottawa team that is generally much better on home ice under the tutelage of a new coach. I’m not big on narratives but I’d willing to suggest the coaching needed to get switched up just based on the team’s performance issues alone. They come in a heavy -200 favorite considering just how bad they have been at times. It’s possible they let everyone down once again but I’d rather be a day too early, then a day too late.

Top Four Lines

Philadelphia One – Morgan Frost, Claude Giroux, Travis Konecny

Philadelphia Two – Sean Couturier, Jacob Voracek, Oskar Lindblom

This is a big slate so I do not think that anything will be considered chalk. However, the Philadelphia Flyers come in the heaviest favorite at -230, mainly because of their opponent, the lowly Detroit Red Wings. The Flyers’ top line has been jelling quickly since Morgan Frost’s promotion to the NHL and does not break the bank either. Frost remains only $4,300 on FanDuel which helps to offset the cost of the other two skaters. Morgan Frost gets a price bump on DraftKings but it is offset by how cheap his linemates become. The Philadelphia second line is affordable on both sites, particularly DraftKings and consists of three solid skaters. Both the first and second lines all share full power play correlation as well.

Toronto One – Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Andreas Johnsson, Tyson Barrie “Add-On”, Jake Muzzin “Add-On”

Let’s go back to the well. While both William Nylander and Andreas Johnsson ate the other night in Detroit, Auston Matthews was silent. I wouldn’t expect that to happen again. As of the time of writing, the Leafs have the slates highest projected total, as they continue to roll under new coach Sheldon Keefe. Tyson Barrie has absolutely been en Fuego as of late so I don’t mind adding him, given the power play correlation that Barrie has with both Matthews and Nylander on the first power-play unit. If looking for savings we can go back to Jake Muzzin. Muzzin disappointed while other Maple Leafs didn’t the other night, but he is relatively cheap, shares time on the second line, and sees some power play time.

Pittsburgh One – Evgeni Malkin, Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust

Pittsburgh One crushed once again at super low ownership on Wednesday’s giant slate. They sent a resounding message that despite the absence of that Crosby guy, the Penguins are still a force to be reckoned with. While the current second line might have its moments, these three are the Penguin’s rock stars. The Pens are only a slight favorite in Columbus, but I think that they absolutely smash them. Let’s not allow their reminder not to fade them the other night be forgotten too quickly. All three members of this line have been eating so I like the full line. Given Bryan Rust’s criminal price of $4,800 on FanDuel, he should be in almost every lineup you make there.

11/29 NHL DraftKings Rankings

DraftKings Forwards/Centers

  1. Sean Couturier – Philadelphia Flyers – $5,900
  2. Nathan McKinnon – Colorado Avalanche – $8,500
  3. Alex Ovechkin – Washington Capitals – $8,000

NHL DraftKings Defenders

  1. John Carlson – Washington Capitals – $7,800
  2. Shea Theodore – Las Vegas Golden Knights – $4,400
  3. Tyson Barrie – Toronto Maple Leafs – $5,300

NHL DraftKings Goalies

  1. Connor Hellebuyck – Winnipeg Jets – $7,100
  2. Carter Hart – Philadelphia Flyers – $8,200

11/29 NHL FanDuel Rankings

FanDuel Forwards/Centers

  1. Bryan Rust – Pittsburgh Penguins – $4,800
  2. Nathan McKinnon – Colorado Avalanche – $8,900
  3. William Nylander – Toronto Maple Leafs – $5,600

FanDuel Defensemen

  1. John Carlson – Washington Capitals – $7,400
  2. Cale Makar – Colorado Avalanche – $5,400
  3. Morgan Rielly – Toronto Maple Leafs – $5,200

  1. Carter Hart – Philadelphia Flyers – $7,400

David Pastrnak – Over 5.5 Fantasy Points If you’re looking for a little early action, we can turn to our old friend. The Bruins had one down game, so it is back down to 5.5 Fantasy Points needed once again. Needless to say, things likely won’t work out well for the Rangers in Boston.

John Carlson – Over 4.5 Fantasy Points Since we don’t have to pay his outrageous DFS salary on MKF, let’s load up on John Carlson, who gives us a safe bet.

Top Two Plays

Carey Price – Montreal Canadiens – DraftKings

Because Carey Price is the same cost as a skater, I think that this is where you start in the DraftKings showdown format when searching for your captain. On FanDuel, by contrast, picking a goalie is not an option. Price has been struggling as of late, but this seems like the type of spot where he bounces back. The Devils have been dreadful on the road and the Canadiens fans in the crowd should be rowdy, as they will not be tired from a big Thanksgiving dinner. Despite his recent issues, Price still has a .900 GAA.

Brendan Gallagher – Montreal Canadiens – FanDuel

We do not get penalized for choosing a higher salary player in our captain slot here, so it makes sense to look to the expensive end for our selection. I like Brendan Gallagher, who fired eight shots on goal Tuesday night despite the big loss against Boston. That type of volume will likely be rewarded here as the Devils are not exactly the Bruins. The Canadiens are projected for 3.66 goals as compared to the Devils 2.84 so it makes sense to pull more from their side of this matchup. With the bonuses on DraftKings, on that site specifically, I would likely reverse the order on FanDuel below and rank Shea Weber over Gallagher.

11/28 NHL DraftKings Rankings

DraftKings Showdown Plays

  1. Carey Price – Montreal Canadiens – $10,600
  2. Shea Weber – Montreal Canadiens – $9,800
  3. Brendan Gallagher – Montreal Canadiens – $9,600
  4. Tomas Tatar – Montreal Canadiens – $8,800
  5. Jeff Petry – Montreal Canadiens – $7,400

11/28 NHL FanDuel Rankings

FanDuel Showdown Plays

  1. Brendan Gallagher – Montreal Canadiens – $14,500
  2. Shea Weber – Montreal Canadiens – $12,500
  3. Tomas Tatar – Montreal Canadiens – $11,500
  4. Jeff Petry – Montreal Canadiens – $8,000
  5. Max Domi – Montreal Canadiens – $14,000

Shea Weber +0.5 > Andy Greene- Shots on Goal plus Blocks – Shea Weber should be very chalky tonight in all formats. I like him versus New Jersey’s old dog Andy Greene who doesn’t offer anything near the offensive presence that Weber does. The fact that Weber gets a 0.5 head start makes it unfair.

Brendan Gallagher – Over 3.5 Fantasy Points I wrote extensively about Brendan Gallagher above and 3.5 Fantasy Points is a low standard, as Monkey Knife Fight thresholds go.
