Welcome to Zak’s Puck Picks!! I started in Cash with Flash Handicapping Challenge and have been heating up. I am super excited to keep the momentum going and win some serious money with all of you!

A big part of my life is my 3 kids. Each one of them holds a different attribute that I would personally use to aid me in deciding what picks to make. My twins Pork and Ribs and their little brother Bean (not their real names but very appropriate nicknames).

Pork is a doer. He is one to dive into a situation and figure it out as it unfolds, usually with great success. In terms of the puck pick, it will be a gut feeling pick and be backed with some stats to explain the feeling.

Ribs, he likes to observe the situation, take in all the information, and then make an educated decision on what his next step will be. His puck pick will be focused around teams that are on hot streaks, either against a team in a matchup or on a winning streak.

Now Bean may sound cute and innocent, but he is a wild man. Not a lot of thought goes into actions and if there is some thought, its geared towards “how can I push Dad’s buttons”. His puck pick will be a little more on the risky side. There will be reasons why I think we should go this way.

As cook by trade and hockey as a passion since I was 3 years old, let’s get some puck picks in the oven and make some dough shall we?

All odds are referenced from vegasinsider.com. I will play ALL the picks mentioned in these articles.

Puck Record for February (7-2) last night (3-2).

Some fantastic hockey last night! If you didn’t have the pleasure of watching the 3rd installment of the battle of Alberta last night, I suggest you at least find the highlights. We were spoiled!

These are afternoon games so you can watch these as you get ready for the Super Bowl! Get your bets in early!!!

Pork’s Puck Pick- Washington-132

Pittsburgh has not played very well since before the All-Star break. They came away with a win against the Flyers the other night but did not look strong in the process. Washington has looked like the force to be reckoned with in the east and with a puck stopper with 10 straight wins backing them up, I feel comfortable taking them for the home win. Ilya Samsonov and his ridiculously low 2.12 GAA according to Newsday sports and 16-2-1 record, plus Ovechkin seemingly passing another all-time great on the scoring list daily, will propel the capital’s past the Penguins in this game.

Rib’s Puck Pick- Carolina -148

This game comes down to the fact that the Canes are better rested. This will be Vancouver’s 3rd game in 4 nights and they took the New York Islanders to overtime last night. I think the more rested and more talented puck scorers will pull out the victory here this afternoon.

Bean’s Puck Pick – Columbus +115

This game comes down to, you guessed it, puck stopping. I haven’t seen a confirmation yet, however, if Charlie Lindgren does start as projected, I like the Blue Jackets to take this one. This year Lindgren has yet to get a victory. Columbus has been playing some great defense and their puck stoppers are fantastic. I think they will have enough firepower to speak out the W here. Watch out for Oliver Bjorkstrand who has 4 goals in as many games. Keep your eyes on discord and twitter for a goalie update here!

There are a few other matchups I may like, however it depends who the puck stopper is. Stay tuned to the #nhl and # sports betting tabs on Discord, as well as Twitter for any changes or more potential matchups as more news unfolds!

This article focuses on NHL DFS Picks for 2/2 on DraftKings and FanDuel. Both sites have fairly different scoring formats, particularly with the recent changes on DraftKings. We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so we can gain an edge on the field at large. BE SURE to double-check both regular and power play lines at both morning skate and before lock as they can drastically change from the time of publication.

Top Two Lines

Washington One – Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, Nicklas Backstrom

Alex Ovechkin is on an absolutely torrid stretch, even for his extremely high career standards. Ovi will easily be the highest owned player in all formats and there is no reason to fade him in cash games on a three-game slate. From there, the decision is how much Washington exposure you want in tournaments. They are a -140 favorite which comes in just under the Carolina Hurricanes, who are -152 favorites in their game against the Canucks. However, the Capitals 3.48 implied goal total is the highest on the slate by nearly half a point. It’s enough to make a difference, but not enough to make them a stone-cold lock. I think if you were to leave anyone out, it would be Nicklas Backstrom. You can use the two-man in tournaments, use an Ovechkin one-off, or fade completely.

Carolina Two – Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen, Ryan Dzingel

In the alternative, you can also use the Washington Capitals second line who remains perpetually cheap on DraftKings. However, assuming you have Alex Ovechkin and some other Washington pieces in hand, it makes sense to get some exposure to the slate’s other major favorite. If you wanted to use Justin Williams as an add on or as a replacement for Ryan Dzingel, it would be okay as a power-play stack of sorts. If that were the case, I would also incorporate Jacob Slavin who does not share even strength time with this line but quarterbacks the first power-play unit. Slavin has stepped into the Dougie Hamilton role at a discount so he should be popular.

2/2 Monkey Knife Fight NHL Prop Picks – Win With These Picks Here and Get 100 Percent Bonus!

Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin – Over 2.5 Points – The daily 2.5 point bet is up to 25/34 behind Pasta’s three-point night and a game-ending assist from Auston Matthews to hit four points on what had started off a very slow night. Unfortunately, the stars shootout is not available on the three-game slate. The best strategy is to take the top three skaters available regardless of team. It leads us to roster two Penguins in a game that Washington is favored to win, but so be it.

As cook by trade and hockey as a passion since I was 3 years old, let’s get some puck picks in the oven and make some dough shall we?

All odds are referenced from vegasinsider.com. I will play ALL the picks mentioned in these articles.

Puck Record for February (4-0) last night (4-0).

Good start to the end of January. The next 30 days (Jan 31- Feb 29) starts off strong. 3 article picks and one on Twitter all hit. Let’s keep this positivity rolling!

Pork’s Puck Pick-. Dallas -141

The Devils have been playing much better hockey as of late. Putting pucks in the net to keep themselves in games. Dallas has been playing great as of late. Their success comes from keeping pucks out of their net. 1st in the league allowing a measly 2.5 goals per game, should easily be enough for Dallas to come up with the victory. Their team defense and goaltending have been superb and will be the Devils undoing this evening.

Rib’s Puck Pick- NY Rangers -115

With both of these teams playing each other last night, and the Rangers coming up with the 4-2 victory, I see a similar narrative playing out tonight. The only difference is tonight’s game is in Detroit. The Rangers still have a better road record (10-11-1-1) than the Wings do a home record (8-16-2-0). Poor Jimmy Howard who appears to be the only starter for Detroit until Bernier comes back from injury has a dismal 2-20-2 record. Take this line early as I am sure it is only going to fade closer to -200 by game time.

Bean’s Puck Pick – Columbus + 109

Buffalo’s struggles are real. It seems as though the only player that is going well here is Jack Eichel who was the third man to reach 30 goals on the season on Thursday night. With the injury to their starting puck stopper Ullmark, I see this team struggling to score more goals than they let in. Columbus also has an injury to their starting puck stopper however Elvis Merzlikins has taken the net and played great! With his 2.39 GAA vs Hutton’s 3.24GAA, I see the Blue Jackets were able to score enough while keeping Buffalo off the board to get the win.

Games to keep an eye on Tampa v SJ, Chi v Ari,

There are a few other matchups I like, however, it depends who the puck stopper is. Stay tuned to the #nhl and # sports betting tabs on Discord, as well as Twitter for any changes or more potential matchups as more news unfolds!

Top Two Lines

New York Rangers Two – Ryan Strome, Artemi Panarin, Jesper Fast

This feels like a repeat of last night’s article but you can re-read everything that I already said regarding the Rangers and the Red Wings. To summarize, Detroit has nearly double as bad a goal differential as the next closest team, their goalies are practically turnstiles, they stink! Not surprisingly, the Rangers dominated the Red Wings last night and get to face them again on the road end of a back to back. Both of the Ranger’s top two lines are in play and I would make sure to have Artemi Panarin in any cash lines. The Breadman had two points last night including a spectacular goal and should be back to work in the point-scoring business tonight. Mika Zibanejad got a lot of ownership last night as well, so a cross line, power play-oriented Rangers build doesn’t seem like a bad idea either.

Toronto One – Auston Matthews, Mitchell Marner, Zach Hyman

This line has been one of the best in the NHL with nine full line goals over their last ten games. Toronto has a high 4.48 implied goal and comes in a heavy -280 favorite tomorrow at home against the Senators. The Sens come in on the second night of a back to back and should have their hands full here. Auston Matthews is the standout play and I would make sure to have both him and Artemi Panarin in any of my cash games. In a large field tournament, you can add the other two skaters but on a slate with so many studs, they are far from priorities in cash games or smaller tournaments.

Honorable Mention for GPPS: Tampa Bay One – Brayden Point, Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov

Puck Record. The month of January #30dayhandicappingchalenge (49-49) article picks (22-25) (2-1 Thursday)

Won one in a shoot out, and lost one in a shootout. So close to a perfect night. Cash with Flash challenge is over. Not the 52% I was hoping for however 50% is a solid benchmark to improve upon! We’ll start a new count in February!

Pork’s Puck Pick- Lightning -167

With Tampa Bay being winners of 7 of their last 10 games and leading in about every statistical category Newsday Sports shows, it should be easy to see what you would make this pick. Anaheim does have a win under their belt in their lone meeting since the all-star break putting 4 pucks past Antti Raanta of the Arizona Coyotes. However, Andrei Vasilevskiy has started to hear his name rumbled on the Vesna conversation, a trophy given out to the league’s best puck stopper at the end of the season. The Lightning and their high-end firepower will just be too much for Anaheim to handle through 60 minutes.

Rib’s Puck Pick- Penguins -159

The Penguins are at home in this contest looking to avenge a 3-0 home loss at the hands of these Flyers back on January 21. Pittsburgh was coming off of a 4 game in 5-night stretch at that point and put in a sub-par performance, only guiding 19 pucks towards the net. This will be both teams’ first game back after the all-star break and as injury-riddled, as both teams are, they should be well-rested. I think Pittsburgh will put forth a much better effort in this game and avenge that home loss to finish off a strong January for them.

Bean’s Puck Pick – Bruins -136

The Winnipeg Jets are a struggling team right now who have lost 7 of their last 10 games. After a much-needed break, things do not get any easier with the Bruins coming to town. Worse than that, there is a good chance it appears by the news at Newsday sports, that Tuukka Rask could make his return from a concussion. The Jets are thin on the back end and are suffering a few injuries to their already thin D core. With Boston’s ability to put the puck in the net, I see this being Winnipeg’s downfall in this contest

My favorite line of the night, the New York Ranger’s second line is a value line with tremendous upside. They get the best matchup that a team can ask for, as they will face the pathetic Detroit Red Wings at home. This line has nine full line goals over their last ten games, which puts them in a three-way tie for 2nd in the NHL during that span, along with Alex Ovechkin’s line and the Colorado top unit. As for the Red Wings, their -90 point differential is nearly double the next closest team, the New Jersey Devils, who are at -46. The Red Wings 199 goals surrendered also leads the NHL by a considerable margin. Bottom line, don’t overthink it.

Washington One – Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, Nicklas Backstrom, Add-On: John Carlson

This reminds me of the other night, as paying up seems like a decision between Washington and Tampa Bay. It’s like deciding between which choice cut of steak to eat. I generally like to use Washington more in cash as they allow for more flexibility in terms of your build and tend to be higher owned, especially Alex Ovechkin. However, I think that Tampa Bay is the proper tournament pivot. Ovi’s line is tied for third in the NHL in terms of goals scored over the last ten games as mentioned above, but the Tampa Bay top line is first during that period with eleven full line goals. Tampa Bay is a -190 favorite, Washington is a -180 favorite, but the Capitals have the slightly higher total as of the time of writing if splitting hairs.

Honorable Mention: Tampa Bay One – Steven Stamkos, Brayden Point, Nikita Kucherov

Alex Ovechkin, Artemi Panarin, David Pastrnak – Over 2.5 Points – The daily 2.5 point bet is up to 23/32 so really rolling as of late. Tonight’s lineup should be illegal. You can also use Nikita Kucherov or Steven Stamkos instead of Pasta but it’s splitting hairs. I will probably make a few combinations.

Top Two Lines

Nashville Two – Filip Forsberg, Kyle Turris, Victor Arvidsson

All three of Nashville’s main lines are in play on this slate, as they come in a -140 road favorite in the highest total game of the night. The top line is in fine form as well with Mikael Granlund adding to his recent scoring streak last night. However, this newly formed second line is the most talented of the three lines and with the savings that Kyle Turris provides, very affordable. Unfortunately, because this line does not have much of sample size, we cannot look at too much data, but ultimately you would hope that the Predators will find a way to continue momentum after a thrilling win against the Washington Capitals last night. Mattias Ekholm would make the most sense as a defenseman pairing with this line, as he shares even-strength time, as well as time on the second power-play unit with two of three skaters. If using the first line, I would definitely pair them with Roman Josi.

Montreal One – Tomas Tatar, Phillip Danault, Ilya Kovalchuk, Add On Shea Weber “Note: Hopefully, Brendan Gallagher is back and if so huge bump”

Given that they are the home team, I think that the Buffalo Sabres will get higher ownership than the visiting Canadiens. It is likely that both Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart are mega chalk once again just like they were the other night on a similarly small slate. However, I want to target Carter Hutton and the Montreal top line is affordable and features three skaters who all possess power playtime. This game is a pick-em with both teams at -110. I would really love it if the Montreal got Brendan Gallagher back. While he is fairly priced at $7,300 on FanDuel, Gallagher is only $6,300 on DraftKings. Either way, Buffalo is on the downswing after losing top goalie Linus Ullmark and it makes sense to target them. As it stands, the current trio has six full line goals and 100 SATF over their last ten games.

1/30 NHL DraftKings Rankings

Forwards

  1. Jack Eichel – Buffalo Sabres – $8,500
  2. Brendan Gallagher – Montreal Canadiens – $6,300
  3. Filip Forsberg – Nashville Predators – $6,700
  4. Sam Reinhart – Buffalo Sabres – $6,600
  5. Blake Coleman – New Jersey Devils – $5,900

  4. Sean Walker – Los Angeles Kings – $3,300
  5. Will Butcher – New Jersey Devils – $2,600

Goalies

  1. Jack Campbell – Los Angeles Kings – $6,900
  2. Adin Hill – Arizona Coyotes – $8,100

  5. Max Domi – Montreal Canadiens – $5,300

Defensemen

  1. Roman Josi – Nashville Predators – $6,600
  2. Shea Weber – Montreal Canadiens – $6,300
  3. Sami Vatanen – New Jersey Devils – $4,500
  4. Jeff Petry – Montreal Canadiens – $4,800

Jack Eichel, Roman Josi, Brendan Gallagher – Over 2.5 Points – The daily 2.5 point bet is up to 22/31 and it didn’t take long to hit it last night. Let’s keep the roll going tonight. I would hold off to see if Brendan Gallagher is in before placing this as he is worth waiting on.

Puck Record. The month of January #30dayhandicappingchalenge (46-46) article picks (19-22) (0-1 Wednesday 2 pending, but going to bed early)

Pork’s Puck Pick- Montreal -103

As I refuse to put any money on Buffalo anymore after that abysmal performance against Ottawa, I am more than happy to pick Montreal on this one. After a hot start. Carter Hutton hasn’t been stellar and has lost the starting net in Buffalo. He has a donut under the win column in his last 10 starts and has recorded a save percentage better than .900 3 times in that span, according to Newsday sports. It appears as though Montreal might be receiving some reinforcements in terms of goal scoring as Brenden Gallagher looks probable to return, as well as Max Domi and Artturi Lehkonen both questionable with an illness. Montreal is 1st in the league in shots per game averaging 34.88. If they continue that style of play, I see this win going in their favor.

Rib’s Puck Pick- Arizona -175

Both of these teams played last night. LA played Tampa Bay, with an emotional and fitting tribute to “the Mamba” Kobe Bryant. Arizona played Anaheim who isn’t quite at the same talent level as Tampa Bay. Arizona has won both games this season by scores of 3-0 at home and 3-2 in LA. With Arizona back at home tonight, I like them to beat LA.

Bean’s Puck Pick – Nashville -152

A triumphant win over Washington after getting badly outshot seems like a similar narrative to what might happen tonight. The Devils are coming off a 52 shot gutsy win against Ottawa, but Nashville is much better defensively than Ottawa. Full disclosure here, The Devils are who I cheer for. I also have won quite a bit of money betting against them. The stats that lead me to believe Nashville will win this game is goals per game (NSH 7th vs NJ 26th) and goals against (NSH 24th vs NJ 30th). Nashville has won 4 of the last 5 meetings.

There are a few other matchups I like, however, it depends who the puck stopper is. Stay tuned to the #nhl and # sports betting tabs on Discord, as well as Twitter for any changes or more potential matchups as more news unfolds!

Puck Record. The month of January #30dayhandicappingchalenge (46-45) article picks (19-21) (0-2 Tuesday (one game pending but I’m sick and going to bed))

Pork’s Puck Pick- Arizona -112

Arizona is just the better team here. If I had faith picking the Sharks with their trouble scoring goals and stopping the puck against Anaheim, I have more faith in Arizona. After losing his last 2 starts, I believe Antti Raanta returns to his winning ways after mending his injuries during the all-star break. John Gibson has lost 4 of his last 5 starts, although I don’t think many are blaming him. I am actually surprised this line is as high as it is. Anaheim does have a respectable 11-9-3 home record, however, with Arizona sitting in 4 in the Pacific Division, they need wins and have to beat teams they should beat. This is one of those games.

Rib’s Puck Pick- Washington-162

Nashville is struggling right now. They are a team full of talent, that just doesn’t seem to gel right. Washington is coming off a victory in Montreal. Holtby looked like he had found his Grove again and is slated to start this game. They also get their leading puck slapper back in Alexander Ovechkin, after serving his slap on the wrist for abandoning the all-star festivities. Nashville has actually won the last 8 meetings between these clubs. But I see that trend ending tonight.

Bean’s Puck Pick – Vancouver+107

Vancouver has been playing some great hockey as of late. Markstrom has been especially good puck stopping his way to 8 wins in his last 10 games. Martin Jones has done the exact opposite winning 2 of his last 10 starts. Vancouver put out a real balanced attacking effort with a 3-1 win on Monday night against the Blues, who in my opinion are a much better team than the Sharks. As I said earlier the Sharks have had trouble with goaltending and goal-scoring consistency, where Vancouver holds a 10th ranked offense and 14th in goals against per game. Vancouver is just too deep and to balanced to let this one slip

This article focuses on NHL DFS Picks for 1/29 on DraftKings and FanDuel.

Top Expensive Line

Washington One – Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Tom Wilson

I wanted to avoid writing them up if possible and I do think that the Tampa Bay Lightning present another high-end pivot. I think the issue with the Tampa Bay top line is that they are so expensive they lock you into certain builds. Washington’s top line, by contrast, allows you a lot of flexibility in terms of salary.

Alex Ovechkin spent his week off in Mexico and should be well-rested and ready to rock. He will look to resume his absurd hot streak which included eight goals in the three games leading up to the break. In cash games, I don’t think you need all three skaters, just Ovi. However, the other two skaters are very affordable on both sites, so they naturally make for fine plays paired with the great eight. Washington has a 3.59 implied goal total and should be able to win this game at home.

Auston Matthews, Roman Josi, John Carlson – Over 2.5 Points – The daily 2.5 point bet is up to 21/30 as the Calgary/St. Louis game ended up to be a shootout. Unfortunately, Ovi, Nikita Kucherov, and Connor McDavid are not options. They have trimmed it down to a twenty man pool. I think these three make the most sense out of what remains.
