NHL

Almost a week into the NHL season, and it has been a fun ride already. Between MLB playoffs, the NFL, and now hockey, October is one of the best months for sports fans. The NHL slates so far have been manageable, and tonight is no different, with a nice five game slate. All games start at 7pm Eastern. Let’s dive into the best NHL DFS plays for tonight. Good luck!

Goalies

Joseph Woll – Toronto Maple Leafs: The Leafs host Chicago tonight, and this is your ‘safe’ goalie pick. Woll is a candidate for cash and single entry lineups. He should pull a win, but the shot volume may not be there for deeper GPP.

Vitek Vanecek – New Jersey Devils: This is a nice looking pick tonight, as the Devils host the Panthers. Florida should fire a bunch of shots toward Vanecek tonight, giving him a good look at some upside. Florida has also been struggling to score, so a win is not out of the question.

High Risk Goalie Pick – Petr Mrazek – Chicago Blackhawks: This is the ultimate leverage play tonight. The Leafs will fire a ton of shots at Mrazek tonight, and the Hawks are on the road, so there is a ton of risk here. However, the shot volume will be there, and Mrazek doesn’t have terrible numbers to start the season. If he shuts down or limits the Leafs, the leverage could be huge in deep GPPs.

Others to Consider: Igor Shesterkin (NYR), Jacob Markstrom (CGY)

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Toronto Maple Leafs 1 – Auston Matthews/Mitch Marner/Tyler Bertuzzi/John Klingberg: Auston Matthews is on an absolute tear to start the season, netting a hat trick in both of their first two games. This line is hot, and in a great spot against Chicago tonight. Expect them to be heavily owned, and for good reason.

Detroit Red Wings 1 – Dylan Larkin/Lucas Raymond/Alex Debrincat/Moritz Seider: This is a fantastic looking line tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. They should match up against the top line, who is bleeding chances in the first two games of their season. This is a great GPP pivot off of Toronto, and could be the key to tonight.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

New York Rangers 2 – Filip Chytil/Artemi Panarin/Alexis Lafreniere: The Rangers host the Coyotes tonight in their home opener, and this is a good spot for the second line. They should see a bunch of the depth for Arizona tonight, opening them up lots of chances. You can also consider a power play look here, as Arizona has been pretty rough on the PK over the last few years.

Calgary Flames Power Play – Nazem Kadri/Elias Lindholm/Jonathan Huberdeau/Matt Coronato/Rasmus Andersson: The Flames have a good matchup tonight on the road against a Washington team that has limped out of the gate to start the season. The top line is the even strength play here, so mixing in Kadri will help differentiate and get exposure to the second line.

Florida Panthers 1 – Aleksander Barkov/Carter Verhaeghe/Evan Rodrigues/Oliver Ekman-Larsson: The Panthers’ top line is in a good even strength matchup against the second line for the Devils tonight. They are risky because they have been playing poorly to start the season, but this might be their chance to turn it around. Don’t stack them against Vanecek in the same lineup.

New Jersey Devils 1 – Jack Hughes/Tyler Toffoli/Jesper Bratt/Dougie Hamilton: Don’t trust Florida yet? That’s ok! We can turn to the top Devils line instead. They should see a lot of the Florida depth tonight, which puts them in a plus matchup.

Welcome back to WinDaily’s NHL Between the Benches article. It’s been a long off-season, but we are finally back with some NHL DFS. Between the Benches will be your go-to place for Friday night NHL Slates. Tonight’s 10/13 NHL slate begins at 7:00 pm ET, and we have two games taking place. Don’t forget to lock your lines and check the discord for any updates! Let’s get right into it!

10/13 NHL Stack Report

1. New Jersey Devils 1 (Bratt-Hughes-Toffoli)

— The Devils’ top line is a clear favorite of mine in this slate. They are clear favorites and are a high-scoring team going up against one of the worst defensive teams in the league. Unfortunately, for the Coyotes, their blue line looks just as disappointing as it did last year, with JJ Moser and Matt Dumba leading off as the top pairing. Even though the Devils played last night, I can see them ripping through the Coyotes in this spot. Both last night’s game and tonight’s game are taking place in New Jersey, and I was happy with the Devils’ ability to bounce back after going down early and giving up a tying goal in the third period. Jack Hughes shined last night, and I think we will see a lot more of him this season, including in tonight’s game, where the Devils are coming in with the highest implied total of the slate by far, at 4.1.

Ideal Defensive Partner(s): Dougie Hamilton (Honorable Mention(s): Luke Hughes)

2. Pittsburgh Penguins 1 (Guentzel-Crosby-Rust)

— This game is the far closer of the two games on tonight’s slate. Both of these teams know each other very well, and their rivalry can be highlighted by the presence of each team’s star players: Crosby’s Penguins and Ovechkin’s Capitals. For years, both players played alongside each other and have each cemented great legacies in their own right, whether it be Sid’s three Stanley Cups (2009, 2016, 2017) or Ovi’s chase for Gretzky’s elusive NHL goal-scoring record, both back-to-back first-overall picks (2004 and 2005) have cemented a legacy that has guaranteed a place in the Hall of Fame for both superstars.

For this game, Pittsburgh is coming in with the more complete team. Washington is very much a one-man show, whereas the Penguins have a full team of support behind Crosby, with Pittsburgh’s second line being arguably almost as dangerous as the first line. I see Pittsburgh’s depth overwhelming Washington’s thin defence in what will be a close game. I don’t see either team winning by more than two goals, and I can see a lot of goals being scored on both sides of this game. One thing seems clear, in a high-scoring, back-and-forth game, Crosby’s line will get involved.

Ideal Defensive Partner(s): Kris Letang (Honorable Mention(s): Ryan Graves, Erik Karlsson)

Honorable Mention(s): Pittsburgh Penguins 2 (Smith-Malkin-Rakell)

10/13 NHL Goalie Tracker

Best (Goalies to Roster)

  1. Akira Schmid
  2. Tristan Jarry
Honorable Mention(s): Karel Vejmelka (DEEP GPP OPTION)

Worst (Goalies to Target)

1. N/A (All goalies are playable today)
Honorable Mention(s): N/A

10/13 NHL Wild Card Targets

Luke Hughes
– The youngest of the three Hughes brothers is playing in his first full season this year. After impressing fans in the playoffs last year with two points over three games, Hughes is ready to make a big splash in his rookie year. Alongside his brother Jack, he will play on the Devils second power-play unit and are set to face off against a Coyotes team who were among the worst in goals allowed per game in 2022-23 at 3.6 GA/G, along with the sixth-worst PK rate in the league at 74.6% of penalties killed. Without any significant offseason improvements, the Coyotes are destined to return to the bottom of the league again this season. As a rookie, Hughes will provide good value in this spot.

Honorable Mention(s): Tom Wilson, Logan Cooley

Core Four: (ALWAYS BE STACKIN’)

Center Jack Hughes

Winger Tyler Toffoli

Defenseman – Ryan Graves

Goalie Akria Schmid

WE ARE BACK!!!! Just like that, the new NHL season is upon us, and we are so excited for another year! We kick off the new season tonight at 5:30pm Eastern time, so be sure to have your builds ready to go early tonight. With just three games on the slate, it will be an interesting one, with some volatility. Remember, early season NHL DFS is very high variance, and we are going off of very little stats to start with. So, play light, have some fun, and good luck!

Goalies

Tristan Jarry – Pittsburgh Penguins: Jarry and the Pens host the Chicago Blackhawks tonight, in what should be a winnable game for the Pens. There could be some limited upside here, so it’s risky, but Jarry will carry plenty of ownership.

Juuse Saros – Nashville Predators: The Preds head to Tampa tonight to take on the Lightning, and this is an upside spot. Tampa should generate a bunch of shots tonight, and Saros has the talent to keep up with them. Keep in mind, this is a risky play, as Saros is historically not as good on the road as he is at home. It’s worth a look in deep GPPs though.

High Risk Goalie Pick – Phillipp Grubauer: The Kraken head to Vegas tonight to take on the defending champs, and this is a good upside spot for Grubauer. Vegas should throw some shots at him tonight, and while he may give up a couple, he has a chance at the save bonus on DraftKings.

Others to Consider: Jonas Johansson (TBL), Adin Hill (VGK)

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Pittsburgh Penguins Power Play – Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin/Jake Guentzel/Kris Letang/Erik Karlsson: Yes, you read that right. The big acquisition over the summer was Erik Karlsson going to the Pens to bolster their blue line and give them some back end scoring. EK65 on the power play with Letang and company should give them a nice boost, and the Hawks were a bottom 10 penalty kill last year. Keep an eye on Guentzel, as he is a game time decision.

Tampa Bay Lightning Power Play – Brayden Point/Nikita Kucherov/Steven Stamkos/Nick Paul/Victor Hedman: The Lightning power play unit should continue to be dominant this year, and they are playable tonight against the Predators. Make sure you don’t play Saros in the same lineup if you go here. This unit will likely be the second most popular behind Pittsburgh.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Chicago Blackhawks 1 – Connor Bedard/Taylor Hall/Ryan Donato: Here comes Bedard! The rookie phenom and newest Hawk makes his debut on the road tonight against Pittsburgh. This top line had some preseason success, but we can’t be sure that it carries over to the regular season. It’ll be fun to watch him play tonight, but we don’t quite know how he will take to the big stage.

Nashville Predators 1 – Ryan O’Reilly/Filip Forsberg/Juuso Parssinen/Roman Josi: The addition of ROR here makes this line look very interesting. While they will not be that good defensively, they should be able to generate some scoring chances.

Vegas Golden Knights 1 – Jack Eichel/Ivan Barbashev/Jonathan Marchessault: We will find out tonight if there will be a Stanley Cup hangover, which is why this line is risky. They are a good scoring line, and should see some chances, so be sure to consider them tonight.

Seattle Kraken 3 – Yanni Gourde/Eeli Tolvanen/Oliver Bjorkstrand: One of the more prolific third lines in the league is this Kraken third line. While they are preferred on home ice, they should have a nice opportunity tonight against Vegas at very low ownership. Early in the season, it is good to stick to what we know from last year (until we learn more this year). So for now, we can confidently ride this line.

NHL DFS Honorable Mentions: SEA1, SEA2, NSH3, PIT2

It feels like the season just ended, yet here we are watching the NHL Draft in Nasvhille. In our recap below, we will run through some of the surprises and some of the not-so-surprising picks of round 1. We will also touch on the teams we think did well and didn’t. Let’s get right into it!

The Expected

Connor Bedard (CHI): The Canadian phenom who has been making headlines all over the place went first overall to the Chicago Blackhawks. He led the league in points at a whopping 143 in 57 games. He is easily the top prospect that was on the board, and should have an immediate impact for Chicago. The Hawks are a team in a rebuild, so this is a great first step towards a potent team. Bedard will be high on our list of plays this coming season.

Matvei Michkov (PHI): There were a ton of rumors flying around Philly and being really high on Michkov going into the draft. The KHL prospect comes in at number 2 on the international skaters prospect list, and will make a very big impact for the Flyers…eventually. There are a lot of geopolitical issues and other possible roadblocks for Michkov to make it to the NHL. However, this is a team that has finally committed to a rebuild, so even if it takes three years, he should make an impact when he gets there.

The Surprises

Leo Carlsson (ANH): Everyone expected Carlsson to go high, but not to Anaheim. This is where Fantilli was supposed to go, but the Ducks pulled a fast one and went with Leo. He is the 7th player from Sweden picked in the top three in the draft, and should be a solid foundation piece for Anaheim. The Ducks are a young team, and Carlsson should pair really well with the likes of Trevor Zegras and Mason McTavish.

Adam Fantilli (CBJ): Here was Columbus, a team that hasn’t been very successful, waiting to see who would fall to them at the third overall, and little did they know it would be Fantilli. Fantilli is considered the second best prospect in North America, and is a Hobey Baker award winner (think Heisman, but for hockey).

Dmitriy Simashev (ARI): The Coyotes ‘technically’ pulled the first big surprise of the draft by selecting a seemingly middle of the road defenseman. Simashev comes from the KHL and is ranked 19th in the international prospect skater pool. The Coyotes did fill a need here, as their blue line has been depleted with guys like Chychrun and OEL leaving for greener pastures. He won’t make an immediate impact, but once he gets to the NHL, he can become a top-pair D-man.

Gabriel Perreault (NYR): Perrault comes in at number 10 on the North American prospects list, and he was taken all the way at 23rd by the Rangers. This feels like a steal for a team who has a great blend of young talent and veteran presence. The Rangers continue to draft well and are on the upswing.

Winners and Losers

Every draft has winners and losers, and the NHL is no different. Here are some teams we think had good and bad first rounds in this year’s draft:

Winner – St. Louis Blues: The Blues had a very solid draft, as they picked 2 centers and a defenseman. As they try to bolster the middle of their lineup, these are solid picks along with the addition of Kevin Hayes from Philly in a trade. The addition of a D-man helps their blue line and should be a steady presence. With three picks in the first round, the Blues definitely came in as winners.

Winner – Philadelphia Flyers: The Flyers picked two solid players in their first round, kicking off their rebuild with some fireworks. After some trades and moves to get younger and stockpile talent, the Flyers made the first great step to rebuild.

Loser – Arizona Coyotes: The Coyotes didn’t really have a BAD draft, but they passed on some talent when they didn’t need to. For example, they could have had Michkov at six, and they decided to choose a D-man who was ranked 19th on the prospect list. Moreover, the Coyotes desperately need scoring, and they would have been able to get some scoring talent that high in the draft.

Loser – Vegas Golden Knights: A couple of things here – how can you be a loser in the draft when you won the Cup? And, you only had one pick and it was the last one. However, the Knights hedged their future for a win-now attitude, and they are very much lacking from a prospect perspective. They will need to stock up this season to start thinking about the future. If not, then their Cup run and success this year may be short-lived.

Introduction: If you’re a sports enthusiast who loves a good challenge and the chance to win big, daily fantasy sports (DFS) may be just what you’re looking for. DFS is a game of skill where you draft a virtual team of real-life athletes and compete against others for cash prizes on DraftKings, FanDuel, and other Daily Fantasy websites. But with so many players and strategies to choose from, how can you increase your chances of winning? In this article, we’ll provide some tips and tricks to help you dominate the competition and come out on top in DFS.

  1. Research the Players and Matchups- One of the most important aspects of DFS is understanding the players and their matchups. Look at statistics such as points per game, rebounds, assists, and minutes played. Pay attention to the opposing team’s defense and how they match up against the player you’re considering drafting. Use sites like ours to get insights, projections, and analysis of the upcoming games.
  2. Pay Attention to the Scoring System- each DFS platform has its own scoring system, and it’s essential to know how your players will earn points. For example, some platforms award bonus points for certain stats like double-doubles or triple-doubles. Others may give additional points for players who reach specific benchmarks, such as hitting a certain number of three-pointers or steals. Make sure you understand the scoring system before drafting your team.
  3. Diversify Your Lineup In DFS- It’s important to diversify your lineup and not rely on just a few players. Spread your investments across different positions and teams to minimize risk and maximize potential returns. You should also consider drafting players who are less popular but have a higher chance of outperforming their projected point totals.
  4. Monitor Player News and Injuries- Keep an eye on player news and injury reports leading up to the game. If a key player is out with an injury or is listed as questionable, it may impact their performance and reduce their potential point output. By staying up-to-date with the latest news, you can make informed decisions when drafting your lineup.
  5. Play to Your Budget- DFS typically has a salary cap, which means you can’t just draft all the top players. It’s essential to play within your budget and find a balance between high-priced stars and affordable players who can still earn you points. Don’t be afraid to take risks, but always make sure you’re getting the most value for your money.

Conclusion: DFS can be a thrilling and lucrative way to enjoy sports and win big. By following these tips and strategies, you can increase your chances of success and dominate the competition. Remember to research the players and matchups, pay attention to the scoring system, diversify your lineup, monitor player news and injuries, and play to your budget. With a little luck and a lot of skill, you could be the next DFS champion.

Welcome to another Friday edition of the WinDaily NHL Between the Benches Article! Unfortunately, this will be the last article of the 2022-23 NHL Regular season. It has been a pleasure writing about this whirlwind of a season, and I’m amped up for the playoffs! We do have one final small slate this season, and it’s a small two-gamer. Tonight’s 4/14 NHL slate begins at 7:30 pm ET. Don’t forget to lock your lines and check the discord for any updates! Let’s get right into it!

4/14 NHL Stack Report

1. Colorado Avalanche 1 (Rodrigues-MacKinnon-Rantanen)

— There aren’t a lot of surprises in this slate. This game is as straightforward as it gets. Colorado finished second in the Central Division this season. They ended the season with an 8-1-1 record over their last ten games, and despite the late push, Nashville won’t qualify for the playoffs, regardless of how tonight’s game goes. I am sure they are dejected, given how close it got, but the story of this game will most likely be the tune-up game before the playoffs for the Avalanche rather than the condolence party for the Preds. With that being said, Colorado’s top line has been simply unstoppable as of late, and I expect them to carry that momentum through tonight’s game and into the playoffs. Between Rantanen and MacKinnon alone, they have 22 points over their last five games, and each has seen around 22 minutes of ice time per game over that stretch. Simply unreal, and their linemate Rodrigues also has three points over his last five. All three of Colorado’s top liners see power play time, with MacKinnon and Rantanen on the top line and Rodrigues on the second line. I think it is safe to say that given that this is the last game before the playoffs if there is nobody resting, I don’t expect Colorado to take their foot off the gas. Also, it looks like Cale Makar will be ready in time for the playoffs, but for today’s game, Devon Toews will see the lion’s share of on-ice opportunities.

Ideal Defensive Partner(s): Devon Toews

2. Buffalo Sabres 1 (Skinner-Middlestat-Tuch)

— Now, both teams in this game were eliminated from the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs but in very different fashion. Buffalo had a late wild card push and fell just three points shy of a playoff spot (one point if they win tonight… ouch) and finished the season on a 7-2-1 run. They finished the season tied for third in the league in goals per game this season. They struggled big defensively, and that proved to be their downfall. On the other side of the ice, we have the Columbus Blue Jackets, who failed across the board this season. They were tied for second worst in the league this season and finished off the year with a 2-6-2 record over their last ten games. The Jackets were a disaster on both ends of the ice finishing in the bottom three in the league in both goals per game and goals against per game. They have a lot of work to do this offseason, and it will include a high draft pick in next year’s NHL Entry Draft, but I don’t see a world where they pull off an impressive performance in tonight’s game. Buffalo’s top line has also been really on fire as of late, scoring five goals and 15 assists amongst the three of them over their last five games and considering they have a higher implied total than the Avalanche (4.0 implied goals vs 3.7 implied goals), I am confident that Buffalo will perform tonight and the top line will be the guys getting on the scoresheet.

Ideal Defensive Partner(s): Rasmus Dahlin

Honorable Mention(s): Buffalo Sabres 2 (Greenway-Thompson-Cozens)

4/14 NHL Goalie Tracker

Best (Goalies to Roster)

  1. Devon Levi
  2. Pavel Francouz
    Honorable Mention(s): Kevin Lankinen

Worst (Goalies to Target)

1. Jon Gillies
Honorable Mention(s): N/A

4/14 NHL Wild Card Targets

Cody Glass
– There aren’t too many great things to say about the Nashville Predators right now. Josi, Duchene and Forsberg are all going to be out tonight, and their top line consists of Cody Glass, Phil Tomasino and Zach Sanford. I do not expect them to win tonight by any means, but Cody Glass could prove to be an interesting option (Deep GPP) for tonight’s small slate. He went from barely making the roster out of camp to starting on the top line at the end of the season. This has been a good season for Cody personally, even if it wasn’t for his team. He has also put together some impressive performances lately. He notched an assist on the OT winner for the Preds last night over the Minnesota Wild and has four points over his last five games. Glass has also seen an average of over 17 minutes of ice time per game over that stretch of games and has even racked up five blocked shots as well. He will be centering Nashville’s top power play tonight, and I expect him to get some really good chances tonight, even if the Preds ultimately lose out on the two points.

Honorable Mention(s): Evan Rodrigues, Dylan Cozens, Johnny Gaudreau

Core Four: (ALWAYS BE STACKIN’)

Center Casey Middlestat

Winger Mikko Rantanen

Defenseman – Devon Toews

Goalie Devon Levi
