As we head towards New Year’s Eve, NHL action is heating up very fast. We have a great nine-gamer for tonight’s Friday Night 12/29 NHL slate. The first puck drop begins at 7:00 pm ET. Don’t forget to lock your lines and check the discord for any updates! Without further ado, let’s get right into it!

12/29 NHL Stack Report

1. Toronto Maple Leafs 1 (Knies-Matthews-Marner)

— Offensively, the Leafs have been one of the hottest teams in hockey. They are currently tied for third in the league in goals per game, with an average of 3.53 goals per game. Their offensive charge is led by their superstar forward, Auston Matthews, who has been on an absolute tear as of late with 12 goals and five assists over his last eight games. His performances have been improving the fantasy status of his teammates as well, with both Knies and Marner benefitting from Matthews’ production. Tonight, they’ll be coming in against a Blue Jackets side who have lost their last three games. The Leafs have also faced off against the Blues Jackets twice this month, and on both occasions, it ended up being a goal fest for Toronto as they have nine goals combined over those two games (6-5 OT Loss for the Leafs and a 4-1 Win for the Leafs). Although the Leafs may have some work to do on the defensive end, their offence is certainly not an issue and they are in an excellent spot to score high for your DFS lines tonight.

Ideal Defensive Partner(s): Morgan Rielly

2. Dallas Stars 1 (Robertson-Hintz-Pavelski)

— Dallas is arguably in an even better spot than the Leafs tonight as they are coming in against their divisional rivals and the second-worst team in the league, the Chicago Blackhawks, in the first half of a home and away series. The Stars are coming into their home arena as one of the hottest teams in the league as they have put together an impressive stretch of games as of late with five wins over their last seven games (their only two recent losses came against the St. Louis Blues and were one-goal games). The Blackhawks on the other hand have lost five of their last seven and are in arguably one of the worst matchups of the slate. Dallas’ top line has been particularly impressive with every member of their top line averaging a point per game or more over the sit last four games while also seeing time on Dallas’ top powe play unit. Putting their whole line together for Daily Fantasy can end up being a little pricey but I highly recommend having some exposure to Dallas’ top line tonight.

Ideal Defensive Partner(s): Miro Heiskanen (Honorable Mention(s): Thomas Harley)

Honorable Mention(s): Arizona Coyotes 2 (Maccelli-Bjugstad-Crouse)

12/29 NHL Goalie Tracker

Best (Goalies to Roster)

  1. Scott Wedgewood
  2. Alexander Georgiev
Honorable Mention(s): Ilya Samsonov, Connor Ingram

Worst (Goalies to Target)

1. Petr Mrazek
Honorable Mention(s): Elvis Merzlikins

12/29 NHL Wild Card Targets

Ilya Samsonov
– Sammy has a lot to prove. Leafs’ other top goalie, Joseph Woll, is out with an injury, and with his late struggles, Samsonov has been unable to grasp firm control of the starting job, so much so that in their last game, the Leafs turned to their third-string option, Martin Jones. In tonight’s matchup, Samsonov is being given another opportunity. He is starting in a game that he is very well positioned to win, with the Leafs coming in one one of the best odds to win on the slate, along with a very low implied goal total from the Blue Jackets. Samsonov is in a good spot here and has something to prove in tonight’s game. Despite some shaky recent performances, he is worth considering on a slate with not many solid goaltending options.

Honorable Mention(s): Colton Sissons, Anthony Mantha

Core Four: (ALWAYS BE STACKIN’)

Center Auston Matthews

Winger Jason Robertson

Defenseman – Gustav Forsling

Goalie Scott Wedgewood

After another wild week of hockey, we are back this Friday with another light four-game slate. Tonight’s 12/22 NHL slate begins at 7:00 pm ET. Don’t forget to lock your lines and check the discord for any updates! Without further ado, let’s get right into it!

12/22 NHL Stack Report

1. New York Rangers 1 (Kreider-Zibanejad-Wheeler)

— On tonight’s small slate, we’re going to go back to the well with the New York Rangers. For those who don’t remember, the New York Rangers are currently on a three-game winning streak and have amassed a 22-7-1 record, good enough for the best record in the Metro Division and the third-best record in the NHL. Along with being the biggest favorites on the slate, the New York Rangers also have the highest implied goal total on the slate at 3.6. With the Rangers playing the way they are, it’ll be hard for most teams to beat them, including a resurging Edmonton Oilers. The Rangers have simply found a way to put all their major pieces together this season. They have elite-level scoring, dependable defensemen, grit and a strong, competitive goalie tandem. The Oilers are definitely not a team one can walk over, and I can see them getting some goals in this matchup, but statistically, I see the Rangers as a clear top option for tonight’s slate.

Ideal Defensive Partner(s): Adam Fox

2. Detroit Red Wings 2 (DeBrincat-Copp-Kane)

— The Red Wings’ second line has been very hot as of late. Each player on this line has recorded at least two points over their last two games, and even though, as a team, the Red Wings haven’t been able to win games, as a line, DeBrincat, Kane and Copp have managed to gel well together. There will be a lot of goals in this matchup on both sides (Over/Under is set at 6.5 goals), and with the hefty cost of the top line on this slate, I really like the value this second line offers based on their recent scoring. Their opponents, the Philadelphia Flyers, have been a little inconsistent at times and are in the second half of a back-to-back, so the Red Wings’ second line definitely has the ability and the opportunity to make an impact in this matchup. Not only do DeBrincat and Kane both see Power Play time on the Red Wings’ top unit, but we are also talking about a Red Wings team that is fifth in goals per game in the league this season. So, despite their defensive issues as a team, the Red Wings second line is a solid offensive option that provides some salary relief in this smaller four-game slate.

Ideal Defensive Partner(s): Shayne Gostisbehere (Honorable Mention(s): Moritz Seider)

Honorable Mention(s): Philadelphia Flyers 2 (Tippett-Frost-Brink), Boston Bruins 1 (Marchand-Zacha-Pastrnak)

12/22 NHL Goalie Tracker

Best (Goalies to Roster)

  1. Jonathan Quick
  2. Linus Ullmark
    Honorable Mention(s): Connor Hellebuyck

Worst (Goalies to Target)

1. Jake Allen
Honorable Mention(s): James Reimer

12/22 NHL Wild Card Targets

Gabriel Vilardi
– With the long-term injury to Kyle Connor, Gabriel Vilardi has really grown into his top-line role as a point-scoring winger alongside Mark Scheifele. Not only has recorded 10 points (5 Goals and 5 Assists) over his last four games, but he has recorded at least three shots on goal per game over his last six and has gotten anywhere from 17 to 22 minutes of ice time per game with ice time on the Jets’ top power-play unit. Vilardi definitely is the hot hand in the Jets lineup, and although they are in a tough matchup with the Bruins, the Bruins have lost three of their last four, while the Jets have won three of their last four. Vilardi, for me, is a solid option for tonight’s four-game slate as both a solo player option or in a stack alongside Mark Schiefele.

Honorable Mention(s): Morgan Geekie-James Van Riemsdyk, Nick Foligno

Core Four: (ALWAYS BE STACKIN’)

Center Mika Zibanejad

Winger Chris Kreider

Defenseman – Neal Pionk

Goalie Jonathan Quick

There’s no two ways about it, last night was an absolutely horrible slate. Hopefully tonight brings us a better result. With 11 games on the slate, this one should be much better. Let’s look at the best NHL DFS plays for tonight. Good luck!

Goalies

Connor Ingram – Arizona Coyotes: The Coyotes host the Senators tonight, who have been pretty bad of late. They have been struggling to generate chances and have lacked in the scoring department. Ingram has been fantastic and this is a great matchup for him tonight.

Cam Talbot – Los Angeles Kings: The Kings head to San Jose tonight to take on the Sharks in what should be a win for Talbot. This one should be chalky, so this is more of a cash play tonight.

Devon Levi – Buffalo Sabres: Levi and the Sabres host the Blue Jackets tonight in a solid matchup. Levi has been playing well, and he should be able to snag a win tonight.

High Risk Goalie Pick – Martin Jones – Toronto Maple Leafs: In a small sample, Jones’ numbers look great. He could be due for some regression, and the Leafs play the Rangers tonight, so this one is definitely a risky play. The shot volume will be there.

Others to Consider: Juuse Saros (NSH), Andrei Vasilevskiy (TBL), Thatcher Demko (VAN)

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Colorado Avalanche 1 – Nathan MacKinnon/Valeri Nichushkin/Mikko Rantanen/Devon Toews: Yikes. This is a ridiculous matchup and in theory a really obvious play. The Avalanche head to Chicago to face the Blackhawks, where they should be able to outclass them up and down the ice. Makar might still be out tonight, but if he skates, then he takes the place of Toews.

Buffalo Sabres 1 – Tage Thompson/Alex Tuch/Zach Benson/Rasmus Dahlin: This top line for the Sabres is in a great spot tonight against the top line for the Blue Jackets. Tarasov is getting the start for Columbus, which elevates this line to an even better spot than they were in before that news.

Los Angeles Kings 2 – Phillip Danault/Trevor Moore/Kevin Fiala: The Kings’ second line should see the Hertl line for most of the night tonight, setting them up in a prime matchup. The Sharks, as we know, are very bad on defense, so this one could get ugly for them.

Toronto Maple Leafs 1 – Auston Matthews/William Nylander/Matthew Knies/Morgan Rielly: The Leafs have been scoring in bunches as well as creating tons of chances over their last five games. On top of that, Igor for the Rangers has been absolutely terrible, so this is a fantastic spot for the Leafs’ top line if Matthews plays. If he sits, then they are high risk.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Arizona Coyotes 2 – Nick Bjugstad/Lawson Crouse/Matias Maccelli: The second line for the Coyotes should see the top line for the Sens tonight in a nice matchup. They have been playing well of late, and this is a good spot for them.

New York Islanders 2 – Brock Nelson/Pierre Engvall/Kyle Palmieri: The second line for the Isles is in a great spot against the top six for the Oilers. Edmonton is not great when it comes to defense, so there should be plenty of chances for this group.

Los Angeles Kings 3 – Pierre-Luc Dubois/Alex Laferriere/Arthur Kaliyev: The addition of Kaliyev to the third line makes them VERY interesting, and they should see their chances against a poor San Jose depth tonight.

Philadelphia Flyers 3 – Joel Farabee/Ryan Poehling/Cam Atkinson: The Flyers have been rolling lately, and this matchup tonight against the Devils looks really interesting for this third line. They are the epitome of risk, as they have not been scoring much, but they should see their chances.

It’s hard to believe that we have just two weeks left in 2023. We head into this week with a fairly balanced NHL schedule, one that brings us a nice five game slate tonight. This looks to be a low scoring slate, so we have to nail it. Let’s look at the best NHL DFS plays for tonight. Good luck!

Goalies

Ville Husso – Detroit Red Wings: This is a little bit risky, but the Wings host the Ducks, who are struggling, injured, and also on the second leg of a traveling back to back. This one is a lot more about opportunity.

Connor Hellebuyck – Winnipeg Jets: The Jets host the Canadiens tonight in what should be a solid matchup for Helly and the Jets.

Filip Gustavsson – Minnesota Wild: The Wild head to Pittsburgh to face the Penguins, who have been beat up pretty bad for a few games. The injuries piled up, but they are looking to get Rakell back tonight, which should help. However, this is still a good matchup for Gus.

High Risk Goalie Pick – Joey Daccord – Seattle Kraken: Road matchups are usually a little bit tougher to gauge, especially for goalies. However, Daccord has fantastic numbers and this appears to be a game where both teams kind of cancel each other out. Dallas has been giving up goals, but chances have been limited, so there is a chance that the Kraken can pull an upset tonight.

Others to Consider: Anthony Stolarz (FLA)

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Winnipeg Jets 1 – Mark Scheifele/Gabriel Vilardi/Nikolaj Ehlers/Josh Morrissey: This line gets a date with the depth for the Canadiens tonight, setting up a fantastic looking matchup. They should see tons of chances, and they should be able to light the lamp a few times tonight.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Detroit Red Wings Power Play – Dylan Larkin/Patrick Kane/JT Compher/Alex Debrincat/Shayne Gostisbehere: The Red Wings have an interesting matchup tonight at home against the Ducks. Anaheim is middle of the pack when it comes to killing penalties, but they take the most penalties per game in the league, so there should be plenty of chances for this unit. Make sure that Larkin is back for sure tonight.

Calgary Flames 2 – Nazem Kadri/Martin Pospisil/Connor Zary: The Flames host the Panthers tonight, and this is a solid matchup for the second line. They should see a lot of the second line for Florida, creating a plus matchup.

Minnesota Wild 1 – Joel Eriksson Ek/Kirill Kaprizov/Matt Boldy/Brock Faber: The Wild top line has a sold matchup with the second line for Pittsburgh tonight. Nedeljkovic has been solid, making it a riskier matchup.
