It’s Thursday and we’re thirsty for some NHL. We have ten games tonight so not overwhelming but it’s what I’d call a nice-sized slate. Aside from reading the article, don’t forget to check out our NHL DFS Projection Model which is available every morning.

11/10 NHL Main Slate of Games – Beginning 7 p.m. ET

*All odds and player pricing below have been obtained from DraftKings and are accurate as of the time of writing*

New York Rangers (-155) at Detroit Red Wings (+135) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Vegas Golden Knights (-170) at Buffalo Sabres (+145)6.5 Projected Goal Total

Calgary Flames (+135) at Boston Bruins (-155)6 Projected Goal Total

Edmonton Oilers (+135) at Carolina Hurricanes (-155) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Arizona Coyotes (+225) at New York Islanders (-265) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Ottawa Senators (+155) at New Jersey Devils (-180) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

San Jose Sharks (+140) at St. Louis Blues (-165) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Philadelphia Flyers (+110) at Columbus Blue Jackets (-130) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Nashville Predators (+160) at Colorado Avalanche (-190) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Chicago Blackhawks (+225) at Los Angeles Kings (-265) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Vegas One “Jack Eichel ($7,100), Chandler Stephenson ($4,800), Mark Stone ($5,300)

Main lock/early games always tend to be more popular so I’m really pulling from the first six games of the night here. The Devils will be popular as they’re on a roll and later on Colorado will get some ownership, being the champs and all. However, I’ll start off with the Golden Knight’s top line. They are currently tied for third in the NHL with eight goals and strong peripheral stats “4th in the NHL in SATF” to match.

After a hot start, the Sabres have now dropped three straight games while Vegas has coasted to eight straight wins. The Golden Knight’s +20 point differential is second-best in the NHL, only behind the Boston Bruins. As -170 favorites, they are one of the bigger favorites on the slate and the top line is also incredibly affordable. They are priced more like your average second line than a line toward the top of the NHL in both goals scored and all supporting categories.

11/10 NHL Favorite Contrarian Line

Los Angeles Two “Phillip Danault ($4,400), Trevor Moore ($3,900), Viktor Arvidsson ($4,000)”

A super cheap line from the top favorite of the night? A sneaky second line that’s quietly 10th in the NHL in SATF? A late-night hammer galore? We get all of the above and more in the form of the King’s second line. Unfortunately, neither of the three skaters gets any time on Los Angeles’ top power-play unit. They do however share a correlation on the second power-play unit. Overall, the type of line you try to weave into a large field tournament entry and not a 10-man contest.

Defensemen and Goalies

Defensemen

Dougie Hamilton – New Jersey $7,000 – If splurging up I think I might not try to get on the Erik Karlsson train and with Rasmus Dahlin in a tough matchup look elsewhere. We have yet to get a Dougie ceiling game and with the Devils rolling this could be a nice spot to buy in.

Ryan Graves – New Jersey – $3,300 – For far less money, you could also take a stab at Hamilton’s Devils teammate. Graves has goals in three of his last six games “he seems to alternate every other game”. That’s not bad scoring prowess for a $3,300 defenseman.

Goalies

Ilya Sorokin – New York Islanders – $8,100 – Stellar 2.20 GAA and winner of five of his last six starts. Tonight the Islanders are tied with the Kings for the title of slate-high favorites at -265. With the total set a bit low at six, it can be assumed most of that total is not projected to go the Coyote’s way.

Igor Shesterkin – New York Rangers – $7,400 – It has not been an ideal start to the season for Shesterkin. However, I think you can trust the talent and just take the discount in tournaments.

11/10 NHL Best Bet

Philadelphia/Columbus Blue Jackets – U 6.5 (-110) – DraftKings1 Unit – The model over at our friends at Sharp is showing a total of 4.98 providing for a 19.29% edge. Carter Hart was back in practice Wednesday and wait for him to be confirmed in net before placing this bet. On the other side, Joonas Korpisalo’s 5.00 GAA is surely lacking but he has only had one start “against Colorado no less”. I think we can give that man a pass.

We have a tiny three-game Sunday slate, but this will allow us to hone in and stick to a couple of lines. Aside from reading the article, don’t forget to check out our NHL DFS Projection Model which is available every morning.

11/6 NHL Main Slate of Games – Beginning 5 p.m. ET

*All odds and player pricing below have been obtained from DraftKings and are accurate as of the time of writing*

Toronto Maple Leafs (+135) at Carolina Hurricanes (-155) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Detroit Red Wings (+195) at New York Rangers (-230)6.5 Projected Goal Total

Florida Panthers (-205) at Anaheim Ducks (+175) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

New York Rangers Two “Vincent Trocheck ($5,900), Artemi Panarin ($6,600), Alexis LaFrenire ($3,200)

In terms of SATF, the New York Rangers are tearing up the charts thus far this season.

It’s peripheral stats like these that help us determine future scoring to the best of our ability. Given the two options the Rangers offer, let’s roll with the league leaders in SATF, NYR Two. They will be facing an absolute trash can in the opposing net, in the form of Alex Nedeljkovic and his 4.96 GAA. With Detroit on a back-to-back, the Wings will likely be clipped here by the Rangers. Although I’m rolling with the second line, the top line is certainly in play as well.

11/6 NHL Favorite Contrarian Line

Florida One “Aleksandr Barkov ($7,500), Matthew Tkachuk ($8,200), Carter Verhaeghe ($4,600)”

The Ducks have been getting smashed recently. The problem with Florida is that a lot of the production is spread throughout their lines, rather than concentrated. That said, the talent on the top line has finally been shining through a bit. They are currently tied with many others lines for sixth in the NHL in scoring. Speaking of trash cans in goal, with a GAA of 4.58 John Gibson looks like he’s certainly seen better days.

Additional Lines to Consider

New York Rangers One – Mika Zibanejad “$8,400”, Chris Kreider “$6,300”, Kappo Kakko “$3,700”

Florida Two – Sam Bennett “$4,800”, Sam Reinhart “$4,500”, Rudolfs Balcers “$2,700” VALUE LINE

Defensemen

Brent Burns – Carolina $6,000 – Burnsy is having a career renaissance finally free of San Jose and their losing ways. He has had double-digit DraftKings points in all games this season except two. You could pay an extra $800 for Brandon Montour in a better spot. However, using a Carolina defender allows us some third-team exposure in addition to saving a little bit of salary.

Brett Pesce – Carolina – $3,400 – Not off to the greatest start with only three assists across 11 games. However, Pesce’s due for offensive regression given his usual standards plus cheap.

Goalies

Igor Shesterskin – New York Rangers – $8,400 – The most talented goaltender on the slate also playing for the slate’s largest favorite.

Frederick Andersen – Carolina – $8,200 – Almost here by default as this is not the slate to go dumpster diving and Spencer Knight is blah. He should face some decent shot volume and there of course is the revenge narrative in play.

11/6 NHL Best Bet

Florida Panthers 60 Min Line (-140) – DraftKings1 Unit – Seems like Florida might be too much to handle for a struggling John Gibson and company. We also get shorter odds here than for the Rangers against Detroit.

If last night’s two-game slate let you down, it’s time to get thirsty as we have a thirteen-game NHL Thursday on tap. Aside from reading the article, don’t forget to check out our NHL DFS Projection Model which is available every morning.

11/3 NHL Main Slate of Games – Beginning 7 p.m. ET

*All odds and player pricing below have been obtained from DraftKings and are accurate as of the time of writing*

Washington Capitals (-120) at Detroit Red Wings (+100) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Carolina Hurricanes (+120) at Tampa Bay Lightning (-140)6.5 Projected Goal Total

Vegas Golden Knights (-135) at Ottawa Senators (+115) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Boston Bruins (+105) at New York Rangers (-125) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Seattle Kraken (+155) at Minnesota Wild (-180) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

New York Islanders (+100) at St. Louis Blues (-120) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Montreal Canadiens (+175) at Winnipeg Jets (-205) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Los Angeles Kings (-170) at Chicago Blackhawks (+145) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Nashville Predators (+160) at Calgary Flames (-190) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

New Jersey Devils (+135) at Edmonton Oilers (-155) – 7 Projected Goal Total

Dallas Stars (-195) at Arizona Coyotes (+165) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Anaheim Ducks (+140) at Vancouver Canucks (-165) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Florida Panthers (-215) at San Jose Sharks (+185) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Edmonton One “Connor McDavid ($9,900), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins ($6,000), Zach Hyman ($6,700)

I wouldn’t be particularly worried about any one line being popular on a thirteen-game slate. Not surprisingly, McGod and company have been eating early on. The Oiler’s top line is currently tied for second in the NHL with three other lines with seven full-line goals to their name. They also have a juicy matchup tonight as the home favorite in the highest total game of the night, the only game set at 7. All three skaters are members of Edmonton’s power-play unit, so consider another box checked. If there is a drawback, it’s that Connor McDavid’s sky-high pricetag comprises a lot of salary for one player. But hey, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

11/3 NHL Favorite Contrarian Line

Carolina Two “Martin Necas ($5,900), Andrei Svechnikov ($7,600), Jasper Kotkaniemi ($3,000)”

The contrarian line is usually the fun line to write up. While we’re looking for a line that’s off the board, it doesn’t mean we can’t use peripheral stats to our advantage. One of my favorite metrics is SATF which includes all shot attempts, so it factors in both missed shots and blocked shots. I think that analyzing SATF helps us to identify which lines are due for both positive and negative regression in terms of actual goals scored.

Most of the leading lines in terms of SATF are fairly notable. However, as you can see below, we have a relatively obscure line placing third in SATF.

Andrei Svechnikov is a bit of a budding star but I think it’s safe to assume that his linemates tend to go a bit under the radar. I can guarantee you very few people will be playing them with Carolina a +120 underdog against the Tampa Bay Lightning. However, they just could be that line that helps us take down a large field tournament.

Additional Lines to Consider

Dallas One – Roope Hintz “$6,500”, Jason Robertson “$7,000”, Joe Pavelski “$5,300”

Florida Two – Sam Bennett “$4,700”, Sam Reinhart “$4,600”, Rudolfs Balcers “$2,600” VALUE LINE

Defensemen “Goalies covered in Between the Pipes”

Defenseman “high-end” – NONE

“mid-range” – Shea Theodore – Las Vegas $5,100 – He is finally heating up with double-digits DraftKings points in four of his last five games. He has scored goals in two of his last four games and he’s the type of player who goes on streaks.

“mid-range #2” – Alec Martinez – Las Vegas – $4,500 – While he doesn’t have Theodore’s upside, you can save $600 with his teammate. Martinez has double-digits DraftKings points in five of his last six games, so certainly no slouch.

“low-end”Erik Gustafsson – Washington – $2,500 – With John Carlson out, Gustafsson is quarterbacking Washington’s top power-play unit at the dead minimum price.

11/3 NHL Best Bet

Washington Capitals (-120) – DraftKings1 Unit – The model over at our friends at Sharp is showing some edge here. Both teams have a lot of injuries at the moment, but the Caps are the better team.

The NFL may be the main ticket item today for most sports fans, but we still have some NHL. The four-game Sunday slate starts at 7 p.m. ET as the afternoon NFL games are coming to a close. Aside from reading the article, don’t forget to check out our NHL DFS Projection Model which is available every morning.

10/30 NHL Main Slate of Games – Beginning 7 p.m. ET

*All odds and player pricing below have been obtained from DraftKings and are accurate as of the time of writing*

Minnesota Wild (-180) at Chicago Blackhawks (+155) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Toronto Maple Leafs (-180) at Anaheim Ducks (+155)6.5 Projected Goal Total

New York Rangers (-200) at Arizona Coyotes (+170) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Winnipeg Jets (+165) at Vegas Golden Knights (-195) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Toronto Two “John Tavares ($6,400), William Nylander ($6,100), Nicholas Robertson ($3,800)

I just wrote up this line the other night and it didn’t work out. However, there are two teams that I want to target on this slate, the Ducks and the Coyotes. The Ducks and Coyotes have allowed 36 and 37 goals respectively in eight and seven games played. The only teams to allow more goals thus far this season have also played more games. We also get two strong offenses matching up with them in the form of the Maple Leafs and Rangers. Toronto’s second line is salary friendly enough that we can still have some flexibility in filling out the rest of our lineups. Their expected projections offer better per dollar value than the top line.

10/30 NHL Favorite Contrarian Line

New York Rangers Two “Vincent Trocheck ($6,100), Artemi Panarin ($7,200), Alexis Lafreniere ($3,500)”

Like Toronto Two, I previously wrote up this line earlier this season with little reward to show for it. However, they draw a terrific matchup against a defensively challenged Coyotes squad. I think that the salary/upside versus the Ranger’s top line is a bit more balanced than with Toronto. I am not sure if they are truly contrarian, but I also think both Toronto lines and possibly the Rangers’ top line will all be more popular.

Additional Lines to Consider

Toronto One – Auston Matthews “$8,800”, Mitchell Marner “$6,700”, Michael Bunting “$3,600”

New York Rangers One – Mika Zibanejad “$8,300”, Chris Kreider “$5,800”, Kaapo Kakko “$3,900”

Defensemen

Defenseman “high-end” – NONE – Waste of salary

“mid-range” – Shea Theodore – Las Vegas – Theodore has yet to really break out. However, when he catches fire, he tends to get really hot. It’s a tough matchup with the Winnipeg Jets, who have excelled defensively early on. However, that is already built into the price tag. You can also go with Alex Pietrangelo who is seeing top power-play time. However, that extra $1,000 in salary has better uses.

“low-end”Calen AddisonMinnesota – Quarterbacking the Wild’s top power-play unit at a diminished price. Much like Theodore he also helps to satisfy the three-team rule as Addison is not on Toronto or the Rangers.

“Goalies covered in Between the Pipes”- no edition tomorrow so my picks are Logan Thompson – High End and Connor Hellebuyck – Low End

10/30 NHL Best Bet

Chicago Blackhawks “Puck Line/Money Line Combo” – (-155) 0.5 Units/(+155) 0.5 Units- DraftKings

Both teams come in on the second night of a back-to-back. Surprisingly, the Blackhawks have been the better team thus far this season. I think we take the plus odds on the ML here and grab the spread as a bit of hedge hoping the Hawks don’t lose substantially.

Welcome to the Friday edition of Between the Pipes, where we’ll dive deep into the night’s goalies.

It’s Friday and that normally means a smaller slate and tonight is no different.  Tonight we’ll have a nicely sized 5-game slate of NHL DFS to navigate through.

Let’s dig in and see if we can find goalies that will take us to the top of the leaderboards!

NHL DFS Goalies – Cash

Linus Ullmark ($8.3k DK/ $8.7k FD) – Boston Bruins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets (-150 Favorites)

Linus Ullmark is probably one of the safer goalies to play tonight.  While the Boston Bruins will be the road team tonight, they’re still heavy favorites to take this one against the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Ullmark has played extremely well to start the year.  Through his first 6 games of the season, Ullmark has just a 2.01 GAA and a 5.36 Goals Saved Above Average (GSAA).  His 5.36 GSAA is by far the top number of any goalie playing tonight.  The matchup is a really good one for Ullmark tonight.

The Blue Jackets so far this season have struggled to really get the offense clicking on all cylinders.  They’re scoring just over 3 goals per game and if we compare what they’ve done offensively to the other teams playing tonight, they’d be in the bottom 2.  If playing cash games tonight, Ullmark should be the guy you look to first.

Triston Jarry ($8.5k DK/ $8.8k FD) – Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Vancouver Canucks (-165 Favorites)

The Vancouver Canucks got their first W of the season last night.  With a matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight, I just don’t see them starting a winning streak.  Triston Jarry is a borderline cash game play tonight as the Penguins are one of the bigger favorites on the board tonight and should get an easy win tonight.  Jarry’s play has been mostly good to start the season.  All of his metrics have been pretty good.  His 2.81 GAA is very solid, as is his .923 save percentage.

He also has a very respectable 3.51 GSAA.  That would rank 3 among the goalies projected to be in net tonight.  The Canucks are on the back end of a back-to-back and could have some tired legs and may be hung over after popping the bubbly after securing their first W.  Look for Jarry to have a solid night and secure an easy win.

NHL DFS Goalies – GPP

Ilya Sorokin ($7.1k DK/ $7.5k FD)– New York Islanders vs. Carolina Panthers (160 Underdogs)

While all the focus in New York is on reigning Vezina Trophy winner Igor Shesterkin, Ilya Sorokin is quietly taking the state by storm.  The Islanders are underdogs tonight but that won’t phase me when inserting Sorokin into my GPP lineups tonight.  The dude has been really good to start the year and it’s not a fluke.  He finished last season with a 2.40 GAA and a .925 save percentage.  This season he’s improved upon both numbers with a 2.25 GAA and a .931 save percentage.  His 4.31 GSAA is second only to Linus Ullmark of the goalies playing tonight.

Sorokin’s confidence should be sky-high coming into this one as he just shut out the Rangers after stopping 41 shots.  The Hurricanes fire a ton of pucks on the net, but many of the shots have been outside the high-danger zone.  Sorokin should be able to put his best foot forward against this team and have a solid night.  My only concern is that he may not get the W, but should face enough shots to make his outing count.

Alexander Georgiev ($7.9k DK/ $8k FD) – Colorado Avalanche vs. New Jersey Devils (-135 Favorites)

I didn’t list Georgiev as a cash game play because the Devils do have some offensive prowess on their team.  There’s some risk to playing him, but there’s also a ton of reward.  The former Rangers goaltender has been really good to start his Avalanche career. Through his 5 games, he’s sporting a 2.56 GAA and a .921 save percentage.

He’s going to face a team in the Devils tonight that fires just a ton of pucks on the net.  Of all the teams playing tonight, no one has more shots on goal per game than the Devils.  The Devils are currently at 39.71 shots on goal per game.  There’s going to be a ton of volume for Georgiev tonight.  If the Devils continue to get this many shots on goal, Georgiev stands a great chance to get the all-important 35-save bonus on DK tonight.  He makes for a great GPP play tonight.

NHL DFS Goalies – Goalies to Avoid

Karel Vejmelka ($7.5k DK/ $6.9k FD) – Arizona Coyotes vs. Winnipeg Jets (+140 Underdogs)

Statistically speaking, Vejmelka is the worst goalie on this slate.  He has the highest GAA at 4.77 and also one of the worst save percentages at .877.  His -4.17 GSAA is also one of the worst marks of any goalie projected to play tonight.  I highly recommend avoiding using him tonight and stacking against him may be an option.

Elvis Merzlikins ($6.9k DK/ $7.3k FD) – Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Boston Bruins (+130 Underdogs)

It’s quite possible we’ll be hearing tonight, “Elvis has left the net” after he gets pulled for giving up too many goals.  Merzlikins is having just an awful start to the year.  He’s giving up more than 4 goals per game and has a save percentage of just .863.  His -5.47 GSAA is by far the worst number of any goalie tonight.  He’s an “avoid at any cost” tonight.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green.

Welcome to the premiere edition of Between the Pipes, where we’ll dive deep into the night’s goalies.

It’s Thursday and that means we have a large slate.  Tonight we have a 10-game slate of NHL DFS after just 3 games last night.  That means we’ll have plenty of options to choose from in terms of goalies.

Let’s dig in and see if we can find goalies that will take us to the top of the leaderboards!

NHL DFS Goalies

Eric Comrie ($8.2k DK/ $8k FD) – Buffalo Sabres vs. Montreal Canadiens (-165 Favorites)

Although he struggled in his last outing vs. Seattle, Eric Comrie has been pretty solid overall this season.  Through his first 4 games, he’s sporting a .908 save percentage and a 3.51 GAA.  Both numbers are respectable compared to the rest of the goalies projected to take the ice tonight.  He also has a .45 Goals Saved Above Average (GSAA).

Comrie also has the advantage of playing against a Canadiens team that has really struggled to get the offense going this season.  Through their first 7 games this season, the Canadiens’ anemic offense is scoring just 2.43 goals per game.  Even though they are taking nearly 30 shots per game, they just aren’t finishing.  They should get enough volume on Comrie tonight to help him pay off his salary.

Marc-Andre Fleury ($7.7k DK/ $6.6k FD) – Minnesota Wild vs. Ottawa Senators (-130 Favorites) – FanDuel Specific Play

After struggling out of the gate, a few easier matchups have helped Fleury regain his form.  Fleury is coming into this one off arguably his best game of the season.  He stopped 26 of 27 shots against the Canadiens on Tuesday, earning himself his second win of the season.

Fleury bottomed out at -7 DK points in his second start of the season. Since then, he’s slowly progressed upward as he’s had 11, 18, and 20 DK points.  While the matchup vs. the Senators will be a tough one as they’re scoring more than 4 goals per game, I do like Fleury to get the W in this one.  This pick is reserved solely for GPP as I wouldn’t touch him in cash games.  He’s a high-risk, high-reward pick for this evening.

Erik Kallgren ($8.2k DK/ $8.6k FD)– Toronto Maple Leaves vs. San Jose Sharks (-225 Favorites)

Through their first 9 games of the season, the San Jose Sharks have been absolutely atrocious.  They lead the league with 7 losses so far.  The Sharks have more losses than most teams have games played. That isn’t good.  Their offense has been nearly invisible as they are scoring just 1.89 goals per game.  That’s significantly lower than every team on the ice tonight.

While Kallgren is far from an excellent goaltender, the Maple Leafs are heavy favorites and he should get the W tonight.  If he can limit the damage tonight, he could be one of the higher-scoring goaltenders on the night.

Carter Hart ($7k DK/ $8.1k FD) – Philadelphia Flyers vs. Florida Panthers (+170 Underdogs) – Playable on both, but more so on DraftKings

If you aren’t stacking the Panthers tonight, Carter Hart is an option in the net.  Through 4 games, he’s been exceptional.  He has a 1.75 GAA and a 6.03 GSAA.  His .949 save percentage ranks second of all the goaltenders projected to be in net not.  He’ll likely give up a pair of goals tonight, but he’ll also face enough shot volume that he should still be well into the teens in terms of scoring.

One thing that has really stood out so far with his play is that he’s been able to stop every single high-danger shot that has come his way.  He’s a perfect 43 for 43 in that category.  He’s GPP-worthy tonight as he’s been one of the top goalies in the league this season.

Jake Oettinger ($8k DK/ $8.5k FD) – Dallas Stars vs. Washington Capitals (-125 Favorites)

It’s early, but a case can be made that Jake Oettinger is currently leading the Vezina Trophy race.  Through 5 games, he’s been one of the best goalies in the league.  His metrics, basic and advanced, are far superior to his peers.  His 1.41 GAA is way better than any other goalie in net tonight, as is his .953 save percentage and his 7.17 GSAA.  Like Hart, he’s been great in high dangers chances.  He’s faced 36 high-danger shots and has only let in 2.  Look for Oettinger to get win number 5 tonight vs. the Capitals tonight.

Alex Stalock ($6.7k DK/ $8.4k FD) – Chicago Blackhawks vs. Edmonton Oilers (+180 Underdogs) – DraftKings Specific Play

The Chicago Blackhawks have to be one of the most surprising teams to start the season.  They essentially gutted the team over the summer, leaving some kids and Patrick Kane.  The goaltending of the Blackhawks has been what has kept them afloat so far.  And the play of Stalock has been a big part of that.

Stalock has played in 4 games so far and has been brilliant.  He’s posted a 2.09 GAA, a .938 save percentage, and a 3.65 GSAA.  All three of those metrics are extremely solid.  While the Oilers are a high-powered offense, they are on the back end of a back-to-back set and could have tired legs coming into this matchup.  He is dirt cheap on DK tonight at just $6.7k.  If you’re looking to spend up on offense tonight, Stalock makes for an excellent, but risky choice.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green.

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for Thursday Night! There have been some awesome games this week and that trend should continue tonight. With ten games on this slate, we will have our work cut out for us. Aside from reading the article, don’t forget to check out our NHL DFS Projection Model which is available every morning.

*All odds and player pricing below have been obtained from DraftKings and are accurate as of the time of writing*

Detroit Red Wings (+190) at Boston Bruins (-225) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Montreal Canadiens (+135) at Buffalo Sabres (-155)6.5 Projected Goal Total

Edmonton Oilers (-215) at Chicago Blackhawks (+185) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Minnesota Wild (-120) at Ottawa Senators (+100) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Florida Panthers (-200) at Philadelphia Flyers (+170) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

St. Louis Blues (+140) at Nashville Predators (-165) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Washington Capitals (+110) at Dallas Stars (-130) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Vancouver Canucks (+105) at Seattle Kraken (-125) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Winnipeg Jets (+125) at Los Angeles Kings (-145) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Toronto Maple Leafs (-225) at San Jose Sharks (+190) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Toronto Two “John Tavares ($6,300), William Nylander ($6,000), Nicholas Robertson ($3,500)

In the DFS universe, it’s a known occurence that people tend to gravitate towards earlier games in terms of ownership. Many want some degree of certainty, as well as the ability to watch the game. As a result, I think we can grab some lower ownership than usual on one of the best lines of the night. The Toronto Maple Leafs are in a great late-night spot as they head to San Jose as -225 money line favorites. I will rarely if ever use the full top line as a I normally prefer to just play Auston Matthews as a one off if it comes down to it. They do have good numbers so far this season so get an honorable mention below. Furthermore, it is a homecoming of sorts for Matthews, who hails from the greater Phoenix area so don’t mind him individually here.

However, let’s shift to the second line where he have two elite skaters in William Nylander and John Tavares. All this at a more moderate price. Nylander and Tavares are the two priorities of the three linemates and can even be used as a two-man stack as opposed to the full line. However, Nicholas Robertson is also in play and offers some additional savings. I will probably use the full line to weave in his $3,500 salary and open things up in terms of construction. It’s true that this line has yet to really get going and yet all three skaters are averaging double-digit DraftKings points.

10/27 NHL Favorite Contrarian Line

Los Angeles One “Anze Kopitar ($4,300), Kevin Fiala ($5,100), Adrian Kempe ($4,800)”

Believe or not, the Kings’ top line is leading all NHL lines in goals scored thus far into the season.

They should also be totally off the radar tonight, despite L.A. being -145 home favorites. The Winnipeg Jets has outperformed metrics defensively, so this is certainly an exploitable matchup for this line at sub 10% if not lower ownership. All three skaters share correlation on the Kings top power-play unit as well, which is always a huge bonus for any full line. On top of everything else, they are priced more like an ordinary/subpar team’s second line. Overall, they make for a terrific tournament play this evening.

Additional Lines to Consider

Toronto One – Auston Matthews “$8,500”, Mitchell Marner “$6,500”, Michael Bunting “$3,900”

Florida Two – Sam Bennett “$5,200”, Matthew Tkachuk “$7,900”, Rudolfs Balcers “$2,500”

Defensemen “Goalies covered in Between the Pipes”

Defenseman “high-end” – NONE – Waste of salary

“mid-range” – Drew Doughty – Los Angeles – Lots of minutes, on the top power-play unit, blocking shots. He also makes a lot of sense if using the Kings line mentioned above as he correlates with all of them.

“mid-range #2” – Neal Pionk – Winnipeg – The Kings are better offensively than they are on the other end so I think this is a great spot for Pionk. He is priced under $5,000 much like Doughty. Because of his propensity to shoot on goal more, I’m giving him the nod over teammate Josh Morrisey. Morrisey does have power-play time on the top power-play unit as opposed to second unit, as is Pionk’s case.

“low-end”Justin Holl – Toronto – Cheap and playing for a massive favorite. He also plays on Toronto’s second unit so has correlation with the Leafs line listed above.

10/27 NHL Best Bet

Minnesota Wild/Ottawa Senators – O 6.5 (-130) – DraftKings1 Unit – The Senators are allowing nearly three goals and contest and Minnesota well over four. With both offenses playing so well, this sets up as a shootout.

The Hot Shot makes a rare Tuesday appearance as Jon Love is unfortunately on the bereavement list. Be sure to send him your best wishes. With ten games on tonight’s slate, it’s time to get down to business. Aside from reading the article, don’t forget to check out our NHL Projection Model which is available every morning.

10/25 NHL Main Slate of Games – Beginning 7 p.m. ET

*All odds and player pricing below have been obtained from DraftKings and are accurate as of the time of writing*

Dallas Stars (+125) at Boston Bruins (-145) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

New Jersey Devils (-105) at Detroit Red Wings (-115)6.5 Projected Goal Total

Florida Panthers (-245) at Chicago Blackhawks (+205) – 7 Projected Goal Total

Arizona Coyotes (+190) at Columbus Blue Jackets (-225) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Colorado Avalanche (-115) at New York Rangers (-105) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Minnesota Wild (-175) at Montreal Canadiens (+150) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Buffalo Sabres (+100) at Seattle Kraken (-120) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Tampa Bay Lightning (-115) at Los Angeles Kings (-105) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Vegas Golden Knights (-190) at San Jose Sharks (+160) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Pittsburgh Penguins (+135) at Calgary Flames (-155) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Florida Two “Sam Bennett ($5,600), Matthew Tkachuk ($7,800), Rudolph Balcers ($2,900)

The Florida Panthers are the biggest favorite on the slate at -245, despite playing on the road. In part, it is because they are visiting the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hawks are off to a deceptive 3-2 start. However, aside from the Seth Jones addition, they have been depleted of much of their prior talent across the last few seasons. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews have also lost a step as they continue to age. Furthermore, this is the highest total game on the slate “7” with every other game all set at 6.5. It is a safe assumption that we can expect some goals in this one.

If choosing between the Panthers’ top two lines both have two skaters on Florida’s top power-play unit. Nevertheless, thus far, the second line has put up much better numbers than the first line, as they’re currently tied for a league-leading five full-line goals “as opposed to two”. There is $1,700 savings to be had using Sam Bennett over top-line center Aleksandr Barkov and can apply it towards Matthew Tkachuk, an ostensibly superior player to Sam Reinhart. Finally, Rudolfs Balcers gives us a deep discount at $2,900, just $400 over the minimum salary.

10/25 NHL Favorite Contrarian Line

Columbus One “Gustav Nyquist ($4,100), Boone Jenner ($6,100), Johnny Gaudreau ($7,300)”

Aside from Johnny Gaudreau a.k.a. Johnny Hockey, even in a plus matchup, I wouldn’t expect the Blue Jackets to be “chalk”. That said, as -225 money line favorites, hosting the hapless Arizona Coyotes, Columbus is the second largest favorite on the slate. There’s a 6.5 total here much like in every other game, but most of that should be going the Blue Jackets’ way. All three skaters have additional correlation as members of Columbus’ top power-play unit. Their four full-line goals to date this season aren’t too shabby either, tying them for second in the NHL with nine other lines.

10/25 NHL Additional Lines to Consider

Florida One – Aleksandr Barkov “$7,600”, Sam Reinhart “$6,000”, Carter Verheaghe “$3,600”

Vegas One – Jack Eichel “$5,900”, Chandler Stephenson “$3,500”, Mark Stone “$4,500” (CHEAP)

Defensemen and Goalies

Defenseman “high-end” – Brandon Montour – Florida – Montour has moved up to the first line with Aaron Ekblad’s injury, should see extra minutes, plus he gets time on the second power-play unit. He’s listed here as high-end but salary-wise he is a good $2,000 below some other expensive defensemen.

“mid-range” – Mikhail Sergachev – Tampa Bay – For $4,100, Sergachev has four assists in six games so good value for what many would really consider a low-end price.

“low-end”Damon Severson – New Jersey – Severson is blocking shots as well as grabbing assists so not a bad punt for $3,300.

Goalie “high-end”Adin Hill – Vegas Golden Knights – Excellent 2.00 GAA to start the year and a soft matchup against the Sharks.

“mid-range”Andre Vasilevskiy- Tampa Bay – It’s not tremendous savings but this is the guy widely considered the world’s best goaltender, not much more to say.

“low-end” – Alex Stalock – Chicago – Very strong 2.14 GAA and to expect him to face plenty of shots, that’s perhaps a huge understatement. He is definitely not a cash play but Stalock has tournament-winning upside if you’re fading Florida.

10/25 NHL Best Bet

Boston Bruins 60 Minute Moneyline (+105) – DraftKings1 Unit – The Dallas Stars are off to a strong start so far this season but the Bruins seem to be money at home.

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Saturday Slapshot.   I’ll be focusing on tonight’s nice-sized 9-game main slate of NHL DFS on DraftKings and FanDuel.  We’re now a couple of weeks into the 2022/2023 season and trends are somewhat becoming clearer.  We have some lopsided matchups tonight that we’ll hopefully be able to take full advantage of.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Tristan Jarry ($8.4K DK/$8.6k FD) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets – This is a little bit more than I normally like to spend on my goalie, but you have to love the spot for Tristan Jarry tonight.  Through 3 games so far this season, Jarry’s play has been exceptional.  So far in this young year, he’s sporting a 1.68 GAA and a .952 save %.  While that high of a save % is probably not sustainable, the matchup tonight is a good one for him.

The Blue Jackets’ offense has yet to really click on all cylinders and against a solid Penguins team, I just don’t think they start tonight.  Through 5 games, the Blue Jackets are scoring less than 3 goals a game.  Knowing that I’ll look heavily at Jarry as my starting goalie tonight.

Jake Oettinger ($8k DK/$7.9k FD) vs. Montreal Canadiens – Another goalie that has really started out the season playing really well is Jake Oettinger.  Through his first 3 starts, Oettinger has a GAA of just 1 and a .966 save %.  Again, a save % that high isn’t really sustainable, but with a struggling Canadiens offense Oettinger should be able to continue his solid play.

The Canadiens have also scored less than 3 goals per game to start the year and outside of their top line of Caufield and Suzuki, they have few offensive weapons.  As it stands right now, I do like Oettinger just a smidge better than Jarry due to that extra $400 we’ll be able to save for our offense.

Another goalie that has my interest tonight is Jake Allen of the Canadiens.  I don’t think he’ll get the W tonight, but so far he’s played really well.  He’s had at least 15 DK points in all 3 of his starts this season.

NHL DFS Stacks

Pittsburgh 2 (Malkin, Rust, Zucker) + Jeff Petry vs. Columbus

This has been one of the better lines in the NHL to start the season.  Together as a line, they’ve combined for 4 goals so far and they have an expected goals of 4.5.  No line has a higher expected goals number so far than this line.  With this line, we’ll want to make sure to build around Evgeni Malkin.  He’s been the guy leading the way so far as he has 3 goals and 2 assists through the team’s first 4 games.

We’ll also want to make sure to grab Bryan Rust here.  Through 4 games, he also has 5 points.  He’s second on the team with 8 high danger chances.  Against a poor defensive team in the Blue Jackets that is giving up 4 goals per game, the Penguins should put up a big number tonight.  They’ll do so thanks to their second line.

Washington 1(Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, Sheary) + Orlov vs. Los Angeles

The Capitals have yet to really click this season.  They’re only scoring 3 goals per game, which for an offense like theirs is pretty low.  Their time is coming and it’s going to come at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings.  The Kings so far have been challenged defensively.  Through their first 6 games this season, they’ve given up 4.5 goals per game.  That’s the highest of any team on tonight’s slate. A lot of this has been due to their goaltending has really struggled so far with a combined save % of just 86%.  That’s pretty bad!

Alex Ovechkin so far has just 2 goals on the year.  I wouldn’t be shocked to see him double that number tonight.  He’s still the same old Ovechkin that fires pucks on the net at will.  Through 5 games, he has 19 shots on goal and has also had 18 scoring chances.  His goals will come.

To save some money, I will focus on pairing him with Connor Sheary.  Sheary is just $2.9k on DK.  Being able to get someone that cheap on a top line is rare and we’ll want to take advantage of it.  He’s also been pretty good so far with 3 goals.

Buffalo 1 (Thompson, Skinner, Tuch) + Dahlin vs. Columbus

I’m going to go against the grain a bit with this NHL DFS stack.  Vegas has the Canucks as the favorite in this tilt and has the Sabres at just 2.5 goals tonight.  I disagree with them.  The Canucks have been pretty bad so far.  Through 5 games, they’ve given up at least 4 goals 4 times.  They’re still winless and when all is said and done tonight, I think they’ll still be winless.

My favorite target on this line is Alex Tuch.  He’s been red hot to start the season with 5 goals.  Now I will add that he’s shooting % of 38% on the high end.  But he does have one of the higher expected goals of anyone on the slate tonight.  Against a team that is giving up way more than 4 goals per game, his stellar play should continue.

If you decide to pay up for a defenseman tonight, you’ll want to do so with Rasmus Dahlin.  He’s been great so far in the young season.  Through 4 games, he’s already up to 4 goals and 2 assists.  He’s been firing on the net a ton with 16 shots on goal.  He’s pricy on DK tonight at $6.7k, but he’s essentially been playing like another forward.

Other stacks (Tor 1, Pit 1, Van 1, Vegas 1, Col 2, Cgy 1, Nash 2(very cheap!))

NHL DFS Top Value Defenseman

  • Brayden McNabb – $3.1k on DK – Gets a decent amount of shots and blocks.
  • Dante Fabbro – $2.5k on DK – Has been blocking a decent amount of shots
  • Jordan Harris – $3.2k – Has at least 8 DK points in all but 1 game this season.

Summary

Tonight should be a fun slate of NHL DFS.  I plan on going heavy with the Penguins tonight against a Blue Jackets team that likes to have the lamp light up behind their goaltender.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

After only three games last night, it’s time for a real slate! The Hot Shot returns to break down tonight’s epic twelve-game slate. Aside from reading the article, don’t forget to check out the NHL Projection Model which is available daily every morning.

10/20 NHL Main Slate of Games – Beginning 7 p.m. ET

*All odds and player pricing below obtained from DraftKings *

Anaheim Ducks (+170) at Boston Bruins (-210) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Los Angeles Kings (+150) at Pittsburgh Penguins (-185)6.5 Projected Goal Total

Dallas Stars (+140) at Toronto Maple Leafs (-170) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Nashville Predators (-130) at Columbus Blue Jackets (+105) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

San Jose Sharks (+200) at New York Rangers (-250) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

New Jersey Devils (+110) at New York Islanders (-135) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Arizona Coyotes (+135) at Montreal Canadiens (-165) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Washington Capitals (-105) at Ottawa Senators (-115) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Vancouver Canucks (+140) at Minnesota Wild (-175) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Winnipeg Jets (+140) at Vegas Golden Knights (-170) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Buffalo Sabres (+220) at Calgary Flames (-275) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Carolina Hurricanes (+100) at Edmonton Oilers (-120) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

New York Rangers Two “Artemi Panarin ($6,500), Vincent Trocheck ($5,300), Alexis LaFreniere ($3,200)

As a very outspoken Islanders fan, when I write up the Rangers, people tend to pay attention. I definitely like the top line a lot as they are strong play tonight behind stellar play from Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider with some salary savings sprinkled in via Kappo Kakko. However, point per dollar, give me the second line consisting of the “Breadman” Artemi Panarin, newcomer Vincent Trocheck and the Rangers’ top pick the year after Kakko, Alexis LaFreniere. Through four games, Trocheck has five points “two goals, three assists”, Panarin has a whopping ten points “two goals, eight assists” and finally, LaFreniere has three points “one goal and two assists”. When considering comparative salary against most lines, the NYR second line seems like quite a bargain. Particularly considering their juicy matchup with the Rangers a heavy -250 money line favorite hosting the Sharks.

10/20 NHL Favorite Contrarian Line

Minnesota Two “Joel Eriksson Ek ($5,500), Marcus Foligno ($2,700), Jordan Greenway ($2,500)”

For my contrarian line this week, I might have got a little Wild. After all, you’re either first or you’re last. I might not even use this line in any part of my top line. It’s the sort of line you throw a small dice roll on. However, the deep discount that you get for a second-line skating for a -175 home favorite in a game with a 6.5 total allows for some very creative builds. Joel Eriksson Ek is the relative star of the trio with three points “two goals, one assist” across the Wild’s three games thus far. Eriksson Ek also centers the Minnesota top powerplay unit. Marcus Foligno has two points “one goal, one assist” and does see a little powerplay time on the second powerplay unit. I don’t mind keeping it at two men here and if so Foligno would be my second in behind Eriksson Ek. The exclusion would be Jordan Greenway, who should be making his season debut tonight. Be sure to double-check lines prior to lock. As of the time of writing, Daily Faceoff has Greenway listed on the second line

10/20 NHL Additional Lines to Consider

New York Rangers One – Mika Zibanejad “$7,600”, Chris Krieder “$6,000”, Kappo Kakko “$3,600”

Boston One – David Krejci “$5,900”, David Pastrnak “$8,600”, Taylor Hall “$5,400”

Calgary One – Elias Lindholm “$4,900”, Jonathan Huberdeau “$5,600”, Tyler Toffoli “$5,100”

Top Individual Plays

Centers – Mika Zibanejad – New York Rangers “high-end”, Nazem Kadri – Calgary “mid-range”, Vincent Trocheck – New York Rangers “low-end”

Wings – David Pastrnak – Boston “high-end”, Cole Caufield – Montreal “mid-range”, Mark Stone – Las Vegas “low-end”

Defenders – Adam Fox – New York Rangers “high-end”, Rasmus Andersson – Calgary “mid-range”, Calen Addison – Minnesota “low-end”

Goalies – Igor Shesterkin – New York Rangers “high-end”, Logan Thompson – Las Vegas “mid-range”, Frederik Andersen – Carolina “low-end”

10/20 NHL Best Bet

Ottawa Senators Moneyline (-115) – DraftKings1 Unit – I am a true believer in this Ottawa squad and think this is the spot that brings the Senators back up to .500 and then it’s infinity and beyond.
