NHL DFS

Welcome the NHL DFS Man Advantage for a Monday night. This week have a five-game slate with teams like Edmonton, Carolina, and St. Louis on the slate. There is also a re-match from Saturday night that is intriguing when it normally wouldn’t be. Also on this slate, we have teams like Arizona and Buffalo on the second night of a back-to-back.

NHL Bets:

Check discord on Monday for any potential bets. With trades being made some lines will most likely change.

NHL DFS: Goalies

Goaltending is strange tonight because the goalies from the teams you’d want to play have not been playing well, so while I won’t talk you out of Frederick Andersen or Ville Husso I won’t be writing them up. There are some other, less expensive, options on this slate that might give you an upper hand on the competition if they come through.

  • Thatcher Demko ( @ StL)- I know I am typically alone on this hill since many seem to pick on him whenever they can but I will not. Demko has been up and down most of the season and he is in the middle of another stint like that now. Since the start of March (11 games), Demko is allowing 2.8 goals per game and making 29.5 saves per game to go with his .913 save %.
  • Dustin Tokarski ( @ Chi) – Since Craig Anderson played on Sunday it is safe to assume Tokarski gets the nod in ChiTown on Monday. Tokarski has been better than good in his last three starts with only four goals allowed, averaging 30 saves per game, and a shutout.
  • Philipp Grubauer ( @ LA) – Another goalie that many will never play, myself included, but he has been decent of late. In his last five starts, Grubauer is 3-2 with only 3 goals allowed per game. Listen, this isn’t a cash game play, or even a Single Entry type play, but if you want to take a risk in a GPP on a goalie, you could do worse than Grubauer on Monday.

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

There are a few top lines that I want to build around on Monday, and I am sure they will not surprise anyone

  • Edmonton L1 – Kane – McDavid – Yamamoto Dmen: Bouchard, Ceci, Kulak
  • Carolina L1 – Teravainen – Aho – Jarvis Dmen: DeAngelo, Sjkei, Pesce
  • Washinton L1 – Ovechkin – Kuznetsov – Johansson Dmen: Carlson, Orlov, Schultz

After you decide which line you want to build around, you will need some value pieces to make it work.

Seattle Kraken

Seattle has been averaging 3 goals per game and 32 shots on goal per game in their last ten. I know they aren’t a sexy pick to use on this slate, but there isn’t much to go within the value tier on stacks on Monday. There are a good amount of top lines we should want to get exposure to and Seattle allows that. The Kraken’s top line of Alex Wennberg centering Jared McCann and Jordan Eberle is the best option from Seattle. Now, there is a slight chance that Jaden Schwartz returns to the lineup on Monday so we need to watch for news of that. Their stats don’t jump off the screen at me, but they combine for just $10.3K on DraftKings as a full unit. For more savings, you can replace McCann (highest priced player) with a defenseman from Seattle. Vince Dunn is the best option, but both Adam Larsson and Carson Soucy are near min price on DK and have been playing well.

Yanni Gourde has been the Kraken’s best player of late with four goals in his last five games. Gourde centers the second line with Ryan Donato and Karson Kuhlman. Both are near min price on both sites, but I would prefer to stack Gourde with Dunn and either Eberle or Wennberg for a power-play stack.

Other top-line stacks:

Buffalo L1: Tuch – Thompson – Skinner Dmen: Dahlin, Jokiharju, Samuelsson

Vancouver L2: Pettersson – Horvat – Boeser Dmen: Ekman-Larsson, Schenn, Hughes

Chicago L1: DeBrincat – Strome – Kane Dmen: de Haan, Seth Jones, McCabe

St. Louis L3: Barbashev – Schenn – Kyrou Dmen: Parayko, Faulk, Leddy

St. Louis L1: Saad – O’Reilly – Perron

Los Angeles L2: Moore – Danault – Arvidsson Dmen: Durzi, Stetcher, Maata

Value Stacks:

Buffalo L2: Asplund – Mittlestadt – Olofsson

Chicago L2: Kubalik – Toews – Raddysh

Edmonton L3: Brassard – Nugent-Hopkins – Puljujarvi

Arizona L2: Crouse – Boyd – Kessel Dmen: Mayo, Gostisbehere, Dineen

Carolina L3: Niederreiter – Staal – Fast

Los Angeles L3: Vilardi – Byfield – Kupari

Welcome to latest edition of the Saturday Slapshot where we’ll be focusing on tonight’s 9 game main slate of NHL on DraftKings and FanDuel.  Teams are now at the point where they are jockeying for playoff positions.  Thankfully, hockey is not like the NBA and we rarely see major players sitting out in the tail end of the season

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

Goaltending

James Reimer ($7.9K DK/$7.2k FD) vs. Anaheim Ducks – Reimer is far from a sexy name, but the man’s been getting the job done and won’t cost us an arm and a leg, especially if you’re playing NHL DFS on FanDuel where he’s only $7.2k.  If we look at Reimer’s play of late, it hasn’t been that bad as he back-to-back wins with one of them coming against a solid Flames team. Reimer hasn’t allowed more than 3 goals in more than a month and with the Ducks’ offense now anemic, he stands a good chance of being one of the higher scoring goalies on the night.

Sergei Bobrovsky ($8.5k DK/$8.8k FD) vs. Ottawa Senators – If you find yourself with some extra cash laying around tonight, Bob should be your guy.  He’s riding a 4 game winning streak and gets to face a Senators team scoring just 2.3 goals per game over the past month.  With how powerful of a lineup the Panthers have built, I just don’t see a scenario tonight where Bob doesn’t get at least the W tonight.  He’s probably more suited though for cash games if you’re a cash game player.

Stacks

We have some pretty clear spots for offense tonight.  Toronto is in as good of a spot as they can be against a Canadiens team giving up more than 3.5 goals per game over the past month.  The top line for Toronto will be extremely popular tonight, and rightfully so.  I’m not going to write them up as a stack because they are an obvious play.  They are just super expensive.  My goal with my top 3 stacks tonight will be to find a way to be a little different than your competition in tournaments.

Montreal 1 (Suzuki, Caufield, Anderson) + Petry vs. Toronto

This game between 2 historic Canadian franchises has the makings of a high-scoring slate.  We already know what the Maple Leafs can do on offense, but did you know that of all the teams playing tonight, no team is giving up more goals per game than the Leafs over the past month?  That’s right, and tonight they turn over the crease to Erik Kallgren who met Mr. Regression in his last NHL start.

This top-line for Montreal is pretty good and pretty cheap.  MSL has really tapped into the talent of Caufield as he has 4 goals in his last 5 games and has a very bright future in the NHL.  The combo of Suzuki and Caufield will cost just a shade over $10k over on DK tonight.  That same combo has combined for over 30 scoring chances in their last 5.  They may go overlooked on the slate tonight, but they should do well.

Minnesota 1 (Hartman, Kaprizov, Zuccarello) vs. Columbus

Absolutely love this spot for the Wild tonight.  The Wild really haven’t been blowing away the competition of late, but they are in a great spot tonight.  Columbus is giving up 4 goals per game over the past month and will more than likely have Berube in net tonight.  On the year, Berube has a 3.25 GAA a the NHL level.  Although he has a small sample size, he doesn’t have a single game giving up less than 3 goals.

My core with the Wild tonight will be Hartman and Kaprizov as Zuc is in a little bit of a funk with his game offensively right now.  Hartman and Kaprizov have combined for 6 goals and 10 points in their last 5 games.  They should be able to put up a few goals tonight against a poor defensive team.

Florida 2 (Huberdeau, Duclair, Bennett) vs. Ottawa

I’ve actually used Forsberg this season more than I’ve stacked against him.  He’s been extremely solid this year.  That said, he’s in for a tough task tonight.  This Florida team is stacked from top to bottom.  Their top 3 lines can all take over a game.  Tonight I’m going to go with their second line.  Although their top line is one of the best in the game, Barkov is expensive and isn’t exactly playing his best hockey of late.

This second line has been really good.  Over their last 5 games, they’ve combined for nearly 40 scoring chances and a handful of goals.  While Bennett is solid, my core will be Huberdeau and Duclair.  They are the guys with the offensive prowess and should do well against Ottawa.

Other stacks (Tor 1 and 2, Florida 1 and 3, Edm 1, Cgy 1, SJ 1)

Top Value Defenseman

  • Jeff Petry – $4k on DK – Keep an eye on his status as he’s a GTD, but always good for shots and blocks.
  • Alexander Romanov – $2.9k on Dk – 4 out of his last 5 games he’s had double digit points
  • Jaycob Megna – $2.5k on DK and has 16 blocked shots in his last 5
  • Vince Dunn – $3.4k on DK – becoming a bigger part of the offense in Seattle

Summary

There should be a ton of offense on tonight’s slate.  Toronto should score a ton of goals and although they aren’t in my top stacks section, they are 100% in play.  I just wanted to be a bit different since they will be chalky.  Florida should also score a ton of goals tonight.  Don’t sleep on Edmonton either tonight as they are facing a Calgary team that played last night.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

It’s Friday! You know what that means…another Friday Night Forecheck! We have five games on the slate tonight, with a few interesting matchups. Let’s find the best NHL DFS picks for DraftKings and FanDuel. Good luck!

Goalies

Jacob Markstrom – Calgary Flames: The Flames host Arizona tonight in what should be a dominant game for them. The Coyotes have been scoring a little more of late, but they also bleed goals. With the way Markstrom has been playing, he should be in line for a nice night against a poor Coyotes team.

Pavel Francouz – Colorado Avalanche: The Avalanche host the Flyers tonight in what should be an ‘easy’ win. The Flyers have struggled to string wins together, and have been especially bad on the road over their last five road games. During that stretch, they have only scored 2.6 goals per game.

High Risk GPP Goalie Pick – Igor Shesterkin – New York Rangers: Our friend Igor has burned us recently, as he was shaky over the last few starts. Tonight, he faces a Pittsburgh team that looks like they are getting primed for the playoffs. For that reason, this is a high risk, high upside play. This game looks like it will be a grind it out affair that will be tightly contested. The shot volume should be good for DFS, and on home ice, Igor should be a little more steady.

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Calgary Flames Power Play – Elias Lindholm/Johnny Gaudreau/Matthew Tkachuk/Tyler Toffoli/Rasmus Andersson: The Flames’ power play is in a fantastic spot tonight against one of the worst penalty killing teams in the league. This setup is essentially the top line, and Toffoli on the top line is very, very interesting. Either way you slice it, this unit should be in for a big night.

Colorado Avalanche Power Play – Nathan MacKinnon/Nazem Kadri/Valeri Nichushkin/Mikko Rantanen/Cale Makar: Playing the power play unit in this spot is how we can get access to both top lines in very good spots. The Flyers come into Colorado tonight, on the second half of a traveling back to back. Bad Flyers team, plus they may be tired, means a big opportunity for this well-oiled Colorado machine.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Winnipeg Jets 2 – Pierre-Luc Dubois/Kyle Connor/Evgeny Svechnikov/Josh Morrissey: This line is set up for a nice night tonight against the Blue Jackets. They should see the majority of the second line in a top six matching scheme. The game overall should be pretty high scoring, as we have Merzlikins vs. Comrie tonight. For those into the sports betting, o6.5 for this game seems like a good bet, and is -125 on DraftKings Sportsbook.

Calgary Flames 3 – Calle Jarnkrok/Andrew Mangiapane/Blake Coleman/Noah Hanifin: This third line for the Flames is also in a very, very good spot, and is a great way to get low owned exposure to a massive implied total. They also all skate on the second power play unit. Of course, being a depth line, there is a bunch of risk here. With their value, though, they don’t need much to pay off and then some.

Washington Capitals 1 – Evgeny Kuznetsov/Alex Ovechkin/Marcus Johansson/John Carlson: The Caps head to Buffalo tonight to face the Sabres and Dustin Tokarski. While Tokarski has decent numbers over his last five, he is not what we would consider a top tier goalie. Washington should be able to put together some scoring tonight.

Buffalo Sabres 1 – Tage Thompson/Alex Tuch/Jeff Skinner/Rasmus Dahlin: The Sabres’ top line is in play simply for the goalie matchup. Samsonov for the Caps is not a scary goalie, and this top line has been surprisingly decent this year.

Columbus Blue Jackets 1 – Jack Roslovic/Gustav Nyquist/Patrik Laine/Zach Werenski: We can also consider the top line for the Blue Jackets tonight, especially since this game looks like it will be higher scoring.

Tonight, we have one of the largest slates of the week. It will be important to disregard ownership and instead hone in on a few spots which are highlighted below.

3/24 NHL Main Slate of Games – Beginning 7 p.m. ET

Tampa Bay Lightning (-110) at Boston Bruins (-110) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total

Dallas Stars (+160) at Carolina Hurricanes (-185) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total

Detroit Red Wings (+185) at New York Islanders (-230) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total

Florida Panthers (-245) at Montreal Canadiens (+205) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Philadelphia Flyers (+220) at St. Louis Blues (-275) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Vancouver Canucks (+180) at Minnesota Wild (-225) – 6 Projected Goal Total

San Jose Sharks (+205) at Edmonton Oilers (-255) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Ottawa Senators (+225) at Winnipeg Jets (-285) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Nashville Predators (-110) at Vegas Golden Knights (-110) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Chicago Blackhawks (+155) at Los Angeles Kings (-190) – 6 Projected Goal Total

3/24 NHL Favorite Lines Per Dollar

Top Line – Edmonton One “Evander Kane ($6,200), Connor McDavid ($9,000), Kailer Yamamoto ($4,100)

Making a consecutive return to the top of the Hot Shot rankings is Edmonton One. A lot of the other bigger money line favorites either have a lot more disbursement among their lines or are in lower total games. Point per dollar they continue to offer us a solid return and all three skaters share correlation on the top power-play unit. Not surprisingly, they remain among the top lines in the NHL in terms of goals scored over their last ten games.

They have been hot and have a juicy matchup hosting the Sharks as -255 favorites. This is a ten-game slate so within that threshold they will be chalky but with ownership dispersed enough, not that chalky.

Secondary Line – Winnipeg One “Blake Wheeler ($5,700), Nikolaj Ehlers ($6,300), Mark Scheifele ($6,300)”

As you can see from the graphic above, the core of this line has been fairly hot as well and should be higher up on that list, tying Calgary One for 2nd in the NHL in SATF which includes total shot periods, with 121 across that span. Much like the Oilers, the Jets are a huge favorite against a hapless team, coming in as even shorter favorites at -285 against the Ottawa Senators. Making things even better, it is Nikolaj Ehlers on this line and not Paul Statsny, who I have been routinely fading for this last decade or so. Ehlers does not share power play correlation with the other two skaters on the top power-play line, but I guess you can’t have everything. With gas can goalie Anton Forsberg projected to start for Ottawa as of the time of writing and a six total “only one 6.5 on this slate”, Winnipeg One makes sense for a secondary line.

3/24 NHL Honorable Mention: Any of three Minnesota Wild lines

It’s rare I write up all three of a team’s lines but all three have been putting up their fill of statistics. Here I have everything sorted over the last ten games specifically for SATF.

In terms of SATF, all three primary Wild lines are in the top twenty in the NHL, wow! Minnesota is another one of the big home favorites at -225, facing the Canucks who come in on the 2nd half of a back-to-back. My suggestion would be to use the line that makes the most sense in terms of your remaining salary. If I were making 5 to 10 lines I’d get some exposure to all three.

Top Defender

Tyson Barrie – Edmonton Oilers – $4,600 – It would be easy to just go back to Roman Josi here. However, now over $9,000 he basically dictates the rest of your build. I think using him makes more sense on a smaller slate as opposed to a big Thursday slate. So, we can roll with Barrie who enjoys the same juicy matchup as Edmonton One mentioned above. He has slowed his roll over his last two games but previously had four straight double-digit DraftKings point games.

Top Goalie

Juuse Saros – Nashville Predators – $7,800 – There is not much going on at all in the cheap range tonight so the lowest I would look is at Juuse Saros. He has not had quite the same form overall since the all-star break but has been a bit better recently. Vegas has not had the season they wished for but here in a pick-em game, they should be able to put some shots on net, hopefully, lots of bad ones!

3/24 NHL Best Bet

Minnesota Wild 60 Minute Moneyline (-135) DraftKings – As noted above, this is a team with three full lines clicking right now and they will be rested as opposed to the Canucks. Vancouver might have had a thrill on night one of the back-to-back beating the Avalanche. However, the only thrill tonight will be Kirill the Thrill!

Another Monster NHL Tuesday slate

It’s Tuesday, so you know what that means! Another gigantic NHL DFS slate of games. We have eleven games on the schedule so there’s no time for me to ramble on, let’s just get into it!

NHL DFS: Goalies

Anton Forsberg:

Forsberg has been one of the hottest goalies in the NHL over the past 5 weeks, but for some reason both sites have him priced extremely low ($6.8K/$7K). Looking at his DK numbers, Forsberg has only scored lower than 12.5 DKFP once in his last 10 starts. During this span, Forsberg is averaging 31.5 saves per game and has a .924 save %. Forsberg also has hit the 35+ ave bonus four times in 10 games. The Islanders are semi-risky to play goalies against because they aren’t a high shot on goal team, but I feel like this is a must-play because of the upside for the incredibly low price tag.

There are three high-priced goalies that I also have a lot of interest in on Tuesday if you don’t trust Forsberg and want to pay up. Igor Shesterkin, Jacob Markstrom, and Tristan Jarry are all in plus matchups on Tuesday against New Jersey, San Jose, and Columbus respectively. All three are expensive, but with eleven games on this slate, you can easily find the value needed to pay up for these goalies.

Other Options: Connor Hellebuyck, Karel Vejmelka, Carter Hart (Cheap, has two solid starts back-to-back, and is playing Detroit)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

There are A LOT of teams that stand out on this slate and of course, we can’t play them all. I will rank their top lines a little bit further down, first though, I want to give you my overlooked value team to pair with these top teams.

Philadelphia Flyers:

This is so hard for me to do, but I am going to write up the Flyers as a great play on this slate. My thought is that people will gravitate towards the bigger, better teams and overlook potentially the highest-scoring team on this slate. Detroit has been absolute trash defensively over the last month. Dating back to February 14th (13 games), the Red Wings are allowing 5 goals per game and 36.5 shots on goal per game. Meanwhile, the Flyers have scored 3+ goals four times in their last nine games.

The Flyers made a couple of deals on Monday so their lines will be different on Tuesday from the ones that skated Sunday. We can assume that the line of Travis Konecny, Kevin Hayes, and Joel Farabee will stay together for this game. Outside of Cam Atkinson, these three have been the Flyers’ best forwards. Both Farabee and Hayes are averaging a point per game in their last five, and Konecny has four assists and is averaging nearly 4 shots on goal per game in his last five. Speaking of Atkinson, he has eight points in his last eight games and has 29 shots on goal. Atkinson and James van Riemsdyk will have a new center with Brassard being traded.

Owen Tippett was part of the Giroux deal from Florida and was in the lineup on Sunday, it’ll be interesting to see who he skates with now on Tuesday. I will update the Flyers lines in discord on Tuesday when or if they have a morning skate. As for defensemen, both Travis Sanheim and Rasmus Ristolainen are great plays and Cam York is the best value dman from Philly.

Top Stacks:

Nashville Predators L1: Forsberg-Granlund-Duchene. Dmen to use: Josi, Fabbro, Carrier

Pittsburgh Penguins L1: GuentzelCrosby-Rust. Dmen to use: Letang, Matheson, Marino

New York Rangers L2: Vatrano-Strome-Panarin. Dmen to use: Fox, Trouba, Miller

Calgary Flames L1: Gaudreau-Lindholm-Toffoli. Dmen to use: Andersson, Tanev, Zadorov

Arizona Coyotes L1: Schmaltz-Boyd-Keller. Dmen to use: Mayo, Stralman

Winnipeg Jets L2: Connor-Dubois-Ehlers. Dmen to use: Morrisey, Schmidt, Stanley

Value Bin:

Tampa Bay Lightning L3: Hagel-Colton-Paul. Dmen to use: Hedman, Sergachev, McDonagh

Carolina Hurricanes L3: Lorentz-Staal-Fast. Dmen to use: Skjei, Pesce, Bear

Ottawa Senators L2: Formenton-Stutzle-Brown. Dmen to use: Brannstrom. Zaitsev

Calgary Flames L3: Coleman-Jarnkrok-Mangiapane

Dallas Stars L2: Peterson-Seguin-Gurianov. Dmen to use: Lindell, Suter, Klingberg

Seattle Kraken L3: Donskoi-Gourde-Donato. Dmen to use: Dunn, Larsson, Soucy

Welcome the NHL DFS Man Advantage for a Monday night. We have a four-game slate on the schedule with the big matchup being MacKinnon vs McDavid in Colorado. Something else to note is Monday is the NHL trade deadline so there will be an influx of trades coming down throughout the day. If you plan on playing this slate you need to pay attention to Twitter and discord because some of these plays and line combos are bound to change. I will do my best to post any changes and trades I see, but do yourself a favor and try to follow along if you can.

NHL Bets:

Check discord on Monday for any potential bets. With trades being made some lines will most likely change.

NHL DFS: Goalies

At the time of writing, there are no confirmed goalies, so I will just be giving you a couple of spots I like, but make sure to check in discord for follow up and goalie starts on Monday.

Whoever starts in goal for the Bruins on Monday is one of my top plays on the slate. Montreal has lost four of their last six and they’re averaging over 31 shots on goal in that span.

My top goalie on the slate is Juuse Saros on the road in Anaheim, but that’s if he starts. Saros is not guaranteed to start because the Preds do play on Tuesday night as well. We will have to wait and see who starts, but if it’s Saros, then it’s all systems go!

Outside of Saros and the Bruins starter, I like whoever is in net for Colorado and Laurent Brossoit. I know he has been bad, but Minnesota has not been good either. The Wild have lost 8 of 13 games and are averaging 34 shots on goal per game and only scoring 3.2 goals per game.

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

On a small slate, the Avalanche is going to be a very popular team to pay up for so my top overall stack may go under-owned. Don’t completely write off the Avs, there are some ways to use them on the cheap. Both Josh Manon and Erik Johnson are cheap on defense and offer some upside via blocked shots and shots on goal. Up front, you can look at both Andre Burakosvsky and Valerie Nichushkin as cheap plays and both have points in back-to-back games.

Nashville Predators:

My top line on this slate is the first line for the Predators, specifically Filip Forsberg and Matt Duchene. While there might be better plays, none of them give you the value that Forsberg and Duchene do. I mentioned McDavid and MacKinnon in the open, but they will make you break the bank. Both Forsberg and Duchene are on fire right now and are the two players I want to build around. Duchene is currently on a nine-game point streak where he is averaging nearly 2 points per game (17 points). During his point streak, Duchene has scored nine goals, has four multi-goal games, and six multi-point games.

As for Forsberg, he is on his own six-game point streak where he is averaging 2 points per game (12 Points). Forsberg has four multi-point games during his streak to go along with six goals. There are three other pieces you can use to make this a three-man stack. If you want to pay down to complete the stack, both Mikael Granlund and Ryan Johansen are cheap. Granlund is the least productive of this group with only five points in his last 8 and eleven shots on goal. Johansen has nine points in his last ten and plays on the power-play with Forsberg and Duchene.

Lastly, you can pay up for Roman Josi on defense. I know he is incredibly expensive, but I think you can find the value to make Josi work. Josi is currently on his own nine-game point streak with 22 points in that span, nearly 2.5 points per game (2.4). Josi also is riding a four-game streak of 3+ points per game. Dante Fabbro, Mattias Ekholm, and Alexandre Carrier are three other cheap defensemen you can use to finish out stacks.

Other top stacks:

Boston Bruins L2: Pastrnak-Haula-Hall – Dmen to use: McAvoy, Reilly, Clifton

Colorado Avalanche L1: Nichushkin-MacKinnon-Rantanen – Dmen to use: Makar, Johnson, Toews

Montreal Canadiens L1: Caufield-Suzuki-Anderson – Dmen to use: Petry, Kulak, Wideman

** Pay extra attention to any news about the Canadiens as they are sellers and some of their top players could move on Monday **

Minnesota Wild L1 and L2 – Dmen to use: Dumba, Spurgeon, Goligoski

Edmonton Oilers L1: Kane-McDavid-Yamamoto – Dmen to Use: Nurse, Barrie, Ceci

Value Stacks:

Boston Bruins L3: Smith-Coyle-Frederic

Vegas Golden Knights L2: Carrier-Stephenson-RoyDmen to use: Pietrangelo, Coghlan, Whitecloud

Anaheim Ducks L2: Comtois-Henrique-Terry – Dmen to use: Fowler, Shattenkirk, Sustr

Today’s article is going to focus on tonight’s 5 game NHL main slate on DraftKings and FanDuel.  With the trade deadline just days away, we’re going to want to keep a continued look at lineups up until the game starts.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

Goaltending

I’ll start by saying goalie tonight is horrendous.  No goalie is safe, but we do need to pick one, so let’s dive in and try to find one.

Andre Vasilevskiy ($8.2K DK/$8.5k FD) vs. New York Rangers – I used a goalie against the Rangers last weekend and it ended up burning me as the Rangers exploded for a bunch of goals.  I just don’t see it happening tonight vs. a much better goalie in Vasilevskiy and a much better defensive team in the Lightning.

After a little bit of a rough stretch for Vasilevskiy, he has back to back games giving up just 1 goal in each.  Rangers struggle to score goals at time, as evidenced by their 1 goal game against the Islanders on Thursday.  Look for them to struggle again tonight against a stout team and goalie.

Alex Nedeljkovic ($7.6k DK/$7.3k FD) vs. Seattle Kraken – This is a high risk, high reward pick tonight.  It’s tough to stomach playing Nedeljkovic, but he gets a great matchup and showed some life in his last game against the Canucks with a shutout.  Seattle is a team that really struggles to score goals.

Over the last month they’re averaging just 2.25 goals per game.  Not a good mark and it’s something that we can be somewhat confident in attacking. While this season has been a struggle for Nedeljkovic, he got back on track the other night and the matchup tonight should help build his confidence back up.

Stacks

Nashville 1 (Johansen, Forsberg, Duchene) vs. Toronto

The hockey world has so far fallen in love with Kallgren. Through his first 3 games played, he’s been “brilliant” allowing just 3 goals.  While he’s been great, tonight will be his first taste of road hockey.  He also has some metrics that show he may be playing with fire.  So far, he’s giving up a ton of rebounds.  At some point, giving up that many rebounds is going to bite him.

I do think that Nashville gets to him tonight and this top line is where I want to go.  The duo of Duchene and Forsberg has been great of late, with 9 goals and 20 points in their last 5.  They are clicking right now and with the matchup tonight, they’re my top stack.  I know Vegas has the Predators at just 2.25 goals tonight, but they are wrong on this one.

Montreal 1 (Suzuki, Caufield, Armia) + Petry vs. Ottawa

Ottawa will be giving Forsberg a breather tonight and going with Gustavsson in net.  On the year, Gustavsson has a poultry 3.68 goals against average.  He’s played sparing over the last few months, but when he’s been in net, it’s been good for the other team.

Caufield and Suzuki have been playing very well together recently.  Over their last 5 games, they’ve combined for 8 goals and 12 points.  They also have more 30 scoring chances between them.  On DK, Caufield is still somehow below $5k and it just seems like a mispricing.  He has 3 straight games of at least 18 DK points and if he continues with that tonight like he should, he makes for a great value.   Another great value on this Canadiens squad is Jeff Petry at just $4.1k.  He’s been over 14 DK points in each of his last 4 thanks to his shots plus blocks average of 6.4.  My core with the Habs will be Suzuki, Caufield, and Petry.

Detroit 1 (Larkin, Namestnikov, Raymond) vs. Seattle

In his last 7 games of action, Grubauer hasn’t given up less than 3 goals in any game.  On the year he has a goals-against average over 3.20.  That’s a number I really want to attack tonight.  It’s been a bit of a struggle for Larkin of late as he just 1 goal in his last 10 games.  What has me motivated to play him tonight is that he’s still shooting the puck a healthy amount, with an average of 2.5 per game over his last 5.  I think he bounces back in a big way tonight vs. a poor team.  I plan on pairing him with Raymond who is having a pretty successful rooking campaign, with 19 goals and 27 assists.  Over his last 5, Raymond has 3 goals and stands a very good chance to add to that number tonight.  Detroit has the potential in this matchup to be one of the highest-scoring teams on the slate.

Toronto is always in play, but just not one of my top stacks against a team Nashville.  Saros struggled against the Philly the other night, but that’s not the norm for him.  His superb goaltending can limit the upside of the Maple Leafs.

Other stacks (Ott 1 and 2, Mon 3, Tor 1 and 2, Cgy 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Jeff Petry – $4.1k on DK – 14 shots and 18 blocks over his last 5, lock him in
  • Roman Josi – Playing unreal right now, 10 assists in his last 5.  If you can afford him, play him.
  • Mattias Ekholm – $3.7k on DK and has 16 shots over his last 5 to go with 5 blocks.  Great Value
  • Adam Fox
  • Travis Hamonic
  • Moritz Seider
  • TJ Brodie

Vegas

Vegas has Nashville at just 2.25 goals tonight. They should smash that number

Summary

Tonight’s looking like a fun slate.  On some of these expected goal numbers, I really think Vegas got it wrong.  2.25 for Nashville vs. Toronto and 2.25 for Detroit vs. Seattle are numbers that just seem way off.

For tonight’s Friday Night Forecheck, we have six games on the slate. Here’s a fun fact about this slate: half of the teams tonight are on the second half of a back to back. Let’s find the best NHL DFS picks for DraftKings and FanDuel. Good luck!

Goalies

Jacob Markstrom – Calgary Flames: The Flames will be hosting the Buffalo Sabres tonight, which should be a great matchup for them. The Sabres are not giving up a ton, and have been playing competitive enough to make this a viable play. Markstrom should be a top goalie on the night, and we should be able to target him for cash games.

Darcy Kuemper – Colorado Avalanche: Even though Kuemper has had an up and down season, he should be able to take care of business tonight against the Sharks. The Sharks have only been scoring 2.2 goals per game over their last five home games. Because of that, we should feel pretty comfortable with Darcy in net.

Sergei Bobrovsky/Spencer Knight – Florida Panthers: The Panthers head to Anaheim tonight to take on the struggling Ducks. Because they are on a back to back, we may not know who will start for them until warmups. However, since the Ducks have been struggling to score lately, we can play either of these guys tonight and feel pretty good about it. Keep in mind, Knight is a little riskier than Bob, but still a good play.

High Risk GPP Goalie Pick – Antti Raanta – Carolina Hurricanes: The Hurricanes play host to the Capitals tonight in what should be a very good Eastern Conference battle. This game should be a high event game that produces a lot of shots and chances. Because of those reasons, we can use Raanta as a GPP play. He may not be the best goalie on the slate, numbers wise, but he should face a lot of shots. With that, he also gets the Caps on the second leg of a traveling back to back. The upside here is interesting for a GPP play.

Lines to Build Around

These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Florida Panthers Power Play – Aleksander Barkov/Sam Reinhart/Jonathan Huberdeau/Anthony Duclair/Aaron Ekblad: Go figure that this is a top play tonight, right? The Cats have been flying high this season, and there is no reason it will slow down tonight. The Panthers head to Anaheim to take on the Ducks and John Gibson, who has really let the wheels fall off this season. We can expect a lot of scoring from the Panthers tonight, which is why we want to target the power play. Doing so will get you access to the top two lines, who are both in prime spots.

Calgary Flames 1 – Elias Lindholm/Johnny Gaudreau/Matthew Tkachuk/Rasmus Andersson: As we mentioned above, the Flames host the Sabres tonight. On home ice, over their last five games, the Flames have been scoring 4 goals per game. The Sabres, on the other hand, have been giving up 4.2 goals per game over their last five road games. This seems like a recipe for success. We also know that the goalie situation is very shaky in Buffalo, so it is all systems go for us to play Calgary tonight. You can also consider the depth lines, but keep in mind, Jarnkrok may make his Flames debut. As a result, the Flames may change up the lines a little bit, so be sure to keep an eye on the news.

High Risk Lines

These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Boston Bruins 1 – Erik Haula/Taylor Hall/David Pastrnak/Charlie McAvoy: The Bruins’ top line is actually their second line from before Bergeron went out. That’s ok, though, because this line is in a great spot. They head to Winnipeg tonight to take on the Jets and Hellebuyck, who has been very inconsistent this year. Because this game has a potential to be higher scoring, we can definitely give this line a look. If Bergeron should come back, you can definitely pivot back to the Marchand/Bergeron/Debrusk line.

Carolina Hurricanes 3 – Jordan Staal/Nino Niederreiter/Jesper Fast: The third line for the Canes hard matches the opposing top line when they are on home ice. In other words, the matching will set this line up for a matchup against the Ovechkin line. While they are a defensive line, the Staal line still generates a decent number of high danger chances. The Washington top line is talented, but they also give up a decent number of high danger chances, so this line has a good chance to get on the board tonight.

Colorado Avalanche 1 – Nathan MacKinnon/Valeri Nichushkin/Mikko Rantanen/Cale Makar: The top line for the Avalanche is almost always in play. The Avs are in a good spot tonight against Adin Hill and the Sharks. This line should see the top line in a very nice matchup.

Ottawa Senators 2 – Nick Paul/Connor Brown/Alex Formenton: The second line for Ottawa is not one that you think of when you think of high powered offense. However, the numbers for this line look very good. They are worth a look in deeper GPP contests.

This article focuses on 3/17 NHL Picks for both DraftKings Sportsbook and DraftKings Daily Fantasy for tonight’s slate.

3/17 NHL Main Slate of Games – Beginning 7 p.m. ET

Carolina Hurricanes (-105) at Toronto Maple Leafs (-115) – 6 Projected Goal Total

New York Islanders (+120) at New York Rangers (-140) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total

Nashville Predators (-175) at Philadelphia Flyers (+150) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Dallas Stars (-205) at Montreal Canadiens (+175) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Washington Capitals (-200) at Columbus Blue Jackets (+170) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Detroit Red Wings (+165) at Vancouver Canucks (-205) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Buffalo Sabres (+210) at Edmonton Oilers (-265) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Pittsburgh Penguins (-110) at St. Louis Blues (-110) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Florida Panthers (-130) at Vegas Golden Knights (+110) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

San Jose Sharks (+150) at Los Angeles Kings (-170) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total

3/17 NHL Favorite Lines Per Dollar

Top Line – Edmonton One “Evander Kane, Connor McDavid, Kailer Yamamoto”

Edmonton stands out as the biggest money line favorite at -265, in one of three 6.5 total games on this ten-game slate. Therefore, it may come as no surprise they are the starting point/chalk on tonight’s slate. With three skaters on the Oilers’ top power-play unit, the top line makes the most sense. If you wanted to run a two-man stack instead, Evander Kane at $6,900 would be the man to leave out. Kailer Yamamoto is a steal at $3,600 with goals in three straight games.

At only in a five-way tie for 16th in terms of goals created by the line over their last ten games, I think that Edmonton One can improve on that total tonight.

Secondary Line – Washington One “Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Conor Sheary”

Recently the Capitals’ top line has gone relatively cold by their standards. However, as illustrated below “with Wilson instead of Sheary” this has been one of the top lines in the NHL over the course of the season.

Tonight, Washington has a terrific matchup as a -200 favorite in a 6.5 total game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. With salary restraints, you cannot combine them in full with Edmonton One. However, I do expect Ovi to be popular and the full line a viable pivot off of chalkier Edmonton, not that ownership will matter much at all on a ten-game slate.

3/17 NHL Honorable Mention: Carolina Three “Jordan Staal, Nino Niederreiter, Jesper Fast”

They might not see as much ice time as one would wish, but as you can see from the graphic above, have been impressive all season. Furthermore, as you can see below, they have nine goals over their last ten games, good for a tie for fourth with lines like Calgary and Chicago One. Considering their ultra-cheap prices ($2,500 for Fast, $3,400 for Niederreiter, and $3,100 for Staal) they make for a nice line to use as a pairing if mass multiple entering and looking to go stars and scrubs in a few. You certainly don’t need to play all three skaters either. More on the Hurricanes specific matchup and the game itself below under Best Bet.

Top Defender

Roman Josi – Nashville Predators – $8,200 – He’s expensive so won’t fit into many builds but with some of the monster games he’s been having lately, it’s hard not to rank him first. If building in contrarian fashion with cheap attackers, I certainly prefer him to the guys in the $6,000 and above range.

Top Goalie

Igor Shesterkin – New York Rangers – $7,900 – This one pains me personally but in a 5.5 total game, hosting the Islanders, Shesterkin makes a lot of sense. He is coming off back-to-back poor games but still has stellar numbers on the season with a 2.07 GAA and .938 sv %. This, unfortunately, feels like a get-right spot for him, as he looks to grab the win for a Rangers team heading in a different direction this season than the Islanders.

3/17 NHL Best Bet

Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline (-105) DraftKings – It is already confirmed that Erik Kallgren will be in the net again for the Leafs. He was fantastic his first time out but unless he catches lightning in a bottle, he has allowed 3.02 GAA with a .904 save % across 26 games in the AHL this season. Furthermore, Auston Matthews remains suspended for Toronto. That’s enough for me in an even-money game featuring a strong Carolina team.

Another Monster NHL Tuesday slate

It’s Tuesday so that means another gigantic slate of games in the NHL tonight. We have eleven games on the schedule so there’s no time for me to ramble on, let’s just get into it!

NHL DFS: Goalies

Cash game/Single Entry
  1. Darcy Kuemper/Pavel Francouz (@ LA): Whoever starts for the Av’s on Tuesday is my top play in net. Los Angeles does have some firepower, but they are not an offensive juggernaught. Since the start of February, LA has averaged 3.1 goals per game (15 games), but they are averaging 34.6 shots on goal during that same stretch. I like the odds of a 35+ save performance and win for the Av’s goalies on Tuesday.
  2. Igor Shesterkin (vs Anh): Anaheim has been just brutal during their four game road trip, losing all four games. During this losing streak, Anaheim has scored just eight goals and has allowed an average of 32 saves per game.
  3. Sergei Bobrovsky (@ SJ): Another expensive goalie in another great spot. San Jose is pathetic offensively, averaging just 2.3 goals per game in their last 13 games. The only worrisome thing about the Sharks is that they also don’t shoot much so the save opportunities are limited for Bob in this game.

Other Options: Linus Ullmark (Bos), Thatcher Demko (Van), Mikko Koskinen (Edm)

GPP Plays
  1. Ilya Sorokin (@ Was): In his last nine starts Sorokin is 6-1-2 with just 16 goals allowed for a 1.77 GAA. During that same nine game stretch, Sorokin is also averaging just under 30 saves per game (29.4). I know Washington can be a dangerous team offensively, but with how good Sorokin is I am willing to take that chance on Tuesday.
  2. Connor Hellebuyck (vs VGK): Vegas has been reeling of late, losing seven of their last ten games. During this horrid stretch of games, the Golden Knight have averaged just 2.3 goals per game while allowing 34.9 saves per game. Hellebuyck has had a rough season, but this is a matchup that I just can’t ignore.

Other Options: Sam Montembault (Mtl), Tristan Jarry (Pit), Jake Oettinger (Dal)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

When it comes to a slate like this, there is no need to be cute or worry about ownership. We have 11 games, 22 teams, and about 198 forwards in play on this slate. Ownership will not be an issue. You can go ahead and build lineups with the top lines that we love to play, Colorado, Pittsburgh, Florida, and Edmonton. You can also stack the Dallas and Toronto game because we know how porous the Leafs D has been. All those teams’ top lines are in play and will be in my lineups most likely. The issue will be how do you fit them into your lineups together. A couple of those teams have some decent value plays to stack, mainly Florida, but outside of the Panthers, I don’t want much of the value from those teams. My goal today will be to point out a few of the best value stacks to go with the lines we love to play.

Boston Bruins Line 3 vs Chicago:

Trent Frederic/Charlie Coyle/Craig Smith

Of course, the Bruins’ top two lines are in play tonight, but those lines have not been nearly as productive as this line and I would prefer to stack the top lines mentioned above over them. Boston’s third line has been on a roll lately and I don’t see the Blackhawks slowing them down. Craig Smith has eight points in his last five games, seven of which have been goals. Both Coyle and Frederic have six pints during the same five games and all three are averaging over 13 minutes of ice time per game. This stack is still cheap, especially on DK where they will only cost you $8.9K in salary combined. I like playing all three of these guys, or even just as a two-man salary saver stack. You can add a defenseman to a two-man as well, both Connor Clifton and Mike Reilly are cheap and have been productive with shots on goal and blocked shot points of late.

***Please remember, when I say add a defenseman this does NOT mean play this as a four-man stack. There are 11 games on this slate, there is no reason to play more than three players from one team***

Monreal Canadiens Line 1 vs Arizona:

Mike Hoffman/Nick Suzuki/Brendan Gallagher

The Coyotes played last night with Scott Wedgewood tending the goal, which means Montreal should see Vejmelka in net so it is all systems go for the Habs tonight. Montreal’s top line doesn’t really fit the value category for me, but they are cheap enough, especially the wings, that you can make this work. Both Gallagher and Hoffman are in the low $3K salary range on DK. Hoffman has been the more productive of the two with six points in the last five games while Gallagher has been peppering goalies with 3.1 shots on goal per game in his last nine games and he has either hit the 5+ bonus or missed by 1 shot in five of those nine games. Meanwhile, Nick Suzuki is the expensive piece of this stack, but he has nine points (five goals) in his last five games and averaging 3.2 SOG. Similar to the Boston stack, you can use just two pieces here with a defenseman, I recommend either Jeff Petry or Chris Wideman. Both are cheap (on DK) and have been putting of fantasy points. Ben Chariot is the best play, but he is pricey on DK, but he is actually cheaper than Petry on FD so he is the better play there.

Other top stacks:

Chicago L1: DeBrincat – Strome – Kane. Dmen to use: Seth Jone, de Haad, McCabe

Winnipeg L1: Stastny – Scheifele – Wheeler. Dmen to use: Pionk, Dillon, Demelo

Nashville L1: Forsberg – Granlund – Duchene. Dmen to use: Josi, Fabbro, Ekholm

Vancouver L1: Pearson – Miller – Boeser. Dmen to use: Hamonic, Hughes, Ekman-Larsson

New Jersey L1: Sharangovich – Hughes – Bratt. Dmen to use: Severson, Hamilton, Subban

Some more value…

New York Rangers L2: Panarin – Strome – Hunt. Dmen to use: Trouba, Fox, Miller

Arizona L2: Crouse – Galchenyuk – Kessel. Dmen to use: Mayo, Gostisbehere, Stralman

Dallas L2: Benn – Seguin – Gurianov. Dmen to use: Klingberg, Lindell, Suter

New York Islanders L3: Bailey – Pageau – Palmieri. Dmen to use: Dobson, Pulock, Pelech
