NBA DFS for Ghost’s Gems (Feb. 7)

NBA slates will be turned upside down until the trade deadline. Thus, it is imperative to monitor injury reports, both before and after the slate locks. It’s a Taco Tuesday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Atlanta Hawks @ New Orleans Pelicans (-2.5)

Atlanta Hawks (+2.5)

Trae Young missed the team’s last game but is set to return tonight. Thus, he is one of the most intriguing options on this slate. Over his last seven appearances, Young has scored 20 or more points. Moreover, he has averaged 26.3/3.1/10 on 46.3% shooting. The Pelicans rank second in the NBA versus pick-and-roll offenses, but Trae Young is one of the best in the league to do it and will be counted on to shoulder the load on offense versus a defense that ranks 26th in defensive rating over their last five games.

New Orleans Pelicans (-2.5)

Brandon Ingram missed quite some time for the Pelicans but has come back into the fold. Over his first two games of the month, Ingram has averaged 30.5/7/5.5 on 52.1% shooting. Moreover, he leads the team in field goal attempts during those games, while also leading them in usage rate. Carrying a 36.5% usage rate in this month, Ingram makes for one of the best plays in the mid range of the pricing grid on this NBA slate.

Chicago Bulls @ Memphis Grizzlies (-6.5)

Chicago Bulls (+6.5)

The Bulls are on the second half of a back-to-back and this is a key injury report to monitor. Not only are their players potential rest candidates, but they are also the subject of trade rumors. However, should he suit up, Zach Lavine has a tremendous matchup versus Desmond Bane and is a prime candidate in the mid rage of the pricing grid on this NBA slate. On the season, the latter has a 112.4 net defensive rating, which is second-worst amongst starters. Moreover, Lavine is second in both usage rate and scoring over the team’s last five games, averaging 22.8/6.6/4.2 on 50.6% shooting. The Bulls need to rally wins to make a playoff run, or their Big 3 is doomed to be broken up.

Memphis Grizzlies (-6.5)

The Grizzlies will get both Ja Morant (wrist) and Dillon Brooks (suspension) back in the lineup tonight. We will have to wait for the Bulls’ final injury report to evaluate the potential of this game, but there is plenty to love about the backcourt of Morant and Bane. The two are first and second on the team in usage rate, respectively, while while accounting for 49 points per game. On an NBA slate where value will surely open up, Morant makes too much sense on both sites.

Yesterday, we saw a rollercoaster of a storyline finally come to an end with Kyrie Irving being traded to the Dallas Mavericks. This not only has implications on future NBA slates, but also sets the wheels in motion for other negotiations to heat up. Injury reports will be key to monitor from now until the trade deadline. It’s a Mojito Monday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Sacramento Kings @ Houston Rockets (+6.5)

Sacramento Kings (-6.5)

De’Aaron Fox missed a second straight game last night due to personal reasons. Should he be ruled out once again, Domantas Sabonis is a prime candidate to be one of the highest scoring players on this NBA slate. Houston is surprisingly the best rebounding team in the league at this point in the season, but they struggle mightily versus Sabonis, who has amassed 29 rebounds across two previous meetings between these two teams. Moreover, he has averaged 22/14.5/12.5 versus Houston this season. The Rockets rank 26th in the NBA in points allowed in the paint per game, setting the stage for a bounce back performance from the Kings All-Star after a disappointing outing last night.

Houston Rockets (+6.5)

Kevin Porter Jr. remains without a timetable to return, making Houston one of the more intriguing rotations to follow in the latter stages of the NBA season. Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun hold bright futures, but the Rockets have a tough road ahead of them in this rebuild. The former returned to the lineup last game after missing the previous three, but struggled mightily with his shot. However, he led the team in usage rate and will do so again tonight. In the mid range of the pricing grid, Green carries a ton of risk, but has massive potential to be in the optimal lineup given his shot-making ability. KJ Martin and Eric Gordon make for intriguing plays in the mid range as well, but lack the upside that Green carries.

Oklahoma City Thunder @ Golden State Warriors (-4.5)

Oklahoma City Thunder (+4.5)

Fresh off a 32-point blowout versus the Rockets, where the Thunder put up a ridiculous 153 points, OKC have been thriving in an up-tempo offense this season. They currently sit third in the NBA in pace, while sitting 13th in net rating. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was recently named an All-Star for the first time in his young career, and deservingly so. However, Josh Giddey offers tremendous upside in this matchup as well. Over his last three games, Giddey has averaged 19.3/8/8 on 53.1% shooting. Moreover, he led the team in rebounds during that stretch, as he has done for the duration of the season. Giddey offers a safe floor and a high ceiling in an elite game environment.

Golden State Warriors (-4.5)

The reigning NBA Champions have been dealing with injuries all season long. After an extended absence earlier this season, Steph Curry is now ruled out for multiple weeks. Thus, Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson will be tasked with picking up the bulk of minutes in the backcourt. On the year, Poole has averaged 20.5/2.8/4.3 on 43.5% shooting. Not only is he third in the team in scoring, but also in field goal attempts per night. However, with Curry off the court, Poole takes on a bigger role, both off the bench and in the starting unit. In this scenario, Poole sees his usage rate increase from 29.4% to a whopping 34.8%, while producing 1.12 fantasy points per minute.

For those that enjoy narratives in fantasy sports, this is one of the best slates of the year. Yesterday, the final list for the NBA All-Star game was released and there are notable omissions. Luckily, some of those players are taking the court tonight. It’s a Fajita Friday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Sacramento Kings @ Indiana Pacers (+3.5)

Sacramento Kings (-3.5)

These two teams will be linked for quite some time, as two players dealt for one another are entering their respective primes. For the Kings, Domantas Sabonis earned a well-deserved All-Star nod last night. Leading the NBA in total rebounds and rebounds per game, he has been a force in his first full season with the organization. Tonight, he takes on his former team without De’Aaron Fox, who is out due to personal reasons. On the season, Sabonis carries a 20.9% usage rate and has posted 1.34 fantasy points per minute. With Fox off the court, Sabonis gets little to no increase, but a matchup versus an Indiana frontcourt that ranks 26th in the NBA versus true centers.

Indiana Pacers (+3.5)

The Pacers are on the second half of a back-to-back, meaning there could be additional names added to their final injury report. Last night, Tyrese Haliburton returned after missing a month of action, posting 26/2/12 against the Lakers. Should he be deemed fit to play tonight, he makes for an excellent tournament play. However, do not overlook Buddy Hield. In his last two games, Hield has seen a decrease in shot attempts and will handle the ball less with Haliburton back. However, Hield leads the NBA in three-pointers made this season and is in a matchup versus a Kings defense that ranks last in the league versus wings.

Charlotte Hornets @ Detroit Pistons (-1.5)

Charlotte Hornets (+1.5)

The secondary player at the top of the pricing grid alongside Domantas Sabonis is contingent on LaMelo Ball’s availability tonight. The Hornets have nothing to play for except a higher chance in the NBA Draft lottery, and Ball has dealt with his fair share of injuries this season. The team is on the second half of a back-to-back and Ball was ejected from last night’s game. Nonetheless, this is a terrific spot for one of the most entertaining players in the league. Over his last four games, Ball has averaged 20/9/8 on a mere 35.5% shooting. Moreover, a matchup versus a Pistons defense that ranks 29th in the league versus primary ball handlers sets the stage for Ball to flirt with a triple-double. Look for updates in Discord should he be ruled out.

Detroit Pistons (-1.5)

Until the Pistons make trades to contending teams, their rotation is not friendly for fantasy purposes. Bojan Bogdanovic continues to have an excellent season, with the backcourt carousel of Ivey, Hayes, and Burks limits upside. All four are in an excellent game environment versus a Hornets team that ranks 7th in the NBA in pace and 27th in defensive rating. They will be a steady source of production, but Jalen Duren is the primary target here. Taking over for Isaiah Stewart in the paint, Duren has seen 20 or more minutes in seven of his last eight appearances. Moreover, he has averaged 12.9/9.3/1 during that span, collecting over a steal and block, respectively, per game. The Hornets have been dreadful in the paint once again this season, ranking last in the NBA to opposing centers.

There are tremendous matchups on this NBA slate. Many elite stars take the court, with multiple injury reports expecting to be lengthy. It’s a Wet Wednesday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Golden State Warriors @ Minnesota Timberwolves (+2.5)

Golden State Warriors (-2.5)

The defending NBA Champions are currently slated in the Play-In tournament, but no one in the league wants to face this team. Every game counts for them down the stretch, as they look to creep into a top-4 seed to gain homecourt advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. Steph Curry will continue to lead the way and is in a phenomenal matchup tonight. Minnesota lacks perimeter defense and guarding Curry is a daunting task. Over his last three games, Curry has posted 30 or more points in each appearance. Moreover, he has averaged 35.7/5.7/8.7 on 58.3% shooting during that span, including 53.3% from behind the arc on 5.3 three-pointers made per night.

Minnesota Timberwolves (+2.5)

Anthony Edwards continues to lead the charge for a reeling Timberwolves squad. However, he lacks upside on this slate given his positioning on the pricing grid. Thus, the duo of D’Angelo Russell and Rudy Gobert are enticing in good individual matchups. Edwards will draw Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins on defense, leaving Russell ample room to find his shot. Moreover, Rudy Gobert will take few shot attempts in this one, but has point/dollar upside given his strong chance of getting a double-double. On an NBA slate where most will look to the top of the pricing grid at the center position, Gobert makes for an excellent tournament play.

Sacramento Kings @ San Antonio Spurs (+7.5)

Sacramento Kings (-7.5)

The Kings hold the third seed in the Western Conference but have many teams approaching them. Thus, not even a matchup against the lowly Spurs should be taken lightly. The duo of Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox are both in terrific matchups. San Antonio currently ranks 28th in the NBA versus primary ball handlers and Fox has registered 29 and 32 points, respectively, over his last two games, averaging 30.5/4/5 on 45.1% shooting. Moreover, the Spurs have solid interior defense with Jakob Poeltl manning the paint, but Sabonis will dominate the glass versus a team that sits 20th in the league in rebounding.

San Antonio Spurs (+7.5)

If there is ever a spot to play Keldon Johnson with confidence, it’s in this matchup. While the Spurs continue to look toward the future, Johnson figures to be a crucial piece in their rebuild. Moreover, he leads the team with a 28.1% usage rate this season. Despite a 1-7 record over the team’s last eight games, Johnson has scored 20 or more points in seven of those. He has averaged 25.4/5/2.4 on 48.8% shooting during that span, and gets a matchup versus a Kings defense that ranks last in the NBA versus combo wings.

Toronto Raptors @ Utah Jazz (-3.5)

Toronto Raptors (+3.5)

In the absence of OG Anunoby, other players in this Toronto rotation must step up. Over the last few NBA slates, no one has been as popular as Precious Achiuwa. He has now scored in double digits over his last eight games, averaging 15.6/9.3/1 on 59.3% shooting. The Jazz rank last in the league versus small-ball centers despite ranking second in the league in points allowed in the paint per game. Scottie Barnes and Pascal Siakam also make for excellent tournament plays.

Utah Jazz (-3.5)

While Lauri Markkanen, Jordan Clarkson, and Mike Conley have solidified their place in the Jazz rotation, the true value here lies in the paint. Walker Kessler has been having a phenomenal rookie campaign, averaging 7.7/7.3 on 71.5% shooting. Moreover, he sits fourth in the NBA in blocks per game with 2.0. However, with Toronto running a smaller lineup, do not overlook Jarred Vanderbilt. Make sure to check our proprietary projections to see which of the two is set to give the most value.

As we approach the last quarter of the NBA season, every game is of importance. Many continue to battle for playoff seeding, while others look to the trade deadline to shape their future. It’s a Taco Tuesday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Los Angeles Lakers @ New York Knicks (-1.5)

Los Angeles Lakers (+1.5)

Having rested both LeBron James and Anthony Davis last night, the expectation is that the Lakers offense will return for this contest. Despite Father Time expecting to catch up to LeBron James, one of, if not the greatest to take an NBA court shows no sign of slowing down. Over his last eight games, LeBron has posted 30 or more points in six appearances. Moreover, he has averaged 35.3/8.8/8 on 52% shooting during that span. The return of Anthony Davis certainly causes concern for James’ fantasy outlook, but if the Lakers truly want to make a run, it will be on the back of The King.

New York Knicks (-1.5)

All eyes will be on Julius Randle in a matchup versus his former team. Despite the Knicks being once again a bubble team in the weaker of the two conferences, Randle has flourished after a rocky start to the season. However, this is a prime matchup for Jalen Brunson. The offseason acquisition made waves with his departure from Dallas, but has lived up to the expectations that come with playing in The Big Apple. Over his ten games, Brunson has posted 20 or more points in eight appearances. Moreover, he has averaged 26.2/3.6/5.1 on 47% shooting during that span. With the Lakers ranked 28th in the NBA versus primary ball handlers, Brunson is primed for a big performance at home.

New Orleans Pelicans @ Denver Nuggets (-8.5)

New Orleans Pelicans (+8.5)

The Pelicans’ rotation comes into this contest rested after both CJ McCollum and Brandon Ingram sat out the second half of a back-to-back on Sunday. The two will continue handling the bulk of the offensive opportunities in the absence of Zion Williamson. In two games back since his toe injury, Brandon Ingram has been far from shy with his game. The two-way wing has averaged 17.5/5.5/4.5 which is lower than his expected output, but he has averaged 20 shots per night. Moreover, Ingram has seen his minutes increase in back-to-back games. Ingram carries a higher volatility and ceiling for tournaments, while McCollum offers a safer floor on this NBA slate.

Denver Nuggets (-8.5)

Whenever he takes the court, all eyes are on the back-to-back NBA MVP, Nikola Jokic. The face of the Nuggets franchise has been simply phenomenal again this season, averaging 25.1/10.9/9.9 on 62.9% shooting. Moreover, he leads the league in triple-doubles with 15 across 43 games. However, he limits what the rest of your lineup looks like considering he is near the top of the pricing grid. With Jamal Murray questionable to play due to injury management, value could open up with Aaron Gordon, Michael Porter Jr., and Bruce Brown. Moreover, Bones Hyland is being actively mentioned in potential trades, meaning this rotation is going to tighten up down the stretch of the season. Monitor the injury report and adjust accordingly.

There are plenty of good matchups on a small NBA schedule tonight. Some teams are on the second half of a back-to-back, while others are crawling to the All-Star break hoping to get healthy. It’s a Thirsty Thursday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Detroit Pistons @ Brooklyn Nets (-8.5)

Detroit Pistons (+8.5)

Lately, Jalen Duren has been a force on both ends of the court. The rookie was shockingly dealt from the Knicks/Hornets on draft day in a three-team trade, but the Pistons have been reaping the benefits. Over his last five games, Duren has averaged 13.6/11.6/1 on 71.8% shooting. Moreover, he has collected three double-doubles in those five appearances, seeing 20 minutes or more in four of five. The Nets rank 6th in the NBA in points allowed in the paint per game, but their bench is overmatched versus Duren, who is likely to come out of the starting lineup with the return of Isaiah Stewart looming.

Brooklyn Nets (-8.5)

The Nets are on the second half of a back-to-back and facing an underwhelming opponent. Thus, there is a chance that key players sit this one out. Should Kyrie Irving be one to miss this game, the NBA slate will be turned upside down. Make sure to monitor this injury report throughout the day.

Cleveland Cavaliers @ Houston Rockets (+7.5)

Cleveland Cavaliers (-7.5)

Donovan Mitchell is set to miss multiple games with a groin injury, making the Cavaliers enticing on this NBA slate. Beginning with Darius Garland, the starting unit will thrive against a Rockets defense that ranks 28th in the defensive rating. On the season, Garland has a 27.4% usage rate, resulting in 1.10 fantasy points per minute. However, with Mitchell off the court, Garland sees an increase to 1.24 fantasy points per minute through a 29.8% usage rate. Caris LeVert will see more opportunity on the offense end, while both Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley see more action in the paint with Mitchell out.

Houston Rockets (+7.5)

The Rockets are on the second half of a back-to-back and may rest a few players. Eric Gordon has been the subject of many trade rumors and could get the night off, while Jabari Smith Jr. returned to the lineup after a two-game absence against the Wizards. Thus, the duo of Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun will continue leading the offense. However, there will also be more opportunity for the likes of KJ Martin and Tari Eason, should both Gordon and Smith Jr. miss this game. Another injury report to monitor, but a crucial one to this NBA slate.

Injuries highlight the NBA slate as we approach the All-Star break. Moreover, many players are at the core of trade rumors. It’s a busy time for the league, but it makes these games all that more meaningful. It’s a Wet Wednesday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Indiana Pacers @ Orlando Magic (-4.5)

Indiana Pacers (+4.5)

The Pacers are on the second half of a back-to-back but that won’t stop them from being one of the most popular rotations on the NBA slate. In the absence of Tyrese Haliburton, there have been many players stepping up. TJ McConnell continues to be a hot commodity in the mid range of the pricing grid, while Buddy Hield showed out after being highlighted in yesterday’s article. Moreover, Myles Turner continues to be a fantasy points per minute machine and is seeing an increased workload in the paint.

Orlando Magic (-4.5)

Despite cooling off after a hot start to his NBA career, Paolo Banchero is a tremendous play in the mid range of the pricing grid. Banchero has now scored in double digits across 12 straight appearances, averaging 19.8/5.7/3.3 on 42.4% shooting. However, his minutes have been limited during that stretch, large in part because of blowout losses. Tonight, the Magic are favored as two rebuilding teams face one another. With The Pacers lacking size on the wing, opting for smaller lineups with combo guards such as Mathurin and Hield, Panchero holds a massive size advantage against anyone he lines up against.

Washington Wizards @ Houston Rockets (+3.5)

Washington Wizards (-3.5)

Both of these teams are riddled with injuries but this is one of the best game environments on the NBA slate. Despite Kyle Kuzma acting as the primary ball handler in this offense, the sheer upside that Bradley Beal has in this matchup is too good to pass up on. Not only is his place on the pricing grid outright disrespectful, but the Rockets rank 28th in the league in defensive rating. He is far from his form that nearly led him to a scoring title in 2020-2021, but Beal is still one of the best off-ball guards in the league. The absence of Kristaps Porzingis opens up a ton of shots for Beal, who has scored 20 or more points in ten of his last fifteen appearances.

Houston Rockets (+3.5)

On the flipside of this matchup is plenty of offensive potential in its own right. In the absence of Kevin Porter Jr., both Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green have been phenomenal. The former gets a juicy matchup versus Daniel Gafford, who is simply not match for the sophomore. Sengun has three double-doubles in his last four games, averaging 24.3/12.5/6.5 during that span. Moreover, Green has scored 20 or more points in four of his last five games since KPJ went down with a foot injury. Green has averaged 28.6/3.2/3.6 on 49.5% shooting during that span, taking over 20 field goal attempts per night.

Toronto Raptors @ Sacramento Kings (-4.5)

Toronto Raptors (+4.5)

One of the most intriguing teams heading into the NBA trade deadline, the Raptors still have one of the best cores in the league. However, they have failed to return to form that won them a championship only a few years ago. Yes, Kawhi Leonard is gone, but OG Anunoby is one of the best defenders in the league, while Pascal Siakam and Scottie Barnes have the potential to carry this team to wins nightly. In this matchup, Gary Trent Jr. will see a lot of shot attempts versus a Kings defense the struggles on the perimeter. Moreover, Scottie Barnes will be key in defending De’Aaron Fox, while producing on offense and on the glass.

Sacramento Kings (-4.5)

Simply put, this is a tremendous matchup for Domantas Sabonis. To the surprise of no one, he is featured once again in a Kings writeup. However, the Raptors struggle on the glass, giving Sabonis great potential to dominate both ends of the paint. Over his last seven games, not only has Sabonis posted six double-doubles, but he also has eight or more assists in each one of those appearances. Sabonis has averaged a 17.4/12.9/10.9 triple-double during that span, showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

A few teams are on the second half of a back-to-back, while others’ injury reports figure to be lengthy. This NBA slate will certainly be one to monitor throughout the day. It’s a Taco Tuesday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Chicago Bulls @ Indiana Pacers (-1.5)

Chicago Bulls (+1.5)

The Bulls are on the second half of a back-to-back, meaning there is a chance players miss this game. In addition, Chicago has many players still on contracts with term, making them attractive trade deadline pieces. However, this is still one of the best game environments on the NBA slate. The trio of Lavine, Vucevic, and DeRozan will continue to dominate usage on the offensive side of the ball. Of the three, Lavine has the highest ceiling, but Vucevic has the best ceiling/floor combination. Over his last 11 games, Vucevic has record 11 straight double-doubles. Moreover, he has been dominant on the glass and has seen an increase in offensive looks. With the Pacers ranked 27th in the NBA against true centers, Vucevic will line up on Turner for a ton of minutes.

Indiana Pacers (-1.5)

Tyrese Haliburton continues to rehabilitate from a knee injury, leaving this offense with plenty of additional looks to go around. In this particular matchup against the Bulls, Buddy Hield will be the x-factor. On the season, Hield leads the NBA in three-pointers made with 181. Moreover, he has shot 42.2% from behind the arc, averaging 3.8 three-pointers per night. With the Bulls ranked 29th in the league in three-pointers allowed, Hield will be relied upon to shoulder the load.

In a rare occurrence, Nikola Jokic has missed the last two games for the Nuggets. Should he miss this one again tonight, Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. will see more shot attempts. However, the latter is also in question tonight considering he missed last game due to personal reasons. Should Porter Jr. miss this game, Bruce Brown and Aaron Gordon make for intriguing options on this NBA slate, barring a Jokic absence. This is an important injury report to monitor.

New Orleans Pelicans (OTB)

The Pelicans got off to a hot start but have been falling in the absence of both Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. While the former is set to be re-evaluated soon, the latter is still listed as doubtful for tonight. Thus, CJ McCollum will continue leading this offense. Over the course of the season, McCollum has a 27.4% usage rate, resulting in 1.11 fantasy points per minute. However, with both Williamson and Ingram off the court, McCollum sees increases to 1.21 fantasy points per minute through a 31.8% usage rate. Denver ranks 26th in the NBA versus primary ball handlers, setting the stage for McCollum to have a stellar performance.

Los Angeles Clippers @ Los Angeles Lakers (+3.5)

Despite missing many games for the Clippers throughout his tenure, Kawhi Leonard has been tremendous. The Klaw now has scored 24 or more points in seven straight appearances. Moreover, he has averaged 29.9/6.7/3.9 on 54.1% shooting during that span. In a game between the two Los Angeles teams, all eyes will be on Kawhi & Paul George versus LeBron James. If you are looking for serious star power on this NBA slate, there is no greater game environment than this one.

Los Angeles Lakers (+3.5)

Despite being in his 20th NBA season, LeBron James is showing no signs of slowing down. Only 223 points behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the all-time scoring record, James is set to make history in the near future. This season, James has averaged 29.8/8.5/6.9 on 50.8% shooting through a 36.8% usage rate. Moreover, he has scored 30 or more points in four of his last five games, averaging 35/8.8/7.6 during that span. Committing to this game environment limits your options for the rest of your DFS lineups, but it truly has the best potential on the slate.

There are plenty of great matchups tonight in the NBA. Unfortunately, many players continue to be sidelined with injuries. However, many unfamiliar names have stepped up for their respective teams. It’s a Mojito Monday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Minnesota Timberwolves @ Houston Rockets (+6.5)

Minnesota Timberwolves (-6.5)

In the second matchup between these two teams in only three days, all eyes will be on Anthony Edwards. The former #1 overall draft pick exploded for 44/6/4 on Saturday, making him likely to be one of the popular options on this NBA slate. Over his last seven games, Edwards has scored 20 or more points in six appearances. Moreover, he has averaged 27/5.3/5 during that span, shooting 46.9% from the field. With the Rockets ranked 28th in defensive rating, Edwards is set to continue leading this offense.

Houston Rockets (+6.5)

Should Rudy Gobert miss a fourth consecutive game, Alperen Sengun is an elite target in the mid range of the pricing grid. Over his last eight games, Sengun has logged 28 or more minutes in every appearance. Moreover, he has averaged 19.1/11.1/5.9 during that span, displaying both finishing and playmaking ability. With Gobert on the sidelines, Minnesota has a 115.1 net defensive rating, which would currently rank 25th in the NBA.

Charlotte Hornets @ Utah Jazz (-7.5)

Exposure to the Hornets is contingent on the availability of LaMelo Ball. After missing Saturday’s game with an ankle injury, Ball has since been upgraded to questionable for this matchup. However, should he eventually be ruled out, Terry Rozier will lead the charge on offense. On the season, Rozier is second on the team with a 26.9% usage rate, producing 1.03 fantasy points per minute. However, with Ball off the court, Rozier sees increases to a usage rate of 30.2% and 1.09 points per minute. The Jazz struggle more off the ball than with primary ball handlers, ranking 27th in the NBA versus the former.

Utah Jazz (-7.5)

Although Kelly Olynyk is nearing a return to the lineup, the future of the Jazz in the paint lies in Walker Kessler. Despite having a low 12.8% usage rate on the year, Kessler has been on the best from the most recent NBA draft class. He not only has three double-doubles over his last four games, but he is also averaging 12.5/12.5/1.8 on nearly 70% shooting during that span. Moreover, despite logging 29 minutes per game, Kessler is fourth in the NBA in blocks, averaging 2.0 per night.

Memphis Grizzlies @ Sacramento Kings (+2.5)

Memphis is on the second half of a back-to-back so there could be addition to their injury report throughout the day. Believe it or not, this game features two of the best in the Western Conference, as Sacramento shockingly finds themselves in the third seed. Despite an improved defensive system for the Kings, they lack the ability to close out on wings. Thus, Desmond Bane is the player to watch tonight, alongside Ja Morant. The former has battled injuries this year, but has been performing quite well. He carries a 26.7% usage rate on the season, averaging 21.6 points per game in over 30 minutes per night.

Sacramento Kings (+2.5)

While Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox are both worthy on an NBA All-Star selection, it will be tough to fit one of them in NBA lineups tonight with other priorities. Thus, both Kevin Huerter and Harrison Barnes find themselves as options. The former gets a favorable matchup on the perimeter versus a Memphis defense that ranks 22nd in three-pointers allowed per game. Thus far, Huerter has shot 41.4% from deep, making 2.9 three-pointers per night. Moreover, Barnes has scored 20 or more points in four of his last five appearances. Sporting a 19.1% usage rate during that span, Barnes has averaged 22.8 points per game on 53.2% shooting.

There are only five games on the schedule tonight, but there sure is plenty of firepower. Headlining the main slate is a rematch of last year’s NBA Finals, while Chicago and Detroit face off in an afternoon game overseas. It’s a Thirsty Thursday edition of the Gems – let’s ride.

Golden State Warriors @ Boston Celtics (-5.5)

This is the second time these teams face one another since the NBA Finals. The matchup in December was no letdown, seeing the Warriors take a 123-107 victory at home. Tonight, this game will be overlooked because of interest in other studs at the top of the pricing grid. As popular as Damian Lillard will be because of his recent play, Steph Curry makes for an excellent pivot in tournaments. Since returning from injury, Curry struggled mightily over his first three games back. He averaged a mere 19.7/5/3.3 on 44.9% shooting, hitting only 31.3% of his three-pointers. However, on the second half of a back-to-back and in his fourth game returning, Curry exploded for 41/7/2 versus the Wizards.

Boston Celtics (-5.5)

Should Jaylen Brown miss this game with a groin injury, Jayson Tatum instantly becomes one of the best studs on the NBA slate. On the season, Tatum has averaged 31.1/8.3/4.3 through a 32.9% usage rate. This has resulted in Tatum posting 1.41 fantasy points per minute. However, with Brown off the court, Tatum sees his usage rate increase to 35.8% and his output increases slightly to 1.43 fantasy points per minute. Brown did practice on Wednesday, meaning he in likely to suit up. Thus, both Marcus Smart and Robert Williams III make for good plays in a competitive game environment. The former will be on the court in all clutch moments, while the latter has logged 27 or more minutes in three straight games since having his minutes restriction lifted.

Toronto Raptors @ Minnesota Timberwolves (+3.5)

If the NBA slate is starving for value on the pricing grid, then two Raptors will be the primary path to success. Having the luxury of running a tight rotation thanks to players with incredible length, Coach Nick Nurse focuses on seven players on a nightly basis. Thus, two of Fred VanVleet, Scottie Barnes, and Gary Trent Jr. fit the scenario of a balanced lineup structure. VanVleet has been lights out in the last two games, posting 30+ points in back-to-back appearances. Meanwhile, Trent Jr. has been logging serious minutes and scoring in bunches as well. Barnes is the unicorn of the roster, playing and guarding positions one through five. If value is needed on this slate, Precious Achiuwa continues to be the first player off the bench and carries a relatively safe floor.

Minnesota Timberwolves (+3.5)

Exposure to this offense depends on two key injury statuses: Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert. The latter was ruled out of Wednesday’s game with a groin injury, while the former continues to deal with a recurring hip soreness. Should Gobert be ruled out once again, Naz Reid will be a staple for NBA lineups tonight. Reid carries a 23% usage rate and 1.14 fantasy points per minute this season. However, in four starts this season, he has averaged 20.3/8 this season through a 25.4% usage rate. Moreover, D’Angelo Russell and Jaylen Nowell are in line for big roles tonight, only if Edwards be ruled out.
