The Range is a course breakdown for the upcoming PGA tournament with a DFS perspective. This week the tour is in California as the players face off at the Genesis Open.

The Basics

Course: Riviera CC ( Pacific Palisades, CA )
Par: 71
Length: 7,322 yards
Fairways: Kikuyu
Greens: Poa
Past five winners: ’19 JB. Holmes (-14), ’18 B. Watson (-12), ’17 D. Johnson (-17), ’16 B. Watson (-15), ’15 J. Hahn (-6)
For a hole by hole breakdown, visit the PGA Tour website here.

Course Breakdown

Since the 1999 season, the Genesis Open is played at the Riveria Country club. Over the last ten years, the average winning score is -12 with a high of -17 and a low of -6. Twelve of the last twenty rounds have rated as a difficult score. Let’s look at some of the top golfers over the last 24 rounds and how they’ve fared with difficult scoring.

The fairways at the Genesis Open are more narrow than tour average, with this in mind we’ll want to focus on golfers who are sharp ball-strikers (like most weeks). Below are the top ten golfers over the last 24 rounds.

Strokes gained putting tends to be a high correlation to success here. Golfers who can perform well on Poa greens could gain an edge on this tough course. The illustration here shows the top golfers over the last 24 rounds.

Here are the golfers that have performed well under all three conditions listed above.

Player Fit – Back End

At the Genesis Open, most of the toughest holes and a few of the easiest holes are the Par 4 450 – 500 yards. Looking for golfers that excel in this range will be a nice spot to start. Between the Par 3s and the longer holes on the Riviera CC, the long irons will play a huge role. Look for golfers that play well between 175 – 200 yards in proximity.

With the smaller greens, GIR should play a big part. For those that miss the greens in regulation, they’ll need to be able to scramble to save par. As usual, Opportunity Gained will be part of the model but unlike most weeks I’m leaning more bogey avoidance over birdie or better.

Here are the combined stats from up above which will represent the golfers below when they’re evenly weighted.

Final Recap for the Genesis Open

Looking for players that have played the course before should be a priority. I’m not saying new timers cannot do well, but according to Datagolf the Riviera CC plays only behind Augusta for course history relevance.

Course Setup
Difficult Scoring
Hard to hit fairways
Poa Greens

Player Efficiencies
Par 4 scoring: 450 – 500 yards
The proximity between 175 – 200 yards
GIR
Scrambling
Opportunity Gained
Bogey Avoidance

SA @ LAC – At 10:30 P.M. Eastern Time

Top PG Picks:

Spencer Dinwiddie – DK: ($8,000)

Dinwiddie is a great play tonight as Kyrie Irving is out for another week due to injuries. Nevertheless, Dinwiddie has recorded at least 34 fantasy points on DraftKings in each of his last four games. With Irving out, he figures to take back the lions-share of offensive production for Brooklyn. On top of all this, he gets a very exploitable match-up tonight against the Phoenix Suns who are currently ranked 27th in the NBA against opposing PGS’s. Look for him to have a floor of 35 fantasy points tonight.

Ja Morant – DK: ($6,800)

Morant is a solid option at the PG position for tonight’s main slate on DraftKings. He’s got a very cheap price tag tonight and has put up at least 34 fantasy points on DraftKings in eight of his last ten games. Tonight he will take on Detroit and just two weeks ago Morant dropped 16 points, 12 assists, and 2 rebounds in 32 minutes of action. Detroit is allowing 111.6 points per game as a team on the season. Look for Morant to have a floor of 32 fantasy points on DraftKings tonight.

Elfrid Payton – DK: ($6,500)

Payton has been elevating his play at an impressive rate as the season continues to steamroll forward. He has now recorded at least 32 fantastic points on DraftKings in each of his last 7 games now. On top of that, Payton already played Cleveland once this year and was able to put up 33 fantasy points on DraftKings in that one. At the end of the day, Payton can score, pass, rebound, and play defense at a solid clip. Look for him to have a floor of 30 fantasy points tonight.

Reggie Jackson – DK: ($4,700)

Reggie Jackson is my sleeper pick at the PG position for tonight’s NBA action. He’s now recorded at least 30 points on DraftKings in four out of his last 6 six games. Detroit has been dealing with injuries all season long so I fully expect Jackson to continue this rate of production. It may not be the most efficient player each night, but at least he’s getting the touches. In fact, he’s attempted 12 or more shots in each of his last 6 games. Look for him to have a floor of 25 fantasy points on DraftKings tonight.

Top SG Picks:

Bradley Beal – DK: ($10,100)

Beal continues to tear it up as he’s now recorded at least 51 fantasy points on DraftKings in each of his last six outings. He’s also made at least 10 free-throws in each of his last four games. Tonight he gets a great match-up against Golden State who is currently 22nd in the NBA in opponent points allowed per game at 114.3. This should be a very high-scoring affair and Beal figures to take on the brunt of the offensive load. Look for him to have a floor of 45 with a ceiling in the upper 60’s on DraftKings tonight.

Jaylen Brown – DK: ($7,600)

Kemba Walker and Ennis Kanter will both be sitting out for tonight’s game. This will undoubtedly allow for Brown to have another big outing. He’s now recorded at least 31 fantasy points in five out of his last six games. On top of that, he is taking on Atlanta tonight who is ranked 23rd in the NBA against opposing SF’s. This will be the second time this season Brown has played Atlanta and in the first bout; he racked up 42.5 fantasy points on DraftKings. Look for him to have a floor of 32 fantasy points tonight.

Alec Burks – DK: ($5,300)

Burks has been putting up a consistent floor of around 25 fantasy points on DraftKings over the past few weeks. He also can be a micro-wave scorer and put up huge numbers on any given night. Nevertheless, he’s recorded at least 23 points on DraftKings in eight of his last ten games. To make things even more interesting, Washington is dead last in the NBA for opponent points allowed per game. The value is absolutely there with Burks tonight and he has a very affordable price tag.

Mikal Bridges – DK: ($4,500)

Bridges is another cheap play I like tonight as Phoenix gets set to take on a Kyrie-Irving-less Brooklyn team tonight. One of the main reasons I like this play is because of the injuries Phoenix is dealing with. As well as the amount of playing time Bridges has been receiving. He’s failed to hit 30 minutes of action in just one game over his last ten appearances. Look for him to have a floor of 25 fantasy points on DraftKings tonight.

Top SF Picks:

Kawhi Leonard – DK: ($10,300)

Leonard has now scored at least 30 points in each of his last 9 games for the Clippers. Including a 31 point performance against Minnesota two nights ago where he played just 24 minutes of action. On top of all this, Leonard has reached at least 40 fantasy points on DraftKings in each of his last ten games. Tonight’s opponent is the San Antonio Spurs and Kawhi has already played them three times this season. He’s averaging a whopping 53.8 fantasy points per game against them. Look for him to have a floor of 46 fantasy points tonight.

Kelly Oubre Jr – DK: ($7,100)

Kelly Oubre makes for an intriguing play tonight as the Suns get set to take on the Brooklyn Nets. Oubre played them once this season and was able to put up 26.3 fantasy points in 30 minutes of action. On top of this, Oubre has recorded at least 28 fantasy points on DraftKings in nine of his last ten appearances. Phoenix will most likely be without 3 or 4 of their key guys tonight due to injuries. I expect to see Oubre take on more responsibilities on both ends of the floor. Look for him to have a floor of 35 fantasy points tonight.

Robert Covington – DK: ($5,500)

Covington is a solid value play tonight given his price tag is very affordable. He’s recorded at least 20 fantasy points on DraftKings in each of his last ten games now for the Timberwolves. Now that his playing time is more consistent, I have a lot more confidence rolling with him. Tonight’s opponent is Sacramento and this will be the third time this season these two teams have met. Covington is averaging 34.4 fantasy points per game against them.

Bruce Brown – DK: ($3,800)

Brown is very frustrating from a DFS perspective because he never really costs that much and he can put up big numbers. Last night against Denver, Brown racked up a whopping 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists in 38 minutes of action. These ‘big games’ can be looked at as an anomaly because he hasn’t been consistent this year. However, this performance is a reminder as to what he is capable of. Tonight he is only $3,800 on DraftKings and with that price point, he’ll only need 20 fantasy points to be worth it.

Top PF Picks:

Domantas Sabonis – DK: ($9,600)

TJ Warren has already been ruled out for tonight’s action and Oladipo is expected to still be on a minute restriction. These are both great reasons as to why Sabonis should have an uptick on both ends of the floor tonight. Conversely, the opponent tonight in Dallas and they will be without their best player Luka Doncic. This should ultimately allow for this game to remain competitive through all 4 quarters. Look for Sabonis to have a floor of 40 fantasy points on DraftKings tonight.

Jayson Tatum – DK: ($7,500)

Tatum is the other Celtics player that I really like for tonight’s action. Boston will be without Kemba Walker and Marcus Smart tonight which should lead to more looks for Tatum offensively. At the end of the day, Tatum has been on a roll having put up at least 31 fantasy points on DraftKings in nine of his last ten games. On top of that, Atlanta is the opponent tonight and they are ranked 23rd in the NBA against opposing PF’s. Look for him to have a floor of 34 fantasy points tonight.

Marquese Chriss – DK: ($5,500)

Chriss has found himself some consistent playing time in the Warriors rotation thanks to the Willy Cauley-Stein trade. He has now recorded at least 20 points on DraftKings in each of his last 6 games. Tonight he has an extremely exploitable match-up against Washington who is ranked dead last in the NBA in opponent points allowed per game. If you are looking to save money at the PF or C position tonight, Chriss is your guy. Look for him to have a floor of 25 fantasy points tonight.

Brandon Clarke – DK: ($5,000)

Clarke makes for a solid DFS play tonight given his price tag and his projected outcome. He has recorded at least 24 points on DraftKings in eight of his last ten games. Tonight he will take on Detroit for the second time this season. In the first bout; Clarke recorded 15 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, and 1 steal in 25 minutes of action. He’s the type of player who doesn’t need to play 30+ minutes a game to be productive. Look for a floor of 23 fantasy points tonight.

Top C Picks:

Nikola Vucevic – DK: ($8,800)

Vucevic is one of my favorite plays at the C position tonight given his match-up and price-tag. He is $1,800 cheaper than Karl Anthony Towns tonight and I think they have very similar floors. Vucevic will be taking on Charlotte who is ranked 30th in the NBA against opposing C’s. They have been getting torched by opposing big men all season long and I don’t expect that to stop tonight. In fact, Vucevic played the Hornets once already this year and put up 46 fantasy points on DraftKings. Look for him to have a floor of 40 fantasy points tonight.

Deandre Ayton – DK: ($7,700)

Ayton has recorded at least 30 points on DraftKings in nine of his last ten games. Tonight he will take on Brooklyn who is currently ranked 26th in the NBA against opposing C’s. Phoenix is still dealing with a plethora of injuries at the moment so It only makes sense that they will lean on Ayton more tonight. Look for him to have a floor of 34 fantasy points on DraftKings.

Quick reviewof last week: We had Tiger, Matsuyama and Rory in our core builds, and theyfinished 1-3. We also pegged high-priced Matthew Fitzpatrick as a key fade, andhe finished second to last among the 76 golfers who finished the tournament. Prettysolid.

We also had Matthew Fitzpatrick listed as a top fade!

Okay. Now onto this week.

PGA DFS Course Notes:

  • Course: Sheshan International Golf Club(Par: 72 – Yardage: 7,264 – Greens: Bentgrass).
  • Like last week, it’s tree-lined, with plenty of water hazards (inplay on 11 holes).
  • No-cut event featuring 78 golfers
  • In three of the last sixeditions, winners finished 20-under or lower
  • Rain isn’t expected and thedaytime highs will eclipse 70 degrees.
  • Focus Stat Categories are Par 5 Scoring, Birdie or Better %,Driving Accuracy, Scrambling, Strokes Gained: Putting, SG: Tee-to-Green, SandSave %

The Picks:

Elite PGA DFS (DK $9,500and up):

Rory McIlroy (DK $11,700, FD$12,400) –We talked about how Rory likestree-line layouts, and he finished T3 at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP, where he ledthe field in par-5 scoring – obne of our top stats this week. In four starts atSheshan International, he has two top-10s and a T11. Giddyup.

Hideki Matsuyama (DK $11,100, FD $11,400) – Matsuyama is playing really well and his form (T16, a T3 and a solo second to open the season) isn’t the only thing he’s got going. He tore the course to shreds at Sheshan International in 2016 en route to a seven-shot victory.

Xander Schauffele (DK $10,800, FD $11,300) – Xander likes the competition of a loaded field, and there’s a lot of great golfers here to get him pumped up.  He’s the defending champion and he finished T10 at Narashino on Sunday. The X-Man is ready.

Justin Rose (DK $10,500, FD $11,200) – I like Rose, despitehis putting woes. I like Justin, so much that I’m bustin! Seriously, though – theEnglishman is a great ball striker and he won here in 2017, finishing third inhis title defense.

Also consider: Paul Casey,Patrick Reed, Tony Finau

Mid-Range PGA DFS (DK $7,500to $9,400):

Adam Scott (DK $9,300, FD $10,600) – Adam has top-20s in three of the last five appearances here and in five of his last seven starts worldwide. That’s a great start, he’s got a good price, and he’s shown improvement with his occasionally shaky putting.

Billy Horschel (DK $8,900, FD$10,200) –When he’srolling, he’s really rolling. He finished T6 at ZOZO and that gave him his 10thtop-25 in 14 starts worldwide. Finished T11 here last year and has a greatattitude, especially in no-cut events.

Byeong Hun An (DK $9,100, FD$10,000) –Ben hasplayed well recently, which helped carry him through a difficult course design atthe ZOZO. He was T6 at NINE BRIDGES, he finished T8 at Narashino and while Shesanis a challenge, he’s a solid contrarian play who will be low-owned.

Corey Connors (DK $8,200, FD$9,300) – Connorsis one of the more underrated golfers on tout and has finished T13-T12-T6 inadvance of his debut at Shesan. PGA tour notes that he excelled on TPC SanAntonio’s tough par 5s – which is a featured stat here.

Louis Oosthuizen (DK $7,600, FD$8,900) –Oostyfinished T46th last week, but I’ll chalk that up to bad weather. He’s still greatoff the tee, a solid ball striker and a fiery competitor who can get hot with theputter.

Matt Wallace (DK $ FD $9,600) – The cheeky, sometimes-harsh Brit is debuting as an official member of the PGA Tour and has three top-10s and a T15 in his last five starts on the Euro Tour. We saw a little of what he can do in crowded fields last season during the majors, and he’s got plenty of upside.

Charles Howell, III (DK $7,900, FD $9,000) – A long and accuratehitter and bentgrass specialist who seems like an excellent course fit, Howellis cheap and scores well on Par 4s – so I’m giving him the benefit of the doubton this unfamiliar layout.

Also consider:  Sungjae Im, Tyrell Hatton, Bernd Wiesberger, Sergio Garcia, Shane Lowry

Value PGA DFS (DK Under $7,500):

Erik Van Rooyen (DK $7,500, FD $8,700) – One of my favorite under-the-radarGPP plays, Van Rooyen got cut last week but otherwise has been in good form. Hefinished T14-T12-Win-T5-T20-T14-MC-T10-MC over his last nine starts dating backto the Euro Tour’s Scottish Open, and he’s a career best 58th in the OfficialWorld Golf Ranking.

Kevin Kisner (DK $7,400, FD$8,600) –Kisner is a capable player without any major flaws who’s always underpriced, and I like his chances of rebounding after a tough T66 at the ZOZO. Jet lag isa thing.

Chez Reavie (DK $7,400, FD$8,600) –I’ll be using him exclusively in GPPs after last week’s debacle. I can guessthat poor showing was in part because of the weather, because he’s too good to finishthat far down. He’ll be off most people’s lists, which puts him on mine.

Keegan Bradley (DK $7,000, FD$8,600) – A long and straight driver of the golf ball, theenigmatic but eminently likeable Bradley has some good performances here: T11(2013) and sixth (2018) at Sheshan International and finished T13 at Narashino, where he was T6 in GIR. GPP-only play.

More value golfers for GPPs: Lucas Glover, Joost Luiten, MikeLorenzo-Vera, Romain Langasque, J.T. Poston

The PGA DFS Fades:

Ian Poulter (DK $7,700, FD $9,000) – He’s not great withexpectations, and he’ll be really popular because of his record in China. Golfis a fickle beast, and Poulter won’t make too many of my builds.

Jordan Spieth (DK $9,400, FD $10,400) – I’m not sure Spieth hasproven anything on the golf course recently, and he finished T66 at the ZOZO. Theprice is still too high, and I’m not convinced he’s accurate enough off the teeto excel here.

Spades’ Fade of the Week:

Henrik Stenson (DK $9,800, FD $10,800) – “He’s only done well in Euro tournaments recently and the first week without his three-wood, he misses the cut. He’s overpriced – should be in the $8K range on DK.” – Mark “Spades” Spada

Right there withyou, Spades. The magic three wood is gone, and so is the magic golf game.Stenson isn’t a great putter, and he missed the cut at the Houston Open despitebeing the odds-on favorite. He’s a fade for me, bro.

PGA DFS — Sample DK GPP lineup:

R. McIlroy ($11,700)

B. Horschel ($8,900)

C. Conners ($8,200)

K. Kisner ($7,200)

J.T. Poston ($6,700)

X. Schauffele ($10,800)

L. Oosthuizen ($7,600)

The NHL has presented us with a Thursday night, nine-game slate. We will go for a position by position breakdown tonight. There are some intriguing plays and strong stacks to consider, let’s get into it!

Sign up NOW for WIN DAILY Premium Gold right here! DFS Pro Cheat Sheets, projections, wagering info, 24/7 expert chats with our DFS Pros and more!

10/17 NHL DFS Centers

Mika Zibanejad (FD $7,600 | DK $7,800) – He will highlight the top line of the Hudson River Rivalry that is set to take place tonight. Unfortunately for the Devils, they have yet to win a game this season. They are giving up the second-highest goals allowed per game in the league at 4.5 goals allowed, keeping them steadily in the last place. In just three games, Zibanejad has scored eight points (four goals, four assists), giving him the highest points per game this season by far.

Paul Stastny (FD $5,400 | DK $6,200) – Member of the biggest line lock of the night, Stastny and Company will be going up against the lowly Sens, who are settling at third-last in the league with one win and four losses to start the season. With the game in Vegas, Ottawa will need a prayer and that might not even do it. Stastny’s price has remained relatively cheap despite being on the highest producing line on his team and bagging six points in his last three games (three goals, three assists).
Honorable Mention: Sean Couturier

10/17 NHL DFS Wingers

JT Miller (FD $5,600 | DK $4,700) – Miller has been on fire to start the season and has proven to be one of the Canucks’ best offseason pickups. Miller leads the team in scoring given that he scored six points in his last three games (three goals, three assists). Miller has been averaging around 18 minutes of ice-time per game but given his recent performances, it wouldn’t be a surprise if that increased. Not to mention he appears on the Canucks deadly top power-play unit. Finally, Miller will be playing against the Blues, who have had a rather mediocre start to the season and have coughed up a fair amount of goals, 3.33 per game to be exact. I wouldn’t be surprised if Miller got on the end of one of them.

David Pastrnak (FD $8,500 | DK $7,500) – Pastrnak is simply an elite winger, if you’re looking for a low-owned play with a safe floor Pastrnak is your guy, as he leads the Bruins with 10 points in six games, followed by his linemates Marchand and Bergeron. Last game, Pastrnak lit up one of the league’s best in John Gibson for four goals en route to his team’s 4-2 win over the Ducks last Monday.
HM: Nick Schmaltz

10/17 NHL DFS Defensemen

Alexander Edler (FD $5,800 | DK $6,300) – Vancouver’s lead power powerplay defenseman has registered four points in his last three games and has averaged a whopping 25 minutes of average ice-time throughout the season. It is clear coach Travis Green has faith in the veteran Swede and given the leakage, the Blues have been prone to thus far this season, Edler holds value as a stack option alongside the Canucks’ top line (Miller, Pettersson, Boeser)

Jacob Trouba (FD $5,800 | DK $6,000) – Much like his teammate, Zibanejad Trouba hit the ground running in his first three games of the season with a goal and three assists while averaging 24 minutes of ice-time per game. Trouba carries a price tag on the higher end but works well in a Rangers stack alongside Buchnevich, Panarin and Zibanejad, given that they all play together on the Rangers top power play unit.
HM: Shea Theodore, Ryan Ellis

10/17 NHL DFS Goalies

Pekka Rinne (FD $8,700 | DK $8,000) – Rinne is a perfect 4-0-0 to start the season and will have one of the best offensive teams in front of him with a CF% of 51.48. The Preds also lead the league in goals and have the sixth-highest shots per game total in the league. Rinne will be pricey but if you’re looking for a safe play between the pipes Rinne is the way to go.

Carter Hutton (FD $8,500 | DK $7,800) – Hutton has been as good as Rinne if not better. He too holds a perfect 4-0-0 record and holds an extremely low 1.74 GAA. The Kings shoot a lot but don’t turn the offensive production into goals nearly enough, as they are currently hovering around the middle of the league in goals per game while posting the second-most shots on goal per game in the league. Furthermore, the Kings have started the season on the back foot with a 2-4-0 record and look to be starting Jonathan Quick, who holds an abysmal stat line at 0-3-0, a GAA of 6.44 and a Save Percentage below .800.
HM: Alexander Georgiev

10/17 NHL DFS STACKS & CASH PLAY OF THE NIGHT

Vegas Golden Knights 2 – This line should be an auto-lock tonight. Stat-wise this line is far and away the most intriguing option and with that will come the super high ownership, especially in cash. This is the good kind of chalk and given the price of some of their player such as Stastny and Theodore, they are surprisingly stackable with other strong options tonight.

New York Rangers 1 (Zibanejad, Panarin, Trouba), Buffalo Sabres 1 (Reinhart, Eichel, Olofsson)

10/17 NHL DFS Game Stacks

Vancouver vs St. Louis – Both of these teams are very offensive-minded, with both teams averaging over three goals a game. The optimal game stack would be Vancouver’s top line alongside St. Louis’ second line, and alternatively their first line. Statistically, these two teams are very evenly matched and this game could turn into a shootout.

10/17 NHL DFS Punts
Calle Jarnkrok (FD $3,600 | DK $3,500) Jarnkrok will be playing on Nashville’s top line and although Kuemper has had his moments to start the season. The Preds are leading the league in goals with 4.67 per game, one of which came from Jarnkrok last game. Over his past three games, Jarnkrok has had four assists and has steadily been seeing an increase in ice-time each and every game. If Forsberg is held out of tonight’s contest the winger will be set to see even more ice time. The fact that he plays on the Preds’ top power play unit only adds to his value.

Quinn Hughes (FD $4,000 | DK $3,700) Quinn has had his moments this season but has largely been overshadowed by the success of his defensive teammate Alexander Edler. In a pinch, Hughes still provides excellent value as he has registered three points in his first five games while averaging 20 minutes of ice time per night and playing on the Canucks second power-play unit. Hughes is the future of Vancouver’s defensive core and will definitely be in the mix when considering low owned Canuck plays tonight. Hughes pairs well alongside Tanner Pearson.
