Edmonton Oilers

Welcome to Wednesday’s edition of Between the Benches.   We have a nice sized 4-game slate tonight.  Even though it’s a pretty small slate, we still have several sports that we can go for offense.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Igor Shesterkin ($7.8K DK/$8.3k FD) vs. Ottawa Senators – Igor Shesterkin is coming off arguably his 2 worst efforts of the season.  He gave up 4 goals to Edmonton and another 4 to the powerhouse of a team we call the New Jersey Devils.  Tonight’s matchup against the Senators should be a solid bounce-back spot for him.

The Senators are coming into this one having scored just 15 goals over their last 6 games.  2.5 goals per game isn’t going to cut it and when playing against a normally solid goalie in Shesterkin, they should score even less than that tonight.  Shesterkin was very vocal about his performance against the Devils and should be extra motivated to have a solid game tonight.  His price is down below $8k on DK tonight and that has me on him even more tonight.

Ilya Samsonov ($6.5k DK/$6.5k FD) vs. San Jose Sharks – Ilya Samsonov is expected to make his return tonight after a more than 3-week absence due to injury.  Prior to going on the shelf, Samsonov was playing extremely well.  He had just a 2.23 GAA and a .921 save percentage.

Although the Sharks are a solid offense, they did play last night and should have some tired legs.  The Maples Leafs’ defense has been much better of late with just 11 high-danger chances against over the last 2 weeks.  At the price point of Samsonov tonight, I will be rocking him in GPP’s.  He’s risky but has huge upside at the current price.

NHL DFS Stacks

Edmonton 1 (McDavid, Draisaitl, Puljujarvi) + Nurse vs. Chicago

One of the top lines in the game of hockey vs. one of the worst teams in all of hockey?  Sign.  Me.  Up.  Chicago has been a disaster this season and over the last 2 weeks, they have gone 0-5-1 while giving up more than 5 goals per game.  They are someone we should always take full advantage of.  Tonight we’ll be doing that with Edmonton’s top line.

It’s going to be extremely tough to fit both McDavid and Draisaitl together, but I’m going to try my hardest to do so.  The two of them have combined for 12 points over their last 5 games.  Draisaitl has been the goal scorer while McDavid has been the assist machine.  My lean right now is to go with McDavid because he’s just so good.  This is a multiple-goal type of matchup for him.  To save some loot, I’m going to pair both or one of them with Puljujarvi.  Pulj as I like to call him is the type of player that has never lived up to their full potential and may never do so.  That said, he has some upside at his $3.6k price on DK tonight.  Lock and load this line tonight.

Detroit 1 (Larkin, Kubalik, Raymond) + Seider vs. Buffalo

While not as talented as the duo of McDavid and Draisaitl, the tandem of Dylan Larkin and Dominik Kubalik are trying their hardest to get into the convo.  The two of them have been playing some splendid hockey and I’ll be using them tonight in a great matchup.  The Sabres, while scoring a bunch of goals, are giving up a bunch of goals recently.  Over their last 6 games, teams have scored 3.67 goals per game against them.  Most importantly, they’re also giving up more than 14 high-danger scoring chances per game.  That’s absolutely something we’ll want to attack.

If we look at what Larkin and Kubalik have done of late, they’ve combined for 46 scoring changes over their last 5 games.  This is a great spot for them and if we want to add a cheap player to this stack, Lucas Raymond is absolutely in play.  At $3.9k on DK, we’re getting a player that has multiple games over his last 4 with multi-point games.  He’s as solid of a value as there is.

Chicago 2 (Domi, Kurashev, Raddysh) + Murphy vs. Edmonton

Do I think there are betting lines to play than this second unit for Chicago?  Absolutely.  However, I’ve given 2 pricy lines so I need to provide a line so that we can afford guys like McDavid, Larkin, Draisaitl, and Kubalik.  This second line for Chicago will do.  Edmonton isn’t some shutdown defensive type of team that can’t be had.  They’re still giving up more than 3 goals per game. While this line is super risky and could net us close to nothing, they also come in at just $11.1 combined.  Both Kurashev and Raddysh are my favorites here as they’ll play on the top power-play unit with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.  They definitely are risky but have some upside at limited cost.

Other Stacks: Rangers 1 and 2, Toronto 1 and 2, Edmonton 2, Buffalo 1

NHL DFS Top Value Defenseman

  • Ryan Lindgren – $2.8k on DK
  • Filip Hronek – $4.7k on Dk
  • Matt Benning – $2.6k on DK
  • Evan Bouchard – $3.6k on DK

Summary

We have some clear spots for offense tonight with Edmonton and Detroit.  I’ll be extremely heavy with both teams. You should be too.

Make sure to use our Projection model when setting lineups.

Over the last month or so we’ve started to see smaller Saturday night slates.  Tonight is no exception as we have ourselves a nice-sized 6 game slate of NHL DFS on DraftKings and FanDuel.  Tonight we should see some fresh legs as only the Columbus Blue Jackets are playing on the back end of back-to-backs.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

Goaltending

Juuse Saros ($7.9K DK/$8.1k FD) vs. San Jose Sharks – If you look at Saros’ recent game logs, you’ll see someone that has been extremely inconsistent.  Over the last couple of weeks, he’s had as many as 21 DK points vs. the Stars and as little as 3.5 vs. the Hurricanes.  The matchup tonight should be on the “easier” side as the Sharks have been abysmal of late.

Over the last month, they’ve been scoring just 2 goals per game.  Their offense has essentially vanished and has been one of the worst in the NHL.  The Predator’s propensity to give up shots and the Sharks’ inability to score goals of late has me loving this bounce-back match-up for Saros.  He’s under that $8k threshold on DK tonight so we won’t be paying a premium.  And we don’t like having to pay premiums on goalies.

Vitek Vanacek ($8.2k DK/$7.6k FD) vs. Seattle Kraken – Yes, the Kraken put a larger than normal number for them Wednesday night when they scored 4 goals vs. Saros and the Predators.  That’s essentially their weeks’ worth of goals so we should be good to use a goalie against them tonight.  Over the last month, the Kraken are averaging just 2.30 goals per game.  They have an extremely weak offense.

Tonight, we’re going to use Vanacek against them.  In a small sample size in the NHL this season, he’s shown some serious upside.  He has multiple games over 30 DK points.  Should he get the start tonight, I’m all in on him.  Whoever starts for the Capitals tonight should be in your pool of goalies.

Stacks

Washington 1 (Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, Wilson) + Carlson vs. Seattle

I haven’t used Ovechkin in quite some time when playing NHL DFS.  He’s been priced to a point where his production was leaving little value.  That said, he’s as cheap as you’ll ever see him.  For the first time since the start of the year, he’s priced under $8k on DK at just $7.7k.  That’s a steal.  I’m sure it will lead to him being more popular tonight, but at that price it’s hard to fade with the upside that he presents us.

While he has only 2 goals over his last 5, he’s been showing some signs of life as he has 14 scoring chances over that period.  I plan on pairing him with Kuznetsov tonight, who’s also reasonably priced at just $5.3k.  Kuz is right behind Ovie with 13 scoring chances over his last 5 games.  Seattle’s giving up 4 goals per game over the last month.  This line should do well tonight.

Boston 1 (Bergeron, Marchand, Debrusk) vs. Columbus

I highlighted above that Columbus is on the tail end of a back to back.  Even if they were rested, I would have attacked them.  With them likely having tired legs, it makes me want to attack them even more.  My priority with the Bruins tonight will be Debrusk at just $3.6k.  He’s been one of the hottest players in the NHL over the last couple of weeks with 5 goals in his last 5 games.

While he’s quieted down a bit over his last 2 games, love the upside in him tonight against a team that is giving up almost 38 shots per game over the last month.  I normally stick with 2 man stacks and my lean right now is to pair him with Marchand over Bergeron.  Marchand has a slight edge in scoring chances and that’s what we covet, scoring chances.

Edmonton 2 (Draisaitl, Kane, Yamamoto) vs. Montreal

Montreal has been a much better team since Martin St. Louis took over the realms.  That said, it’s still the same personnel that played poorly all throughout the first half of the NHL season.  I’m siding with Edm 2 tonight over Edm 1 because we get about a $1,500 savings going down to Draisaitl from McDavid.  Draisaitl has been showing some signs of life recently.  He has back-to-back games with multiple points and 3 goals and 8 points over his last 5.  At just $7.4k tonight we’re getting him at a huge discount from where he was about a month ago.

My plan is to pair him with Kane tonight.  The 2 have played fairly well together as they’ve combined for 12 points over their last 5 games.  The Oilers should face Montembeault tonight.  After a solid stretch of 6 games, he came back down to earth against the Jets on Tuesday giving up 7 goals.  While I don’t’ see him giving up 7 tonight, the Oilers should surpass the 4 goals Vegas currently has them at.

I also love Toronto tonight, but the Matthews line has absolutely burned me the last 2 games.  I’m a little gun shy going back to them tonight.

Other stacks (Van 1, Tor 1, CBJ 1, Bos 2, Mon 1 and 2, Edm 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Brandon Carlo – $2.9k on DK – Has 12 blocked shots and 13 shots over his last 5.  Averaging 5 shots + blocks over that stretch.  He presents us with a ton of value if his play continues.
  • Martin Fehervary – $2.6k on DK – Has 11 blocks over his last 5.  Doesn’t get the same shot volume, but he’s dirt cheap and is in a great environment tonight.
  • Cale Makar – 8 assists and 20 shots over his 5.  One of the top offensive defenseman in the league.  Expensive though.
  • Devon Toews – 2 goals and 5 assists over his last 5.  Colorado has done a great job getting offensive defenseman.
  • Tyler Myers – 13 blocks and 10 shots over his last 5.  Just $3.7k on DK.  Great Value.
  • Travis Hamonic – $4.4k on DK.  Average over 4.5 shots + blocks over his last 5.  Also a great value.

Vegas

Love the over on the Canucks 2.5 goals tonight.  While Toronto is a high-powered offense, they’re also poor defensively.  They’re giving up 3.75 goals per game over the last month.  Campbell has given up 14 goals in his last 3 games.  Canucks should put up at least 3 goals tonight.

Summary

Tonight’s the type of night where we have some high upside guys really priced down in Ovechkin and Draisaitl.  In my early builds, I have them continue to be my core 2 and surrounding them with at least one of their teammates.  With Defenseman tonight, I’m going strictly value.  There are 2 guys under $3k tonight on DK that have been giving us shots and blocks on a consistent basis.  They’ll give us a ton of salary savings.

Make sure to use our optimizer when setting lineups.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL DFS slate on Fanduel and DraftKings.  Tonight we have a smaller than usual 6 game slate.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

Goaltending

Jacob Markstrom ($8.1k DK/$8.4k FD) vs. Vancouver Canucks – The Canucks season has been quite the rollercoaster.  They started out miserably which caused the Canucks higher-ups to change coaches.  After Boudreau came aboard, they went on a nice roll.  Now, well they’re back to being the Canucks we saw at the start of the year. The Canucks offense has not been scoring of late.  Over the last month, they are scoring just 2.42 goals per game while putting over 31 shots per game on net.

With those numbers, we know there’s upside in Markstrom tonight.  While his last outing was a bit of a struggle, he’s been pretty solid over his last 8 games as he has a .909 save % and just a 2.76 GAA.  I’m more than likely locking Markstrom into my goalie 1 spot tonight if he draws the start.

Karel Vejmelka ($7.6k DK/$7k FD) vs. Buffalo Sabres – If not paying up for Markstrom tonight, I’m going to go with Vejmelka tonight.  This is a high-risk/high reward type of pick.  So if you’re averse to risk, go with Markstrom.  Vejmelka has shown some serious upside at the NHL level this season due to the poor defense in front of him.  The Coyotes have been giving up over 36 shots per game over the last month.  That equates to a ton of opportunity for Vejmelka.

The good thing for us and the reason I’m going here tonight is due to the fact that Buffalo just doesn’t score much. They’ve been averaging just 2.42 goals per game over the last month.  Of the teams on tonight’s slate, only Montreal is worse.  They have a sub 9% shooting percentage and that makes this pick even more appealing to me.

Another guy that piques my interest a bit is Mikko Koskinen ($8.2k DK/$7.9k FD) vs. Montreal Canadiens.  This game is going to be a battle of who is worse tonight.  We’ll get to Edmonton in my stacks section, but we have to remember that Edmonton has been extremely poor over the last month or so.  Montreal has been absolutely awful this year and we can attack them with goalies.  Does a poor offense outweigh a poor defense?  We’ll see tonight!

Stacks

Edmonton 2 (Leon Draisaitl, Jesse Puljujarvi, Warren Foegele) + Duncan Keith

It’s been quite a while since I recommended or stacked the Oilers.  That changes tonight.  Montreal is epically bad this year.  Through 42 games, they have just 23 points.  While Cayden Primeau may eventually be a good goalie in the NHL, he’s not there yet and it certainly doesn’t help when you have an extremely poor defense in front of you.  Over the last month, the Canadiens are giving up almost 40 shots per game and almost 15 high danger chances.  That’s just awful.

My core with this stack will be Draisaitl and Puljujarvi.  Between the 2 of them, they have 25 high danger chances over their last 5 games and 44 scoring chances.   Puljujarvi’s 15 high danger chances lead the team over the last 5 games and he comes in at just $4k on DK tonight.  If you look at his production over his last 5 it’s been nill. Positive regression catches up with him tonight. This pairing is going to cost us just $12.4k tonight.  Let everyone else flock to McDavid (also a great play) tonight.  I’m going with Draisaitl and Puljujarvi.

Carolina 2 (Trocheck, Svechnikov, Necas) + Slavin

The New Jersey Devils will more than likely have Jon Giles in net tonight.  While he hasn’t been awful, he’s giving up more than 3 goals per game over his 5 starts.  The Devils as a whole have been giving up more than 3.5 goals per game over the past month so we know there’s going to be some opportunity for scoring from the Hurricanes tonight.

My lean here is their second line and I’ll try my hardest to fit in Svechnikov tonight.  He’s been extremely solid over his last 5 games as he has 8 points.  He leads the Hurricanes over that stretch in scoring chances as well as shots.  My plan here will be to pair him with Trocheck.  The two of them have been playing well together and should be able to take advantage of the Devils tonight.

Toronto 2 (Tavares, Mikheyev, Marner)

This Maple Leafs offense may be one of the most powerful in the NHL.  They have 2 top lines that are stacked.  Tonight, I’ll be going with their second line as it’s been producing a ton of points.  Over their last 5 games, Tavares and Marner have combined for 11 points, 21 high danger chances, and 44 scoring chances.  They are clicking and get a great match up tonight vs. a Red Wings team that has been giving up some goals recently.

Over the last month, they are giving up close to 3.5 goals per game. That’s a number that we can absolutely target and we will tonight.  In net for Detroit tonight should be Nedeljkovic.  Over his last 8 games he has a 3.02 GAA and a -.26 GSAA.  Over his last 3 games, teams have scored 12 goals against him.  Let’s pick on him tonight!

Other stacks (Edm 1, Ari 1 and 2, TB 1, CGY 1, TBL 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Duncan Keith
  • Darnell Nurse
  • Rasmus Andersson
  • Moritz Seider
  • Victor Hedman
  • Christopher Tanev
  • Alex Pietrangelo
  • Damon Severson

Summary

Even though tonight’s a smaller than normal Saturday night NHL slate, it should still be a fun one.  We have a game between Edmonton and Montreal that has the potential to be a 6-5 game.  While I didn’t specifically mention them in my stacks, Calgary should get back on track tonight against the Canucks.  That top line of Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Lindholm has been one of the best in the NHL of late and should do well tonight.

Make sure to use our optimizer when setting lineups.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL DFS slate on Fanduel and DraftKings.  What was originally supposed to be a nice sized 9 game slate has turned into a smaller, but still fun 6 game slate thanks to some COVID postponements.  My goal here will be to provide you with a solid foundation for your lineup.

Win Daily Sports is proudly partnered with Monkey Knife Fight. MKF is offering you a FREE Win Daily Gold membership for three months ($150 value) simply for making your first deposit on Monkey Knife Fight. And if free gold isn’t attractive enough, they’re also offering a 100% match bonus up to $100 when you use promo code WINDAILY.

Before we dive in I want to highlight some terms you’ll see in my article that may be foreign to you:

  • Corsi – Any shot attempt (goals, shots on net, misses and blocks) outside of the shootout
  • Even Strength – Play where both teams have the same number of players (including goalies) on the ice. Includes 5v5, 4v4, 3v3
  • Power Play – Play where the team has more players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 5v4, 5v3, 4v3
  • Penalty Kill – Play where the team has fewer players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 4v5, 3v4, 3v5

Goaltending

Frederik Andersen ($8.2k DK/$7.9k FD) vs. Los Angeles Kings – Outside of the fact that the Hurricanes aren’t giving up much in the way of shots, I really like this spot tonight for Andersen.  The Kings just haven’t been scoring much over the past 2 weeks with a goals per game under 3.  The good news for is that even though the Hurricanes don’t give up much in the way of shots, the Kings do take a ton of shots.

My hope here is that the two teams meet somewhere in the middle and the Kings take enough shots to make paying more than $8k for Andersen worthwhile.  Before giving up 3 goals to Detroit on Thursday night, Andersen had been playing some stellar hockey as he had given up just 4 goals in his prior 3 games.  Look for him to get back on track tonight against the Kings.

Thatcher Demko ($7.5k DK/$7.3k FD) vs. Toronto Maple Leafs – This is far from a safe pick, but if we look past Auston Matthews tonight there’s not much else to love from the Maple Leafs.  Tavares is on the COVID list and was one of their leading scorers over the last 2 weeks.  Now you have your second line centered by David Kampf instead of Taveres which somewhat neutralizes William Nylander.

Toronto will not be sending out their best tonight and I’ll want to take advantage of it with a goalie that is playing some of his best hockey of the year.  Demko hasn’t scored under 17 DK points since late November and is becoming one of the more reliable goalies in the NHL.  He’s coming into tonight riding a 5 game winning streak.  While it’s always scary playing against the Leafs, Demko is playing great right now and should be in consideration when picking your goalie tonight.

I have little interest in any of the other goalies tonight so will be sticking with the two that I mentioned.

Stacks

Edmonton 1 (McDavid/Puljujarvi/Foegele) + Nurse vs. Seattle Kraken

Going into their last game against Columbus I mentioned in our discord that this top line was due for some positive regression.  Boy did they deliver with 74 DK points between them.  This line has combined for 60 scoring chances over their last 5 games, with 27 of them being high danger chances.  Still, they’ve only scored 4 goals, 3 of which were scored by Puljujarvi the other night.

There’s still some more positive regression coming for them and I want to make sure I have them in my lineup when it happens.  Outside of McDavid this line is dirt cheap on DK.  Foegele is only $2.8K and Pulj is only $4.4k.  What if I told that you that of all the players available on tonight’s slate, only 2 have a higher iCF than Pulj over their last 5 games?    Over his last 5 games Pulj has a iCF of 36 with 25 scoring chances.  Him and McDavid are my priority here, but if you need the salary savings Foegele makes for a great value.

New Jersey 1 (Hughes/Zacha/Bratt) + Hamilton vs. Detroit Red Wings

Yes, I know that the Devils only have a 2.25 goal total coming into tonight’s slate.  Vegas has that wrong in my opinion.  Detroit has been a mess defensively of late.  Over the last 2 weeks they have a corsi % of 47.58%.  Only Ottawa has a worse %.  They’re also giving up 4.5 goals per game thanks to some subpar goaltending.  While the Devils aren’t one of the powerhouse offenses we think of in the NHL, they stand a strong chance of exploding tonight.

With this stack I’m going to focus on both Hughes and Zacha.  Both guys have combined for 38 scoring chances over their last 5 games, 18 of them high danger chances.  If you want to go for a full stack here I wouldn’t talk you off of Bratt. He’s also been solid of late with 4 points in his last 5 games.  This trio also plays together on the top power play unit for Jersey.  Look for the Devils to make Vegas look silly for the implied total tonight.

Ottawa 1 (Norris/Tkachuk/Batherson) + Chabot vs. Philadelphia Flyers

This game tonight has the makings of a 5-4 game as both goalies in this one are trash and neither team likes to play defense.  Well they may like to play it, but are just not good at it.  Both teams in this one have corsi %’s below 50.  Below 50 in the NHL is bad.  I’m siding with Ottawa in this matchup because the Senators offense has been pretty good of late, outside of their 2-1 loss to the Lightning.  Lightning > Flyers.

If we think Ottawa offense, we automatically go to their top line.  Their top line has been scoring at will of late and is one of the hottest lines in the NHL.  Drake Batherson has been red hot.  In his last 5 games he has 10 points.  His line mates haven’t been slouches either.  Both Norris and Tkachuk have combined for 9 goals in the last 5.  This line is rolling and I just can’t see the Flyers slowing them down.  Look for them to score often tonight.

Other stacks (Both top lines for Philly 2, Carolina 1 and 2, Van 2, Tor 1 (if you aren’t playing Demko), Det 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Darnell Nurse ($6.8k DK) – Edmonton Oilers – 6 shots + blocks in his last 5
  • Jacob Slavin ($5.3k) – Carolina Hurricanes – 5.2 shots + blocks in his last 5
  • Thomas Chabot ($5.9k) – Ottawa Senators
  • Quinn Hughes ($5.1k DK)  – Vancouver Canucks
  • Travis Sanheim ($3.1k DK) – Philadelphia Flyers – Great Value
  • Jonas Siegenthaler ( $2.6k DK) – New Jersey Devils – Playing on the top D unit, great value

Summary

More than ever, you’ll need to keep on top of news tonight.  Covid is running rampant in the NHL right now and we’re seeing scratches right up until games start.  I can’t preface this enough, make sure you have pivots ready to your lineups.  Games are getting postponed left and right.

With that all said, I anticipate this being a high scoring slate.  Only 4 of the teams playing tonight are giving up less than 3 goals a game over the last 2 weeks.  My preference in stacks are Edmonton, then Ottawa, then Jersey.  Between values like Foegele and then some of the Defenseman I listed in the Top Defenseman section, you should have no issue fitting top plays into your lineup tonight.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

Make sure you are using our optimizer here when setting lineups.

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  I’m Jared and I’ll be your host.  Tonight we have a nice sized 9 game slate where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL slate on Fanduel and Draftkings.

Goaltending

Juuse Saros ($7.7k DK/$7.2k FD) vs. Montreal Canadiens – Any chance I get I try to pick on the lowly Montreal Canadiens.  Offensively, they’ve been a mess.  Over the last 2 weeks they’ve been averaging just 2 goals per game on around 32 shots.  Quick math tells me that’s just an awful shooting % at just a shade over 6%.  So the Canadiens are shooting the puck, just with no success.

In Saros we have a goalie that’s been playing pretty well, but not great.  He hasn’t had a game under 14 DK points since early November so we know he’s not going to kill us.  There should be some upside with Saros tonight with how the Canadiens have been playing.  He’s one of my favorites tonight on FD as he’s only $7.2k there.

Jacob Markstrom ($7.6k DK/$7.9k FD) vs. New York Islanders – I’m chasing the ceiling with Markstrom tonight.  He’s had back to back stellar games with more than 26 DK points in both.  In his last game he shut out the Buffalo Sabres.  With the matchup against the Islanders tonight he’s facing another team here that has an extremely low shooting %.

Over the last 2 weeks the Islanders have just a 4% shooting %.  That’s insanely low and while I expect to see some positive regression with them at some point, I just don’t see tonight against one of the top goalies in the league.  This is the cheapest that Markstrom has been on DK since late October.  His price went down $900 on DK after his shutout.  I’m all in on him tonight.

Jack Campbell ($8.3k DK/$8.7k FD) vs. Pittsburgh Penguins – I’ll start by saying I’m going to live with my top 2 goalie choices tonight in Saros and Markstrom.  If you want to go the expensive route Campbell deserves some consideration.

He’s been lights out in November.  In the 8 games he has started this month he’s been under 20 DK points just twice.  The Penguins are getting healthy with Crosby back in the lineup but I don’t think they’ll be any match up for the surging Maple Leafs and Canadiens.

Stacks

Detroit 1 (Larkin/Bertuzzi/Raymond) + Seider or DeKeyser

I absolutely love Detroit tonight. They’re facing off against a Coyotes team tonight that’s just downright bad.  They are certainly priced up tonight but w/ the match up I get it.  The Coyotes have been giving up close to 33 shots per game over the past 2 weeks with a save % under 90%.  Any time I see that combo I’m automatically intrigued by the matchup.

The Coyotes also have a slate worst 42% corsi over the past 2 weeks.  Offenses are hammering them right now.  Any offense w/ the Red Wings starts with Larkin.  When he’s on the ice and the Red Wings score he’s always involved.  My priority here would be Larkin and Raymond.  Bertuzzi’s price is getting up there while the production hasn’t.  Bertuzzi is far more playable on FD tonight.

Vegas 1 (Stephenson/Stone/Dadanov) + Hague or Pietrangelo

Let’s start by saying that the Columbus Blue Jackets gave up 4 goals to the Coyotes on Thursday night.  The goaltending for them has been pretty shaky of late.  Merzlikins has given up 12 goals over his last 3 games after starting out the year pretty solidly. In 4 of his last 5 starts he’s had a save % under .900.

With the Golden Knights tonight we should be able to find some goals.  With Mark Stone back in the lineup the Golden Knights get back one of their key weapons.  He’s had an assist in each of his last 3 games.  My core in this stack is going to be Stone, Dadanov, and Hague.  Hague at just $3.6k on DK feels like an absolute steal w/ his production of late.

Edmonton 1 (McDavid/Puljujarvi/Hyman)

You know the drill.  When McDavid is on the ice, he’s in play.  Thankfully for us he gets a solid matchup tonight vs. a Blackhawks team that has one of the worst Corsi’s of any team on the ice tonight.  They’re Corsi % over the past two weeks is at 43%.  Only the Coyotes have a worse number of the teams playing tonight.

While I love Hyman, I’m more than likely going to pair him with Pulj tonight due to the savings.  Over his past 5 games Pulj is averaging nearly 3 shots + blocks so we know we’ll get some productivity out of him.  Look for McDavid to continue his dominance over the NHL Tonight.

Other stacks (Edmonton 2, CBJ 1, STL 1, NSH 1, Tor 1 or 2)

Top Defenseman

  • Zach Werenski – Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Seth Jones – Chicago Blackhawks
  • Charlie McAvoy – Boston Bruins
  • Nicolas Hague – Vegas Golden Knights
  • Dante Fabbro – Nashville Predators
  • Martin Fehervary – Washington Capitals

Summary

We have a fun looking slate tonight.  There are 4 games w/ a total of 6 and the rest of 5.5.  We should definitely see some offense tonight.  I can’t wait to see what a young Red Wings team can do tonight vs. an awful defensive team in the Coyotes.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  I’m Jared and I’ll be your host.  Tonight we have a solid 8 game slate where I’ll be highlighting some of my top NHL DFS plays on Fanduel and Draftkings.

Goaltending

Thomas Greiss $6.9k DK/$6.7k FD) vs. Toronto Maple Leafs – Greiss burned me last weekend when I made him my top goaltending pick, but I’m going right back to the well.  From a cost standpoint, Greiss has a great chance of returning some solid value tonight.  He’s been in the net 4 times so far this season and has reached at least 17 DK points in 3 of those outings.

He’s facing a Maple Leafs team tonight that has struggled to put the puck in the net.  They’re averaging over 34 shots per game and only scoring on average 2 goals.  Greiss should face a barrage of shots tonight and that’s what we want to see from our goalie. While there’s a good chance he lets in a few goals tonight, he also stands a great chance of getting that 35 save bonus tonight.

Spencer Knight ($7.6K DK/$8.6k FD) vs. Boston Bruins – This is strictly a DraftKings play tonight as I don’t want to pay $8.6k for Knight, let alone really any goalie.  Like Greiss, Knight is facing a Bruins that has been struggling to find the back of the net.  Of all the teams playing tonight, the Bruins have one of the worst shooting %’s to start the year.

They’re averaging 34 shots per game and only 2.5 goals.  At some point the Bruins are going to explode, I just don’t think it’s tonight.  Look for Knight and his fellow Panthers to continue to roll and get to 9-0 tonight.

Mike Smith ($7.7k DK/$8k FD) vs. Vancouver Canucks – Mike Smith is expected to return from the IR tonight and if he does, I’m a big fan of this spot.  You’ll notice a trend with my goal picks.  Pick a goalie vs. a team that shoots a lot but doesn’t score a lot.  Like the Maple Leafs and Bruins, the Canucks fit that mold.

On the year they’ve been averaging around 32 shots per game but only scoring 2.5 goals.  Any time I can try to snag a goaltender that has a realistic shot at getting the 35 save bonus on DK, I’m going to jump at it.  In Smith, we have that chance tonight as the Oilers have been giving up over 37 shots per game.  If Smith does not suit up tonight and they go with Koskinen, I’m also a fan of his.

Stacks

Edmonton 1 (McDavid/Hyman/Puljujarvi/Bouchard)

You could put any 2 scrubs on the McDavid’s line against the best defensive team in the league and I’ll still recommend his line.  In McDavid we’re witnessing the best player to the play the game since the Greztky/Lemieux era.  Sorry Penguins fans, McDavid is greater than peak Crosby and it’s not even close.

Over his last 5 games McDavid is averaging close to 3 points per game.  That’s an absurd pace and while there is always a chance that he gets a goose egg, I’m willing to take that chance.  Even at his price.  McDavid and his peers get to take on a Canucks team that has been prone to giving up some high danger chances as they’re giving up nearly 12 per game.  High danger chances equals a greater chance of giving up goals.  I love this line tonight and so should you.

St. Louis PP1 (Tarasenko/Schenn/Perron/Krug)

Vladimir Tarasenko is a must play on DK and IMO is also a free square.  I know, you must be thinking that I’m crazy for calling someone that is $6,100 a free square.  Tarasenko is on absolute fire right now and his price hasn’t even come close to catching up to his production.  He’s had 4 straight games with at least 20 DK points.  I don’t see him cooling down tonight as the Blues play arguably the worst team in the league tonight in the Blackhawks.

Of all the teams playing tonight the Blackhawks are averaging the most goals against at 4.5 goals per game to start the year.  The Blues stand a great chance to put up a big number tonight. Tarasenko will be your core here and if you want to get some savings and not play the PP1 from St. Louis, you could pair him with Robert Thomas (not the same guy from Matchbox Twenty).

Maple Leafs 1 (Matthews/Buntin/Nylander/Reilly)

If you end up fading Greiss tonight, I’d recommend using the Maple Leafs top line.  At some point the Maple Leafs are going to have their explosion and it could very well be tonight against a defensively challenged Red Wings team.  The Red Wings are giving up a ton of high danger chances so far this year.  In fact, no team on tonight’s slate is giving up more than them.  Giving up 15 high danger chances per game is going to bite you more often than not.

With the Leafs, it all starts with Auston Matthews.  While Matthews only has 2 points in his last 5 games, it hasn’t been for a lack of trying with his near 4.5 shots per game.  Over his last 5 games he has an individual corsi of 45 which leads all skaters on tonight’s slate.  He’s firing at all angles and at some point, they’ll find the back of the net.

Other stacks (Winnipeg 2, San Jose 1, Minnesota 1, Detroit 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Brent Burns – San Jose
  • Matt Dumba – Minnesota Wild
  • Seth Jones – Chicago Blackhawks
  • Oliver Ekman-Larsson – Vancouver Canucks
  • Evan Bouchard – Edmonton Oilers
  • Aaron Ekblad – Florida Panthers

Summary

We have a great slate tonight with 8 games on top.  I plan on prioritizing both McDavid and Tarasenko (DK) tonight and building their line mates around them.  If you want to game stack, the SJ/WPG game should be high scoring.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

NHL Playoff Preview (First Round)

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Playoff Preview (First Round). A little different than my daily game pick articles. The NHL Playoffs are finally here! After a grueling 56-game season we are down to 16 teams. With the nuances of scheduling this year, each team will have a mini bracket within their division and then each team who makes it out of their division will be re-seeded for the Final 4. Not too many surprises with who made the playoffs. Here are the 16 teams who will be playing in the First Round:

Image

We have some great First Round matchups. I will preview each series, post each series price and give my predictions. I will also keep a tracker for my entire slate of playoff bets, as I have some futures on who makes it out of their division, as well as who wins Lord Stanley. I will provide that info at the end as well as some general thoughts for betting the NHL Playoffs. Without further ado, let’s dive into the series.

East Division

#1 Pittsburgh Penguins (-150) vs. #4 New York Islanders (+121)

Season Series: Penguins: 6-2-0, Islanders: 2-4-2

Preview: The Penguins sport the best home record in the league and have home-ice advantage in this series. They should be fully healthy with the returns of Malkin a few games ago and Tanev is projected to be ready for Game 1. The Penguins had a great season and are well deserved to be at the top of this division. The Islanders started of the season very nicely and were battling for first, but things unraveled for them after the Trade Deadline. The Penguins are known for their offense and the Islanders for their defense, but both teams can handle their own on the opposite spectrums as well. The Penguins are 2nd in GF over their last 20 games while the Islanders are 30th. The major X-factor right now is the health of Islanders’ top goaltender Seymon Varlamov. Sporting top-5 goaltending numbers this season, if he is unable to play than the Islanders will have to rely on Russian rookie Ilya Sorokin, who has decent numbers himself but not to the standard of Varlamov. Two teams trending in opposite directions leaves me no choice in my prediction.

Prediction: Penguins 4-1

#2 Washington Capitals (+118) vs. #3 Boston Bruins (-143)

Season Series: Capitals: 4-4-0, Bruins 4-2-2

Preview: What a series this should play out to be. We have the 2018 Stanley Cup Champions versus the 2019 Stanley Cup Runner-Ups. We have the return of Zdeno Chara who spent 14 seasons with Boston and was the longest-tenured captain in the league before signing with Washington as a free agent in the offseason. Each team won 4 matchups against the other this season. The Capitals surprisingly are an underdog in this series, and that must be attributed to Boston’s recent form. They have been a freight train after acquiring Hall, Reilly, and Lazar at the Trade Deadline. The Bruins could not score pretty much all season but then finally woke up the last month. The Caps meanwhile have been battling injury concerns to their star players and also had to deal with the Tom Wilson/Battle of New York saga. The Bruins have been rolling and have been in the top-10 in offensive metrics over their last 20 games. The thing with the Capitals is their underlying numbers were not that good but they could mitigate that with their scoring talent. However, recently the Capitals haven’t been able to do that. Goaltending is also interesting for both teams as the Capitals will roll with the inexperienced tandem of Samsanov/Vanacek, while the Bruins will probably start with Rask but rookie Swayman could make a case for deserving that net. With the Bruins rolling and actually low key dominating their season series with Washington analytically despite it being tied 4-4, I have no choice here.

Prediction: Bruins 4-2

Central Division

#1 Carolina Hurricanes (-240) vs. #4 Nashville Predators (+190)

Season Series: Hurricanes: 6-2-0, Predators: 2-5-1

Preview: The Hurricanes have dominated this season series over Nashville winning 6 of 8. The Predators snuck into the playoffs on the curtails of Juuse Saros incredible goaltending. The Hurricanes offense has been rolling all season and there is no reason to see that slowing down here. A hot goaltender can change the complexion of a series, no doubt. But Saros will need to stand on his head to steal this one from Carolina. Nashville held their own in their matchups against Carolina this year despite only winning 2 of 8. Hurricanes offense, defense, and special teams have been better all season. The only edge you can really give to Nashville is goaltending. And there is a chance Mrazek/Ned can get on a roll and even out that edge. I feel generous to say the Preds won’t roll Carolina, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they do.

Prediction: Hurricanes 4-2

#2 Florida Panthers (+116) vs. #3 Tampa Bay Lightning (-143)

Season Series: Panthers: 5-2-1, Lightning: 3-5-0

Preview: The Battle of Florida. These teams do not like each other and this has the potential to be an absolute battle and best series of the first round. You could argue Tampa underperformed a little bit this year as the defending champs finishing 3rd in their division. But they were without their best player Nikita Kucherov all season and captain Steven Stamkos for the last 10 or so games. Kucherov is projected to be ready for the playoffs so we will see if he can come back right in stride or has some rust. The Panthers on the other hand had quite the season and outperformed expectations to a 2nd place finish in the division. A devastating blow to star defenseman Aaron Ekblad who sustained a season-ending injury with about 15 games to go. However Mackenzie Weegar has picked up the slack on the back end. Goaltending is where Tampa will display quite the edge with reigning Vezina winner Andrei Vasilevskiy in net for the Bolts and probably Chris Dreidger in net for Florida, with Bobrovsky and rookie Spencer Knight there in case Dreidger falters. With the Lightning having some injury concerns and coming off a long cup run, I am going against the grain here.

Prediction: Panthers 4-3

North Division

#1 Toronto Maple Leafs (-275) vs. #4 Montreal Canadiens (+210)

Season Series: Maple Leafs: 7-2-1, Canadiens: 3-6-1

Preview: The Maple Leafs have been viewed as the favorites to make it out of the North Division since Day 1, and are actually the only team with minus odds (-135) to make it out of their division of the entire league. They will be squaring up with a Canadiens team that has been hot and cold all season. They started off really hot and people were even thinking they might be better than Toronto, then went ice cold and fired their coach, before finishing the season relatively strong. Defense is their specialty but they’ve had to deal with multiple injuries on the back end. It’s unclear if they will go with their most expensive asset (Carey Price) or the goaltender who has performed better this season (Jake Allen) for this series. Nothing would surprise me and could potentially see the Canadiens pulling an upset if they get hot, but the Leafs are definitely the stronger team and should take care of this series.

Prediction: Maple Leafs 4-2

#2 Edmonton Oilers (-186) vs. #3 Winnipeg Jets (+150)

Season Series: Oilers: 7-2-0, Jets 2-7-0

Preview: Two teams that are going in opposite directions. Behind the incredible season from Connor McDavid, Edmonton has had a strong end to the season. Winnipeg has been reeling behind all sorts of defensive problems all season, as well as an injury to their strongest winger in Nikolaj Ehlers. Luckily for Winnipeg, Connor Hellebuyck is arguably the best goaltender in the league and the kind of goalie who can steal a series. The problem is the defense in front of him has been bad all year and towards the end of the season he had some games where he didn’t stand on his head. Oilers goalie Mike Smith has actually had quite a surprising season as a 39-year-old veteran on the last legs of his career. With the way McDavid and Draisaitl have been rolling all season, I cannot go against the best player(s) in the league.

Prediction: Oilers 4-2

West Division

#1 Colorado Avalanche (-335) vs. #4 St. Louis Blues (+255)

Season Series: Avalanche: 5-3-0, Blues: 3-5-0

Preview: The Stanley Cup favorite and Presidents’ Trophy winning Avalanche begin their Cup run against the 2018 Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis Blues. The Avs have probably the strongest and deepest team in the 16-team field this year. They’ve dealt with some COVID and injury issues all season but should be healthy rolling into playoffs. This is the biggest series discrepancy based on Vegas lines as well as my Model. The Blues have been inconsistent this season and Binnington hasn’t played to the level he did when they won the Cup in 2018. The addition of Krug in the offseason was supposed to cancel out the loss of Pietrangelo, but it hasn’t been that simple. The Avs are a wagon and even though the Blues have playoff experience, I will rely on the data and the models here.

Prediction: Avalanche 4-1

#2 Vegas Golden Knights (-240) vs. #3 Minnesota Wild (+190)

Season Series: Golden Knights: 3-4-1, Wild: 5-1-2

Preview: Viewed as one of the favorites to win the Cup coming into the season, the Golden Knights have quite the draw in the First Round. Losing the top seed and Presidents’ Trophy with the Avs win last night, Vegas goes from playing a weaker St. Louis team to a young and exciting Minnesota team. To make matters even worse Minnesota has had Vegas’ number all season with only 1 regulation loss for Minnesota in 8 matchups. Vegas is deep at every position and will be interesting to see if they roll out Fluery or Lehner in net, both goalies are more than capable. Minnesota on the other side has been riding the coattails of exciting rookie Kirill “The Thrill” Kaprizov. With stronger than expected defensive and goaltending results they cruised to a 3rd place finish in the division and face a team they have matched up well against all season. There is definite series price value on Minnesota if you are looking for an upset to happen as there always is plenty in the Stanley Cup playoffs. I’m going to ride with the team I am confident can make a Cup run, but would not be surprised either way.

Prediction: Golden Knights 4-3

Current Bets and Notes

My approach for this playoff season is to ride a few Cup futures, bet some teams to make it out of their divisions, and then take any series or series spreads I think have some value. From there I might bet an individual game where I see value on a team or think the other team has a good chance to even the series. I really like taking the Game 1 loser in a series I think will be very evenly matched. I also may hedge some of my futures out if the opportunity presents itself (i.e. Vegas makes it to the Cup, take the other team to win the series and profit either way).

These are the futures I have so far, which will be updated as the playoffs roll on, and will also be on the Sports Betting Picks page:

Excited for the NHL Playoffs! Going to be a roller coaster of emotions with upsets and lots of things you won’t expect, which is what makes it the best sport on earth. Let’s ride this wave!!

NHL Betting Picks Monday 5/3

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Betting Picks Monday 5/3. The Model took a break yesterday as there was only 1 game played with the Lightning beating the Red Wings 2-1. No value considering the Lightning were around a -300 favorite after losing to the Red Wings on Friday. The good news in the NHL blessed us with a monster Monday slate of games.

We have 14 games on the NHL slate tonight. Let’s take a look at the updated profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

Dashboard 1

To interact with the dashboard click here.

Dashboard Edges

  • Capitals Money Line (-115) over the Rangers
  • Rangers Puck Line (+1.5, -250) over the Capitals
  • Maple Leafs Money Line (-159) over the Canadiens
  • Predators Money Line (-182) over the Blue Jackets
  • Hurricanes Money Line (-240) over the Blackhawks
  • Penguins Money Line (-175) over the Flyers
  • Islanders Puck Line (-1.5, +106) and Money Line (-245) over the Sabres
  • Bruins Money Line (-240) over the Devils
  • Panthers Money Line (-129) over the Stars
  • Ducks Puck Line (+1.5, -121) over the Blues
  • Golden Knights/Wild Over (5.5, -112)
  • Oilers Puck Line (-1.5, +123) over the Canucks
  • Oilers/Canucks Under (5.5, +104)
  • Avalanches Money Line (-265) over the Sharks

Keep an eye out for Starting Goalies tonight.

My Picks

Senators/Jets Over 5.5 (-130): These two teams both have pretty sub-par defenses. The Sens give up 3.47 goals/game while the Jets allow 2.86. The good news is we are getting the Jets backup goalie Brossoit tonight, which is huge considering Hellebuyck is one of the best goalies in the league. The over is 4-3 in 7 matchups this season and both teams slightly rested with below averages goaltenders in net makes me love this over.

Kings/Coyotes Over 5.5 (+115): We are back on the plus money over. This one on the surface might seem like a stretch but the underlying numbers are there for us. Both teams are over 50% in their over win percentage this season. The Coyotes average 5.5 goals/game and the Kings are slightly below them at 5.65. They are 3-3 on the over this season in 6 matchups so seems like a coin flip, maybe even a little favorable for the over. So the plus money is what puts this play in range today.

Oilers -1.5 (+128): The Canucks looked like they had some life after coming off COVID and winning 2 straight against the Maple Leafs. They have gone 1-5 since and have not looked particularly good. The Oilers are 5-2 in their last 7 games and have been a very good -1.5 team this season (47% top 5 in the NHL). The Canucks are below average on +1.5 and with McDavid and Draisaitl rolling we like this play with the plus money tonight.

Penguins -1 (-112): The Flyers season is over and Carter Hart is done for the year, not that he has been good. The Penguins are fighting to get that top spot in the East and have been playing well even without Malkin. Since we have a monster slate I felt a need to find a 4th play and this one seems like a very solid play for good value. Teams trending in the opposite directions, look for Pittsburgh to run over their state rival.

NHL Betting Picks Day 3/17

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Betting Picks Wednesday 3/17 and Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Another undefeated night for The Model going 2-0 with a Lightning shootout winner and the Wild covering -1.5 winning 3-0 over Arizona. Let’s keep it going tonight as we have the luck of the Irish on our side today.

Let’s take a look at the updated profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

To interact with the dashboard click here.

Dashboard Edges

  • Jets Money Line (+100) over the Canadiens
  • Golden Knights Money Line (-230) over the Sharks
  • Kings Puck Line (+1.5, -205) over the Blues

Keep an eye out for Starting Goalies tonight.

My Picks

Jets ML (+100): Winnipeg is coming off a 4-2 loss to Montreal on Monday where they hung around but didn’t seem to have the extra juice. Carey Price has picked up his game in net for the Canadiens lately which has allowed them to put together some wins. I see a bounce back game for Winnipeg tonight and at plus money this provides us some good value.

Oilers ML (+110): The Battle of Alberta has lived up to the hype this year. These teams are about as evenly matched as it gets. Calgary won on Monday 4-3 putting the season series even at 2-2. Look for McDavid and Draisaitl to turn it up tonight and bounce back from Monday’s loss. At plus money this gives a slight edge to Edmonton at the current price which is why we like it tonight.

NHL Betting Picks Monday 3/15

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Betting Picks Monday 3/15. After a weekend hiatus we return. Friday was our last day of plays and we went 1-1 with the Avs handling the Kings and the Wild doing all the scoring but only getting 4 goals to miss on our over.

We have 9 games on the slate today including a 4pm tilt between the Predators and Lightning. Let’s take a look at the profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

To interact with the dashboard click here.

Dashboard Edges

  • Lightning Money Line (-315) AND Puck Line (-1.5, -122) over the Predators
  • Blackhawks Puck Line (+1.5, -175) over the Panthers
  • Capitals Money Line (-235) AND Puck Line (-1.5, +100) over the Sabres
  • Jets Money Line (+105) over the Canadiens
  • Oilers Money Line (+100) over the Flames

Keep an eye out for the Starting Goalies today.

My Picks

Free Picks

Canucks -1 (-114): The Senators are coming off a big win against the Maple Leafs last night. The Canucks are a little banged up but we are getting Demko in net. Tough to see the Sens put together back-to-back strong performances. Taking the -1 number to give us some more value from their -177 money line as I believe they will win by more than a goal tonight.

Jets Money Line (+105): Winnipeg is coming off of a great win Saturday against the Leafs while the Canadiens are coming off of a 3-1 loss to the Flames. We get the best possible goalie matchup here (Hellebuyck vs Price). The Jets are +7.2u as an underdog and +3.25u at home whereas the Canadiens are -3.7u as a favorite and -3.6u on the road. The Jets have some momentum and I like them to take care of business tonight.

Premium Pick

Blackhawks Money Line (+160): The Model sees some great value on this play as we are getting the best goalie matchup possible (Lankinen vs Bobrovsky). The Panthers have played well this year but the Blackhawks have also done a good job. And with this value it is too hard to pass up.
