Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for the 2021-22 season.

If you are new to my articles, NHL, or WinDaily Sports then I will tell you that my articles are not going to give you the chalk plays or the obvious plays. I try to dig in and find ways for you to build lineups for GPP contests. I will always point out those top plays to help you build cash but that is not the point of this article.

What happens in Vegas…

The saying is what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but not in this case. After a fun and carefree All-Star weekend, the NHL is back on the ice Monday night, but not without some issues. Jack Hughes is the first and probably not the last to pop up on the COVID list after the All-Star break. Make sure you keep tabs on the NHL news throughout the day on Monday for any other issues regarding this slate and the rest of the week.

On to the slate

I’m not gonna lie, this slate is not good. We only have two games so it is best to play light in my opinion. There is some irony in that the two teams we’d want to stack up are playing each other in Carolina at Toronto. In the other game on the slate is the two teams we’d generally want to attack with New Jersey in Ottawa. With the news that Hughes is out, that gives the Senators a bump and actually may make them my top team overall on this slate because of the matchup. Obviously, both Carolina and Toronto offer more upside but I wonder if that is where the majority of people will focus.

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Frederick Andersen ( @ Toronto)

Andersen heads back to Toronto where he spent the previous five seasons tending goal for the Leafs. Andersen is definitely in a tough spot against one of the top offenses in the league but the Carolina netminder was on fire heading into the All-Star break. In his last fourteen starts, Andersen has only lost once and has a .931 save %. Andersen also has only allowed 27 goals in those fourteen games for a goals-against under 2. I feel that people will prefer to use either goalie from the other game so Andersen could come in at lower ownership.

Other Options: In reality, all four goalies should be considered on this slate, but my favorite is Andersen and since I will be building multiple lineups I may have exposure to all four.

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Teams to build around:

Ottawa Senators

Ottawa is in the best spot in my opinion. New Jersey has lost nine of their last ten games and is allowing 4.1 goals per game during this losing run. Even though both Josh Norris and Drake Batherson are out, Ottawa still has a good enough offense to put up a big score on Monday

Ottawa’s top line now consists of Tim Stutzle centering Tyler Ennis (four goals in his last five) and Brady Tkachuk. This line is my favorite on the slate and has been the best for the Senators over their last few games. All three of these guys also skate on the top PP unit with defenseman Thomas Chabot and winger Alex Formenton who has been a welcomed surprise for the Sens this season. Formenton is on line 2 for Ottawa with Chris Tierney and Adam Gaudette, which is a good stack if you need to save salary to pay up for Leafs or Canes. Nick Paul is another cheap piece that you can use with Tierney and/or Gaudette for a power-play stack as well Outside of Chabot, Nick Holden is the only other dman I think I would use.

Other line stacks to consider

Toronto L1: Bunting-Matthews-Marner: Dmen to use: Rielly, Holl, Sandin

Carolina L1: Svechnikov-Aho-Fast: Dmen to use: Cole, Slavin, Skjei

Toronto L2: Kerfoot-Tavares-Nylander

Carolina L4 (Value): Necas-Kotkaniemi-Stepan – Necas plays on the first PP unit with Aho and Svech so he makes for a good value piece to use with either of them.

I will have some exposure to New Jersey, but we need to wait until after morning skate and see what they look like without Hughes. Make sure to check in discord in the early afternoon where I will have an update if one is available.

Another Massive Tuesday slate!

Unlike Monday where we had a nice manageable five-game slate, Tuesday has eleven games on the schedule. Five of the ten teams on Monday’s schedule are back at it on Tuesday including Toronto and New Jersey completing their home and home series. Florida, fresh off of putting 8 on the Blue Jackets head to MSG to take on the Rangers. Ottawa has to travel to Long Island to take on the Islanders and Vancouver is in Nashville for a Forsberg Tuesday!

One of the greatest rivalries in the NHL renews when Ovi and the Caps head to Pittsburgh to take on Sid the Kid and the Pens. Vegas returns home after a long east coast trip to find the lowly Sabres waiting for them but enough talking about games let’s give you some ways to navigate this huge slate.

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Since it’s such a huge slate and there are so many goalies in good spots, I will give you my rankings like I normally do on huge slates.

  1. Andrei Vasilevskiy ( vs San Jose) – This is strictly a DK play because of the extremely low salary. Vasi is only $7.4K and I don’t know why but I want to take advantage of it. Vasilevskiy has won 14 of his last 18 starts and owns a .919 save % in that span.
  2. Ilya Sorokin/Semyon Varlamov ( vs Ottawa) – Ottawa is on the second leg of back-to-back and the Islanders are well rest after their game Sunday night. Unfortunately you will have to be paying attention close to the start of this game because the Islander NEVER announce their goalie early and they are on the front end of a back-to-back
  3. Robin Lehner ( vs Buffalo) – Lehner went 2-1 during the Knights easter road trip allowing just four goals and earning a shutout against the Capitals.
  4. Anton Forsberg ( @ NY Islanders) – Forsberg has actually been really good in his last ten starts posting a 6-3-1 record with a .926 sv%. The Islanders also don’t score much only averaging 2.7 goals per game in their last 10 and rank 30th on the season averaging 2.38 per game. Forsberg has only allowed more than 2 goals twice in those 10 game as well and held teams like Carolina, Tampa Bay (x2), and Florida to two goals or less.
  5. Juuse Saros ( vs Vancouver) – Saros is having a Vezina worthy season and gets the Canucks on the second night of a road back-to-back.
  6. Boston Bruins Starter (vs Seattle) – It could be one of three goalies starting for the Bruins on Tuesday, but whoever it is should have a good night against the Kraken

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Teams to build around:

Colorado is hosting the Coyotes on Tuesday and they will be the team everyone stacks, but on a slate this large we don’t need to worry about ownership. You all know that Colorado is the play, so I won’t bother you with why to play them. Colorado PP1 is where I would go, but there are so many ways to build with the Avs that you should just do what fits your build. I build multiple lineups so I will have some top-end Avs but also look to use their depth in other builds as well.

High End Stacks:

There are so many ways to go on this slate and I will try to guide you through this, first with the high-priced stacks (outside of Colorado) and then some value stacks as well.

  • Vegas Golden Knights L1: Pacioretty-Patrick-Stone – Patrick is a place filler for Chandler Stephenson who is on the COVID list. Patches has not scored in two games sinc returning from injury so I would say he’s due. Pacioretty is expensive on both sites, but both Patrick and Stone are affordable to make this stack work. Dmen to use: Pietrangleo, McNabb, Theodore
  • Calgary Flames/Dallas Stars game stack: This game could go either way, we have two teams who can put up big time goal totals but also keep the score low. Both teams top lines are on the short list of top plays for me, but you also have some depth lines here as well. Calgary L2 – Mangiapane/Backlund/Coleman have been playing like a top line of late and give you from salary relief to fit Colorado in. The same goes for Dallas, their top line is where the money is but their second line has been great form recently. Dallas L2 – Benn/Seguin/Gurianov Dmen to use: Lindell, Suter, Klingberg
  • Nashville Predators L1: Forsberg-Granlund-Duchene – It’s Tuesday so that means we play Forsberg and he comes in with three straight two point games. Duhene has four goals and an assist in the last three. Dmen to use: Josi, Benning, Ekholm
  • Florida Panthers L1 and L2 : The Panthers are coming off an eight goal outburst on Monday and it was line three who got it done. I still will have exposure to that line on this slate, but the top 6 get their pound of flesh on Tuesday.
  • New York Rangers L1 and L2: Similar to the Panthers, the top six for the Rangers should have a big night on Tuesday. If you have the salary, a PP1 stack is where I would go first, but both Alexis Lafreniere and Barclay Goodrow are good value pieces if you can’t afford the PP stack.
  • Tampa Bay Lightning L2: Killorn-Stamkos-Joseph Dmen to use: Hedman, Sergachev, Foote
  • Winnipeg Jets L2: Connor-Dubois-Perfetti – Dmen to use: Dillon, Schmidt
  • Boston Bruins L1: Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak – Dmen to use: McAvoy, Carlo, Reilly
Value Stacks:

Nashville Predators L3: Jeanott-Sissons-Trenin Dmen to use: Josi, Benning, Ekholm

Tampa Bay Lightning PP2: Colton/Cirelli/Perry – Dmen to use: Sergachev

Boston Bruins L2: Hall-Coyle-Smith – Dmen to use: McAvoy, Carlo, Reilly

Seattle Kraken L2: Jarnkrok-Gourde-Appleton – Dmen to use: Larsson, Fleury, Dunn

New Jersey Devils L3: Johnsson-Mercer-Tatar – Dmen to use: Severson, Graves

Arizona Coyotes L1: Keller-Boyd-Schmaltz – Dmen to use: Gostisbehere, Stralman

Penguins vs Capitals

This game is usually pretty crazy, and on a smaller slate I would be all over this one, but both teams have been struggling of late. Washington is averaging 2.4 goals per game in their last 5 and Pittsburgh is averaging just 2.8 goals per game. I don’t think I will have exposure to this game, but I get it if you want to.

Happy Monday…said no one ever

Monday night we have one of my favorite size slates with five games on tap. I love slates like this because we have enough games to play GPP’s and be different without going too deep into line stacks but there aren’t too many games where it can get confusing.

There are two spots that I think will be extremely popular and while I don’t think it would be smart to fade you can be different. Florida is in Columbus who is on the second night of a traveling back-to-back and Edmonton is in Ottawa. Floriday is always a solid team to play and while they are better at home, they are still a threat on the road especially against a team like Columbus.

As for Edmonton, they added Evander Kane this week and he endeared himself to his teammates with a goal in his first game Saturday night. I know there is a lot of controversy surrounding Kane and while I do not agree with any of the things he has done, this article is about helping you win money and Kane can do that. He is not a must-play as he was on Saturday with his price more than doubling from where he was in that game ($5.1K).

Another team in a great spot is the Maple Leafs at home to New Jersey, but more on them later. In the last two games on the slate, Vancouver is in Chicago in another of my favorite spots and Anaheim ends their long road trip in Detroit.

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

John Gibson ( @ Detroit)

Surprised? Well you shouldn’t be. If you know me, then you know I am an advocate for playing John Gibson on most nights, and Monday night is no different. Since the holiday break Gibson has been on another level. Detroit is not a team that strikes fear in the heart of anyone and Gibson is coming off a 45 save 1 goal allowed win in Ottawa Saturday. Gibson also gets no respect from either site pricing wise. With the number he producing against a team like Detroit he should be in the $8K range, but on Dk he is $7.6K and $7.1K on FD.

Thatcher Demko ( @ Chicago)

Another goalie who gets little to no respect in the DFS world is Demko. Demko leads the league in GSAA (15.73) and is 9th in the league among goalies who have started at least 15 games in high danger save % and saves. It’s possible that because he plays in Vancouver Demko seems to go over looked on a nightly basis but he is one of the best young goaltenders in this league. Chicago is 30th in high danger goals and 28th in HDGF% making me love this play even more. The Blackhawks don’t convert these opportunities and Vancouver allows a lot of HD chances.

Other Options: Marc-Andre Fleury ( vs Vancouver) – Vancouver is also poor at converting their high danger chances as well. Jack Campbell ( vs New Jersey), Sergei Bobrovsky ( @ Columbus)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Teams to build around:

Like I opened with, both Florida and Edmonton are two of the top teams to build around. Florida’s top six forwards are ALWAYS in play and Monday is no different. They are expensive, as is the top 6 from Edmonton but there are some good value stacks and plays on this slate that make paying up for a top line from Florida or Edmonton possible.

The Devils head to the Great White North

Toronto’s offense has been rolling of late and with the Devils rolling ECHL goalies of late, sorry but they are Devils fans. In their last ten games Toronto is averaging 4.2 goals per game and have only scored less than three goals once in that stretch.

Michael Bunting is one of the top value pieces on this slate and is coming off a hat trick on Saturday. Bunting skates on the Leafs top line with Auston Matthews and Mitchell Marner. Matthews’ salary is hard to stomach, but both Bunting and Marner are priced below marke value in my opinion and make fitting this stack manageable. Toronto’s second line is also a great line to roll and may be lesser owned than the top line pieces.

If like me, you want exposure to Toronto but also want to pay up for Edmonton or Florida you need to go value here. Bunting plays on the Leafs’ second PP unit with Jason Spezza and Ilya Mikheyev. You can use either or both of those two forwards, or go with one (I’d suggest Mikheyev) and use a cheap defenseman in Rasmus Sandin. With so many spots to pay up for tonight this is a slate I’d suggest building multiple lineups and maybe max entering a 3 max entry contest as opposed to just doing one single entry build. I would focus around the three teams I mentioned and build around them and go with pieces or stacks from the value lines I go over below.

We are gonna need a whole lotta value!

So I can stay on brand, my top value stack is the Floriday Panthers 3rd line of Mason Marchment/Anton Lundell/Sam Reinhart. Lundell and Marchment have been on fire lately, especially Lundell. In his last 15 games Lundell has 14 points and is priced super cheap on DK. Dmen to use: Gustav Forsling, Brandon Montour

Anaheim is another team that has some value pieces you can use to help fit the expensive stacks. Sam Steel paired with Max Comtois is an interesting 2 man stack. Comtois plays on the first PP unit despite playing on the fourth line and Steel has five points in the Ducks last five. If you can afford to roster Trevor Zegras then pairing him with Sam Carrick who is near min price makes for a good L2 mini stack or pairing them with a dman for a 3 man. Dmen to use: Hampus Lindholm, Kevin Shattenkirk

Since Florida is on the front of end of a back-to-back there is a chance they start Spencer Knight on Monday. If Knight starts then Columbus is in play. I believe the Panthers will start Knight and save Bobrovsky for their game in MSG against the Rangers on Tuesday. The Blue Jackets 4th line of Robinson/Kuraly/Chinakhov has been playing really well, even contributing two goals on Sunday night. Dmen to use: Zach Werenski, Andrew Peeke

New Jersey L2: Pavel Zacha/Nico Hischier/Nathan Bastian Dmen to use: Damon Severson, Ryan Graves

Chicago L1: Brandon Hagel/Dylan Strome/Patrick Kane Dmen to use: Calvin de Haan, Connor Murphy

Friday 1/28 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back for another installment of the Friday Night Forecheck here at Win Daily Sports! Tonight, we get a nice five game slate. It’s not too big, and not too small, and at first glance looks like a pretty good one. Good luck!

Goalies

Pavel Francouz – Colorado Avalanche: The Avs head to Chicago tonight to face the Blackhawks in a game they should pretty much dominate. They have a massive implied team total and should be able to handle the Hawks. The issue is limited upside here, so he may not be the optimal for GPPs tonight.

Braden Holtby – Dallas Stars: Dallas hosts the Washington Capitals tonight, and Holtby appears to be getting the start against his old team. This is a great spot for Holtby, as the Stars are a better team at home. There should definitely be some shot upside here, and the potential for a win is very real.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Cam Talbot – Minnesota Wild: The Wild head to the Big Apple tonight to take on the Rangers, who just played last night in Columbus. While the Rangers have been better on home ice of late, they could be due for a letdown, and Talbot could very well go in and steal a game from them tonight. NARRATIVE ALERT!! Talbot was the backup to Henrik Lundqvist for two years, and the Rangers are retiring Hank’s number tonight. Marc-Andre Fleury is a consideration for a VERY RISKY GPP ONLY play, against the Avalanche tonight, who could possibly be without their star center in MacKinnon. Even without him, this is a very risky play, but it makes sense given the shot upside and the fact that MAF loves showing up in weird, unlikely spots.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Boston Bruins Power Play – Patrice Bergeron/David Pastrnak/Brad Marchand/Taylor Hall/Charlie McAvoy: The Bruins head to the desert tonight to face the lowly Coyotes and their pretty bad goalie in Scott Wedgewood. This unit is high powered, and will be facing the second worst penalty killing unit in the league tonight. It feels like a Pastrnak night, so if you want to go straight BOS2, that works in this situation as well.

Colorado Avalanche 1 – Nazem Kadri/Gabriel Landeskog/Mikko Rantanen/Cale Makar: The Avs called up a center from the AHL last night, which could indicate that Nathan MacKinnon will be out tonight, after taking a rough looking, but totally clean (THERE I SAID IT!) hit from Taylor Hall the other night. Even if Mac can’t go tonight, this is a nice play with Kadri in the top line at C. Kadri has been more than adequate replacing Mac as needed, and this line is in a great spot tonight. Make sure you keep an eye on news through the day, and if MacKinnon does go, then he goes in Kadri’s place.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Dallas Stars 1 – Roope Hintz/Jason Robertson/Joe Pavelski/Miro Heiskanen: The Stars are a much better team on home ice, and tonight they host the Capitals. This even strength matchup bodes well for the Stars, as this line should see much of the depth lines for the Caps. The Stars at home generally match the Glendening line to the opposing top line, setting up this very nice depth matchup.

Minnesota Wild 2 – Frederick Gaudreau/Matthew Boldy/Kevin Fiala/Matt Dumba: A lot of folks will be on the top Minnesota line, and for good reason. The top line looks good as well here, but this second line should be more of a focus, simply based on even strength matchup. The Wild second line should be in for some very good looks tonight, as they face mostly the second line for the Rangers.

Pittsburgh Penguins 1 – Sidney Crosby/Jake Guentzel/Bryan Rust/Kris Letang: the Penguins host the Red Wings tonight, and frankly this game could go either way. The Pens played last night, and are starting a bad goalie in Desmith. With Nedeljkovic likely starting for the Wings, expect a lot of goals tonight, giving this line an opportunity to slide under the radar with Boston and Colorado on the slate.

Detroit Red Wings 2 – Pius Suter/Tyler Bertuzzi/Robby Fabbri/Moritz Seider: The second line for the Wings has been very good recently, and tonight sets them up with a chance to continue that. The Pens loosely match their top two lines against opposing top 2 D pairings, setting this line up for plenty of chances tonight. They will likely carry little ownership, so they are a very nice target for value tonight.

This article focuses on 1/27 NHL Picks for both DraftKings Sportsbook and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We analyze tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so that we can gain an edge on the field at large. Full rankings for each position for both sites are available below.

Thursday 1/27 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for a ten-game Thursday slate!

Full Game Odds/Totals and DraftKings Rankings can be found below as well as cash game considerations for each site.

Three Favorite Lines Per Dollar

Florida Two “Sam Bennett, Jonathan Huberdeau, Anthony Duclair”

This line seems to make the cut nearly every slate. However, given their affordable collective DraftKings price and the Panthers propensity for high total games and I guess it comes at no surprise. Tonight, we find Florida hosting the Vegas Golden Knights in one of the slate’s three 6.5 total games as of the time of writing. Their eight full line goals over the last ten games is fourth best in the NHL helping to cement their pricing status as criminal on DraftKings part.

Pittsburgh One “Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust”

The Penguins find themselves in quite a juicy spot later as -310 moneyline favorites as hosts to the Seattle Kraken. Phillip Gruabauer is projected to start in the opposing net and to say he has had a rough season is a bit of an understatement. All three skaters share correlation on the first power play unit with Bryan Rust my preferred individual play if just choosing one.

New York Rangers One “Mika Zibanejad, Chris Krieder, Julian Gauthier”

New York’s top line has been spitting hot fire recently and now gets to face the traveling Columbus Blue Jackets who are on the second night of a back to back. Tonight’s matchup features one of the three 6.5 total games on the night and it shouldn’t be much of a surprise which team ends up doing most of the heavy lifting in that regard.

1/27 NHL Game Odds and Totals

Main Slate of Games – Beginning 7 p.m. ET

New York Rangers (-220) at Columbus Blue Jackets (+190) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Anaheim Ducks (-130) at Montreal Canadiens (+110) – 5.5 Projected Goal Total

Carolina Hurricanes (-240) at Ottawa Senators (+195) – 6 Projected Goal Total

New Jersey Devils (+225) at Tampa Bay Lightning (-300) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Vegas Golden Knights (+140) at Florida Panthers (-160) – 6.5 Projected Goal Total

Los Angeles Kings (+120) at New York Islanders (-140) – 5 Projected Goal Total

Seattle Kraken (+245) at Pittsburgh Penguins (-310) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Calgary Flames (+110) at St. Louis Blues (-130) – 6 Projected Goal Total

Welcome to another Forsberg Tuesday!

It’s Tuesday and the Nashville Predators are playing, so you know what that means! Nashville is one of many teams that are in great spots on Tuesday as they head to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Kraken in Seattle. On Monday both Minnesota and Dallas came through for us like expected. My only downfall was not trusting my disdain for Binnington and going heavier on the Flames. Hopefully, you all cashed! Let’s get at it for Tuesday now!

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Unlike on Monday, we are loaded with goalies to choose from on this slate. I can’t pick just one to break down so instead I will rank my top ones for you in order of preference. There is a downside to the goalie selections tonight, they are all expensive. Luckily there is some good value in the skaters tonight (on DraftKings at least) that will allow us to fit in these expensive goalies.

  1. Juuse Saros ( @ Seattle) – Saros is the top goalie on the slate for me based on his current form and his matchup. In ten game since the start of January, Saros has only had 2 two games where he scored les than 19 DKFP and has had four games scoring 27+ DKFP.
  2. Tristan Jarry ( vs Arizona) – Jarry has been one of the top goaltenders in the league most of this season and a matchup at home where he is 10-3-2 with a .930 sv% means this should be another solid night for th All-Star.
  3. Ilya Sorokin ( vs Philadelphia) – Unfortunately we won’t know who is starting for the Islanders until pre-game warmups but with this not being a back-to-back situation I expect Sorokin to start. Sorkin is coming off a shutout of the Coyotes on Friday and beat this same Flyers team last week allowing just one goal.
  4. Aaron Dell ( @ Ottawa) – This is something I never thought I would write, but Aaron Dell is a decent fantasy option tonight. Dell hasn’t been good, as his 1-7-1 record, 3.92 GAA, and .893 sv% would indicate, but he has picked up some decent fantasy numbers of late. Dell is averaging 16.28 DKFP in his last four starts and has hit the 35+ save bonus twice in that span. It is a (very) risky play, but if you wanted to roll the dice on Dell tonight, I wouldn’t talk you out of it (if playing multiple GPP lineups)
  5. Frederick Andersen ( vs Vegas) – Vegas is on the back end of a road back-to-back and their offense did almost nothing last night. Andersen has been up and down of late but he seems to love playing Western Conference teams as a whole. In 13 starts against Western Conference teams, Andersen is 11-2-0 with a 1.92 GAA and a .934 sv%.

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Teams to build around:

Like with goalies, there are many ways you can go tonight on this slate. If you all have been playing with us here throughout the season then you know a lot of the line stacks we target regularly. I am going to do things a little differently today, I will give you a quick rundown of the top stacks that we normally go to, and break down a couple of the value ones to pair with them.

  • Pittsburgh Penguins L1 – Guentzel/Crosby/Rust: Home matchup with Arizona? Yeah, sign me up for this line! Dmen to use: Letang, Dumoulin, Matheson. Secondary stack: PP1 or L2 (Rodrigues/Malkin/Heinen)
  • Florida Panthers L1 – Hubrdeau/Barkov/Duclair, L2 – Verhaeghe/Bennett/Tippett, L3 – Vatrano/Lundell/Reinhart : In case you can’t tell, I really like Florida tonight, like on most nights. This team has a mix of top priced talent but also has some great value. I will have plenty of Panthers in my lienups tonight. Dmen to use: Ekblad, Weeger, Montour
  • Nashville Predators L1 – Forsberg/Granlund/Duchene: One of the most underrated lines in all of hockey and they can be your late night hammer tonight. I am locked in on this stack as one to build around tonight. Dmen to use: Josi, Ekholm, Carrier
  • Dallas Stars L1 – Robertson/Hintz/Pavelski: This line worked we on Monday so I am going right back to them tonight! Dmen to use: Lindell, Klingberg, Heiskanen
  • Edmonton Oilers PP1 – McDavid-Bouchard-Yamamoto-Puljujarvi-Draisaitl: Edmonton is a mess right now, but they have a matchup against the worst penalty kill in the entire league. Maybe this game helps them get back on track. It’s hard to keep two of the best players in the world down for too long, this team is due for another breakout game.
Carolina Hurricanes

This is not your typical value team, but there is some value in the Canes tonight. Vegas may turn to backup goalie Logan Thompson for his second career NHL start on Tuesday and we know how potent Carolina’s offense can be. Outside of Sebastian Aho, the remaining five forwards in their top 6 are $4.7K and under. Three of those wingers (Seth Jarvis, Martin Necas, and Nino Niederreiter) are priced in the low $3K range making Carolina a pretty affordable team to stack tonight.

This is something I rarely, if ever, do but with so many high-priced stacks on this slate I have interest in a fourth line tonight. Carolina’s fourth line has been productive lately and they are all incredibly cheap. The line of Derek Stepan, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, and Josh Leivo have combined for four goals and five assists in their last five games. Kotkaniemi plays on the second PP unit as well making him the priority of this stack. I know this seems out there and it may not work and they all may score zero’s tonight but they are worth the risk to fit two top stacks into your builds. Dmen to use: Slavin, Cole, DeAngelo

Other Value Stacks to consider:

Nashville Predators L3: Trenin/Sissons/Jeannot

NY Islanders L2: Bailey/Nelson/Beauvillier – This line could be one of the top plays on the slate when it’s all said and done tonight. Josh Bailey has five points in his last five (3G 2A), and Nelson and Beauvillier have four each. Dmen to use: Dobson, Mayfield

Seattle Kraken L2: Jarnkrok/Gourde/Appleton – If it appears Saros will be popular then it’s worth a shot at using a Seattle stack. This combo has been their most consistent line of late. Dmen to use: Larsson, Fleury

NJ Devils Line 3: Jonsson/Mercer/Zacha – Dmen to use: Severson, Jaros

Ottawa Senators L2: Formenton/Stutzle/Batherson – This line doesn’t really qualify as a value stack, but they all have been playing outstanding in the last five games that I want to have some exposure to this line. Dmen to use: Holden, Zub, Chabot (if you can afford to pay up at D)

A rare big Monday in the NHL

Typically on Mondays, we have small slates, but this week the NHL has blessed us with a big seven-game slate. Vegas at Washington looks to be the marquee matchup on the slate with both Anaheim at Boston and Los Angeles at the NY Rangers being the undercard. As for the other four games, they are potentially pretty lopsided.

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Kaapo Kahkonen ( vs Montreal)

If you’ve read my articles before or are in discord then you know I am not a big fan of paying up at goaltender, but this slate really leaves me little choice. Kahkonen is priced up, as he should be, against the Montreal Canadiens tonight at home. Since the beginning of January Kahkonen has been one of the best goalies in the NHL and appears to have an easy matchup tonight. In six games since 1/6 ( after Talbot was injured on 1/1), Kahkonen is 5-0-1 with an impeccable .937 save %. Kahkonen has allowed just 14 goals in those six games has hit the 35+ save bonus on DK four times in those six games. It will be a tough task for the Wild netminder to hit value tonight at his price, but I believe he can and I feel comfortable paying up for him tonight.

John Gibson (@ Boston)

Now, this is more of what you expect from me. Gibson’s matchup with Boston is not a safe one by any means, but there is plenty of potential in this spot for the Ducks goalie. Boston is a high-powered offense and averages the second-most shots on goal in the league (35.74) per game. On the other side, Gibson has been great this month stopping over 95% of shots faced (.952 sv%) while allowing just six goals in four games. Gibson has not faced the league’s worst during this stretch, ok well one game was against Philadelphia, but the other three were against Tampa Bay and Colorado twice. Those two offenses are two of the top ones in the entire NHL and he allowed just five goals in those three games. I know Gibson’s matchup with Boston will scare off a lot of people and that’s understandable, but you don’t get takedowns in DFS by playing all the safe, chalky plays.

Other Options: Igor Shesterkin ( vs LA), Pavel Francouz ( vs Chicago), Jonathan Quick (@ NYR), Jordan Binnington ( @ Cgy) – you all know I won’t play him, but he is in a decent spot against a Flames team who shoots the puck, a lot.

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Teams to build around:

MInnesota should run wild on Montreal

Can you sense a theme to this slate? Minnesota overall is in a superb spot tonight against a team that has not been home since before the new year. This will be the Canadiens’ tenth straight road game and in the previous nine games, they are 1-4-4 allowing 4.1 goals per game during that stretch.

Minnesota has won five of their last six as I mentioned above when discussing Kahkonen. In a bit of irony, during that six-game stretch, the Wild have averaged 4.1 goals per game, it’s like a matchup made in hockey heaven tonight. This is a team that has three different 5v5 lines we can stack in different ways tonight. The first, and obvious play, is their top line of Kaprizov/Hartman/Zuccarello. This line is one of the hottest in the league and they are priced this way so you will have to find value if you want to stack them. One way to get value with that line is to remove one of them for a defenseman from Minnesota. Jared Spurgeon would be an inexpensive way to go and he could replace Hartman since Hartman does not play on the top PP unit for Minnesota, but Spurgeon does. Joel Eriksson Ek and Matt Boldy are also cheaper options that play on that same unit as well. Montreal has the 29th ranked penalty kill in the league and takes a lot of penalties so I expect to see this unit out a lot tonight.

Since I expect Colorado to once again be the popular pay-up spot, the Wild will probably carry far less ownership on this slate. If you do want to get some Av’s exposure, and I know I will have some, then you can look at the value on the second and third lines. My preference would be line 2 with the aforementioned Matt Boldy joining Kevin Fiala, who has five points in his last five and centering this unit, Frederick Gaudreau. Both Jon Merrill and Alex Goligoski are cheap defensemen who have been racking up fantasy points of late with blocked shots (Merrill) and shots and assists ( Goligoski).

The stars shine bright in Philly!

Right behind the Minnesota Wild on tonight’s slate is the team who used to call Minnesota home, the Dallas Stars. Dallas has a solid road matchup in Philadelphia tonight and project as one of the top plays on this slate, behind Colorado and Minnesota.

Like with the Wild, Dallas’ top line is the way to go. Jason Robertson is a point per game player in his short career thus far ( don’t believe me, just follow Nick Alberga on Twitter), Roope Hintz has emerged as one of the leagues best centers, and last Joe Pavelski has been one of many veteran leaders on this team leading by example. I love this line tonight and will probably try and get as many iterations of it into my lineups as I can. There is a downside, they are expensive so you will have to find value to make it work. If you want to get different with the Stars stacks, might I suggest a two-man stack of Tyler Seguin and one of his wingers, my preference would be Jamie Benn, but Denis Gurianov is also playing well of late. On defense, both Esa Lindell and John Klingberg have been racking up the fantasy points, and real points, of late.

Other Stacks to consider:

NY Rangers 1: Lafreniere/Zibanejad/Kreider – Dmen to use: Fox, Trouba

Calgary Flames 1: Tkachuk/Lindholm/Gaudreau – Dmen to use: Hanifin, Tanev

Washington Capitals 1: Ovechkin/Kuznetsov/Hathaway – Dmen to use: Carlson (** IF HE IS BACK **), Schultz, van Riemsdyk

Boston Bruins 1: Smith/Bergeron/Marchand – Dmen to use: Grzelcyk, McAvoyYou can use Pastrnak in place of Smith for a very, very expensive PP stack as well.

Value stacks:

Montreal Canadiens 1: Lehkonen/Suzuki/ToffoliI know I love Kahkonen tonight, but if he is popular it’s not a bad idea to take a shot against him if you’re building multiple lineups, or if Hammond starts.

Los Angeles Kings 2: Arvidsson/Danault/Moore – Dmen to use: Durzi, Maata

Calgary Flames 2: Mangiapane/Backlund/Coleman – Dmen to use: Hanifin, Tanev

Washington Capitals 2: Wilson/Backstrom/Protas – Dmen to use: Schultz, van Riemsdyk

Anaheim Ducks 2: Grant/Lundestrom/Silfverberg – Dmen to use: Shattenkirk, Lindholm

Friday 1/21 NHL Breakdown

Welcome back to Win Daily Sports’ Friday Night Forecheck! Tonight, we get a big slate for a Friday, with 8 games. The goalie situation is interesting, and this should be a higher scoring slate. It feels like it might be a little tougher, but there are definitely good spots for us to look at tonight. Good luck!

Goalies

Ilya Sorokin – New York Islanders: The Islanders host the lowly Coyotes tonight, and this should be the safest pick on the board as far as goalies are concerned. If you are looking for a cash goalie, this is it, as the GPP upside is likely going to be limited.

Frederik Andersen – Carolina Hurricanes: Andersen and the Canes host the Rangers tonight, who have been pretty bad on the road recently, putting up just 2.4 goals per game over their last five road games. Andersen had a little bit of a shaky couple of games recently, but he should be due for a positive night. Shot upside should be there, as will some risk. On a slate like tonight, the targets should be goalies we trust, and Andersen is one of them.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Alex Nedeljkovic: The Red Wings are hosting the Dallas Stars tonight who are on the back end of a traveling back to back. Dallas has also only scored 1.8 goals per game over their last five road games, making this an interesting spot to look at tonight. The shot volume should be decent, and there is a very real possibility for an upside win here tonight.

Lines to Build Around

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

New York Islanders Power Play – Matthew Barzal/Jean-Gabriel Pageau/Anders Lee/Oliver Wahlstrom/Noah Dobson: As mentioned above, the Isles are hosting the Coyotes tonight, and while they have shown some flashes of improvement lately, the Islanders should be able to shut them down. The Coyotes are bottom 5 when it comes to penalty killing, and they take a decent amount of penalties per game, so there should be ample opportunity for this unit to get on the board. Throw in the fact that Wedgewood should be in net for Arizona, and this is a fantastic play tonight.

Pittsburgh Penguins 1 – Sidney Crosby/Jake Guentzel/Bryan Rust/Kris Letang: The Penguins head to Columbus to face the Blue Jackets, who are giving up 4.8 goals against per game over their last five home games. On top of that, the Jackets just played an away game last night. This line should see the top line for most of the night, setting them up for possibly the best spot of the night.

Florida Panthers Power Play – Aleksander Barkov/Sam Reinhart/Jonathan Huberdeau/Anthony Duclair/Aaron Ekblad: This unit is in a fantastic spot as well, as they take on the Vancouver Canucks in Vancouver. The Canucks are starting a goalie who only has three NHL games under his belt, with a whopping 4.35 GAA in those three games back in 16-17. This unit should absolutely roll tonight, and they will be chalky. Barkov/Huberdeau/Ekblad is the trio you want from here if you only want 3.

High Risk Lines

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Tampa Bay Lightning 2 – Anthony Cirell/Alex Killorn/Steven Stamkos: The Lightning head to Anaheim tonight for a matchup with the Ducks. At even strength, this line has a nice matchup, but Gibson is a solid goalie. That, plus the road matchup, is what makes them a higher risk play tonight.

Saint Louis Blues 3 – Robert Thomas/Brandon Saad/Jordan Kyrou/Justin Faulk: This line has been a fantastic value of late, and has a very nice matchup tonight against the Kraken. Seattle is looking like they will be rolling Joey Daccord in net tonight, who came over as a rookie from Ottawa in the expansion draft. His career GAA is 3.58, so STL is in a great spot tonight. Don’t ignore the power play unit for them either.

Chicago Blackhawks 2 – Jonathan Toews/Alex Debrincat/Dominik Kubalik: This is strictly a matchup based play, as this second line should see the likes of the top line for Minnesota tonight. This sets up a nice matchup that should afford them a bunch of opportunity.

Detroit Red Wings 2 – Pius Suter/Tyler Bertuzzi/Robby Fabbri/Moritz Seider: The Wings host the Stars tonight, and this second line has a really nice matchup against the second line for Dallas. Seider slots into the power play with Fabbri and Bertuzzi, so he is great for D man correlation. The Stars are on the back end of a traveling back to back, and giving up a whopping 4 goals against per game over their last five road games. This is a great low owned target tonight.

This article focuses on 1/20 NHL Picks for both DraftKings Sportsbook and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We analyze tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so that we can gain an edge on the field at large. Full rankings for each position for both sites are available below.

Thursday 1/20 NHL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Welcome back to the Hot Shot for a nine-game Thursday slate!

Full Game Odds/Totals and DraftKings Rankings can be found below as well as cash game considerations for each site.

Three Favorite Lines Per Dollar

Florida Two “Sam Bennett, Jonathan Huberdeau, Anthony Duclair”

The Florida/Edmonton has the highest projected total on the night at 6.5 as if the time of writing. Both Sam Bennett and Anthony Duclair are very fairly priced, giving us a high upside, low-cost method to attack this game. Over the last ten games, their ten full-line goals are good for second amongst all lines in the NHL with seven coming in their last three.

Pittsburgh One “Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust”

My expectation is that this will be the chalk de jour of the night with Pittsburgh a -280 favorite at home against Ottawa and this being an early game and all. This selection is less about current numbers which could certainly be better for these three and more about reputation and matchup. Of the three skaters, Bryan Rust is my favorite as an individual play due to the $1,500 or so price break from his two linemates. They all share a correlation on the Penguin’s top power-play unit.

Vegas Golden Knights Two “William Karlsson, Jonathan Marchessault, Reilly Smith”

Speaking of heavy favorites, Vegas is the biggest of the night, coming in on the money line at -360 as host to the Canadiens. Sometimes the numbers can indirectly tell us a story and when digging through recent sample sizes, one thing that popped out at me is how unlucky this line is. Over their last ten games, they lead all lines in the NHL in terms of shot attempts for including missed and blocked shots, with a who’s who list behind them such as Calgary, Boston, and Colorado’s top lines. Nonetheless, they only have four-line goals to show for it and this screams positive regression is forthcoming. Between this being a late-game and most people expecting a sleepy affair where Vegas just takes care of business, Vegas Two might be able to help us take down a tournament.

Another big Tuesday!

After two small slates on Monday, we are back with one big eight-game slate on Tuesday night. I hope everyone had a profitable day on Monday and hopefully we can keep that rolling into tonight’s slate!

We have six of the 16 teams on this slate on the back end of a back-to-back, including the Islander and Flyers who are playing the second of a home and home on Tuesday. Both Tampa and Florida are on the road out west and could bring some late-night fireworks with their potent offenses. The all of a sudden “red hot” Senators host a Sabres team who is coming off an overtime loss to the Red Wings on Monday. There is a lot to dissect in this slate, so let’s get at it!

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

After struggling throughout most of the season, Semyon Varlamov has seemingly turned it around in his last three starts. Varly had not achieved a score higher than 13.3 DKFP all season until his 12/16 start against Boston. That game Varlamov made 41 saves en route to a 3-1 Islanders victory and a 33.5 DKFP performance. The Islander veteran netminder is 2-1 in his last three starts scoring 33.5, 30.7, and 20.3 (his 1 loss) in those three games. We saw Sorkin dominant this same Flyers team last night and I see much of the same happening from Varlamov tonight.

When you look at Sergei Bobrovsky’s game logs this season it is like riding Expedition Everest in Disney World. His numbers go up and down all season. Bobrovsky and goal scoring machine that is the Florida Panthers take their show out west to Calgary, a team they just beat 6-2 two weeks ago. In that matchup in Florida, Bobrovsky stopped 47 of 49 shots on his way to having one of his best scores of the season, 34.9 DKFP. While I don’t know if we can expect that type of shot output from Calgary tonight, they are not scoring much of late and are extremely one-dimensional. Florida shut down the top line from Calgary, limiting them to just one goal in that game two weeks ago. With how hot this Panthers team is and with how the Flames have been struggling at converting, another win and 35+ bonus should be in the cards for Bob tonight.

Other Options: Andrei Vasilevskiy ( @ LA), Connor Hellebuyck ( @ Was) – Sneaky GPP play for me. The saves will be there and Washington is beatable at home, Cal Petersen ( vs TB), Jake Oettinger ( vs Mtl) – Cash game lock at home against Montreal on a back-to-back who got demolished by Arizona on Monday, Frederick Andersen ( @ Bos)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Teams to build around:

I am sure it will surprise no one when I say that my top team to build around is the…

Florida Panthers

I don’t care how good defensively the Flames have been this season, no team can stop this juggernaut right now. Will their run of offensive dominance come to an end at some point, I don’t know that it will honestly. This Panthers team is doing things that the Edmonton Oilers of the early ’80s would perk up and take a look at. In their last nine games, Florida has scored 4+ goals in EVERY SINGLE ONE. In most games, they have scored well above four including two games where they scored 6, one 7 goal game, and TWO games with nine goals scored. This team is averaging seven goals per game in their last three, these stats are just mind-blowing for an NHL team in 21-22.

I don’t have enough time and space to go over all their accomplishments in this stretch, but for me, all three of the Panthers’ top lines are in play. Hell, even their fourth line has been contributing. I will probably have Panthers stacks of some kind in every lineup I build on Tuesday and if they take me down with a poor performance, so be it. I would rather go down with a hot team that could win someone a GPP than take a chance fading and still lose anyway. If I had to pick one line from this team to build around for those playing just a single lineup, it would be the Panthers’ second line. Anthony Duclair has seven points in his last five games including four goals and Jonathan Huberdeau is averaging over two points per game in his last five with four goals and seven assists in that time. Aaron Ekblad is priced down on this slate at $6,500 on DK, so he is a lock for most Panthers stacks for me with a goal and eight assists in his last five. MacKenzie Weegar and Brandon Montour are also in play on defense for the Panthers.

Vancouver Canucks

If the Florida Panthers were the expected team to stack, then the Vancouver Canucks are a team I bet you’d never guess I’d be interested in. Vancouver will not break the bank on this slate on the road in Nashville on Tuesday with JT Miller being their highest-priced skater on DK at just $5,500. Quinn Hughes is next at $5,100 and everyone else is under $5K. There are a lot of teams on this slate that people will flock to, and if we want to balance out the potential chalk in Florida, the Canucks are a good way to do that.

It should be David Rittich in net for the Predators who are on the second leg of a back-to-back after Saros got beat up by St. Louis for five goals on Monday. Rittich has been bad for Nashville this season, in six appearances he has a .884 save % and is allowing nearly 3 goals per game (17 goals allowed in six games). Both of the Canucks top two lines will be good low priced stacks. My preference would probably be line 2 with the aforementioned Miller centering Brock Boeser and Tanner Pearson. On defense, it’s Hughes as the top pick, but also Tucker Poolman has been playing well of late and is min price on DK. Oliver Ekman-Larsson has also been picking up some shots on goal and blocked shots of late and makes for a decent option tonight.

This is also a game that I can see stacking, especially the Predators’ power-play units. Vancouver is dead last in the league in PK % and Nashville is a top 5 power-play. Don’t forget, it’s Tuesday and on Tuesday’s we play Forsberg!

Best of the rest!

Tampa Bay L1 and L2 – We saw what San Jose did to the Kings on Monday, and while I don’t expect 6 goals, we can’t rule it out. Dmen to use: Victor Hedman, Mikhail Sergachev

Boston L1 and L2: Boston has been red hot of late winning five straight and have scored 24 goals in those five games. It would appear that the David Pastrnak on L2 experiment is working so I would expect him to stay there for the time being. Craig Smith has two goals and two assists in his last four skating with the top line. Dmen to use: Charlie McAvoy, Mike Reilly

Ottawa L1 (Batherson-Norris-Tkachuk) – Buffalo on a back-to-back and a line that has been clicking all season, yes, please! Dmen to use: Thomas Chabot, Artem Zub, Erik Brannstrom

Dallas L1: (Pavelski-Hintz-Kiviranta) – Pay attention to the news today to see if we get a new linemate for Hintz and Pavelski. If not, Kivi is a min price option that makes this stack playable against Montreal. Dmen to use: Esa Lindell, Ryan Suter

Buffalo 2 (Skinner-Thompson-Tuch) – Dmen to use: Dahlin, Jokiharju

Value stack quick hits:

Los Angeles 2 ( Moore-Danault-Arvidsson)Dmen to use: Doughty, Roy

Philadelphia 2 (Lindblom-Laughton-Konecny) – Dmen to use: Ristolainen, York

Nashville 3 (Trenin-Sisson-Jeannot) – Dmen to use: Josi, Carrier

Buffalo 1 (Hinostroza-Cozens-Okposo) – Dmen to use: Dahlin, Jokiharju
