This article will focus on NHL Daily Fantasy picks for both FanDuel and DraftKings. Using advanced hockey metrics, slate analysis, and line by line evaluation, this article will point you towards what we think are the best plays for the night! Good luck!

Monday 10/25 NHL Breakdown

Hey everyone, and welcome to the Man Advantage! I am filling in to bring you the Man Advantage today, where we will break down a nice looking seven game slate. Truthfully, I like a lot of spots tonight, and I think it might be important to play 3 stacks in your lineups to optimize the exposure you get to a few really good spots. 3-3-2 stacks might be the best way to attack this one.

Goalies:

Spencer Knight – Florida Panthers: Wow, what a matchup tonight for the Panthers. More on the overall matchup later, but Spencer Knight has been a very solid young goaltender for them, and tonight he gets what should be a very easy matchup against the Arizona Coyotes. I expect Knight to be heavy chalk, as he is the biggest home favorite on the slate.

Frederik Andersen – Carolina Hurricanes: I truly see this as a good matchup for Freddie, up against his old team in the Leafs. The Leafs have been struggling mightily to start this season, and the Canes are in a good spot. Freddie should see a lot of shots, so the upside is definitely there for him tonight.

Elvis Merlizkins – Columbus Blue Jackets: Elvis has been a solid goalie to start the year, sporting a solid 1.63 GAA and 0.947 SV%. He has a matchup tonight against the Dallas Stars that should be low scoring. However, he should see a good amount of shots, and he is solid enough to have the upside that no one looks at tonight.

Bonus GPP Goalie Pick – Jacob Markstrom – Calgary Flames: Markstrom has been playing pretty well so far this season, sporting a 2.3 GAA and a 0.924 SV%. I expect him to see a lot of shots tonight against the New York Rangers, and if he can stand tall, he should have some decent upside.

Lines to Build Around:

These lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Florida Panthers Power Play – Alexsander Barkov/Jonathan Huberdeau/Patric Hornqvist/Aaron Ekblad: The Panthers are HEAVY favorites tonight, and they are going against Carter Hutton and the Coyotes. The power play is the best way to get access to all of the Florida lines, and they are all in good matchups. I expect the Panthers to be chalk tonight, and this power play look gives us a chance to be a little different than the field.

Tampa Bay Lightning 1 – Brayden Point/Steven Stamkos/Ondrej Palat/Victor Hedman: The other Florida team heads on the road to Buffalo. We just found out the other night that Buffalo is still Buffalo, as the B’s beat up on them pretty badly. I expect a similar outcome tonight, as the Lightning are in a different class altogether. This top line looks good with the addition of Stamkos to it, and in a small sample, they are generating 17.73 high danger chances per 60 minutes. Buffalo loves giving up chances, so this line should have plenty of opportunity tonight.

Washington Capitals Power Play – Evgeny Kuznetsov/Alex Ovechkin/T.J. Oshie/John Carlson: Everyone will likely be looking at the Florida teams tonight, and it is important to not forget about Washington. They have been quietly having a solid season so far, and they get a great matchup tonight against Ottawa. I like the power play look for the same reason I like Florida’s – you can get access to multiple lines.

Honorable mention: CARPP

High Risk Lines:

These are plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).

Carolina Hurricanes 3 – Jordan Staal/Nino Niederreiter/Jesper Fast: In their only home game, this line hard matched the second line for the Islanders. The third Hurricanes line is generating 14.18 high danger chances per 60, while the second line for the Leafs is giving up 17.37 high danger chances per 60 in a small sample. Translation: if this hard matching continues tonight, this line has a chance to have a ton of upside. It isn’t just about the high danger chances, though – the second Toronto line has given up a lot of standard scoring chances and shots in their small sample, making this line a high-risk, potentially high-reward play.

New York Rangers 1 – Mika Zibanejad/Alexis Lafreniere/Chris Kreider/Adam Fox: The Rangers have a home matchup tonight against the Calgary Flames. They have been somewhat underwhelming, and Markstrom for the Flames has been playing well, but I can still see them having a decent night tonight. The risk here is that Markstrom continues to play well. If playing Markstrom as your goalie, leave these guys out of that lineup.

Honorable mention: STL1, BUF1, LAK1

Cash Considerations “DraftKings”

Alexsander Barkov – C – Florida Panthers

Steven Stamkos – W – Tampa Bay Lightning

John Carlson – D – Washington Capitals

Spencer Knight – G – Florida Panthers

Cash Considerations “FanDuel”

Alexsander Barkov – C – Florida Panthers

Steven Stamkos – W – Tampa Bay Lightning

John Carlson – D – Washington Capitals

Spencer Knight – G – Florida Panthers

Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for the 2021-22 season.

If you are new to my articles, NHL, or WinDaily Sports then I will tell you that my articles are not going to give you the chalk plays or the obvious plays. I try to dig in and find ways for you to build lineups for GPP contests. I will always point out those top plays to help you build cash but that is not the point of this article.

After a successful Monday night, we turn our attention to Tuesday’s massive 11 game slate. When the slates are this large it is impossible to cover every game and team as I did on Monday’s four-game slate. What I will typically do on slates this large is help you weed through everything to pick out the games to attack and the lines and players to pair with the “big boys”.

Unlike on Monday, I expect it to take a hefty score to cash as well. We have some of the league’s best offenses and players on this slate. With teams like Tampa Bay, Colorado, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Edmonton on the slate those will be the focus of our builds, but I won’t necessarily break those teams down for you. I will instead find you ways to build around an expensive Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl two-man stack to get the most out of your lineups. But you didn’t come here to read my ramblings about a slate this large, you just want the plays, so without further adieu…

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Cash Game Goalie:

Juuse Saros ($8.3K/$8.4K)

On slates this large I recommend skipping cash games because there will be so many different ways to build, but with the teams, we have on this slate I can see a path for cash game builds.

Saros projects as my top-scoring goalie at home against the Kings on Tuesday. Los Angeles has the potential to put up big goal totals, but I don’t think that happens tonight. Saros is one of the league’s top goalies and has been solid to start the season. Nashville is winless on the season, but that ends tonight with a win at home against LA. Saros has seen a lot of shots in just two games, 56, and has stopped 51 of them, so we know the Preds defense is not shy about letting opposing teams shoot.

Other Options: Mike Smith (vs Anh), Cam Talbot (vs Wpg), Tristan Jarry (vs Dal)

GPP Goalies:

Alex Nedeljkovic ($7.7K/$7.5K)

Nedeljkovic had an outstanding rookie campaign for the Hurricanes last season, then got shipped off to Detroit. Surprisingly Detroit has come out swinging this season lighting up the scoreboard (more on that later). They have a really bright future and Nedeljkovic could be part of that but he can’t keep having third periods as he did in the opener when he allowed three goals to Tampa and the Wings lost in OT.

Last season with Carolina, Ned ended the season with 15 wins (23 games started) a save % of .932 (amazing!), and a goals-against average under 2. Now onto tonight’s opponent, Columbus. They do not instill fear in any team even though they put up 8 goals in their opener. Columbus has played Arizona and Seattle to open the season, two teams not even on their level. With such a huge slate, Detroit as a whole will go overlooked and we could get a win bonus and potential 35+ save bonus (on DK) from Nedeljkovic on Tuesday at sub 10% ownership.

Other Options: Thatcher Demko (@Buf), Connor Hellebuyck (@Min), Anthony Stolarz (@Edm), Elvis Merzlikins (@Det)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Like I mentioned in the open, this is a huge slate with 11 games to go through. The first thing I will mention is to play the Oilers, specifically McDavid and Draisaitl. I will mix and match who I play them with, but I expect to be 100% on McDavid. Edmonton has the Ducks on the back end of a back-to-back which makes them easy targets. There is a chance Nathan MacKinnon returns for Colorado tonight, so we need to watch that news. Lastly, we have Florida and Tampa playing each other which usually turns into a high-scoring affair and I expect tonight to be much of the same. That is probably my favorite game to stack up tonight. If you are like me and play multiple lineups (which I do suggest if you have the bankroll and time on slates like this) then you will need other teams to play besides the ones mentioned here and in the open.

On a Wing and a prayer

Detroit is once again getting a mention in this article, but when you have a slate this large certain teams will go completely overlooked, enter the Wings. I love this team tonight because of the goal-scoring prowess they’ve shown early on (9 goals in 2 games) and the fact everyone will focus on jamming in as many of the big boys as possible. These guys are cheap, only Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi are price higher than $6K on DK and only Larkin is over $5K on FD. I am interested in both of the Wings top lines, as well as their PP1.

Detroit Red Wings Lines courtesy of DailyFaceOff.com

My preference will be to fit in L1, but Robby Fabbri plays on the top power-play unit with that line and he can be had real cheap if you need him to replace a Bertuzzi. If you want to run a three-man stack with just two forwards and a defenseman I recommend using either Nick Leddy or Moritz Seider who are both super cheap on DK ($3K and under). Leddy plays on the first power-play, Seider is on PP2.

Islanders head to the Windy City

Chicago has been nothing short of terrible defensively to start the season so it’s hard to not love the Islanders even though their offense has been anemic so far early on. In their first three games, Chicago is allowing 4.3 goals per game, meanwhile the Islanders are only scoring 2 goals per game. Tonight, the Islanders finally get rolling and put up their season total in one game (four). One thing about Chicago is that they have been stout on the penalty kill, not allowing a goal in eight short-handed opportunities. Because of this, I will focus on using the Islanders 5v5 lines instead. Both of the Isles’ first and third lines are where I want to look tonight. Both Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee have notched goals this season and Kyle Palmieri has assisted on them both, so a line one stack looks promising with these three. On their third line, Oliver Wahlstrom has also scored, but both Zach Parise and JG Pageau are pointless. If you want to run a defenseman in stacks, then I would suggest Scott Mayfield or Noah Dobson.

Other top stacks

I mentioned I love the Florida/Tampa game stack but it’s both of their second lines that I prefer to use tonight, not their top lines.

Another game stack that will go completely overlooked is Vancouver at Buffalo. Both teams have shown they can score goals early on and can also give them up. My preferred lines from Vancouver would be their top two lines, but you can throw in Alex Chiasson for a cheap PP1 stack with any combo of Horvat/Pettersson/Miller/Hughes. As for the Sabres, look to their top power-play unit for pieces tonight. Vancouver has given up some PP goals this season and Buffalo has scored four in their first two games.

Pittsburgh has been hot to start the year with Sid and Geno. It hasn’t been the top line that has been scoring though, it has been their depth players. If you want to load up with a Fla/TB stack then I like the Pens third line as a really cheap value-stack against a tired Dallas Stars team.

Other Options: Line 1’s: Chicago, Montreal, Minnesota, Washington, Nashville. Other Lines: Nashville 2, Washington 2, Winnipeg 3, San Jose 2

NHL DFS: Defensemen

I have already mentioned a few defensemen above, but here are the top 10 for cash and GPP for me (not listed above)

Cash Game Defensemen

  1. Roman Josi (NSH) – If you are someone who likes to play 3 dmen, Josi is someone I can get behind doing that with
  2. Darnell Nurse (EDM)
  3. Dougie Hamilton (NJ) – See Josi
  4. Victor Hedman (TB)
  5. MacKenzie Weegar (FLA)
  6. Kris Letang (PIT)
  7. Cale Makar (COL)
  8. Brent Burns (SJ) – Another dman who plays like a forward sometimes.
  9. Seth Jones (CHI)
  10. John Carlson (WAS)

GPP Defensemen

  1. Erik Cernak (TB) – Super cheap, blocks shots, and has shown a scoring ability early on
  2. Danny DeKeyser (DET)
  3. Sean Walker (LA)
  4. Trevor van Riemsdyk (WAS) – Cheap piece to make Caps stacks work
  5. Radko Gudas (FLA)
  6. Brendan Dillon (WPG)
  7. Cody Ceci (EDM)
  8. Mark Pysyk (BUF)
  9. Chris Wideman (MTL)
  10. Tyler Myers (VAN)

Monday night we have a small four-game slate that is almost completely devoid of stud players. There is one game that does have some star power when the Rangers head north of the border to play the Leafs. Auston Matthews is expected to make his season debut in this game, but he is priced to the moon on both sites. With this being his first game since 20-21 post-season I don’t see paying up over $8K for Matthews on this slate.

Looking at the rest of the slate, Seattle continues their tour of the league in Philadelphia before they head home for their first home game in franchise history. Anaheim is in Calgary where my top play in net will be in action. St. Louis and Arizona is the last game on the slate which has the potential to be the stack-up game of the night for me.

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Cash Game Goalie:

Carter Hart ($8K/$8.1K)

Hart has the perceived easiest matchup on the slate at home against the expansion Seattle Kraken. Philadelphia has only played one game where the Kraken has already played three, all on the road. This Seattle team could be a little road weary at this point which could be helpful for Philly. Hart stopped 35 of 39 shots faced in the Flyers’ loss to Vancouver last week. Philadelphia is not a strong defensive team and only became weaker as they added offensive-minded defensemen in the offseason. I expect Seattle to pummel Hart on Monday, but I expect him to stand up and make the saves needed to propel the Flyers to a win. A 35+ save bonus on DK is definitely in play in the game.

Other Options: Jack Campbell (vs NYR), Jordan Binnington (vs Ari), Jacob Markstrom (vs Anh)

GPP Goalie:

John Gibson or Anthony Stolarz ($7.3K/$6.8K)

Anaheim is seemingly a revolving door on defense early in the season allowing 77 shots on goal in their first two games. On the flip side, Calgary took 47 shots on goal in their only game thus far, Saturday night in Edmonton. Calgary’s offense does not scare me, thus why I am high on whoever ends up in the net for the Ducks. Gibson is reportedly dealing with a minor injury and could play, but if not it is expected Stolarz goes. Gibson is one of the top goalies in the league, but Stolarz was solid against Minnesota last Friday. The Anaheim netminder stopped 41 of 43 shots in a 2-1 loss to the Wild. Whoever is in goal on Monday for the Ducks will be my GPP play.

Other Options: Philipp Grubauer (vs Phi)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

Looking over this slate, we don’t have any real standout superstars, minus Auston Matthews. If you want to run Matthews as a one-off or part of a two-man in cash, go for it. I will not talk you off that because I do expect he will carry some ownership. As for GPP, I will be looking to the late-night hammer play for my top even-strength line stack on Monday.

St. Louis will have the Yotes singing the Blues!

Looking over the line matchups tonight, I don’t see anyone on Arizona who matches up against the Blues’ top line tonight that can stop them. This line has produced three goals and an assist in their first game this season. I expect much of the same from this line on Monday. As for salary, they are not super expensive and make it easy to fit my top PP stack in easily.

St. Louis Blues line 1. Image via Dailyfaceoff.com

Realistically all of the Blues’ top three scoring lines are in play for me. You could swap out Saad for Vladimir Tarasenko for a power-play one stack. Also, you could swap out Saad for Torey Krug on defense for the same reason. Saad does see time on the second power-play unit so you could also take Perron out for Justin Faulk.

Power Plays from Philly!

Seattle has gone to the box a lot early on this season which is to be expected from a young team that is learning how to play together. On the flip side, Philadelphia was on the power-play three times in their opening game against Vancouver and scored once. Honestly, both of their power-play units are in play for me, but I would prefer to use their top unit. Travis Konecny scored the PP goal for Philadelphia in that game and he is my favorite play on this team once again. Keith Yandle is a nice inexpensive piece from that unit and is coming off a two assist game where he also added two shots on goal. James van Riemsdyk is an interesting pivot off of Konecny’s line one linemates (Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux). JVR plays on the third line for the Flyers but gets time on the top PP unit. He doesn’t see as much ice time as the rest of the unit and because of this, he will also be lower owned.

Other line stack to compliment the top:

I think Anaheim will be a low-owned option tonight as they are kind of priced up for their matchup with the Flames. I like young Mason McTavish as part of a PP2 stack with Kevin Shattenkirk or Cam Fowler on defense. Jacob Silfverberg also fits nicely into this stack. If you have the salary, Jamie Drysdale, Trevor Zegras, and Max Comtois are the preferred stack though.

Arizona is a cheaper stack to pair with St. Louis for a low-owned game stack. The Coyote’s third line has been one of their better lines and has near min-priced Travis Boyd at center. I prefer both wings, Lawson Crouse and Clayton Keller but if you need the savings Boyd can replace either of the wings. Obviously, if you are playing Coyotes, then Jacob Chychrun should be considered but he is priced up, which is fine. Both Crouse and Keller see time on PP1 with Shayne Gostisbehere so he is also a good pivot on defense.

Lastly, with the aforementioned Matthews return happening on Monday, the Leafs’ first line could get all the attention, but I prefer line 2 tonight. If you want to pay up or are making multiple lineups, then I do like the idea of a game stack here and adding either of the Rangers’ top 2 lines as well.

NHL DFS: Defensemen

I have already mentioned a few defensemen above, but here are the top 5 for cash and GPP for me (not listed above)

Cash Game Defensemen

  1. Ryan Ellis (PHI)
  2. Mark Giordano (SEA) – stack w/Sea PP1 – Philly did allow two PP goals on Friday
  3. Morgan Rielly (TOR)
  4. Adam Fox (NYR)
  5. Colton Parayko (STL)

GPP Defensemen

  1. Juuso Valimaki (CGY) – doesn’t see PP time but will get plent of minutes. Good for a cheap two man stack with Lindholm or Tkachuk
  2. Ryan Lindgren (NYR) – Recently bumped up to the top pair for the Rangers
  3. Victor Soderstrom (ARI) – Another cheap option to work in Coyotes stacks
  4. Justin Braun (PHI) – cheap shot blocking dman
  5. Rasmus Sandin (TOR) – Cheap and plays on PP2 for the Leafs. Has been hot to start the season.

It’s officially here, the opening of the 2021-22 season in the NHL! We start the season off with a small two-game slate. In the early game, we have the 2x Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning raising their banner against an injury-plagued Pittsburgh Penguins. The late-game focuses on the last two expansion teams as Vegas hosts newcomers to the league, the Seattle Kraken.

Five Seattle players (McCann, Johansson, Oleksiak, Jarnkrok, and Donskoi) entered into the league’s COVID protocol on Monday making them unavailable for Tuesday’s game. This certainly changes things both in real life and in fantasy. Vegas was already a huge favorite but this gives them a big bump. If you are playing cash games then Vegas will be where to pay up.

As for the early game, Tampa is the obvious favorite here. Pittsburgh will be without both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on Tuesday which puts them in a hole. While the Penguins do have some depth, they don’t have enough to potentially compete with this Lightning team. I expect Andrei Vasilevskiy ($8K, $8.7K) to be the go-to play in net, especially on DraftKings. If you are playing one lineup or single entry I won’t talk you off playing Vasilevskiy, but he won’t be my top goalie for GPP’s.

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Usually, in this section, I will give you my favorite cash game goalie and a GPP play. With only two games and with two obvious plays in net (Vasilevskiy and Robin Lehner [$8.2K/$8.4K]) instead, I will discuss the merit of playing the other two goalies in GPP’s.

Tristan Jarry ($7.4K/$7.9K)

Jarry is facing a fully healthy Lightning team and he will most likely be the lowest owned goalie on this slate. I don’t love Jarry but I will be playing up to 10 lineups on this slate and will probably have 20-30% exposure to Jarry. Tampa Bay was tied for 9th in the NHL in shots for and that is one of the top stats we look for when picking goalies in DFS. We want goalies who will get work and have the opportunity to make saves, and Jarry will most likely see the most shots on Tuesday.

Philipp Grubauer ($7K/$7.3K)

Grubauer is the cheapest goalie on both sites so he will get ownership on that basis alone I believe. Vegas, like Tampa, shoots a lot so Grubauer will see a lot of rubber coming his way. Grubauer only faced 31 shots in the preseason, but he stopped 29 of those shots. I won’t fall back on the stats for Grubauer from last season because they were with one of the top defensive teams in the league, Colorado, but this season he is with an expansion team who will have their bumps along the way.

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

On a Small Slate Like This, You Need to Dig Deep!

With the Tampa Bay top power-play unit being the top play on this slate, we will need to find ways to be different if you want to takedown a GPP.

NHL DFS is very similar to MLB DFS where you need to stack in GPP’s. Also similar to MLB, people are deathly afraid to stack players at the bottom of the lineup (3rd and 4th lines in NHL). This is where you can sometimes find the advantage you need on small slates. Looking at this slate, there is one third line that has me intrigued.

Vegas Golden Knights 3rd line (image courtesy of DailyFaceoff.com)

This line will be the forgotten line in the chalk Vegas lineups. Unfortunately, Janmark is also in the NHL’s COVID protocol so we will have to see who plays on this line in his spot.

Both Patrick and Dadonov are looking for a new start this season and I think Vegas is the perfect place for them both. This line is also super cheap on both sites ($10.9K combined) which is what we need if you want to stack the Tampa first power-play unit. What makes both Patrick and Dadonov intriguing is the fact they are expected to skate on the top power-play unit for the Golden Knights. You can run three forwards and add in Mark Stone or Mac Pacioretty or you can go with a defenseman in Shea Theodore if you have the salary for these guys that is.

What to do With Seattle

Seattle is an interesting team on Tuesday night. I assume they will be the lowest own team on the slate and we get some exceptional value with them. With all the players going into the NHL COVID protocol, there should be some players seeing minutes we didn’t expect, one of those is Morgan Geekie ($2.8K/$3.0K). With Jared McCann likely out now, Geekie COULD see first-line minutes and power-play time with the top unit. Seattle let Geekie play in three preseason games and averaged over 12 minutes per game. We will have to wait until morning skate on Tuesday to see where he lines up. Make sure to check in discord throughout the day for updates on Seattle’s lines.

I also like both the Penguins top two lines if you want game stack the TB/Pit game. Jason Zucker and Kasperi Kapanen are inexpensive players that give you exposure to the Penguins top power-play unit.

NHL DFS: Defensemen

With this being just a two-game slate, I will show you who the power-play defensemen are for the four teams since we will want to focus on getting them into our lineups first.

Tampa Bay: PP1: Victor Hedman ($6.3/$6.7K), PP2: Mikhail Sergachev ($3.4K/$4.8K) – Sergachev is a great value pivot for DK

Pittsburgh: PP1: Kris Letang ($5.8K), PP2: Marcus Pettersson ($2.7K/$3.5K), John Marino ($4.3K/Not on FanDuel)

Vegas: PP1: Shea Theodore ($5.7K/$6.2K), PP2: Alec Martinez ($5.5K/$4.6K), Alex Pietrangelo ($6K/$6.4K) – Martinez is one of the best FPTS/$ plays on this slate for FD.

Seattle: PP1: Mark Giordano ($5.6K/$4.6K) – Again, like with Martinez, Gio is one of the best FPTS/$ plays on this slate. PP2: Vince Dunn ($4.9K/$4.5K)

Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for a Monday night and we have a small 2 game playoff NHL slate to break down!

This will be my last NHL article for the 2021 season, so I just wanted to use the open to say thank you! Thank you to every single one of you who read my Man Advantage articles this season. Thank you for all the interactions in discord every game day. You all make this “job” of writing and producing content for WinDaily Sports fun and enjoyable each day. I look forward to getting back to talking line stacks, value Dmen, and why we don’t roster Jordan Binnington again in the fall, but in the meantime, enjoy your summer and I will see you for a new season in October (unless you are in the NASCAR discord, then I will see you this weekend!)

NHL DFS Breakdown:

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Montreal Canadiens

This series has no business going 7 games, but here we are. Toronto should have ended it in five, but anything can happen when you have two rivals like this. I think Toronto ends it on Monday, but it has game stack written all over it. Only twice in the 6 previous games in this series did these teams score less than 4 goals.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi leads the Canadiens in goals this series with 3 after missing game 1. Both Joel Armia and Tyler Toffoli have four points to lead the Canadiens. This makes it difficult to stack the Habs because none of them play together. Nick Suzuki does center the 2nd line with Toffoli so that is a two-man stack I am interested in. Adding Jeff Petry on defense gives you a nice 3 man with exposure to both PP units

William Nylander has been the Leafs’ best player this series leading the team in goals (4) and points (7). It does seem like Nick Foligno will be back for Toronto on Monday so that means Alex Kerfoot loses some value now. Both Alex Galchenyuk and Jason Spezza make for good value for the Leafs, especially Galchenyuk who plays with the aforementioned Nylander and Foligno.

New York Islanders @ Boston Bruins

Call me a hater or bitter, but the Islanders showed that they did not belong on the ice with the Bruins in game 1. They slipped through in round 1 thanks to some horrendous goaltending from Jarry and some amazing goaltending by Sorokin. Boston dominated the Islanders in game one, especially David Pastrnak. Pasta had a hat trick on Saturday night and he alone with the rest of line one is my top overall stack on this slate and should be pretty chalky. I do think you need at least some exposure to them on Monday night.

If you want to be different than using the Islander second line would be my choice. Anthony Beauvillier has been the Isles best player this postseason and would be the first place I go for Islanders exposure. Beauvillier leads the team in goals (4), points (8), and is second in assists (4). If I am stacking Islanders and want to be different, I would add Jean-Gabriel Pageau with Beauvillier as a PP1 stack. You can of course add Jordan Eberle or Mathew Barzal for a 3 man forward PP1 stack or go Noah Dobson to get a defenseman in the mix.

Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for a Tuesday night and we have a small 2 game playoff NHL slate to break down!

Since it’s just a two game slate on Tuesday I will just give you some plays I like for this small slate instead of doing the live stream. We should be back for Wednesday’s slate (if there is slate).

NHL DFS Breakdown:

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Montreal Canadiens

This is the second night of a back-to-back for these teams and we pretty much want the same plays as we did on Monday. I think Campbell is the best play in net on this slate, but on small slates like this it is ok to throw 1 or 2 plays against your goalie. Obviously Auston Matthews is one of, if not, the best plays on this slate. He will probably come in over 40% owned so a GPP fade is not a bad idea. You just have to hope he doesn’t go off for a multiple points so you can have a big advantage on the field. If Nick Foligno (LATE scratch on Monday) is out again then Alex Kerfoot becomes one of the top value plays on this slate. Kerfoot should be centering the Leafs second line again with Nylander and Galchenyuk.

Toronto Lines to Stack: Line 2 (GPP), Line 1 (CASH), PP1

Montreal Lines to Stack: Line 2, Line 3, Both PP units

Nashville Predators @ Carolina Hurricanes

This series is the definition of a shootout. Only once in four games have these teams combined to score under seven goals (games 2 – 3-0 Canes win). They have gone to double overtime in back-to-back games with Nashville winning them both. I don’t know how many lineups I will build on Tuesday but if I am doing MME I will definitely have a couple of shares of both Juuse Saros and Alex Nedeljkovic because each team has taken over 30 shots in each game except for Nashville in game 1. At the same time I will be having plenty of stacks in all different combos to maximize my exposure to the plethora of goals that could potentially be scored here. I think I just talked myself into doing MME on Tuesday.

Carolina Lines to Stack: Line 2, Line 1, Line 3 – Pay up for Hamilton on this slate

Nashville Lines to Stack: PP1, Line 1, Line 2, PP2 — Carolina is taking almost 5 penalties per game in this series so far and allowed a PPG in each of the last two games

Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for a Monday night and we have a 5 game playoff NHL slate to break down!

Things are being done a little differently for the playoffs. The NHL crew got together and broke down tonight’s slate in video form. You can watch “What The Puck?” with me, Allan, and Keith. We break down the slate from a DFS perspective and go over the best bets for Monday’s big slate.

NHL DFS Breakdown:

New York Islanders @ Pittsburgh Penguins

This is one of the games I want to stack up on Monday. My favorite line in this game is the Penguins’ third line. I also really like the Islanders’ top line, but I would play Beauvillier with Barzal and Eberle for a power-play stack. Pittsburgh has been taking some penalties in the last couple of games, and also Komarov is useless in fantasy.

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Montreal Canadiens

With Tavares still out due to his concussion, Toronto had to switch up their second line. I think they will be a low-owned play and a way to get exposure to Leafs without having to pay up for Matthews and Marner. As for Montreal, their second line is where I want to look. If you are playing SE or cash then I would use Jack Campbell as a pivot off Fleury. Both teams have some value on D in Edmundson (MTL) and Holl (TOR) which interest me tonight as well.

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Florida Panthers

This is another stack-up game, but it will also be popular. Both of these teams’ top lines will be pay up spots but I would rather play both team’s secondary scoring. Alex Killorn is one of the best plays in this game. In this series, Killorn has 3 goals and 4 assists and makes for a good cheap one-off as well. David Savard and Radko Gudas are two of my favorite cheap d men. Both get the fringe points and give you some much-needed salary relief on this slate

Edmonton Oilers @ Winnipeg Jets

This is probably our least favorite game on the slate. I do like Hellebuyck in net for the Jets on Monday, but other than that there isn’t much to like. Who am I kidding, you gotta love both McDavid and Draisaitl in this one. This is a must-win game for the Oilers and you better believe these two will show up. I am not stacking here though, this is a one-off type of game for me.

Minnesota Wild @ Vegas Golden Knights

Fleury is the top goalie on the slate for us and it’s not close. I do think he is ok to fade in GPP’s, especially in large-field tournaments. Outside of Kaprizov and maybe Fiala, we don’t want much from the Wild side of the game. Vegas’ second line is the top play in this game, but I don’t mind the top line being a contrarian play. Of course, both Pietrangelo and Theodore are in play for Vegas as well if you are paying up on D.

Things are being done a little differently for the playoffs. The NHL crew got together and broke down tonight’s slate in video form. You can watch “What The Puck?” Episode 2 with myself, Allan, and Keith. We break down the slate from a DFS perspective and go over the best bets for Tuesday’s Game 2’s.

NHL DFS Breakdown:

New York Islanders @ Pittsburgh Penguins

This was a back and forth affair on Sunday and we expect much of the same on Tuesday. We discuss the impact on the Penguins lines if Malkin returns to the lineup. I also breakdown how I prefer to stack the Islanders on Tuesday as well. Keith tells you about how the script has flipped in the futures bets for this series after the Islanders Game 1 win.

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Florida Panthers

Sam Bennett is suspended for this game for the Panthers and Keith and I discuss the impact that will have and who may fill in for the suspended center. Allan and myself also roll through the Lightning lines and tell you which one is the best option for Tuesday

Minnesota Wild @ Vegas Golden Knights

Allan and I agree that Vegas’ second line is the way to go in this game. They are the most consisted and have the familiarity that the Golden Knights other lines don’t have. We also discuss which Wild lines might be the targets for this game.

NHL DFS Breakdown:

Boston Bruins @ Washington Capitals

This is game 2 of this series after Washington won on a Nic Dowd OT goal on Saturday. We discuss the Washington goaltending situation in the video and give you our thoughts on if you should just avoid it all together. When it comes to this game you can definitely pay up for the the top players in this game but the secondary scoring is what I will target.

Nashville Predators @ Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina is the one seed in the Central Division and will be hosting the streaking Predators. Allan and Keith both disagree with my thoughts on who wins this series, but we do agree on some of the top plays for Monday. Allan discusses his thoughts on the Hurricanes and I give you some of the better value plays from Carolina.

St. Louis Blues @ Colorado Avalanche

Whether you are playing cash or GPP’s this is our favorite game on the night. Colorado is a huge favorite both on Monday night and in the series. We all agree that if you are playing cash, load up on Colorado, but in GPP’s I give you my thoughts on the Blues value. I also give me thoughts on Binnington, which if you’ve been with us all season you already know, I am not too high on.

Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for a Monday night and we have a big 9 game slate to break down!

This is the final Monday of the regular season, which was actually supposed to be last Monday, but thanks to COVID we get an extra week of hockey. Tonight we have a mixed bag of teams just playing out the stretch and teams fighting for playoff positions and spots. We also have two confirmed first-round playoff matchups on the slate, both in the Central Division. Tampa Bay and Florida and Carolina and Nashville will meet in the playoffs and on the ice tonight. Make sure to pay attention to any news regarding those games because we may get some lineup changes since none of these teams are playing for anything theoretically and may try to get some different players in their lineups.

NHL DFS: Goaltenders

Cash Game Goalie:

To be perfectly honest there is no one goalie I like in cash tonight. There are a couple of decent plays in Mike Smith ($7,500/$8,100) on the road in Montreal and if Alex Nedeljkovic ($7,800/$8,500) in Nashville tonight for the Hurricanes. Both goalies do seem a little overpriced on FanDuel but are in two of the better spots on the slate. Robin Lehner ($7,700/$8,400) at home to the Avalanche could also be a safe play IF Nathan MacKinnon is out again. For cash games tonight it seems like a wait-and-see approach for any late news about who may or may not start in net and be sitting out for teams.

GPP Goalie:

Ilya Sorokin ($7,300/$8,000)

This is a very important game for both the Islanders and Bruins to determine playoff seeding, and because of this, I assume both teams will be treating it as such. Sorokin has been great in net for the Isles this season as a rookie. In his last five starts, Sorkin has averaged 27.4 saves and is averaging 2.2 goals allowed.

Boston is a high-powered offense as we all know and they have been averaging 3.7 goals per game in their 10 games which is why Sorokin is a GPP play. Even though Boston scores a lot of goals, they also take a ton of shots and are allowing over 30 saves per game. You also need to look at who Boston has played in their last ten games. Eight of those ten were against the bottom of their division (4 games vs Buffalo, and 2 each vs NJ and NYR) and only two against a playoff team, the division-winning Penguins. If Semyon Varlamov starts he is just as good of a play as Sorokin.

Other Options: Juuse Saros ($7,400/$7,600), MacKenzie Blackwood ($7,000/$6,800), Thatcher Demko ($6,900/$6,700), Cal Petersen ($7,200/$7,100)

NHL DFS: Slate Overview

When it comes to picking the lines I want to stack and any one-off plays, I want to look at who is still playing for something. This doesn’t mean fade both of the Central Division games I mentioned in the open, or teams already of the playoffs. We know that teams like Boston, Colorado, Vegas, New York, and Montreal all have something to play for and will be playing like such.

If MacKinnon is back, then you can make a case for any of the top lines from Colorado, Boston, or Winnipeg for top-line stacks of the night. I know haven’t mentioned the Jets at all yet but they are in a good spot tonight against Vancouver and their top line is one of my favorite stacks on this slate.

If you want to be different, Edmonton’s top line will be that. Of course, the 100 point man Connor McDavid ($9,200/$9,400) will be one of the top one-offs but stacking him with his linemates will be different. Both Jesse Puljujarvi ($5,000/$4,500) and Dominik Kahun ($2,700/$3,500) will be overlooked in favor of the PP defenseman from Edmonton or Leon Draisaitl ($8,300/$8,600).

Finding Value in New Jersey (who knew?!)

Philadelphia is not a very good team defensively, I know this isn’t really news to any of you, which makes me love the Devils stacks tonight. Line 2 for New Jersey is where I want to start as they have one of the safer floors on the slate in my opinion. All three of these players are low priced on both sites and only Nico Hischier ($5,100/$4,900) is over $5K on either site. Pavel Zacha ($4,400/$4,600) is my favorite play of the three players on this line. In his last ten games, Zacha has 9 points, including three goals in his last three games. Zacha has also been great against Philly this season with four goals and three assists in seven games, the Devils winger is also averaging over two shots on goal per game against the Flyers. Jesper Bratt ($4,100/$4,200) has four points in his six games against Philadelphia this season. All three play on the Devils’ first PP unit along with Jack Hughes ($4,900/$4,700) and Will Butcher ($3,700/$3,500) on defense.

Other Top Value Stacks:

  • Florida 3 vs Tampa
  • NY Islanders 2 vs Boston
  • Dallas 2 vs Chicago — Love this line – 2 min priced plays on DK
  • Chicago 2 vs Dallas — This game is a good game stack tonight
  • Colorado 3 vs Vegas
  • Los Angeles 2 vs St. Louis — Gabe Vilardi cheap on PP1

One last thing, IF Colorado starts Johansson (as being projected at 6 am this morning when I wrote this) then STACK UP Vegas. With Patches out of the lineup all three of their top lines are cheap and will be great plays tonight.

NHL DFS: Defensemen Rankings

** Remember to always try and pair your defenseman up with forwards. One-off dmen are not usually the best option**

Top Defensemen

  1. Cale Makar (COL)
  2. Darnell Nurse (EDM)
  3. Roman Josi (NSH)
  4. Dougie Hamilton (CAR)
  5. MacKenzie Weegar (FLA)
  6. Tyson Barrie (EDM)
  7. Justin Faulk (STL) – StL2 is my top Blues stack tonight
  8. Alex Edler (VAN)
  9. Sean Walker (LA)
  10. Jeff Petry (MTL)

Top Value Defensemen:

  1. Gustav Forsling (FLA)
  2. Justin Braun (PHI)
  3. Jamie Oleksiak (DAL)
  4. Ryan Murray (NJ) – Cheaper option to using Butcher w/more upside
  5. Radko Gudas (FLA)
  6. Riley Stillman (CHI)
  7. Ethan Bear (EDM) – Plays PP2 with Kahun and Puljujarvi for a contrarian EDM stack
  8. Nick Leddy (NYI)
  9. Jack Rathbone (VAN)
