So you go into Thursday telling yourself you have built the best possible combination of lineups for this week’s PGA golf tournament, but by noon on Thursday you come to realize that your teams have no chance at winning: Dustin Johnson hit his ball in the drink, Patrick Reed got a two-stroke penalty from the sand and Jason Day withdrew due to back trouble. So what now? Is the four-day event over in a matter of hours? The answer is an unequivocal, “nope.” You, my friends, have the Showdown slate.
My major focus in the PGA Showdown slate (Day Two and Day Three of the slate specifically) is to identify good ball strikers who did not putt well on Day One. Now, it does take some additional analysis to determine what should be considered a “good ball striker”, but what I look for is good Tee-to-Green numbers in Round One plus good Tee-to-Green numbers on the season (so that we don’t just take a guy who may have had a good Thursday but is generally bad Tee-to-Green (“T2G”). I will say that the T2G analysis requires a deeper dive depending on what the particular course requires (for example, does it emphasize good strokes gained stats off the tee (OTT), on Approach (APP) or around the green (ARG)).
We can save the deeper dives for another article, but the main point is that you can expect positive regression with the putter from Day One to Day Two, and in short that means, take the guys who were good everywhere on the course on Day One but happened to be bad with the short stick. Maybe pepper in some guys that you were counting on before the tournament started (don’t just completely abandon your pre-tournament research), but didn’t pan out and you have your Showdown lineup(s).
As our subscribers know, the WinDaily team provides you with all of the information you need pre-tournament and during the tournament (we are always active before and during the tournaments on our Discord channel) so we can certainly help you along the way, but this is just one quick Showdown tip to chew on so that you don’t think your day is done if you have a bad Day One (and yes, I know it rhymes).
