3/13 NHL Bets
Edmonton Oilers -1.5 (-110) – DraftKings – 1 Unit
Edmonton let us down against the Blue Jackets last week but it’s back to the well here. This Washington team has done a tremendous job getting back into the playoff hunt seemingly out of nowhere. However, now they are on a west coast road trip that did not start very well in Winnipeg where they lost 3-0.
After a pair of disappointing losses against Columbus and Buffalo, the Oilers bounced back in a big way with a 4-0 win against Pittsburgh. Overall, they’ve won six out of their last eight games and face a team in the Capitals with poor underlying metrics. Washington ranks towards the bottom of NHL in several offensive categories and Edmonton has been stingy this year only allowing 2.84 goals per game.
The Capitals have very pronounced home/road splits as they are 17-10-5 at home and 13-14-4 away. Similarly, the Oilers are 20-8-2 at home and 19-13-1 away. Don’t let the record fool you, Washington has a -27 point differential on the season whereas Edmonton is +42. It was a nice run for the Capitals as of late to get back to relevancy but we’re going double or nothing on the Oilers covering the spread!
Colorado ML (-105) – DraftKings – 1 Unit
The Avalanche come in on the second night of a road back-to-back. For as good as the Avalanche have been in past seasons, the Canucks have been the better of the two teams this year. However, Colorado has turned it up as of late, winners of three straight and 7-2-1 over their last ten games. Two of their recent wins came against the Blackhawks and one was against the struggling Red Wings. However, you still have to admire the fact that they are pummeling some of these teams. As we speak, they’re smashing the Flames 6-2.
Vancouver comes in to this one in phenomenal form, winners of four straight including their latest victory 5-0 over Winnipeg. That’s the sort of win that sends a message. Their last three wins come against Winnipeg, Vegas, and the Kings, all potential Western Conference playoff foes. That said their underlying metrics suggest there has been a good deal of luck. Also, they have no doubt been beneficiaries of Thatcher Demko’s strong play in net.
There’s no way around the fact that losing Demko for an indefinite stretch of time will hurt. Casey DeSmith has been no slouch with a record of 8-4-5 to go along with a 2.85 GAA and .900 SV%. That said he has not been as good as of late and this is the sort of matchup that you need your goalie to bring their A game. Colorado has won the prior two games between these teams this season and should make it three straight wins over Vancouver.
