NHL Picks
Connor McDavid – .5 Goals – Over
You wouldn’t know by how good McDavid is, but his career high in goals is just 41. He currently sits at 40 goals through 69 games. It’s a pace that he really hasn’t hit in his career. Both times he hit 41 goals he had played in 78 and 82 games. He’s on pace to absolutely smash his career-high in goals and with just 11 points needed, he’s also on pace to hit a career-high in points.
We’re watching one of the best of our generation turn it up a notch, and it’s damn fun to watch. McDavid has scored in 4 straight and with a matchup vs. a Sharks team giving up 3.5 goals per game over their last 30, there’s a good chance he makes it 5 in a row. He’s one of my goal of the night picks on PrizePicks.
Auston Matthews – .5 Goals – Over
The Maple Leafs are one of the original 6 teams in the NHL, meaning they have one of the longest histories of any franchise out there. Tonight, Matthews has a chance to break the single-season record for most goals by a Maple Leafs player.
He’ll undoubtedly break it at some point, but I’d love to see him do it tonight so we can take advantage of it on PrizePicks. Matthews has goals in 6 straight and 12 of his last 13. There’s always a chance a goalie miraculously stops him from scoring, but I’m going to play the odds and say he scores a monumental goal for us tonight.
Juuse Saros – 3 Goals Allowed – Over
There’s something off with Saros of late. Outside of a 1 goal performance vs. a bad team in Ottawa, Saros has allowed at least 4 goals 4 times in his last 7 games. The teams he allowed them to were not what we consider high-powered offenses (Philly twice, Vegas, and Buffalo.) Tonight he faces his toughest opponent of late in the surging Wild, a team 9-0-1 in its last 10. I love the Wild for at least 4 goals and going with the Over on this PrizePicks projection.
Nathan MacKinnon – 4.5 Shots on Goal – Under
This is going to be a tough number for MacKinnon to hit tonight. He just faced Pittsburgh at home and only had 4 shots. Tonight, the Avalanche will be in Pittsburgh and the Penguins will be able to set the matchups against MacKinnon. MacKinnon has hit this number just once over the past 3 weeks and I don’t think he gets there tonight. I’m going with the Under on this PrizePicks projection.
Leon Draisaitl – 4 Shots on Goal – Over
The Edmonton Oilers duo of McDavid and Draisaitl are both playing some of their best hockey of the year, and it couldn’t have come at a better time as they’re clinging to the third spot in the Pacific Division. They are willing the team to as many victories as they can right now.
If we look at Draisaitl, he has 30 shots over his last 5 games. He is just firing at will and most are going through. Sharks give up more than 32 shots per game so we’re not talking about an opponent team that is stout defensively. Love the Over here, even though it’s a high number.
Summary
Tonight’s slate is loaded with stars and most have projections tonight that they should beat. Matthews could very well make this a historic night and I’ll continue to play him as a goal favorite as long as he’s on the ice.
