It’s an all Canada affair…well, almost.
Welcome to the NHL Man Advantage for a Wednesday night! Tonight we have just two games on the schedule with the first being the Capitals on the second night of a back-to-back in Edmonton. In the late game, Montreal heads west to take on the Vancouver Canucks.
Since this is just a two-game slate, I will dissect both games individually and give you the top plays from each.
NHL DFS: Game by Game
Washington @ Edmonton
Goalies:
With Vanecek starting Tuesday’s game in Calgary, it should be Ilya Samsonov’s net on Wednesday night. Let’s not sugar coat it Samsonov has been horribly bad of late. In his last nine games (7 starts), Samsonov has allowed 2.56 goals per game and has a .886 save % while just winning three games. If we go all the way back to the start of 2022, Samsonov has won just four games in 14 appearances and his goals-against goes up to 2.79 per game. I am not playing Samsonov on Wednesday and I suggest that you don’t either
As for Edmonton, hopefully, we get Koskinen in net because he has been playing well lately. In Koskinen’s last eleven appearances he has a .920 save % and has won seven games. With a team coming in on a traveling back-to-back Koskinen would be a top play on this small slate. On the other hand, if Mike Smith starts then we are game stacking this game and only play goalies from the late game. Smith is bad, almost as bad as Samsonov has been and if it’s him in net then we attack.
Washington Capitals
Like I said when discussing the goalies, we need to see who starts to make a decision on how to build. If it’s Koskinen and you prefer going with a goalie from the other game I would suggest using the Washington depth scoring. Washington’s second line would be my favorite stack for value. They are inexpensive and work perfectly with an Edmonton first-line stack. Both TJ Oshie and Nicklas Backstrom play on the first power-play unit so if we get Mike Smith pairing them with John Carlson or Alex Ovechkin would be a way to get exposure to Washington’s top players but in a different way than just stacking their top line. Conor Sheary can be used with Anthony Mantha and either Justin Schultz or Dimitry Orlov for a cheap PP2 stack as well.
Edmonton Oilers
As I mentioned above, I like the Oilers’ top line of Leon Draisaitl, Evander Kane, and Kailer Yamamoto. I did say that Koskinen could be the top goalie on this slate, I will have a lot of Demko in my builds so I do like the game stack in this game. Using Draisaitl and Kane with an Oilers defenseman and Capitals full second line stack is one of my favorite ways to build on this slate. Obviously, you can go with Connor McDavid and/or Zach Hyman with either or both of Kane and Draisaitl for a PP1 stack. Using McDavid will be popular, so fading him and hoping he stays off the scoreboard is ideal. Cody Ceci is the value dman of choice for me, and Darnell Nurse is the pay-up play.
Montreal @ Vancouver
Goalies:
Thatcher Demko is my favorite goalie on this slate. In his last 11 appearances (nine starts), Demko is 8-1 with a .919 save %. Now, Montreal has won seven of their last eight games but they are on the last game of a five-game road trip through Canada and could be tired and road-weary. I am not aware of who will be in net for the Canadiens at the time of writing, but whoever it is will be in play behind Demko and Koskinen.
Vancouver Canucks
Vancouver is not an easy team to stack because a lot of their top players don’t see 5v5 ice time together. The Canucks top line of Pearson, Miller, and Boeser is the only one I would stack together. Luckily for us, Montreal has an atrocious penalty kill and they also take a lot of penalties. They recently allowed four power-play goals in a game against Winnipeg. Both Boeser and Miller play on the top power-play unit for Vancouver and are joined there by Elias Pettersson, Bo Horvat, and Quinn Hughes. Outside of the skaters I mentioned there isn’t much else I want to use from Vancouver.
Montreal Canadiens
Similar to Vancouver, the Canadiens’ top line is the best option. Nick Suzuki has been a tear of late with four goals and six assists in his last five games. Josh Anderson has three goals in his last five, and Cole Caufield has two goals and four assists in the Habs’ last five as well. Both Artrruri Lehkonen and Mike Hoffman are two top value plays and play together on PP2 with Ben Chiarot on defense. Brett Kulak and Jeff Petry are two other viable plays on defense.
