Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for the 2021-22 season.
If you are new to my articles, NHL, or WinDaily Sports then I will tell you that my articles are not going to give you the chalk plays or the obvious plays. I try to dig in and find ways for you to build lineups for GPP contests. I will always point out those top plays to help you build cash but that is not the point of this article.
Happy Monday…said no one ever
Monday night we have one of my favorite size slates with five games on tap. I love slates like this because we have enough games to play GPP’s and be different without going too deep into line stacks but there aren’t too many games where it can get confusing.
There are two spots that I think will be extremely popular and while I don’t think it would be smart to fade you can be different. Florida is in Columbus who is on the second night of a traveling back-to-back and Edmonton is in Ottawa. Floriday is always a solid team to play and while they are better at home, they are still a threat on the road especially against a team like Columbus.
As for Edmonton, they added Evander Kane this week and he endeared himself to his teammates with a goal in his first game Saturday night. I know there is a lot of controversy surrounding Kane and while I do not agree with any of the things he has done, this article is about helping you win money and Kane can do that. He is not a must-play as he was on Saturday with his price more than doubling from where he was in that game ($5.1K).
Another team in a great spot is the Maple Leafs at home to New Jersey, but more on them later. In the last two games on the slate, Vancouver is in Chicago in another of my favorite spots and Anaheim ends their long road trip in Detroit.
NHL DFS: Goaltenders
John Gibson ( @ Detroit)
Surprised? Well you shouldn’t be. If you know me, then you know I am an advocate for playing John Gibson on most nights, and Monday night is no different. Since the holiday break Gibson has been on another level. Detroit is not a team that strikes fear in the heart of anyone and Gibson is coming off a 45 save 1 goal allowed win in Ottawa Saturday. Gibson also gets no respect from either site pricing wise. With the number he producing against a team like Detroit he should be in the $8K range, but on Dk he is $7.6K and $7.1K on FD.
Thatcher Demko ( @ Chicago)
Another goalie who gets little to no respect in the DFS world is Demko. Demko leads the league in GSAA (15.73) and is 9th in the league among goalies who have started at least 15 games in high danger save % and saves. It’s possible that because he plays in Vancouver Demko seems to go over looked on a nightly basis but he is one of the best young goaltenders in this league. Chicago is 30th in high danger goals and 28th in HDGF% making me love this play even more. The Blackhawks don’t convert these opportunities and Vancouver allows a lot of HD chances.
Other Options: Marc-Andre Fleury ( vs Vancouver) – Vancouver is also poor at converting their high danger chances as well. Jack Campbell ( vs New Jersey), Sergei Bobrovsky ( @ Columbus)
NHL DFS: Slate Overview
Teams to build around:
Like I opened with, both Florida and Edmonton are two of the top teams to build around. Florida’s top six forwards are ALWAYS in play and Monday is no different. They are expensive, as is the top 6 from Edmonton but there are some good value stacks and plays on this slate that make paying up for a top line from Florida or Edmonton possible.
The Devils head to the Great White North
Toronto’s offense has been rolling of late and with the Devils rolling ECHL goalies of late, sorry but they are Devils fans. In their last ten games Toronto is averaging 4.2 goals per game and have only scored less than three goals once in that stretch.
Michael Bunting is one of the top value pieces on this slate and is coming off a hat trick on Saturday. Bunting skates on the Leafs top line with Auston Matthews and Mitchell Marner. Matthews’ salary is hard to stomach, but both Bunting and Marner are priced below marke value in my opinion and make fitting this stack manageable. Toronto’s second line is also a great line to roll and may be lesser owned than the top line pieces.
If like me, you want exposure to Toronto but also want to pay up for Edmonton or Florida you need to go value here. Bunting plays on the Leafs’ second PP unit with Jason Spezza and Ilya Mikheyev. You can use either or both of those two forwards, or go with one (I’d suggest Mikheyev) and use a cheap defenseman in Rasmus Sandin. With so many spots to pay up for tonight this is a slate I’d suggest building multiple lineups and maybe max entering a 3 max entry contest as opposed to just doing one single entry build. I would focus around the three teams I mentioned and build around them and go with pieces or stacks from the value lines I go over below.
We are gonna need a whole lotta value!
So I can stay on brand, my top value stack is the Floriday Panthers 3rd line of Mason Marchment/Anton Lundell/Sam Reinhart. Lundell and Marchment have been on fire lately, especially Lundell. In his last 15 games Lundell has 14 points and is priced super cheap on DK. Dmen to use: Gustav Forsling, Brandon Montour
Anaheim is another team that has some value pieces you can use to help fit the expensive stacks. Sam Steel paired with Max Comtois is an interesting 2 man stack. Comtois plays on the first PP unit despite playing on the fourth line and Steel has five points in the Ducks last five. If you can afford to roster Trevor Zegras then pairing him with Sam Carrick who is near min price makes for a good L2 mini stack or pairing them with a dman for a 3 man. Dmen to use: Hampus Lindholm, Kevin Shattenkirk
Since Florida is on the front of end of a back-to-back there is a chance they start Spencer Knight on Monday. If Knight starts then Columbus is in play. I believe the Panthers will start Knight and save Bobrovsky for their game in MSG against the Rangers on Tuesday. The Blue Jackets 4th line of Robinson/Kuraly/Chinakhov has been playing really well, even contributing two goals on Sunday night. Dmen to use: Zach Werenski, Andrew Peeke
New Jersey L2: Pavel Zacha/Nico Hischier/Nathan Bastian Dmen to use: Damon Severson, Ryan Graves
Chicago L1: Brandon Hagel/Dylan Strome/Patrick Kane Dmen to use: Calvin de Haan, Connor Murphy
