Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for the 2021-22 season.
If you are new to my articles, NHL, or WinDaily Sports then I will tell you that my articles are not going to give you the chalk plays or the obvious plays. I try to dig in and find ways for you to build lineups for GPP contests. I will always point out those top plays to help you build cash but that is not the point of this article.
What happens in Vegas…
The saying is what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but not in this case. After a fun and carefree All-Star weekend, the NHL is back on the ice Monday night, but not without some issues. Jack Hughes is the first and probably not the last to pop up on the COVID list after the All-Star break. Make sure you keep tabs on the NHL news throughout the day on Monday for any other issues regarding this slate and the rest of the week.
On to the slate
I’m not gonna lie, this slate is not good. We only have two games so it is best to play light in my opinion. There is some irony in that the two teams we’d want to stack up are playing each other in Carolina at Toronto. In the other game on the slate is the two teams we’d generally want to attack with New Jersey in Ottawa. With the news that Hughes is out, that gives the Senators a bump and actually may make them my top team overall on this slate because of the matchup. Obviously, both Carolina and Toronto offer more upside but I wonder if that is where the majority of people will focus.
NHL DFS: Goaltenders
Frederick Andersen ( @ Toronto)
Andersen heads back to Toronto where he spent the previous five seasons tending goal for the Leafs. Andersen is definitely in a tough spot against one of the top offenses in the league but the Carolina netminder was on fire heading into the All-Star break. In his last fourteen starts, Andersen has only lost once and has a .931 save %. Andersen also has only allowed 27 goals in those fourteen games for a goals-against under 2. I feel that people will prefer to use either goalie from the other game so Andersen could come in at lower ownership.
Other Options: In reality, all four goalies should be considered on this slate, but my favorite is Andersen and since I will be building multiple lineups I may have exposure to all four.
NHL DFS: Slate Overview
Teams to build around:
Ottawa Senators
Ottawa is in the best spot in my opinion. New Jersey has lost nine of their last ten games and is allowing 4.1 goals per game during this losing run. Even though both Josh Norris and Drake Batherson are out, Ottawa still has a good enough offense to put up a big score on Monday
Ottawa’s top line now consists of Tim Stutzle centering Tyler Ennis (four goals in his last five) and Brady Tkachuk. This line is my favorite on the slate and has been the best for the Senators over their last few games. All three of these guys also skate on the top PP unit with defenseman Thomas Chabot and winger Alex Formenton who has been a welcomed surprise for the Sens this season. Formenton is on line 2 for Ottawa with Chris Tierney and Adam Gaudette, which is a good stack if you need to save salary to pay up for Leafs or Canes. Nick Paul is another cheap piece that you can use with Tierney and/or Gaudette for a power-play stack as well Outside of Chabot, Nick Holden is the only other dman I think I would use.
Other line stacks to consider
Toronto L1: Bunting-Matthews-Marner: Dmen to use: Rielly, Holl, Sandin
Carolina L1: Svechnikov-Aho-Fast: Dmen to use: Cole, Slavin, Skjei
Toronto L2: Kerfoot-Tavares-Nylander
Carolina L4 (Value): Necas-Kotkaniemi-Stepan – Necas plays on the first PP unit with Aho and Svech so he makes for a good value piece to use with either of them.
I will have some exposure to New Jersey, but we need to wait until after morning skate and see what they look like without Hughes. Make sure to check in discord in the early afternoon where I will have an update if one is available.
