Welcome to the NHL DFS Man Advantage for the 2021-22 season.
If you are new to my articles, NHL, or WinDaily Sports then I will tell you that my articles are not going to give you the chalk plays or the obvious plays. I try to dig in and find ways for you to build lineups for GPP contests. I will always point out those top plays to help you build cash but that is not the point of this article.
…and then there were four (games)
Sunday was originally going to be two separate four-game slates, but thanks to more COVID postponements, we now have one stretched-out four-game slate. This slate locks at 2 pm (eastern) with Vegas on Long Island visiting the Islanders. After that game, at 3 pm the Blues head to the great north to take on Winnipeg. In the two “late” games, both starting at 7 pm, Pittsburgh travels to New Jersey and the Kings play their fourth road game in six nights as they take on Ovechkin and the Caps.
NHL DFS: Goaltenders
Typically on short slates, it’s hard to find good goaltending, but on this slate, I think we have two stand-out spots in net that we can use. And the first one is…
Charlie Lindgren ( @ Winnipeg)
Lindgren has performed admirably for the Blues since they were hit by a rash of goaltender injuries and has earned his stay in the NHL and the starting spot over Jordan Binnington. Winnipeg is probably the stiffest test Lindgren has seen this season, but he appears to be up for it. Lindgren is cheap on both sites today which will possibly make him popular, though I think Lehner and Jarry might be higher owned. Lindgren has stopped 110 of 115 shots faced in his four starts (27.5 saves P/G) and has a 1.25 GAA. If it’s Binnington, I am off him. If you are MME or maxing out a contest, then you should have some shares of Binnington but he is not the top option especially coming off an injury.
Tristan Jarry ( @ New Jersey)
Jarry is having a Vezina caliber season right now and is carrying this team on his back essentially. Keep in mind this is another situation similar to the Blues where if DeSmith starts then I am off the Penguins goalie. Jarry has one regulation loss in his 11 starts (9 wins and one shootout loss) and has allowed just 14 goals in those 11 games. New Jersey has lost five straight and nine of their last ten. In those 10 games, New Jersey has scored two goals or less seven times. Jarry is the higher priced of these two goalies so it’ll come down to what fits your build in the end, but I think both could be top of the heap tonight when the slate is done.
Other Options: Connor Hellebuyck (vs StL), Jon Gillies (vs Pit – GPP ONLY), Capitals starter (vs LA)
NHL DFS: Slate Overview
Teams to build around:
Washington Capitals:
Sorry IDrago15, but your Kings should get handed a beating by the Capitals tonight. I expect a sluggish Kings team tonight with being their fourth East Coast road game in six nights. They were beaten by the Hurricanes 5-1 on Saturday and I see Washington doing something similar on Sunday.
Obviously, any Capitals stack has to start with Alex Ovechkin. No matter who Ovi has on his line he is always putting up both real and fantasy points per game. Ovechkin is currently on a seven-game point streak and has 14 points in his last 10 games. In those ten games, Ovechkin is averaging 5.3 shots on goal per game and has hit the bonus on DK five times in this span.
After Ovechkin, you can pair him up with so many different players to make a full three-man stack or a mini-stack. My top partner in a stack for Ovechkin on this slate is Connor Sheary. Both Ovi and Sheary play on the top power-play units and Sheary himself is riding a four-game point streak. Los Angeles has one of the worst penalty kills in the NHL (27th ranked PK%) so a power-play stack for the Caps tonight seems like a good place to start.
Outside of Sheary, both Lars Eller and TJ Oshie make for great plays tonight skating on the top unit with Ovechkin. Eller has three goals and two assists in his last five games and Oshie has four assists in six games since his return from injury. John Carlson is both the best and most expensive option on defense for the Caps. If you are looking for value defensemen, and who isn’t, both Nick Jensen and Martin Fehervary are good options.
Secondary stack options:
One of the top stacks and most expensive stacks on this slate is Vegas 1. Both Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone have been on fire since their returns from injury. Patches has five goals, two assists, and 22 SOG in his last five and Stone has one goal and five assists in that same span. We cannot forget about Chandler Stephenson who himself has seven assists during this same five-game hot streak. Vegas 2 is also a solid value-stack if you cannot get the top line into your build. On defense, Alex Pietrangelo is like Carlson where he is both the best and most expensive option. Zach Whitecloud and Brayden McNabb are great value options from VGK.
St. Louis 2 is my next best stack after Vegas on this slate. They are also much cheaper than the Vegas stack while putting out similar production. Both Pavel Buchnevich (1 G 6 A) and Vladimir Tarasenko (3 G 4 A) have seven points in their last five games while Ivan Barbashev has three goals and three assists. Staying with the forwards, a two-man stack of Ryan O’Reilly and Logan Brown is a nice cheaper stack as well. Outside of paying up for Torey Krug or Colton Parayko there is not much to like for the Blues on defense. Niko Mikkola is a min-priced (DK) option who makes for a great punt tonight.
Other Options: Pittsburgh 1, Los Angeles 2
Value stacks
- New Jersey 2 (Tatar-Mercer-Johnsson)
- Wasington 2 ( Sheary-McMichael-Sprong)
- Pittsburgh 3 (McGinn-Blueger-Aston-Reese)
- NY Islanders 2 (Lee-Pageau-Wahlstrom)
- Pittsburgh 2 (Heinen-Carter-Zucker)
