Welcome to Wednesday’s edition of Between the Benches. After a few days of some really nice-sized slates, tonight we’re stuck with just a 3-game slate of NHL DFS. To make matters worse, only 2 of the 6 teams playing tonight have any hope of making the playoffs. That said, we should see some decent hockey tonight and the sloppiness of the bad teams may make for a high-scoring affair.
Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.
NHL DFS Goaltending
Petr Mrazek vs. Detroit Red Wings – I’ve been riding good ole Petr Mrazek quite a bit over the last couple of weeks. Although it hasn’t always worked out, he’s been extremely cheap and has rarely thrown out a complete dud. Since the start of February, he’s been in single-digit DK points just 4 times in 9 starts. So more than 50% of the time, we’ve been able to get into the double-digit DK point area. Considering he’s only $7k, I’m willing to take that risk. Especially considering the Red Wings are scoring just 2 goals per game over the last couple of weeks.
Thatcher Demko vs. Anaheim Ducks – Since coming back from a groin injury that sidelined him for nearly 3 months, Thatcher Demko has been splendid. He’s started 3 games and in all 3 games, he’s been over 15 DK points. At his price point tonight, if he can get us another 15 points I’ll be extremely happy. It will help that he’ll be facing a Ducks team scoring less than 3 goals per game over the last couple of weeks. Look for Demko to continue his hot stretch.
NHL DFS Stacks
Vancouver 1 (Pettersson, Beauvillier, Kuzmenko) + Hughes vs. Anaheim
This unit will be one of the chalkier lines on this 3-game slate. They get the lucky draw of playing against arguably the worst defensive team in the league. Over the last 2 weeks, the Ducks are giving up close to 16 high-danger chances per game and close to 38 shots on goal per game. They are a fantasy haven for opposing offenses.
We’ll attack the Ducks tonight with the top line for Vancouver. This line has been playing pretty well. Over their last 5 games, they’ve combined for 6 goals and 13 points. Nothing earth-shattering, but on a slate like this, it’s pretty good. A full-line stack here is very much in play. I’m not normally one that plays 4 people from the same team, but Quinn Hughes has been good and is under $6k. Over his last 5 games, Hughes has 6 points and is averaging 4 shots + blocks per game.
Minnesota 1 (Hartman, Kaprizon, Zuccarello) + Spurgeon vs. Winnipeg
I really wish Minnesota was playing better offensively because they get a nice matchup tonight vs. a Jets team that has been playing some horrendous hockey. The Jets are 1-4-2 in their last 7 games and have given up more than 4 goals per game over that stretch. Their goaltending has been questionable as they have just an 85% save percentage over that stretch. They are a very attachable team right now, and we’ll do so unfortunately with a team not scoring much.
My priority with this stack is going to be Kirill Kaprizov. Over his last 5 games, Kaprizov has 5 goals and that by far leads the team. Who do we pair him with? I’m hesitant to go full stack here because the Wild offense has been anemic. I’m going to side with Hartman here as he’s been getting the same shot volume as Zuccarello but he’ll also block the occasional shot. And that just adds to the DK point total.

Summary
We have a small 3-game slate tonight with mostly bad teams. It has the makings of a really weird night. I’m going to rocking mostly Canucks and Wild tonight and will fill in from there.
