NHL DFS Blue Line Power Plays (Feb. 2)

DFS NHL Blue Line Power Plays February 2nd 2021 Slate Summary

First of all, let’s talk postponements, because what would would we talk about at the start of a DFS NHL slate during the ‘COVID year’? You can cross off the Sabres, Penguins, Devils, and Islanders from your lineup options. Each of those games were cancelled due to COVID protocol.

That knocks our game total down to only eight, on an otherwise large Tuesday night slate. Still, that’s 16 teams to pick through, lowering most ownership rates, but not as low as we’d typically see on a Tuesday night.

So, ownership/chalk is a factor, especially for GPP in this DFS NHL slate on Groundhogs Day!

The chalky plays appear to be the Oilers, Avalanche, and Blues but each of those teams have players I wouldn’t necessarily avoid just because of ownership. Also, the Jets had a dynamic night, last night, and could be on the radar of all DFS NHL players.

Top DFS NHL Goalies

Having to write once every week, and specifically every Tuesday, I’m noticing a trend in the NHL Schedule. Once again, I love Philipp Grubauer (FD $8.5K / $8.1K DK) for this slate as a top goalie.

Grubauer is having a tremendous season, so far, this year and should be back between the pipes facing a young Minnesota Wild team on home ice, in Colorado.

While the Wild have some young, amazing, and dynamic talent on the ice, and should get a healthy helping of shots on net, the veteran net-minder should be about to stop enough shots for a solid win, and 20 to 30 DFS NHL points with this play.

That said, I do think Philipp is going to be a chalky goalie in this slate, and there are plenty of other options in goal Tuesday night. Even better, some of the other top options are better value picks.

Jonathan Quick (FD $6.9K / $7.7K DK) has been in the NHL for quite a long time, but he’s still a solid net-minder for a struggling Kings hockey team. Fortunately, he’s likely starting in goal while the Kings host a struggling Ducks team in Los Angeles.

Quick isn’t as sexy in DraftKings, but his FanDuel value is one of the best options in the position. Still, in DraftKings Quick could be a great GPP option, as a low-owned mid-salary play.

Like Quick, Thatcher Demko (FD $7.7K / $7.1K DK) is likely a goalie going to be overlooked on Tuesday night, but for a different reason. The Canucks are in Montreal, facing a red-hot Canadiens team right now.

But, while Demko gave up seven goals to the Canadiens this season, Thatcher has only given up three goals in his last three starts, including to a solid Jets offense in Winnipeg.

Demko is certainly a risky play, but he’s a sneaky mid-range value pick for FanDuel GPP and a potential great value play for DraftKings GPP.

Finally, Kevin Lankinen ($7.2K FD & DK) is quietly having a great rookie season in goal for a struggling Blackhawks team with some decent young talent.

Again, I don’t like the match-up. The Hurricanes are a solid overall hockey team, but they struggle to score in high volumes sometimes. Lankinen could help a lot of GPP lineups over the top, potentially win tournaments, if his strong play continues on Tuesday.

After giving up five goals in an OT loss to the Panthers, in Florida, in his first career NHL start, Kevin has only given up one or two goals in his last five starts, to the Red Wings (2), Predators (1), and Blue Jackets (2).

Top DFS NHL Centers, Wingers, and Defenders

The Oilers, Avalanche, and Blues are my favorite offenses for this slate, but we’re going to have to find several one-off plays, and potentially even fade that chalk for some GPP lineups.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are expensive in both FanDuel and DraftKings, but they’re each fantastic plays for cash games, and have a wonderful match-up on home ice against the Senators.

To afford one or both in DraftKings, you’ll want to pair them with value plays like Paval Zacha or Adam Lowry. For FanDuel, Nick Schmaltz or Vincent Trocheck complement them perfectly.

Trocheck ($4.8K) specifically is a ridiculous value play for FanDuel, especially if you are fading Lankinen and expect the Hawks defensive woes to continue.

For mid-tier plays at center, Anze Kopitar, Brayden Schenn, and Trocheck are a great start for DraftKings (all formats) and Joe Pavelski and Elias Lindholm are better mid-tier Center plays for FanDuel.

For DraftKings wingers, I’d consider continuing with an Oilers stack and snagging Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as long as you can find enough value. But for FanDuel, Mikko Rantanen and Andrei Svechnikov are better top picks.

Rantanen works well for DraftKings as well.

Meanwhile, Brady Tkachuk continues to be a fantastic one-off value mid-tier FanDuel winger play with his consistent double-digit scoring. Tkachuk is a bit more expensive on DraftKings, but worth a consideration.

For both DraftKings and FanDuel, Nikolaj Ehlers and Alex Iafallo are great mid-tier plays at winger. Ehlers and the WPG1 lines are on fire right now, a Jets stack could be a common take tonight, but they’re likely still somewhat low-owned.

Iafallo is one of the better plays from the Kings, and pairs well with Kopitar for a solid two-man Kings stack.

As we mentioned earlier, the Kings are in a good position for a win tonight, but aside from Iafallo and Kopitar, their scoring is more sporadic across the lines.

Tyler Toffoli is one more solid mid-tier winger play for DraftKings.

Finally, for value plays at the winger position, consider Brandon Saad and Jordan Kyrou for DraftKings and Alex Copp for FanDuel.

For defense, Cale Makar is a top play in both FanDuel and DraftKings and is another nice piece in a potential Avalanche stack.

John Klingberg is another great play for both, but I’d consider Klingberg too expensive for FanDuel.

Darnell Nurse has two goals and six assists in his first eleven games this season. But he’s also getting two to four shots off per game, and adding a block or two for a consistent double-digit point feed into our DFS NHL lineups.

I’ve continued to use Nurse as a great value play for FanDuel, but at $5.2K his salary is climbing into the mid-tier category, limiting his value but still worth the play.

Like Klingberg for FanDuel, I still like Nurse as a D-man play for DraftKings, but his salary is a bit too expensive.

The funky pricing between DraftKings and FanDuel continues with Quinn Hughes as a great value for DraftKings, but he’s too expensive for FanDuel.

Samuel Girard is having a Nurse-like season as well, and while he’s priced perfectly on FanDuel, he’s dirt-cheap in DraftKings…a must play!

Finally, Rasmus Andersson and Tyson Barrie are sneaky value plays at the D-man position for FanDuel, and Mike Reilly is too cheap to avoid on DraftKings.

Blue Line Power Plays Summary for February 2nd 2021

There are plenty of value plays at the defense position for both FanDuel and DraftKings, but most of the best plays don’t lineup. Keep in mind which is best value in each tool and use two value plays to bolster the rest of your lineup.

I love Grubauer as a top goalie play in all formats and for DraftKings and FanDuel. However, that is your safe play for the night. Quick and Demko are some interesting contrarian plays, or at least risker fade-the-chalk options.

The WPG1 and WPG2 lines are great stacking options tonight, as are the Oilers, Avalanche, and Blues top lines (Regular and PP1). But we have a plethora of great one-off or two-man stacking options to sprinkle in between your main stacks, like Trocheck, Kopitar, Tkachuck, Schmaltz, and Saad.
